INDIA-US RELATIONS:
Prime Minister Narendra Modi meets US President Barack Obama, in New York, US on Sept 28, 2015. (Photo: IANS/PIB)
A year of Modbama bromance
Obama's warming up to Modi took the India-US ties to a new high in the year gone by ARUN KUMAR, WASHINGTON
A
"budding bromance" between India and the US or "Modbama" as Foreign Policy called it, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Barack Obama, took their ties to a new high in the year gone by. The year began with Modi, once a persona non grata in the US, staging
5
what was called a "diplomatic coup" with an invitation to Obama to be the first US president to be the chief guest at India's Republic Day. Beyond the symbolism, Obama's "game changing" second visit to India in four years saw "Barack" warming up to Modi and sent what the US called an "important message" to the world about their commitment to realize the full potential of India-US relationship.
The White House's first National Security Strategy since 2010 reflected the changing relationship with Obama saying the US was "primed
2015 IN RETROSPECT to unlock the potential of its relationship with India" as part of its rebalance to Asia and the Pacific. Nine months later, Modi returned the compliment with yet another
hugely successful visit to the US with a warm hug for Obama, a courtship with Silicon Valley and a love fest with the Indian diaspora. But even before Modi and Obama had their fifth bilateral meeting in New York, the two nations, at their first strategic and commercial dialogue, reached five key agreements. Topping the list was a decision to step up their counter-terrorism
efforts with Washington, for once, recognizing the threat posed by South Asian terror groups, including Pakistan based Lashkar-e-Taiba, responsible for the 2008 Mumbai terror attack, and the D company. Defense Minister Manohar Parrikar ended the year on another high note. "Gelling well" with his US counterpart Ashton Carter, they agreed to further expand their growing defense partnership to make it what Carter called an "anchor of global security." As Carter welcomed India's rise in the Asia-Pacific region, the two countries committed to identify additional projects for possible codevelopment and co-production of high technology items. Meanwhile, Obama called his "friend and partner" Modi a couple of times on a new hotline, first to win his support for the Paris climate deal and then to thank him for India's positive role in reaching the historic accord. At his year-end victory lap, Obama highlighted American leadership in bringing China, India and Brazil on board for the Paris climate deal among his successes of 2015 from thawing relations with Cuba to halting Iran's nuclear programme.
Clinton, Trump war of words gets hot ARUN KUMAR, WASHINGTON
A
war of words between Republican and Democratic presidential frontrunners Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton has intensified over her charge that he has become a recruiting tool for ISIS. Trump demanded an apology for Clinton's claim at the December 19 Democratic debate that Trump's rhetoric against Muslims is being used as propaganda by terrorist groups. "I will demand an apology from Hillary. She should apologize," Trump said on NBC News. "She lies about emails," he said. "She lies about Whitewater. She lies about everything. She will be a disaster as president of the United States." Clinton camp's blunt response was "Hell no"-she won't apologize.

Her spokesman, Brian Fallon said Monday: "Hillary Clinton will not be apologizing to Donald Trump for correctly pointing out how his hateful rhetoric only helps ISIS recruit more terrorists." Clinton came under heavy criticism from fact-checkers when she said at the debate that ISIS is
"showing videos of Donald Trump insulting Islam and Muslims in order to recruit more radical jihadists." White House and National Security Council officials told ABC News they are unaware of any examples of ISIS including Trump in the terrorist group's videos.
US to fight multidrug-resistant tuberculosis WASHINGTON: The White House released a plan to combat "global rise" of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB). The plan released on December 22 identified actions the US government will take in the next three or five years. "Although any transmission of TB is of public health importance, an outbreak
sparked by an individual with undiagnosed MDR-TB or XDR-TB could have serious consequences due to the difficulty and costs associated with treating patients infected with these resistant strains," a statement said. The plan included a goal of improving international capacity and collaboration to combat the disease, which will
be done through "strategic investments" to broaden access to diagnosis and treatment in the most affected communities. The White House also called for accelerating research to combat MDR-TB, including developing rapid tests to diagnose TB, novel therapies and drug regimens to cure TB and MDR-TB within weeks.
NASA suspends planned launch of key Mars mission IANS, WASHINGTON
I
n a setback to future Mars exploration, NASA has decided to suspend the planned March 2016 launch of the Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations Geodesy and Heat Transport (InSight) mission to Mars. The decision follows unsuccessful attempts to repair a leak in a section of the prime instrument in the science payload, the US space agency said in a statement on December 22. "We push the boundaries of space technology with our missions to enable science but space exploration is unforgiving and the bottom line is that we're not ready to launch in the 2016 window," said
John Grunsfeld, associate administrator for NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington, DC. "A decision on a path forward will be made in the coming months, but one thing is clear: NASA remains fully committed to the scientific discovery and exploration of Mars," he added. The instrument involved is the Seismic Experiment for Interior Structure (SEIS), a seismometer provided by France’s Centre National d'Ăƒtudes Spatiales (CNES). Designed to measure ground movements as small as the diameter of an atom, the instrument requires a vacuum seal around its three main sensors to withstand the harsh conditions of the Martian environment.

Modi should step down: Kejriwal Addressing a special session of the Delhi assembly, Kejriwal launches scathing attack on the prime minister, while also asking him to sack Jaitley; Modi says Jaitley would come out with flying colors IANS, NEW DELHI
Delhi HC notice to Kejriwal, others in defamation suit
D
elhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on December 22 sought Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s resignation for ordering the CBI to raid his office, even as Modi declared that Finance Minister Arun Jaitley would come out in flying colors from the DDCA corruption charges. Addressing a special session of the Delhi assembly, Kejriwal launched his most scathing attack on Modi while simultaneously asking him to sack Jaitley from the cabinet for his involvement in the financial bungling in Delhi’s cricket board — a charge Jaitley has denied. The Congress also sought Jaitley’s resignation from the cabinet for the sake of his “dignity and honor”. “I demand Prime Minister Modi’s resignation for the fraudulent raid he ordered to save Arun Jaitley,” the AAP leader said to thumping of
NEWS DIGEST Modi optimistic of Russia visit NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said he is very optimistic about his two-day visit to Russia starting December 23 during which he will attend the 16th India-Russia annual summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin. “As I commence this visit... I am very optimistic about the outcome of this visit,” Modi said in a predeparture statement. He recalled the time when as Gujarat chief minister in 2001 he accompanied then prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to Russia. “This was, perhaps, one of the first India-Russia annual Summits, a practice that goes on till date,” Modi stated.
2- wheelers exempt from odd-even formula NEW DELHI: Two wheelers will be exempt from the odd-even formula the Delhi government wants to implement in the first half of January to curb air pollution, an official said. “Two wheeler riders will be exempted from the scheme because their number is huge and the public transport is not that great,” the official told IANS. Women who drive cars may also be exempted, official said. There are over 5 million two wheelers in the capital,. The city’s increasing toxic air levels have prompted the judiciary to seek drastic action.
desks by his party colleagues. “He should feel ashamed,” Kejriwal thundered, referring to Modi and the December 15 raid by the Central Bureau of Investigation, which has denied searching Kejriwal’s office and said that it only targeted his principal secretary Rajendra Kumar for corruption. He alleged that despite 50 hours
of interrogation spread over six days, the CBI had not been able to build a case of corruption against Rajendra Kumar. Addressing BJP MPs earlier in the day, Modi said Jaitley would come out in “flying colors” from the episode — just as L.K. Advani did when he was charged in the hawala case in the 1990s.
NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court has issued notice to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and five other AAP leaders in a defamation suit filed by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley. Joint Registrar K. Venugopal sought replies from Kejriwal, Kumar Vishwas, Raghav Chadha, Ashutosh, Sanjay Singh and Deepak Bajpai by February 5. The court said: “Issue notice to the defendants (AAP leaders). They have to file written statements within three weeks.” While Chadha, Ashutosh, Sanjay Singh and Bajpai were present in the court, Kejriwal and Vishwas were not. Jaitley has sought Rs.100 million in damages following the Aam Aadmi

