Democrats choose Clinton Bernie Sanders puts a dramatic end to a fractious campaign by personally having her nominated at the Democratic Party convention ARUL LOUIS, PHILADELPHIA

H

illary Clinton wrestled her way into history on July 26 becoming the first woman to be nominated by a major political party for the President of the United States and was hailed by her husband, former President Bill Clinton, as “the best darn change-maker I ever met”. Her insurgent rival in the Democratic Party, Bernie Sanders, put a dramatic end to a fractious campaign by personally having her nominated unanimously by acclamation at the party convention here. Hillary came on a video link to thank the Democratic convention delegates and said, “I can’t believe we just put the biggest crack in the glass ceiling yet.” If she is elected in November, she will join Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany, Prime Minister There-

ARUL LOUIS, PHILADELPHIA

PHILADELPHIA: US President Barack Obama on July 27 night made a fervent appeal for Hillary Clinton, casting the Democratic nominee as a custodian of his legacy while rejecting Republicans’ message as fostering anger and hate. Obama, during his address at the second-day of the Democratic National Convention (DNC) here, said his former secretary of state is a better qualified candidate than even he or her husband, former President Bill Clinton. “I can say with confidence there has never been a man or a woman -- not me, not Bill, nobody -- more qualified than Hillary Clinton to serve as president of the United States of America,” Obama said. “This is not your typical election...It’s not just a choice between parties or policies; the usual debates between left and right. This is a more fundamental choice -- about who we are as a people, and whether we stay true to this great American experiment in selfgovernment,” the President said.

nomination and eventually made history by becoming the first African-American to win the presidency. The convention that started on July 25 in disarray with the party chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz having resigned over the weekend after a leak of internal emails showed the leadership undermining Sanders, and his supporters trying to disrupt the meeting, hit a high note on July 26 by the time Bill Clinton spoke. The boos and jeers of Sanders’ supporters faded away and the popular President was greeted with a standing ovation. In a sentimental speech that began with being drawn by her magnetism when he first saw Hillary at Yale University in 1971, Bill Clinton traced their courtship and their life that took them once to the White House and her, afterwards, to the Senate and the State Department.

Sanders rallies support for Hillary mid a sustained revolt by his supporters, Bernie Sanders, the unsuccessful insurgent candidate for the Democratic Party presidential nomination, struggled on July 25 night to rally the fractured party to support Hillary Clinton against Donald Trump, the Republican Party nominee. Speaking at the party convention here, Sanders declared: “Hillary Clinton must become the next president of the United States.” With Trump, “the choice is not even close”.

The convention, which is to be the coronation of the Clinton dynasty with Hillary vying for the nation’s top job once held by her

husband Bill, was marred by the weekend resignation of the Democratic Party Chair, Debbie Wasserman Schultz, following leaks of party emails that showed the leadership favouring Clinton and undercutting Sanders. The Democratic Party insists that their computers were hacked by Russians and links Soviet President Vladimir Putin and Trump. Day-long protests in Philadelphia city by Sanders supporters, the Sanderistas, carried on to the convention floor where they booed speaker after speaker, starting with Christian pastor Cynthia Hall who prayed for Clinton’s victory.

BRIEFS: US to help India fight terrorism WASHINGTON: The cooperation between the US and India in the fight against the scourge of terrorism is “extremely strong and robust”, the US State Department has reaffirmed. “They (India) understand this issue and our cooperation -- law enforcement, counter-terrorism, countering violent extremism -- is extremely strong and robust,” Elizabeth Trudeau, Director in the US State Department Press Office, said in the daily press briefing here on July 26. Without referring to any particular case, Trudeau said “the US and India have a joint commitment to fighting against violent extremism -- the kind that impacts the people of India or anywhere around the world”.

Obama’s half-brother to vote for Trump WASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama’s Kenyan halfbrother said he will vote for Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump because he wants to make America great again. “I like Trump because he speaks from the heart,” Malik Obama told New York Post from his home in the rural village of Kogelo. “Make America Great Again is a great slogan. I would like to meet him.” Malik Obama, 58, a Democrat, said his “deep disappointment” in his brother Barack’s administration has led him to recently switch allegiance to “the party of Lincoln”. The last straw, he said, came earlier this month when FBI Director James Comey recommended not to prosecute Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton over her use of a private e-mail servers when she was Secretary of State.

Sikh woman with a blue ‘dupatta’ covering her head offered ‘ardaas’ (prayer). A suit clad Muslim from Pakistan with a bow tie vowed support. A black pastor and a Hispanic lawmaker lamented that Democrats had failed them. Tech billionaire Peter Thiel made history by declaring to gathered Republicans he was proud to be gay. And Eileen Collins, the first female commander of a US Space

Shuttle pined for a leadership that puts America first. A bitter rival congratulated Donald Trump on winning the Republican presidential nomination, but amid boos Ted Cruz declined to be a “servile puppy dog” of the Manhattan mogul who had attacked his wife and father. “No big deal!” tweeted the brash billionaire on “Lying Ted’s” mutiny as the Trump Train tooted off on a tumultuous trip to the White House with his clan in every compartment and “The Donald” him-

self firmly in the driver’s seat. Cruz was not the only one not on board as 120,000 red, blue and white balloons and loads of confetti rained down as the billionaire and his unassuming VP pick Mike Pence and their families waved with a promise to be the voice of the working Americans.

Party chief Reince Priebus stood sheepishly on one side of the platform. The Station Master — nay the Republican governor of Ohio, John Kasich — did not even peep in once all through the four day Republican national convention in Cleveland in his home state.

ll through my life, I’ve done whatever I felt like doing” — this quote aptly describes the fiercely independent-minded Mahasweta Devi, the doyen of activist-writing in India, who died on July 28 aged 90. The Ramon Magsaysay and Jnanpith awardee Bengali novelist penned telling commentaries on the sufferings and oppression of tribals, and in a rarity for a citybred writer, came down from the ivory tower to mingle with them. She shared their food and huts, tried to understand their problems and fought the powers-that-be to uphold the rights and better the living condition of these backward people. In her six-decade literary career, she authored over 120 books, comprising 20 collections of short stories and around 100 novels and contributed innumerable articles and columns to newspapers and magazines, a large number of them woven around tribal life. Adopting a distinctly matter-offact style free from sentimentality, Mahasweta vividly portrayed the sufferings the tribals endured at the

Rajnath to visit Pakistan NEW DELHI: Amid tension over violence in Kashmir, Home Minister Rajnath Singh is scheduled to travel to Pakistan to attend the Saarc Home/Interior Ministers Conference in August, official sources confirmed. In the meeting, scheduled on August 3 and 4, Rajnath Singh would raise the issue of cross-border terrorism. The Home Minister has already

The Saarc leadership had agreed in 2005 during the 13th Summit in Dhaka that Home/Interior Ministers of the Saarc nations may meet annually to strengthen cooperation in the area of counter-terrorism.

‘Modi can even have me murdered’ NEW DELHI: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was so furious with the AAP that he can even have him (Kejriwal) murdered. In an open appeal to his party volunteers, ministers and legislators, Kejriwal said the Aam Aadmi Party was passing through “a critical time” and the situation was sure to worsen. Accusing Modi of acting in anger and trying to crush the AAP, Kejriwal

said: “They can have us killed. They can even have me killed. Asking the legislators to discuss the situation with their families, he said: “If you are ready, then stay with us. If there are doubts, then drop out, for now.” According to him, Modi was orchestrating all the government action against his party because he wanted to break it at a time when it was spreading wings in Punjab, Goa and Gujarat.

