NAPERVILLE, IL

n August 14, all highways, roads, lanes and bylanes, it seems, were leading to Naper ville, a suburb

of Chicago, with Indians trickling in colorful dresses and head gears irrespective of cast, creed or religion. History was created when a record number—over 15,000--of Indians from across the state lines and far-off places gathered in what is often described as

one of the safest and wealthiest cities in the United States. The Naperville Indian Community Outreach association organized and celebrated 70thIndia Independence Day on August 14 in Naperville. The celebration, preparation, execution and

participation by the community has outsmarted all the previous celebrations of any kind and have raised the bar to a new height of standard, quality and number of participants, volunteers, executives and attendees to a new horizon. GRAND TRADITION The celebration was in continuation of the grand tradition of Naperville for the last two years which has attracted the attention and participation by City of Naperville elected officials, City hall and Mayor, including all the civic agencies.

‘When Trump talks, it helps terrorists’ IANS, LOS ANGELES

emocratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton said the way US Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump talks, it indirectly supports terrorists. Clinton, who made her third appearance on the popular talk show “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”, spattered with humor and witty comebacks and discussed the ongoing presidential elections with the show’s host Kimmel, putting to rest rumors about her

poor health, reported mic.com. “There’s enough evidence now that when Trump talks the way he talks, it actually helps the terrorists because they make a case as they make with this comment ‘Oh well, see, Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, they created ISIS. We heard this from Donald Trump who is running for President,” Clinton said when questioned about Trump’s allegations that Clinton and her party support ISIS. “He is it eh Republican nominee!’ So I think it’s crazy but I also

think it’s harmful,” she added. Clinton also said she would “prefer to be running against somebody who she thought was qualified to be President and temperamentally fit”. When Kimmel questioned Clinton about what she felt the Republican party’s reaction was to Trump, she stated that a number of Republicans are in fact endorsing her and writing letters to her too. “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” is aired on Star World and Star World HD.

S President Barack Obama’s senior climate change advisor Brian Deese is in Beijing to assess key climate change issues ahead of Obama’s upcoming visit to the country for the G20 summit in early September, the US Embassy here said. Deese will meet Vice Premier Zhang Gaoli, and the special representative for climate change in China, Xie Zhenhua, to discuss imperative climate change issues, including the implementation of the agreement reached in 2015 in Paris during the COP21 climate summit, Efe news reported citing a statement by the US Embassy. They will also discuss mutual efforts to amend the Montreal Protocol, adopted in 1987 to protect the Ozone Layer, to include more measures to check hydro

Obama promises aid to help Louisiana WASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama has promised federal aid to Louisiana to help the state fully recover from recent serious flooding that has taken at least 13 lives, emphasizing that this is not about creating “a photo opp issue” in the affected areas, in response to the criticism he had received for not making this visit sooner. Obama toured the Castle Place neighborhood in Baton Rouge, mov-

ing among ruins and debris, including furniture, mattresses and many other objects damaged by the heavy rains and floodwaters that still inundate large zones in southern Louisiana, Efe news reported. The lives of many people “have been upended by this flood. Local businesses have suffered some terrible damage. Families have...certainly lost possessions, priceless keepsakes”, said Obama.

national aviation, following up on previous agreements between Obama and Chinese President Xi Jinping. China and the US, the two most polluting countries in the world, have reached landmark agreements in the last three years to tackle climate change. During Obama’s visit to China in November 2014 to attend the APEC (Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation) forum, the two countries signed a historic agreement to reduce their greenhouse emissions over the next two decades. Obama’s upcoming visit to China for the G20 Summit, to be held in the eastern Chinese city of Hangzhou on September 4 and 5, is also expected to focus on the fight against climate change.

oint production of aircraft and components will be discussed during US Air Force Secretary Deborah Lee James’ upcoming visit to New Delhi where she would take partnership of the two nations “to the next level”. She told reporters here that her mission was to see “how can we deepen our partnerships” adding that co-production of aircraft can be useful militarily while boosting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Make in India program. She was asked about cooperation between India and the US on jet fighters and jet engines that was proposed during Defense Secretary Ashton Carter’s visit to India in April and reports about the possibility of assembling Lockheed Martin’s F-16s and manufacturing Fairchild Republic Warthog-10s in India. “I am also aware of the prime minister’s push for Make in India and the importance of creating new jobs in that sector,” she said, adding “One of the proposals you mentioned, of course, is to co-produce certain aircraft in India. So that will be an example of some-

thing that will be useful from a military standpoint and might play also into the Make in India campaign.” James said she would be discussing with her Indian counterparts about the Defense Technology Trade Initiative (DTTI) that

“I am also aware of the prime minister’s push for ‘Make in India’ and the importance of creating new jobs in that sector,” she said, received a boost during Carter’s visit and his meetings with Defense Minister Manohar Parrikar, and specifically “what are the possible outcomes of that from the Air Force perspective”. “I will be seeking the views of my counterparts what is their opinion of the various proposals on the table, what more needs to happen to perhaps advance the ball on these proposals,” she said. Terrorism would also be a part of the discussion, she said.

