The small US delegation was headed by Assistant Secretary of State Roberta Jacobson and included officials from the state, commerce and treasury departments. The US in contrast took a more
low-key approach quietly. The US Interests Section in Havana was also upgraded to embassy, but the US flag will not fly at the mission until Kerry visits in August for a ceremonial flag-raising. He will be the first secretary of state to visit the Caribbean island in 70 years. “In accordance with President Barack Obama’s announcement on July 1, effective today the United States and Cuba have re-established diplomatic relations,” the newly opened US embassy said in a statement in Havana. community for Indian-Americans over the age of 55 in the US. After finding that retiring to India
is not practical for many Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) while their kids are working in the US, IndianAmerican businessman Iggy Ignatius decided to build a place for such people who are now out of an active professional life but want to stay close to where their children are. While all meals for a day come at $11.25 a person, meals for a month will cost $225. An MBA from University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign, Ignatius moved to Tavares in Florida with his wife in early 2008 to execute this project. SC rejects plea, Yakub to hang A Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice H.L. Dattu dismisses Memon’s plea challenging an earlier verdict upholding the death sentence; Maharashtra government clears his execution for July 30 QUAID NAJMI, NEW DELHI/MUMBAI

T
he Supreme Court has dismissed a curative plea filed by the March 1993 Mumbai serial blasts convict Yakub A.R. Memon, who will go to the gallows on July 30. An apex court bench comprising Chief Justice H.L. Dattu, Justice T.S. Thakur and Justice A.R. Dave rejected Memon’s plea challenging an earlier verdict upholding the death sentence. As per indications, the Maharashtra government has cleared Memon’s execution for July 30 in the Nagpur Central Jail where he is lodged. Memon — who will become the first and only accused in this 23-year old case to hang — had pleaded that he was a patient of schizophrenia since 1996, had spent nearly 20 years behind bars, and he could not be awarded both life sentence and death sentence for the same offense. He sought a review of the apex court verdict of March 21, 2013 upholding the death penalty for the 13 precision bomb blasts in Mum-

bai which killed 257 people and injured 712. He was among the 100 convicted – of the 123 accused in the case – besides many others listed as ‘wanted absconders’, including his brother Ibrahim alias Tiger Memon and mafia don Dawood Ibrahim Kaskar. Yakub Memon and 11 others were slapped with the death penalty,
20 got life terms and another 68, including Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt, varying terms in jail. Special TADA Court judge P.D. Kode, who conducted the trial and sentenced Memon and 11 others to death, termed the Supreme Court verdict “a solace after 22 years and a victory for those who believe in the rule of the law.
NEW DELHI: The CPI-M on Wednesday urged the government to commute the death sentence of Mumbai blasts accused Yakub Menon, saying he had chosen to surrender and cooperate with Indian authorities. While describing the 1993 blasts as “a heinous terrorist attack” that killed 257 innocents, the CPI-M said that Memon’s death sentence would not serve the interests of justice. “Yakub Memon was part of the conspiracy. But unlike the main actors, he chose to surrender before the Indian authorities and stand trial,” the Communist Party of India-Marxist said in a statement. “He also brought his family back to India to stand trial. “He has provided information to the authorities about the involvement of Pakistani personnel in the attack and the shelter given to the terrorists and is therefore also the only witness available to the government. “Yet, he was singled out for the
death sentence while the main perpetrators are at large,” the statement said. It said it would serve the ends of justice if Yakub Memon’s death penalty was commuted to life sentence. “Even those convicted in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case with the death sentence have had their sentences commuted to life. “The CPI-M has been in principle advocating the abolition of the death penalty. Hence Yakub Memon’s mercy petition, which has been filed, should be accepted,” it said. The CPI-M said it was imperative that the criminals responsible for the deadly Mumbai attack should be brought to book and punished. “There is ample evidence that the main culprits have escaped the law with the help of agencies across the border. Every effort has to be made from all fora available to bring them back to India to stand trial and consequent punishment under law.”
Lok Sabha disrupted over Lalit Modi, Vyapam ‘OROP after modalities are approved, not for paramilitary’ IANS, NEW DELHI
NEW DELHI: Defense Minister Manohar Parrikar on July 21 told parliament that the ‘One Rank One Pension’ (OROP) scheme was discussed with stakeholders, and it will be implemented once its “modalities” are approved. His deputy Rao Inderjit Singh, however, said it will not be for the paramilitary forces. In a written reply to the Rajya Sabha, Parrikar said: “The principle of One Rank One Pension for the armed forces has been accepted by the government.” This came as ex-servicemen sat on a protest at Jantar Mantar for the 38th day on July 21. They are demanding that the government gives them a date for implementation of the
O
OROP. Currently, the pension for retired personnel is based on the Pay Commission recommendations at the time when the personnel retired. This leads to a difference in pension for officers of same rank who retire on different dates. The veterans launched an agitation on June 14.
AAP, LG at loggerheads again NEW DELHI: Delhi’s Aam Aadmi Party government did not take Lt. Governor Najeeb Jung’s approval to appoint the new Delhi Commission for Women chief, an official at LG’s office
here said on July 22. The LG’s office also said Delhi government’s appointment of Swati Maliwal was beyond the latter’s power and authority. “The Delhi government didn’t take the required approval from the LG for appointing the new DCW chief. He (LG) has written a letter to the government calling the appointment ultra vires,” said an official at Jung’s office. Maliwal, wife of AAP leader Naveen Jaihind, took charge as the chairperson of DCW on July 20.
pposition parties led by the Congress created a ruckus in the Lok Sabha on July 22 over the Lalit Modi issue, forcing repeated adjournments of the house. As soon as the house assembled for the day, the opposition shouted slogans against the NDA government on the Lalit Modi issue and the Vyapam recruitment scam in Bharatiya Janata Party-ruled Madhya Pradesh. Leaders of almost all opposition parties, including the Congress and the Left, trooped to the speaker’s podium wearing black bands and carrying placards.
As the speaker tried to conduct the question hour, the members shouted slogans forcing her to adjourn the house till noon. When the house reassembled at noon, the speaker warned members against carrying placards of disciplinary action against them.
As the opposition continued to shout slogans and display placards, she adjourned the house till 2 p.m. Meanwhile, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said a senior Congress leader had pressed her to give diplomatic passport to a scam accused Congress leader. “A senior congress leader was pressing me hard to give diplomatic passport to the coal scam accused Santosh Bagrodia,” Swaraj tweeted, hours before the second day of monsoon session in parliament. She also said she will disclose the name of the Congress leader in parliament.
Delhi rapist admits killing over 30 children IANS, NEW DELHI
I
n revelations that have shocked even the police, serial killer Ravinder Kumar has admitted to raping and murdering more than 30 children in and around Delhi, an officer said. Police have formed a special team to investigate the case. In a confession that has left Deputy Commissioner of Police Vikramjit Singh “deeply shaken”, Kumar confessed to snuffing out the lives of the children — all under 14 years — in and around Delhi since
2008. “I am deeply shaken from inside,” Singh told IANS. Singh said that Kumar, who hails from Kasganj in Uttar Pradesh but lives in Delhi, was taken to Narela, Bawana and Alipur, the places in outer Delhi
identified by him during interrogation. “This helped us to establish the fact (about the number raped and killed),” the officer said. Delhi Police later said they had set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the case to look for more evidence of the horrific crime in the neighboring states of Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. The SIT would investigate cases of missing children in the two states. Until now, police had thought the number of Kumar’s victims would be around 15.

