“war of words” broke out in the US Congress over a new healthcare law replacing former President Barack Obama’s Affordable Care Act or the ‘Obamacare’, the media reported this week. The two House committees began the debate of the two bills comprising the Republican proposal to overturn Obamacare signed in 2010, and replace it with a new plan, thus fulfilling a longstanding Republican promise and policy dream, Efe news reported. The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office has not been able to analyze the content of the lengthy and detailed bills and issue a report on their likely impact, and so Democrats insisted that it was necessary to stymie the proceedings until such an analysis had been made public. The Democrats have been very critical of the new plan, claiming that Obamacare has provided access to health insurance, and therefore healthcare, to over 20 million Americans who did not have it before, and they criticized the Republican plan that, among other things, cuts subsidies for

Trump to dump Obamacare

Indian-American lawmakers slam new immigration order WASHINGTON: Prominent IndianAmerican lawmakers have slammed US President Donald Trump’s new executive travel ban order, saying it “does not make US safe” and it “undermines American values without improving security”. The new order, signed privately by Trump, bans immigration from six Muslimmajority countries, dropping Iraq from the previous order in January, and reinstates a temporary blanket ban on all refugees. The new measures will block citizens of Syria, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen from obtaining visas for at least 90 days. The order also suspends admission of refugees into the US for 120 days, directing US officials to improve vetting measures for a program widely regarded as extremely stringent. It will go into effect from March 16. California Senator Kamala Har-

ris blasted Trump’s order, saying: “This latest attempt by the Trump administration to ban new immigrants and refugees from Muslimmajority countries, like the first attempt, undermines our nation’s core values, jeopardizes our national security, and hurts our economy.” “This ban does not keep us safe. It puts American lives at risk,” she said. “Refugees fleeing war and violence, who have cleared a two-year vetting process, should not arrive in the United States only to have the doors shut,” a report by Times of San Diego quoted her as saying. Congressman Ro Khanna said: “The Trump Administration’s repackaging is merely a second attempt to revise his unconstitutional policy.” Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal said that Trump has recognized his original travel ban was “unconstitutional.”

the anger voters will have toward the policies this plan puts forward.” However, the White House steered clear of putting the President’s personal stamp on the legislation, the magazine said. “We’re not into labels,” White House press secretary Sean Spicer said. Besides, White House counselor Kellyanne Conway insisted that the law should go by its official

name -- the American Health Care Act. The American Medical Association, which bills itself as the largest organization of doctors in the nation, in a letter, detailed its critique of the bill, known as the American Health Care Act that would repeal Obamacare signed in 2010, CNN reported. The American Health Care Act (AHCA) would limit future federal funding for Medicaid, which covers low-income people; abolish the requirement that everyone should be insured; and replace subsidies with tax credits. “While we agree that there are problems with the ACA that must be addressed, we cannot support the AHCA as drafted because of the expected decline in health insurance coverage and the potential harm it would cause to vulnerable patient populations,” the letter stated. Major hospital organizations, including the American Hospital Association and the Federation of American hospitals have also come out against the bill. The AHCA bill is now being considered by two congressional committees ahead of its passage through the House and Senate.

WASHINGTON: The Central Intelligence Agency has refused to confirm the validity of the information on electronic spying techniques made public by WikiLeaks, but it said that disclosures of this kind put Americans in danger. “Such disclosures not only jeopardize US personnel and operations, but also equip our adversaries with tools and information to do us harm,” CIA spokeswoman Heather F. Horniak has said. WikiLeaks, headed by whistleblower Julian Assange, recently posted a series of seven batches of leaks, called “Vault 7” and of which the group entitled “Year Zero” including 7,818 pages with 943 attached files had already been published, Efe news reported. It said that its documents reveal that the CIA has managed to circumvent the security protocols in a wide range of companies and products in Europe and the US.

First Lady Melania Trump’s approval rating soars, says poll IANS, WASHINGTON

U

S First Lady Melania Trump’s approval rating has soared to double digits since her husband Donald Trump was inaugurated as President on January 20, according to a new poll. The CNN/ORC poll released on Wednesday found that 52 per cent of Americans have a favorable view of Melania Trump, an increase from the 36 per cent pre-inauguration. In February 2016, the former model’s favorable rating was a mere 24 per cent, her unfavorable was 31 per cent and 23 per cent had never even heard of her. Now, just 3 per cent say they do not know who the First Lady is, and her unfavorable rate has held steady at 32 per cent, the poll showed. The results fall along party lines; 86 per cent of Republicans view the First Lady favorably, while just 22 per cent of Democrats feel the same. The margin is a lot wider for her Melania Trump than it was for her

predecessor Michelle Obama, who in April 2009 had a favorable rating of 93 per cent among Democrats and 50 per cent among Republicans. According to the poll, men have a more favorable view of her than women. Fifty-eight per cent of men view

her positively, and 46 per cent of women. Michelle Obama’s numbers in that category were dramatically flip-flopped with 78 per cent women and 68 per cent men. Interviews for the CNN/ORC poll were conducted from March 1 to 4, by telephone with 1,025 adult Americans.

suspected Islamic State operative was killed in an anti-terror operation here early on Wednesday and hours later, a National Investigative Agency (NIA) team arrived to take the probe forward. The NIA will look into the items recovered from slain Saifullah’s hideout in Haji colony in Thakurganj area, where he was killed by the Uttar Pradesh Anti Terrorism Squad in a 11-hour-long gunfight. According to police, six pistols of different make, two wireless sets, alarm clocks, steel pipes, an IS flag, two laptops, videos of how to make bombs, four knives, two passports and 600-plus live cartridges were recovered from the site. “We tried our best to capture him alive but were left with no other option,” Inspector General (Special Task Force) Aseem Arun told the media while narrating the details of the incident. Intelligence agencies from two other states had tipped off the police of the likely presence of terror suspects in Lucknow, Kanpur and Etawah after an explosion took place in a train in Madhya Pradesh on Tuesday. The gun battle broke out around 4 p.m. on Tuesday in Lucknow and continued for over 11 hours, concluding early on Wednesday.

Saifullah had contacted his family on Monday last week and told them he was going to Saudi Arabia for a job. “What he has done is not in national interest. We will not the take the dead body of such traitor,” Sartaj told reporters. “A traitor cannot be my son. We are Indians, we were born in India, our forefathers have been born in India. I used to be angry with him, scolded him many times,” he said. “Around two and a half months back, I slapped him for this. Minorities commission:

No new appointments in sight The last of its members had to retire on March 9 and the government has so far not finalized names of the new chairperson and members

