US govt shutdown hurting markets, no pact in sight The Tokyo and Shanghai stock markets suffered from the sharp plunge in the US markets on Christmas Eve IANS, WASHINGTON

US court orders N. Korea to pay $501mn WASHINGTON: A federal judge in Washington ordered North Korea to pay $501 million to the parents of Otto Warmbier, holding the country accountable for the “barbaric mistreatment” and death of the University of Virginia student in 2017. Chief Judge Beryl A Howell of the US District Court for District of Columbia ruled that North should pay damages to Fred and Cindy Warmbier, the parents of the student who died shortly after being released from a N Korean prison. Warmbier was visiting North Korea with a tour group when he was arrested and sentenced to 15 years of hard Labor in March 2016. —IANS

he partial US government shutdown entered its sixth day on Thursday after leading to heavy losses in the securities markets and without any agreement in sight yet regarding the funds US President Donald Trump is demanding to build portions of his much-touted wall along the border with Mexico. The Senate is taking the initiative in the budget talks but neither the White House nor the Democratic opposition are disposed to give ground, thus creating a scenario in which the shutdown could last into

January. “I can’t tell you when the government is going to be open. I can tell you it’s not going to be open until we have a wall, a fence, whatever they would like to call it,” Trump said on Christmas in the Oval Office, reports Efe. The US President said that such a wall would be a barrier against illegal immigrants and drugs, and he added that his administration would not allow people trafficking across that border to continue. Trump once again insisted that Congress must include $5 billion for the wall in its budget but Democrats continue to refuse to do that and, for now, they are only

ready to provide $1.3 billion for assorted border security measures,. The New York Stock Exchange is not open on Christmas Day, but the Tokyo and Shanghai stock markets suffered from the sharp plunge in the US markets on Christmas Eve. The Dow Jones, Wall Street’s benchmark indicator, lost over 650 points early this week, while the S&P 500 index, fell for the fourth consecutive session. According to analysts, the markets reacted badly to word that Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin had spoken by phone on the weekend with the CEOs of the 6 major US banks, including Bank of America.

Powell ‘100% safe’ at Fed, says Trump’s aide IANS, WASHINGTON

U

S President Donald Trump’s key economic adviser Kevin Hassett on Wednesday said that Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell is not in danger of being fired from that post after the president cast doubt on the recent decisions taken by the US central bank. When asked by local news media about whether Powell’s job as Fed chairman was safe, Hassett responded: “Yes, of course. 100 per cent yes.” Despite that answer, reporters again asked whether that meant Powell’s job was safe, to which Hassett -- who heads the US government’s Council of Economic

U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell (Photo: (Xinhua/Liu Jie)

Advisers -- responded “Absolutely. That’s correct,” reports Efe. Earlier this week, Trump had complained that the Fed is raising

interest rates too quickly, this after a precipitous 650-plus point plunge in the Dow Jones Industrial Average in a shortened pre-holi-

day trading session on Monday. According to news reports, Trump is angry about the interest rate hike ordered by Fed last week and had been considering whether to fire Powell, although Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said on the weekend that the Fed chief would remain in his post. In recent months, Wall Street has shown signs of weakness and the Dow Jones, which is the overall market’s main benchmark, has fallen by 12% since October. Despite the recent stock market plunge, the US economy is experiencing good numbers, overall, with unemployment at 3.7%, the lowest in half a century, and inflation near the annual goal of 2 per cent.

Defense Secretary James Mattis resigns over troops withdrawl IANS, WASHINGTON

U

S Defence Secretary James Mattis has resigned after falling out with Donald Trump over the withdrawal of American troops from Syria and Afghanistan, saying in a parting letter that the President deserves someone atop the Pentagon “better aligned” with his views. The retired Marine general’s announcement came on Thursday, a day after the Trump administration said that the full withdrawal of US forces from Syria was under way. Mattis said he would leave by the end of February. Trump overruled his advisers, including Mattis over Syria troop withdrawal and declared victory

over the Islamic State. However, the Pentagon and State Department for months have been saying the fight against the group in Syria

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has announced that Deputy Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan has been appointed acting Pentagon chief. “Patrick has a long list of accomplishments,” Trump tweeted on Sunday, the BBC reported. “He (Shanahan) will be great!” the President added. Shanahan will take over on January 1, an earlier date than expected. —IANS

was far from over, the Washington Post reported. The President also ordered the Pentagon, against Mattis’ recommendation, to come up with a plan to pull out approximately half of the 14,000 American troops deployed in Afghanistan, a move likely to plunge the war-torn nation into further chaos. Mattis released the parting letter after a face-to-face meeting with Trump in which the two men discussed their differences, a senior White House official said. The retired general, in contrast to Trump, favored international alliances and said that the US derives its strength from its relationships with allies and should treat them with respect. He also

said the country must also be “clear-eyed” about threats, including from groups such as the Islamic State. “We must do everything possible to advance an international order that is most conducive to our security, prosperity and values and we are strengthened in this effort by the solidarity of our alliances,” Mattis wrote. The Pentagon released the resignation letter moments after Trump announced that Mattis would be leaving, saying the already retired Marine would “retire”. “General Jim Mattis will be retiring, with distinction, at the end of February, after having served my administration as Secretary of Defence for the past two years,” Trump tweeted.

New IS module busted by NIA The suspects were planning attacks on important political and security offices in Delhi

IANS, NEW DELHI

IS suspects sent to 12-day police custody

T

he NIA on Wednesday claimed to have busted an Islamic State module by arresting 10 people, including the group leader, who were allegedly planning terror attacks targeting some political personalities and security establishments as well as crowded places in Delhi and the national capital region. The arrest of the members of the module, “Harkat-ul-Harb-eIslam”, was made after the National Investigation Agency (NIA) carried out searches at 17 places, including six places in East Delhi’s Jafarabad area, six places in Uttar Pradesh’s Amroha, two places each in Lucknow and Hapur and one place in Meerut. Six others, who are suspected to be members of the group, have also been detained and they are being questioned. The agency had registered a case on December 20 under several sec-

Lok Sabha takes up triple talaq bill NEW DELHI: The Lok Sabha on Thursday took up the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2018, for discussion and passage amid protests by the Opposition which demanded that the proposed legislation be sent to the select committee for detailed deliberations. Moving the Bill for passage, Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said the Bill was not against any community, religion or belief, rather it would ensure justice to women. “Between January 2018 and December 10, around 477 cases of triple talaq has come to the fore. Even yesterday (Wednesday), such a case from Hyderabad came to our knowledge. That is why we brought an ordinance,” he said. Pointing out that 20 Islamic countries had banned triple talaq, the Minister asked why a secular nation like India could not have this? “I request that this should not be looked through the prism of politics. This house made provisions for hanging the rapists. The same House passed bills against dowry and domestic violence to protect the rights of women. So, why can’t we speak in one voice on this Bill,” he said, urging the House to pass the Bill unanimously. Earlier, the Opposition members protested against moving the Bill and demanded that it be referred to the select committee. —IANS

tions of the Indian Penal Code, the Explosive Substances Act and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. Addressing a press conference, NIA spokesperson and Inspector General of Police (NIA) Alok Mittal said that the suspects were planning attacks in Delhi but he refused to share when they were planning those attacks. He said the agency arrested the

head of the Harkat-ul-Harb-eIslam, Mufti Suhail, a resident of Amroha from his house, who is also a Maulvi in a mosque. The official said the module was planning attacks on important political and security offices in Delhi as well as crowded places. “They were planning to detonate a remote-controlled bomb or a fidayeen kind of attack,” he said. NEW DELHI: A Delhi court on Thursday sent 10 persons, arrested on the suspicion that they are part of a module of the Islamic State (IS), to police custody for 12 days, officials said. Vacation Judge Ajay Pandey allowed their police custody till January 8. The members of the IS module, “Harkat-ul-Harb-e-Islam”, were presented in the court amid tight security. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) demanded their custody for 15 days. The Judge also allowed the family members of six of the accused to meet them in the court. However, one of the family members was denied the facility as he was not having his identity proof. Earlier, NIA had carried out searches at 17 places. —IANS