The pilot and co-pilot died in the incident so did eight others of the Border Security Force. BSF Director General D.K. Pathak announced a compensation of Rs.1.5 million for the families of each deceased. “An amount of Rs.1.5 million will be given from the BSF internal fund in addition to Rs.1 million, which is the ex-gratia from the government,” he told media.
The passengers were identified as Deputy Commandant D. Kumar, Inspectors S.N. Sharma, Ravindra Kumar Yadav, SubInspectors Chotte Lal Sharma, Surender Singh, Rabinder Kumar, Assistant Sub-Inspector D.P.
Chauhan and Constable R.K. Rawat. The pilot was Bhagwati Prasad Bhatt, and the co-pilot was Rajesh Shivrain. The flight was on way to Ranchi ferrying six technicians for repair of Mi-17 V5 stationed at Ranchi.
Party leaders’ statements on alleged financial irregularities in DDCA. Jaitley has also filed a criminal defamation complaint in a lower court, saying the statements would cause “irreversible damage” to his reputation.
Parliament passes juvenile justice bill NEW DELHI: Parliament on December 22 passed the juvenile justice bill. However, members of Left parties walked out of the Rajya Sabha before the bill was passed, demanding that it should be sent to a select committee of the house. The Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Bill, 2015 was passed by the Lok Sabha in May. The bill provides for the trial of those between 16 and 18 years of age as adults for heinous offenses. Also, anyone between the age of 16 and 18 who commits a less serious offense may be tried as an adult if he is apprehended after he attains the age of 21. CPI-M leader Sitaram Yechury called it an emotional move.
Ram temple issue rocks Rajya Sabha, Oppn targets BJP IANS, NEW DELHI
T
he Rajya Sabha’s proceedings were disrupted twice in the pre-lunch session on December 23 over the issues of a Ram temple in Ayodhya. Soon after the upper house met for the day, Janata Dal-United member K.C. Tyagi raised the issue of stones being transported and carved for constructing the proposed Ram temple at Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh. He said that tension is being created in Ayodhya, where
the Babri mosque once stood. “A similar situation (to what prevailed earlier) is being created in Ayodhya once again,” Tyagi said. Members of the Samajwadi Party, Bahujan Samaj Party and the Congress too supported him. BSP leader Mayawati accused the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh of trying to derive political mileage by again raking up the Ram temple issue. “There should not be anything that is in contempt of the Supreme Court. It’s the responsibility of the
Uttar Pradesh government to maintain law and order,” she said. “Stones are being polished since 1990, and the site is around oneand-a-half km away from the dis-
puted site. Both government and BJP firmly believe the court decision should be respected,” Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said.

Governance lost in confrontation
With parliament held hostage by the warring MPs and the shadow cast over Delhi govt by CBI, neither can Modi push forward his legislative program nor can chief minister focus on routine administration AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI
The Congress has apparently made up its mind to stall Modi’s development plans at any cost lest their enactment boosts the government’s image
T
he contrast between the two main opponents of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Delhi could not have been more stark. On one side is the 130-year-old Congress, the so-called Grand Old Party whose grandeur has begun to fray at the edges. On the other is the new kid on the block, the Aam Admi Party (AAP), which is just over two years old. Probably because of its youth, the AAP displays a kind of aggression which, in the last few days, has crossed all limits of decency with its leader, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, calling Prime Minister Narendra Modi a coward and a psychopath following a raid by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on the Delhi secretariat. To this date, Kejriwal hasn’t withdrawn his remarks, presumably because it is not in his nature to do so. Throughout his career of a few years as a public figure, his combativeness has been the most distinc-
the charges - of which he claims he was cleared by the Manmohan Singh government - are meant to divert attention from the allegedly shady financial deals of Kejriwal’s principal secretary which led to the CBI raid. The murkiness of the entire affair is obvious but, to the average person, what will be highly disconcerting is that in the midst of these personal and political battles, the governance of both the country and of the state of Delhi is bound to suffer. With parliament held hostage by the warring MPs and the shadow cast over the Delhi government by the CBI, neither can Modi push forward his legislative programme nor can the chief minister focus on
tive feature of his persona. It has also won him not inconsiderable support among mainly the lower middle classes because of the belief that he is a fearless fighter against corruption. Even if Kejriwal receives some
support for castigating the CBI for acting at the Modi government’s behest – as has come from Nitish Kumar and Mamata Banerjee – his abusive diatribes against the prime minister have undermined his standing to a considerable extent.
This setback may be the reason why he is now concentrating more on Jaitley for the latter’s suspected involvement in financial irregularities in the Delhi and District Cricket Association. But, as Jaitley has pointed out,
the nitty-gritty of routine administration. It is now clear that the goods and services law will miss the deadline of being enacted by April next year, although it is being supported by an increasing number of parties, of which the latest backers are the Janata Dal-United, the Bahujan Samaj Party and the Trinamool Congress. However, it is not the AAP which poses the main hindrance to its passage in parliament, but the Congress which has apparently made up its mind to stall Modi’s development plans at any cost lest their enactment boosts the government’s image.
In the heart of Europe’s ‘terrorist hub’ HARDEV SANOTRA, MOLENBEEK (BELGIUM)
T
o a casual visitor, this province of Brussels may look like any other — a bit run down in parts, but largely having the glass-fronted stores, cafes and bars visible in most other places across Europe. The distinction though is the dress of choice among many women. Everywhere, you see the hijab, not unlike in an Arab nation. But this is Brussels, the capital of Belgium, the headquarters of the European Union. Molenbeek Saint-Jean, a province or municipality of the capital with about 100,000 residents and an area of 5.9 sq km, has earned the notorious epithet of “terrorist hub” as three of the attackers who killed 130 people in Paris a month ago came from here.
Several other terrorist attacks have been traced to this area, including the one in Madrid, Spain, where bombs in a train killed 181 commuters. The bombs were planted by Al Qaeda-inspired militants who had lived in Molenbeek. Several smaller attacks were found to be led by persons who lived in Molenbeek. So why has the province produced more than its fair share of jihadists? “The youth in the area do not have much work and some of them may seem to be attracted to jihadist thinking,” Johan de Becker, police chief of Brussels West, told IANS. The police chief said that the Paris attack had made them realize the need for greater police presence, especially those with an Arabic background. Becker said that police recruitment at present is done nationally and Arab-origin

people in Molenbeek find it difficult to join, especially since education levels among them are low. “We are asking that recruitment rules be changed and more money allocated for police,” he said. Molenbeek has almost 40 per cent population of Moroccan origin. In the last two decades, the
economy of the area turned for the worst and there have hardly been any employment opportunities. “For several years, the political leaders ignored the need for measures to prevent jihadist thinking from taking hold. We did not give enough support to Muslims from Morocco which I think is impor-
tant,” said Francoise Schepmans, Mayor of Molenbeek. Some of the informal mosques, in residential areas, may be centers of jihadism, she said, although the main mosques — there are 25 of them — are not a problem. But she objects to the whole of Molenbeek being called a “terrorist hub”.

