Jindal quits presidential race

I’ve come to the realization this is not my time. So I am suspending my campaign: Jindal detailed policy papers, and given this crazy, unpredictable election season, clearly there just wasn’t a lot of interest in those policy papers.” He is the third Republican to suspend his campaign, after former Texas Governor Rick Perry and Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker dropped out earlier this year. Once seen as a rising star in the

aying “This is not my time,” Louisiana’s Indian-American Republican Governor Bobby Jindal has abruptly dropped out of the 2016 US presidential race. Announcing his decision on Fox News Tuesday evening, Louisianaborn son of Indian immigrant parents from Punjab, Jindal, 44, said: “They raised me to believe Americans can do anything, and they were right, we can.” “I don’t think in a million years they would have ever imagined that I’d be governor or one day I’d be running for president of the United States,” he said. “But I’ve come to the realization this is not my time. So I am suspending my campaign for president,” Jindal said. “Going forward, I believe we have to be the party of

‘Empower Muslims in India with education’ WASHINGTON: Expressing sadness at the educational plight of Indian Muslims, an Indian-American entrepreneur and philanthropist has called for the community's active participation in India's inclusive economic growth. “India’s Muslims must be active participant in shaping the future of India's inclusive economic growth. They must be partner in India's prosperity,” said Frank Islam in a keynote address to the Aligarh Alumni Association Inc. New York (AAANY). “When they succeed, all of us succeed, India succeeds, and the world succeeds. Let us together change the face of India. One life - one family - and one village at a time,” he said over the weekend. Islam has committed $2 million for the establishment of a management school at the Aligarh Muslim University focused on innovation, entrepreneurship and e thical business leadership. He was awarded the 'Sir Ross Masood Lifetime Achievement Award for Excellence in Leadership, Education, Community and Public Service' for the year 2015, in recognition of his distinguished leadership, community and public service and philanthropy. Citing a study by the US India Policy Institute at the end of 2013, Islam noted that since 2006, the literacy level and the quantum of improvements for Muslims were modest compared to other populations.

growth and we can never stop being the party that believes in opportunity.” “We cannot settle for the left’s view of envy and division. We have to be the party that says everyone in

this country — no matter the circumstances of their birth or who their parents are — can succeed in America.” Asked why his candidacy didn’t take off, Jindal said: “We spent a lot of time developing

Republican Party, Jindal’s campaign failed to gain much traction as he kept polling less than one percent in various national surveys. A Brown University graduate and Rhodes Scholar, he rose to prominence at the start of President

Barack Obama’s first term when he was asked to deliver the Republican Party’s rebuttal to the State of the Union address in 2009. But his performance was widelypanned. With Republican voters favoring outsider candidates such as real estate mogul Donald Trump and neurosurgeon Ben Carson over establishment candidates, Jindal never advanced past the “undercard” round at the Republican debates held thus far. In announcing his departure from the race, Jindal also said he would go back to work at his think tank, America Next. Jindal told Fox he is not endorsing another candidate right now, but will support the eventual Republican presidential nominee. “At the end of the day I trust the American people to select our nominee for the next president,” he said.

Republicans intensify efforts to bar Syrian refugees IANS, WASHINGTON

J

oining a growing list of Republican governors saying no to Syrian refugees after the deadly Paris terrorist attacks, Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan plans to introduce legislation this week to suspend the US refugee programme. Governors of at least 30 of the 50 US states, all but one of them Republicans, including Louisiana’s Indian-American governor Bobby Jindal have demanded a halt to resettlement of Syrian refugees until security concerns can be addressed. Ryan as also Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell joined several lawmakers in backing the governors’ demand on Tuesday.

have been sent to his state so far by the federal government. “Why would we let people in the country when ISIS has told us they are going to send terrorists with these refugees?” he said. Jindal also repeated his theme that “immigration without assimilation is invasion”. On Monday, the State Department said it would not change its plan to accept 10,000 Syrian refugees in the next year. States do not have the authority to refuse entry to migrants because resettlement is federally funded. Many Democratic governors continue to support the refugee plan. New Hampshire’s Maggie Hassan is the lone Democrat opposed to the Syrian refugees.

Bomb scare diverts two Paris-bound flights WASHINGTON: Two Air France flights headed from the US to France were diverted due to bomb scare. Both flights landed safely on November 17 night. Terror: France hits back

A woman suicide bomber blew herself up and another terrorist was fatally shot by a sniper in one of the biggest mass police mobilization in France after Paris bombings that killed 129 people

woman suicide bomber blew herself up and another terrorist was fatally shot by a sniper as police raided an apartment in a suburb here to catch the mastermind of the horrific Paris attack on November 18, media reports said. As many as seven deafening blasts shook Saint Denis as heavy gunfire broke out in the wee hours. Truckloads of armed policemen swarmed the area where terrorists were said to be holed up in an apartment. One of the suspects was shot by a police sniper, while the second, a woman, blew herself up at start of the operation, Al Jazeera quoted Paris’ prosecutor Francois Molins as saying. An earlier report said that three were killed. Key suspect Abdelhamid Abaaoud, a 27-year-old Belgian of Moroccan origin, the alleged mastermind of the Islamic Stateclaimed attacks that killed 129 people and injured over 350, is the target of the ongoing police operation. It is not yet clear if Abaaoud had been killed or arrested. Another suspect, Salah Abdeslam, was also said to be a target in the raid. An unrelated video splashed across media showed six bodies tied at the end of Abaaoud’s truck and being dragged across a farm. MailOnline reported that the woman suicide bomber may be Abaaoud’s bride. She fired her AK47 at police before blowing herself up. A police dog was killed in the suicide bombing. The police siege continued for over five hours. Roads were blocked off around Rue de la Republique in Saint Denis. Christian, a resident of Saint Denis’ rue de la République, told local French channel BFMTV that there was noise of gunfire. Later blasts smashed the windows in the flat and a mattress was flung out of the window, The Telegraph report-