Feudalism at heart
Both Arun Jaitley’s comment that the government cannot ‘retract’ from its decision on the new FTII chairman, and Congress spokesman Salman Khurshid’s claim that his party owed no apology for the Emergency reek of obduracy and feudalism
appointee and two influential ministers. But the threat of rocking the boat is perhaps not the only reason for the government’s hesitancy. Apart from its lack of confidence, there is also the absence of an open mind which does not judge every issue by weighing gains and losses. Such an attitude rules out retreat since survival is all that counts even at the expense of principles although it is no secret that such cynicism does not pay in the long run. As much is evident from the travails of the Congress in the mid1980s when the party might not have squandered its huge majority if it had instituted a credible inquiry into the Bofors howitzer scam.
But it shied away from doing so because the needle of suspicion pointed towards Rajiv Gandhi and a family friend, Ottavio Quottrocchi. There are any number of instances in Indian politics which show that expediency does not pay. The Congress’ crushing defeat last year following allegations of scams is a telling example. So, even as the Modi government seeks to protect the FTII chairman, who is seen as a nonentity in the film world, and the two ministers who are charged with impropriety, the question can be asked whether it is undermining its own cause by putting partisan interests above ethics. All its emphasis on Digital and Skill India will not bear fruit if it avoids the straight and narrow path of political morality if only because its slippage will always give the opposition an effective talking point. The same propensity to evade accountability can be seen in a Congress spokesman’s contention that Indira Gandhi’s election in 1980 absolved her and the Congress of any wrong-doing during the Emergency because when the people “realized that the decision (to impose the Emergency) was right, they voted us back to power”.
according to this report by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defense (2014-15), which said it was “dismayed” at the “snails-pace” of commissioning naval vessels. The Indian Navy has commissioned two submarines and de-commissioned five over the last 15 years, Defense Minister Manohar Parikkar said in a reply in the Rajya Sabha. China launched or commissioned more than 60 naval ships and craft in 2014. A similar number is expected through the end of 2015. The Indian Navy has 141 vessels, including 127 surface ships and 14 submarines. The Chinese Navy has
more than 300 surface combatants, submarines, amphibious ships and missile-armed patrol craft. The Chinese submarine force currently includes 59 conventional or diesel-electric attack submarines and nine nuclear submarines. Of these nine, five are nuclear attack vessels and four are ballistic-missile submarines. Nuclear-powered submarines are of two types: attack submarines (SSN) and fleet ballistic missile submarines (SSBN). Attack submarines are smaller and faster compared to their ballisticmissile counterparts. SSNs are designed to attack enemy ships and submarines using torpedoes and shore facilities with cruise missiles with conventional high-explosive warheads. SSBNs carry ballistic missiles with nuclear warheads. India’s first nuclear submarine was leased in 1988 from the Russian Navy and returned in 1991. The present nuclear submarine, INS Chakra, is considered one of the deadliest non-American attack boats in the world. India has nine Sindhughosh-class or Kilo-class diesel-electric submarines.

here is a striking similarity between Arun Jaitley’s reported comment that the government cannot “retract” from its decision on the new chairman of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) although it did not make the “best of choices”, and Congress spokesman Salman Khurshid’s claim that his party owed no apology for the Emergency. Both the attitudes denote not only obduracy but also a belief that the admission of a mistake will be politically damaging as it will expose the chinks in the armour of the two parties. The Modi government’s insistence on defending what can seem indefensible to most people can be considered strange in view of its majority in the Lok Sabha. But the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) probably believes that a control of the lower house is no guarantee against destabilization, as the Congress’s precipitous fall from 415 seats in 1984 to 197 in 1989 showed. The Modi government, therefore, apparently wants to ward off the challenge it is facing from the students with regard to the FTII

recent visit by an advanced Chinese Yuan-class submarine to Karachi after traversing the Arabian Sea worried Indian authorities concerned about China’s growing undersea-warfare capabilities — more than four times as large as India’s. The submarine, with 65 crew, spent a week in Karachi, refuelling and restocking, before sailing back to China. Yuan-class submarines are diesel-electric, but unlike Indian conventional submarines, which must surface to “breathe” and charge batteries, they are capable of staying submerged for weeks. India now plans to lease a second nuclear attack submarine from Russia and the government has just approved a Rs.900 billion ($14 billion) plan to build six nuclear attack submarines in Vishakapatnam. Murugesan, the vice chief of naval staff, was quoted as saying: “We have started work, but we are still at the pen-to-paper stage.” India is rushing to counter China by building conventional and nuclear submarines with German, French and Russian help. But China’s lead is large and growing and it plans to export its undersea expertise. Particularly disconcerting for India are reports that China plans to sell eight Yuan-class submarines to Pakistan, at a time when Indian submarine forces are, according to this report, in “a state of crisis” and the country jittery about Chinese submarine power. A conventional Chinese submarine berthed at Colombo’s port twice during 2014, sparking concern in India, leading to a Sri Lankan assurance it would not do anything against Indian interests. Al-Qaida key figure killed in US airstrike US State Department says al-Fadhli was killed by a drone or a piloted aircraft on July 8 IANS, WASHINGTON
U
S Department of Defense on July 21 said Muhsin al-Fadhli, a longtime al-Qaida operative and the leader of the Khorasan Group, was killed in the US airstrike in Syria on July 8. Al-Fadhli, who had previously been targeted and believed by some people in the U.S. to have been killed, was traveling in a vehicle near Sarmada, Syria, when he was hit by an air strike, Pentagon spokesman Jeff Davis said in a statement. The July 8 strike was the second
attempt to kill Al-Fadhli. Al-Fadhli was the leader of a network of veteran al-Qaida operatives, sometimes called the Khorasan Group, who are tasked with plotting external attacks against the U.S. and its allies, Davis added. Davis did not elaborate on whether al-Fadhli was killed by a drone or a piloted aircraft. Al-Fadhli was a leader of the Khorasan group, a cadre of alQaida operatives who were sent from Pakistan to Syria to plot attacks on the west. Officials say it is embedded in the al Nusra front, Syria’s al-Qaida affiliate.

