Democrats spar over guns, healthcare, Obama

Totally embracing President Barack Obama, the former secretary of state attacked the self-styled Democratic socialist Sanders on guns and healthcare ARUN KUMAR, WASHINGTON

I

t wasn’t anything like the fiery Republican debate, but Democratic presidential frontrunner Hillary Clinton went into the attack against rival Bernie Sanders, who is fast catching up with her in the polls. Totally embracing President Barack Obama, the former secretary of state attacked the self-styled Democratic socialist Sanders on guns and healthcare as accused him of hostility towards her 2008 rival turned boss. Meeting in Charleston, South Carolina for the NBC NewsYouTube Democratic presidential candidates’ debate on January 17, Clinton, Sanders and former Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley displayed their sharp differences on issues ranging from health care to

Walmart to lay off 16,000 employees WASHINGTON: The US retail giant Walmart Stores, Inc. on January 15 announced plans to close 269 stores and lay off 16,000 employees, 6,000 of them outside the US. In a news release, the Bentonville, Arkansas-based company said it would close 154 stores in the US and 115 others abroad, including dozens in Brazil that had recently stopped operating. The 60 stores shuttered in Brazil, a market in which the world’s largest retailer has made a big push in recent years, were losing money and represented only 5 percent of Walmart’s sales in that country, the release said. The company said it had already been able to “relocate” most of the employees affected by the store closings to other points of sale. The other 55 stores to be closed outside the United States are mostly “small, loss-making stores in other Latin American markets,” the release said. The remaining closures will begin at the end of January and in the United States will mostly affect Walmart’s smallest format stores, Walmart Express, which had been launched as a pilot program in 2011.

guns to Obama’s record. Meeting two weeks before the first nominating contests in Iowa on February 1, Clinton slammed Sanders for voting “with the gun lobby numerous times,” and

accused the Vermont senator of siding with gun manufacturers and gun rights backers in Congress. But Sanders hit back hard, arguing that he had a D-minus voting rating from the National Rifle Asso-

ciation and rejected her list of charges. The Democratic clash took place just a block from the Charleston, South Carolina, church where a selfproclaimed white supremacist went

on a shooting rampage last year that left nine African-Americans dead. Defending Obama’s signature healthcare law, Clinton said that Sanders’ proposed Medicare-for-all plan -- released just an hour before the debate -- would upend the health care law and incite a new struggle over health care with Republicans. Sanders angrily rejected Clinton’s claims that his plans would result in the gutting of Obamacare. “No one is tearing this up. We are going to go forward,” Sanders said, his voice rising in anger. “That is nonsense.” A new NBC/Wall Street Journal national poll on Sunday showed Clinton leading Sanders 59 percent to 34 percent, with O’Malley, at 2 percent. But recent polls show him running neck and neck in Iowa and 14 points ahead in New Hampshire.

US, EU lift sanctions under historic Iran nuclear deal ARUN KUMAR, WASHINGTON

T

he US and European Union lifted international economic sanctions against Iran implementing a historic deal with Tehran after the UN nuclear watchdog agency confirmed it has begun dismantling its nuclear programme as promised. The implementation of the deal would also release about $100 billion of Iran’s assets and make it easier for India and other countries to

do business with Tehran. India, which had substantially reduced its oil imports from Iran under US pressure, can now freely import oil from Tehran, but would now have to pay for it in dollars. Due to the sanctions, India has been paying Iran in Indian rupees, with the money kept in an Indian account. India has to now release an estimated $6 billion in pending oil payments to Iran. President Barack Obama signed an executive order lifting some of

the US economic sanctions on Iran, the White House announced. Secretary of State John Kerry issued a statement confirming the

International Atomic Energy Agency has verified that Iran “has fully implemented its required commitments”.

Obama draws inspiration from Lord Hanuman IANS, WASHINGTON

A

statue of the Lord Hanuman is one of the selective items of personal significance that US President Barack Obama carries in his pocket. Obama disclosed this in a YouTube interview on January 15, which the White House scheduled as a way to reach to younger audiences as it promotes the president’s final State of the Union address held on January 12. During an interview with YouTube creator Nilsen, Obama

was asked to showcase an item of personal significance. He pulled from his pockets a series of small items, each of which he said reminded him “of all the different people I’ve met along the

way”. The president said that he seeks inspiration from all these whenever he feels tired or discouraged in his life. The items included rosary beads given to him from Pope Francis, whom he met at the White House in this fall season; a tiny Buddha statue procured upon him by a monk; a silver poker chip that was once the lucky charm of a bald, mustachioed biker in Iowa; a figurine of Hindu god Hanuman; and a Coptic cross from Ethiopia, where he visited in July, CNN reported.

“I carry these around all the time. I’m not that superstitious, so it’s not like I think I necessarily have to have them on me at all times,” he said. But, he added that they do provide him some reminders of the long path of his presidency. “If I feel tired, or I feel discouraged sometimes, I can kind of reach into my pocket and say yeah, that’s something I can overcome, because somebody gave me the privilege to work on these issues that are going to effect them,” he was quoted as saying.

Modi kicks off election campaign Assam did not develop much despite a PM getting elected from there for 10 years, says prime minister, slams Congress IANS, KOKRAJHAR/GUWAHATI

L

aunching a scathing attack on the Congress government in Assam, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has kicked off the BJP’s campaign for the assembly polls, saying the state did not develop much despite a prime minister getting elected from it for 10 years. Modi said Assam has not developed much despite the 10 years of Congress-led United Progressive Alliance rule and that the Congress has been in power in the state for about last 15 years. The state assembly elections are due in April this year. The prime minister first addressed a public rally organised by the Bodoland Peoples’ Front (BPF) and then a Yuva Shakti Sanmilan at Khanapara area in Guwahati. He also addressed a large gathering of students from different education institutions of the northeast at the IIT Guwahati campus before leaving for New Delhi. In Kokrajhar, Modi announced the Karbis of the plains will be granted the Scheduled Tribes (ST) status while the the Bodo Kachari community of the hill areas like Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao district will also be granted the ST status soon. The prime minister, however, cautiously avoided talking

Woman throws ink at Kejriwal, held NEW DELHI: The woman who threw ink at Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal at a public gathering here this week has been remanded in 14 days judicial custody by a court here. Metropolitan Magistrate Sunil Kumar sent Bhawna Arora, a woman from the Aam Aadmi Party’s breakaway group in Punjab, to 14 days’ judicial custody after Delhi Police informed him that she is not required for further custodial interrogation. Arora was arrested after she threw ink at Kejriwal, alleging a “CNG scam” in the AAP government. She, however, missed him. The incident took place at an event held in the capital to mark the “success” of the odd-even traffic restriction scheme.