The two leaders will meet in the Oval Office of the White House on•November 24, “in the wake of the horrific terrorist attacks in Paris of November 13”, Xinhua quoted the White House as saying in a statement. Simultaneous shootings and explosions at restaurants, a concert

ed. “I’ve been hearing gunshots continuously, like fireworks... There have been some breaks but... to me it sounds like continuous gunshots,” another resident, Benson Hoi, told the BBC. At least five people were believed to have been in the targeted third floor flat, reported BBC citing French media. As the gunbattle raged in Paris, two Air France flights headed from the US to France were diverted due to bomb scare. Both flights landed safely, the media reported. Also, a football match between

hall and a stadium in Paris on the night of November 13 killed at least 129 people. The Islamic State militant group claimed responsibility for the carnage. The White House said the two presidents will consult and coordinate efforts “to assist France’s investigation into these attacks”. They will also discuss further cooperation as part of the 65-member counter-IS coalition, and “reiterate our shared determination to confront the scourge of terrorism”, the statement said.

Germany and the Netherlands was canceled in Hannover in Germanyon November 17 evening after a threat of attacks involving explosives was received. However no explosives were found, a minister said. Earlier, following last week’s Paris attacks by Islamist militants that claimed at least 129 lives, French authorities mobilized 115,000 personnel to ratchet up security across the country. The interior minister added that 128 raids on suspected Islamist militants had been carried out overnight in last two-three days,

France launches fresh air-strikes

‘IS social media savvy terrorists’

PARIS: French warplanes carried out a new round of airstrikes on Islamic State (IS) targets in Syria’s Raqqa region this week, defense officials said. According to the French defense ministry, there were seven airstrikes and at least three major explosions, CNN reported. The French military had already conducted a series of airstrikes in Raqqa on November 15 and 16. The strikes destroyed a command center and training center. France has been conducting airstrikes against IS targets in Syria since September as part of a US-led anti-terror coalition.

WASHINGTON: US Defense Secretary Ashton Carter said the capability of action of the IS in the US “is not what it is in Europe”, while warning of the challenges of dealing with the first social media savvy terrorist group. At a security forum organized by the Wall Street Journal in Washington, Carter called the IS “the first social media terrorists”, just as Al Qaeda were the first internet terrorists, Efe news agency reported. Carter pointed out the jihadists have lesser capacity to carry out attacks in the US as compared to Europe due to the higher “terrorist inclinations” of some European citizens and their geographical proximity to the Middle East. The greater threat for the US, according to him, was from the socalled “lone wolves” (American citizens) indoctrinated by IS propaganda, such as in the case of the attack in Chattanooga, Tennessee, which left six people dead a few months ago. Paris attacks, Pentagon chief said, was not “surprising” given the previous jihadist threats.

BBC reported. A total of 104 suspects were placed under house arrest and seized weapons that include a rocket launcher, a CNN report said. French warplanes carried out a new round of airstrikes on the Islamic State’s (IS) Syrian stronghold of Raqqa earlier. Authorities reported seven strikes and at least three major explosions in the city.

Nitish Kumar will take oath as chief minister on November 20 along with a 36-member council of ministers. There will be 16 ministers from Lalu Prasad’s RJD, 15 from the JDU and five from the Congress in the new government, said sources. The RJD emerged as the single largest party with 80 assembly seats, followed by the JD-U with 71.

T HYDERABAD: Chittoor Mayor Katari Anuradha was brutally murdered and her husband Katari Mohan was critically injured in an attack on Tuesday by three men allegedly wearing burqas. The three men barged into the office of the Chittoor Municipal Corporation in Andhra Pradesh and attacked the couple, both leaders of the ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP). According to witnesses, the attackers opened fire at point blank range and also attacked the couple with knives and daggers as some corporators and others present there watched in horror. While Anuradha, who was shot in the head, succumbed while being taken to a hospital, her husband was in critical condition. Mohan was first taken to a hospital in Chittoor and later shifted to the Christian Medical College (CMC) Hospital in Vellore in neighboring Tamil Nadu. The three attackers, suspected to be from Karnataka, later surrendered before police. Police seized a locally-made firearm and burqas from the scene. Mohan’s supporters suspect the involvement of his brother-in-law Chandrasekhar alias Chintu.

to attend are Akhilesh Yadav (Samajwadi Party, Uttar Pradesh), Naveen Patnaik (BJD, Odisha), Arvind Kejriwal (AAP, Delhi), Mamata Banerjee (TMC, West Bengal) and Oommen Chandy (Congress, Kerala). Nitish Kumar has also invited veteran BJP leader L.K. Advani and BJP Lok Sabha member Shatrughan Sinha, no invitation was sent to any other BJP leader, including prime minister Narendra Modi.

alks between India and Pakistan can move forward only if Prime Minister Narendra Modi is removed from his post, Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar has told a Pakistani television channel. “First, it is required to remove Modi, otherwise talks will not move forward. We’ll have to wait for four years. These people are very optimistic about Modi, they think that talks will move forward with Modi’s presence. But I don’t think so,” Aiyar told Dunya TV. After last week’s Paris terror attacks, Aiyar had said “anti-Islam

phobia that is being carried out in the western countries should be stopped immediately”. On his remarks about prime

minister, Minority Affairs Minister Najma Heptulla said: “Perhaps Mani Shankar Aiyar forgot that Modi ji was elected by the people.