Kashmir Valley locked down again IANS, SRINAGAR

C

urfew was re-imposed in various places in the Kashmir Valley on July 28 following clashes between protesters and security forces amid heavy rains, hours after a dragging security lockdown was lifted in all areas barring the volatile southern districts. A police officer said here that angry young men took to the streets and hurled stones at security forces, prompting authorities to re-impose curbs on the movement of people at places where peace was breached. The government had lifted curfew from various places in the restive valley on Tuesday. But as soon as people were allowed to move, clashes broke out in Srinagar and at some other places in southern Kashmir. The curfew was, however, not removed from south Kashmir amid fears that a separatist-called march

to Kulgam town may trigger more violence. All link roads and entry points to the south of the valley were closed and no vehicular movement was allowed on the Jammu-Srinagar highway that runs through the region, the worst-hit in the unrest since July 8 which has left nearly 50 people dead and thousands injured. Senior separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani, in house detention, defied the restrictions and came

out of his residence in upscale Hyderpora neighbourhood. Police took Geelani, chairman of the hardline Hurriyat Conference faction, into preventive custody. He was briefly lodged at a nearby police station, police said. Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, chairman of the moderate Hurriyat faction, was also detained after he tried to march towards Kulgam, breaking the security cordon around his house here, an aide told IANS.

Politics touches a new low in UP P

Another gory chapter was added to this Hall of Shame last week as the state’s politics swung between a vocal, seething with rage ‘behenji’(sister), who announced that she was a ‘devi’ (goddess) to her caste

IANS, LUCKNOW

olitics has never been kind in Uttar Pradesh, India’s most populous and electorally the most crucial state. There have been instances in the past when lawmakers have shamed the voters by their conduct. They have fought a pitched battle inside the state assembly, using chairs and mikes as missiles to target each other; there has been a deadly attack on a former chief minister inside a guest house; the house of a state Congress chief has been attacked and set ablaze by a rampaging mob. Another gory chapter was added to this Hall of Shame last week as the state’s politics swung between a vocal, seething with rage ‘behenji’(sister), who announced that she was a ‘devi’ (goddess) to her caste and a class VII, school-going ‘beti’ (daughter) who was targeted for the sins and comments of his politician father. The Daya Shankar SinghMayawati episode saw the state witnessing an unsavoury, never before verbal free-for-all with one side calling a four-time chief minister a prostitute and a hapless, innocent family being called names in public.

All hell broke loose last week as soon as TV channels aired the comments of now former BJP state vice president Daya Shankar Singh accusing the BSP chief of selling tickets at a price and, in a disparaging simile, comparing “pricing” to that of a sex worker who sleeps with the highest bidder.

Daya Shankar’s wife, Swati Singh initially huddled with the family, only to come out later and blast the BSP for the remarks. And so even as Singh pleaded that he was only making a suggestion, the die had been caste and the uproar in the Rajya Sabha was followed by the BJP first removing the leader from all party posts and then expelling him from the party for six years. The BJP, trying to ride the Dalit goodwill in the aftermath of a slew of pro-Dalit schemes and announcements, has sensed that its Dalit Dream was in for a drubbing by the senseless comment of a leader. But, by now, the BSP had smelt an opportunity to encase on the slur.

Has violence become its own master in Kashmir? The cost paid in terms of human lives and economy since the July 8 killing of militant commander Burhan Wani and the later street protests will haunt the Kashmir for long IANS, SRINAGAR

H

as violence become its own master in Jammu and Kashmir? It looks like, with both mainstream and separatist leaders admitting they are not in control of the situation in the valley. The cost paid in terms of human lives and economy since the July 8 killing of militant commander Burhan Wani and the later street protests will haunt the Kashmir Valley for long. Kashmir’s tourism season had started wonderfully this summer after the unprecedented floods of 2014. Hotels and houseboats in the valley ran full and were overbooked till September-end. That rosy picture has faded into oblivion as if it never existed. Every tourist except those going to Ladakh has left the Kashmir Valley.

A still of shutdown in Kashmir.

“All bookings have been cancelled and it is shutters this year for the tourist industry,” said a top hotelier who did not wish to be named. Most hotels in Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg, the three major tourist destinations in Kash-

mir, have decided to shut their establishments for now. Trade and industry have bled white during the last 15 days of curfew and separatist-called shutdowns. A modest estimate puts the losses suffered by them during this

period at a whopping Rs 1,000 crore. Supplies are running thin as the strategic Srinagar-Jammu highway, the lifeline to the landlocked valley, remains shut because of protests during the day. Trucks carrying petroleum prod-

ucts and other essentials to the valley are entering at night, said a senior official. The highway has been worst hit because most protests in south Kashmir have taken place in towns and villages situated either on the highway or close to it. Education has taken an even more severe beating. Universities, colleges and schools have been shut in the valley for nearly a month. The government decision to open schools in four districts is yet to evoke a positive response from the students or teachers. The number of pilgrims arriving for the ongoing Amarnath Yatra has been steadily declining. Due to this, the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board has closed two out of the four registration counters for the pilgrims in the Jammu region. It is time for Kashmiris to introspect and ask who represents them today.

The woman works here in a private company and has registered a case under a relevant section of the cyber crime law, police said. The complainant said she came in contact with the accused on social networking site Facebook a few months ago. After some time, the man proposed marriage to her and both started sharing intimate pictures and personal details through WhatsApp, police said. According to police, the woman alleged that the man later hacked her Facebook account, posted obscene pictures and started blackmailing her.

Telangana to set up separate body to handle NRI issues HYDERABAD: The Telangana government will establish Centre for Non Resident Telanganaites’ Affairs (CENTA) to handle the issues of NRIs from the state, state NRI Affairs Minister K.T. Rama Rao said on July 27. He said that the center would also have district level offices. The state government will also launch an exclusive portal for NRIs with information and online services, Rao said at a meeting with representatives of NRIs’ associations and other stakeholders on the proposed NRI policy of the state. Under the proposed policy, a 24x7 control room will be established while a help desk will also be created at Hyderabad airport. Rao promised that this would be the best policy in the country for the welfare of immigrants. The focus of the policy would be unskilled blue collar workers migrating to Gulf and other countries like Malaysia and Thailand and students who are going abroad for education. Referring to increasing incidents of uneducated and unskilled workers and even students being cheated, the minister said the government would deal firmly with unauthorized recruiting agents and consultancies. Stating that there is lack of authentic data about immigrants from the country or from Telangana, he announced that a database of migrants from the state to various countries will be created. This database is expected to help the government in speedy resolution of issues and in ensuring effective implementation of the policy. Since such data has also become necessary in view of the security issues, the immigrants in various

countries will be encouraged to register themselves with the respective Indian embassies. Rama Rao, who is son of Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao, said while the government may not be able to stop migration completely but it definitely can contain problems linked to migration. There will be premigration orientation for the migrants to educate them about the laws in the countries they are migrating to. There will also be pre-departure orientation to students going to US. A programme will also be taken up to create awareness among uneducated potential immigrants. The department of culture will conduct the programme in villages. The minister said a corpus fund for the welfare of NRIs will be established. A special officer will be appointed to assist NRIs wishing to invest in Telangana. He also announced that the government will celebrate Pravasi Telangana Diwas to celebrate success stories of NRIs.