IS letter threatens Modi, Parrikar PANAJI: Goa Police have begun investigating a letter, with IS scribbled on it, which has threatened Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar for allegedly pursuing anti-beef policies. Goa’s Inspector General of Police V. Renganathan confirmed the contents of the letter, which he said was written in English, and added the postcard containing the threats to the two political leaders was posted locally.

about the issue of statehood to Bodoland and the Bodoland Peoples’ Front’s demand for a Rs.1,000 crore package for development of the Bodo region.

“Since you are not allowing to eat beef, you will be taken care of,” the postcard said while referring to Modi and Parrikar. The letter was signed with the letters IS. The letter, received at the state secretariat here, was later handed over to the Anti-Terror Squad and the North Goa district police. Police sources said Parrikar’s security was reviewed in view of the threat letter.

(BTAD), several other Bodo organizations have demanded that the prime minister make the Centre’s stand clear on the issue of statehood to the Bodo lands.

“So what has the prime minister, who was elected from the state for 10 years, done? They (the Congress) have not been able to do anything in last 15 years and they want me to do everything in 15 months time. You tell me if it is justified?” said Modi. While the BPF has been demanding a special package of Rs.1,000 crore for the four districts of Bodoland Territorial Areas Districts

year and more academic and administrative autonomy would be granted to the institute. He assured the people that the defunct Rupsi airport will be made operational for the Indian Air Force and common people as soon as the land clearance is received from the state government. He said the Central government is also working on extending the Kanchanjunga Express to Assam’s Barak Valley to boost connectivity of the region. Modi targeted the erstwhile Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government at the Centre and the ruling Congress government in Assam. “I was under the impression there is no problem in Assam. Assam is the state from where the prime minister was elected for 10 years. The Congress has ruled the

state for the last 15 years. But I am shocked to see the problems and issues here,” he said. “So what has the prime minister, who was elected from the state for 10 years, done? They (the Congress) have not been able to do anything in last 15 years and they (the Congress) want me to do everything in 15 months time. You tell me if it is justified?” said Modi. Taking a dig at recent Congress campaigns against him, Modi said: “Delhi has started asking for accounts of each penny given to the states. I was told when the Centre releases Re.1 only 15 paise of it reaches the villages. So, where does the money go? The Centre has started asking for the accounts. Thus, many do not like me these days,” he said.

India puts fifth navigation satellite in earth’s orbit SRIHARIKOTA (ANDHRA PRADESH), IANS

ndia on January 20 placed its fifth navigation satellite in the earth’s lower orbit after a textbook-launch from the rocket port here. With this launch, India moves closer to joining a select group of nations having their own satellitebased navigation systems to provide accurate position information services to users across the country and the region, extending approximately 1,500 km around India. “We have begun the new year with a successful launch and a precise injection of the fifth navigational satellite in the intended orbit,” Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) chairman A.S. Kiran Kumar said from the mission control centre 20 minutes after the PSLV rocket carrying the satellite blasted off at 9:31 a.m. The 44-metre-high polar satel-

lite launch vehicle (PSLV-C31), weighing 320 tonnes and carrying the 1,425-kg Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS1E), soared into a cloudy sky, leaving behind a column of dense

orange flame and a huge cloud of fumes at the second launch pad of the Satish Dhawan space centre on the sea coast here, about 80 km north-east of Chennai. “The spacecraft’s solar panels

were deployed soon after its separation from the rocket and injection in the intended orbit. The satellite’s health is normal,” the Indian space agency’s satellite director M. Annadurai said. President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the ISRO scientists on the successful launch. “Heartiest congratulations to the ISRO team on the successful launch of navigation satellite IRNSS-1E,” the president said in his message. “Congratulating the dynamism and determination of ISRO and our scientists on the successful launch of PSLV-C31 and putting IRNSS-1E in orbit precisely,” Modi tweeted. The Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS) comprises a constellation of seven satellites of which IRNSS-1A, IRNSS-1B, IRNSS-1C, IRNSS-1D and IRNSS-1E have been put into orbit so far.

A NEW ENERGY IN FRANCE-INDIA TIES

French President Francois Hollande visits India as guest of honor at the Republic Day parade; the new focus areas in India can be the big breakthrough in this relationship Paris. Besides, Indian and French leaders have taken time out for bilateral discussions at practically all multilateral events like the UN General Assembly meeting in New York in September and the G20 meet in Antalya, Turkey, in November. Anyone looking for signs of this new sense of purpose and direction in the relationship needs to only look at fresh movement in the long-pending deal over the purchase of the French Rafale multi-role medium range combat aircraft. After having been stuck for nearly seven years, when in January 2012, India finally opted for Rafale as the aircraft that would become the new backbone of the Indian Air Force, with 128 fulfilling the role, the French government and Rafale-manufacturer Dassault were hoping it would be only a matter of a few months more to close the deal and begin the supply of the aircraft. On his first visit to France, at a joint press conference with Hollande in Palais Elysee, Modi sprung a surprise and announced that India would buy 36 Rafales in fly-away condition, saying that the terms of this deal would be finalised shortly. Besides, Make in India, France is an equally good and logical partner for India in the implementation of several other projects that the country has been focussing on. One of the most important areas for enhanced bilateral cooperation in the urbanisation of India. In the smart city project, the French have already evinced interest in undertaking the work in three cities. The new focus areas of India could be the big breakthrough in this relationship which could help take the bilateral trade to the next level and give the bandwidth which has been missing from this crucial relationship for a long while.

RANVIR S. NAYAR, IANS

F

rench President Francois Hollande visits India as guest of honor at the Republic Day parade on January 26. Is the visit a sign of the coming of age of Indo-French relations? It's been almost two years to the date from Hollande's first visit to India as president. In the interregnum, a lot has changed around the world and in bilateral relations. The world is confronted with its biggest geostrategic challenge in the shape of the Islamic State (IS), which has emerged as a major threat to peace and security around the world and whose agents have already carried out numerous attacks in France, the US and many other countries. The IS attacks in the Middle East have also led to the biggest refugee crisis since the Second World War and over a million refugees have landed in the European Union. Hundreds more have perished in their attempt to cross the Mediterranean Sea, seeking the safety of Europe. The situation of the world economy is hardly any better, as over the last year or so it has been rattled by the Chinese tsunami and a European economy that seems stuck in low, jobless growth, with very few bright spots, including India, which seem to be keeping the global economy afloat. With its expected GDP growth of about seven percent this year, India has kept its place as the fastest growing large economy in the world for the second year running. Businesses from around the world, including France, are now looking at India with renewed expectations. Ever since India elected Narendra Modi as prime minister in May 2014, there seems to be a new spring in the step of Indian relations with France. Modi was in France twice in 2015, once on a bilateral visit in April and then again in November for the Climate Change Summit in

Sikkim shows the way with organic farming P.D. RAI, IANS

P

rime Minister Narendra Modi has lauded Sikkim’s effort to become an organic state. Any which way you look at it, Sikkim has assumed leadership in organic agriculture. The rest of the country will have to follow suit. Years of toil and leadership has made this happen. The people of Sikkim, the farmers, agriculturists, bureaucrats and politicians have all played their part in this great Sikkimese narrative. One must commend Prime Minister Narendra Modi for tak-

ing a look at the great potential of this venture. He has found it to be a significant public policy move that can transform the agriculture policy within the rest of India. Little wonder then that he addressed a meeting of all agriculture ministers of the Indian states to push home the point of going organic. Everyone is aware that the Himalayas serves the IndoGangetic plains as well as the Assam ecosystem by just sending down water through its myriad rivers. It also extends much needed replenishment of fertile top soil carved out from the mountains.