It is a reprehensible comment and we condemn it.” On Congress distancing from Aiyar, Heptulla said: “This is a good strategy of the Congress. First, you make them pass a statement, and then distance from it. How dare he make such statement on a Pakistani television? I know what goes on in Congress party. When they say they are distancing from the remark, I don’t believe it.” BJP spokesperson Meenakshi Lekhi said: “Some people are behaving and conducting themselves as propagandists for ISIS (Islamic State) and Taliban. We need to watch out for fringe elements in India.”

Ashok Singhal, man behind Babri razing, is dead IANS, GURGAON

V

HP leader Ashok Singhal, who was one of the key architects of the mass campaign that led to the razing of the Babri mosque in 1992, died here on Tuesday. He was 89. In an acknowledgement of his stature in the Hindutva movement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called Singhal’s death at a hospital here “a deep personal loss” and described him as “an institution in himself”. Home Minister Rajnath Singh, meanwhile, said he “dedicated his life to the nation”. He was cremated at Delhi’s Nigambodh Ghat on November 18. Singhal, whose aggressive championing of a Ram temple at the

Babri Masjid site in Ayodhya helped the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to scale new heights, breathed his last at Medanta Hospital here. Singhal was admitted to the hospital on November 13 with heart and kidney problems. A passionate votary of Hindutva, the Agra-born Singhal, son of a government offi-

cial, joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in 1942. He worked mainly in Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and Haryana before the RSS deputed him to one of its then lesser known affiliates, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), in 1980. Singhal became its working president in 1984, the year the VHP organized a “Dharam Sansad” (Religious Parliament) which sowed the seeds for the emotive campaign to destroy the 16th century Babri mosque — that Hindutva votaries said was built at the site where Lord Rama was born. The year 1984 was also when the BJP bagged just two seats in the Lok Sabha after prime minister Indira Gandhi’s assassination. Singhal’s aggressive promotion of the anti-Babri movement made him

one of the best known faces nationally, and gave oxygen to the BJP to raise its Lok Sabha tally to 89 in 1989. Even as the BJP, under L.K. Advani’s leadership, came out openly in support of the Ram Mandir movement, Singhal led a massive crowd during the first assault on the Babri Masjid on October 30, 1990. That bid was beaten back by security forces. But the unrelenting VHP eventually brought down the Babri Masjid in just six hours on December 6, 1992, triggering one of the worst Hindu-Muslim riots. Unlike most BJP leaders who distanced themselves from the Babri razing, Singhal remained proud of the destruction, and vowed to end, one day, the secular character of the country that he said must be a “Hindu Rashtra”.

It is too early to say, therefore, that Modi’s troubles are over if only because the BJP’s present-day leaders at the helm cannot afford to dismiss the grouses of the party’s senior citizens as a “manufactured” rebellion, as Finance Minister Arun Jaitley described the decision of a sec-

y promising, in response to a query in London, that the law will not spare those disturbing social harmony in the land of the Buddha and Gandhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken much of the sting out of the complaints of those protesting against the supposedly prevailing “intolerance”. The heightened prospects of economic cooperation with Britain are also likely to dispel some of the doom and gloom enveloping the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) after the Bihar debacle. On both these counts, which have been worrying a section of the intelligentsia as well as Modi’s prodevelopment supporters inside and outside the saffron camp, the prime minister and his party can be said to have retrieved some of the lost ground after Bihar. But whether these latest developments will take the wind out of the sails of the party elders who have suddenly raised the banner of revolt is unclear since there is some substance in their accusation that the party is run by a Gang of Two, comprising Modi and his Man Friday, Amit Shah, the BJP president. The veterans are also unlikely to give up their quest for seeking

It is not clear, however, whether the veterans are as distressed by the antics of the Hindu Right as, say, the secular camp. After all, as home minister, Advani had casually brushed aside any suggestions about the Bajrang Dal being involved in the arson attack on the Christian missionary, Graham Staines, and his two sons in an Odisha village in 1999 while the then human resource development minister

That there is an element of jealousy in the revolt of the sidelined elders is undeniable. While L.K. Advani had resolutely opposed Modi’s elevation till he realized that he was fighting a losing battle, others like Murli Manohar Joshi and Yashwant Sinha were disappointed at not being accommodated in the cabinet. There is little doubt that they were waiting for an opportunity to strike back.

Joshi, and defense minister George Fernandes, described the grisly deaths as the result of an “international conspiracy”. The views of Arun Shourie, now a regular critic of the government, were similar. Joshi’s other claim to fame is that he was Smriti Irani’s predecessor in the task of saffronizing education. Since personal pique rather than any ideological difference is behind the stirrings among the mothballed elders, who do not seem to have anything substantial in the way of policies to offer, Modi still holds the upper hand.