A
suspect has been identified in the suicide bomb attack that killed 32 people in Turkey’s Sanliurfa province, media reported on July 21. The blast took place on July 20 in Suruc district near the Iraq border. According to a report by Turkish daily Haberturk citing officials, one of three female Islamic State (IS) terror group members, who crossed into Turkey to conduct suicide attacks, is suspected to be the perpetrator of the attack. At least 27 people were killed and scores of others injured in a blast in Turkey’s Sanliurfa province near the Iraqi border on
July 20. One of three female Islamic State (IS) terror group members, who crossed into Turkey to conduct suicide attacks, is suspected to be the perpetrator of the attack. “We are concerned that the number of deaths will increase,” Hurriyet Daily quoted Turkey’s interior ministry as saying in a statement following the blast which occurred in Suruc district in the morning.
Al-Fadhli, who was previously based in Iran, was the subject of a $7million reward by the state department for information leading to his capture or death. He had been falsely reported as having been killed in 2014. Davis said he was “among the few trusted al-Qaida leaders that received advanced notification of the September 11, 2001, attacks”. Al-Fadhli was also involved in the October 2002 attacks against U.S. marines on Faylaka island in Kuwait, and on the French ship MV Limburg, Davis said. “His death will degrade and dis-
rupt ongoing external operations of al-Qaida against the U.S. and our allies and partners,” he said. Officials have said the Khorasan militants were sent to Syria by the al-Qaida leader Ayman alZawahiri to recruit Europeans and Americans whose passports allow them to board a US-bound airliner with less scrutiny.

UNSC nod to Iran nuclear deal

n a clear indication of social media’s increasing clout and power to influence public opinion, the White House has launched a Twitter account and a webpage to sell the nuclear deal with Iran to the American public. White House press secretary Josh Earnest told reporters en route to Pittsburgh on July 21 that the digital tools would be used to “advocate for the recently announced agreement to prevent Iran from getting a nuclear weapon”, Time reported. Twitter handle @TheIranDeal that has already gathered more than 2,000 followers — would be used by officials to “distribute facts” and “engage” with the public about the deal. The webpage will host fact sheets and infographics.

UNITED NATIONS: The UN Security Council on July 20 unanimously approved the landmark agreement reached with Iran by its permanent members and Germany aimed at stopping Tehran from getting nuclear weapons. The resolution presented by the US paves the way for the drastic sanctions imposed by the UN to be lifted once the International Atomic Energy (IAEA) certifies that Iran complied with the terms of the agreement reached last week in Vienna. With the resolution in force, India can proceed with some of the projects it has initiated in Iran without fear of international reprisals.

uslims across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh celebrated Eid-ul-Fitr on July 18 with religious fervour and gaiety. Tens of thousands of Muslims offered Eid prayers at Eidgahs or open grounds and mosques in twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad and in the other towns of Telangana and neighboring Andhra Pradesh. Attired in the new clothes and wearing skull caps, men and children thronged Eidgahs and mosques since morning for the ‘Namaz-eEid’, marking the culmination of the holy month of Ramadan. The ‘imams’ or priests in their sermons exhorted Muslims to introspect and lead the lives in accordance with Koran and Sunnah, the holy life of Prophet Mohammed. They advised Muslims to continue the good deeds of Ramadan for success in this life and the Hereafter. They underlined the need to have

empathy towards poor. The priests also made ‘dua’ (supplication) for unity among Muslims and for peace across the world especially in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Palestine and Egypt. The biggest congregation was held at the historic Mir Alam Eidgah in Hyderabad. The historic Makkah Masjid, Hocky Grounds,
Military Grounds, Secunderabad Eidgah and Madannapet Eidgah also saw huge gatherings. Police made elaborate arrangements for the smooth conduct of the Eid prayers by imposing traffic restrictions. Hyderabad Police Commissioner Mahender Reddy, who supervised the arrangements, said
15,000 personnel were deployed in the city for peaceful and smooth conduct of prayers. A festive mood prevails in Muslim neighborhoods as people greeted each other. Muslims constitute 30 percent of Hyderabad’s nine million population. Minister for Commercial Taxes T. Srinivas Yadav participated in the prayers at Nallagutta Masjid in Secunderabad and greeted Muslim brethren. Eid was celebrated with religious fervour in nine other districts of Telangana. Major congregations were seen in the towns of Warangal, Karimnagar, Nizamabad, Adilabad, Nalgonda and Mahabubnagar. The Eid was also celebrated with gaiety in Andhra Pradesh. Muslims offered Eid prayers in Kadapa, Kurnool, Anantapur, Nellore, Vijayawada, Guntur and other towns in the state. Before offering prayers, every Muslim family paid Fitra or charity on behalf of each member as per the Islamic rules so that the poor can also celebrate the festival.

ussia has developed an extra strong nuclear power reactor shell that can increase the reactor life up to 120 years and which can also be used in reactors to be set up in Tamil Nadu’s Kudankulam. “After a considerable research effort, the Central Research Institute for Machine Building Technology (a subsidiary of Atomenergomash, Rosatom’s nuclear engineering division) has developed a new, ultrapure steel grade for the VVER-TOI core shell,” Russian nuclear power corporation Rosatom said in a statement on Monday. “The pilot shell was produced at OMZ SpetsStal with technological
support from OMZ Izhora, which also did the testing of the new material,” it added. The extra-strong shell for the VVER-TOI reactor has been for the first time produced in Russia

Also, 38 per cent work on the terminal building is finished. The first aircraft will land there on December 31. The airport will commence commercial

to increase the reactor vessel life up to 120 years. The extra strength of the reactor shell is attributed to a new nickel-alloy steel grade, said Alexander Romashkin, the acting
deputy director of the Metallurgy and Engineering Institute affiliated with the Central Research Institute for Machine Building Technology. To manufacture the shell, a 420ton ingot was cast for the first time after the collapse of the Soviet Union. The ingot was then forged into a record-large shell, 6m high and 4.5m in diameter. As it has no weld seams, it will be used as a part of the reactor vessel which is most intensively bombarded by neutrons. Extension of the reactor vessel life is a key trend in the nuclear power industry. While reactors operated in Russia have a service life of 60 years, the new reactors to be installed at Novovoronezh NPP and Leningrad NPP-2 will work for 100 years.