Reunited with mother after 28 years IANS, HYDERABAD

I

t was an emotional reunion after 28 years as two daughters from Dubai finally traced their Indian mother thanks to the help from the Hyderabad police. Tears rolled down the eyes of Ayesha Rasheed Eid Obaid alias Kanoo Rasheed and Fatima Rasheed Eid Obaid as they embraced their mother Nazia Begum in the office of Deputy Commissioner of Police V. Satyanarayana in the old city of Hyderabad on July 21. “We never thought we would meet our mother in lifetime. Allah had fixed the meeting and we are glad that we got to see our mother after 28 long years,” said Ayesha, who along with her sister had been making frantic efforts to trace their mother for several months. Nazia, now 60, was married to a UAE national Rasheed Eid Obaid

Rifaq Masmari in 1981 at a Qazi’s office here. He took her to Fujairah province in UAE. As he was already married, the Hyderabadi woman faced problems in living there. She lived in UAE for four years and had two daughters Ayesha Rasheed Eid Obaid alias Kanoo Rasheed and Fatima Rasheed Eid Obaid. Nazia was divorced by her

husband following some dispute. He sent her back to India but did not allow her to take her daughters along. After two years, Nazia’s parents married her to a fruit vendor from Bidar in Karnataka. She now has two sons and a daughter from the second marriage. While she was living with her family in Bidar, her two daughters

Ayesha Rasheda and Fatima Rasheed who are now aged 29 years and 26 years respectively came to Hyderabad in search of their mother. In January, they approached the DCP with a photograph of their mother. Pamphlets and posters were printed and circulated all over the south zone. Television channels aired stories about the plight of the two women who were desperate to meet their mother. During meeting with old qazis, police got a small clue. Police made strenuous efforts for six months to trace Nazia. Nazia had thin memories about her daughter because she saw them around 30 years ago. All she could remember was her younger daughter had six fingers. The police cross checked the identity mark and after the confirmation arranged their meeting.

Setback for India’s hope New Delhi’s hopes for a permanent seat on the Security Council were dampened after talks on reforms were pushed to the next session ARUL LOUIS, UNITED NATIONS

I

ndia’s hopes for a permanent seat on the Security Council were dampened as the General Assembly decided to push further negotiations on reforms to the next session after discussions this year failed to make headway. The Assembly on July 27 unanimously approved the decision to roll over further action and to set up an “open-ended working group” on Council reforms. “It is unfortunate that the 70th anniversary of the United Nations was not able to build up momentum with a view to reaching an agreement on this important item of the agenda of the General Assembly,” India and its reforms allies, Brazil, Japan and Germany, said in a joint statement. Speaking on behalf of the four nations, Brazil’s Permanent Antonio Patriota told the Assembly: “The

longer we postpone a decision on the reform of the Security Council, the greater discredit brought upon the United Nations in its core function of promoting peace and security.” The four countries jointly work for expanding the Council’s permanent membership and mutually support each other for permanent

seats and are known as G4. After more than 20 years of stalling, the Council reform process gained momentum last year when a negotiating text was adopted by the General Assembly overcoming sustained opposition to it from a determined small group of countries like Pakistan and Italy.

The adoption of the text was a breakthrough as meaningful negotiations could not be held without such a document. It had been expected that the momentum would continue and the reforms would be adopted in the current year, which marks the 70th anniversary of the founding of the world body. The negotiating text was created on the basis of a survey carried out by Courtenay Rattray of Jamaica, the previous chair of the Inter-Governmental Negotiations on Council reform, and it was adopted by the Assembly after insistence of Sam Kutesa, the president of the last session of the Assembly. In May, India’s Permanent Representative Syed Akbaruddin told the negotiations that of the 122 countries that made written submissions for Rattray’s survey, 113 - or more than 90 percent - supported expanding both categories of Council membership.

We assume, that he was the only shooter. #gunfire #munich,” the police had tweeted earlier. A total of 21 people were injured, he said, including three who were in serious condition. The police chief said that the gunman was 18-year-old Iranian from Munich who had been living in Munich for longer than two years, CNN reported.

SHORT TAKES 18 militants killed in Afghanistan KABUL: At least 18 militants were killed and 17 others injured when security forces raided Taliban positions in Afghanistan’s Dasht-eArchi district, an official said on July 28. According to the official, the security forces backed by aircrafts attacked Taliban hideouts on July 27. Over 20 militants were also arrested in Saripul Province, the official added.

57 die in Nepal landslides, floods KATHMANDU: At least 57 persons have been killed and thousands forced to flee their homesteads due to landslides and floods in Nepal since July 25. According to the Nepal’s Ministry of Home Affairs, at least 20 people have gone missing and seven dozen houses have been destroyed by the floods and landslides across the country. At least 14 districts of Nepal are hit by the flash floods and landslides. The worst hit is Pyuthan district where deaths touched 24 by July 27 evening.

Children vaccinated in Karachi under security

Photo taken by a mobile device shows police vehicles near the Munich shopping mall where a shootout took place on July 22.

“Police don’t believe the gunman, an 18-year-old German-Iranian, had any accomplices,” he noted. The motive for the shoot-

ings was unclear, the police president said, adding that 2,300 law enforcement officials responded to the incident, BBC reported.

KARACHI: Backed by armed police guards, health workers on July 26 began a three-day polio immunization drive in Karachi, Pakistan’s most populous city. The health workers went from house to house to administer the polio drug. Children up to the age of five were covered. Giving polio vaccine is fraught with danger in Pakistan, where the health workers are at times targeted by Islamist militants. Some Islamic clerics and Taliban members say that the US-made polio vaccines can sterilize Pakistanis in a bid to reduce the country’s Muslim population.

Nepal President asks political parties to elect new PM ANIL GIRI, KATHMANDU

P

resident Bidya Devi Bhandari on July 25 called on the political parties of Nepal to elect within a week a new Prime Minister based on political consensus and form a cabinet, a day after Prime Minister K.P. In a press statement on July 25, President Bhandari called on the parties to form a consensus govern-

ment within a week in accordance with Article 298 (2) of Nepal’s recently promulgated Constitution. Prior to this, she held consulta-

tions with top leaders of the three major political parties -- Prime Minister and Communist Party of Nepal-United Marxist-Leninist Chairman K.P. Sharma Oli, Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba, and Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist Centre) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’. The Oli-led cabinet on July 24 recommended to the President to remove the hurdles in formation of a new government by invoking Article 305 of the Constitution as there was no provision to elect a new Prime Minister after the incumbent Prime Minister’s resignation in the transition. In her meeting with the

political party leaders, Bhandari stressed on consensus among the parties and asked them to move ahead in the spirit of cooperation. She said the biggest political risk lies in holding elections to the local, provincial and state levels and urged the political parties to invest maximum energy to implement the new Constitution. Though the President made a call, it is unlikely that Nepal will get the a new Prime Minister within the seven days. If parties fail to form such a government within seven days, parliament will start the process of electing the new Prime Minister on the basis of majority votes.