Climate change may actually disrupt this entire process. The rivers are going to be seasonal as more and more warming will lead to drying up of the important glaciers and permafrost. Loss of biodiversity all across the Himalaya will prove very costly for the nation. The entire Himalayan ecosystem is under threat from climate change and global warming. We have signs of that even as our farmers are reporting that oranges are better off in higher altitudes than before. And so many such like empirical evidences that are

discussed in different settings. In order to combat and delay the problems of ecosystem services from the Himalayas, the remedy will be to start with organic farming. Let the entire Himalayan belt get into farming the way it was done traditionally

but with much more scientific inputs and understanding. This will change the way we all think of farming and getting our food. Food security will once more move into the hands of farmers rather than remain in the clutches of politicians and bureaucrats.

Policeman acquitted in Indian grandfather assault case US Judge Madeline Hughes Haikala threw out the case saying the government has had two fair chances to obtain a conviction; it will not have another ARUN KUMAR, WASHINGTON

T

o the shock of the Indian American community, a US judge has acquitted an Alabama police officer who slammed a visiting Indian grandfather to the ground while taking a walk outside his son’s home. Federal Judge Madeline Hughes Haikala threw out the case against Madison Police officer Eric Parker, who faced up to 10 years in prison for using excessive force against 57year-old Sureshbhai Patel down in February last year, Al.com reported. Turning down the prosecutors’ plea for a third trial after two mistrials, Haikala late on January 13 filed a 92-page opinion, saying: “The government has had two full and fair chances to obtain a conviction; it will not have another.” “The result in this case is by no means satisfying. Hindsight brings clarity to a calamity,” she wrote in the conclusion of her opinion. “Mr. Patel’s celebrated arrival in this country to begin a new life with his son was interrupted in two trag-

priate to grieve his injury.” “However, that injury, standing alone, does not provide the basis for a criminal judgment against Mr. Parker under 18 U.S.C. 242.” A team of three federal prosecutors had twice tried Parker last year for the take-down of Patel on the morning of February 6, 2015. Both trials ended with a deadlocked jury.

On January 13 this year, federal prosecutors had filed a motion against acquittal, arguing that a reasonable jury could view the video and listen to testimony and decide Parker intentionally used excessive force in slamming Patel into the ground. Parker twice testified that he lost his balance and fell. He also testified that Patel repeatedly jerked his hand away from Parker. Patel, who had just arrived from India to help care for his grandson, testified he does not speak English and did not resist. On the morning of February 6, a neighbor called police to complain of a “skinny black guy” who is “just kind of walking around close to the garage”. Police found Patel walking along the sidewalk. But Patel could not answer questions and the confused encounter ended with Patel in an ambulance. Cheng Tao, the neurosurgeon who operated on Patel at Huntsville Hospital, twice testified that the takedown left Patel unable to walk or grip his hands.

V.K. Singh in charge of Gulf-based Indians NEW DELHI: Minister of State for External Affairs V.K. Singh will now on look after all issues related to expatriate Indians in the Gulf. “All matters relating to Indian nationals in Gulf countries will now be looked after by my col-

league Gen V.K. Singh,” External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj tweeted late on January 14. There are nearly five million expatriate Indians in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries: Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. A majority work as blue collar workers, and there are frequent labor-related issues. Sushma Swaraj’s statement comes after the ministry of overseas Indian affairs was merged with the external affairs ministry this month.

Indra Nooyi becomes Yale’s Nikki Haley caught in Trump’s crosshairs biggest alumni donor ARUN KUMAR, WASHINGTON

WASHINGTON: Indra Nooyi, the Indian-born PepsiCo Chairperson and CEO, has become the Yale School of Management’s biggest alumni donor with a ‘landmark gift’ to endow the deanship at her alma mater. Chennai-born Nooyi, 60, who graduated from the school in 1980, has made the gift to also inaugurate the Fifth Decade Innovation Fund, the school announced. The fund is an ambitious initiative designed to advance the school’s aim of developing leaders with the broad global mindset and multi-disciplinary approach to business that is needed to succeed in 21st-century capitalism, the school said With this gift, Nooyi becomes the most generous graduate of Yale School of Management in terms of lifetime giving to the school. She is the first woman to endow the deanship at a top business school. “My experience at the Yale School of Management forever altered the course of my life,” said Nooyi, who has served as chief executive officer of PepsiCo since 2006, and chairperson since 2007. “My gift to this wonderful institu-

ikki Haley’s call to Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump to tamp down on his anti-immigrant rhetoric won praise from Republicans and Democrats alike, but the real estate mogul was not amused. Supporters of Trump were angered that Haley called him out and many took to Twitter and mocked her Indian heritage, making fun of her Indian given name. “Some people think that you have to be the loudest voice in the room to make a difference,” South Carolina’s Indian-American governor said in the Republican Party’s response to President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address on January 12 night. “That is just not true. Often, the best thing we can do is turn down the volume,” she said without naming Trump, who has rattled the Republican establishment with his rhetoric particularly his call to temporarily bar all Muslims from entering the US. Haley acknowledged on January 13 morning that she was referring to Trump when she warned Americans not to follow the angriest voices in politics. “Mr. Trump has definitely contributed to what I think is just irre-

sponsible talk,” the daughter of Sikh immigrants from India told NBC. The remarks drew praise from many Republicans and Democrats and even the White House for “willing

White House chief of staff Denis McDonough also expressed approval for Haley to do something that a lot of other leading Republicans have been unwilling to do, which is to actually articulate a commitment to some core American values.” “Look, that

doesn’t mean that we agree with Governor Haley on everything; we surely don’t,” Obama’s press secretary Josh Earnest told reporters. “But her willingness to stand up for some important principles was noted, and it took courage. And for that, she deserves credit,” he said. White House chief of staff Denis McDonough also expressed approval for Haley. “I have a lot of admiration for the governor,” McDonough said Wednesday describing parts of her speech as “admirable.” Haley’s speech also renewed speculation that she would be a strong pick as a vice-presidential candidate.

China’s

growth rate hits 25-year low The country faces a daunting task in deepening reforms and needs to step up supply-side structural reforms IANS, BEIJING

C

hina’s economy grew 6.9 percent year on year in 2015, the slowest annual expansion in a quarter of a century, but it is still in line with the official target, according to data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on January 19. Growth in the fourth quarter came at 6.8 percent year on year, the lowest quarterly rate since the global financial crisis, Chinese news agency Xinhua cited the data as saying.