Kerala: Kitchen gardens boost veggies output SANU GEORGE, THIRUVANANTHAPURAM
V
egetable imports by Kerala have fallen steeply, thanks to a growing number of people whose kitchen gardens have boosted vegetable production in the state. And Agriculture Minister K.P. Mohanan is beaming. According to Mohanan, nearly 75 percent of all vegetables consumed now in Kerala are grown within the state— and in kitchen gardens. Mohanan, who made the endeavour to boost vegetable production, told IANS that his aim was to ensure that this figure reach-
es 100 percent. “Several factors have contributed to a substantial growth of the domestic vegetable production,” the minister said.
In 2012, the production of vegetables in Kerala was a mere 22 percent. This made the state heavily dependent on Karnataka and Tamil Nadu for daily vegetable supplies. If there were traffic disruptions in the border regions of the two states, Kerala’s vegetable imports would suffer — immediately shooting up prices. And so Mohanan decided to actively promote the concept of kitchen gardens in Kerala. Even students and schools were roped in for this purpose. Eventually, the habit of “growing and eating one’s own vegetables appears to have clicked”, the minister said.

Bianchi died on July 17 as a result of severe head injuries after having been in a coma since

Duleep Trophy not scrapped, will resume from 2016-17 season IANS, MUMBAI
T GENEVA: FIFA president Sepp Blatter said late on July 20 that his resignation was motivated by the “pressure” he received after the arrest of seven senior FIFA officials. Blatter said he was happy to be alive after “the post-May 27 tsunami”, which did not incriminate him. The 79-year old president recalled that he was re-elected on May 29 with the support of 130 of his constituencies, but four days later, on June 2, his resignation was put “at the disposal” of the entity due to the pressures received.

Tying the knot after age 32 ups divorce risk IANS, NEW YORK
M
arking a major shift in divorce trends, a study has shown that couples who delay tying the knot in their 30s are more likely to split than those who get hitched in their late 20s. After the age of 32, the odds of divorce increase by five percent per year, the findings showed. Previous studies showed that delayed marriages lowered risk of divorces. “This is a big change,” said Nicholas Wolfinger from the University of Utah in US. “To the best of my knowledge, it is only recently
that marriage of thirty-something started to incur a higher divorce risk,” Wolfinger said. For the study, Wolfinger analysed data from the US Nation-
al Survey of Family Growth from 2006 to 2010. “It appears to be a trend that has gradually developed over the past 20 years: A study based on 2002 data observed that the divorce risk for people who married in their 30s was flattening out, rather than continuing to decline through that decade of life as it previously had,” Wolfinger added. Wolfinger’s analysis, detailed in a blog post for the Institute for Family Studies in the US, showed that prior to age 32 or so, each additional year of age at marriage reduces the odds of divorce by 11 percent.

Wine, berries can stain your teeth IANS, LOS ANGELES
W
ine, berries and hot beverages like tea and coffee can have long lasting effect on teeth, say experts. The experts at the Luster Pro Light brand have compiled a list of the top five culprits that cause staining to teeth, reports femalefirst.co.uk. Wine: As well as the rich dark ruby red coloring of red wine, your usual red plonk also contains tannins which will dry out the mouth making the teeth sticky and worsen stains. Even white wine drinkers are not safe! Berries: Berries such as blueberries, blackberries, cherries and other brightly colored fruits can stain teeth. Opt for fruits that
don’t stain your hands when handling them. Acidity in some foods and beverages, promotes staining by eroding the dental enamel. temporarily softening teeth and making it easier for chromogens to latch on. Tea and coffee: Coffee stains appear to be even more persistent than tobacco stains, in fact coffeestained teeth are more resistant to tooth brushing. While herbal tea is less likely to discolor teeth, it has been found to erode dental enamel substantially.

Rajamouli’s magnum opus
S.S. Rajamouli’s superhit film has become the first south Indian film to enter the `3 bn club in just nine days IANS, CHENNAI
S
.S. Rajamouli’s magnum opus Baahubali has become the first south Indian film to enter the `3 bn club in just nine days, confirms a trade analyst. It has surpassed the previous record held by superstar Rajinikanth’s Enthiran, which had collected approximately `2.9bn at the box office. “As of Saturday (July 18), the film has grossed `3.03 billion worldwide,” trade analyst Trinath told IANS. “The Hindi version of the film has netted over `500 million, setting a new record for a dubbed film. Despite the onslaught of Bajrangi Bhaijaan, the numbers of Baahubali have not been affected,” he said.
A mythological drama about two brothers at war for a kingdom, the film stars Prabhas, Rana Daggubati, Anushka Shetty and Tamannaah Bhatia in the lead roles. The second part in the `2.5bn franchise is slated for release next year. Why ‘Baahubali’ is India’s biggest blockbuster? It took S.S. Rajamouli’s magnum opus just five days to enter the `2 bn club worldwide, making it the fastest Indian film to achieve the rare feat. It has set several new records, has proved that a film need not always require a superstar to become a blockbuster and has successfully blurred the line between southern cinema and Bollywood. One of the biggest
achievements of the `2.50 million film is that it’s being celebrated unanimously across the country. “Nobody is asked whether they watched the Tamil, Telugu or Hindi version of the film. Irrespective of the language, ‘Baahubali’ is being watched and that in itself is an accomplishment for the makers,” Karthik Kumar, a Bangalorebased techie, told IANS. According to Alok Tandon, CEO, INOX Leisure, different versions of the film have done well in different locations. “In the whole of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Bangalore for example, the Telugu version has witnessed tremendous footfalls, whereas in Chennai, the Tamil version is doing extremely well. The Hindi version is attracting huge audience in other parts of the country,” Tandon told IANS. It is every essential for any big film to sustain the first Monday after release and continue its strong run during the weekdays. Baahubali passed that test with flying colors.
Rajamouli one of the best directors in India: Varun Dhawan MUMBAI: Actor Varun Dhawan, who is currently basking in the glory of back-to-back hits Badlapur and ABCD 2, says Baahubali director S.S. Rajamouli is “one of the best” in India. “S.S. Rajamouli is one of the best directors in our country. I think anyone who loves cinema should watch this movie (Baahubali). I think it’s an achievement and all the artists’ performances are superb,” Varun said here at a special screening of the film. Varun’s father, director David Dhawan, was also impressed by this magnum opus and said that the fim “will go a long way”. “It is a superb film. It is fantastic, really good, I enjoyed it.”
Said to be made on a budget of `2.50 bn, the film starring Prabhas, Rana Daggubati, Anushka Shetty and Tamannah Bhatia is about the two brothers at war for an ancient kingdom. Baahubali was released on July 10 and it became the fastest Indian film to enter the `1 bn club within two days since its release and it has even grossed over `2 bn club globally.
Hollywood is affecting Indian cinema: Irrfan Khan IANS, NEW DELHI
I
nternationally acclaimed actor Irrfan Khan says Indian cinema is being “dominated” by foreign films and this has “affected” the business of Bollywood films. Hollywood films like Furious 7, Avengers: Age of Ultron and Jurassic World have proved their mettle at the box office in India earlier this year. The 48-year-old, who has starred in various hit foreign films like Slumdog Millionaire, The Amazing Spider-Man and Life of Pi, believes Bollywood films are not a competition for Hollywood but the picture is different in India. “I’m working in both the industries as I’m enjoying my work on both sides. Hollywood demand different kind of skills. They have a different set of audience. So, as an actor it’s fortunate that I get chance to do different kind of work,” Irrfan, who was last seen in Jurassic World, told IANS.
“Both the industries have their own uniqueness. But Hollywood has a bigger reach and has its own universal language. It is more powerful. It has dominated our cinema. It can affect the business of Bollywood. But, our films are not affecting their business.”
‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’: Strong message of love, brotherhood
T
he much-awaited Salman Khan Eid release Bajrangi Bhaijaan is a far cry from the regular Salman Khan films. Though packed with a few selfglorification scenes and a farfetched plot, this film, for a change, is sensible. It’s a light, emotionally-packed drama that touches your heart. It is the story of Pavan Kumar Chaturvedi aka Bajrangi Bhaijaan, a sincere devotee of Lord Hanuman, who takes it upon himself to reunite a mute 6-year-old Pakistani girl, Shahida, who he calls Munni,
Film: “Bajrangi Bhaijaan”; Language: Hindi; Cast: Salman Khan, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Harshaali Malhotra, Om Puri; Director: Kabir Khan; Rating: ***1/2 with her family across the border. What makes this film stand apart among Salman’s repertoire is that he plays the saviour Bajrangi Bhaijaan with conviction of a simpleton and wins hearts instantly
when he makes up his mind to do no wrong. So much so that when he is questioned, “tum bahadur ho ya bewakoof?” He has no answer. Salman Khan is his usual lighthearted self, doing what comes naturally to him. But, fortunately those scenes are so well-amalgamated into the screenplay that, even the frivolity displayed, seems like an extension of his character and gains credibility. His trials and tribulations are endearing and you are one with him in his mission. With not a single dialogue to mouth, little Harshaali as Shahida,
floors you with her expressive eyes. Your heart melts when she clings on to Salman and you chuckle when she is playfully naughty. She shares a strong on-screen chemistry with Salman and probably that’s why the film is effective. Every other character in the film is well-etched. Nawazuddin Siddiqui as Chand Nawab a freelance small town broadcast journalist, who trails Bajrangi Bhaijaan while he is in Pakistan, performs competently. He adds a comic tinge to his character with ease, displaying his versatility as an actor.