Led by the National Sikh Campaign, 15 organizations have launched a joint effort to encourage interfaith dialogue
W
ith hate crimes against Muslims and Sikhs rising in the wake of the terrorist attacks in Paris and California, 15 diverse civil rights and faith-based organizations, led by the National Sikh Campaign (NSC), have joined up to address hateful rhetoric against religious minorities. The coalition aims to encourage interfaith dialogue to address increased discrimination, mistrust, and violence, particularly against Sikh and Muslim Americans. Members of the group joined a White House event this week aimed at reinvigorating American traditions of inclusion, freedom and interfaith cooperation. “The rise in anti-Muslim sentiment has created a dangerous environment for all faiths - not just Muslims or Sikhs,” said Rana Singh Sodhi, brother of Balbir Singh Sodhi, the first Sikh man killed after
Boy’s bomb scare joke lands him in trouble NEW YORK: A 12-year-old Sikh boy was kept behind the bars for three days for allegedly joking to a classmate that he has a bomb in his backpack, the boy’s cousin wrote in a Facebook post.
“A bully in class thought it would be funny to accuse him (Armaan Singh Sarai) of having a bomb, and so the principal, without any questioning, interrogation, or notification to his parents, called the police,” Sarai’s cousin Ginee Haer wrote in the post. “They kept him behind bars for three consecutive days, before finally releasing him on December 15th,” Haer wrote in the Faecbook post that has been shared by thousands of people. “Worried and frightened at home, his family was concerned as to why he had not reached home right after school. They started calling every police department in the area, only to find out he was sent to a Juvenile facility,” she added.
9/11. “Truthfully, religious liberty and co-existence is at risk, and this interfaith effort to address these issues is more critical now than ever before,” he said. The coalition, rooted in the belief that America’s strength comes from its diverse heritage, also launched an innovative project called “Know Your Neighbor” calling on all Amer-
icans to share their own beliefs as well as understand and respect those of others. “We are a nation of Christians, Muslims, Jews, Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, non-religious people, and more. We live and work together and we need to have faith in each other,” said NSC executive director Gurwin Singh Ahuja, who has designed the project. Developed after extensive research, including NSC’s “Sikhs in the United States” report, Know Your Neighbor seeks to protect and strengthen the fabric of one of the most religiously diverse countries in the world. “Americans know that minority religions, such as Sikhism, Islam, and Hinduism, exist in the United States yet they don’t realize that they are their neighbors, friends and coworkers,” said Rajwant Singh, senior advisor to the NSC. “If we can make that realization for those who are unaware, we are bridging a major gap towards tolerance and acceptance.”

Modi to inaugurate Afghan senate house Built by India as a mark of friendship, the parliament building has elements of Mughal and modern architecture and will have Asia’s largest dome as its key feature IANS, KABUL
‘IS journalist arrested in Afghanistan’
I
ndia’s symbolic gift for democracy in Afghanistan - its new parliament building - is almost complete with plans in the works for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit Kabul in the near future for the official inauguration, local media reported on Sunday. The project was initiated by the Indian government in 2007 as a mark of friendship and cooperation to help rebuild war-torn Afghanistan, and is set for completion on December 31. The new parliament building was due to have been completed in November 2011 and has missed at least three completion deadlines over the last four years. In the latest review, conducted by India’s Secretary of Urban Development Madhusudan Prasad and the Central Public Works Department,

Two US bombers flew into the airspace near an island and reef of the Nansha Islands early on December 10. Pentagon said the flight might have strayed off course due to weather and an investigation had been launched.
British PM orders review into use of guns by police LONDON: British Prime Minister David Cameron has ordered a review into the use of guns by police in England and Wales folDavid Cameron lowing the deadly November 13 terror attacks. The review will examine whether the law gives enough support to officers making a “split-second” decision to shoot, BBC reported. It follows concerns from senior police that firearms officers do not have the necessary legal or political backing to work with confidence.

The parliament building has elements of Mughal and modern architecture and will have Asia’s largest dome as its key feature. It is situated between historic landmarks King’s Palace and the
Queen’s Palace — which bear the marks of the war and conflict. The building will house the Wolesi Jirga (Lower House) with a seating capacity of 294, a 190-seat Meshrano Jirga (Upper House), entrance lobby, offices, conference rooms, dining halls and a press room, among others.
KABUL: Amid a growing outcry over the recent emergence in Kabul of an Islamic State radio station, the Afghan spy agency arrested a journalist who allegedly worked for the station. This comes after reports emerged that IS launched a radio station that broadcasts through Jalalabad and districts in the Nangarhar province in a bid to promote the group and recruit new fighters. “We are seriously working with security institutions, because it is a major concern to us. National Directorate of Security has already arrested one of the journalists affiliated to Islamic State radio,” Yasin Samim, spokesman for the ministry of communication and information technology was quoted by TOLONews as saying. “The radio operates through

Since its emergence, IS has been extremely active on social media in its bid to recruit militants. epal’s Deputy Prime Minister Kamal Thapa is travelling to China to seek help on importing fuel and expanding road connectivity and transit facilities. The move comes amid persisting strains in Nepal-India relations following the virtual closure of border points on their frontier, leading to major shortages in the nation. With protests triggered by Nepal’s new constitution leading to the crisis, Nepal is facing shortages of essential commodities like food, fuel and medicines. Announcing the six-day official visit to China, the foreign affairs ministry said Thapa will meet his Chinese counterpart Yang Yi and other senior leaders in China. Officials privy to the visit said Nepal was
preparing to sign a trade and transit treaty with China, similar to one that exists with India. If Beijing consents, Nepal will have access to Chinese ports for export and import to a third coun-
try. The nearest Chinese port from Nepal is Shanghai. If the two neighbors sign the pact, Nepal’s dependency on India for trade with the rest of the world will end.

We call on you to extend this principle to appoint-

ments to the Senate of Canada,” Xinhua cited the letter as saying. Signers of the letter included former prime minister Kim Campbell, former deputy prime minister Sheila Copps and activists. When Prime Minister Trudeau was sworn in on November 4, he appointed 15 women to his 30minister cabinet. In Canadian politics, the Governor General of Canada holds the power to make senatorial appointments on the advice of the prime minister. The seats in the Senate are
assigned on a regional basis, with each of the four major regions receiving 24 seats and the remainder of the available seats being assigned to smaller regions. Senators hold their seats to the age of 70. The federal government announced earlier this month that it would fill in vacancies of the Senate by applying a new process, stating in a document issued that “nominees will be considered with a view to achieving gender balance in the Senate,” yet stopping short of a pledge as for how to achieve gender equality.