21 killed in Pakistan varsity terror attack PESHAWAR: At least 21 people, including four gunmen, were killed when terrorists stormed the Bacha Khan University in Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on January 20, Dawn reported. The gunmen opened fire at students and faculty members who had gathered in a school on the varsity campus for a poetry recital to commemorate the anniversary of the activist and leader after whom the school is named. Lt General Asim Bajwa, the Pakistan army spokesperson, said on Twitter that four attackers had been killed and that government troops had resumed control of all buildings and rooftops. There were conflicting reports from the site initially with CNN news placing the toll at seven. "It's not yet clear how many of the dead are attackers and how many are civilians," a CNN report said. Meanwhile, Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif condemned the attack in the "strongest terms". "...Sharif is deeply grieved over the sad incident of terrorists' attack on Bacha Khan University... which has reportedly resulted in the loss of precious human lives and injured many others," a statement from his office said. The prime minister said “those killing innocent students and citizens have no faith and religion."

China targeted an annual economic growth of around seven percent for 2015. The country’s gross domestic product (GDP) reached 67.67 trillion yuan (about $10.3 trillion) in 2015, with the service sector accounting for 50.5 percent, the first time the ratio exceeded 50 percent, according to the NBS. China’s economy still “ran within a reasonable range” in 2015, with its structure further optimized, upgrading accelerated, new growth drivers strengthened and people’s lives

improved, NBS chief Wang Baoan said. However, the country faces a daunting task in deepening reforms on all fronts and needs to step up supply-side structural reforms. Major economic indicators softened in 2015, with industrial output growth slowing to 6.1 percent year on year from 8.3 percent in 2014, NBS figures showed. Urban fixed-asset investment continued to cool, expanding 10

percent year on year, compared with 15.7 percent in 2014. Retail sales rose 10.7 percent, down from 12 percent registered in 2014. Foreign trade ended 2015 with its first annual contraction in six years. Sagging global trade, rising financial risks and changing domestic market conditions were among the factors affecting the economy, Wang said. He also pointed to an ailing prop-

urkey has hit Islamic State (IS) targets across its southeastern border and killed 200 IS militants with 48 hours after the Istanbul bombing on January 12, Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said on January 14. The Turkish military operations targeted IS positions in Syria and Iraq, Davutoglu told a conference of the Turkish ambassadors in Ankara. The move came after Turkish government identified the suicide bomber of Istanbul attack as an IS member, he added. Ten German tourists were killed and 17 others injured in the Sultanahmet Square attack on January 12.

Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmus said the bomber, who was of Syrian origin, recently entered Turkey from Syria. Turkey has suffered from a series of deadly attacks. In July 2015, a

bombing attack in the border town of Suruc in southeastern Turkey killed 34 pro-Kurdish and left-wing activists. Last October, twin suicide bombings hit the capital city Ankara, claiming a total of 103 lives.

erty sector and stock market fluctuations but said their impact on the economy was either limited or yet to be evaluated. Wang dismissed worries about China’s government debts, noting that they accounted for less than 40 percent of the country’s GDP. Though slowing, China still contributed more than 25 percent of the global economic growth, he said.

Fund crunch forces IS cut fighters’ wages RAQQA: Islamic State has cut its fighters’ salaries by 50 percent in Syria as air strikes continue to affect its revenue streams, The Independent reported. “On account of the exceptional circumstances the IS is facing, it has been decided to reduce the salaries that are paid to all mujahideen by half, and it is not allowed for anyone to be exempted from this decision, whatever his position,” The daily said on January 18, citing a purported IS document. “Let it be known that work will continue to distribute provisions twice every month as usual,” the document said.

Belgian with ‘direct links’ to Paris attackers arrested IANS, RABAT

Belgian man with “direct links” to Paris attackers was arrested near Casablanca city of Morocco, the country’s interior ministry said. The man of Moroccan descent, arrested on January 15, was not named, with authorities only releasing his initials “GA” in Arabic. The suspect had travelled from Belgium to Syria with one of the

Saint-Denis suicide bombers to fight Al-Nusra Front before joining the Islamic State (IS), the ministry said. He had received military training on the use of different types of arms and guerrilla tactics before being sent to one of the conflict fronts, it added. During his time in Syria, the arrested man formed close ties with the IS leaders, including the mastermind of Paris attacks, who

issued threats to carry out terrorist attacks in France and Belgium, the ministry said. It also said the suspect left Syria

and returned to Belgium via Turkey and Germany, and he entered Morocco from the Netherlands.

Issue not Dalit versus non-Dalit: Smriti Irani NEW DELHI: The suicide case of Rohith Vemula, research scholar at University of Hyderabad, was not a “Dalit versus non-Dalit issue”, and there was a “malicious attempt to project it as a caste battle”, Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani said here on Wednesday. “There has been a malicious attempt to project the issue as a

Without naming them, he said a union minister in Delhi and the vice chancellor created conditions which led to the research scholar committing suicide. “Certainly he has committed suicide but the conditions for his suicide have been created by the vice chancellor, the minister and the institution,” said the Congress leader. Gandhi, who spent nearly two hours meeting four other suspended Dalit students and consoling the student’s family, also

He also met students who are on hunger strike in support of their demands including Rs.5 crore compensation and a job. Gandhi said that the idea of a university is that young people from various parts of the country come here and express whatever is there in their heart. “The idea of a university is knowledge. When somebody tries to impose on youngsters one idea and tell them only this idea is acceptable, they cause tremendous pain to their passion,” he added.

Refusing to divulge more information about the project, he said: “It’s the script that caught my attention. We are trying something new and I don’t want to spoil the fun by talking about it now. I’m sure it will dazzle audiences”. Rumored to be based on the concept of time travel, the film features Suriya in a triple role. He will be playing an elder brother and younger brother. It’s going to be a busy year for me,” Aishwarya told IANS. Having recently completed shooting for horror film “Mo”, she will soon join the sets of filmmaker Seenu Ramaswamy’s “Dharmadurai” with Vijay Sethupathi. “This is the second time I’ll be working with Vijay and director Seenu sir. I play one of the leads. It’s a role sans make-up and I’m really excited about this project. I play a girl from Theni, and I can’t wait to join the sets,” she said. Aishwarya is also excited about “Hello Naan Pei Pesuren”. She has clarified that she doesn’t play the ghost, but has a very interesting character.