‘No India without calm Kashmir’

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh makes a passionate appeal for peace in the Kashmir Valley; an all-party delegation to visit the state soon IANS, SRINAGAR

U

nion Home Minister Rajnath Singh on August 25 made a passionate appeal for peace in the Kashmir Valley, saying India’s future was incomplete without a peaceful Kashmir and announced that an all-party delegation will visit the state soon for talks on ending a protracted violent unrest that has killed nearly 70 people since July 9. At a press conference towards the end of his two-day Kashmir tour, Rajnath Singh conceded a popular demand, saying that an alternative to the use of pellet guns as a tool to control unruly mobs would be found “in a few days”. During his stay in Srinagar, the Home Minister said he met some 300 people, including leaders of all political parties in the state, with whom he had “good talks”. “Everybody wants peace to be restored. We are extremely sad over the situation. We are pained over the loss of lives,” the minister said with Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti by his side. In an oblique reference to separatist leaders, the Home Minister

BRIEFS Cabinet approves surrogacy bill NEW DELHI: The Union Cabinet has given its nod to the long overdue Surrogacy Regulation Bill, 2016, that seeks to prohibit “commercial” surrogacy and denies foreigners, NRIs, single parents, live-in partners and same-sex couples from becoming parents through surrogacy. Only married Indian couples would be allowed to seek surrogacy if they fail to conceive a child after five years of marriage and are able to prove through a medical certificate that they cannot conceive for some medical reasons.

Saradha scam probe: Nalini summoned NEW DELHI: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has summoned former Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram’s wife Nalini Chidambaram for questioning in connection with the multi-crore Saradha chit fund scam. Nalini has been given 10 days’ time to appear before the investigators. Sources said the agency wants to get information about the “transaction details” from Saradha company to Nalini’s accounts.

said people should “not play with the future of Kashmiri youth”. “They (youth) should hold books, pens and laptops in their hands and not stones,” he said. “We are linking the future of Kashmiri youth with the future of India. And I appeal to Kashmir

people to identify those who are creating trouble.” India’s future, he said, is intrinsically linked to the future of Kashmir. He said leaders of all political parties will soon visit here for talks on finding ways to break the log-

jam in the valley. “I have asked the state government to make all preparations for that.” Asked if he invited separatist leaders -- who have been spearheading the agitation -- for talks, Rajnath Singh said the government was ready to hold talks with

anyone who believed in “insaniyat, jamhooriyat and Kashmiriyat”. Notably, he didn’t name Pakistan for stoking trouble in the valley and didn’t repeat that talks over Kashmir will only be held under the realm of the Constitution of India -- unlike previously. It was the minister’s second visit to the valley in a month since the unrest, the deadliest in six years, erupted after the July 8 killing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani. At least 67 civilians have been killed and thousands injured in firing by security forces at pro-freedom demonstrations. Most of the injuries have been caused by pellet guns that have left hundreds partially or fully blinded. Mehbooba Mufti justified the killings by security forces saying those hit by bullets or pellets had not gone to fetch milk or toffees. She was asked how she justified the alleged disproportionate use of force against Kashmiri protesters when as opposition leader she had criticised the government during a similar unrest in 2010 for civilian killings. The Chief Minister got angry and asked a reporter not to compare the two situations.

Submarine data leak rocks India IANS, NEW DELHI

T

he leak of data related to India’s Scorpene submarines created a stir, with Defense Minister Manohar Parrikar seeking a report from the Indian Navy on the documents. The navy, however, stressed that the data in the leaked report is hypothetical, pertaining to simulators, and the signature of a boat can be known only when it hits the seas. The navy also made it clear that the leak did not take place in India. The data, which comprises over 22,000 pages, was leaked, the Australian media reported. It contained documents on the Scorpene submarines, designed by French company DCNS and being built in India by the Mazagaon Dock Limited in Mumbai (Maharashtra) at a cost of around $3.5 billion. The news created ripples in India soon after the report in the Australian media came out. According to sources, experts from the navy started examining the documents on Tuesday night. Defense Minister Parrikar, who sought a report in two days, said it appeared to be a case of hacking. “The first step is to identify if it

relates to us,” Parrikar told reporters here. “The navy chief (Admiral Sunil Lanba) has been asked to analyse what exactly has been leaked,” the minister said, adding his first assessment was that it was an act of hacking and not a 100 per cent leak. “I’ve told the navy chief to find out all the details. Maybe, in a couple of days, I’ll be able share with you.” The navy, in a statement issued

shortly after the minister spoke, stressed the leak did not happen in India. Navy sources, meanwhile, maintained there is nothing to be alarmed about as the data does not pertain to any of the Scorpene submarines currently being built in Mazgaon Docks, Mumbai. “Details in the leaked documents regarding the Scorpene submarine are not valid because the signature can be known only once the boat goes out to the seas,” a

navy source said, adding the specifications mentioned in the document are hypothetical. “How can we know the signature of the boat which is still not done with the trials. The technical and operational details will be written by how we exploit the submarine. So far, even the weapon systems and torpedo are not there.” The navy, nonetheless, held the leak is an issue of concern.