MOHD ASIM KHAN, NEW DELHI

T

he National Commission for Minorities (NCM) — an organization that is established to safeguard the constitutional and legal rights of minorities and which was once headed by Hamid Ansari, now India's Vice President — currently has no chairperson and virtually no members. The last of its members had to retire on Mar 9 and the government has so far not finalized names of the new Chairperson and members. Minority Affairs Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, asked about the reconstitution of the Commission, said that it may happen soon. "The process is on. We have received a few names for the members and chairperson which I cannot disclose right now, but it may be done soon," Naqvi told IANS. The NCM has a sanctioned strength of seven members, including the chairperson, with each member having a fixed tenure of three years. Earlier, members Farida Abdulla Khan retired in October last year, while Praveen Davar retired in January this year. Another member, Mabel Rebello, from the Christian community, completed

her term in February 2016. The government did not appoint any new persons to replace the outgoing members. So much so that the last Chairman, Naseem Ahmed, who completed his term on March 3, twice wrote to the Minority Affairs Ministry to fill the vacant posts as the workload was increasing on the remaining members - but not a

thing happened. “I wrote twice to the government about the vacant posts, once during the tenure of Najma Heptulla and once to the present Minority Affairs Minister Mr. Naqvi, besides putting this up verbally with the Ministers now and then. Both the ministers said the matter was being considered, but no new members were ever appoint-

ed," Naseem Ahmed told IANS. As for the importance of the body, a Home Ministry Resolution dated January 12, 1978, specifically mentions that "despite the safeguards provided in the Constitution and the laws in force, there persists among the minorities a feeling of inequality and discrimination". The Ministry felt that to preserve secular traditions and to promote

national integration, "effective institutional arrangements are urgently required for the enforcement and implementation of all the safeguards provided for the minorities in the Constitution". The government set up the NCM under the National Commission for Minorities Act, 1992, though it had to face different pulls and pressures which is a separate story. The body, which enjoys quasijudicial powers, draws members from five recognized minority communities in India – Muslims, Sikhs, Christians, Buddhists and Parsis. Since January 2014, Jains have also been notified as a recognized minority community. "In the last two years, as members kept retiring and no new members came, the workload kept increasing on the serving members. For the Commission to discharge its duties efficiently, it must work at full strength," Ahmed said. "There should be timely induction of members. Not filling vacant posts sends wrong signals," he said. He also advocated the need for the NCM to have an investigation wing with police officers, which other Commissions such as National Commissions for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes have.

Its arrival this year has been announced not only by a respite from winter’s bitter cold and green leaf-buds dotting the barren, frostsmitten countryside, but more so in the hopes and prayers of locals that the season would ensure uninterrupted education for their children, better tourism, trade and, above all, a modicum of normalcy. Bird watchers have traditionally been coming to Kashmir during the spring season in the past,” said an official of the state Tourism Department. The official also said many tourists come to see the serene lakes and roaring mountain streams, while others arrive to simply relax and bask in the soothing spring sunshine. t least 30 persons were killed and 70 injured when three explosions rocked a military hospital here on Wednesday, media reports said. The deaths in the attack on Sardar Daud Khan Hospital, a health facility for wounded army soldiers, has gone up to 30 while at least 70 others were wounded, Tolo News quoted sources in the Ministry of Defense. The attack ended around 4 p.m. (local time) after the three attackers were gunned down by security forces. While the Taliban denied any involvement, the IS claimed responsibility for the attack. Wazir Akbar Khan area, where several government agencies and embassies are located. A suicide bomber detonated his explosives at the main gate of the hospital. Later, four more attackers

entered the hospital premises and then another blast took place. The third bombing came around 10.45 a.m. when army helicopters were hovering over the building. At least five suicide

bombers were involved in the attack. One terrorist was killed in the bombing and two others were shot dead by security forces. President Ashraf Ghani said the attack “trampled all human values”. “In all religions, a hospital is regarded as an immune site and attacking it is attacking the whole of Afghanistan,” Ghani said, the BBC reported. “I saw one of the suicide bombers who wore the doctors’ uniform and opened fire. I managed to escape from the area,” a doctor told Tolo News. Afghanistan’s Chief Executive Officer Abdullah Abdullah also condemned the attack and vowed to “avenge the blood of our people”. Meanwhile, the NATO-led Resolute Support coalition forces said they “stand ready to assist Afghan security services”.

All options on table for Pyongyang: US IANS, UNITED NATIONS

U

S ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley told reporters Wednesday that “all options are on the table” for North Korea after emergency closed consultations of the Security Council on Pyongyang. The US was revaluating how it must deal with North Korea after the country’s repeated missile tests, she said, adding that the US has to see “some sort of positive action” from North Korea before it can take Kim Jong Un’s regime seriously and discuss ways to reduce tensions on

the Korean peninsula, Xinhua reported. Haley joined a joint stakeout with Ambassador Koro Bessho, Permanent Representative of Japan to the UN, and Ambassador Cho Tae-yul, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Korea to the UN. However, US officials dismissed China’s suggestion that North Korea could halt its missile and nuclear test in exchange for a suspension of US military activity in the region, a media report said. The US State Department said on Wednesday that it was not “a viable deal” while its UN Ambas-

Madhesi Morcha threatens to pull out of Prachanda government KATHMANDU: The Madhesi Morcha, an alliance of seven political parties from the Terai region, protesting against the Constitution of Nepal since 2015, has threatened to withdraw its support to the Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’-led government if its demands are not addressed in the next seven days. Top leaders of the Morcha on Wednesday called on Prime Minister Prachanda and handed over a memorandum. During the formation of Prachanda-led government in August last

year, the Morcha had extended its support after reaching a three-point agreement that mostly related to the constitutional amendment process to make the statute Nepal PM Pushpa Kamal more inclusive and Dahal Madhes-friendly. The ultimatum came three days after three Madhesi Morcha cadres were killed by the security men during a fierce clash in Saptari district after a mass gathering.

Brexit bill: British upper house defeats government IANS, LONDON

B

ritain’s upper house, the unelected House of Lords on Tuesday voted to give parliament a veto over the final outcome of Theresa May’s Brexit negotiations, inflicting a second defeat on the government’s article 50 bill. Peers supported a Labour-led amendment by 366 to 268, despite the government’s argument that it would “damage the national interest” by making May’s Brexit negotiations more difficult, the Guardian reported. Michael Heseltine, the Conservative former Deputy Prime Minis-

British PM Theresa May

ter, was one of those leading the rebellion against the government’s position, along with Labour, Liberal Democrat and crossbench peers.

The government had rejected the amendment, saying it would weaken May’s hand by denying her the ability to walk away from the negotiating table, the Guardian added. The Brexit bill will now return to the elected House of Commons with the amendment forcing May to have a vote on her Brexit deal and another guaranteeing the rights of EU citizens. MPs are likely to overturn those amendments, although some Conservative MPs remain unhappy that it is not clear whether parliament will get a vote if May ends up trying to take Britain out of the EU without a deal having been struck.

FBI probes attack on Sikh man The agency helps Seattle city police hunt for an attacker who told a Sikh man to “go back to your own country” and shot him, in the second racial attack on Indians

T

he FBI is helping the hunt by the Seattle city police for an attacker who told a Sikh man to “go back to your own country” and shot him — in the second xenophobic attack on Indians in the past two weeks. India has voiced deep concern and stressed the need to prevent such incidents. The US State Department has also, on behalf of the Donald Trump administration, expressed condolences and said they are working on the case. The 39-year-old victim, a US national of Indian origin, was identified by External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj as Deep Rai. He

received a bullet injury on his arm in the attack. The Indian Embassy in Washington tweeted that Indian envoy Navtej Sarna “conveyed our deep concerns to the US government on recent tragic incidents”. Sarna said that India has “underlined the need to prevent such incidents and protect the Indian community” and the embassy was coordinating with “all agencies concerned to ensure speedy justice”. The Indian embassy said that the “State Department, on behalf of US government, expressed condolences and assured they are working” on it. A statement from the FBI’s Seattle office said the bureau remains “committed to investigating crimes that are potentially hate-motivated”, the Seattle Times reported.