Harkat-ul-Harb-e-Islam, Mittal said the agency was trying to ascertain his identity and his country. He said the arrested suspects also tried making a bullet-proof fidayeen vest. It was recovered from Amroha. A country-made rocket launcher, 12 pistols, 112 alarm clocks, 100 mobile phones, 135 SIM cards, many laptops and various electronic gadgets, besides 150 rounds of ammunition were also recovered during the searches. The NIA also seized 25 kg of explosive material, such as potassium nitrate, ammonium nitrate, sulphur, sugar material paste, mobile phone circuits, batteries, 51 pipes, remote control car triggering switch, wireless digital doorbell for remote switch, steel containers, electric wires, knife, sword, IS-related literature and Rs 7.5 lakh in cash. The official said the group was a self-funded one and a few of the members stole gold ornaments from their homes and sold them to fund their activities.

Congress befooling the farmers: Narendra Modi IANS, DHARAMSALA

P

rime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said those who were in the habit of looting money were now afraid of the country’s ‘chowkidar’. Like the soldiers earlier, the Congress “is now befooling the farmers”. “Those who were in the habit of looting, they are now feeling afraid of the country’s ‘chowkidar’ and are now abusing him,” Modi said, without naming the Opposition Congress. He said they were now befooling the farmers in the name of waiving farm loans. In his nearly one hour-long address to the public here, marking the first anniversary of the

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) rule in the state, he said his government at the Centre has given Rs 12,000 crore to soldiers in four instal-

ments under the One Rank, One Pension scheme. “For the last 40 years, this country’s soldier was demanding the

One Rank, One Pension scheme. The then government fooled our soldiers and kept only Rs 500 crore for it. When we came to power, I called for the file and officers were left stunned.” “We realized there was Rs 12,000 crore required for it. It’s difficult for the government to take out Rs 12,000 crore in one go so I called soldiers and asked them to give it in four-five instalments and they agreed. Today I am happy, we gave it in four instalments,” he said. Congratulating Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur on completing one year in office, Modi said: “Himachal Pradesh is like my home. C

oal India Limited (CIL) on Thursday said it is preparing to launch a rescue operation at the coal mine in Meghalaya’s East Jaintia Hills to rescue the 15 trapped miners. The miners have been trapped in the mine since December 13 after it got flooded. General Manager of CIL’s Northeastern Coalfields, J. Borah said the operation will be launched

soon after all the equipment and manpower arrives at the site. “We have received a request from the Meghalaya government to help carry out search and rescue operations in the coal mine where some miners were trapped. Immediately we have mobilized the manpower within the organization so as to reach the site as soon as possible,” said Borah, who will arrive at the site on Thursday along with two other top officials of CIL. He said a 10-member team,

including four engineers and six surveyors, is arriving at the spot on Thursday. However, the equipment including pumps, pipes and survey tools will take some time to arrive as those are being sent by road from different CIL establishments.

The National Disaster Rescue Force (NDRF), the State Disaster Rescue Force (SDRF) and the district administration have been trying to rescue the trapped miners but to no avail as the water level in the mine remained very high.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. (File Photo: IANS)

Is Mamata Banerjee scared of BJP?

Mamata Banerjee nowadays regards the BJP as a greater political threat than either the Congress or the Left AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI

F

or a leader who enjoys a huge majority in the state assembly and faces virtually no credible challenge from her opponents, Mamata Banerjee is surprisingly insecure. Her uncertainty about her political position could be seen in the violence unleashed by her party men during the panchayat polls last summer when 16,000 of the 50,000 seats went uncontested by the opposition parties apparently because the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) activists scared away all her adversaries. The Supreme Court had expressed shock over the absence - forced or otherwise - of the TMCs opponents in the polls. Now, the Calcutta HC is considering her trepidations about the proposed Rath Yatras of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). While an earlier judgment rejected the state government’s plea

for banning the Yatras by saying that a threat of violence as argued by the government has to be “real, not imaginary”, a subsequent verdict has favored a closer look at what the intelligence agencies are saying.

What is clearly worrying the CM is the jump in BJP's vote share from 3% in 2013 to 23% in a by-election this year There is little doubt, however, that Mamata nowadays regards BJP as a greater political threat than either Congress, which has 42 seats in the assembly against the TMC’s 213 in the 295-member House, or the Left which has 32. The BJP, in contrast, has three. What is clearly worrying the CM is the jump in the BJP’s vote share from 3% in 2013 to 23% in a by-election this year where it secured the second place. Behind BJP’s rise is the percep-

tion that CM is rather too lenient towards the Muslims as they comprise 28% of the population. In addition, there is the longstanding problem of illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, who are called “termites” by BJP chief Amit Shah. The CM’s fear probably is that the proposed Rath Yatras will raise the issue of the “termites” and call for a headcount of the “ghuspetiyas” (infiltrators) under National Register of Citizens. Arguably, Mamata’s combative instincts are fired up when she has a battle on her hands. But the problem is that her party men are not among the most disciplined. Since many of them have switched to TMC from the Marxist communist party, they have a “history” of being violent. But it is BJP which will gain if the party is seen to be specifically targeted. As of now, the judiciary is with her, but she will be on a weak wicket if she tries desperately to stop what is the democratic right of an opposition party to take out Yatras. Her desperation can also be construed as a sign of being scared.

s the devastating 2018 flood in Kerala linked to climate change? Based on a study that does not find any long-term increase in the mean or heavy monsoon rainfall in the state, researchers argue that attributing the event to climate change can be “difficult”. The analysis is by researchers at the Water and Climate Lab at the Indian Institute of TechnologyGandhinagar, who looked at the event from the lens of hydroclimatology -- the effect of large water bodies on climate. Factoring in the long-term (1951-2017) changes in extreme precipitation, air temperature and total run-off in Kerala, researchers said that during this 66 year period, the state witnessed a significant decline in monsoon rainfall while the temperature rose. “Therefore, long-term trends indicate drying and warming in