‘Rajini Murugan’: Barely entertaining, mostly regressive voice, is an indication of a confident young actress. She’s a delight to watch and shines in her scenes but it’s sad that talented artistes like her don’t get to add much value.

ashing in on the Rajinikanth sentiment to the T, Sivakarthikeyan, a real life Rajinikanth fanboy, saves a very ordinary and regressive film from turning into a boring and unbearable experience. Even with its predictable storyline, Sivakarthikeyan makes the film work, and only he can save a

Carre’s Smiley’s People (1982) with Alec Guinness and then as the odious, smarmy Reverend Obadiah Slope in the channel adaptation of Anthony Trollope’s ecclesiastical series Barchester Towers (1982). What took his career upward was his villainous part as the German terrorist in the high octane-action

thriller Die Hard (1988) opposite Bruce Willis (a role he reprised in a flashback as Die Hard with a Vengeance, 1995), as the evil Sheriff of Nottingham in Kevin Costnerstarrer Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves (1991) and then as Hogwarts’ apparently malevolent potions master who ceaselessly targets the boy wizard and his friends. Playing Snape with barely repressed, sarcastic menace, Rickman appeared in all seven films of the series from Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (2001) to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II (2011). His distinctive voice was used for Marvin the Paranoid Android in a 2005 adaptation of Douglas Adams’ cult classic “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” and as the Caterpillar in Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland” (2010).

ayant Gilatkar’s “Chalk n Duster” honestly and compassionately reflects our deteriorating education system, albeit in a straight, on-the-face and old fashioned manner. Despite being mawkishly executed, it is inspirational. It is the story of the incredible teachers of Incredible India. With the premise, “keep education as education and not as business”, the plot delves into the trials and tribulations of the teachers at Kantaben High School, who are being subjected to the unwarranted harassment by their overtly insensitive management, in their bid to make their school numero uno. While the treatment is overdramatic and exaggerated, comparing tradition with modernity, the messages hit the right nerve. It especially hits you, when you hear Science teacher Jyoti (Juhi Chawla) speak directly to the audience, “Can you imagine what the world would be like without teachers?” The screenplay is taut and engaging despite the cliches. It blends the teachers’ professional lives with their domestic one, in ample measure, especially that of the senior mathematics teacher, Vidhya Sawant essayed by Shabana Azmi and that of her younger col-

FRIDAY, JANUARY 22, 2016

BY A STAFF WRITER CHAUMBURG, IL -- US Senator Dick Durbin of Illinois is backing Raja Krishnamoorthi in the Democratic primary for the 8th Congressional District of Illinois. “Raja has impressed me with his focus on fighting for working families to help build and grow a vibrant middle class in America that is the most certain way to move our economy forward,” said Durbin, the state’s senior senator and Senate Minority Whip, the second highest ranking position among Senate Democrats. “Raja is a strong progressive and the best choice to succeed Tammy Duckworth and represent the hardworking taxpayers of the northwest Chicago suburbs. The product of humble roots, Raja will make sure that the same programs that were there for his family, like quality public schools and Social Security and Medicare, will be there for future generations.” Durbin was elected to the Senate in 1996 and first served in the US House beginning with his election in 1982 to the seat once held by Abraham Lincoln. While a member of the House, Durbin won a landmark ban on smoking on commercial airline flights of less than two hours in 1988 that was eventually expanded to all domestic flights. Over his career, Durbin has spearheaded numerous other laws concerning consumer and product safety, college student loans and affordability, gun violence, national security, and fiscal reform and government oversight. “I look forward to working in Congress

with Senator Durbin to craft legislation to assist working families in Illinois and the 8th District,” Krishnamoorthi said. “I am very humbled by Senator Durbin’s support and his belief in me to represent the 8th District in Congress.” Sen. Durbin’s endorsing of Raja follows support announced by key labor unions like the Amalgamated Transit Union, the United Steelworkers and Ironworkers Local 63. Durbin’s endorsement also comes after House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi announced her backing of Raja for Congress. “Raja’s combination of public and private sector experience uniquely prepares him to work in Congress to develop and protect American jobs, defend a woman’s right to choose, and strengthen America’s gun laws,” Durbin said. The son of immigrants, Raja grew up in Illinois. After college and law school, he became issues director for Barack Obama’s successful US Senate campaign. He also served as a founding prosecutor in Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan’s anti-corruption unit.

A lifelong progressive, Raja is running for Congress to stand up for compassionate immigration reform, real action on climate change, equal pay for women, a more level playing field for the middle class and sane gun laws. He is committed to fighting attempts by the Republican Congress to cut the Social Security and Medicare benefits his parents and millions of other Americans rely on. Durbin’s endorsement continues Raja’s impressive momentum with less than two months before the March 15 election. Durbin joins more than 100 leaders and organizations endorsing Raja. In addition to Durbin and Pelosi, Krishnamoorthi has earned the support of Former Senior Advisor to President Obama David Axelrod and Rep. Jan Schakowsky, along with the Illinois State Council of Machinists, Air Line Pilots Association, International Union of Elevator Constructors Local 2, OPEIU Local 45, and Illinois Letter Carriers President Ken Christy.

Retired Asians mark New Year with gusto

The American Association of Retired Asians Welcomed 2016 with Board members and Team.

BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL– Who said it was the right of the youth alone to celebrate New Year with enthusiasm and fervor? That this was merely a myth was proved by over 250 members of the American Association of Retired Asians (AARA), who assembled at Shahi Banquet at Lombard, IL to bid goodbye to 2015 and to welcome 2016. They demonstrated indubitably that despite their advancing age, they are second to none in terms of showcasing youthful zest and gusto in welcoming the New Year. The singers from RH Entertainment, Manmeet Kaur and Rajesh Chalam, accompanied by well-equipped orchestra, did a fabulous job by rendering the hit tracks of Bollywood and made the

C

evening an occasion to remember forever. The musical evening disproved the widely-held belief that the older generation is solely interested in the classical music alone. They requested the singers, again and again, to sing quite a few ultra-modern songs, and enjoyed the pop music thoroughly. Thanks to the magic of the electrifying music, many seniors danced endlessly matching the beats of the captivating songs. At the stroke of the midnight, balloons dropped from the ceiling and everyone got up to wish each other a very happy, healthy, and prosperous New Year. Dr. Talat Khan, AARA founderpresident, said that while the South Asian immigrant community was diverse in terms of religion, region, language, etc., the association provided a unique platform to unite them all.

How dry eyes can impact your vision

BY DR THOMAS JOHN, MD HICAGO, IL – Often, you wonder can one’s eyes actually get dry? How is this possible? Well, the short answer is “Yes, your eyes can become dry.” So let us explore dry eyes. Dr y eyes are caused by aging, contact lens use (believe it or not), some medications, arthritis, and much, much more. We humans blink about 10,000 times daily. This means, with each blink, our eyelids glides over the eye’s surface. This resulting friction between the eyelids and the eye’s surface can result in potential damage to the eye. The human body has what is called a tear film that normally bathes the surface of the eye. This tear film provides the necessary lubrication for normal functioning of the human eye. For whatever reason, if this tear film

C

becomes compromised, or insufficient to lubricate the eye’s surface, then it causes dry eyes. So, when the eye becomes dry, you begin to feel foreign body sensation, sandy sensation, irritation, discomfort, pain, heavy eyes, sensation of dryness, light sensitivity or photophobia, sore eyes, fatigued eyes, and more importantly, it can blur your vision. What can be done for dry eyes? It all depends on the severity of the dry eyes. If it is mild, then just using artificial tears up to 4 times daily may suffice. Punctal plugs (tear duct plugs) will help retain the tears longer and relieve or decrease the symptoms. In severe cases, surgery may be required, including what is called a lateral tarsorrhaphy, which is partially sewing the eyelids together.