tar off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin starred with a seven-wicket haul as India defeated West Indies by an innings and 92 runs on the fourth day of the first Test at the Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Stadium here on July 24. Ashwin decimated the West Indies’ middle and lower order after lunch to boast figures of 7/83. This was India’s biggest margin of victory outside the sub-continent. The Chennai off-spinner made good use of the conditions to extract appreciable turn from the pitch and was helped along by some poor application by the West Indies batsmen. Carlos Braithwaite, who remained unbeaten on 51, was the highest scorer among the hosts. Coming together with the hosts toterring at 132/8, Braithwaite and Devendra Bishoo (45) engaged in a desperate battle with the Indian bowlers as they sought to postpone defeat. The duo displayed copious amounts of patience and application — qualities sadly missing in their top order colleagues — to frustrate the Indian bowlers for a long time and forge a 95-run partnership. Bishoo even hit Ashwin over the mid-wicket boundary for a six a couple of overs before tea to offer some much needed cheer to the home crowd. However, the hosts’ heroic resistance suffered a rather tame end

shortly after tea. Bishoo fell agonisingly short of a half-century when he offered a relatively tame catch to Cheteshwar Pujara at midwicket while trying to hoick a delivery by Ashwin. Shannon Gabriel lasted all of three deliveries before being outfoxed by an Ashwin delivery that spun in sharply to hit the stumps as the visitors celebrated a well-deserved victory. Earlier, the West Indies continued their battle during the rainshortened morning session. Opening batsman Rajendra Chandrika and Samuels forged a 67-run stand following the dismissal of Darren Bravo early in the morning. The match was halted due to rain half an hour before the end of

DUBAI: Star Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin’s match-winning seven-wicket haul in the first Test against the West Indies helped him regain the No.1 spot among bowlers in the latest International Cricket Council (ICC) Test rankings released here on July 27. The Chennai born tweaker not only regained the top spot in the bowler rankings but also consolidated his position as the best allrounder with a knock of 113 in the first innings of the Antigua Test, which India won by an innings and

Tendulkar congratulates Kumble, Kohli, Ashwin for Test win MUMBAI: Legendary batsman Sachin Tendulkar on July 25 congratulated the Indian cricket team for its thumping win over the West Indies by an innings and 92 runs in the first Test match of the four-match cricket series in Antigua. 92 runs. Ashwin has replaced Pakistan leg-spinner Yasir Shah, who had grabbed the number one R. handed overnight batsman Bravo edged an away-moving delivery from pacer Umesh Yadav to wide third slip fielder Ajinky Rahane, who dived low to his left to pluck a brilliant catch. It was just the start the Virat Kohli-led visitors wanted and the wicket further boosted their confidence. However, the home batting duo of Chandrika and Samuels came out with strong resistance to deny India any more wickets at the Sir Vivian Richards stadium. Samuels,35, took the attack to the opposition and hit 11 boundaries among the 85 deliveries he faced. Indian bowlers also made the fault of bowling much outside the off stump.

NADA defers verdict on wrestler Narsingh IANS, NEW DELHI

D

ope-tainted wrestler Narsingh Yadav will have to wait more to know his fate as the National Anti Doping Agency (NADA) on July 27 deferred the announcement of the verdict. During a prolonged hearing spanning more than three hours, Narsingh’s lawyers pleaded that the 26-year-old was a victim of circumstances and urged the panel not to put a ban on his Rio Olympic prospects. Narsingh’s chances of participating in the upcoming Rio Games came under a cloud last Sunday when he returned a positive result for a dope test conducted by the NADA on June 25. Following this, the Mumbaibased grappler, who was selected to represent the country in the men’s 74kg freestyle category ahead of two-time Olympic medallist Sushil

Kumar, was handed a provisional suspension. He ran into further trouble after it was announced that a second test conducted on July 5 has also returned a positive result. Meanwhile, under pressure from the United World Wrestling, a hes-

itant Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) on July 26, named Parveen Rana for the replacement slot in order to preserve India’s Olympic quota in the 74kg freestyle category. WFI President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh said that Rana’s name was sent on July 25 — which

was the last date for naming replacements — to secure the Olympic quota. “Although Praveen Rana has been named as replacement for Yadav if he gets a clean cheat, I am ready to fight another battle for him to secure his Olympic berth,” Singh told IANS. “Rana’s name was sent to secure country’s Olympic quota and the proposal was accepted on July 26. If we wouldn’t have recommended Rana’s name, we would have missed our quota,” he added. Singh, however, is still hopeful that Narsingh has a slim chance of participating in the quadrennial extravaganza, something which looks a distant possibility going by Sports Minister Vijay Goel’s comments. “His road to the Olympics has not completely ended. Now, it’s up to Yadav to prove his innocence. Once given clean cheat, he will go for the Olympics,” Singh said.

The minister on Wednesday said that no player in the Olympics squad can be substituted if he or she has been suspended by an antidoping panel. “I don’t think any person is allowed as replacement of another, if the original player has failed the dope test,” Goel told reporters in Parliament. “In case a player is seriously unwell, then under extraordinary circumstances the concerned agency considers substituting another player,” the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader added. But Singh refuted Goel’s claims, saying: “The minister is unaware of the rules. He is saying such things due to lack of information. Rana’s name has already been accepted.” Narsingh had claimed of a conspiracy to frame him and had filed a police report in this regard, although he refrained from naming anyone.

Speaking to the media in Rameswaram, Parrikar said some objects have been found in the sea and are being examined to ascertain whether they are a part of the missing aircraft. “There is no confirmed report, but there are some objects located. The ships have been asked to verify them. Unless something is positively located, it cannot be confirmed. As of now, it is only an indicator. We are not leaving anything to chances. So, we have asked the ships to check up,” he said. A few leads found earlier proved

In New Delhi, Indian Air Force (IAF) spokesperson Wing Commander Anupam Banerjee said the search will continue but admitted that there were no signs of the aircraft so far. The plane with 29 people on board went missing shortly after taking off from Chennai for Port Blair. BRIEFS Two alleged IS links under police custody KOCHI: A court here on July 25 sent the two suspected Islamic State sympathizers to police custody till August 8. Arshid Qureshi and Rizwan Khan, who are known to be close to controversial preacher Zakir Naik of the Islamic Research Foundation (IRF), were last week picked up in Mumbai in a joint operation of Maharashtra Anti-Terror Squad along with a team of Kerala Police. “It was Sunday that the two were brought here and they were produced before the court on July 25. Bus strike off in Karnataka IANS, BENGALURU

T MUMBAI: All petrol and diesel retailers stations across Maharashtra have threatened to shut down from August 1 if the state government does not withdraw its recent directive on ‘no helmet-no fuel’ rule for two-wheelers, an association official said on July 27. “For starters, we shall stop buying up or stocking petrol/diesel at the 4,500 pumps in the state, including 500 in Mumbai, from August 1, when the new rule comes into effect,” Federation of All Maharashtra Petrol Dealers Association President Uday Lodh told IANS. FAMPEDA will on July 28 shoot off letters to all the oil marketing compa-

nies of their proposed move to stop buying/stocking the fuel, he added. The decision was taken at a meeting of all the 25 member-associations from the 35 districts in the state which was convened here on July 27 to discuss and review the situation arising out of the new government directive. Besides, the federation will followup the move by petitioning the Bombay High Court to get the rule struck down on various counts, Lodh added. He claimed that the Government Resolution on this count is “wrong” since it expects the fuel retailers to perform law-enforcing duties.