Reservoirs might have played a key role in at least worsening the flood situation, the researchers stressed CWC holds "dams in Kerala neither added to the flood nor helped in reduction of the flood" while squarely holding heavy rainfall responsible. (Photo: IANS)

the monsoon season in Kerala. Kerala had two remarkable extreme rain events in 1924 and 1961, which is prior to the global warming era,” Vimal Mishra, the lead author of the study, told Mongabay-India. “Therefore, we hypothesise that the 2018 event may be similar to earlier extreme events and also dri-

ven by the natural variability of climate. However, the role of climate warming on 2018 flood in Kerala needs to be diagnosed,” Mishra said. “Since there is no increase in mean and extreme precipitation in Kerala over the last six decades, the extreme event during August 2018 is likely to be driven by

other than climate change. Climate scientist Arpita Mondal, who works on detection and attribution of hydroclimatic change, agrees with one aspect of the study in that attributing hydrological events are particularly difficult. “We must also understand that floods are hydrological events, and not necessarily an atmospheric one. Hydrology is what happens to rain when it falls on the

ground,” IIT-Bombay’s Mondal told Mongabay-India. Reservoirs might have played a key role in at least worsening the flood situation in the state during August 2018, the researchers stressed. For instance, the group had earlier reported that excess rainfall had caused above-normal reservoir storage even before the onset of extreme rainfall (August 15-16). But, India’s Central Water Commission (CWC), in its report on the Kerala floods, has held that “dams in Kerala neither added to the flood nor helped in reduction of the flood” while squarely holding the heavy rainfall responsible for the disaster. According to historical records, the region witnessed one of its most severe floods in 1924 and the CWC report noted that the rainfall of Aug 15-17, 2018 in Kerala was “almost of the same order as that of rainfall which occurred during July 16-18, 1924”.

India, China identify 10 areas of people-to-people cooperation The leaders expressed hope that mutual visits between the people of the two countries will be increased in the times to come IANS, NEW DELHI

I

n keeping with the Wuhan spirit in the wake of the informal summit between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping in April this year, India and China last week identified 10 areas for boosting people-to-people cooperation. Addressing the inaugural session of the third edition of the IndiaChina High-Level Media Forum here after co-chairing the first-ever meeting of the India-China HighLevel Mechanism on People-toPeople Exchanges with Chinese State Councillor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said that Modi and Xi set the tone at the Wuhan informal summit for deepening cultural exchanges and people-to-people cooperation. Xi hosted the Wuhan summit to improve bilateral ties after the armies of the two countries were in a face-to-face situation for 73 days at Doklam in the India-BhutanChina international trijunction last year.

“Both our leaders believe that improving people-to-people ties will help in boosting bilateral relations,” Sushma Swaraj said. Stating that Friday’s two-hourlong meeting was unique and different from all the earlier meetings she had with Wang in the last four years, she said that it focussed solely on bilateral cultural exchanges and people-to-people cooperation. “Today, we identified 10 areas of people-to-people cooperation: cultural exchanges, films and televi-

My Indian heritage really helps me: Indo-British singer NEW DELHI: Nineteen-year-old London-based singer-songwriter RESHRICH (in picture), who has had two hit releases earlier this year and is ready with a third offering, says his Indian heritage helps him find inspiration for his music and he hopes to capitalize on the trend among Indian composers to experiment with Western culture and sonics. “My Indian heritage (my dad is Indian) really helps me with finding inspiration for my music because I can use the samples and sounds from Indian music to make my sound unique and different,” the musician, whose mother is a Serbian and who was brought up in northwest London, told IANS in an email interview. “I think India is at a point in time where the music scene is really diverse and people are slowly moving away from the traditional sound and are experimenting more with the Western culture and sonics. In future, I plan to be the artist that brings that sound to life and make a lot of hit records,” he added. Does this mean he has an eye on Bollywood?

“I’m very open to Bollywood; I’ve loved it since I was kid. My grandparents always used to have it (Bollywood music) playing in the house whenever I would see them, so anything’s possible,” he explained. How did the music bug bite him? “I was inspired by musicians like Ed Sheeran, Arijit Singh and Drake. They influenced my career path to do music because of how singing and songwriting can change a person and make them feel. When I was a kid, my dad used to play a lot of Enrique Iglesias in the house so it was inspiration for what I wanted to become later in life,” said the musician, who is largely self-taught. —Vishnu Makhijani

sion co-production, media, sports, youth affairs, tourism, exchanges between states and cities, traditional medicine, yoga and academics,” Sushma Swaraj said. “Both countries had very fruitful discussions and I am very satisfied,” she said, adding that she was inspired by the positive approach from the Chinese side. Stating that joint forums across different fields are designed to build trust among the two countries, the External Affairs Minister

said that the media has a significant role to play in this. “In the last 40 years, China developed fast through reforms and opening up the economy,” she said. “India will become a $5-trillion economy by 2025 and we will both benefit by cooperating with each other.” Expressing gratitude to the Chinese side for taking a number of positive steps after the Wuhan summit, Sushma Swaraj said that both Indian and Chinese armies are cooperating with each other now. “Today, we are working together on a number of regional as well as international issues,” she said. “We are ending the year with a great sense of satisfaction.” On his part, Wang said that he fully agreed with Sushma Swaraj’s positive comments about the meeting. “Today’s meeting was a full success,” he said. “Our leaders have great expectations from cultural exchanges and people-to-people ties.”

Indian-origin police officer shot dead NEW YORK: An Indian-origin police officer was shot and killed by an unidentified man during a traffic stop in the US state of California, officials said. Officer Ronil Singh, 33, had been working with the Newman Police Department since July 2011. He was shot and killed during a traffic stop when he was “working overtime on Christmas night to provide the best for his family”, police officials said. The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department, leading a probe into Singh’s death, said that the incident took place when he called in a traffic stop at Merced Street and Eucalyptus Avenue in Newman. “Moments later, he called out ‘shots fired’ over the radio. Multiple officers responded and found that Singh had been shot.” He was taken to a hospital, where he later died, the Sheriff’s Department said, adding that the suspect fled the scene in a gray, extended cab Dodge Ram pickup before responding officers arrived. His truck was later found on River Road, just outside of Newman. The Department released surveillance photographs of the suspect, asking for any information about his identity. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) described him as Hispanic. “Suspect is considered armed and dangerous,” the CHP said. —IANS

Building materials from old clothes IANS, NEW DELHI

T

hrowing away clothing that is no longer needed is a missed opportunity to turn the fabric into new products such as building materials, as well as address our unsustainable landfill problems, says an Indian-origin professor. According to Veena Sahajwalla from University of New South Wales (UNSW) in Sydney, the abundance of cheap clothes and short-lived fashion trends generate 10 million tonnes of landfill in the US alone each year, which decompose and release toxic chemicals and greenhouse gases. “It could be said that consumers and the fashion industry have a lot to answer for, given that clothing is now one of the biggest consumer waste streams, with 92 million tons estimated to be thrown out a year globally,” said Sahajwalla, who is a Mumbai-born IIT Kanpur alumna. “The clothing and textiles industry is the second most polluting sector in the world, accounting for 10 per cent of the world’s total carbon emissions. Not only is this bad for the environment, it also misses the opportunity to turn valuable clothing fibers

into new products, Sahajwalla explained. To create new building materials, Sahajwalla and her team collected a random assortment of garments from charity bins. After removing zippers, buttons, buckles, they passed the leftover mix of cotton, polyester, nylon and other fabrics through a finegrained shredder. They then treated the resulting fleece with a chemical to help the different fiber components stick together, then compressed it under heat to form solid panels.