He also credits director Anees Bazmi for his performance in the film. “I am not insecure, I can do it,” said John at the trailer launch of the film. Welcome Back is John’s first film after the critically acclaimed Madras Cafe. His home production Vicky Donor was a success at box office as well. When asked about his views on being a producer, the 42-year-old said: “I think every film is important, but I don’t stress on one particular film, whether it will work or not. My job is to perform and that’s what I mean to do. I make films, I enjoy doing that, one year, two year, three years, I don’t really care. Teen kills his father after years of abuse
Hassan Razzaq.
BY A STAFF WRITER ROOKLYN, NY -- A Brooklyn teen accused of fatally stabbing his dad is a good kid pushed to the brink by an abusive father who had been molesting one of his daughters for several years. “The son is a good son. He was getting beaten every night,” a neighbor named Bobby said of 19-year-old Hassan Razzaq. “This was a tragedy waiting to happen. The neighborhood knows about it, the police officers know about it, everybody knows about it.” “I don’t feel one bit sorry for the victim. That’s how sad it is,” said Bobby, who lives across the street. He would give only his first name. Razzaq has been arrested for allegedly plunging a kitchen knife into his 56-year-old father’s throat at their home on East Third Street in Kensington. Mohammad Razzaq was discovered by cops lying face-up in the living room at around 10 pm by the police responding to a report of an assault. “[Hassan] came running out. I said, ‘What’s the matter?’ He said, ‘Bobby, please don’t get involved. Stay out of it.’ I said, ‘What did you do?’ And then he just took off,” the neighbor recalled. Razzaq was charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon. He was held without bail, as his family sat stone-faced in the Brooklyn Criminal Court. Hassan had recently learned that one of his sisters had been molested by his dad for years, a prosecutor said. The father had just come back from Pakistan and the teen feared that another 15-year-old sister would become the next victim, said ADA, Tziyonah Langsom.

Imam and residential scholar of the ICN, Mufti Rizwan Ali, delivered an inspiring talk on the good deeds performed by the Muslims during the month of Ramadan. Drunk driver gets 30 yrs for killing Indian couple BY A STAFF WRITER AN MATEO, CA -- Marjorie Reitzell, who killed Indian American couple Kamal and Balbir Singh in 2013 while she was driving drunk, received a 30year prison sentence on July 8 in San Mateo County, Calif., Superior Court. In addition to the two second-degree murder convictions, Reitzell was also found guilty by a jury in May of two counts of gross vehicular manslaughter and drunk driving. San Mateo County Superior Court Judge Robert Foiles delivered the sentence, noting that Reitzell had previously been convicted in 2012 of drunk driving and was on probation for the previous crime. On the evening she killed the Singhs, who were out walking their dog in Menlo Park, Calif., a mixed residential and business neighborhood, Reitzell’s blood alcohol count was more than three times the legal limit. During the May trial, the 55-year-old woman said she had drunk three small bottles of brandy throughout the day, which would not