Indian couple’s infant placed in foster care BY A STAFF WRITER ERSEY CITY, NJ -- A two-monthold son of an Indian couple in New Jersey has been placed in foster care by US child welfare officials after the infant boy was admitted to the hospital with serious internal head injuries. The son of Ashish Pareek, an employee of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and resident of Jersey City, had apparently slipped from his mother’s hand and hit his head on a TV stand before falling hard on the floor, according to his family. His wife, Vidisha, delivered the baby in October and the couple hailing from Jaipur, Rajasthan, has been living in the US since August 2015. “It was an accident but the US authorities are saying that our family tried to harm the child. US authorities are saying the child has been treated in an inhuman way and so cannot be handed over to the parents. But this is untrue, it was an accident,” says Pareek’s brother. The family has appealed to the Ministry of External Affairs to help get the infant back. In a letter to Indian Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj, Pareek, a project manager with TCS, said he had travelled to the

Smt Gopi singing Lohri Folklores

BY A STAFF WRITER OSTON, TX -- The Shivalaya temple of Greater Boston was packed with traditionally-dressed Punjabi devotees on the occasion of Lohri festival which was celebrated on January 13, a day before Makar Sankranti. It is a winter solstice day, being the shortest day and the longest night of the year. Indeed, Lohri is considered to be the New Year for Punjabi farmers as it marks the day of harvest for their Rabi crops. The devotees, along with their families and friends, offered special prayers with full devotion for the prosperity and peace. After Maha Mangalarati, devotees gathered in the hall to observe traditional Bharat Natyam, Bhangra and some Bollywood dances by little kids and singing folklores by adults. The whole show was put together by very talented Selhi brothers, Chirag and Anurag. More than a dozen new-borns were introduced to devotees and were blessed for their long life. The couples and new parents were given sweet packets as token of blessing by temple president Vijay Kumar Selhi to enjoy their married lives and parenthood, respectively. Then came a long waited excellent part of Lohri festival, the worship of the bonfire. Temple priest Pandit Jay Narayan Badal performed Ganesh puja with all the devotees with utmost devotion before lighting the bonfire and chanted shlokas for Fire God Agni and the Sun God for their blessings. Devotees also offered sugarcane and radish as well to Agni Deva which are generally harvested in January to bring health and prosperity to all.

Baby Ashvid US on August 10 with his pregnant wife, adding that “On December 23, while getting ready to visit a pediatrician, my son fell down and had injuries on his head.” He further stated that the baby, Ashvid, was rushed to a hospital. He was first taken to the emergency unit of Christ Hospital in Jersey City and subsequently transferred to St. Peter’s Hospital, which involved the Department of Child Protection and Permanency (DCPP) since they suspected a case of child abuse. After treatment at two different hospitals, the baby reportedly recovered and was discharged on January 2, but was handed over by child welfare officials to foster care last week. The New Jersey DCPP had said the parents neglected to take proper care of

their child. The couple had a court hearing January 4 when it was alleged that the child suffered from ‘Shaken Baby Syndrome,’ which infers child abuse caused by violent shaking. In the letter, Pareek said he denied the abuse claims. The next hearing is reportedly scheduled for February 14. The Indian Consulate is in contact with authorities as well as the child’s parents but said legal procedures would have to be followed in the case since it has gone to court. “The Consulate of India in New York is in touch with all concerned authorities including the parents and also the local authorities in this case. However, since the case has to be taken up in the court, the procedure has to take place which should not take long,” said the Press Wing of the Consulate. It expressed the hope that the case would be resolved in a few days and said the Consulate was providing all logistic help. The couple’s relatives have also sought help from Rajasthan Home Secretary Sandeep Verma, who assured them of taking the matter up with the Union Home Ministry.

Sikh bus driver is assaulted in LA

BY A STAFF WRITER OS ANGELES, CA -- The Sikh Coalition has said that a Sikh man driving a bus in Los Angeles was assaulted and deemed a “terrorist” and “suicide bomber” by a passenger. Additionally, the passenger claimed the bus driver, Balwinder Jit Singh, hijacked the bus. Singh, an Indian American father of five, has worked as a bus driver for nearly two decades. He was wearing his turban at the time of the assault and managed to keep his foot on the brake pedal, maintaining the safety of other passengers on the bus. The driver received was left with a black eye, swelling and bruises on his face and jaw, as well as an infection in one of his eyes. Since the November 6, 2015, attack on Singh, he continues to suffer from blurred vision and pain. Initially, he did not go public with the incident but has since retained the Sikh Coalition to spread the news and help

L

Balwinder Jit Singh represent him during the investigation. Los Angeles County sheriff ’s officials have said the suspect is in custody with the Los Angeles police on a different criminal case, adding that the suspect only faces

misdemeanor charges, the Coalition said. “These charges fail to capture the violent nature of the attack, and the anti-Sikh bias that precipitated it,” it added, saying it will push to get hate crime charges filed. Gurjot Kaur, the Coalition’s senior staff attorney, said, “In the face of hateful rhetoric and the current climate of fear, we must ensure that all bias-based incidents are thoroughly investigated and the perpetrators brought to justice.” The incident is just one in a string of “bias-based attacks” against Sikhs across the country in recent months, according to the Coalition, including: a gurdwara (Sikh house of worship) in Orange County that was vandalized, a Sikh man in Fresno was hit by a truck and beaten, and a Sikh store clerk in Fresno was fatally stabbed. The Coalition said it had processed more than three times the amount of legal intakes related to hate backlash in the past month than in previous years combined.

Indian-owned 7-Eleven had sold jackpot ticket BY A STAFF WRITER HINO HILLS, CA -- An Indian American-owned 7-Eleven in Chino Hills, Calif., is among three nationwide stores that sold one of the winning tickets in the $1.6 billion Powerball jackpot--the largest lottery prize in US history. Store owner Balbir Atwal will pocket a whopping $1 million bonus for selling the winning ticket. He was presented with a $1 million ceremonial check on January 14 in front of a cheering crowd outside his Chino Hills store. In order to reach the Powerball jackpot, a ticket has to match all six numbers on the ticket. The winning numbers were 04, 08, 19, 27, 34, and Powerball-10. The odds of winning the record jackpot were 1 in 292.2 million. The other two winners are from Tennessee and Florida. The prize money will be split evenly among

C

Store owner Balbir Atwal the lucky ticket holders. Atwal, who has owned the store since 1994, runs three others in Yorba Linda, Diamond Bar and La Habra. He plans to donate part of the store’s portion to charities and share the rest with employees and family. “I feel very good, some lucky customer came here and made me famous,” says

Atwal, 57. According to new lottery rules, store owners are entitled to a half a per cent of the prize only if it is worth at least $1 million. The California store and its surrounding strip mall suddenly became a popular gathering spot in the rural suburb of 78,000, where cows still graze on hillsides. Atwal worked as an electronics salesman after immigrating from India in 1981, and bought his first 7-Eleven franchise at the age of 27. “Every time we say, oh, this is time,” Atwal said. “I was just joking, I said, this is the time someone’s going to hit it.” Some took selfies with the store clerk, who became an instant celebrity and may well have been the man who sold the ticket. “I’m very proud that the ticket was sold here,” said the clerk, M. Faroqui. “I’m very happy. This is very exciting.”