Bullfighting, Goa’s worst kept secret PANAJI: At a barren paddy field near the picturesque Siridao beach, hundreds of crazed onlookers cry ‘Rocky, Rocky’, while another set amongst the audience shouts ‘Rambo, Rambo’ as two bulls ram their giant heads against each other again and again. Rocky and Rambo - popular names for fighting bulls -- are almost Sylvestor Stallone-like in their physicality, their well-defined muscles sweating with the strain, as the frenzied beasts use their sharpened horns to dig into the opponent’s neck. Police often arrive at the spot and disperse the crowd, but the bulls refuse to call it quits. Next week, the bullfight organizers shift base to yet another location, whose details are forwarded on short notice on secret

WhatsApp and Facebook groups, to which entry is only by member reference. Welcome to the world of Goan bullfighting, banned by the courts and but still passionately loved by a section of the state’s population, which is now being promised by politicians across party lines to “legalize” the sport. Bullfighting, Goa’s worst kept secret, takes place more often than it should despite the legal ban. Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar has said his government wants to legalize the event, arguing it could be a good source of revenue. “We are looking at ways to legalize bullfighting. It can be a good source of revenue for tourism as well as for farmers who raise these bulls,” Chief

Minister Laxmikant Parsekar told IANS. The Panaji bench of the Bombay High Court had banned the bull-fights in Goa in the late 1990s. But the order has not stopped the bullfights. Coastal villages like Benaulim, Colva, Fatorda, Betalbatim in South

Goa and Mandrem, Siolim, Morjim and Arambol in north Goa are well known among bullfight aficionados for hosting the fights at short notice. A bullfight earlier this week, outside Parsekar’s school Harmal Panchkroshi in Arambol was caught on camera and broadcast on local

cable news channels, which showed hundreds of aficionados in attendance. Parsekar, whose government has formed a legislative committee to examine whether bullfights can be restarted legally, did not deny the bullfight on Sunday.

Diwali celebrated in European Parliament

NEW YORK: A team of specialists at Johns Hopkins Children's Centre, including one of Indian origin, has successfully treated a child with a highly virulent form of tuberculosis known as XDR TB, or extensively drug-resistant TB. The case provides the first detailed account of a young child in the US diagnosed and treated for XDR TB, according to the researchers.

The October 16 event brought together MEPs from different political groupings as well as celebrities from several European countries and far away places such as Indonesia and Congo. Indian ambassador to the EU and Belgium, Manjeev Singh Puri, also attended the Diwali gathering.

"We are thrilled that our patient is doing so well," said TB expert Sanjay Jain. Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacterium responsible for TB, is estimated to cause almost 10 million new cases of TB disease worldwide each year, with strains impervious to drug therapies rapidly spreading. The bug's resistance to most known TB drugs render it particularly challenging to treat in anyone but even more so in children, the researchers said. The major difficulties in the case, Jain and colleagues said, stemmed from lack of fast, reliable diagnostic tools to spot and track drug-resistant forms of the disease, lack of reliable markers to help them monitor response to drug treatment, and lack of pediatric-friendly drug formulations tailored to the physiologic and metabolic needs of children. The child was brought to The Johns Hopkins Hospital for evaluation of unrelenting fever and malaise upon her return from India. In all, conclusive identification of drug-resistant TB took 12 weeks, the researchers wrote.

India, China and Brazil accounted for most of the growth in international students on US campuses as their numbers grew at the highest rate in 35 years, increasing by ten percent to a record high of 974,926 students in the 2014/15 academic year. rime Minister Narendra Modi on November 12 told the British Parliament that India was the new bright spot of hope and opportunity as New Delhi and London signed a civil nuclear cooperation agreement. On the first day of his three-day visit to Britain, Modi addressed the British parliament — the first Indian prime minister to do so -- and dwelled on history, shared expressions of joy and the desire on two sides to transform the strategic partnership. Modi talked of “winds of change”, “boldness and speed in decisions”, accountability in governance and his government’s commitment to individual liberties in his address to the British Parliament. Dressed in a bandhgala, Modi received a standing ovation and thunderous applause at the end of his speech to the British parliament which was heard with attention. Hours after Modi reached London, he and British Prime Minister David Cameron held delegationlevel talks and announced that the two countries have signed a civil nuclear agreement. “The conclusion of the civil nuclear agreement is a symbol of our mutual trust and our resolve to combat climate change,” Modi said while issuing a joint statement along with British Premier David Cameron. “The agreement for cooperation in India’s Global Centre for Clean Energy Partnerships will strengthen safety and security in the global nuclear industry,” he said. Modi asks G20 to curb excessive banking secrecy ANTALYA: Making it clear that India has no tolerance towards black money, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on November 16 called for an end to “excessive banking secrecy” in some countries so that ill-gotten money stashed away abroad can return to their country of origin. “We need greater international cooperation for return of illicit money to the country of origin. We must address the barriers of excessive banking secrecy and the complex legal and regulatory frameworks,” Modi said in his intervention on the second day of the G20 Summit here. The prime minister said India had zero tolerance on black money and corruption, and that a number of

steps have been initiated in this regard,. Commending the G20 for its successful efforts to build a more resilient and open global financial system, he said: “We must also deepen cooperation against terrorism financing, including through targeted financial sanctions.”

talks, he paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi at his statue at the Parliament Square here. A fly-past by the Red Arrows, the aerobatics display team of the Royal Air Force, with the Indian colors marked the event. The first day of Modi’s visit saw protests staged by groups opposed to him. Pictures on Twitter showed people gathered at Downing Street,

holding placards criticizing Modi. On the second day of his threeday official visit to Britain, Modi asked industry captains to contribute to India-Britain ties since the political will of the two countries was well established. Signifying the high importance Britain attaches to Modi’s visit, Queen Elizabeth II hosted lunch in his honor on November 13.