Despite glory, Indian women struggles Women saved the day for India at Rio, and their growing presence was reflected in the 54 female Indian athletes – the largest number ever – at an Olympiad SAUMYA TEWARI

n the 2016 Rio Olympics, shuttler P.V. Sindhu became the first Indian woman to win a silver medal; Sakshi Malik the first Indian female wrestler to win a medal (bronze), gymnast Dipa Karmarkar became the first Indian woman to feature in a gymnastics final, finishing fourth in the vault, and Lalita Babar became the first Indian woman to enter a 3,000 metre steeplechase final, finishing 10th. Eighteen-year-old Aditi Ashok -- the youngest golfer from India -- also entered the final round of the women’s individual golf event. Women saved the day for India at Rio, and their growing presence was reflected in the 54 female Indian athletes -- the largest number ever -- at an Olympiad. While those rising numbers indicate the progress made by Indian sportswomen -- many from small towns and poor families -- in particular, and Indian women in general, a quick look at five key parameters -- working women, education, maternal health, age of

marriage and abortion rates-reveals that India’s women are routinely denied opportunities at education, work and even being born. Working women: Lowest in BRICS, 25 million women leave workforce over a decade Women’s workforce participation in India is the lowest among

Not more than 26 per cent of India’s women in India participated in the workforce, according to a 2013 Labour Bureau report. BRICS nations. A host of other countries, such as Bahrain (39 per cent), Malaysia (45 per cent) and Somalia (37 per cent), do much better, as IndiaSpend reported in March 2015, using World Bank data from 2014. No more than 26 per cent of India’s women in India participated in the workforce, according to a 2013 Labour Bureau report. The rate improved to 27 per cent in

2014, according to a 2015 International Monetary Fund (IMF) study that IndiaSpend reported in July 2016. This is a decline of up to 8 per cent percentage point over 14 years; in 1999, up to 34 per cent of women were a part of India’s workforce. Higher education: More women enrolled, outperform men, but drop out later. While more young women are enrolled in higher education than ever before -- and apparently more successful in clearing 10th-standard board exams than young men-they are either marrying early or not finding or not looking for jobs, according to an IndiaSpend analysis of various data. The enrolment of girls in higher education increased from 39 per cent to 46 per cent from 2007 to 2014, but as data above show, female participation in India’s labour force declined to a low of 27 per cent in 2014 from 34 per cent in 1999.

Kashmir is India's integral part: Mazdak Mazdak, who was in Delhi to garner support of Indians and the handful of Baloch living here for the Baloch cause, says that Kashmir is India’s “internal issue” ASHISH MISHRA AND KUSHAGRA DIXIT

P

rime Minister Narendra Modi has taken a “huge step” by referring to the “humanitarian crisis” in Balochistan, and other world leaders should now follow to highlight the “genocide” and “ethnic cleansing” in the Pakistani province, says a prominent Baloch freedom movement activist. Mazdak Dilshad Baloch, who was in Delhi to garner support of Indians and the handful of Baloch living here for the Baloch cause, says that Kashmir is India’s “internal issue”. “The Prime Minister of world’s largest democracy took a lead role in this movement on a historic place and on a historic day by referring to the humanitarian crisis in Balochistan. That’s a huge step, and we know that other leaders will follow him,” Mazdak, 25,

Baloch freedom movement activist Mazdak Dilshad Baloch in a park of New Delhi. (Photo: IANS)

told IANS. Mazdak, son of prominent author-activist Naela Qadri Baloch and filmmaker Mir Ghulam

Mustafa Raisaini, lives in Canada in exile along with his wife and two brothers. The family was given asylum by Canada in 2014 after sev-

eral attempts on their lives were made in Afghanistan where they reached after fleeing Pakistan in 2010. Asked how the Kashmir issue is different from Balochistan in terms of human rights violations and his perception of India playing the Baloch card to counter Pakistan on Kashmir, Mazdak says, “Kashmir is integral part of India while Balochistan is an international issue.” “Kashmir, historically and geographically has been a part of India for hundreds of years. It has never been a free country, but Balochistan was. It had its own Parliament, a House of Commons and House of Lords. The king was there to lead, but he could not take a decision himself,” he said. “We are an occupied country which has a history of being a kingdom for 700 years. It, unlike Punjab province, is not Pakistan’s internal problem -- it is an interna-

tional problem.” Expecting India and other “humanitarian nations” to raise the issues of a “voiceless” Balochistan at the United Nation and pressurise Pakistan through international embargo, he says, “Either it be the Arab world, North America, European Union, United Kingdom -- all the powers around the world have to stop supporting Pakistan and put sanctions on Pakistan for all the atrocities and genocide going on in Balochistan.” Countering the western Pakistani province’s Chief Minister Sanaullah Khan Zehri’s claim that after Modi’s statement on Balochistan there were anti-India protests in the region, Mazdak says that it was all “state-sponsored drama”. “The people of Balochistan are thankful to Narendra Modi and India.” he added.