he strike by 1.23 lakh employees of the four staterun road transport corporations in Karnataka was called off after three days on July 25 evening after the state government agreed to increase their wages by 12.5 per cent instead of 10 per cent offered earlier. “We have called off the indefinite strike after the government agreed to increase our wages by 12.5 per cent and consider other demands,” Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation’s workers’ union general secretary H.V. Anantha Subbarao told reporters. Bus services resumed from 6 p.m. in Bengaluru and other cities and towns across the state after the union leaders of KSRTC, NWRTC, NERTC and BMTC advised members to report for duty, providing relief to thousands of commuters who faced harrowing time since July 23 when strike paralysed their movement. “Intra-state and inter-state services have also been resumed to ferry passengers across cities and towns in the state and neighboring

The wage hike will result in an additional burden of Rs. 2,800 crore over the next four years to the exchequer states,” an official told IANS. As the agitated public expressed outrage over the standoff between the state government and the employees through various fora,

including social media, news channels and print media, a climb down by both sides led the unions call off the strike though their demand for 30-35 per cent hike was rejected as untenable. The corporations are reported to have incurred Rs 51 crore loss due to the three-day strike and damage to about 120 buses in stone-throwing incidents across the state. The wage hike will result in an additional burden of Rs. 2,800 crore over the next four years to the exchequer.

‘Kabali’ collects over Rs 200 cr worldwide In India, in its opening weekend, the film minted over Rs 100 crore IANS, CHENNAI

R

ajinikanth-starrer Tamil action drama Kabali on July 26 entered the Rs 200 crore club worldwide and an elated superstar thanked fans and everybody else associated with the film for the grand success. “It’s the fastest south Indian film to rake in over Rs 200 crore at the box-office worldwide in just five days. As July 26, Kabali has grossed Rs 205 crore and this includes the three languages in which the film was released,” trade analyst Trinath told IANS. In India, in its opening weekend, the film minted over Rs 100 crore. “In the domestic market, the film collected a whopping Rs 128 crore from the opening weekend. It’s the best ever opening for a south Indian film,” he said. Directed by Pa. Ranjith, Kabali narrates the story of a gangster’s shot at redemption and how he fights for equal pay rights for Tamils in Malaysia. In a handwritten letter, Rajinikanth extended gratitude to fans, producer Kalaipuli S. Thanu,

BRIEFS: Arjun makes his Tamil debut with ‘Remo’ NEW DELHI: Singer Arjun Kanungo is set to make his Tamil singing debut with the film Remo, which has songs composed by Anirudh Ravichander. The singer, who has given hit singles such as Baaki baatein peene baad and Fursat, will be heard crooning a love song with debutante female singer Srinidhi in the film.

‘‘Hunterrr’ Telugu remake will be bold’ CHENNAI: Actor-filmmaker Srinivas Avasarala, who will play the lead in the yet-untitled Telugu remake of Hindi adult comedy Hunterrr, says the project will be a bold yet emotional film. “People assume it’s an adult comedy but the story and the character has a deeper meaning to it. The remake will be bold, but at the same time equally emotional,” Srinivas said.

From the producer to director to fans and to the media, I thank each and every one of them,” Rajinikanth said. ajinikanth’s presence in the long-awaited Kabali is like the Second Coming. He is no less than God for his fans. How does a

filmmaker cut down the excess bravura of a rabble-rousing entertainer without undermining his image? Unsure of how Rajni’s fans would react to a completely madeover mega-star, director Ranjith finds a middle ground of narration. Kabali is sometimes gritty, often times giddy. The narration is

simultaneously realistic and overthe-top. The messianic image of the mega-star is used here to tap into the actor in Rajnikanth. Like Salman Khan in Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Sultan, we see Rajinikanth in Kabali playing a character, rather than a variation of himself. It’s a welcome change from the norm. A lot of what we see Rajini do in this film echoes Amitabh Bachchan’s Mahaan. Thakur told IANS: “We will study the judgment in detail first and then decide on the future course of action.” His other sister Arpita Khan Sharma hailed the verdict. “Thank you god for always showering us with your grace and blessings. Today is a big day for us... Salman Khan. Thank you to all bhais and the family’s well-wishers for your prayers, support, love and best wishes,” Arpita tweeted. “This wouldn’t have been possible without you.” Salman refrained from commenting on the development.

I don’t copy anyone: Varun IANS, NOIDA,

A

ctor Varun Dhawan, who will next be seen with John Abraham in “Dishoom”, says he prefers to be original than try to copy any other actor. “I actually don’t try to copy anybody. Obviously, I am the youngest in Bollywood. I’ve been brought up during the time of the 1990s films and have watched Salman bhai (Salman Khan), Aamir Khan and Shah Rukh Khan’s movies. Also I have

watched all of John Abraham’s films,” Varun said at a press conference of his brother Rohit Dhawan’s Varun Dhawan directorial “Dishoom” here on Monday. “If you ask me whether I have copied John in ‘Dishoom’, then I will say that it was only one scene where we were wearing orange underwear.” The movie ‘Dishoom’ is set to release on Friday.

BRIEFS Judging ‘Jhalak’ a big responsibility NEW DELHI: Actress Jacqueline Fernandez says donning a judge’s hat for dance reality show “Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 9” is a “big responsibility” for her. Jacqueline will be joined on the judges’ panel by filmmaker Karan Johar and ace choreographer Ganesh Hegde. “It’s a very new and different experience for me. I have amazing co-judges with me and we’re having a lot of fun. It’s quite a big responsibility judging these contestants who are big celebrities.” said Jacqueline. The Colors show, which will go on air on July 30, will feature actors Sidhanth Gupta, Surveen Chawla, Karishma Tanna, Helly Shah and Shakti Arora among others.

‘Love Ke Funday’ set for release NEW DELHI: The forthcoming romantic-comedy film‚“Love Ke Funday‚“, written and directed by Indervesh Yogee, will release in 600 theatres on Friday. The film, made under the FRV Big Entertainment Private Limited banner by producers Faaiz Anwar and Prem Prakash Gupta, is based on the lives and times of today’s college-goers. Shot across various locations in Goa, Mumbai and Kashmir, the film features Shaleen Banot, Rishank Tiwari, Ritika Gulati, Sufi Gulati, Harshvardhan Joshi, Samiksha Bhatnagar, Rahul Suri and Pooja Bannerjee. The story of the film revolves around four couples -- Manan (Rishank) and Jassi (Samiksha); Nikhil (Harshvardhan) and Riya (Sufi); Aryan (Shaleen) and Sona (Pooja); and Sandy (Rahul) and Annu (Ritika).