TN seeks Rs.259 billion post-flood IANS, CHENNAI
T HYDERABAD: A techie, who was depressed after failing to clear the civil services exams, went on a stabbing spree on December 22 injuring 24 people, before police shot him down. The incident took place in Karimnagar town of Telangana. According to police, 25-year-old Balvinder Singh attacked his parents with a sword following an argument at home. Singh, who works for a software firm in Bengaluru, then stepped out to attack passers-by, leading to panic among people. Some pedestrians, two bikers and an auto-rickshaw driver were injured. A constable who tried to snatch the sword from the man sustained injuries. As the situation slipped out of control, circle inspector Vijay Sarathi opened fire to disarm the man. A critically injured Singh was taken to a hospital, where he died. According to family members, Singh was a meritorious student. After engineering in electronics, he got a job in Bengaluru and was earning Rs.1.8 million a year. Singh had a dream of passing the civil services exam, but failed to qualify and as a result went into depression. The man apparently lost his mental balance.
amil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa on December 22 told Prime Minister Narendra Modi that her state requires Rs.259.12 billion for flood relief measures. In a letter to Modi, the text of which was released to the media here, Jayalaltihaa demanded an immediate release of Rs.20 billion and said the supplementary memorandum reflects the damage caused during the fourth spell of rainfall and the consequent floods in December’s first week. “Tamil Nadu immediately needs an additional sum of Rs.174.31 billion for temporary and permanent restoration,” Jayalalithaa said. Including the earlier request of
Rs.84.81 billion towards relief and restoration of flood-affected areas, the total amount of central funds the state needs was around Rs.259 billion. Stressing the state government’s commitment to rebuilding the
infrastructure and reducing people’s distress, Jayalalithaa said the costs were very huge and difficult for the state government to meet, after the loss of tax revenue due to the recommendations of the 14th Finance Commission.
da when a woman lodged a police complaint that a moneylender sexually exploited her by offering Rs.1 million as loan. She also claimed that the accused was also forcing her to meet the demand of his henchmen. He said the government had already announced judicial probe into the call money scam. The chief minister said following this case, many people came forward to lodge complaints against moneylenders charging high interest. He said the statewide drive by police led to arrest of 188 people. He said a bill would be passed during the current session to curb the activities of private financiers exploiting the people. There was huge protest from YSR Congress when Naidu said 65 of those arrested belong to the opposition party and only 20 were from TDP.
President to attend KCR’s Yagam HYDERABAD: President Pranab Mukherjee will attend the Ayutha Chandi Maha Yagam being organized by Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Pranab Mukherjee Rao near Hyderabad on December 27. The president, who is arriving here on December 18 for a 14-day southern sojourn, will attend the Purnahuthi of the Ayutha Chandi Maha Yagam at the chief minister’s farmhouse in Erravelli village in Medak district. The five-day ritual for ‘lok kalyanam’ (universal prosperity) and ‘vishwa shanthi’ (universal peace) will be held from December 23.
Kerala hands over Vizhinjam to Adani Ports IANS, THIRUVANATHAPURAM
E
nding all speculation, the Kerala government on December 21 said it had handed over to Adani Parts the letter awarding it the contract for building the proposed Vizhinjam port. This port project has been in the drawing boards of successive government for the past quarter of a century and last month the Oomen Chandy government decided to award the project to Adani Ports and announced the
letter would be given shortly. But when even after the model code of election for a by-election ended and the letter was not forthcoming, a section of the media took up the issue with some stories claiming the delay came as the Congress high command was not in favor of giving the project to Adani, known to be close to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Chief Minister Chandy on December 21 said that the letter of award has been handed over to Adani Ports. The Rs.40 billion first phase of
the port is to come up near the famed tourist destination Kovalam and is expected to be completed in three phases, with the first phase being ready by 2019. Adani Ports was the lone bidder
and had sought Rs.16.35 billion as grant for the project. The state government said the work for the project will begin on November 1, the day the state was formed way back in 1956.

Kejriwal gets Bedi’s backing against DDCA NEW DELHI: Lashing out at the alleged financial irregularities involving the DDCA, former Indian captain Bishan Singh Bedi came out in support of the Delhi government’s recent action to probe the affairs of the Delhi’s cricket governing body. Recently, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal demanded Finance Minister Arun Jaitley’s resignation for alleged corruption during his 13-year reign as the president of the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA). The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader also said that Jaitley must resign or be sacked in view of the “very serious allegations” against him. “I am grateful to Arvind Kejriwal who is the first CM of Delhi who has taken a step to look into corruption of DDCA. I am thankful to him. Kejriwal has the guts to take on these challenges,” Bedi was quoted as saying by the ABP news channel. Bedi also demanded that the DDCA should be registered under the society act instead of the existing company laws. “DDCA is a company and companies are formed to make business and in many ways, DDCA is run like a business. For me, we are focused more on the selection process of various teams, nepotism in appointing managers and officials,” he added. The former cricketer alleged that the DDCA had given contracts to fake companies, paying them crores of rupees in cash and had fudged auditing. Addressing media persons here,
Azad displayed a video produced by WikiLeaks4India which claimed that the DDCA had given out contracts to various companies but the addresses given for these were found to be false. It also alleged that the DDCA hired office and other equipment at vastly inflated prices, including hiring of laptops at Rs.16,000 per day and printers at Rs.3,000 per day. “I just want to expose corruption, the accounts of it will be explained later. “Was a nightmare to speak to some others at DDCA but @ arunjaitley ji was always available for players in case of any difficulty at
any time,” Sehwag wrote on his official Twitter account. “In my time with DDCA if I ever came to know of any ‘surprising’ selection of a player, all I needed to do was to inform @arunjaitley,” he added. “And @arunjaitley Ji would immediately ensure correction and justice for the deserving players at #DDCA.” The Delhi government has received support from former India captain Bishen Singh Bedi, but Gambhir asserted that Jaitley had done a lot to improve the game in the capital during his tenure which ended in 2013.

We need to make more films for kids: Suriya
If we want our children to dissociate themselves from the virtual world, we need more children’s films, says the actor, a concerned father of two kids
in the virtual world, and this is not healthy. “If we want our children to dissociate themselves from the virtual world, then we need more chil-
dren’s films. While there have been films such as ‘Kaaka Muttai’ and ‘Thanga Meengal’, they’re rarely made,” he added. With his latest Tamil outing “Pasanga 2”, which comes from his home banner 2D Entertainment, Suriya hopes to bring as many children as possible to the cinemas this Thursday and beyond. The film deals with children suffering from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and the relationship they share with their parents. “We’ve tried to show an alternate way of looking at this issue. A lot of people are under the assumption that this film is only for children, but it’s equally important for parents, too,” he said.