Indo-Canadian denied entry to US TORONTO: An Indian origin Canadian citizen was barred from entering the US and told to get a valid visa, a media report said. Manpreet Kooner, who lives in Candian city of Montreal, said she was turned away at a crossing along the Quebec-Vermont border after a six-hour wait where she was fingerprinted, photographed and questioned before being refused, The Huffington Post (Canada) reported. Kooner said an officer told her that she was an immigrant without a

valid US visa and claimed that the border agent told her, “I know you might feel like you’re being Trumped”. “Unbelievable. Refused entry to M. Kooner the States. Because I’m apparently an Immigrant who now requires a Visa to enter the States. While informing me that I cannot enter the States. The office told me ‘I’ve been trumped’”, she wrote on her Facebook Page.

Indian man assaulted in New Zealand WELLINGTON: An Indian national here has said that he was assaulted, spat at and subjected to a racist tirade during a road rage incident in Auckland city, a media report said. Narindervir Singh said that he was filming from inside his vehicle when the incident happened last

week, reported local news service Newshub. “I gave him a space ... that lady gave me the finger. He was driving that car and now he’s trying to threaten me, giving me bad names,” Singh said in the video, which was being streamed live on Facebook.

Sushma Swaraj has voiced her concern over the racial attack on Sikh man in US.

Sushma Swaraj had tweeted that she has spoken to Sardar Harpal Singh, the father of the victim. “He told me that his son had a bullet injury on his arm. He is out of danger and is recovering in a private hospital,” she wrote. Rai was working on his car in front of his house in Kent city on Friday night when the gunman, described as white and who had his face partially covered, opened fire at him and fled, the police said. “This is a top priority investigation, and we are doing everything possible to identify and arrest the suspect,” Kent Police chief Ken Thomas said, adding that the city of about 120,000 should “be vigilant”. Thomas said the gun shot victim has been discharged from the hospi-

WASHINGTON: Indian-American Congressman Ami Bera has denounced the shooting of a Sikh man in Washington state, which is being investigated by the FBI and the police as a possible hate crime. “This disturbing crime is an outrage that goes against everything we stand for as a nation of immigrants,” Bera said in a statement. “On the heels of the Kansas shooting, crimes motivated by hate are on the rise,” Bera said, reported CNN. “Xenophobia and racisim have no place in America, and we as a nation need to stand up to these hate crimes — starting with the President. Thankfully, the victim is recovering, and my thoughts and prayers are with him and his family,”

US man video-stalks Indians in Ohio IANS, WASHINGTON

M

embers of the Indian community in the US have been alarmed by a video posted on an anti-immigration website, which shows Indian families relaxing in an Ohio park, while a man taking the video accuses them of stealing American jobs, the media reported. The video is titled “Welcome to Columbus Ohio Suburbs — Let’s Take a Walk to Indian Park” and was posed on SaveAmericanITJobs.com. The website is run by 66-year-old computer programmer Steve Pushor, reported BuzzFeed News this week. The video has a running commentary showing men, women and children playing and relaxing in a public park. The description of the video reads “Ohio’s suburban park is occupied by rich Indians”. “These Indians have to be clocking in at $$$150 - 200K plus in salary to live in this area. The clothes they are wearing, the cars

in the parking lot, the expensive baby strollers, ALL pointed to BIG $$,” the narrator said in the video, adding the Americans found it difficult to get IT Jobs. “The number of people from foreign countries blows my mind out here. You see this whole area is all Indian, amazing. It’s an amazing number of jobs have been taken away from Americans. The Indian crowd has ravished the Midwest. It’s a takeover,” the man said.

Pushor told Buzzfeed News that the immigrant visa-holders are a threat to the IT jobs. “What we’re trying to point out is people in Ohio, IT workers and other professional people, have lost their jobs to foreign guest workers. That’s what our point is,” he said. The video has many Indian families worried. It comes after Hyderabad techie Srinivas Kuchibhotla was shot dead last month at a bar in Kansas city. Many people have reacted to the video, some calling it an attempt at starting a racial discord. “As a citizen of this great nation I find this video against the fundamental American values of diversity and equality of all races,” commented a user with a profile name Stem Mentor. “As an American, I apologize for this man’s behavior!,” commented another user. During the entire video, the narrator has used words like “insane”, “hell” and “mad” looking at footage of Indians in the post.

India beat Australia to level series India defeated Australia by 75 runs with a day to spare in the second cricket Test IANS, BENGALURU

S

tar off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin led with a six-wicket haul as India defeated Australia by 75 runs with a day to spare in the second cricket Test at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. Chasing a target of 188 runs, Australia were all out for 112 in their second innings shortly after tea on the penultimate day. India have now levelled the four-Test series at 1-1. The Indians bowled superbly on a pitch which has developed quite a few cracks, making it difficult for batting. Ashwin did the most damage with figures of 6/41. Fast bowler Umesh Yadav displayed excellent speed and swing to return 2/30 while fellow pacer Ishant Sharma and left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja bagged a wicket each. The Australians found it difficult to score against Jadeja who gave away only three runs in his eight overs which included five maidens.

Ashwin is now the most successful bowler in the 2016-17 season with 89 wickets. He is the fastest ever to reach 25 five-wicket hauls, achieving the feat in 88 innings ahead of Sri Lankan great Mutthiah Muralithaaran (100) and legendary New Zealand fast bowler Richard Hadlee (111). The Chennai spinner is also the fastest Indian bowler to take 200 Test wickets in India, reaching the

Saina, Sindhu, Prannoy advance in All England BIRMINGHAM (ENGLAND): Saina Nehwal, P.V. Sindhu and H.S. Prannoy advanced to the second round of the All England Open Badminton Championships which began at the Barclaycard Arena. Meanwhile, Kidambi Srikanth, Ajay Jayaram and the men’s doubles pair of Manu Attri and B. Sumeeth Reddy put up below-par performances to exit the tournament. However, India’s two biggest hopes, Saina and Sindhu won easily in their first round matches. Sixth seed Sindhu eased past Danish Mette Poulsen with a 21-10, 21-11 victory in 29 minutes. In the second round, the 2016 Olympic silver medallist will meet Indonesian Dinar Dyah Ayustine, who moved past Danish qualifier Natalia Koch Rohde 21-19, 22-20. Eighth seed Saina battled past World No.11 and defending champion Nozomi Okuhara of Japan 21-15, 21-14 in 38 minutes. Saina will face

German qualifier Fabienne Deprez in the next round. In the men’s singles category, only Prannoy managed to progress to the second round. keep changing over. That is why we were rotating so we could attack through such short balls.” Indian opener Lokesh Rahul was declared Man of the Match. Having dismissed the hosts for 274 in their second innings, the visitors ran into trouble early in their

second essay as young opener Matt Renshaw was caught behind off Ishant’s bowling. Ashwin trapped the other opener David Warner leg before Umesh was rewarded for his excellent bowling with the wickets of Australian captain Steven Smith and Shaun Marsh. That put the pressure on the visitors and Ashwin rammed home the advantage by sending back Mitchell Marsh and Matthew Wade in quick succession. The Australian batting disintegrated quickly after tea, as they lost their remaining four wickets in just under eight overs. Ashwin bowled Mitchell Starc with one that did not turn too much after pitching before Jadeja got rid of Steve O’Keefe. Peter Handscomb, the last recog-

nized batsman, virtually handed his wicket to Ashwin while attempting a slog before the off-spinner pulled off a caught and bowled attempt just two balls later to dismiss Nathan Lyon and complete the win. The visitors lost their last six wickets for just 11 runs, which is their joint third biggest six-wicket collapse. It was also their joint second biggest collapse against India. Earlier during the morning session, Josh Hazlewood clinched a sixwicket haul as India were dismissed for 274 runs in their second innings. Hazlewood had figures of 6/74 while fellow pacer Mitchell Starc and spinner Steve O’Keefe took two wickets each. Smith stood vindicated as the third umpire reversed the on-field official’s decision and sent Rahane on his way.