‘Madaari’: A heartbreaking wake-up call Film: “Madaari”; Director: Nishikant Kamat; Cast: Irrfan Khan, Jimmy Sheirgill, Vishesh Bansal; Rating: ****

T

his is not the first film that raises the burning issue of corruption by espousing vigilantism. But “Madaari” moves you to tears. I had to watch it twice on two successive days to absorb the immensity of Nishikant Kamat treatise that -- and I quote from the film stunning climax -- “Corruption is not part of our political system, our political system exists for corruption”. With brilliant impunity, “Madaari” builds a case for self-justice when all systems collapse and

you’ve nowhere to go but to your conscience to escape the feeling of complete annihilation. One such bereft inconsolable soul is Nirmal Kumar who has lost his son to corruption.Somewhere in the middle of the saga of this one man plea for

justice, we see Nirmal in an emptied-out hospital corridor grieving for his suddenly-dead son. Irrfan makes this moment so effortlessly intense, so brimming with a fluent angst...we are not watching a brilliant actor at work. We are not even watching a father mourn for son demise. No. We sit there watching Irrfan lament for every person who has lost out to an irreversibly corrupt political system. “Madaari” is just a slick cat-andmouse chase saga about a vigilante and a police official (Jimmy Sheirgill, as usual effortless). But scratch the surface. “Madaari” doesn offer a formula to eradicate corruption in politics. But it does tell us why we need to fight back before it too late. — Subhash K. Jha

11th Annual Veggie Fest attracts huge crowds

BY A STAFF WRITER ISLE, IL -- Veggie Fest, one of the largest vegetarian food festivals in North America, was another huge success as over 40,000 people from around the world came to the two-day event held on the grounds of the Science of Spirituality Meditation Center in Lisle, IL. “We’re always inspired by the growing interest folks have in learning about vegetarianism and healthy living,” said Jonathan Kruger, festival coordinator. “We’re thrilled with the incredible turnout at the 11th Annual Veggie Fest in spite of the high temps.” With a huge international food court; health experts speaking on diet, lifestyle and environment; food demos by restaurant owners, chefs, and authors; a children’s tent with face painting, clowns, and crafts; live music from Chicago’s best bands and some 110 vendor booths to explore, Veggie Fest has become a highly anticipated summer event in the Chicagoland area. The terrific sponsors were Whole Foods, Nature’s Path Organics, and Manna Organics, among others. The weekend’s festivities included a special opening ceremony with both Congressman Bill Foster and the Mayor of Naperville, Steve Chirico; The guest speakers were Dr. Terry Mason, MD, Chief Operating Officer, Cook County Department of Public Health; Dr. Kim Allan Williams MD, president, American College of Cardiology,

Teen finishes marathon race in record time BY A STAFF WRITER ARTLETT, IL -- A 13 years young girl Sareena Shah residing in the town of Bartlett, a west suburb near Chicago, participated in an official charity event for Rock n Roll Chicago half marathon race of 13.1 miles held on July 15 in the area of downtown of Chicago city. The Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series makes running fun. Each year, more athletes participate in Rock ‘n’ Roll running events than any other running series in the United States. What started as a simple idea in 1998–a marathon with bands along the course celebrating each participant– soon transformed the running landscape igniting the second running boom. While entertainment and the energy of a festival weekend define the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon series experience, runners have raised more than $310 million for participating charities. Event weekends include a world-class Health & Fitness Expo and culminate with finish line concert featuring the biggest names in music, with past performers including Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Pitbull, Goo Goo Dolls, All-American Rejects, Flo-Rida, Train and Lady Antebellum. In 2014, the Remix Challenge was born, and runners can now earn extra bling by completing two days of running in 11 cities. Runners who participate in multiple cities each year can also qualify for Heavy Medal awards, Limited Edition medals and a coveted spot in Hall of Fame.

Sruthi youngest Indian delegate at DNC BY A STAFF WRITER EDAR RAPIDS, IO -- Eighteenyear-old Sruthi Palaniappan, from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, is the youngest Indian American delegate at the 2016 Democratic National Convention, which began on July 25 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. “It’s so amazing to see the political process first-hand,” says the budding political activist. Palaniappan said she was most inspired by the speeches of Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey and First Lady Michelle Obama. Palaniappan is a precinct captain for Democratic Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. Before the February 1 Iowa Caucus, the senior at Linn-Mar High School organized volunteers to canvass the precinct, knocking on doors to garner support for Clinton. On the day of the Caucus, Palaniappan verified delegates allotted to Clinton, and convinced voters who were still on the fence. Though she was able to convince a number of voters who had not yet decided on whom to support, Palaniappan said she had a tougher time convincing supporters of Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders. Palaniappan’s father--Palaniappan Andiappan--is also attending the DNC, as a member of the credentials committee.

Indian scientist says he falsified data BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL- A cardiovascular researcher has admitted to faking 74 experiments, and more than 100 images, according to a recent report released by the Office of Research Integrity (ORI). Ricky Malhotra, an Indian American who worked as an assistant research scientist at the University of Michigan from 2001 to 2007, then joined the University of Chicago as a research assistant professor until 2011 admitted to falsifying data at both institutions. According to the ORI report, Malhotra falsified data in three grant applications for the National Institutes of Health. He also falsified data in an NIH progress report, one academic paper, and seven presentations. He claimed to have conducted 74 experiments which never happened and also falsified 100 Western blots, which are used to identify specific amino-acid sequences in proteins. Malhotra reused and falsely labeled Western blot gel images. The ORI--a federal watchdog agency-released its findings in two separate actions on May 24 and June 1. The University of Chicago said it became aware of the allegations through a letter from the Division of Investigative Oversight at ORI. Malhotra was not the principal investigator on either of the awarded grants named in the ORI report. One of the grants was for $130,000 per year during 2007, 2008, and 2009; the other was for $390,000 in 2011. Both of those grants were awarded while Malhotra was employed at the University of Chicago. After retracting a paper in the Journal of Biological Chemistry last year, Malhotra told the ORI “he had no intention in applying for or engaging in US. Public Health Service (PHS)supported research.”

Samanvita excels in poetry of footwork BY A STAFF WRITER T LOUIS, MO -- Saint Louis, a Midwest City, which was the eye of storm due to many incidents of racial discrepancies, opened its eye to the beautiful sound of Kathak bells on July 9. This event by a 14-year-old Samanvita Kasthuri, a student of Parkway School district, at its center, created a history by presenting the very first Kathak dance debut (Rang Pravesh) with live music in the state of Missouri. Born into a family of dancers, musicians, authors and Yoga practitioners, dance and music have come easily to the talented young artist who gave her first dance recital at age four. Her long dedication of constant practice and undiminishing interest in learning two forms of classical dance, classical music and classical instrument came to fruition on July 9. She danced brilliantly with extreme grace, alacrity and ease. Trained by her father and Guru Prasanna Kasthuri for the last ten years, she began her Rang Pravesh recital with a Rang Pooja, a salutation to the stage and to the deities of dance. In the opening dance number itself, Samanvita seemed completely in control of her extremely graceful movements, exemplary rhythms and understated expressions, She continued with a couple of small dance numbers praising the god of dancing, Shiva in the form of Nataraja in “Pashunam Pathi and Nataraja Kshitiraja”. The superb dance choreography of Guru Prasanna unfurled as she delicately performed the message of oneness with God and nature. A pure technical number “Shuddh Nritya” followed next proving Samanvita’s prowess and command. Her exceptional grip over rhythm came to the forefront, as

the dancer and the tabla virtuoso – Guru Naren Budhkar - exchanged complicated rhythmic patterns on the tabla and footwork. Samanvita also proved that she had an exceptional flair for enacting a crucial part of Kathak, facial expressions, in the next two lyricals, a bhajan and thumri. Both songs were based on the popular Hindu god Krishna. Guru Prasanna, a student of Guru Maya Rao, one of the greatest dance gurus of India, was reminisced as Samanvita performed the next song Chaturang, (literally meaning 4 parts) expression, rhythm, melody and literature. Story telling was highlighted in the next dance drama, ‘Parvathi Kalyan’. The recital ended with a traditional taraana, a beautiful combination of musical melodies and rhythmic phrases. The dance that began with a slow tempo gradually increased speed and ended with a sawaaljawab(Question-Answer) and a grand tatkar-tihai.