3 held as rival groups clash at Sikh temple BY A STAFF WRITER URLOCK, CA-- Three people have been arrested last week in connection with a major fight at the Sikh Temple in Turlock. Officials say two factions have been involved in a legal dispute over leadership of the temple. Turlock police Chief Robert Jackson said the case has played out in court and meetings with law enforcement over the past two years but escalated to violence on January 17 afternoon during services at the temple on Fifth Street. The Turlock police arrested Sandeep Singh, 38, on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon. Jackson said Singh swung a ceremonial sword at a group of people. Two other suspects were also arrested in their hometown of Madera. Gurdev Singh, 47, was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and elder abuse for allegedly swinging a musical instrument called a chimta at a group of men, hitting one in the head and another in the arm. A chimta is a percussion instrument shaped roughly like a stick with rings, or jingles, attached.

New fixing scandal erupts as Australian Open begins Of the 16 players under suspicion, eight will take to the court at the Australian Open over the next fortnight; The secret files uncovered evidences of match fixing IANS, MELBOURNE

n exhaustive investigation into tennis match fixing by two prominent media organizations has revealed evidence that 16 professional players have been caught up in the scandal. The findings of the investigation, by BuzzFeed News and the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), were revealed on the day 2016’s first Major, the Australian Open, began at Melbourne Park, reports Xinhua. Of the 16 players under suspicion, eight will take to the court at the Australian Open over the next fortnight. Authors of the report devised an algorithm to analyse gambling patterns on professional tennis matches over the past seven years. The investigation uncovered a bundle of leaked internal documents and analysis of betting on 26,000 tennis matches. The secret files uncovering evidence of widespread match fixing, released by the BBC and Buzzfeed on Monday, found: l A US Open champion and doubles winners at Wimbledon were among a core group of 16 players who had continually been

n Tennis World No.1 Novak Djokovic has confirmed that he was once indirectly offered 110,000 pounds to throw a first round match at a tournament in Russia. The offer came for him to lose in the St. Petersburg Open, although he never ended up playing in the event. n Retired French tennis player Arnaud Clement has admitted that he was approached with a large sum of money to forfeit one of his matches. Clement said that the incident took place in Russia where he was set to play a match, when an “unknown” person approached him with the proposal, which the player refused. n Young Australian tennis player Thanasi Kokkinakis said he was offered money to throw a game.

Educate players on dangers of match-fixing: Murray MELBOURNE/ST. PETERSBURG: World No.2 Andy Murray has called on the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) to ramp up education about the dangers of corruption in the wake of widespread match fixing accusations by players even as denials and ignorance were expressed as reactions to the report of malpractice in the sport. BCCI issues life ban on Chandila MUMBAI: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on January 18 slapped a life ban on Ajit Chandila, while Hiken Shah has been banned for five years on Shashank Manohar charges of spotfixing and corruption in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The BCCI’s disciplinary committee -- board president Shashank Manohar, Niranjan Shah and Jyotiraditya Scindia -- met at the Cricket Centre and pronounced orders in the cases of former Rajasthan Royals off-spinner Chandila and Mumbai batsman Shah. Both the accused appeared in person before the committee on December 24, 2015, and were given time till January 4 to file a written response to the charges against them. The committee met again on January 5 when Shah appeared in person, made an oral submission and a written reply to the findings of the enquiry against him. Chandila, who was arrested by the police for spot-fixing during IPL matches in 2013 along with his then teammates S. Sreesanth and Ankeet Chavan, “is held guilty of misconduct and corruption” under various articles of the BCCI Anti Corruption Code”. “Hiken Shah is banned for five years from playing or representing cricket in any form or to be associated in any way with the activities of the Board or its Affiliates,” BCCI said in a statement.

Oz: India suffer humiliating defeat IANS, CANBERRA

I Murray, who won his opening round match at the Australian Open on Tuesday, said there is not enough being done to educate younger and inexperienced players about the dangers of getting involved in match fixing practices. The Scot, who was one of the first players to become aware of the joint BuzzFeed/BBC investigation on Monday, said it was almost understandable for inexperienced players to be tempted into corruption if racketeers offered substantial amounts of money to fix matches.

ndia suffered an astonishing batting collapse to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory as Australia bounced back from a difficult situation to win the fourth One Day International (ODI) by 25 runs at the Manuka Oval here on January 20. Set a formidable target of 349 runs, India folded up for 323 despite centuries from Shikhar Dhawan (126) and Virat Kohli (106). The visitors were seemingly coasting to victory with the score reading 277/1 in the 38th over. But Dhawan's dismissal triggered a collapse and the visiting team lost nine wickets for 46 runs to be all out in 49.2 overs. Australia now lead the series 4-0. The fifth and last ODI was to be played in Sydney on Saturday. Australia have now won 19 games on the trot. This is the longest winning streak at home by any team since the formidable West Indies registered 18 consecu-

tive victories in the 1980s. Kohli also created a bit of history for the visitors, becoming the fastest batsman to hit 25 ODI centuries, displacing Sachin Tendulkar from the top of the pile. The 27-year-old has taken 162 innings to complete the feat, while Sachin needed 234. Pacer Kane Richardson played a

crucial role in Australia's victory with a five-wicket haul, including four in his last four overs. Fellow pacers John Hastings (2/50) and Mitchell Marsh (2/55) claimed two wickets each while off-spinner Nathan Lyon (1/76) copped a bit of punishment before bagging the wicket of rookie Gurkeerat Singh Mann.

Managing pain can prove fatal

Narcotic pain medication and psychoactive drugs can have a negative impact on a person’s quality of life and may prove lethal if taken long-term IANS, NEW YORK

T

he arrest of Indian-American psychiatrist Narendra Nagareddy for allegedly overprescribing opioids, leading to overdoses and several deaths, has once again highlighted how the use of narcotic pain medication and psychoactive drugs can have a negative impact on a person’s quality of life and may ultimately prove lethal if taken long-term. Research suggests that opioids -- a class of narcotic pain medication derived from opium -- may cause short-term improvement in mood but its long-term use imposes the risk of a new onset of depression. Opioid painkillers are highly effective in reducing pain, but longterm use can lead to dependence and tolerance. As the body becomes used to the drug it becomes less effective so higher doses are needed for the same effect; side effects become more severe and eventually it stops working altogether. A study published in the Annals of Family Medicine this month shows that opioid is linked with onset of depression after controlling for pain and daily morphine equivalent doses. “Patients and practitioners should

be aware that opioid analgesic use of longer than 30 days imposes risk of new onset depression,” said Jeffrey Scherrer, associate professor Saint Louis University in the US, who conducted the study. The opioid drugs he used in the study included codeine, fentanyl, hydrocodone, hydromorphone, levorphanol, meperidine, oxycodone, oxymorphone, morphine and pentazocine. Psychiatrists usually prescribe these drugs for controlling a range of conditions from alcoholism, anxiety and bipolar disorder, to opioid dependence, phobias and other mental illnesses.