Kohli, Smith in DRS controversy IANS, NEW DELHI

I

ndia skipper Virat Kohli’s slamming of Australian captain Steven Smith for apparently seeking the Australian dressing room’s signal for asking for the Decision Review System (DRS) during the second Test in Bengaluru, was fuelled after both the cricket boards and former greats sided with their captains. Kohli and Smith were involved in a heated exchange during Australia’s second innings after Smith was adjudged lbw by the umpire off an Umesh Yadav delivery. Smith appeared gesturing towards the Australian dressing room, apparently seeking advice before deciding whether to invoke the DRS against the umpire’s ruling. That prompted Kohli to challenge Smith, resulting in an altercation between the duo. India won the second Test by 75 runs to level the four-match series 1-1 following a second innings collapse of Australia to a mere 112

runs. There was some respite for the two captains after the International Cricket Committee (ICC) announced that it will not take any action against Kohli and Smith for their actions during the second Test. “The ICC has considered both incidents in the context of this match and concluded it will be taking no further action against either player,” the ICC said in a statement. “The ICC has con-

firmed that no charges have been laid against any player under the ICC Code of Conduct following the second Test match between India and Australia in Bengaluru.” “Specifically in relation to Steve Smith and Virat Kohli, the ICC has considered both incidents in the context of this match and concluded it will be taking no further action against either player,” the statement added.

India, Lanka in sea-fire

Indian fisherman killed at sea as Colombo denies role; India voices ‘deep concern’ IANS, CHENNAI

Killing raised in Lok Sabha

A

21-year-old fisherman from Tamil Nadu was shot dead in Sri Lankan waters igniting tensions in the state but Colombo insisted its Navy was not involved. Six fishermen from Thangachimadam in Ramanathapuram district were fishing near the Katchatheevu islet in the narrow sea dividing the two countries when they were fired at, Indian officials said. One fisherman, K. Britjo, was killed. Another who was injured was warded in a hospital in Tamil Nadu. The others escaped without injuries. As India voiced “deep concern” after the incident, Colombo promised a thorough probe and later said that its naval personnel did not fire at the fishermen. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K. Palaniswami, however, urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to act to curb what he said was Colombo’s “aggression” against innocent Indian fishermen. Katchatheevu is located in the Palk Straits which divides India and Sri Lanka. The sea near the island is rich in marine life, leading to frequent clashes between Indian and Sri Lankan fishermen as well as Navy.

Chief Minister K. Palaniswami urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to act to curb what he said was Colombo’s “aggression”.

In a letter to Modi, Palaniswami urged him “to intervene personally in this sensitive livelihood issue of our fishermen and use all means at the command of the government of India to curb the unacceptable aggressive actions of the Sri Lankan Navy and to protect the life, limb and liberty of our innocent fishermen”. Palaniswami said the Sri Lankan High Commissioner to India should be summoned and told about the strong feelings of the Indian and Tamil Nadu govern-

ments about the unprovoked firing on Indian fishermen. Hundreds of fishermen launched a protest at Rameshwaram in Tamil Nadu, blaming the Sri Lankan Navy for the killing. The dead man had set sail in a vessel with others from Rameshwaram. Sri Lankan Navy spokesperson Lt Commander Chaminda Walakuluge said in Colombo that the Navy personnel had been ordered not to fire at Indian fishermen but to only arrest them if they

entered Sri Lankan waters. Indian High Commissioner Taranjit Singh Sandhu took up the matter with Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe. The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the family of Britjo and Rs 1 lakh for the injured fisherman Saron. The attack comes a day after Palaniswami wrote to Modi seeking the release of 85 fishermen and their 128 boats now in Sri Lankan custody.

NEW DELHI: Members in the Lok Sabha on March 9 raised the issue of the killing of an Indian fisherman allegedly by the Sri Lankan Navy, and sought action from the government. Raising the issue in the lower house, AIADMK leader M. Thambidurai said the fishermen community was in “shock” over the killing. He also said that Indian fishermen are regularly troubled by the Sri Lankan Navy who at times also take away their fishing equipment. The AIADMK member also urged the central government to resolve the issue around the Katchatheevu island, which was ceded to Sri Lanka. Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said urgent action needed to be taken for the fishermen community who are losing their livelihood as the fish catch close to the shore was depleted, and the fishermen are forced to go into deep waters. “Fish stock near the shore has depleted, so fishermen go into deep waters. Modernization of fishing infrastructure is urgently required,” he said.

uspended Delhi University Professor G.N. Saibaba and four others have been sentenced to undergo life imprisonment by a Maharashtra court for their links with Maoists. The Gadchiroli Sessions Court also handed out 10-year jail term to their sixth accomplice. The wheelchair-bound English teacher of Ram Lal Anand College in Delhi, Saibaba, 47, with 90 percent disability, was arrested in May 2014 from his home in the capital by Maharashtra Police’s Anti-Naxal Operations (ANO) unit. The court noted that the accused had conspired “to create violence, cause public disorder and spread disaffection towards the central government and the state government”. Judge S.S. Shinde convicted Saibaba under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and found him and his associates guilty of conspiring and being a member of the terrorist outfit, as well as of

offences relating to support given to the Left extremism rebels. Saibaba was in April last year granted bail by the Supreme Court and exempted from personal appearance on the grounds of his deteriorating health. Besides the DU teacher, the court also sentenced to life Jawaharlal Nehru University student Hem Mishra, former journalist Prashant Rahi, Mahesh Tirki, and Pandu Narote. Vijay Tirki will serve a 10-year term.

Saibaba came under police scanner after the JNU student confessed that he was acting as a courier between the professor and Maoist leaders, including Puppalla Laxman Rao alias Ganapathy. The prosecution contended that Mishra, Tirki and Narote went into the deep forests of Gadchiroli in Maharashtra to meet Narmada Akka, a top Maoist commander, who handed over Rs 500,000 to be delivered to Saibaba to propagate Maoist ideology.

‘We stand with Dhanush’

hanush's sister Vimala Geetha says her family is undergoing a lot of agony over an elderly couple's claims that Dhanush is their long-separated son. But she says no matter what, the family is united and will fight the case. Dhanush was also upset after a few private pictures of his were leaked online. Recently, Vimala, a dentist by profession, wrote a moving Facebook post which was then deleted. She wrote: "For the past few months, our family is going through so much pain and agony because of various issues and we all kept quiet. We belong to a very poor family and one man with his hard work and sacrifice gave us food, education and everything we have now. "From a small village in

Iravu Ettu Mani, about demonetization woes, went on the floors earlier this week. The film will feature Vidharth in the lead, and will be predominantly shot in Chennai and Puducherry. "The story will be based on the events following demonetization announcement. It will be a satirical drama. The makers are on the lookout for an elderly character. If they don't find anyone suitable, Bharathiraja sir might take up the role," a source from the film's unit told IANS. The source went on to add that

this what an actor who tortures himself so much to entertain his fans and people of Tamil Nadu deserves?" she asked. Talking about how Twitter is being abused by some, she said: "Twitter has become a media where anyone can talk anything or post anything and it's disheartening to see cheap, fake porn videos on a platform where even a 12-year-old has accounts! And the worst thing is the number of people who ask for such perverted videos." She said her family will stay united. After writing the post, Vimala deactivated her Twitter account. "Not in a state to talk to anyone or see anyone. Whoever is doing this, stop it. You cannot bring back someone if they go to the extent of killing themselves, particularly women. Please live and let live. God bless and goodbye for a while," she wrote.

the shoot will be completed in flat two months. Rathnakumar has penned the story, while Saalai Sahadevan will crank the camera. "Talks are going on with Ilayaraja sir. He might come on board as composer. Nothing has been finalized yet," he said.