In a series of tests, the panels proved to be strong, water-resistant and minimally-flammable. Their properties could also be fine-tuned by mixing the fleece with other waste products such as sawdust filler from old couches. The panels had different textures and colors resembling wood, ceramic or stone “depending on their mix of components” making them suitable for use as floor tiles, wall panels or other interior finishes, Sahajwalla noted. Their strength could also make them suitable for load-bearing applications.

arnataka’s seven-monthold coalition government was expanded on Saturday with the induction of eight Congress legislators as cabinet ministers. State Governor Vajubhai R. Vala administered the oath of office to the legislators at a simple ceremony at Raj Bhavan here. Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy of the ruling alliance partner Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) and Deputy Chief Minister G. Parameshwara of the Congress and others, including officials, were present on the occasion. Those sworn-in are M.B. Patil, Satish Jarkiholi, R.B. Thimmapur, C.S. Shivalli, P.T. Parameshwar Naik, E. Tukaram, Rahim Khan and M.T.B. Nagaraj. Prakash was killed by four assailants due to alleged personal rivalry in Karnataka’s Maddur town in Mandya district, police said on Monday. “Prakash, 50, was attacked by four men with a machete on Monday evening due to suspected personal rivalries. He succumbed to his injuries,” Maddur police station sub-inspector Kumara told IANS from Mandya district, about 100km southwest from here.

Kerala Left Front to induct 4 new allies THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The ruling Left Democratic Front-led by the CPI-M on Wednesday decided to induct the Loktantrik Janata Dal (LJD), Indian National League, Democratic Kerala Congress and Kerala Congress (Pillai), the LDF convenor said. The decision to induct the four new allies came after much dilly dallying. Speaking to the media here after a LDF meeting, Convenor A. Vijayaraghavan said there were at least a dozen political outfits that work in tandem with the LDF and following discussions they have decided to give membership to four. “It includes Loktantrik Janata Dal (LJD), Indian National League, Democratic Kerala Congress and Kerala Congress (Pillai),” said Vijayaraghavan. —IANS

ndhra Pradesh and Telangana will have separate high courts from January 1 with the Centre issuing orders for bifurcation of the High Court of Judicature at Hyderabad. The orders, signed by President Ram Nath Kovind and issued by the Union Law Ministry on Wednesday, said that Andhra Pradesh will have its own High Court from January 1 next year at its capital Amaravati and the High Court at Hyderabad shall become the High Court for Telangana. The order also allocated judges to the two high courts.

“In pursuance of article 214 of the Constitution and the Order issued by the Supreme Court of India and in exercise of powers conferred under the Andhra President Ram Nath Kovind Pradesh Reorganization Act, 2014, the President hereby constitutes a separate High Court for the State of Andhra Pradesh from January 1, 2019 with the principal seat at Amaravati and the High Court of Judicature at Hyderabad shall become the High Court for the State of Telangana,” it said.

from the Ministry,” Rao added but did not give reasons for their ouster. Satish was elected from Yemakanmaradi in Belagavi district in the May 12 Assembly elections and Nagaraj from Hoskote in Bengaluru Rural district. Ramesh represents Gokak segment in Belagavi district and Shankar was elected as Independent from Ranebennur in Haveri district but joined the Congress later. Patil from Babaleshwar in Vijayapura district was the Water Resources Minister in the previous Congress government. Timmapur is a Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) from Mudhol in Bagalkot district, while Shivalli was elected from Kundgol in Dharwad district, and Naik and Tukaram from Hadagalli and Sandur in Ballari district.

Congress Legislature Party leader and former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had earlier in the day sent the names of eight lawmakers to Kumaraswamy for filling up the six vacancies from its cabinet quota of 22 and replacing the two dropped. Though the JD-S has two vacancies to fill from its quota of 12 cabinet posts in the 34-member Ministry, Kumaraswamy did not include any of its legislators. This is the second cabinet expansion of the coalition ministry after the first on June 6 when 24 ministers, including 14 from the Congress and 10 from the JD-S, were inducted. In the 125-member Legislative Assembly, including one nominated, the Congress has 80 legislators, JD-S 36 and the BJP 104, while the remaining are Independents and from other parties like the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP).

Sabarimala: Police take back women devotees due to protests SABARIMALA: After waiting for hours barely one kilometer from the Sabarimala temple, two Kerala women devotees were escorted down the hill, as thousands of Ayyappa devotees on Monday put up a massive protest causing one of the woman to faint. Gadkari to call CMs’ meet on Karnataka’s water project IANS, NEW DELHI/BENGALURU

U

nion Minister for Water Resources Nitin Gadkari will convene a meeting of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu Chief Ministers on the implementation of the controversial Cauvery river project at Mekedatu for drinking water supply, said an official on Wednesday. “Gadkari conveyed the decision on the proposed meeting to Karnataka Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy when they met in New Delhi,” said an official of the Chief Minister’s Office in Bengaluru in a statement.

Karnataka has sought the Central government’s approval to build a dam at Mekedatu on the river

near Kanakapura in Ramanagaram district, about 100km southwest of Bengaluru, for storing and supplying its water to the parched districts of Chikkaballapur and Kolar districts. Objecting to the project fearing denial of its share of the river water, Tamil Nadu has also petitioned the Central government and the Supreme Court not to allow Karnataka to build the balancing reservoir at the goat’s leap gorge. “Kumaraswamy has sought Gadkari’s intervention to resolve the issue between the two riparian states and convince Tamil Nadu

that the project would be beneficial to both the neighboring states,” said the statement. As sharing the river water for agriculture and drinking in the state’s old Mysuru region became contentious, leading to the apex court modifying the inter-state dispute tribunal award, storing it (water) at Mekedatu for drinking only has turned into a protracted legal and political battle. Tamil Nadu has disputed Karnataka’s claim on the project’s purpose, as storing the river water will allow it generate hydel power and thus restrict its flow into its delta region.

ndonesian authorities on Wednesday raised to 430 the death toll in the devastating tsunami triggered by a volcanic eruption in Sunda Strait, while nearly 22,000 people were displaced. Indonesian National Board for Disaster Management (BNPB) spokesperson Sutopo Purwo Nugroho also raised the number of missing persons to 159 due to the disaster on Saturday night that also left 1,495 injured. In the worst-hit area of Pandeglang, in the west coast of Jawa island, 290 were killed, 1,143 injured and 77 missing apart from nearly 17,477 affected, said Sutopo. JAKARTA: All flights around Indonesia’s Anak Krakatau volcano have been re-routed and the alert level has been raised to the second-highest possible after a series of eruptions spewed out lava. evacuation process. Indonesia’s Meteorology Agency issued an alert urging people to stay away from the coasts due to predicted weather conditions that could cause strong tides. The country on Wednesday also commemorated the 167,799 people who lost their lives in 2004 as a result of the December 26 Boxing Day tsunami caused by a magnitude-9.1 earthquake off the northern coast of Sumatra. The absence of early tsunami warning systems contributed to the casualties in Saturday’s tsunami because people had no opportunity to be evacuated, the BNPB had said. The authorities blamed the tsunami on the collapse of part of Anak Krakatau volcano after it erupted in the Sunda Strait. Many people were celebrating the holiday period when they were hit by waves 4 to 5 meters high.