LONDON: Asserting that diversity was India’s pride and strength, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on November 13 hard sold brand India during his much-awaited address to the Indian diaspora here even as he urged industry captains to push India-Britain ties. “India is full of diversity. This diversity is our pride and our strength,” Modi said as a frenzied crowd of 60,000 British Indians chanted “Modi, Modi” at the iconic Wembley Stadium in London. “Kabir and Rahim have been our inspirations. The Sufi tradition is the best antidote to terrorism,” he said. “India has no reason to remain poor. I can say that after my experience during the last 18 months,” Modi, who started his Wembley speech in English and then turned to Hindi, said. “Such a youthful nation like India cannot lag behind in development,” said Modi in his over an hour long speech. He said the fact that the world’s confidence in India was increasing was proved by the fact that foreign investment into India has increased by 40 percent.

The statements came as oil companies on November 15 hiked the prices of petrol and diesel by 36 paise and 90 paise respectively. Jayalalithaa said it was unjustifiable to hike the fuel prices citing the exchange rate between Indian rupee and the US dollar and also the international prices of petrol and diesel when there is no change in the crude oil prices in the international market. The students, including girls, while strongly condemning the terrorist attacks, said perpetrators of such heinous acts do not belong to any religion. The students were carrying placards which read, “stop killing innocents”, “all lives matter”, and “we pray for peace from Paris to Palestine”. They also condemned selective outrage shown by the media

Chittoor, Nellore and Kadapa districts bordering Tamil Nadu received heavy rains for a second day on Tuesday, inundating dozens of villages and disrupting road and rail transport. The rains, under the impact of low pressure in the Bay of Bengal, have resulted in largescale damage to crops in the districts besides wrecking havoc in Tamil Nadu. All five deaths in Andhra Pradesh were reported from Chittoor while two people were missing. Flash

floods also claimed the lives of 80 cattle and damaged 80 houses. For a second day, all educational institutions in Chittoor district declared a holiday. River, rivulets, tanks and streams in the affected districts over-

APK, the umbrella organization of planters having interest in tea, rubber, cardamom and coffee, repre-

sents about 60 percent of the organized plantation sector in Kerala. APK chairman C. Vinayaraghavan told the media on Sujndn that

prices of plantation crops had touched rock bottom. Last month, following numerous rounds of talks involving trade

unions, the APK, government officials and Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, it was agreed to raise daily wages. It meant increasing wages from Rs.231 in the tea sector to Rs.301, in the cardamom sector from Rs.267 to Rs.335 and in the rubber industry from Rs.312 to Rs.381. “Yes, we agreed to the hike but we also laid down that it had to be staggered over three-four years. It would be related to the price of the produce. We will certainly honour the hike. But we need time,” said Vinayaraghavan. “We just can’t wait for mere promises. We are seriously short of cash. The government has to decide,” he added.

ollywood superstar Salman Khan’s return as ‘Prem’ on the silver screen through Prem Ratan Dhan Payo is continuing its golden run at the box office globally. The Sooraj Barjatya directorial family drama has minted Rs.2 billion in India and overseas since its release. A Diwali treat for Salman’s fans, the film was released a day after the festival of lights on November 12. Prem Ratan Dhan Payo brings a royal story on the silver screen unfolding chapters about a royal family and how an outsider, Prem, played by Salman, tries to mend the broken bridges of the family. “The total collection of the Hindi version of the film is Rs.1.43 billion in five days. And the first four day

collection overseas is done $ 8.9 million across 48 countries,” read a statement. The figures in the US are $2.8 million, said to be highest opening weekend for a Salman Khan film. In Britain it was $1.42 million, Middle East $2.3 million and in Pakistan

$486,877. Made on a budget of Rs.600 million with Rs.200 million spent on publicity and advertising — Barjatya’s costliest ever film — Prem Ratan Dhan Payo was released in 4,500 screens in India and in 1,100 screens in traditional international markets.

MUMBAI: Actress Sonam Kapoor says the makers of Prem Ratan Dhan Payo had to explain to her that the film’s collections were good since she is clueless about the mathematics behind box-office numbers. “I don’t understand numbers. I just don’t get how it works. I used to receive a call from Fox (co-producer) every day about the collections and I would say ‘Is it good or bad?’ and they would say, ‘It’s a very good news’. This film has made those kind of numbers, so obviously many people have watched the film,” Sonam said at a press meet for Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, where Salman Khan and director Sooraj Barjatya were also present.

uperstar Salman Khan’s blockbuster Bajrangi Bhaijaan, which raked in over Rs.3 billion at the Indian box office, has been watched by a mere two percent of approximately 1.30 billion Indian population in theatres, says a cinema chain official. According to reports, a staggering 74.5 million people, across India, tuned into the TV premiere of the film last month. But in a session on increasing footfalls in theatres at the ongoing Indywood Film market, it was revealed that only 32 million people have so far watched Bollywood blockbuster

Bajrangi Bhaijaan in cinemas. “It’s startling to know only two percent of India’s population has watched the film, which has collected over Rs.3 billion from Indian theatres. Even if we can increase the footfalls to five percent, it will hugely benefit the overall revenue,” said P.V. Sunil, director and CEO of Carnival Cinemas.

t was like a reunion of Bollywood’s stalwarts Amitabh Bachchan and Jeetendra on the small screen when the latter paid a surprise visit to Big B during the shooting of TV show Aaj Ki Raat Hai Zindagi. The cine icons also broke into an impromptu gig on the iconic song Taaki o taaki. Jeetendra, who has shared screen space with Amitabh in Gehri Chaal in 1973, says he was “touched” by one of the stories narrated on the Star Plus show, that he was propelled to personally come and acknowledge it. “It is very overwhelming to see that such people who do good deeds out of the goodness of their heart actually exist. I am really touched,” Jeetendra said in a statement.