Italy quake kills hundreds The powerful 6.2-magnitude earthquake hit central Italy on Wednesday, killing more than 200 people, and injuring and displacing several hundreds others IANS, ROME,

T

Hotel Roma in the historic town of Amatrice. Officials said about 35 people were staying at the hotel and most had managed to get out. About 10 people were still unac-

Almost all the houses there had collapsed, the BBC reported citing local officials as saying. Hardest hit were the small towns and villages in the mountainous area where the regions of Umbria, Lazio and Le Marche meet. More than 1,000 people have been displaced by the quake. The mayor of Amatrice said three-quarters of the town had been destroyed and no building was safe for habitation, the BBC said. Many of those affected were on holiday in the region.

Sarkozy to run for French presidency again India visit on the cards for UN General Assembly President-elect IANS, PARIS

UNITED NATIONS: Sustainable development will be high on the agenda when General Assembly President-elect Peter Thomson visits India next week and meets Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “My main interest will be to discuss how the UN can assist and accelerate the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development,” he said in a statement before his departure Wednesday. The 2030 Agenda is a set of 17 goals for global development adopted in 2015 by world leaders with 2030 as the deadline for meeting them.

Thomson, who is currently Fiji’s permanent representative to the UN, was elected in June as the president of the Assembly’s 71st session that starts next month. He will succeed Mogens Lykketoft of Denmark. During the next Assembly session Thomson will play a crucial role in reviving the Security Council reform process — an issue of importance to India — that has stalled in the current session after a promising start. He has in the past criticized the slow pace of Council reform and called for greater efforts by UN members to deal with it.

F

ormer French President Nicolas Sarkozy is to run for office again as a candidate in the 2017 presidential election, he has formally declared. Sarkozy previously served as the President between 2007 and 2012 for Les Republicains party and was beaten by Francois Hollande when he stood for re-election in 2012. He became France’s first President not to be re-elected for a second term since 1981. His time in office was characterized by a number of scandals, including allegations of corruption. In 2014, he was held in police custody for 15 hours as part of an inves-

tigation into his party’s finances and allegations that he tried to obtain information from a magistrate about legal proceedings against him, the Independent reported. Sarkozy denied the allegations,

accusing political opponents of attempting to run a smear campaign against him to prevent him from reentering the political arena. His perceived extravagancy and penchant for celebrity friends earned him the moniker “President Bling Bling”. During his time out of office, Sarkozy has kept a low profile, with the exception of police dealings. Recent opinion polls have indicated Sarkozy’s popularity has increased in France. Some French political commentators have suggested he has the required experience and authority to lead France as it struggles with the aftermath of recent terrorist attacks. He is expected to lead his campaign based on hard-line approaches to immigration and security.

Indian-origin scientist designs chip that detects inbuilt viruses While software viruses are easy to spot and fix with downloadable patches, deliberately inserted hardware defects are invisible IANS, NEW YORK

R

esearchers led by an Indian-origin scientist have designed a novel chip that can ward off hardware viruses from sabotaging healthcare devices, public infrastructure and financial, military or government electronics. Siddharth Garg, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at the New York University’s Tandon School of Engineering and fellow researchers are developing a chip with both an embedded module that proves that its calculations are correct and an external module that validates the first module’s proofs. While software viruses are easy to spot and fix with downloadable patches, deliberately inserted hard-

ware defects are invisible and act surreptitiously. For example, a secretly inserted “back door” function could allow attackers to alter or take over a device or system at a specific time. Garg’s configuration, an example of an approach called “verifi-

MIDWEST / EASTCOAST

able computing” (VC), keeps tabs on a chip’s performance and can spot telltale signs of Trojan viruses. Under the system proposed by Garg and his colleagues, the verifying processor can be fabricated separately from the chip. The chip

designer then turns to a trusted foundry to build a separate, less complex module: an ASIC (application-specific integrated circuit), whose sole job is to validate the proofs of correctness generated by the module of the untrusted chip. According to Garg, this arrangement provides a safety net for the chip maker and the end user. “Under the current system, I can get a chip back from a foundry with an embedded Trojan. It might not show up during post-fabrication testing, so I’ll send it to the customer,” Garg noted in a university statement. “But two years down the line, it could begin misbehaving. The nice thing about our solution is that I don’t have to trust the chip because every time I give it a new input, it produces the output and the proofs of correctness,” he added.

Siblings ordered off plane over IS claims LONDON: Three Indian-origin Muslim siblings were allegedly ordered off the plane and interrogated by British police after fellow passengers accused them of being members of the Islamic State (IS) militant group, the media reported. Sakina Dharas, 24, her sister Maryam, 19, and their brother Ali, 21, were on board EasyJet flight EZY3249 from London’s Stansted Airport to the Italian city of Naples on August 17, aljazeera.com reported. As the plane was about to take off, a crew member ordered the siblings off the aircraft and escorted them down the staircase to the tarmac, where they were met by armed police and an MI5 agent who questioned them for one hour, Sakina was quoted as saying. Two passengers told authorities that the siblings had been looking at a mobile phone screen that showed either Arabic text or the words “praise be to Allah”, Sakina said. “A passenger on your flight has claimed that you three are members of ISIS,” the MI5 agent said to the siblings.