The attackers used a suicide bomber to detonate a car bomb outside the office, which provides service to family members of soldiers and ordinary people who lost their lives during the war or terrorist attacks. Then at least two gunmen made their way inside the building, spraying bullets on the people inside before security forces’ arrival, Xinhua news agency reported. The area also gives home to several apartment buildings and several government offices, including Afghan Ministry of Public Works.

The selectors also announced the One-day International (ODI) squads for the three and five-match rubber against Australia and the Kiwis respectively. However, the former double World Cup-winning captain found his place back in the T20I squad that will play the Blackcaps in three T20Is, starting February 6 in Wellington. With hardly 13 matches to be played till the 2019 ICC 50-over World Cup in England and Wales next year, the Indian selectors went with the tried and tested combinations for the ODIs even as Virat Kohli and the team management will aim to fix a few holes. On club level, Mbappe became the winner of Ligue 1, French Cup and French League Cup with Paris Saint-Germain. He scored 34 goals in all competitions in 2018. The French Player of the Year is presented annually by the France Football magazine since 1959. Originally, only French players playing in France were eligible, before French players playing abroad were also taken into consideration for the award, whose jury is currently composed of former winners and magazine editors. Last year’s winner was Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante. —IANS

ustralian openers survived the early jitters to post 8/0 at stumps on Day 2 of the third Test after India declared their first innings at a mammoth 443/7 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) here on Thursday. Aaron Finch (3 batting) and Marcus Harris (5 batting) went back unscathed after the Indian new ball duo of Ishant Shamra and Jasprit Bumrah bowled some hostile stuff to spice things up for an exciting contest on Day 3. Earlier, India’s massive total was powered by a classic century from Cheteshwar Pujara (106) and excellent half centuries from skipper Virat Kohli (82), debutant opener Mayank Agarwal (76) and Rohit Sharma (63 not out). To add to Australia’s woes, Indian Vice Captain Ajinkya Rahane (34) and stumper Rishabh Pant (39) also got decent starts and more importantly, were engaged in crucial partnerships with Rohit. Resuming the final session at 346/4, India lost Rahane quickly to his old nemesis, Nathan Lyon, who sweated for 40 overs to get a wicket in India’s first essay. Interestingly, this was the ninth

occasion Rahane fell to Lyon, making it the most number of times the tweaker has dismissed any player. Australia could have had Rohit dismissed even before Rahane’s departure if only substitute fielder Peter Siddle had not dropped a sitter at backward square leg off Lyon and on the very next ball Travis Head made a mess of a catch, when the Mumbai right-hander was on 15. Rohit, who by now had added 62 runs for the fifth wicket with his Mumbai teammate Rahane, took full advantage of the two lives

to not only get to a crafty half century but also add another vital 76run stand with Pant for the sixth wicket. Pant looked in fine touch but inexperience overpowered the southpaw as he succumbed to pacer Mitchell Starc once the third new ball was taken. New man Ravindra Jadeja hardly got his eyes in before being caught behind, even as Kohli signalled the declaration of the tourists’ first innings. Earlier, resuming the 2nd day at 215/2, Kohli and Pujara played out a wicketless first session.

Pen mightier than sword again? Books acted as voice of dissent in ‘Illiberal India’ in 2018

SAKET SUMAN, NEW DELHI

I

n a year of unabated vitriol against liberal writers, historians and public intellectuals, books emerged as the avenue of expressing dissent and chronicling the trials and tribulations of the time — threats to free speech, religious polarization and rewriting of history. As subjugation of fundamental rights became increasingly evident, key personalities and intellectuals debunked the failure of the ruling regime’s much-touted agendas in several “book bombshells” that were released during the year. The attacks on the creative community amidst a climate of intolerance, that had led to the “awardwapsi” campaign in 2015, continued this year even as those behind the gruesome murder of firebrand journalist-activist Gauri Lankesh in September 2017 were yet to be brought to justice. Her former husband Chidanand Rajghatta penned a book in her memory: “Illiberal India: Gauri

Lankesh and the Age of Unreason”, highlighting the life of the veteran journalist. The running theme throughout its pages, however, remained about the void that had been created since she was slain. Malayalam novelist S. Hareesh and Goa’s award-winning writer, Damodar Mauzo were among those who faced the brunt of hindutva ele-

ments. Both of them were hounded and received multiple death threats in August, leading to a massive hue and cry by the writing fraternity. Such threats were coupled with social media trolling, and discrediting of noted writers such as Romila Thapar, Keki Daruwalla, Ramachandra Guha, and Arundhati Roy, among several others.

Criticizing the ruling dispensation came with a cost — branding of career writers and historians as anti-nationals and urban Naxals. However, even in the face of severe vitriol that came their way, leading writers lived up to their ideals and practised what they preached by penning down valuable books that will be recorded in the pages of history as the chronicles of these times. They talked about the shrinking space for public debate, the undermining of vital institutions, the fall of moderates and the rise of radicals. Also came books on socio-political scenario in contemporary India and the agrarian crisis that grips the hinterlands. Young Gurmehar Kaur made a stunning debut with the appropriately titled “Small Acts of Freedom” in January. The 20-year-old daughter of a Kargil war martyr was never brought up to be silenced and her courageous, yet subtle, book marked the onset of a literary movement to speak out in the face of coercion.

At a time when demonization of Mughal emperors has become fashionable with the renaming of roads, cities and railway stations, came several books that showed how much of the venom being spewed today relied on little historical evidence. Similarly, while the ruling dispensation relishes in criticizing Jawaharlal Nehru, the writing community presented evidence and historical records to suggest otherwise. While these soft titles aimed at enlightening readers, there was equal music from books that targeted the ruling dispensation, and in particular Prime Minister Narendra Modi, whose silence on rampant attacks on the creative community has irked its practitioners. “Devil’s Advocate” by veteran journalist Karan Thapar, “The Sarkari Mussalman” by Lt. Gen Zameeruddin Shah (retd) and “Memory in the age of Amnesia” by filmmaker Saeed Mirza traveled down memory lane to underline episodes that tarnish Modi’s reputation.

t seems like actress Anushka Sharma and cricketer Virat Kohli gave a teaser of what moviegoers were expected to see in the coming year when they got hitched in December last year. The year 2018 witnessed some of the top Bollywood stars shining even more off screen than on screen when they decided to tie the knot with partners, thereby putting an end to incessant rumours about their relationships. Here's a lowdown on the year to revive the journey of their moments of togetherness: Sonam Kapoor and Anand Ahuja: The couple tied the knot in a big fat Punjabi wedding in May. The wedding took place in a traditional Anand Karaj ceremony, which was

preceded by two days of mehendi and sangeet revelry, and followed by a grand reception party with close family, friends and Bollywood's glitterati in attendance. Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone: This was one wedding that everyone was waiting for and the couple lived up to expectations. They opted for an international location to tie the knot as they wanted to stay away from all paparazzi.

Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas: Actress and former Miss World Priyanka Chopra married American singer Nick Jonas in a "fairy tale" wedding in tune with the majestic venue, the royal Umaid Bhawan Palace in Jodhpur, Rajasthan. Three days of wedding celebrations included a colorful mehendi ceremony, a friendly cricket match and a power-packed "desi" musical evening.

Rise of unicorns in Indian start-ups The investment in the native start-ups rose by a phenomenal 108 per cent annually to $4.2 billion in nine months (January-September) from $2 billion in the same period of 2017 BHAVANA AKELLA, BENGALURU

I

ndia witnessed a dramatic rise of eight unicorns in 2018 from among the start-ups across verticals as against a mere nine in six years from 2011 till 2017, according to IT industry apex body Nasscom. The start-ups joining the select club for their valuation over $1 billion (Rs 7,000 crore or more) are Oyo Rooms (hospitality), Zomato and Swiggy (food delivery), Udaan (retailer marketplace), Byju’s, (edutech), Paytm Mall (e-tail), Freshworks (software programmer) and Policybazaar (digital insurance). “As the start-ups that became unicorns this year are based on subscription and Software as a Service (SaaS) models, they took a few years to mature,” Nasscom Vice President (Industry Initiatives) K.S. Viswanathan told IANS. The focus of these start-ups to acquire customers globally made them unicorns from India, he asserted. According to the National Association of Software and Services Companies’ (Nasscom) October report on “Indian Start-up Ecosystem: Approaching Escape Veloci-

ty”, about 1,200 start-ups were added till September. “The Indian ecosystem is adding about 1,300 start-ups every year but also seeing the demise of at least 300 of them from previous years,” Viswanathan admitted, assessing their survival rate at three to five years. With the addition of the start-

ups, about 40,000 jobs were created during the year, taking their total in the ecosystem of 7,2007,500 firms to 1.6-1.7 lakh. The world’s largest retail giant, Walmart, in May bought 77 per cent equity stake in the country’s earliest e-tailer unicorn, Flipkart, for a whopping $16 billion in one of the largest e-commerce deals globally.

“The Flipkart acquisition by Walmart was a shot in the arm for the country’s start-up sector,” Viswanathan said. The investment in the native start-ups rose by a phenomenal 108 per cent annually to $4.2 billion in nine months (January-September) from $2 billion in the same period of 2017, the Nasscom report said.

By year-end, Swiggy and Byju’s raised hefty venture funds of $1 billion and $540 million (Rs 3,866-crore), respectively, indicating that global institutional and angel investors are betting on Indian unicorns. According to the New Yorkbased market intelligence platform CB Insights, about 60 per cent of the funds raised by Indian startups were invested in unicorns. Adoption of disruptive technologies across verticals spanning education, food, health, hospitality and transportation has been driving growth of start-ups across the country. For instance, the four-year-old Swiggy, which has raised $1.26 billion so far, has been investing in its digital platform and delivery fleet. “One of the reasons for our success is our industry-changing innovations and focus on delivering the best consumer experience. Our delivery-only kitchens have also enabled our entry into 42 cities across the country in last six months,” a Swiggy spokesperson told IANS. During the year, Oyo and Ola also began expanding aggressively in the international markets.

Indian firms see silver lining in Cloud Most business leaders from India acknowledge that Cloud technology is a critical enabler NISHANT ARORA, NEW DELHI

W

ith digital transformation rapidly re-defining the regional landscape in India — amid humongous amount of data being generated — many more enterprises this year looked at embracing agile, scalable and cost-friendly Cloud offerings, searching for providers with deep technological expertise to help transform their businesses. However, while improving IT security and increasing business agility remained among the top expected benefits of Cloud by Indian enterprises, the challenges related to costs and complexities with infrastructure cannot be ignored, suggested a report by the International Data Corporation (IDC). Compared to the Asia/Pacific

(excluding Japan) markets where more than 14 per cent of organizations are in the latter stages of Cloud maturity, only 10 per cent of the Indian organizations are currently in the advanced stages, IDC

said, adding that most organizations in India have plans to spend maximum of their new Cloud spending on Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) applications over the next year.

According to Sashikumar Sreedharan, Microsoft India’s Managing Director for Enterprise Commercial Business, end-customers are not only migrating workloads to the Cloud but also investing in Cloud to support new capabilities as they evolve their businesses. “In fact, many customers are opting for a ‘Cloud-first’ approach in acquiring new IT assets. With this, Indian enterprises are now understanding the importance of incorporating Cloud technologies in their digital journey,” Sreedharan told IANS. Nearly 88 per cent business leaders from India, polled in the Microsoft’s “Asia Digital Transformation Study”, acknowledge that Cloud technology is a critical enabler that will fuel their digital transformation. “A whopping 92 per cent of

them believe that every organization needs to be a ‘digital organization’ to drive growth and innovation for their business,” added Sreedharan. Microsoft estimates that the move to digital is a massive $100 billion plus opportunity in India. For Oracle, 2018 saw strong Cloud adoption by the Indian firms, both big and small. “We expect this to pick up further pace in 2019. Hybrid IT environments are on the rise, and we expect this trend to continue through 2020 as well, with Indian businesses moving to the Cloud in a phased manner,” said Shailender Kumar, Regional Managing Director, Oracle India. Most Indian businesses are currently looking to adopt Hybrid Cloud and the trend continued this year.

Politics

BJP in Uttar Pradesh: The year the lotus started to wilt In 2018, BJP’s ‘lotus’ has begun to wilt as evident from several developments over the year MOHIT DUBEY, LUCKNOW

T

he lotus was in full bloom in 2017 as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged out of its 14-year political exile and stormed to power in India’s most populous and politically crucial state of Uttar Pradesh. A year-and-a-half later, in 2018, the lotus has begun to wilt as evident from several developments over the year. On the one hand, there is tremendous resentment in the party cadres, who slogged to keep the party flag flying for 14-years under successive and very hostile Samajwadi Party (SP) and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) governments. On the other, the very people who voted it to power are seemingly feeling betrayed as the BJP government under monk-turned-politician Yogi Adityanath is engaged in acts that are not only unwarranted but also least people-oriented. A spree of police shoot-outs in the beginning of the BJP regime had sent chills down the spines of

criminals across the state. The government strongly defended its police on the issue as human rights watch dogs called them staged killings, specially in western Uttar Pradesh. Many people openly patted the BJP government for their action against criminals and the mafias, but in 2018 the picture changed. There was the shock killing of a dreaded mafia don, Munna Bajrangi, inside a high-security

prison, the shooting down of an Apple executive going back home from a product launch party by trigger-happy cops in the heart of the state and a ruling party legislator thrown into jail for the gangrape of a minor girl — who then conspiring with his brother and henchmen to kill victim’s father. The father had been crying out for justice by knocking on the doors of the police. His killing sent shockwaves across the state as

many, even BJP supporters, felt that the “jungleraaj” the party inherited had not gone. The inept handling of the situation by the police and the state government worsened the crisis until the media launched a campaign and the judiciary was forced to sit up and take notice. The last nail seems to be the killing of police Inspector Subodh Kumar Singh in Bulandshahr earlier this month, apparently at the hands of right-wing affiliate group cadres of the ruling establishment. Instead of the Chief Minister condemning the killing and asking the police to crack down on such fringe elements, who now threaten to disrupt the mainstream, he chose to maintain a stony silence. The disconnect with the people and disenchantment of its voters can be clearly seen as the BJP lost the Gorakhpur, Phulpur and Kairana parliamentary by polls. Phulpur was held by incumbent Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya while Gorakhpur had elected Adityanath as its MP for five straight terms.