CHENNAI: Filmmaker S.S. Rajamouli has said that megastar Chiranjeevi has not lent his voice in Baahubali: The Conclusion — the second part in the franchise — which is due for release on April 28. "Chiranjeevi giving voice-over for Baahubali 2 is false news," Rajamouli tweeted. Busy with the post-production, the makers are working on the film's trailer which is likely to be released later this month. Made on a scale that will supersede the first part, Baahubali 2 will finally shed light on why Kattappa killed Baahubali. The story is about two brothers fighting for an ancient kingdom.

She says filmmaking has been on her mind for a long time and didn't happen overnight. "I didn't take this decision overnight. It's a dream I have been nurturing for a long time. Even though it's a women-centric subject, it's a story everybody can relate to. The story of some women dancers can be very inspiring," she said. Happy with the way the project has shaped, she said Dhanush's contribution has made it very special. "He crooned a romantic number. It was so sweet of him to oblige to my request and sing. The film mostly features newcomers and I enjoyed working on the project," she said.

‘Commando 2...’: A frothy laidback entertainer

T

his is the second edition of this action thriller franchise, the first being released in 2013. In this edition, after the arrest of India’s most wanted black money launderer, Vicky Chaddha in Malaysia, Captain Karanvir Singh Dogra, the Commando of the Special Cell, is assigned to accompany the police team to bring him back to India. While the narrative begins with the recent demonetization issue, it ends up with how the black money could help the poor deprived farmers of our land. The tale follows Karan as he uses his brain and brawn in planning, crossing and double crossing. The plot is pretentiously complex and convoluted with politicians, businessmen and the police involved. For example, during the investigation, when Karan wanted to identify a particular church, the investigating team take the complex process of increasing the sound frequency of the video and then get into the process of cleaning the screen to identify a McDonald logo. The entire process seemed conceited and complex. For a layman, the simple process of zooming into the pic-

ture to identify the tiles laid on the church floor, would have sufficed. There are many such moments like these where the film seems to have a crush on its own ludicrousness and is determined to keep the buzz going by never allowing the audience to look or think long

enough to poke holes. Tone is everything. The film is as knowingly unreal as some of the best early 1990s action classics. Like those films, this one is essentially synthetic with a body count. The director has the knack for setting up preposterous action scenes

and then cutting away from them so quickly that you can’t help but chuckle in disgust. Also in between a serious action sequence, when Karan asks his team members, “Tum sab theek ho?” What does he expect them to answer... and of course they are. As for the action sequences, there are plenty, and they suffer the same fate. Karan just crashes through his universe, punching, kicking, displaying his parkour stunts and shooting himself and everyone that stand in his way. And if you think that Commando 2 is all about action and nothing else, then you are wrong. There is a plethora of lip locks and for some lighter moments, there is Bhavana Reddy, the encounter specialist, who mouths her dialogues with a Hyderabadi twang. She is used for slapstick effect throughout.

that 3 per cent, finding her mix of heritage in a donor is very challenging, the email said. The fourth grader is battling leukemia, and doctors believe her best chance at recovery is a bone marrow transplant. She was first diagnosed in kindergarten and went into remission in third grade. During this school year, Anya began complaining of pain again, and, on January 11, doctors diagnosed her with relapsed leukemia. After trying chemotherapy, doctors began treating Anya with a new investigational immunotherapy drug. She will need a bone marrow transplant afterward, and her parents are asking people to sign up as donors through DMKS, a bone marrow donation registry.

Indian doc accused of $13.3-m fraud BY A STAFF WRITER EXARKANA, TX -- An Indian American physician in Louisiana has been accused of fraud by a bank, by illegally obtaining $13.3 million in loans and then trying to walk away from paying back. MidSouth Bank of Lafayette has asked a bankruptcy court judge not to allow Dr. Hiren Patel, owner of the Arkansas Convention Center & Holiday Inn in Texarkana, to walk away from a $13.3-million debt he owes the bank. The bank said Patel “did knowingly and fraudulently … make a false oath or account” when he obtained the loans, the bank said in an August filing in US Bankruptcy Court in Texas. It asked the bankruptcy court judge to deny a discharge of the debt. Between May 2010 and September 2013, the bank made a series of loans to Patel’s companies to build and furnish the Country Inn & Suites in Texarkana, Texas, and the convention center and hotel project on the Arkansas side of the city.

At the end of March 2016, $13.3 million was still owed on the loans. The bank said that instead of using the money for the properties as required, Patel

transferred at least $1.3 million to his other companies or to his father, Dineshchandra Patel, who has an ownership interest in his son’s companies.

Suspect in lawyer’s murder still at large BY A STAFF WRITER ORTHBROOK, IL -- The police have announced that an arrest warrant has been issued in a suburban lawyer’s killing, more than three months after his body was found strangled in a Northbrook office building. The warrant for first-degree murder was issued for 50-year-old John G. Panaligan, of Aurora in connection with the death of Jigar Patel, according to the Northbrook police. Patel, 36, was found dead in his office around 7:30 pm on December 7 in the 13400 block of Shermer Road. An autopsy determined he died from strangulation and his death was ruled a homicide, the Cook County medical examiner’s office said. The police said on March 6 that Patel was the attorney suing a health care business owned by Panaligan called Vital Home Healthcare. Patel’s killing is believed to be an isolated incident and authorities said there was no threat to the community. The Northbrook department is working with US Marshals to locate Panaligan. The warrant is the latest update in the case

N

after the police released surveillance images to the public, showing a man in a tan trench coat, with a black hat and possibly a surgical mask covering his face in the office building the same day Patel’s body was discovered. The man is also seen walking with a cane. Tenants in the suburban office building said the man “definitely knew what he was doing” and managed to keep his face from being captured on security cameras throughout the building.

They said they believed Patel was expecting to meet with a new client that afternoon, and others who would normally be in the building during that time happened to be out of the office the afternoon he died. Northbrook Police and the North Regional Major Crimes Task Force are investigating the homicide. Anyone with information on the homicide should call Northbrook police at (847) 564-2060.