espite a hefty hike in fees of US H-1B and L-1 visas, there has been no drop in number of applications from India and the country continues to be the highest recipient of H-1B visas, the highest US official in Washington dealing with international visa issues said here on Tuesday. “Indian citizens receive almost 70 percent of all the H-1B visas issued worldwide,” Michele Bond, US Assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs, said during a media interaction here. “Overwhelmingly, Indian applicants are the ones who are successful in qualifying for these visas,” she said. As for L-1 visas, she said that Indian citizens received around 30 percent of all such visas issued. The US doubled the visa fees to

$4,000 for H-1B and to $4,500 for L-1 at the end of last year. Indian IT bellwethers have most of their employees working on site holding H-1B visas. Bond said that in US fiscal year 2015 (October 1, 2014 to September 30, 2015), more than 110,000 H-1B visas were issued to Indian citizens. “This is a priority for us because we are part of a bilateral India and US effort to grow their economic and commercial ties,” she said. Asked if there has been any move to revisit the issue of hike in visa fees, she said: “These specific visas where the fees changed — the H and L visas — we have seen no drop in the number of applications for those visas, no lessening of interest in obtaining those visas. It was a legislative change, so we were implementing that law.”

n Indo-Canadian Sikh Cabinet Minister Bardish Chagger, was sworn in as the new leader of the government in the House of Commons, becoming the first woman to hold the position in the Canadian parliament, the media reported. “This is a tremendous opportunity. I have been involved in the political process for basically my whole life,” Chagger was quoted as saying, after her swearing-in ceremony at Rideau Hall in Ottawa, by cbc.ca on Friday. Chagger, 36, replaces House leader Dominic LeBlanc. “I know what democracy should

look like. Democracy should be engaging Canadians. That is the leadership of our Prime Minister,” Chagger added. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed his confidence that Chagger will be “a worthy successor.” Chagger, who is a rookie MP and is one of the four Sikhs — Harjit Sajjan, Navdeep Bains, Amarjeet Sohi being the other three — was elected to Trudeau’s cabinet in 2015, in a move that drew worldwide attention. Chagger had a brief and unremarkable stint as small business and tourism minister. She will retain that portfolio in addition to her new position. Chagger was born and raised in

aking its interest in the digital health sector to the next level, tech giant Apple has quietly acquired personal health data startup Gliimpse founded by two Indian-origin entrepreneurs. According to media reports, the acquisition reportedly happened earlier but was not publicly announced yet. An Apple spokesperson has now responded, saying: “Apple buys smaller technology companies from

time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans.” Founded in 2013 by Anil Sethi and Karthik Hariharan, Gliimpse provides a secure platform where

consumers can manage and share their medical records and info. According to Sethi’s LinkedIn page, Gliimpse -- like many startups -- was born of a personal need. In recent months, Apple has acquired HealthKit, CareKit and ResearchKit startups that allow patients, doctors and researchers to access important health and wellness data via a range of mobile devices. Apple has also released its HealthKit app which helps users monitor personal health and fitness data on iPhone 6.

BY A STAFF WRITER APERVILLE, IL -- On August 14, all highways, roads, lanes and bylanes, it seems, were leading to Naperville, a suburb of Chicago, with Indians trickling in colorful dresses and head gears irrespective of cast, creed or religion. History was created when a record number—over 15,000--of Indians from across the state lines and far-off places gathered in what is often described as one of the safest and wealthiest cities in the United States. The Naperville Indian Community Outreach association organized and celebrated 70thIndia Independence Day on August 14 in Naperville. The celebration, preparation, execution and participation by the community has outsmarted all the previous celebrations of any kind and have raised the bar to a new height of standard, quality and number of participants, volunteers, executives and attendees to a new horizon.

Jayalalithaa on a plea alleging abuse of power by her. Issuing notice on the plea of DMDK leader ‘Captain’ Vijaykant, a bench of Justice Dipak Misra and Justice C. Centre okays NIA probe into cases of missing from Kerala NEW DELHI/THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Union Home Ministry on Tuesday gave the nod for the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to take up the cases registered in Kerala’s Kasargode and Palakkad against some youth, who along with their families, left their homes during May-July with the intention of joining terror outfit Islamic State. The Home Ministry order points out that the preliminary inquiry has revealed that the aforesaid accused persons have entered into a criminal conspiracy to support and further the terrorist activities of IS. At least 21 people including women and children have been reported missing from these two districts and it was the Kerala Police which first registered the cases after some of the missing people sent messages to their families here about their whereabouts, while some of them had said that “they have reached the Islamic State”. Of the 21 people, 17 are from Kasargode district in the northern tip of Kerala, and four from Palakkad district. The Tirupur court had issued non-bailable warrants against the couple following their nonappearance before it in the defamation case filed in February. Vijaykant is facing 14 defamation

Kerala youth icons for tobacco-free education IANS, THIRUVANANTHAPURAM

K

erala’s popular youth icons have appealed to the state government and society to work towards making educational institutions here tobacco-free. Popular music composer, singer and musician M. Jayachandran, state-award winning actor Parvathy Thiruvothu and Chairman of Kochi-based Startup Village Sanjay Vijayakumar have come together to fight the tobacco menace among youth. Jayachandran said youngsters start off with cigarettes and tobacco, and soon get lured by drugs. He said, “Educational institutions,

which are the grooming grounds for creating responsible citizens, have to be kept tobacco-free.” Vijayakumar said, “Kerala