‘Now India’s middle class knows taste of diamonds’ NEW DELHI: Indian women still take pride in filling up their bijou box with gold jewellery. But they are also open to having sparkling diamonds as a prized possession, says an exhibitor from Myanmar, who is here for the 35th edition of the India International Trade Fair. Myanmar is famous for its ruby and sapphire stones. A peep into the stall of DQ Myanmar Jewels gives an idea of the richness of the precious stones offered by them. “This time, we have brought more diamond pieces as in India, gold buyers are also buying diamonds,” said Neil, partner, DQ Myanmar Jewels. “People in India, including the middle class, now know the taste of diamonds. We are offering diamonds 25 percent cheaper than the Indian market,” he added about their diamond jewellery that ranges between Rs.15000 and Rs.1.5 million. According to the ‘Consumer Diamond Purchasing Survey’ carried out by diamond mining company De Beers, the rate of diamond acquisition among India’s middle class consumers rose sharply from two percent in 2002 to nine percent in 2014.

Modi spreads desi flavor with sartorial choices in Britain NIVEDITA, NEW DELHI

K

urtas with Nehru jackets, contrasting shawls, bandhgalas and overcoats — Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been making style statements one after the other on his Britain visit. And he has got his fashion quotient spot on, say designers. Whether it was his black overcoat that he flaunted when he landed in London, or the black ensemble with an eye-catching black and white polka-dotted pocket square — Modi’s sartorial choices have been subtle but interesting. Designer Gautam Gupta, who found his looks to be “classic”, told IANS: “I guess he downplayed a little bit after seeing too much focus on his clothes and the overhype. I

liked what he is wearing (during his visit) and he is looking like a statesman.” At Chequers, he went beige with a warm stole in a slightly deeper neutral hue. When Modi stepped out to address the British Parliament, he looked suave in a black bandhgala suit, and you couldn’t miss the polka-dotted accessory on him. It suggested he’s with the times when it comes to fashion. According to designer Varija Bajaj, it’s impressive that Modi “managed to create a perfect balance of traditional bandhgala with a (contemporary) polka dot handkerchief.” “Mr. Modi is a brilliant speaker and popular with communities abroad owing to his extensive visits to address our foreign nationals. He

has been looked upon as a symbol of progressive growth... therefore it becomes hard for him to be under a scanner every time where he is judged to be progressive, yet rooted,” Bajaj told IANS. For his meeting with the Queen at the Buckingham Palace, Modi chose to go desi in a clean-cut cream kurta and churidar teamed with a maroon-colored evergreen Nehru jacket — which, well, if one goes by the present times, has been ‘Modified’. Even for his grand, almost rockstar appearance at the Wembley Stadium, where he faced an audience of almost 60,000, Modi kept his look subtle. He wore a kurta churidar again, and teamed it with a bluish black bandhgala and teamed it with a contrasting textured shawl.

650,000 people speak Hindi in US: Census

BY A STAFF WRITER ASHINGTON, DC -- Hindi has emerged as the largest Indian language spoken in the US, with nearly 650,000 people speaking it. The US Census Bureau, based on American Community Survey data collected from 2009 to 2013, said that more than 60 million people in the US spoke a language other than English at home, 25 million of whom speak English. Top languages other than English spoken in US homes include Spanish (with more than 37.4 million speakers), Chinese (2.9 m), French (1.3 m), Korean (1.1 m), German (1.1 m), Vietnamese (1.4 m), Arabic (924,573), Tagalog (1.6 m) and Russian (879,434). India’s national language Hindi tops the list from India with nearly 650,000 speakers. Some 400,000 US residents speak Urdu, and Gujarati is spoken by more than 370,000 people. Other than Hindi, all the major Indian languages are also spoken in the US. While Bengali and Punjabi are spoken by 250,000 people each, the Census Bureau says Marathi is spoken by 73,000 people, Oriya (5,000), Assamese (1,300) and Kashmiri by 1,700 people in the U.S. It has even listed Bihari as a language spoken by nearly 600 people and Rajasthani by about 700. At least 250,000 people speak Telugu while Tamil is spoken by about 190,000 people, Malayalam (146,000 people) and Kannada (48,000). The tribal language Munda is spoken by more than 2,000 people and Tibetan by over 16,000. The data released by the Census Bureau last week represents the most comprehensive data on languages spoken in the US. Drive to alert Asians about diabetes risks BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- November is National Diabetes Awareness Month and the general rule has been that if you have a body mass index (BMI) below 25, you aren’t at risk for diabetes. Growing research, however, proves different when it comes to Asian Americans. In fact, the American Diabetes Association, National Institutes of Health, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention now all acknowledge that Asian Americans should be screened for diabetes at a lower BMI, and 23 is that number. Asian Americans often develop Type 2 diabetes at a lower BMI compared to the US population overall. “While BMI estimates how much a person should weigh based on their height, it doesn’t address the distribution of fat in a person’s body,” said Karen Kim, MD, Professor of Medicine and Director for the Center for Asian Health Equity at the University of Chicago. “Research has shown that fat around the waist is a risk factor for diabetes and other diseases.” The San Francisco Health Commission recently passed a resolution making it the first city to adopt “Screen at 23”, a national campaign aimed at raising awareness of diabetes risk in Asian Americans. The campaign also targets physicians in private

C

and public healthcare settings to routinely adopt the appropriate screening guidelines when dealing with Asian patients. Led by the National Council for Asian and Pacific Islander Physicians, key sponsors include the American Diabetes Association and Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Diabetes Coalition (AANHPI DC) Chicago-based Asian Health Coalition in Chicago is a member of AANHPI DC, and is supporting the campaign’s efforts to get the word out through a public service announcement poster and encourages Asian Americans to speak with their healthcare providers about getting tested for diabetes. “One of the difficulties of fighting diabetes is that it can be invisible. Most of the time it’s a silent disease without any symptoms until you develop complications,” says Edwin Chandrasekar. “But there’s a simple hemoglobin blood test, which can assess your average blood sugar over the past year. Don’t hesitate to ask your doctor if you should be screened for diabetes.”