The coming together of BSP and SP has changed the electoral equations in the state and political pundits feel that if this arrangement continues till the 2019 polls, the BJP might be in for a major shocker in terms of its numbers. At present, with ally Apna Dal, it has 73 of the state’s 80 LS seats. Earlier this week, Om Prakash Rajbhar, a leader of an alliance partner who is a cabinet minister, predicted “decimation” of the BJP in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls if the proposed SP-BSP alliance goes through. Adityanath’s utterances, behaviour and choice of words have shocked even his own party members. On the floor of the state assembly, the saffron-robed chief minister called the SP a “party of terrorists”, threatened them with violence. While some good things — creation of the One District one Product (ODOP) campaign, farm loan waiver, electrification of the villages, investors meet — too have happened, they have had little impact on the ground.

Tripura’s tremor: Year the Left bastion crumbled against saffron onslaught BJP-IPFT (Indigenous People's Front of Tripura) coalition swept the polls, winning 44 seats in the 60-member assembly SUJIT CHAKRABORTY, AGARTALA

H

istory was created when the first straight poll battle between the country’s dominant Left party, the CPI-M, and the BJP saw the Marxist stronghold of Tripura crumble in the February 2018 assembly elections, after 25 years in power. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)IPFT (Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura) coalition swept the polls, winning 44 seats in the 60-member assembly. The BJP alone secured 36 seats while the IPFT, a tribal-oriented party, won eight seats. The CPIM won the remaining 16. Before the 2018 polls, neither the BJP nor the IPFT had won a seat in

the assembly and their vote share was less than two or three per cent. The 2018 polls were also a major setback for the Congress, which had ruled the state for 23 years (19591977 and 1988-1993). For the first time in 40 years, the key opposition party remained unrepresented in the assembly. “The CPI-M’s tally (16 seats) would have much less if they had not got the support of the minorities, specially the Muslims,” renowned political analyst and writer Sekhar Datta told IANS. Large-scale migration from the Congress to the BJP and numerous other political developments in Tripura in 2016 and 2017 set the stage for the first face-to-face battle

between the BJP and the Left. In October, the BJP swept the local bodies’ by-polls, winning 3,386 seats in different Panchayati Raj institutions. The CPI-M and Congress alleged that through intimidation, attacks and arson, BJP candidates had won 96 per cent of the unopposed seats and the remaining through large-scale rigging. On the welfare front, the BJPled government, in October, hiked the salaries and allowances of 219,454 government employees and pensioners in line with the 7th Central Pay Commission recommendations. And, in a major breather, the Supreme Court last month extended the services of 10,323 Tripura

government teachers by two more years, as the state government had appealed for. The year 2018 also saw a crusade against the drug menaces in Tripura. Immediately after the Bharatiya Janata Party-IPFT (Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura) government headed by CM Biplab Kumar Deb coming to power, the security agencies comprising state and central para-military forces,

along with district administrations, began a war against the cultivation, trade and smuggling of drugs, especially cannabis (ganja). Various security agencies in the last nine months have seized huge quantities of numerous drugs valued at over Rs 40 crore. On the security front, there were no incidents of militancy for the fourth consecutive year in a state once devastated by terrorism.

Space

New beginnings for Indian space sector The year saw ISRO crossing the milestone of lifting and putting into orbit over 250 foreign satellites VENKATACHARI JAGANNATHAN, CHENNAI

T

he year 2018 could be termed as one of several new beginnings for the Indian space agency: the political sanction for a manned Gaganyaan mission, operationalization of the heaviest rocket, steps to license out lithium ion battery technology, introduction of new technologies in rockets and satellites and the decision to go ahead with the Indian Data Relay Satellite System (IDRSS), among others. As the year ended, the IAF got its own eye in the sky to exponentially enhance its capabilities. The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) also carried out a sort of `Swachh Bharat’ mission clearing the backlog of satellite launches. “The year involved hectic activities with several rocket and satellite launch missions. We completed the NAVIC satellite constellation (a regional satellite navigation system similar to GPS) and launched com-

munication satellites like GSAT 29, GSAT 11, GSAT 6A and GSAT 7A. Further, our heaviest rocket, GSLV Mk III, became operational,” ISRO Chairman K. Sivan told IANS. Interestingly Sivan is one of the new beginnings for ISRO as he assumed office in 2018. “The major boost was the Gaganyaan announcement by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It was a major target announcement. Necessary infrastructure is being augmented,” Sivan said. “During 2018, almost all the technological issues relating to Chandrayaan-2 were sorted out. All the scientific instruments are ready,” S. Somanath, Director, Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) told IANS. “With the challenge of realizing a human space mission in 2022 an energized ISRO is working hard towards various goals for realizing the mission and others,” Somanath added. One of the critical projects was the IDRSS.

(Above) A crew module during a test conducted by ISRO in Andhra Pradesh on July 5. (Left) PSLV C-43 launched on November 29. (Photos: PIB)

“There will be two IDRSS satellites of which one is targeted to be flown next year,” Sivan said. The IDRSS satellites will be placed in geostationary orbit, enabling satellite to satellite communication and reducing the dependence on the ground stations. This communication is crucial for a manned space mission as there cannot be a risk of being without a connection and data relay.

The year 2018 also saw sanctions for infrastructure augmentation — connected and non-connected with the proposed manned mission. “Approval for a fully electric-propelled satellite has been obtained. Similarly, sanction for additional satellites for the NAVIC system has been obtained. The next version of the reusable launch vehicle has also been sanctioned and augmentation of various infrastructural facilities

are happening,” Somanath said. He said approvals for 30 more Polar Satellite Launch Vehicles (PSLVs) have also been obtained to be flown over the years. Over 100 industries have shown interest in ISRO’s lithium ion cell technology. The year also saw ISRO crossing the milestone of lifting and putting into orbit over 250 foreign satellites bringing the total to 269 foreign satellites.