According to a research published in November last year in the journal Biology of Sex Differences, more than half of women (52 percent) and a third of men (38 percent) who participated in the study reported doctor-prescribed painkillers as their first contact with opioid drugs. “For whatever reason, this is a growing problem in Canada and in other countries, such as the US, and addiction treatment programmes need to adapt to the changing profile of opioid addiction,” said study senior author Zena Samaan, associate professor at McMaster University in Hamilton in Ontario, Canada.

Medical marijuana may treat migraines NEW YORK: Marijuana can be used to effectively treat people suffering from migraine headaches, new research has found. In the study, patients diagnosed with migraine headaches saw a significant drop in their frequency when treated with medical marijuana. The study, published in the journal Pharmacotherapy, examined patients diagnosed with migraines and treated with medical marijuana between 2010-2014. It found the frequency of migraines dropped from 10.4 to 4.6 headaches per month, a number considered statistically and clinically significant. Of the 121 patients studied, 103 reported a decrease in monthly migraines while 15 reported the same number and three saw an increase in migraines. “There was a substantial improvement for patients in their ability to function and feel better,” said the study’s senior author Laura

Borgelt from the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus in the US. “Like any drug, marijuana has potential benefits and potential risks. It is important for people to be aware that using medical marijuana can also have adverse effects,” Borgelt cautioned. Borgelt said cannabinoid receptors can be found throughout the body, including the brain, connective tissues and immune system. And they appear to have anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties. Cannabinoids are a group of active compounds found in marijuana. These cannabinoids also seem to affect critical neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine. “We believe serotonin plays a role in migraine headaches, but we are still working to discover the exact role of cannabinoids in this condition,” Borgelt said. The study is one of the first to reveal a drop in migraine frequency due to medical marijuana.

Cranberry extract possesses anti-inflammatory properties, which can improve kidney disease following kidney infection and reflux, present in other patients, according to the findings. It helps prevent the prescription of antibiotics in the treatment for recurrent urinary tract infections in infants with vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) -the backward flow of urine from the bladder into the kidneys.

re you the one who joined the neighborhood gym in the hope of a “hook up” and some real action between the sheets? You are not alone. According to a new survey, most of the people who hit the gym have sex on their minds. The findings revealed that while half of the participants used the gym as a hook-up venue, a quarter of them admitted to having sex at the health facility, fusion.net reported, quoting the online poll from high street sex shop Ann Summers involving 2,000 adults. The findings showed that about 25 percent of participants admitted to having had sex at their gyms at some point during their member-

ship. According to an Independent report, nearly 70 percent of women admitted to fantasising about their personal trainer during sex. Even those who were not that

lucky to find someone for “hook up” were at least hoping that something might happen. “Sixty six percent of people cited the very possibility of sex at the

gym and one in 10 people brought condoms in their gym bags just in case,” the report added. The atmosphere at the gym also inspired some people to use online

dating, with 82 percent saying they had used such Apps at the gym. There is some science to it, too. According to previous studies, exercise spikes levels of serotonin and dopamine chemicals. Serotonin and dopamine are chemicals produced in the brain -neurotransmitters -- that improve mood and boost the libido. Serotonin, which is produced by long-term cardio exercise, improves agreeable social behavior while dopamine improves your mood and long-term memory. Cardio exercise produces increased serotonin levels when done to the point of physical and possibly mental fatigue, explained researcher JM Davis in an article that appeared in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

F

orget sorcery, scientists have now discovered that a nasal spray containing a synthetic form of the so called “love hormone” oxytocin could help men attract women. Researchers from the University of Bonn in Germany showed

that women who inhaled it found their partners 15 percent more attractive, Daily Mail reported. The spray contains syntocinon, a synthetic form of the hormone oxytocin, which is naturally released in the brain when people fall in love. Oxytocin plays a key role during childbirth, stimulates milk production in mothers, and helps them bond with babies.

Sleep problems, longer sleep duration stress teens more Wait before you say ‘I love you’ IANS, NEW YORK

IANS, LONDON

N

ew relationships are marked by a series of milestones from the moment you lay eyes on new partner to first kiss, but a new study may have the answer to that all important question -- when to utter those three words? The study by dating site Match.com suggests that many Brits would kiss a new partner almost straight away, jump into bed with them after two weeks, and saying 'I love you' normally happens after five months of dating (precisely 144 days), dailymail.co.uk reported. According to the researchers, who surveyed more than 2,000 men and women for the study, it

also takes longer to hold hands with than to kiss a new partner, with 31 percent claiming they would snog their date immediately, and 34 percent revealing they would wait between one and two weeks to holds hands. More than a quarter (27 percent)

of Brits wait between one and two weeks to sleep with their partner, while 23 percent wait one month. However, three-fifths (60 percent) would introduce their partner to their best friend within the first month, the study revealed. The findings also suggest that British daters also see five months as the perfect time to embark on a very modern dating milestone: updating their social media relationship status (157 days). The study also sheds some light on that all-important six-month mark, suggesting that this is when three major relationship milestones take place: the revealing of one's imperfections (173 days), the first argument (170 days) and when most parental introductions take place.

A

dolescents who experience sleep problems and longer sleep duration are more reactive to stress, which could contribute to academic, behavioural and health issues, says a new study. "This particular population is more likely to experience insufficient sleep, and their functioning is more negatively affected by lower sleep quality," said co-author Sylvie Mrug, psychology professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham in the US. The researchers examined two dimensions of sleep — sleep duration and sleep problems from the perspectives of adolescents and their parents, as well as the levels of the stress hormone cortisol before and after social stress.

Eighty-four adolescents with an average age of 13 took part in the study. In stress tests, it was found that cortisol levels that indicate increased stress response are higher in adolescents with sleep problems. "The result of higher cortisol levels in adolescents experiencing sleep problems was exactly what we expected to see," Mrug said. "We were, however, surprised that longer sleep duration predicted a stronger cortisol response, because previous studies linked shorter sleep duration with higher cortisol levels,” Mrug noted. This could be explained by considering that longer sleep duration does not necessarily reflect higherquality sleep, but instead may serve as another indicator of sleep problems, at least among urban adolescents," Mrug said.