‘Music will always remain integral part of my life’ CHENNAI: Debutant Karan Hariharan, son of popular singer Hariharan, may have chosen to be an actor, but he says music can’t be separated from his life as it has an integral part to play in it. “Ever since it was announced that I’m being launched as an actor, the question that’s been asked to me the most is, ‘Why didn’t you take up a career in music?’ It’s not like I don’t sing. I do, and I play the piano and guitar and I also program music. Even if I don’t pursue music as a career,

it’s a very integral part of my life,” Karan told IANS. Making his acting debut in this week’s thriller, “Missing on a Weekend”, he says his heart lies in acting. “I’ve never asked myself if I’m good at acting. Even as a kid, while playing instruments and singing, I was acting, like I was performing in a show. It didn’t take me much time to realize that’s where my heart really lies,” he said. Asked when he realised he was equipped to be an actor, he said: “The

sheer need to be an actor happened when I was 14 or 15. Being aware that you have the confidence to do something is different than realising you want to do it professionally. It takes a lot more than just the belief. “It was after I returned from my acting course in Los Angeles, that I truly believed I was ready to be an actor.” He said making inroads into the industry wasn’t a cakewalk, despite his father’s popularity. “As a person, I’m very stubborn, and hence, I didn’t take dad’s help. I didn’t want to wake up one day and question myself, ‘Have I achieved this or was it given to me’). I used to give auditions under the name of Karan Ash (read, Anantha Subramani Hariharan). That way people didn’t know who I was and I believe it’s that challenge that has brought me to this stage,” the actor said.

WHY NOT disband FIA? FIA FALLS FLAT AS

I-DAY FESTIVITY FLOPS he curtain finally seems to have been drawn on August 20 on the Federation of Indian Associations Chicago which was proudly celebrating the India Independence day on a grand scale for the past thirty years. This disaster happened due to lack of vision, planning and leadership. This

time, all the walkers were in a single file with enough elbow room for all with no elected officials and chief guest attending the parade. The parade of mostly empty floats was reviewed at the corner of Devon and Washtenaw Avenue by FIA executive committee and trustees. Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, Dorothy Brown, Deepak Kant Vyas, Smita Shah, and Syed Hussaini of Wintrust Bank addressed the parade.

year’s both badly-organized and poorlyattended events have brought FIA to a screeching halt--at a dead end, Indeed, an embarrassed FIA has been silent on what went wrong and why it could not meet the expectations of the Indian diaspora. The parade on Devon Ave, depicting and celebrating India’s Independence 69 years ago on August 15, 1947, was witnessed by hardly around 300 people, most of them shopkeepers and shoppers

POOR VISION FIA, marred by bad leadership, poor vision, fake and misleading advertising, perhaps held the parade to cloud misuse of public funds and contributions. The Consul General of India at Chicago did not attend the parade. Local elected officials Debra and Ira Silverstein, Jesse White, Mayor Rahm Emmanuel also did not attend the parade, though their names and photographs were

Mafat Patel, CEO of nationwide grocery stores chain Patel Bros showed his dismay over the ‘poorest’ show by FIA in the parade and the banquet. In his view, FIA has shamed the community and India as well. All the office-bearers should resign and FIA should be disbanded and restarted with fresh community faces/leaders. He observed that non-contributing directors of FIA were hankering for publicity by fighting to be in the vanguard of the parade and for photo opportunities. Though he was declared by FIA for award, he was neither contacted nor consented by those who were responsible and hence he could not attend the function. bearers of FIA. There was no traditional lamp lighting and the event started with national anthems and address by Adarsh Shastri. In his speech, Shastri welcomed all and applauded the journey of growth of India and Indians in a foreign land. In his short speech, he quoted J F Kennedy and his calling for the youth to have mantra of ‘Why Not’ in place of ‘Why’? He noticed that Indians were leaders in and photos were removed without any explanation to the community. Out of nine dignitaries advertised and proclaimed, only two attended the event. academy’s children and renowned Kathak dancer from India Sangeeta Saxena brought some cheer to the dull and empty event. Saxena, along with her team of Jasmol, Ena and Ashankh, portrayed the song “Aye Mere Vatan Ke Logon” and the sacrifices by hundreds of freedom fighters. Her dance and drama portrayal brought tears to many when they went down the memory lanes and remembered the sacrifices by patriotic Indians. UNDESERVED AWARDS FIA traditionally bestow awards each year on achievers and the community activists who have a proven record of community services. This year’s many awards were a surprise to all, including trustees, office- bearers of FIA and even awardees. These awards were decided unilaterally by top executive only. Some awardees were repeat award winners for no visible contribution as such to community and two others did not attend the award ceremony either because they were not contacted, consented or given enough time to schedule their participation. The community is aghast as to what happened and why- FIA, a brand name built up over so many years and by so many of community leaders has fallen flat. It was the same FIA in New York which attracts global attention and brings more than one hundred thousand onlookers to the parade and over fifty floats with global celebrities like film stars and other achievers. LAME EXCUSE In some interviews and news, the FIA top executive informed falsely and dubiously that he has decided to cancel the guest of honor appearance of Bollywood actress and dancer Harshita Bhatt. For other Guest of Honor Babul Supriyo, the reason presented in interview was that Prime Minister’s office was unlikely to permit him to attend the parade and banquet. It is another lame excuse to cover up the failure and confuse the community.Investigations by Hi India