50 complaints against dentist for mistreating children BY A STAFF WRITER OME, GA – A Georgia dentist is the subject of numerous malpractice lawsuits after allegedly botching a slew of routine procedures. According to the Atlanta JournalConstitution, in 2012 the Rome police and federal agents with the US Department of Health and Human Service raided the Floyd county dentist office of Dr. Maheshvar Patel. The complaints against the office and Patel became so numerous, investigators hired a dental consultant to review the medical records they confiscated. To this day, the District Attorney’s office is still investigating the more than 50 complaints from parents claiming their children were mistreated. The police say they immediately notified the Georgia Board of Dentistry about the criminal investigation. But the board didn’t take action until July of 2015, when it released a public reprimand. According to the notice, Patel lacked “documentation to justify the treatment rendered” to several children between 2010 and 2012, and that he “used inappropriate or excessive restraints, and was overly forceful” in treating his minor patients. Patel left the Children’s Dentistry of Rome and opened a new office in Marietta, Ga. where he is currently practicing. Since Patel vacated his former practice, the police say there haven’t been any recent complaints.

Multiple shots fired into Florida Muslim home

BY A STAFF WRITER RLANDO, FL -- A Muslim family said on November 15 that they might be victims of a hate crime after shots were fired into their Orlando house. Amir and Nehal Elmasri said when they returned home to their gated community from feeding the homeless, they noticed a bullet hole in their garage door. The family said that the bullet went through their garage and into their master bedroom. “Just a little bit of a black hole in a beige garage door, when we parked right there,” Amir Elmasri said. “So, it’s in front of my eyes and I said, ‘What is that?’” The bullet stopped after getting lodged in a dresser drawer. Other bullet holes were also found in the home, but no one was injured in the shooting. The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) Florida said that it was investigating the case with their attorneys to determine whether the family was targeted. “The American Muslim community has faced severe backlash since the Paris terror attacks,” said Rasha Mubarak with CAIR Florida. “There have been two death threats to local mosques in Central Florida alone.” Nehal Elmasri said that she and her daughter wore traditional hijabs in public, adding that it was obvious for anyone to be aware of their Muslim faith. Neighbors also said that they believed the family was targeted because of their faith. Amir Elmasri said he had lived in the United States for 32 years and nothing like that had ever happened. He said his religious beliefs did not tolerate violence. “You go and read what Islam teaching is, unbiased, just the books about Islam or the Koran translated and you will see, it is not the teaching,” Amir Elmasri said. Shots fired at empty mosque in Meriden

BY A STAFF WRITER ERIDEN, CT – The police and FBI agents are investigating reports of multiple gunshots fired at a Connecticut mosque hours after the terrorist attacks in Paris. Mohammed Qureshi, president of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community of Connecticut, told journalists that leaders of the Baitul Aman mosque in Meriden found multiple bullet holes in the building on November 15 night. Qureshi says the mosque was empty at the time and no one was injured. Several neighbors reported hearing shots in the area. The police say shots were fired into the mosque, penetrating three interior walls and areas where members gather for prayer. Lt. Sal Nesci says the investigation has been turned over to the FBI. Qureshi says members of the mosque are peace-loving and denounce all acts of terrorism.

Indo-American Center’s annual fundraising gala BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL-- Giving back to community was honored and celebrated at the IndoAmerican Center’s (IAC) 25th anniversary fundraising gala on November 8. More than 300 people attended the occasion at the Marriott Hotel in Oak Brook, Illinois, where WLS-ABC Chicago Anchor Ravi Baichwal emceed the event. IAC Board President Ashref Hashim gave the welcoming remarks, noting the great work of the organization throughout the past 25 years. The new IAC Executive Director, Selma D’Souza, spoke about the impact of the State’s budget cuts to the IAC operating budget and the importance of the Center’s current programs. This year’s keynote speaker Rattan Khosa, founder and CEO of AMSYSCO, one of the leading post tensioning suppliers in the construction industry, shared his personal story of entrepreneurship and immigration. During the evening’s event, a silent auction was held with an array of items,

Burglaries on rise BY A STAFF WRITER INCOLN PARK, IL – The police are asking Near North Siders to take extra precautions after a series of burglaries hit Lincoln Park and Old Town last week, according to a community alert released on November 18. At least six times since November 11, someone broke into a home by breaking the glass in a window or door. Most of the burglaries occurred in the late afternoon, the alert said. The police advised residents to report all suspicious activity and keep their homes securely locked. Anyone with information on the burglaries is asked to call detectives at 312-747-8382.