have impaired her judgment. Reitzell testified that the Singhs’ dog, Teddy, jumped out in front of her car, and she swerved to avoid hitting the dog, smashing into the Singhs from behind. She then swerved into the center divider and hit an oncoming car,
injuring four teenagers. The Singhs were pronounced dead at the scene. Prosecutors at the trial said the brutal impact of Reitzell’s vehicle hitting the Menlo Park couple caused dismemberment of their bodies. Reitzell was taken into custody on October 24 last–on the evening of the incident–but reportedly suffered from an undisclosed illness that kept her confined to a jail hospital. She repeatedly missed arraignment, reportedly on account of her illness, but finally made an appearance in court on November 12 and entered her plea. She was held on $2 million bail. ZEEL in Forbes list of ‘Super 50’ Indian cos BY A STAFF WRITER he latest issue of Forbes India (July 24, 2015) features Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited (ZEEL) in its maiden list of ‘India’s Super 50 Companies’. ZEEL is the only media company to feature in this prestigious list. In this list (which is not a ranking), Forbes India has picked companies not just on the basis of size or profits, but also for robustness and consistency. These companies have had the gumption to think differently, disrupt the market and also get their act together even after suffering set-backs with the result that the stock markets have rewarded them handsomely. Forbes India, with knowledge support from PwC India, adopted a robust, multi-stage process to select India’s Super 50 Companies. At the first stage, a set of eliminators was employed to arrive at a critical mass of strong contenders. Out of all listed companies on the stock exchanges, Forbes India then selected those with a market capitalization of more than Rs. 10,000 crore (as on March 31, 2015). All PSUs were eliminated and only the top two companies from any business group were included. These remaining companies were further evaluated on another set of parameters which included shareholder returns exhibited on the stock exchange over a three-year period, sales growth and return on equity. As a final check, Forbes India considered those companies which were more consistent than others--in the context of the parameters-and used relevant eliminators to remove the outliers, thus arriving at a strong list of companies that comprise the first-ever Super 50 listing.

Sri Jagannath Society takes out Ratha Yatra
BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO (IL) – The Sri Jagannath Society of Greater Chicago celebrated the Ratha Yatra festival of Lord Jagannatha on July 18 in the Mata-Ji temple premises, Elgin, IL. This was the 10th year this festival is being celebrated in greater Chicago area. This year, more than 300 enthusiastic devotees from all parts of Chicago and neighboring states attended the festival. Mafat Patel, one of the eminent philanthropists and business luminaries, was the chief guest of the event and took the role of Gajapati Maharaj (King) of Puri Jagannath Temple performing the unique rituals, known as “Chera Panhara” . The daylong event started with the worship of “Dwarapal” (gate keepers), Sun god, and Lord Jagannath , Balabhadra, Subhadra, and Sudarshan. The chariot was purified before “Dhadi Pahandi”, a unique procession in which devotees carry the deities from temple to the chariot in a specific order--

How to Develop Focus BY SWAMI MUKUNDANANDA HICAGO, IL -- Do you sometimes at the end of the day feel that you have been occupied with a number of things throughout but you haven’t got anything worthwhile done? It’s not a very good feeling because you don’t accomplish anything substantial and in return feel disheartened. Unfortunately for most people, this becomes a routine. They dissipate time and energy in doing a number of things, and yet don’t accomplish what they set out to. One of the major reasons why people squander away a lot of their valuable time, efforts and energy is because they lack FOCUS. We have all seen a magnifying glass as kids and even experimented burning a piece of paper. The rays of the sun when focused through the magnifying glass can light a fire. Similarly, steam rising from a boiling pot is unfocused, and fades into the atmosphere, but steam surging through a turbine is focused. In the same manner, our efforts throughout the day are dissipated on distractions and we lose sight of the goal in mind. Whether we wish to learn a new hobby, become financially independent or set up a new business, we need to focus on the goal. People who have learnt to harness the power of focus have gained mastery in their fields. People like Warren Buffet and Bill Gates have learnt to direct their efforts to a single purpose. We can pick such examples from everyday life as well. Two students in the same class perform differently depending on who has learnt to focus better. If both have to finish an important college assignment, one will get distracted by phone calls from friends, an entertaining movie or sheer laziness. Conversely the other student will overcome all these trivial distractions and successfully complete his assignment on time. With such sustained focus day after

day, he will be able to achieve much more academically than his peers who give in to distractions. With constant practice, we can learn to use the power of focus in our everyday lives. Day in and day out, we will achieve our goals; and even if we fail, we will develop the perseverance to march forward. This is a great way to maximize our potential and to live a life that is truly meaningful. Resolve firmly to focus on your personal, professional or spiritual goals and remember these words: “Getting distracted by trifles is the easiest thing in the world... Focus on your main duty”. Here are 5 simple tips to use the POWER OF FOCUS to accomplish your goals: 1. Whenever you have a task in hand, select a particular time of the day when you would like to work on it. Also set a
target time within which you would like to accomplish it. 2. Choose a place that will be most conducive to finish your task. This place should have the least potential of getting noisy or distracting. 3. Think of the inspiring reason that drives you to accomplish that task. Without a motivating purpose, you will not pursue your goals with enthusiasm. 4. Avoid all distractions like phone calls, small talk, TV, etc. 5. You must invest in developing the power of focus. Every day, spend some time alone to meditate and exercise as these activities help in strengthening the power of focus. The procession took place amid chanting of mantra, prayers, and enchanting sound of traditional drum and brass-made ‘Ghanta’. After Patel completed “Chera Pahanra”, devotees started pulling the chariot, and the scorching sun or the heavy rains could not deter them. The yatra culminated after the chariot reached Gundicha temple where Lord was to stay for nine days and return to main temple on July 26. All the attendees relished the delicious food served by SJSGC volunteers. The whole event was well organized by a few dedicated volunteers and SJSGC management committee members, Neel Nanda, Nayak, Subrat Mishr, Biswa Rath, and Seema Nanda. SJSGC is the only organization solely dedicated to bring in Jagannath Dharma in its purest form by practicing the ageold traditions and rituals in line with the process followed in in ShriKhetra Puri Dham. Plans are afoot to build a Jagannath Temple in Chicagoland.