Samanvita was ably assisted by an erudite group of musicians. Senior tabla player, Pandit Naren Budhkar excelled with his brilliant technique. Sitar player Indro Roy Chowdhary music interludes and clever following added color to the evening. Vocals by Divya Khandekar, Dyuthi Kharod and Guru Prasanna Kasthuri himself, Harmonium by Vikas Falnikar and flute by Chethan Anant exemplified the divine experience of the dance debut. The exceptional mega stage banners set an excellent backdrop for all the repertoires, be it the sacred Kailasa Parvatha where Lord Shiva resides according to Hindu belief, or the beautiful Brindavana gardens that once occupied all over India or the Indo-Persian architectural that depicts the amalgamation of two architectures. Added to this were the elegant lobby and stage decorations. The dance performance lasted 180 minutes and was attended by more than 400 art lovers. Many dance gurus graced the event and blessed the new dancing star.

Punjabi Americans have a ball at Teeyan Da Mela BY A STAFF WRITER ELMHURST, , IL – The Punjabi American Organization (PAO) organized its 12th annual, a knockout event, Teeyan Da Mela, on July 24 at Waterford Banquet, 933 S Riverside Dr, Elmhurst, IL. This program was dedicated to Bibi Jaswant Kaur Dhaliwal, mother of Sardar Dhaliwal from Milwaukee. The chief guest was Debra Dhaliwal and the grand sponsors were Debra and Darshan Dhaliwal. The eagerly-awaited event is showcased for “Ladies only” where even very bashful timid ladies have opportunity to come forward and show their hidden talent. Teeyan is an honorable word in the Punjabi culture which gives a great recognition and respect to women as mother, daughter, and daughter-in-law. Teeyan is the dance festival of Punjabis, celebrated by women in the month of Sawan. The PAO aims to promote unity and progress and preservation of age-old rich culture and tradition of Punjab. The main purpose of holding this type “ladies only” annual event is to render house-confined women a setting to bring out their uninhibited talent and give them an opportunity to meet with the community exhibiting their mesmerizing dresses,

She is one of the only persons of Indian origin to serve in leadership at the Democratic National Convention in 2016. The committee met on July 23, and was in session for the bulk of the day. The Rules Committee for the Convention is tasked with setting out the procedures for the convention, as well as electing the convention officers. This particular meeting consisted of some controversy, as many supporters of Bernie Sanders wanted to see many changes. Dozens of amendments were presented, with debate by both sides, at one point against a backdrop of cries of “Unity!” and “Compromise!”. At one point, there was a significant break as the whips from both sides brought everyone together for a position of unity. “The goal of this committee is to develop procedures that reflect the inclusiveness of the Democratic Party--to honor all and exclude none,” noted Vice Chairman Smita N. Shah. “With the work of every committee member, that was accomplished today. Smita Shah is civic and business leader, with a Master of Science in Civil Engineering from MIT. Nitin P. Singh (Pennsville, New Jersey Police Dept. photo)

BY A STAFF WRITER ENNSVILLE, NJ – An Indian American man, suspected of fatally stabbing his wife in the wee hours of July 19 while their three children slept in an adjacent room, has been charged with first-degree murder. Nitin Singh, 46, reportedly stabbed his 42-year-old wife, Seema, multiple times in the kitchen of their Pennsville, New Jersey apartment. Rescue personnel were called to the scene after receiving a call for a reported respiratory emergency. The police arriving at the scene found Seema’s dead body on the kitchen floor. Stab wounds were found on her face, chest and abdomen. Singh himself had made the 911 call for help. According to Pennsville Police Chief Allan Cummings, the police found Nitin standing over the body of his dead wife. Both Seema and Nitin were covered in blood. Cummings said the stabbings appeared to be the result of a domestic dispute between the couple. “This is a very horrific scene,” Cummings said as investigators processed the crime scene. “It’s a situation where there are children involved and they have lost their mother and their father is probably going to be incarcerated.” Nitin Singh has been charged with first-degree murder, seconddegree aggravated assault, fourth-degree unlawful possession of a weapon and fourth-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. He is being held in the Salem County Correctional Facility, Mannington Township, on $1-million full-cash bail. The police took the couple’s three children-- two boys, ages 16 and 6, and a girl, age 5--from the apartment via a side door so they did not see their mother’s body. State protective services workers are currently caring for them. The Singhs have been the longtime owners of the Quick Stop Deli in a nearby town, and also owned the apartment building where the crime took place. Neighbors described Nitin to local media as a quiet, gentle person. This was the first murder in the small town in 20 years. The children, ages 6 to 16, were taken to receive care at the township police station.Authorities said Singh and his wife owned a shop in Collingswood. The Singhs have been the longtime owners of the Quick Stop Deli in a nearby town, and also owned the apartment building where the crime took place since 1998.

MIDWEST / EASTCOAST

FRIDAY, JULY 29, 2016

BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK, NY -- Dr Raj Bhayani from New York on March 27 listened to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Man Ki Baat’. During the speech, Modi discussed about making football popular in India and India hosting FIFA World Cup in 2017. Dr. Bhayani then discussed this with his team members Priyanka Kothari, a wellknown actress and Bhasker Prakash from New Delhi, India. And a historic first-ever concept was born as ‘Football for Nation’ where the Members of Parliament will play football against Bollywood film stars as a charity match. This concept was initiated by actress Priyanka Kothari, supported by Dr. Raj Bhayani as chief organizer and hosted by Bhasker Prakash’s Adhunik Art Gallery. Maneka Gandhi, Cabinet minister for Women and Child Development, was the Guest of Honor. The match was aimed at increasing awareness about the Prime Minister’s Initiative ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao Abhiyan’ and ‘Swacch Bharat Swasth Bharat Abhiyan’ as well as to make football

a popular game all over the country. The proceeds will be donated for these two Abhiyans. The captain of the Parliamentarians’ team was Babul Supriyo, Minister of State for Heavy Industries and Public Enterprise, as also Manoj Tiwari, MP, while the AllStar Football team was led by Abhishek Bachchan and Ranbir Kapoor. Maneka Gandhi released the video about ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ produced by Priyanka Kothari’s production house,

directed by Rajiv Walia, and sponsored by Adhunik Art Gallery. The charity match was won by the All Star Football team, while Ranbir Kapoor played extremely well and helped the team to score the victory. On behalf of the victorious All Star Football team, Ranbir Kapoor was given the Giant trophy by Dr Raj Bhayani and Renu Sharma. Manoj Tiwari, Member of Parliament, received the trophy from Priyanka Kothari and Bhasker Prakash.