Bribery charge against JFK cab dispatchers BY A STAFF WRITER UEENS, NY -- More than a dozen taxi dispatchers at JFK were charged with taking cash payments from cab drivers to allow them to skip to the front of the airport passenger pick-up line, the Queens District Attorney’s Office announced. The dispatchers are supposed to distinguish between cabs based on their destination. Those who want to drive passengers to Manhattan, The Bronx, or other longer-distance destinations are directed to a central holding area to await summoning. Taxis can wait two to three hours in the holding area until they are summoned in coordination with incoming flights, prosecutors said. Drivers who take passengers to a closer destination, including Brooklyn, Queens and the Five Towns area in Long Island, are given a “shorty” ticket, which allows them to skip the holding area upon returning to JFK and go directly to the pick-up area. But under the terms of the scam, dispatchers were allegedly doling out shorty tickets to those who didn’t merit them in exchange for a small bribe, officials said.

including tickets to a Chicago Blackhawks game, as well as the theatre. A live auction was also held, auctioning off a Balani men’s suit, tickets to a Chicago Bulls game and domestic, airline tickets, all generating tax-deductible contributions for the Center. The dinner was catered by Gaylord Fine Indian Cuisine. The mission of the Indo-American Center is to promote the well-being of South Asian immigrants through services that facilitate their adjustment,

integration and friendship with the wider society, nurture their sense of community and foster appreciation for their heritage and culture. The IAC provides various services to South Asians and clients from over 25 countries residing in West Ridge and neighboring areas. Over 40,000 clients receive assistance annually with various services, such as, immigration issues, participate in the senior programs, adult literacy (English Second Language) and learn citizenship.

Indian brothers guilty of H-1B visa fraud BY A STAFF WRITER ARROLTON , TX -- Two Indian American brothers have been convicted on charges of H-1B visa fraud and will face up to 20 years in prison, the Department of Justice said. Atul Nanda, 46, and his brother, Jiten “Jay” Nanda, 44, were each convicted on one count of conspiracy to commit visa fraud, one count of conspiracy to harbor illegal aliens, and four counts of wire fraud. They each face a maximum of 20 years of imprisonment and have been fined $250,000. A sentencing date has not been set. The Nandas own Dibon Solutions, a Carrolton, Texas-based IT consulting company. During the six-day trial, federal prosecutors presented evidence that, as part of their scheme, the Nanda brothers recruited foreign workers with expertise who wanted

C

to work in the US .They sponsored the workers’ H-1B visa with the stated purpose of working at Dibon headquarters but, in fact, did not have an actual position at the time they were recruited and knew the workers would ultimately provide consulting services to third-party companies located throughout the U.S. Contrary to representations made to the workers and the government, the Nandas

directed that the workers only be paid for time spent working at a third-party company and only if the third-party company actually first paid Dibon for the workers’ services. Additionally, in Dibon’s visa paperwork, the Nanda brothers falsely represented that the workers had full-time positions and were paid an annual salary, as required by regulation to secure the visas. Federal prosecutors also alleged that the scheme was profitable, because it required minimal overhead and Dibon could charge significant hourly rates for a computer consultant’s services. “Thus, the Nandas, as Dibon’s owners, earned a substantial profit margin when a consultant was assigned to a project and incurred few costs when a worker was without billable work. This scheme is known as ‘benching.’ Dibon actively recruited H-1B workers for the bench,” they said.

Short of breath?

Get screened for COPD COPD is a common lung disease caused by tobacco, smoking and exposure to industrial pollution or fumes IANS, NEW DELHI

I

f you find it unusually hard to breathe during exercise or just after taking a flight of stairs, better get screened for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a progressive lung disease, suggest doctors. COPD is a common lung disease caused by tobacco, smoking and exposure to industrial pollution, fumes and other environmental pollutants. Vastly under diagnosed, COPD will become the third leading cause of death worldwide by 2030, the World Health Organization predicts. “If you are above 35 years of age and live or work in areas where there is smoke, fumes, ask your doctor for simple screening test to rule out COPD,” said J.C. Suri, chest physician at Safdarjung Hospital. Due to common tobacco and smoking habit in people and environment pollution, COPD causes four times more deaths in metro cities of India as compared to the US and Europe, Suri pointed out. After pollution, lack of awareness about this condition is the major reason for increased risk of COPD deaths. Studies indicate that 25-50 percent of people with clinically significant COPD do not even know

Daily coffee lowers early death risk

they have it. That is because the early stages of COPD are often unrecognized. “The early symptoms of COPD are chronic cough, bringing up sputum, and breathlessness during physical activity such as exercise or walking up a flight of stairs,” Suri said. He pointed out that people might discount these symptoms as a normal part of getting older, but they can be signs of a serious disease that needs treatment. Therefore it

should not be neglected. Moreover, both asthma and COPD patients have common complaints of difficulty in breathing. Therefore, this lung disease is often detected when it reaches an advanced stage or attacks the lungs. Lung attack becomes a life threatening condition for the patient, Suri informed. There are now simple tools available for early screening of symptomatic COPD patients.

Yoga aids cancer treatment IANS, NEW YORK

P

ractising yoga can improve quality of life people with prostate cancer who are undergoing radiation therapy, says a new study. The researchers found that general quality of life and measurements of side effects often experienced by prostate cancer patients — including fatigue, sexual health and urinary incontinence — were stable throughout a course of outpatient radiation therapy among the men participating in an intensive yoga programme. “Data have consistently shown declines in these important measures among prostate cancer patients undergoing cancer therapy without any structured fitness interventions, so the stable scores seen with our yoga programme are really good news,” said Neha Vapiwala, associate professor at Abramson Cancer

Centre, University of Pennsylvania. The possible explanation for the benefits of yoga seen in the study stems from physiologic data demonstrating its ability to help reduce cancer-related fatigue and to strengthen pelvic floor muscles and increase blood flow. These latter aspects may in turn improve erectile dysfunction and urinary incontinence, Vapiwala said.