“The story is about how the loss of one person becomes the gain of the other,” he said, and added everything in the film, including the action, was handled realistically.

ctor-producer Suriya, who feels children today live in a virtual world, believes the only way to give them a slice of reality is through the kind of cinema that reflects their own lifestyle and makes them think. “Our regular audience is between the age group of 18-30. Children rarely come to theatre nowadays. I don’t understand why we don’t have enough children’s films and don’t know who needs to be blamed for this,” Suriya told IANS. A father of two, Suriya says his own children can’t watch his films. “I can’t show them my films. Other
than animation movies, they don’t watch anything else. They hardly go out and play. Everything they’re supposed to experience is unfortunately

It was extremely tough to manage the crowd, but we didn’t
mind it because we wanted everything to be realistic,” Subramaniam told IANS. The film features Sri, Harish Kalyan, Srushti Dange and Chandini T in important roles. “Most of the scenes on the streets were shot with real people. Although the whole experience was taxing, especially running around with cameras for the perfect shot, we’re happy that the output has come out very well,” he said. How did he succeed shooting on

The source added that the song may also feature Balakrishna, albeit briefly. “He may not appear throughout the song but at an important juncture,” he said. Directed by Sriwass, the film features Anjali and Sonal Chauhan in the lead roles.
Shanvi in Kannada remake of ‘Bhale Bhale Magadivoy’ CHENNAI: Actress Shanvi Srivastava will reprise Lavanya Tripathi’s role in the yet-untitled Kannada remake of Telugu blockbuster Bhale Bhale Magadivoy. The remake, to be jointly produced by Rockline Venkatesh and Allu Aravind, will be directed by Ramesh Aravind and will feature Ganesh in the lead. “This will be my next project in Kannada. I’m really excited about it,” Shanvi, who awaits the release of
Kannada film Masterpiece, said. Masterpiece, which also stars Yash, is releasing in cinemas this week. “It’s a film that has everything — action, comedy, romance and a little bit of patriotism, too,” said Shanvi, who plays a modern girl in the film. She’s extremely confident about the film and added that she thoroughly enjoyed working with Yash. Talking about her role, she said: “I’ve never played a role where there’s more scope for comedy and entertainment more than romance. I even got to do some stunts, like jump from the second floor of a building using ropes. I didn’t use a body double and the experience was amazing.” Shanvi will next work on a trilingual film with former Indian seamer S. Sreesanth.

D
ebutant director Sriram Adittya says he bonded like a brother with actor Sudheer Babu, who plays the lead in the forthcoming Telugu entertainer Bhale Manchi Roju. “I’d imagined Sudheer as a very strict and serious person. Therefore, I assumed it won’t be easy to get along with him. Nevertheless, we hit it off quite well and bonded like brothers. It was so much fun working with him,” Adittya told IANS. On working with Sudheer, the 26-year-old director, who comes from an engineering background, said it was delightful. “I usually take several takes before locking a shot. One of the scenes with Sudheer actually took us 14

takes, not because he wasn’t getting it right but I wanted it to be perfect,” said Adittya, adding that Sudheer was extremely patient through-
out the course of the shoot. He also said that the audiences will get to see Sudheer in a role sans heroism. “This story doesn’t require the hero to be all macho. The focus is on the character he plays. This is a story of 12 important characters and I’ve given all my actors equal screen space.” Unable to categorize the film in any particular genre, Adittya says the film’s story unfolds in a day. “It’s a story that takes place within a span of 12 hours -- from morning to evening. It has shades of crime and comedy. It’s a screenplay-based film that will be very different from the regular crop of films,” he said. Before wielding the megaphone, Adittya was working with companies such as Google and Facebook.

‘Dilwale’ crosses Rs.1 bn mark MUMBAI: Dilwale remains ahead of Bajirao Mastani in the box office race. While the Shah Rukh Khan starrer crossed the Rs.1 billion mark worldwide in its opening weekend, the historical drama, featuring Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone, minted Rs.468 million in India in three days. Dilwale, Rohit Shetty’s romantic action-comedy, has collected Rs.1.21 billion in its opening weekend worldwide. Its India business stands at Rs.651 million, and it made $8.5 million from the overseas
market. Both the films released on December 18. Starring Shah Rukh, Kajol, Varun Dhawan and Kriti Sanon in pivotal roles, “Dilwale” is receiving a hearty response abroad, says trade analyst Komal Nahta. “Dilwale Overseas: Gulf - biggest ever opening for a Bollywood film, and the number one film this weekend,” Nahta posted on Twitter.
I’m endorsing being your fittest self: Parineeti MUMBAI: Parineeti Chopra has been in the news for having lost oodles of weight, but the actress says she is not in any Parineeti Chopra way endorsing the idea of being thin. Instead, she feels that her trim figure is about endorsing fitness.
Ever since she stepped into the film industry, Parineeti was targeted for having a fuller figure. Did she decide to lose weight because of the brickbats? “That (criticism) is absolutely bizarre. Being thin is a different thing, I wanted to have better stamina and control over my body,” the actress said here on the red carpet of the Stardust Awards.

‘Bajirao Mastani’ - A visually captivating masterpiece Film: Bajirao Mastani; Director: Sanjay Leela Bhansali; Cast: Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone, Priyanka Chopra, Tanvi Azmi, Mahesh Manjrekar and Milind Soman; Rating: ****
S
anjay Leela Bhansali’s Bajirao Mastani, based on the novel Rau authored by N.S. Inamdar, is a fictionalized romance drama that encapsulates the 20 year reign of the Maratha warrior Bajirao and his relationship with his second wife Mastani. The film begins with Bajirao’s appointment as Peshwa in the court of Chhattrapati Shahu in Satara. The narration thereafter leads you into his expeditions, his encounter with Mastani and their subsequent, intense romance. Mounted on a magnificent scale with well-etched characters, resplendent sets and period costumes, the director, intricately and flawlessly, transports you to the era of the Peshwas, circa 1720-1740. What makes the film stand out is Bhansali’s direction. He astutely
manages to guide his team to deliver the best. Be it in performances, music, visuals or action, his inimitable stamp is written over every frame of the film.
Prakash Kapadia’s screenplay water-tight and engaging, keepin you riveted to the screen for over hours. His dialogues are colloquia yet, power-packed. There is no iot of excess, and embellished with th right amount of Marathi word these sharp and taut dialogues ar full of wit, messages and equal hard-hitting. The performances by the charac ters are captivating. Bajirao Mastan is Ranveer Singh’s canvas. With h well-chiselled physique, bald pat with a single lock of hair, he slip into Bajirao’s hide perfectly. Deepika Padukone as the defian and confident warrior Mastan madly in love with Bajirao, is effor lessly convincing. The action sequences by Shyam Kaushal are easily one of the high lights of the film. — Troy Ribeir