Pujya Gurudevshri spreads fragrance of spirituality in Chicago
BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- Propounding the path of Bhagwan Mahavira, an ardent devotee of Shrimad Rajchandraji, Pujya Gurudevshri Rakeshbhai is a spiritual visionary and modern-day mystic. The founder of Shrimad Rajchandra Mission Dharampur, Pujya Gurudevshri has illuminated numerous lives across the globe through enlightening discourses and an array of meditation retreats. His divine benevolence has touched scores of underprivileged lives through the ten fold Shrimad Rajchandra Love and Care Programme, At present the Mission has 80 centres spread across the globe in North America, Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia. In addition, over 225 centres worldwide mould the youth and children, shaping a brighter future for them. Pujya Gurudevshri was accorded an affectionate welcome at the Chicago O’Hare International Airport, where He spent endearing moments interacting with seekers. The Master gave spirituality a new
C
meaning through three transformational pravachans at the Jain Society of Metropolitan Chicago. He empowered aspirants with techniques to translate profound knowledge into practical wisdom. Through everyday situations one encounters, he demonstrated how each one is responsible for their own joy and sorrow. While it appears as though circumstances determine one’s reactions, it is actually an individual’s independent choice. The spiritual guru further elucidated that the power to make the right choice is gained from the strength of one’s spiritual practices and satsang. Constantly studying oneself and remaining in awareness play a key role in strengthening one’s inner muscles. Introspection enables a shift in one’s values and thus in one’s perception of the world. It is this shift that gives one a new perspective of life and alters one’s interpretations of the occurrences in daily life. One may begin by only being able to see
the physical--that which is plainly visible to the eyes. Moving ahead, with education and enhanced thinking, one gains intelligence and deeper insight. As one progresses, one develops the power of discrimination and is able to make decisions which are in favour of that which is spiritually beneficial. Finally, the inward journey leads him to experience invisible inner bliss. Seekers were inspired to forge ahead on the path of liberation and bring about an inner revolution in their lives. Expressing their gratitude towards Pujya Gurudevshri, the committee members of the Jain Centre of Chicago felicitated the Master. Pujya Gur udevshri graced the residences of several seekers, blessing them with memories of a lifetime. It was amid joyous chanting that pious pratishthas ensued at the abodes of JagdishbhaiShobhaben Shah and Manish-Anchal Jain, consecrating the Divine in their hearts and homes. Aspirants boarded the Summer of George cruise for an evening of elevation with the
Sadguru. Views of the Chicago skyline faded in the Master’s captivating aura as energetic dance dedications uplifted spirits and melted hearts. Binding seekers with the thread of purity, Pujya Gurudevshri proceeded to his next destination on his dharmayatra. (ADVERTORIAL)

BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO. IL – ‘Dhee Punjab Di’ (daughter of Punjab), a Punjabi action and drama film depicting social evils of infanticide in Punjab and India, will be released worldwide on August 28. The movie, written, directed and produced by Baljeet Singh who also makes his acting debut as a Sardar hero of a Pollywood film, is sponsored by Makers Entertainment Private Limited and Adsvalley Affiliate Venture. This social film, to be released under the banner of Pollywood Cinema Private Limited, examines the impact of feticide and drugs epidemic in Punjab India. The story explains excruciation against women and children and abortions. It sheds light on the drugs epidemic among youth in Punjab that is increasing day by day. Decades of gender determination tests and female abortions are playing havoc with the male-to-female ratio in India in general and Punjab in particular. According to the census figures, in 1991 the gender ratio was 947 girls to 1000 boys. Ten years later, the ratio had fallen to 927 girls for 1000 boys. The states of Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Haryana have recorded more than 50-point decline in the new-born child gender ratio during this period. ‘Dhee Punjab Di’ is based on “this very social evil of female feticide which is prevalent in the Punjab of today,” said

Phone scam targets Dominion Virginia power consumers BY A STAFF WRITER ALLS CHURCH , VA – Scammers are targeting small businesses here during the busy lunch and dinner hours, often catching Dominion Virginia Power customers off guard. The residents are told their service will be disconnected if payment is not made immediately. The utility company said that more than 85 people had already received calls and at least eight customers had lost money. Clare & Don’s Beach Shack in Falls Church received a phone call from the scammer. “They said that we owed over $700,” said Rebecca Tax, who owns the restaurant with her brother. Tax said the caller was very convincing, telling an employee if she didn’t purchase a ‘MoneyPak/Green Dot’ card at the drug store, and pay the utility bill with it, the restaurant

Doc gets 71 months for A STAFF WRITER healthBYinsurance fraud
Dr Dipak Desai
BY A STAFF WRITER O U S TO N - T X - - A n Indian-origin doctor has been sentenced to 71 months in a federal prison and ordered to repay over $2.2 million for health insurance fraud, says the Federal Bureau of investigation (FBI). Dipak Desai, 65, who ran an endoscopy centre, overcharged the US health insurance systems for senior citizens and for the poor as well as private health insurers for providing anesthesia services, according to Daniel G. Bogden the Nevada federal prosecutor. The Las Vegas doctor, who had pleaded guilty to conspiracy and health care fraud, was sentenced by federal Judge Larry R. Hicks. “Dr. Desai intentionally defrauded the federal health care system for his own personal enrichment,” Bogden said. “We are hopeful this closes a long and sordid chapter of harm caused to the people and businesses of Nevada.” An FBI press release said that Desai and his endoscopy company’s chief operating officer Tonya Rushing “imposed intense pressure on the endoscopy center employees to schedule and treat as many patients as possible in a day, and instructed the nurse anesthetists to overstate in their records the amount of time they spent on the anesthesia procedures.” Rushing was earlier sentenced to a year in jail for her role in the scam.

would have its electricity disconnected. “They said it was going to happen imminently,” said Tax. According to Dominion, the scammers use sophisticated caller ID technology so it appears the call is coming from the utility company. Customers are also given the option to make a payment at company offices, which makes it sound legitimate.
“That option isn’t usually feasible to a customer, so the scammer pushes the option of payment over the phone,” said Mark Herring, Virginia Attorney General. The scammer also provides an 866 phone number. When a person calls it back, it sounds legitimate. “We want our customers to know that Dominion does not call our customers and threaten to cut off their electricity if immediate payment is not made,” said Daisy Pridgen, a Dominion spokesperson. She advised customers to hang up and call Dominion at 866-DOM-HELP. The utility company always works with customers to set up a payment plan and will provide several notifications in writing before power is scheduled to be disconnected. Rebecca Tax is relieved her restaurant didn’t fall for the scam, which would have been a financial burden.
Indian man is accused of robbing pawn shop BY A STAFF WRITER OUSTON, TX -- An Indianorigin man has been charged with robbing a pawn shop and a restaurant in Utah state, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Manmeet Singh Bhatia and an accomplice, Marc Conrad Kammerman, allegedly held up Check City, which makes loans and cashes checks, and The Smoke Shop, a barbecue restaurant, in Salt Lake City in May. A grand jury indicted them on robbery and firearms charges last week dnesday, an FBI press release said. While Indian-origin people who are involved in crimes in the US are usually mixed up in white-collar offenses like fraud and insidertrading, and even with domestic violence, it is rare for them to be accused of robbery. An Indian-origin nurse, who had achieved notoriety as the “Bombshell Bandit” in a string of bank robberies across three states, was in April sentenced to five years in a federal prison.