Bomb scare: cops rise to occasion BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK, NY -- When a passing driver hurled a flashing, clicking object into their police van in Times Square, it looked like danger to Sgt. Hameed Armani and Officer Peter Cybulski. “Boss, this is a bomb,” he said. But rather than run to safety, Armani hit the gas, determined to get the device away from the crowds. “We’re gonna go, but I’m not going to have anybody else go with us,” he thought. The partners were hailed for their quick-thinking courage on July 21 after the dramatic episode, which evolved into an overnight police standoff with the man suspected of tossing the object, later revealed to be a harmless fake. Armani and Cybulski “put their own lives at risk so that they could save potentially hundreds, if not thousands, of people in Times Square,” Police Commissioner William Bratton said,

N

calling them “heroes of this city.” The driver, whom police identified as Hector Meneses, 52, was taken to a hospital for evaluation. The bomb hoax in one of the world’s

top terror targets came at a tense time for police and communities nationwide, amid anger and anxiety over police killing civilians, gunmen killing police and recent attacks by extremists in Orlando, Florida, and Europe.

Domestic violence case accused faces jail term BY A STAFF WRITER AN FRANCISCO, CA -- Tech mogul Gurbaksh Chahal, on parole for two domestic violence charges, was found guilty of violating his parole on July 22, after evidence emerged that he had attacked another woman. The Indian American executive is scheduled to be sentenced on August 12. He could face jail time or have his parole extended. San Francisco Superior Court Judge Tracie Brown ordered Chahal, 34, to surrender his passports to the court. Also, in a move hailed by local women’s rights organizations, Brown ruled that a 30-minute video, depicting the violence Chahal allegedly inflicted on his first victim, could be shown to determine sentencing.

During the 2014 trial, a judge ruled that the surveillance video was illegally obtained and barred it from being shown during the proceedings.

The founder of RadiumOne was first arrested in 2013, after his girlfriend complained to the police that he had hit and kicked her 117 times in his San Francisco, Calif., penthouse. Chahal was initially charged with 47 felony counts of domestic violence, but eventually entered into a deal with prosecutors, in which he pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor charges of battery and domestic violence. Chahal was forced to step down from RadiumOne after he pleaded guilty to the battery and domestic violence charges. He went on to found Gravity4, an online advertising company. Chahal was sued last year by one of his employees at Gravity4, who has accused him of gender discrimination and illegal surveillance.

BY A STAFF WRITER OMERVILLE, NJ -- Timma Kalidindi, who was found guilty of first-degree murder in the 2013 strangulation of his estranged wife, has been sentenced in Somerset County Superior Court to 55 years in prison. The 50-year-old Indian American must serve 85 per cent of his sentence without parole eligibility. His has 944 days of credit for time already served in jail. Before he was sentenced, Kalidindi, who was facing a minimum of 30 years in prison, professed his love for his wife, Janaki Dantuluru, and asked the court for 15 seconds of silence to honor her. The pair had been married for 22 years. They were separated at the time of her murder, and she had been seeking a divorce. Indira Kalidindi, Dantuluru’s sister, wrote in an impact letter that the family had been traumatized and that members of the family continued to suffer panic attacks and nightmares. Somerville-based defense attorney James Wronko argued for a lesser sentence because his client had diminished capacity due to a mental illness brought on by stress, adding he had no prior arrests. The judge called the crime “heinous, cruel and depraved.” She said it was “premeditated” and will have an “everlasting affect” on the couple’s daughter, who has returned to India to live with her grandparents, because she was at home when it occurred. On November 14, 2013, Kalidindi attacked his then-43-year-old wife in her Bridgewater home during an argument over their impending divorce. Dantuluru died less than two days later as a result of her injuries. Dantuluru had a restraining order against Kalidindi, but he was in her home when the couple’s daughter arrived around 6:30 pm that day. Kalidindi allegedly told his daughter he was angry with her mother and that “only one person was going to survive tonight.” The daughter used Kalidindi’s cell phone to call 9-1-1. When the police arrived, Kalidindi opened the door, dropped to his knees and surrendered. Dantuluru was found unresponsive on the garage floor, without a pulse and not breathing. A rope was wrapped around her neck, according to court documents. Police officers were able to resuscitate her, but she died from her injuries on on November 16.

hildren who experience inadequate or disrupted sleep are more likely to develop depression and anxiety disorders later in life, suggests new research. “Healthy sleep is critical for children’s psychological well-being,” said principal investigator of the study Candice Alfano, Associate Psychology Professor at the Uni-

versity of Houston in the US. “Continually experiencing inadequate sleep can eventually lead to depression, anxiety and other types of emotional problems,” Alfano noted. The findings are based on temporary sleep restrictions in 50 preadolescent children between the ages of seven to 11. Inadequate sleep impacts children’s emotional health not only by creating more negative emotions, but also by

Watching television for long hours may increase death risk TOKYO: Watching a lot of television every day may increase the risk of dying from a blood clot in the lungs, according to new research. A lung blood clot, medically known as a pulmonary embolism, usually begins as a clot in the leg or pelvis as a result of inactivity and slowed blood flow. If the clot breaks free, it can travel to the lungs and become lodged in a small blood vessel. The researchers asked 86,024 participants, aged between 40 to 79 years on how many hours they spent

altering positive emotional experiences, the results showed. For example, after just two nights of poor sleep, children

derive less pleasure from positive things, are less reactive to them and less likely to recall details about these positive experiences

How to get rid of peeling fingertips NEW DELHI: Fingertips are used to carry out day-to-day activities like writing, cleaning utensils, cooking and typing. If they end up peeling, ensure to control anxiety, stay away from the allergen and adopt a healthy lifestyle, says an expert. It is more common in hot weather among young adults and those who sweat a lot. They become red, dry and cracked. They are not itchy. Sometimes the skin splits at the end of fingers. Cosmetic Dermatologist Megha Shah shares a few peeling fingertips management tips: l A detailed history helps in identifying the cause of the peeling fingers. In early cases, maintaining normal hydration helps a lot. In case of excessive dryness, it is advisable to use good liquid paraffin based moisturizer during day time and an emollient during bed time. You can get some relief with home remedies like application of aloe vera. l We mostly see, half of all the diseases do not require therapeutic medications. Proper care, understanding of the condition, avoiding soaps and irritants and removal of the anxiety help to cure skin diseases.

later. When their normal nightly sleep habits are adequate in duration, however, they find these emotional effects are less apparent, the study found. “Parents, therefore, need to think about sleep as an essential component of overall health in the same way they do nutrition, dental hygiene and physical activity,” Alfano said in a University of Houston statement. “If your child has problems waking up in the morning or is sleepy during the day, then their nighttime sleep is probably inadequate. This can result for several reasons, such as a bedtime that is too late, non-restful sleep during the night or an inconsistent sleep schedule,” Alfano pointed out.

non-invasive and inexpensive hearing test may help physicians identify infants with autism risk as researches have discovered that an inner ear deficiency may impact speech recognition ability of children with the disorder. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by impairments in social-communication skills and restricted and repetitive behaviours. Some of the earliest and consistent signs of ASD involve auditory

communication, however, most tests rely on speech, and are often ineffective in children who are very young or who have communication delays. The new findings, published

in the journal Autism Research, could ultimately be used as a way to identify children at risk for the disorder at an early age. “This study identifies a simple, safe, and non-invasive method to screen young children for hearing deficits that are associated with Autism,” said co-author of the study Anne Luebke, associate professor at University of Rochester Medical Centre in New York. “This technique may provide clinicians a new window into the disorder and enable us to intervene earlier and help achieve optimal outcomes,” Luebke noted.