This was before Ranveer shaved clean his upper lip. “I’m feeling very weird... some of you have moustaches, so you can understand how strange it feels,” Ranveer later told reporters about his new look. “I had kept the Bajirao look for 14 months, the choti (ponytail) has also been cut off and the moustache that I had grown for six to eight months is also off. Modi, Sharif to continue peace process after surprise Lahore meet
BY A STAFF WRITER EW DELHI- Prime Minister Narendra Modi returned to New Delhi on Friday from Kabul with a dramatic surprise stopover in Lahore where he and his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif vowed to pursue the derailed bilateral peace process. During the stop over at Lahore, Modi and Sharif spent some 90 minutes at Sharif ’s ancestral residence in Raiwind town, about 40 km from Lahore, and decided to continue the suspended dialogue between the two countries after months of border tension. It was a telephone call from Modi from Kabul greeting Sharif on his birthday which triggered the dramatic journey -- his first to Pakistan and the first by any Indian prime minister in 11 years. Sharif had attended Modi’s oath taking in New Delhi in May 2014. A Pakistani official said Modi also blessed the granddaughter of Sharif on her wedding. “Modi had no clue about the wedding,” he said. The Indian leader, who sipped Kashmiri tea while meeting Sharif, also met the Pakistani leader’s mother. Modi reportedly told Sharif that it was important for the leadership of the two countries to understand each other’s position. The Pakistani media said the two leaders had decided to take forward their bilateral relations for the benefit of South Asia. Modi and Sharif agreed to promote people-to-people contacts and confidence building measures. Sharif and his brother and Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif were among
N
the VIPs who received Modi at the Allama Iqbal International Airport as Modi landed in an Indian Air Force plane. The two leaders then took a helicopter to Raiwind. Geo TV reported that the visit “was not that surprising” as the Lahore Air Traffic Control had been told about it on Thursday. But few in India and Pakistan knew about the programme, which came at a time when bilateral relations have shown definite improvement after months of tension and border clashes. The Pakistan Air Force presented a guard of honour for Modi. The Pakistan government welcomed the development with Foreign Secretary Aizaz Chaudhry describing it as a goodwill
gesture on the part of the Indian prime minister. Modi and Sharif had fleetingly met at the Paris Climate Summit on November 30, preparing the atmosphere for a resumption of the stalled bilateral dialogue. Indian National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, who accompanied Modi to Lahore, met his Pakistani counterpart in Bangkok earlier this month. This was followed by External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj’s visit to Islamabad. The two foreign secretaries are set to meet in January, also in the Pakistani capital. Hours before he left Kabul for Lahore, Modi addressed the Afghan parliament and blasted Pakistan - but without naming

Modi reached Kabul early on Friday after a two-day visit to Russia. In an obvious reference to Pakistan, Modi said there were “some who did not want us to be here”. “There were those who saw sinister designs in our presence here. There are others who were uneasy at the strength of our partnership. Some even tried to discourage us.” At the same time, Modi said Pakistan must act like a bridge between South Asia and Afghanistan. “All of us in the region - India, Pakistan, Iran and others - must unite, in trust and cooperation, behind this common purpose and in recognition of our common destiny.” Ahead of his address, he and Afghan President Ashraf Ghani jointly inaugurated Afghanistan’s new parliament building which was constructed with Indian assistance of $90 million. After arriving in Kabul from Moscow early Friday morning, Modi and Ghani held delegation-level talks over breakfast. The Indian prime minister also met Afghanistan’s Chief Executive Officer Abdullah Abdullah and former president Hamid Karzai. Modi had left on Wednesday for a two-day visit to Russia for the annual summit-level meeting during which the two countries signed 16 agreements, including those related to defence and nuclear production.

Three prominent Indian Americans charged in hotel tax fraud BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL — Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan today announced charges against three Chicago area hotel owners in a sweep to crack down on violations of the Hotel Operators’ Occupation Tax Act (HOOT). The individuals are accused of defrauding the state out of more than $470,000 from eight hotels in the Chicago area. Shashank Bhatt, 66, of Oak Brook and Kishore Chugh, 63, of Burr Ridge were charged with filing a fraudulent HOOT return and wire fraud, Class 3 felonies punishable by up to two to five years in prison. Bhatt and Chugh are accused of conspiring to defraud the state by underreporting approximately $3.5 million revenue. As the owners and operators of a number of hotels in and around Chicago – the D-Lux Budget Motel in Alsip, the Miami Inn & Suites in Oak Lawn, the Palos Motel in Worth, the Presidential Inn in Matteson, the Presidential Motel in Lyons, and the Saratoga Motel in Chicago – Bhatt and Chugh allegedly defrauded the state out of $354,076.84 in tax revenue. Ms Madigan also announced Jagdishchandra Parikh, 59, of DeKalb was charged with failing to file HOOT returns, a Class 3 felony punishable by two to five years in prison. Parikh allegedly failed to disclose more than $2 million in sales generated by two Baymont Inn & Suites hotels located in DeKalb and Ogle counties, resulting in a state tax revenue loss of

approximately $120,000. Ms Madigan said that her office will pursue individuals who defraud the state by violating tax laws and keep money that is owed to the state,” said Madigan. Bhatt and Chugh posted bond, which was set at $100,000 each, and their next court date is Jan. 11. Parikh’s next court appearance will be Jan. 12. “Anytime allegations of tax fraud are brought to our attention, it is important that we examine their validity and act accordingly,” said Connie Beard, Illinois Department of Revenue
(IDOR) Director. “Individuals who defraud our state’s tax system and unfairly disadvantage businesses that play by the rules and pay their fair share, must be held accountable.” The cases were investigated by IDOR’s Criminal Investigations Division. Assistant Attorneys General Christina Chojnacki and Mary Claire Lusher are handling the cases for Madigan’s Special Prosecutions Bureau. The readers are reminded that the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
Illegal immigrants held from fake govt SUV BY A STAFF WRITER AREDO, TX -- A dozen smuggled immigrants have been detained after being crammed into a fake Border Patrol SUV that was stopped by a real officer in Texas. Border Patrol officials say they are investigating who made a white Chevy Tahoe look like a Border Patrol vehicle. A Border Patrol agent from the Laredo
L
sector last week noticed something was not quite right about what appeared to be a government SUV.
The SUV had the words “Border Patrol” and “US Customs and Border Protection” on the sides, an official-looking insignia and a green stripe. The agent followed the vehicle north on Interstate 35 before stopping the truck, finding 12 passengers inside. A Border Patrol statement says the driver was also arrested in the human smuggling investigation.

Muslim group’s office receives hate mail
BY A STAFF WRITER ASHINGTON, DC -- The office of the Council on AmericanIslamic Relations (CAIR), a Muslim civil rights group, received an envelope containing a letter that read, “Die a painful death, Muslims,” and a white powder. Said CAIR staff attorney Maha Sayed: “Our fear is at a pretty high level at this time, given the anti-Muslim rhetoric going on”. Sayed said on a posting on the group’s Facebook page that the organization received hate messages daily. “It’s frightening to experience the hate manifest itself to such a real level. This will not deter us from continuing to protect the civil rights and liberties of all Americans,” the post said. About three employees came into contact with the powder and were quarantined in the building while the police and firemen arrived on the scene to investigate, said Ibrahim Hooper, a CAIR spokesperson, adding that the rest of the office staff waited outside on the sidewalk after the building was evacuated.