QUESTIONS GALORE The Indian diaspora of Chicagoland, who contributes graciously and magnanimously to FIA for the cause, is looking for answers to the following : 1. Why fake and misleading flyers and advertisements with Bollywood stars and elected US officials was circulated? 2. Why the awards were given to people without any community services or contributions to the society? Why there was no functional award committee and why profiles of achievers were not sought from public who contribute generously? 3. Why there was no check and balances on the funds withdrawn and spent sometimes on personal causes? 4. Why FIA has stopped doing Mela and downtown celebration? 5. Why FIA believes that A bad parade is better than no parade at all? 6. Why Community is not involved with FIA and its expenditures are not transparent? 7. Why no proper and timely invitations were sent to elected officials and other dignitaries? Why follow-up was never done? 8. Why same few faces are seen operating year after year in FIA? Is this lack of participation by community, lack of leadership or blockage by old faces? 9. Why the people with a track record of lawsuits on FIA are not debarred from FIA despite intentionally destroying FIA? 10. Why there is no custodian of FIA documents? Why Tax returns and bank statements are not available to community as they contribute year after year to the cause of parade? 11. Why FIA spent callously the public funds by paying for 400 guests for the banquet when, in fact, only 125-150 people attended? Who is answerable for this waste of public contribution? 12. Why bank account and mailing address are changed so frequently? Is it not feasible to control and audit the collections and expenses ?. 13. One social media-Chicago Desi–questioned the existence and support by community to FIA if no proper answer and transparent account of funds are collected and spent is presented before community to review. revealed that the statement was false, malicious and a blatant lie. Both the stars who could have attracted a huge crowd to the parade and the banquet were never contacted properly and the funds required for the expenses were not arranged on time and the stars were left in a limbo for want of proper confirmation. Many in FIA wondered how the PMO got involved to cancel

The Guest Of Honor for Parade. The information and declaration in the same interview / statement that stars were replaced by 3 Idiots actor Omi Vaidya also proved to be false and misleading as there was no proposal or approval before FIA Board. As per the interview, the banquet was to start with lamp-lighting by Consul General, whereas no lamp was arranged by FIA for the occasion.

MIDWEST / EASTCOAST Jamil Khan, Tony Ali and Usman Ali, all expressed their unhappiness over the poorest show ever by FIA on Devon. They demanded public apology by FIA and move on for better tomorrow. Omar Bukhari, a shopper on Devon at the time of the parade, was surprised at the passage of the procession. “It was finished before even it was started”, he felt. Harish Bhatt: Surprised on the comment of top executive of FIA that he cancelled the Bollywood dancer as Guest of Honor. Her four appearances were cancelled for not replying on time and expenses reimbursement. No courtesy cancellation or regret letter was sent to both of Guests of Honor – Union Minister Babul Supriyo and Harshita Bhatt. Alderwoman of 50th Ward never showed up and there was no Air India raffle. The promise of 30 floats and appearance by Jesse White, Secretary of State and his team in the parade was a bloated claim by the top executive of FIA. While it was claimed in his released statement that organizers must adhere to strict guidelines and abide by modesty, decency, and respect, FIA has no guidelines, no manual and no strict rules and regulations to follow or adhere to. MISLEADING ADS Many attendees in the banquet expressed their unhappiness over wantonly misleading false advertising in the flyers and felt that the organizers should be held legally responsible. The FIA top executive put the blame for poor attendance of 300 people on bad weather and bad elements in FIA. He explained that though 300 people were physically present, thousands were present in spirit.

The findings showed that consuming additional calories from sugary beverages like soda, energy drinks, and sweetened coffee can increase risk of weight gain and obesity, as well as Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. “Regardless of how many servings of sugar-sweetened beverages you consume, replacing even just one serving can be of benefit,” said Kiyah J. Rohit Bal launches Get hitched to cut down alcohol crystal collection IANS, NEW YORK

NEW DELHI: Known for his understated elegance, Indian couturier Rohit Bal has collaborated for the first time with the artisans and crystal cutters of the Czech Republic and Slovakia to create an exclusive crystal collection. The designs, shapes and motifs of the offerings are all in the classic Rohit Bal styles -- from lotus gardens to dancing peacocks -- full of the ace designer’s inimitable style and a very strong Indian sensibility. The line lends itself to European craftsmanship and hand-cut crystals of the finest quality. “This collection is very close to my heart. It is a perfect blend of a strong Indian sensibility and an incredible European heritage of fine handmade crystal. The combination works magically,” Bal said in a statement. The line is made of 24 per cent lead crystal and is completely handmade by the artisans and crystal cutters of Bratislava. It varies from limited edition tableware to collectible ornamental objects that include bowls, vases, tea sets, platters, salvers, vases and urns. eing in a relationship could be wonderful in more ways than one. A new study indicates that people who are married, or cohabiting, generally tend to drink less - that’s fewer drinks, and less frequently. Singles are more inclined to drink more often, and in larger quantities, the findings showed. “It seems that intimate relationships may provide a real benefit in terms of drinking behavior, maybe through mechanisms such as a monitoring effect that partners have on each other,” said lead study author

Diana Dinescu from the University of Virginia. For the study, the researchers compared the reported drinking patterns of twins in and out of relationships.