BY A STAFF WRITER RICK, NJ -- A suspect was arrested on February 25 and charged with the murder of Trupal Patel, a 29-year-old Indian American resident of Brick, New Jersey. Joseph Villani, 20, a resident of nearby Ocean Township, New Jersey, has been charged with first-degree murder, first-degree felony murder, first-degree robbery, and two counts of unlawful possession of a firearm. If convicted of all charges, Villani could spend 50 years in prison. New Jersey law requires that a felon must serve at least 85 per cent of his sentence. Patel was reported missing by relatives who called Asbury Park, New Jersey Police on February 9. A car he had been driving prior to his disappearance was found abandoned in Asbury Park that same day. A Monmouth County Park Ranger found Patel’s body in Shark River Park on February 22 morning while collecting litter in the area. Officers from the Wall Township, New Jersey Police Department were summoned to the scene and, with help from neighboring police departments, identified the dead man as Patel. The Monmouth County, New Jersey Prosecutor’s office said in a statement that Patel’s murder occurred at a home in Ocean Township. Nine months before his death, Patel was arrested with two others for possession of over four pounds of marijuana and an ounce of psilocybin mushrooms, an illegal hallucinogenic drug. The police also found $61,000 in cash. Patel was charged with possession of marijuana and other drugs. Bail was set at $150,000 cash. One of his cohorts was released on his own recognizance while the other was released on $30,000 bail. Patel also had an outstanding warrant.

Story of a five centuries-old Indian rhino finds artistic depiction in New York

New York-based artist Walton Ford

‘Loss of the Lisbon Rhinoceros’, 2008 by Walton Ford, watercolor, gouache, pencil, and ink on paper

BY MAYANK CHHAYA HICAGO, IL: Over five centuries after a rhinoceros was gifted by Sultan Muzafar II, the ruler of Cambay (Khambhat), Gujarat, to Alfonso de Albuquerque, the governor of Portuguese India, a woodcut of the beast is part of a Sotheby’s auction in New York. The woodcut of the rhino dated 1515 by the German painter Albrecht Dürer is one of the works in the auction titled Naturalia. The woodcut has a fascinating story behind it about its India connection in general and Gujarat connection in particular. The story goes that Albuquerque sent envoys to the sultan to seek permission to build a fort on the island of Diu sometime in 1514. While Muzafar did not grant the permission to the Portuguese envoys, in keeping with the customs of the court, gifts were exchanged between the host and the guests. A rhino, which was a part of the sultan’s menagerie, was one of the royal gifts. Albuquerque decided to send the exotic gift to King Manuel I of Portugal by sea. The ship carrying the rhino among other things

C

arrived in Lisbon May 20, 1515 after a 120day voyage. It is not clear how but the rhino survived the voyage despite its attendant roll and pitch. Myths abounded about rhinos in Europe in the 15th and 16th centuries since it had not been seen directly since the Roman times. The painter, Dürer had no particular reference to the animal other than some vague visual idea. Dürer was among the pioneers of natural history art who created many finely detailed drawings. After being unloaded at Lisbon, someone sketched the Indian rhino, which along with an accompanying description reached Dürer as part of his correspondence. The sketch as well as the description gave Dürer the idea of the Indian rhino being sort of armorplated with many folds in its thick hide. He combined his knowledge of natural history painting and the sketch and its description to create his woodcut. As the New York-based artist, Walton Ford says in his interview with Sotheby’s, “This was the first image of an Indian rhino in Europe.” The woodcut was of course an

approximation since rhinos were not seen in Europe for centuries. Ford points out that Dürer’s woodcut looks more like a crustacean than an actual rhino. That woodcut, which was born courtesy of the real-life rhino, which traveled from Khambhat to Lisbon, now adorns the Sotheby’s catalogue for auction. The story of the sultan’s rhino did not end in Lisbon. According to some historical accounts, King Manuel I arranged a fight between the rhino and one of the elephants in his menagerie to test the fabled rivalry between the two giants of India. Apparently, alarmed by all the hollering from the audience waiting for the fight, the elephant fled the ground. Soon afterwards, the Portuguese king decided to gift the rhino to the Medici Pope Leo X to extract some return favors out of him. The beast was sent by ship to Rome in December 1515. En route it had a brief stopover near Marseille because King Francis I of France wanted to see it. Eventually, as it set off for Rome a tragedy struck the vessel it was traveling on near Porto Venere. The vessel sank along with the rhino which was in shackles. It could not free itself and swim. The carcass was recovered and the hide returned to Lisbon for taxidermy purposes. A little over 500 years hence two

The Rhinoceros, Woodcut, 1515 by Albrecht Düre

representations of the same beast done, five centuries apart, one by Dürer and the other by Ford, resurrect it in a way. Ford’s 2008 watercolor, gouache, pencil, and ink on paper is a far more dramatic and realistic depiction of that particular Indian rhino. It shows the animal in chains on the deck of the ship even as water gushes over it. Ford has painted it life size in order to create the effects of what it might have felt standing next to the rhino on a drowning vessel. It is as if for the rhino things are coming full circle over five centuries after it was a major attraction in the menagerie of Sultan Muzafar I and then to travel thousands of miles to Europe only to die a watery death, chained and shackled.

Tightening of H1B visa regime and growing nervousness among Indian tech companies and professionals BY MAYANK CHHAYA HICAGO, IL: The suspension of the fast-track processing of the H1B visas, of which Indian professionals are the biggest beneficiaries, is expected to hit both the US Citizenship and Immigration Services’ (USCIS) budget and tens of thousands of applicants awaiting approval. The USCIS has announced that starting April 3, it will suspend “premium processing” of the H1B visas for up to six months. Companies have for years preferred the premium processing option to expedite the visa applications by paying an extra fee of $1225 per application for a response within 15 days rather than having to wait for several months. That fee has earned the USCIS hundreds of millions of dollars that very significantly funds the agency’s operations. It is not entirely clear whether the temporary suspension is part of the Trump Administration’s plan to slow down immigration and enforce its policy of the hiring of American professionals first. It is highly unlikely that the USCIS would of its own volition consciously get rid of such an important source of its budgetary requirements.

C

The agency in its official announcement explained the temporary suspension thus: “This temporary suspension will help us to reduce overall H-1B processing times. By temporarily suspending premium processing, we will be able to process long-pending petitions, which we have currently been unable to process due to the high volume of incoming petitions and the significant surge in premium processing requests over the past few years; and prioritize adjudication of H-1B extension of status cases that are nearing the 240 day mark.” However, those who follow the H1B debate say that the suspension could well be part of the tightening of visa regime as part of President Donald Trump’s much promised

approach towards favoring American workers over immigrants ones. The USCIS said individuals can still avail of expedited processing as long as they meet certain criteria including humanitarian reasons, emergencies and severe financial loss to a company or person. The criteria also include “nonprofit organization whose request is in furtherance of the cultural and social interests of the United States and Department of Defense or national interest situation.” The suspension will apply to all petitions filed for the fiscal year 2018, both for regular cap as well as the master’s advanced degree cap. Indian technology and other professionals, who often constitute more than 70 percent of the H1B petitions will be the hardest hit because of the suspension. The H1B regime current allows 65,000 professionals a year in addition to 20,000 more from among those who earn their advanced college degrees in the United States. Indians also often constitute a significant portion of those 20,000. Apart from the temporary suspension, there are clear signs of trouble hovering over the H1B visas in the form of the High-Skilled

Integrity and Fairness Act of 2017, a bill introduced by Representative Zoe Lofgren (D-California). The proposed act, according to the Congresswoman’s official press release, “would curtail abuse of the program which has allowed replacement of American workers by outsourcing companies with cheaper H-1B workers. In several recent incidences, highprofile U.S. employers including Disney, Southern California Edison, and most recently the University of California San Francisco, have made news in this manner.” “My legislation refocuses the H-1B program to its original intent – to seek out and find the best and brightest from around the world, and to supplement the U.S. workforce with talented, highly-paid, and highly-skilled workers who help create jobs here in America, not replace them,” Lofgren said. “It offers a market-based solution that gives priority to those companies willing to pay the most. This ensures American employers have access to the talent they need, while removing incentives for companies to undercut American wages and outsource jobs,” she said.