Gurdwara vandalized in CA after shootings BY A STAFF WRITER UENA PARK, CA -- In a possible case of mistaken identity, a Sikh temple in Orange County, Calif., was vandalized by someone who apparently thought it was a Muslim house of worship. The Sikh Coalition said a graffiti vandal hit the temple in Buena Park, Calif., soon after last week’s San Bernardino shootings by a Pakistani American couple. The coalition added that a member’s truck in a parking lot also was targeted by someone who misspelled the word ‘Islam’ and made an obscene reference to ISIS. The vandalism, which included hateful graffiti with the phrase, ‘F**k ISIS’, along with gang references, was reported to the police. “We believe that the Gurdwara Singh Sabha was vandalized, because it is a Sikh house of worship,” said the Sikh Coalition’s senior staff attorney, Gurjot Kaur, an Indian American of the Sikh faith. “We call on local and federal agencies to investigate this vandalism as a hate crime and request increased law enforcement security at the gurdwara immediately. Gang graffiti can be a precursor for additional targeted violence”, noted the statement by the Coalition. The Sikh Coalition says it has repeatedly been faced with hate crimes and
B
discrimination since the 9/11 attack. Sikh men wear a turban and beard and often become a target of hate due to ignorance about Sikh religion and its origin in the US. According to the Coalition, the member who owned the truck was visiting from outof-state (possibly Texas) and left the area shortly after the incident. The Buena Park Police Department is investigating the incident and has been in touch with the officials of the Sikh congregation, according to Washingtonbased Sikh Council on Religion and Education. Located prominently on the main road in the city, the Sikh gurdwara is attended by over 800 community members on a weekly basis.
Pakistani diplomat’s son held: teen rape
BY A STAFF WRITER HISPER, NY -- The son of a Pakistani diplomat was arrested for having sex with a 13-year-old Bronx girl he met through a social media app called Whisper. The police said Mehmood Ur Rehman Rahimoon, 20, was charged with rape because the girl is too young to consent under state law. He was also charged with acting in a manner injurious to a child less than 17 and with sex abuse. Rahimoon, who is nicknamed Rey and lives in Scarsdale, met the teen in October on Whisper, a social media phone app where users can post messages anonymously. For the next three weeks, they got in
W
touch using Whisper and other apps, and then met in person three times. The pair got physical with each other but did not have sex until their third meeting on December 1when they got a room at the Riveroad Motor Inn on Webster Ave. During the encounter, the teen’s friend waited in the bathroom.
UPCOMING
At the same time, the friend’s father was waiting at her school to pick up her and the victim. The worried father called his daughter, who lied to him, saying he and the victim were working out in a park with their running club. Rahimoon then took the phone and told the father the teens would be back at school shortly. That night, the friend confessed to her father, who contacted the police the next day. As part of the police investigation, detectives set up a controlled meeting in upper Manhattan on the night of December 9 and Rahimoon was arrested. He made statements incriminating himself and does not have diplomatic immunity.

NYC Muslim store owner is attacked
Sarker Haque
BY A STAFF WRITER UEENS, NY A Muslim store owner was attacked in Queens in what the police are investigating as a bias crime. A man walked into the Fatima Food Mart on 21st Avenue in Astoria on December 5 and yelled that he wanted to “kill Muslims,” then repeatedly punched the owner, the police said. According to the owner, Sarker Haque, who on December 9 still had bruises on his face from the attack, his attacker walked in, looked over the newspapers and held one up. On the cover was the attack in San Bernardino. “He said, ‘Is everything free in this store?’ I said, ‘What?’” recounted Haque. “Then he don’t say nothing, he just walk around all the way back there.” The man’s behavior turned erratic as he walked around the store asking for free items. He then started attacking Haque, punching him and throwing him to the ground behind the counter, Haque said. “He punched me and I fell down, and then he said, ‘I’m gonna kill Muslims,” said Haque. A customer walked in soon after and helped to restrain the suspect, who was later arrested and charged with assault, the police said. The attack is being investigated as a hate crime.

California mosque is ‘firebombed’
BY A STAFF WRITER OS ANGELES, CA -Authorities were investigating a case of suspected arson after a blaze broke out at a California mosque on December 11, officials said, a week after a Muslim couple shot dead 14 people in the US state. Officials at the mosque said someone “fire-bombed” the building, and worshippers expressed concerns over the incident. Last year, someone fired a shot at the same mosque but no one was injured. Firefighters rushed to the Islamic Society of Palm Springs, in the town of Coachella, shortly after smoke and flames were seen coming out of the building at around noon, according to a spokeswoman for the Riverside County Fire Department. No injuries were reported and firefighters managed to extinguish the fire within a half hour. Laura Eimiller, a spokeswoman for the FBI’s Los Angeles office, said federal investigators were assisting the local police in the probe. The incident comes nine days after a Muslim couple in San Bernardino,

Mom, daughter are cooking champs BY A STAFF WRITER AWRENCE, KS -- An Indian American mother-daughter team from Lawrence, Kan., was among five grand prize winners of Uncle Ben’s “Ben’s Beginners Cooking Contest.” The rice brand has named the winners of the fourth annual contest, which sought children from kindergarten through eighth grade to make healthier, lifelong meal choices by inspiring parents and kids to cook together at an earlier age. “Learning to cook at a young age is as essential as learning to read and write,” said Lara McCauley, vice president of corporate affairs at Mars Food North America, the parent company of the Uncle Ben’s brand. “Our Ben’s Beginners movement continues to bring families together and this year’s winners demonstrate the positive power of the kitchen and dinner table for both the family and the community.” Jasmy Mavilla, 9, and her mother Sowjanya Seetala cooked together and submitted a video of the duo preparing a shrimp masala rice dish. Mavilla was among 25 finalists selected from hundreds of entrants nationwide who submitted videos of how they prepared rice dishes with their families. For being selected a grand prize winner, Mavilla was awarded with a $30,000 school cafeteria makeover, a $15,000 cash prize for her family and a celebration at her school, Raintree Montessori School. “Jasmy has had a passion for cooking ever since she was little and the recipe she created was inspired by the spices and flavors of India, where both her father and I grew up,” said Seetala in a statement. “All of the vegetables in her recipe come from our garden as Jasmy aims to encourage not only our family but others to make healthy, fresh meals at home.”