Woman killed in crash on Route 80 was pregnant BY A STAFF WRITER ORRISTOWN, NJ -- A woman killed in a chainreaction crash recently on Route 80 west was 18 weeks pregnant, officials said. The accident also claimed the lives of a man and an 18-month-old child when the Kia they were riding in was struck by Bhavuk Uppal’s Cadillac Escalade. At Morris County, Assistant Prosecutor Matthew Troiano’s request, Superior Court Judge William McGovern agreed July 13 afternoon to increase Uppal’s bail for several charges in the crash from $300,000 to $750,000. . The 22-year-old Mountain Lakes man was charged with three counts of death by auto, two counts of assault by auto, causing death or injury while driving while suspended, possession of drug paraphernalia and driving while intoxicated, Troiano said. Uppal, who appeared via closed circuit television from the Morris County Correctional Facility, does not

yet have an attorney but Troiano said he believes relatives are in the process of retaining one. The crash occurred shortly before 1:40 a.m. near milepost 34.7 when Uppal’s Escalade struck the Kia stopped in front of him in traffic near a highway construction area, State Police have said. The impact of the collision sent the
Kia crashing into a Jeep located in front of it, and sent the Esclade off the highway and into a grass embankment, where it overturned, State Police said. Flames consumed the Kia and the three occupants — a man, a woman, and a child — were pronounced dead at the scene, State Police said. Their initial announcements of the incident did not mention that the woman was pregnant. The occupants of the Jeep, two men from the Bronx, N.Y., were taken to Morristown Medical Center. Troiano said both have since been released from the hospital. During the bail hearing, Troiano described Uppal’s driving record as “nothing short of horrendous” due to infractions such as speeding, unsafe driving, reckless driving, using fake license plates and driving while suspended. Uppal’s prior criminal history includes six arrests since 2009 on charges ranging from theft to failing to turn over a controlled dangerous substance to law enforcement, Troiano said.
Walt Disney agrees to ‘desegregate’ Sikh BY A STAFF WRITER RLANDO, FL-- A Sikh Indian American man who spent the past seven years hidden from the public while working as a mail carrier at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla., will no longer be segregated, the Sikh Coalition has announced. Gurdit Singh had been delivering mail to the Disney corporate offices on the same route for seven years. While other mail carriers change their route every three weeks, Singh had maintained the singular route for years to shield him from the public view of guests visiting the resorts and theme parks. Singh, who wears a turban and maintains unshorn hair and a beard, does not match Disney’s “Look Policy”. He then contacted community leaders for help. After the Sikh Coalition and American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) intervened by sending a letter on Singh’s behalf, Disney changed its stance and allowed Singh to rotate his mail route, like the other mail carriers, every three weeks.

Indian accused of marriage fraud BY A STAFF WRITER
BY A STAFF WRITER ATERTOWN, NY-An Indian citizen and Watertown resident has pleaded guilty in US District Court to conspiracy to commit marriage fraud after arranging an elaborate scheme, including staged photos, to fool immigration officials. Jasvir Kumar, 45, was sentenced to time served in prison. He had previously been ordered deported at an immigration hearing in February. Assistant US Attorney Carol G. Bridge said Kumar came to America in March 2008 on a non-immigrant tourist visa. After overstaying his visa, he conspired with Suhkvinder Chhokar, a naturalized US citizen and fellow Watertown resident, to marry an American, which would allow him lawful permanent resident status. The court said Kumar and Chhokar paid the unnamed citizen $10,000 to get married and field the paperwork with US Immigration Citizenship and Immigration Services. They added that Kumar staged the phony pictures and filed false affidavits to support the claim. However, when Kumar and his so-called wife visited immigration officials, his wife admitted the marriage was fake. The court said charges are pending against Chhokar. The court said US Citizenship and Immigration services, Fraud Detection and National Security Unit and Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Homeland Security Investigations aided in the investigation.

No one should have to face daily humiliation because of religious beliefs. I am also grateful to Disney and hope this decision opens the door for other Sikhs who wish to work for this company.”

Malina Singh
BY A STAFF WRITER AKE LUZERNE, NY -- A 20-yearold Indian American woman has admitted to driving drunk and killing a pedestrian who was walking along the shoulder of a Saratoga County, New York, road. Malina Singh, of Lake Luzerne, N.Y., has pleaded guilty to second-degree vehicular manslaughter, a felony, before acting Saratoga County Court Judge Matthew J. Sypniewski. Singh was driving her Ford Fusion on Route 9N on September 5, 2014, when she struck and killed 34-year-old Jonathan Rogers, who was walking alongside Route 9N at the time of the crash. Prosecutors say her blood-alcohol content was 0.18 per cent after the crash, more than twice the legal limit. She is expected to be sentenced on August 10 to two to six years in prison. Singh will also be required to install an ignition interlock device on her car upon her release for three additional years.

High heels are very risky!
Forced eating does no good to children: Study
High heels are the growing cause of premature osteoarthritis and are also associated with plantar fasciitis — one of the most common causes of heel pain IANS, NEW DELHI
E
xcess use of high heels both in men and women is fast becoming the cause of osteoarthritis, health experts say. According to experts, high heels cause unequal weight distribution on the metatarsals (foot bones) exposing those areas of foot joints which normally are not designed to bear weight, and this results in painful foot conditions like bunions and meta-tarsalgias (fore-foot pain). “High heels are the growing cause of premature osteoarthritis. Wearing high heels has also been associated with plantar fasciitis — one of the most common causes of heel pain. It involves pain and inflammation of a thick band of tissue,” said Abhay Nene, consultant spine surgeon, Wockhardt Hospital in Mumbai. He also said that one should wear heels of one inch maximum and that the duration for which a high heel is worn is directly related to the pain. “It is recommended that high heels should be worn when one is planning to walk less like getting out of car for a party venue and then
walking back to car for home. The longer one wears high heels, the more are the chances of foot injury,” added Nene.
It is recommended that high heels should be worn when one is planning to walk less Nene also said that wearing high heels has been linked to knee pain and premature/early arthritis of the knee joints. American Osteopathy Association reports that one in 10 women wear heels, and most of them develop severe pain and
swelling in the fore foot, hind foot, ankle, knees, hips and spine. “Knee transplant can be a solution for a knee effected by osteoarthritis but it can’t be considered a solution for knee pain caused by high heels. If one can avoid knee pain by wearing wedges with limited heel height, instead of high heels, then why undergo a surgery.” “A recommended sole should be flexible at toe box. It should be light and reciprocating bare foot walking as close as possible. A thick sole may add to the weight of the shoe,” said Nene. Every time a woman puts on a pair of high heels she is putting dangerous levels of strain on her joints, said a study from Stanford study.

The researchers found that sodium reduction using the ingredient can potentially decrease sodium intake by 230-300 milligrams per day or about seven-nine percent of

The potential decrease of sodium intake by 300 milligrams per day in adults age 19-50 years is predicted to significantly reduce systolic blood pressure and yield healthcare cost savings annually. The research, published in the journal Food Science & Nutrition, assessed the potential impact of a sodium reduction technology on sodium intake via a modelling analysis. The researchers used the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2007-2010 data that included over 17,000 participants.