Bal Vihar of St Louis students’ interfaith mural BY A STAFF WRITER T LOUIS, MO – “Today life must be characterized by a sense of Universal responsibility, not only nation to nation and human to human, but also human to other forms of life”, said the great Dalai Lama. This is exactly what young students of Bal Vihar of St Louis did on February 26. They joined the youth of other faiths (Christian, Jewish, Muslim) through Interfaith Quest, and then opened up a dialogue about their religions. They then worked together to build a mural made entirely of canned food under the supervision of teacher Shoba Shekar. ‘United We Grow’ was the theme of this year’s ‘canstruction’ project to signify that by working together we can all flourish and live in a better world together. By openly discussing what each of their faiths teaches about caring for their neighbors, caring for the earth, and feeding the hungry, the students were able to enrich their understanding of other cultures and members of their community. This is the fourth year that Bal Vihar,

also known as the Center for Indian Cultural Education, Interfaith Quest and the St. Louis Science Center have partnered to make this community service project a reality. The structure will be on display at the St. Louis Science Center through March 31 in the Grow Pavilion. The entire mural made of over

2000 cans sits 8 feet high and 11 feet wide. It was made possible by donations from families of Bal Vihar and local faith institutions. When the structure is disassembled, the cans will be donated to Operation Food Search who serves the St. Louis metro area food pantries.

Happier days soon for dependent spouses BY A STAFF WRITER TLANTA, GA -- South Asian American organizations have welcomed the introduction of a federal immigration form that allows some immigrant domestic violence survivors to apply for independent employment authorization, enabling them to escape abusive relationships. The organizations included the South Asian Bar Association of North America (SABA), Apna Ghar, Inc., and Raksha, Inc.. The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) had recently issued Form I-765V, “Application for Employment Authorization for Abused Nonimmigrant Spouse,” which is confidential, preventing the abuser from learning of the application and allowing the applicant to seek safety and independence. The publication of this form fulfils a regulatory pledge made over 10 years ago and contrasts with many recent anti-immigrant actions that have undermined America’s historic leadership in offering sanctuary to refugees and other vulnerable immigrants. Many immigrant domestic violence survivors are dependent on the immigration status of their abusive partner and are forced to remain in abusive relationships, because current regulations do not permit the survivors to work, thereby denying them the means to support themselves.

A

Section 814(c) of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) of 2005 was intended to address this problem, amending the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) to provide eligibility for employment authorization to certain abused spouses of non-immigrants admitted under 15 separate immigration categories. More than 10 years later, the final rule implementing this section has now become effective, and the application form was published on January 19, 2017. Applicants using the new Form I-765 must provide evidence of their lawful entry, their marriage to the abuser (or, if divorced, that the divorce took place within the last two years and was connected to the abuse), the abuser’s status (or, identifying information that will allow USCIS to confirm the status), and that the applicant has been battered or

subjected to extreme mental cruelty. If the form is approved, employment authorization will be granted for two years and can be renewed under certain circumstances. Aparna Bhattacharya, executive director of Raksha, Inc. explained the significance of the new form. Previously, many survivors were forced to choose between working under the table to support themselves, going back to their abuser or depending on the generosity of community members if they left their abusers. These less than ideal options have often led to further victimization of these survivors by employers, family members and community members. Although the approval of employment authorization does not change the immigration status of the applicant or resolve broader problems with the immigration system, the ability to work offers hope to dependent spouses who were otherwise stuck in abusive situations because they could not afford to leave. Raksha applauded the expansion and encouraged Congress and the Administration to continue to expand protection under VAWA to non-immigrants as well as immigrants. “We renew our call for comprehensive immigration reform that is consistent with America’s history as a nation of immigrants and views immigrants as an asset and not a threat to the United States”, said Bhattacharya.

BY A STAFF WRITER ENO, NV -- Balwinder Singh, a 41-year-old Indian American, was sentenced on March 7 to 15 years in a US prison after he pleaded guilty to conspiring while living in northern Nevada to plot terror strikes in his home country on the border with Pakistan. US District Judge Larry Hicks in Reno also ordered Singh, a citizen of India but has a US permanent residence card, or green card, to remain under lifetime federal supervision upon his release from prison after prosecutors argued that he has had ties to known terrorist groups in India for more than two decades. Assistant US Attorney Brian Sullivan said he expects Singh to be released in about 10 years, given that he’s already served about three years and likely to earn credit for good time. Following his prison term, a federal immigration judge will determine whether Singh will be deported. Defense attorney Michael Kennedy said Singh was beaten and tortured by Indian government officials in the past and never posed a threat to the United States. He argued any post-release supervision should be limited to five years. FBI Special Agent Aaron Rouse of Las Vegas said the plot was foiled after a co-conspirator was arrested trying to board a flight in San Francisco bound for Bangkok, Thailand, with two sets of night vision goggles purchased by Singh at a Cabela’s sporting goods store in Reno. Sullivan said it’s possible Singh still will be extradited to India where he faces criminal charges in connection with a terror attack on a passenger bus that killed three people in India in April 2006. Singh, who has been jailed since his arrest in December 2013, agreed to the terms of the plea agreement in exchange for dropping a series of other charges, including conspiracy to murder, kidnap or maim persons in a foreign country. “My only request is I should not be deported. I should be released here,” Singh told the judge through a Punjabi interpreter. Pr o s e c u t o r s i n t h e Ju s t i c e Depar tment’s counter terrorism section say Singh worked with two terrorist organizations--Babbar Khalsa International and Khalistan Zindabad Force--to try to establish an independent Sikh state in the Punjab region. Daniel Bogden, US attorney for Nevada, said Singh sought asylum in San Francisco using a false identity to elude Indian authorities and eventually obtained a permanent residence card in the US.

Doctor couple donates $1 million to hospital BY A STAFF WRITER IMI VALLEY, CA -- Thanks to a donation of $1 million by the family of Dr. Ushakant Thakkar, the Simi Valley Hospital was able to expand its campus. The hospital on March 2 celebrated the opening of the Thakkar Family Emergency Pavilion. The expansion project was a $41-million endeavor with the Thakkar family making the most sizeable donation. The pavilion is named after the Indian American nephrologist and his wife Dr. Irma Harriman whose donation was the springboard to the fundraising effort for the project. The pavilion, the largest element of the project, adds roughly 5,500 square feet to the existing emergency department and increases the number of patient rooms by 12, from 10 to 22. Thakkar is the founder, CEO and president of the Kidney Center, Inc., and focuses his practice in Simi Valley; he is the medical director of the Kidney Center of

BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK, NY-- An Indian American couple in New York, Nisha and Mohit Sabharwal, have been accused by Shelley Rubin, a prominent Manhattan philanthropist, of swindling her out of $18 million. In a recently-filed lawsuit, Rubin alleges that the Sabharwals duped her into buying supposedly “museum quality” diamond- and emerald-encrusted jewels that were actually cheap knockoffs commonly found in tourist bazaars. The suit filed by the philanthropist, who spent $100 million to co-found the Rubin Museum of Art in 2004, calls the case one that is “grounded in fraud,”says the lawsuit filed in Manhattan Supreme Court. The Chelsea museum specializes in art from the Indian subcontinent. The Sabharwals allegedly masqueraded as members of their country’s political elite with connections to its royalty, according to court papers. According to the suit, Sabharwal allegedly claimed to have access to a princess descended from a historically prominent family in India. Rubin believed she was getting deals on jewelry, such as spending $470,000 on a piece believed to be $1 million only to find out it was worth a mere $14,000. After going on a five-year multi-million dollar spending spree, the philanthropist uncovered the alleged scam in 2015 when having the pieces appraised for insurance purposes. The couple sheltered their “ill-gotten gains” in a Florida company and then used the proceeds to invest in real estate, the suit says.