BY A STAFF WRITER ASHINGON, DC -- With the US and other countries on high alert for Islamic State (IS) attacks, American authorities are holding out a warning that the terror group’s followers may have infiltrated American borders with authentic-looking passports the IS has printed with its own machines. A 17-page Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Intelligence Report issued to law enforcement last week says IS has been able to print legitimate-looking Syrian passports since taking over the city of Deir ez-Zour, home to a passport office with “boxes of blank passports” and a passport printing machine. Another passport office was located in Raqqa, Syria, which has long been IS’s de facto capital. “Since more than 17 months have passed since Raqqa and Deir ez-Zour fell to IS, it is possible that individuals from Syria with passports ‘issued’ in these IS-controlled cities or who had passport blanks, may have traveled to the US,” the report says.
W about an hour from Palm Springs, killed 14 people and injured 22 in an assault that is being investigated by the FBI as a terror attack. The rampage has raised fears of a backlash against the Muslim community in the United States, especially in the wake of anti-Muslim rhetoric by Republican White House hopeful Donald Trump. Trump has called for a ban on Muslims
entering the United States and promoted the idea of requiring all Muslims in the country to register in a special database. Several worshippers gathered outside the mosque in Coachella expressed fear. “If something bad happens somewhere, they blame Islam,” said Kassim Al-Mushr. “But Islam did not do that,” he added, referring to the San Bernardino massacre.
Cops open fire on FL knife-wielding robber BY A STAFF WRITER ALM BEACH, FL – Palm Beach County Sheriff ’s Deputy Adnan Raja is on paid leave after shooting longtime felon Olie James Goad following his alleged two-day robbery spree at a pizza shop, grocery store and bank. The older brother of former Florida cop Nouman Raja--who was fired after killing a black musician--was among the five deputies involved in the shooting of a knife-wielding robber. The deputies opened fire on Goad, 48, after he fled in a stolen vehicle at around 2 am on December 13and critically wounded the suspect who allegedly threatened the officers with a hunting knife. At least two of the deputies’ bullets struck Goad, authorities said. Raja joined the Palm Beach County agency in April 2014, having previously been a detective for the Riviera Beach Police Department.

his winter, give your blazers and jackets a break and turn to chic sweaters to look your stylish best. Play up with prints, or stay safe with solid colors, suggests the design team of an apparel brand for men. The design team at John Players, which offers a fashion wardrobe for men, has shared styling tips for sweaters: Play it up with prints: Overall prints have become the new trend; be it woven or knits. From jungle to tribal and street graffiti, the prints capture all. Wear these trendy prints with contrasting jeans or chinos to complete the look. Solid colors: You can never go wrong with solid colors in your
sweaters. With bright, yellow and lime colors in trend this time, pair them with light colored trousers to complete the look. Experiment with fabrics: Sweaters are not synonymous to woollen apparels. A Cashmere for example is more formal whereas a cotton sweater will give you a comfy feel. You can also try blended synthetic fabrics. Collar your wardrobe: Vnecks give a more brunch kind of look whereas a high collar gives more of a formal look. The deeper the cut of the V, the more effeminate the sweater looks. So opt for a slight cut v-neck and avoid really deep V-necks.
City Palace, Jantar Mantar and Hawa Mahal, before heading to Chokhi Dhani on fourth day. On last day, people are taken to Amer Fort, another Unesco World Heritage Site near Jaipur before returning to Delhi in the evening. All one is required is to board this semi-luxury train and stop worrying about luggage, lodging, meals, transportation to various sites , guides and scheduling. All these things are taken care of by senior IRCTC officials accompanying you. “We intended to provide people a safe, reliable and comfortable journey in the desert circuit. There was no proper train which could cater till Jaisalmer. That’s why we have taken this Desert Circuit train so that we can cover the desert circuit, especially Jaisalmer and Jaipur, and other places,” Jitender Kumar, deputy general manager, IRCTC, told IANS. “The train has first a/c, second a/c and third a/c accommodation. The fare has been kept nominal. In this sector, there are trains for high-end clients and for commoners as well but there was no train for the medium income category people. That’s why we commenced this semi luxury train Desert Circuit,” he added.

he body’s ability to harness heat production by converting white fat cells which store calories into beige (good) fat cells that burn energy, can help fight obesity, a new study reveals. The study suggests natural mechanism in the body, which converts white fat cells into brownish fat cells — known as ‘brite’ or ‘beige’ fat cells — by using heat production and increasing the sympathetic nervous
system’s (SNS) supply of blood vessels to white fat tissue, could be a new and promising approach to fighting obesity. “Perhaps the most important features of white adipose tissue for the conversion of white fat cells to brite/beige fat cells is the density of the SNS nerves being supplied to white adipose tissue, and the fat cell population surrounding this nerve supply having a genetic ability to brown,” said Vitaly Ryu from Georgia State. Our body has two types of fat tis-

Brown adipose tissue, or brown fat, is a dark-colored fat tissue with many blood vessels that burns energy and produces heat. researcher from George Washington University is exploring the possibility of using a new technique for human reproduction and its ethical and practical implications. The method can create the possibility of same-sex couples having children biologically related to both partners. In vitro gametogenesis (IVG) is the method, most advanced in mice, by which gametes are derived from pluripotent stem cells (capable of giving rise to several different cell types) or embryonic stem cells. Research suggests that while not yet advanced enough on human cells, IVG for reproduction may one day be possible in humans. “IVG could play a role in efforts to have a healthy or enhanced child by making prenatal selection much easier and more robust,” said professor Sonia Suter. Several groups of people could potentially use IVG for reproduction like those who cannot con-
ceive for physical reasons, same-sex couples, postmenopausal women or premenarche girls and groups of more than two — multiplex parenting. What distinguishes IVG from current reproductive technologies (ART) is that it would allow such couples to have biologically related children without using gamete donors. For example, a gamete of the opposite sex could be derived from
an individual’s cells. This, in combination with a naturally derived gamete from the other member of the couple, could be used to produce an embryo. Despite concerns over the risks and the fact that the technology is still a way off, professor says that in many ways, IVG may be just another way to have a baby. The paper was published in the Journal of Law and the Biosciences.
tension diseases, understanding how it occurs could be beneficial. Scientists are hopeful that increasing energy expenditure with brown or brite/beige fat cells could be an effective way to fight obesity. It was originally thought that in humans only babies had brown fat, but researchers found small amounts of brown fat in adults in 2009. The researchers investigated how the SNS, a part of the nervous system helps prepare the body to
react to situations of stress or emergency, ‘browns’ white fat tissue cells, transforming them into ‘beige’ fat cells and suggesting a potential mechanism for increasing heat production in the body. “SNS drive increases with cold exposure and food deprivation, so that’s when a breakdown of fats and cell ‘browning’ occurs,” Ryu added. The researchers found the clearest neuroanatomical evidence of the SNS controlling the browning of white fat in mice after cold exposure for 10 days.
14 gram almonds daily can boost your health NEW YORK : Eating a moderate amount of almonds daily can enrich the diets of adults and young children, says a new study. “Almonds are a good source of plant protein — essential fatty acids, vitamin E and magnesium,” said one of the researchers Alyssa Burns from University of Florida in the US. For the 14week study, the scientists gave almonds daily to 29 pairs of parents and children. Most of the adults were mothers with an average age of 35, while their children were between three and six years of age. The children were encouraged to consume 14 grams of almond butter daily and parents were given 14 grams of almonds per day.
An online dietary recall was used to find out what adults had eaten and how much. That way, researchers could measure diet quality. The results indicated that when parents and children were eating almonds, their HEI increased for total protein foods, seafood and plant proteins and fatty acids, while they ate fewer empty calories. For all components, a higher score indicates higher diet quality. When parents and children ate almonds, their HEI score increased from 53.7 to 61.4. Parents and children consumed more vitamin E and magnesium when eating almonds, Burns noted. The study was published in the journal Nutrition Research.