The study concluded that once a relationship is over, people may be more inclined to drink more heavily in a session, but not necessarily more frequently.

ove at first sight is a myth -and lovers need to meet at least four times before Cupid's arrow strikes their hearts, said a study. The findings showed that people often find themselves drawn to individuals after multiple encounters, even when there was no initial attraction. "Cupid's arrow is often slow to strike. It may be attributable to the gradual change in attractiveness

from repetition," Ravi Thiruchselvam, Psychologist at Hamilton College in New York, was quoted as saying by dailystar.co.uk on Sunday. For the study, the team

gave snaps of people's faces to a group of young men and women. The researchers then wired the participants brains to monitors as the group ranked the attractiveness of people in the pictures. The subjects were then shown the snaps for a second time, and rated those they found attractive much more highly. The attraction was even stronger on the third occasion and strongest of all on the fourth. The fourth attempt showed extra activity around the excitement and pleasure centres of the brain.

Mediterranean diet, exercise can cut risk of Alzheimer’s NEW YORK: Mediterranean diet, regular physical activity and a normal body mass index can reduce the incidence of protein build-ups that are associated with the onset of Alzheimer’s disease, says a study. The findings showed that each one of several lifestyle factors -- a healthy body mass index, physical activity and a Mediterranean diet -were linked to lower levels of plaques and tangles on the brain scans. Plaque, deposits of a toxic protein called beta-amyloid in the spaces between nerve cells in the brain; and tangles, knotted threads of the tau protein found within brain cells, are considered the key indica-

tors of Alzheimer’s. The Mediterranean diet is rich in fruits, vegetables, legumes, cereals and fish and low in meat and dairy, and characterized by a high ratio of monounsaturated to saturated fats, and mild to moderate alcohol consumption. Earlier studies have linked a healthy lifestyle to delays in the onset of Alzheimer’s disease. However, the new study is the first to demonstrate how lifestyle factors directly influence abnormal proteins in people with subtle memory loss who have not yet been diagnosed with dementia, the researchers said.

Small reductions in heart and respiratory rates, as well as lowered blood pressure, were also linked to music interventions. The results of single studies suggest that music listening may reduce the need for anaesthetics, analgesics and decreased recovery time and duration of hospitalization.

ating oily fish twice in a week -- equivalent to 500 mg per day of dietary omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids -- can decrease the risk of sight-threatening diabetic retinopathy in middle-aged and older individuals with Type 2 diabetes, finds a study. Diabetic retinopathy is a diabetes complication that affects eyes and has become a leading global cause of vision loss. It is caused by damage to the blood vessels of the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye (retina). The increasing prevalence of Type 2 diabetes mellitus, coupled

with an increased lifespan, has resulted in a steady rise of disability in older individuals with diabetes. The retina is rich in long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids. Many experimental models have supported dietary long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids’ protection against diabetic retinopathy, however, clinical data is lacking, the researchers said, in the paper published online by JAMA Ophthalmology. The team conducted a prospective study within the randomized clinical trial Prevencion con Dieta Mediterranea (PREDIMED).

twins are a little higher than the general population,” said lead author David Sharrow from University of Washington. The data comes from the Danish Twin Registry, one of the oldest repositories of information about

twins. The authors looked at 2,932 pairs of same-sex twins who survived past the age of 10 who were born in Denmark between 1870 and 1900, so all had a complete lifespan. They then compared their ages at death with data for the overall Danish population. For men, they found that the peak benefit of having a twin came in the mid-40s. That difference is about 6 percentage points, meaning that if out of 100 boys in the general population, 84 were still alive at age 45, then for twins that number was 90.

Weight gain in pregnancy may lead to preterm birth IANS, WASHINGTON

A

bnormalities in interval between pregnancies, mother’s body mass index (BMI) prior to pregnancy and the amount of weight gain in pregnancy can lead to preterm birth, a new study has found. The study, published in the journal Maternal and Child Health Journal, showed that if these factors were modified, it could reduce the risk of premature births.

“The highest risks for premature birth were in women who were underweight, had poor weight gain during pregnancy, or short periods of time between pregnancies. Excessive weight gain in obese women also increased the risk,” said Emily DeFranco, Associate Professor at the University of Cincinnati. DeFranco and her colleagues conducted the study from birth records of nearly 4,00,000 people. Potentially modifiable risk factors for preterm birth were present in

more than 90 per cent of women in the study. Fewer than half of women begin pregnancy with a normal weight, and only 32 per cent achieve the recommended pregnancy weight gain.