He had locked up his nearby store less than 10 minutes before he was found dead.

Women prefer men to make first move IANS, NEW DELHI

I

f it’s dating, it’s men first and not ladies, reveals a survey. Matchmaking service www.shaadi.com has conducted a survey of single women to understand their view on making the first move in relationship. The online poll received over 8,600 responses from single or unmarried Indians aged between 25 and 32. There were 49 per cent women (4,214) and 51 per cent men (4,386).

When unmarried Indians were asked “Would you ever make the first move in a relationship?”, as many as 70.2 per cent women said ‘No’, 19.3 per cent said ‘Yes’ and 10.5 per cent said ‘Maybe’. These numbers are different for men. About 90 per cent said ‘Yes’, only six per cent said ‘No’ and four per cent said ‘Maybe’. When the women were asked “Why Not?”, 50.3 per cent said ‘Fear of being labelled’, 15.7 per cent said ‘Fear of rejection’ and 34 per cent said ‘Want men to ask

first’. When women were asked “How do you think men will react?” 45.2 per cent said ‘Men will judge’, 34.7 per cent said ‘He won’t believe’. When the same women were asked “What are the benefits of making the first move?”, 35.1 per cent of them said ‘Will get to

choose my partner’, 23.7 per cent said ‘Won’t need to wait’. Gourav Rakshit, CEO, Shaadi.com, said in a statement: “While women stand shoulder-toshoulder in all fields, in relationships they still wait for the man to make the first move.”

NEW DELHI: Actress Alia Bhatt will take to the ramp to showcase a creation by designer Namrata Joshipura at the Amazon India Fashion Week Autumn/Winter 2017. She is “super excited” about it. Alia will be the showstopper for Joshipura’s show, sponsored by beauty brand Maybelline New York. “This is the first time I am walking the ramp for Maybelline New York and I am super excited to finally be doing this. We’re definitely going to create some drama at fashion week and what better way to do it, than with some gorgeous make-up,” Alia said in a statement. “I’ve already had lengthy conversations with team Maybelline on the final look for the show and I can’t wait to make this happen,” she added. Pooja Sahgal, General Manager of Maybelline New York - India, said Alia is the right choice as showstopper as she “has carved her own niche in the industry and is an extremely successful and versatile actor, with a dynamic personality”. “She is truly capable of pulling off any look and fits effortlessly into any role she takes on.” “We strongly believe that Alia will bring just the right amount of drama and glamour to the runway and are looking forward to a successful show,” Sahgal added of the actress, who has pulled off myriad roles in films like Highway, Udta Punjab and 2 States. —IANS

Shield your skin and hair this Holi Few tips to keep in mind while buying gujiya for Holi IANS, NEW YORK

NEW DELHI: It is important for you to check if gujiya that you are buying to celebrate Holi is fresh. Buying the gujiyas, the special sweet for Holi, only from a licensed retailer and checking hygienic standards are some factors that you need to look into, says Saurabh Arora, founder of Food Safety Helpline, and a doctorate in pharmaceutics from Jamia Hamdard University, lists down some tips to

keep in mind while buying gujiyas. * Some sweet shops advertise use of ‘pure’ ghee to make gujiyas but it might actually be adulterated with vanaspati, or refined oil. Therefore, make it a point to buy gujiyas only from a licensed retailer and which you frequent often. * Also, check to see that the shop has good hygienic standards and whether the gujiyas have been stored appropriately inside —IANS showcases.

each out for oil therapy, dress up smartly and follow the no-synthetic rule to shield your skin and hair from the harsh effects of Holi colors, says dermatologist and skin care expert Meghna Gupta shares a few tips: * You may avoid washing your hair before playing Holi, thinking it will anyways get dirty. But when the pre-dirt mixes with colors, it can further damage your hair, making it rougher and vulnerable to breaking. So wash and condition your hair well before playing with colors. * Do not forget to apply sun-

screen before playing Holi as it is really easy to get tanned while playing outdoors. * The synthetic colors available in the market may contain harmful

chemicals and even glass particles. It is highly advisable to take steps that will minimize your skin’s direct contact with colors. Applying a thick coat of oil on your skin and hair is a good way to do this. Lather yourself in oil an hour before stepping out. Don’t miss out on places like behind your ear, between finger wedges and near your finger nails. * Use safe, non-toxic and natural colors as far as possible. A good option is to make colors at home. You can use dried and powdered fruits and vegetables and their peels, and mix them up with talcum powders.

Soy may up survival in breast cancer patients SYDNEY: Eating dietary soy products may be safe as well as beneficial for some women diagnosed with breast cancer, new research has found. Soy foods are considered among the healthiest for human consumption, but their estrogen-like properties — found in isoflavones — previously raised concerns of a potential increase in the risk of breast cancer. But, the new findings showed soy foods not only prevent breast cancer but also benefit women who have breast cancer. Women with breast cancer who consumed high amounts of isoflavones had a 21 per cent lower risk of dying than women who consumed low amounts. “Our findings suggest that survival

may be better in patients with a higher consumption of isoflavones,” said Esther John from the Cancer Prevention Institute of California — a US-based non-profit organization. Further, the effect was largely confined to women with hormone receptor-negative tumors and women who were not treated with anti-estrogen therapy such as tamoxifen — which blocks the effects of estrogen, the researchers said, in the paper published in the journal CANCER. Soy products potentially have a protective effect for women with breast cancer.

Painkillers with no side effects! IANS, LONDON

R

esearchers have discovered a new way of developing painkillers that act only on inflamed tissues, while keeping healthy ones unaffected, suggesting that the severe side effects currently associated with these medicines might be avoided. When used in an animal model, their prototype of a morphine-like molecule was able to produce substantial pain relief in inflamed tissues without severe side effects, according to a study published in the journal Science. The team of researchers used computational simulation to analyze interactions at opioid receptors — the cell’s docking sites for painkillers. “By analyzing drug-opioid receptor interactions in damaged tissues, as opposed to healthy tis-

sues, we were hoping to provide useful information for the design of new painkillers without harmful

Opioids are pain killers mainly used to treat pain associated with tissue damage and inflammation side effects,” said Christoph Stein from Charite – Universitatsmediz in Berlin in Germany. Opioids are a class of strong pain killers and are mainly used to treat

pain associated with tissue damage and inflammation, such as that caused by surgery, nerve damage, arthritis or cancer. Common side effects associated with their use include drowsiness, dependency, constipation and nausea, among others. In the study, the researchers showed they were able to analyze morphine-like molecules and their interactions with opioid receptors. Also, they were able to successfully identify a new mechanism of action, which is capable of producing pain relief only in the desired target tissues — those affected by inflammation.