E

ven as the debate heats up on whether we need a “backup” planet, as advocated by tech billionaire and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, the resolve to take humans to Mars got stronger in 2018. Musk told the media in November that there is “70 per cent chance that he will go to Mars”, despite a “good chance” of him not surviving either on the way or after landing. It is only

very likely that only a few people might be willing to join Musk in this journey - either because of the risk or the cost involved. But his “Starship” (formerly known as the BFR), a fully reusable vehicle designed to take humans and supplies to Mars and also to dramatically cut travel time within Earth, got its first reservation from a private passenger this year — Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa — who is scheduled to start a journey to the Moon in 2023. This year, the US space agency NASA also firmed up its plans to return humans to the Moon and use its lunar experience to prepare to send astronauts to Mars in the 2030s. In February, NASA hosted a conference for scientists to discuss future exploration and research

using the Gateway spacecraft that will orbit the Moon and support human and robotic missions. In the following months, the space agency announced several measures to take the mission forward. “We created new US commercial partnerships to land back on the Moon,” NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine said in a statement. Boosting such ambition this year was a demonstration of a new nuclear reactor power system that could provide surface power on the Moon and Mars. What excited the scientists even more was the discovery of a large saltwater lake under the ice near the South Pole on the Red Planet. The discovery by a team of Italian researchers was made using an instrument on the European Space Agency’s Mars Express spacecraft.

Age no bar Showbiz brings senior actors back into spotlight SIMRAN SETHI, NEW DELHI

A

ge and medium is no bar for talent — and in 2018, Indian showbiz paved the way for senior actors to return to the limelight. Neena Gupta, 59, turned out to be the perfect example. Neena, who became a household name after portraying an iconic role in the 1990s TV show Saans, was away from the screen for a long time. Last year, she took to social media to ask for work. “I live in Mumbai and am working. I’m a good actor looking for good parts to play,” she wrote on Instagram, raising a pertinent question about the lack of screen space for older actors. But who would have known that the actress, who was asking for work till last year, would shine bright with films like Mulk and Badhaai Ho. And that’s how the fortunes turned. While Neena played a mother of two grown-up sons who accidentally gets pregnant, Surekha Sikri essayed a nagging but affable grandmother and Gajraj Rao was seen in the role of a caring husband and father.

In an interview to IANS, Neena urged people from society and industry not to give heed to an actress’ age. She hopes for more roles for women of age on-screen. “There are not many roles. I always say that, ‘After a certain age, what is a woman’s role? Taking care of the family and home. After that there is no role’. When the society will change, I think we would have more roles on-screen,” she said. As for Surekha and Gajraj, they won the audience’s heart with their funny and quirky performances in

the film, which showed that for viewers what matters the most is good acting. Surekha made her debut in 1978 with political drama Kissa Kursi Ka, and made a name for herself by working in films, theatre and TV. After featuring in Balika Vadhu TV show, she gained huge popularity as Dadisa. Now, once again she has wooed her fans with her character of the nagging grandma in Badhaai Ho. don’t have any wish to retire,” Surekha contended. Gajraj has earlier featured in movies like Bandit Queen. But it was Badhaai Ho which brought him more visibility than ever. He is glad character actors are finally getting their due.

any consider Dulquer Salmaan (in picture), who set foot in Bollywood this year with the road movie Karwaan, to be the best export from the southern filmdom. If the young Malayalam actor’s fan base grew bigger and stronger after his Hindi film debut, Bollywood’s Khiladi, Akshay Kumar, also didn’t leave the audience disappointed with his villainous role in 2.0. It marked his Tamil debut.

2.0, which also stars Rajinikanth, released on November 29. The sci-fi film, made on a budget of Rs 600 crore, grossed Rs 400 crore at the box office worldwide in its opening weekend. On the other hand, Dulquer, the son of Malayalam megastar Mammootty, chose a film that was made on a much smaller budget. Still, the Akarsh Khurana directorial earned a spot in the top 10 Indian movies of 2018, determined by global movie website IMDb customer ratings. Earlier this year, Dulquer also made his debut in Telugu with Mahanati, based on the life of actress Savitri. In an interview with IANS, the Kali star, who is one of the rare actors to debut four times, had said: “I am not saying that I am entitled to a big debut in Malayalam film or any language.” But he asserted that his “primary focus will be Malayalam films” and that he will choose from “what comes my

way and take a call irrespective of the language”. His O Kadhal Kanmani co-star Nithya Menen has also bagged her first Bollywood film - Mission Mangal. “In the past also, I was offered plenty of Hindi films. I just wanted to be as choosy with Hindi as I was with films in other languages that I have done. I wanted it (debut Hindi film) to be a really nice film,” Nithya told IANS. The upcoming film will also star actresses like Taapsee Pannu, Sonakshi Sinha and Vidya Balan. Vidya will be launched in Telugu film industry with the biopic on legendary actor-politician and former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh NT Rama Rao. Women shine in year that saw B-town darkest side exposed Women this year came out with some heart-wrenching stories of sexual harassment ARUNDHUTI BANERJEE, MUMBAI

F

rom showing a pregnant woman in her early 50s at centrestage in a mainstream film to pretty faces of Hindi cinema being cast as characters celebrating their sexual desire unabashedly — 2018 offered some milestones for women empowerment in Hindi cinema. With the so-called “woman centric” films surpassing the Rs 100 crore mark to a male superstar narrating a story on menstruation hygiene or a woman director’s making it as India’s Oscar entry, this trend seems to have here to stay. This, in the same industry that finally saw a collective consciousness on the darkest and dirtiest side of the business emerge as women came out with some heart-wrenching stories of sexual harassment, courtesy the #MeToo movement. Following last year’s trend of Hindi films like Lipstick Under My Burkha, Bareilly Ki Barfi and Tumhari Sulu, stories told through the female gaze in the narrative continued this year with films like Rima Das’ Village Rockstars, Meghna Gulzar’s Raazi, Nandita Das’ Manto or Leena Yadav’s Rajma Chawal.

“I think the influx of women at the workplace is also changing the narratives in our cinema,” Zoya Akhtar, whose Gully Boys will premiere at the Berlinale, told IANS. It’s also noteworthy how both Badhaai Ho and Raazi are centered on female characters, but none of them was marketed with the “woman-centric” flag. Veere Di Wedding, featuring Sonam Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Swara Bhaskar and Shikha Talsania, too clearly promoted the film with a #notachickflick tag. Junglee Pictures’ Priti Shahani,

producer of Raazi and Badhaai Ho, said: “Perhaps that is why ‘female-oriented film’ was not the interest area for the audience to watch out for. The story of ‘Raazi’ was strong enough to intrigue the audience. When they went to the theatre to watch it, they got a strong story where each character was equally important to complete the story. That is

the magic of Meghna.” On digital entertainment platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, actress Kubra Sait played a transgender character in Sacred Games and performed a frontal nudity scene, Rajshri Deshpande went topless for a scene in the same series, while Swara, Kiara Advani and Shweta Tripathi performed masturbation scenes in various projects, breaking the rules surrounding portrayal of women on-screen. Shweta said: “Whether it is a kissing scene or masturbation, these scenes don’t define us or the character we are playing. Pro-

jecting sexuality on-screen is not to titillate but to portray a character in a realistic manner. If only we do not look at sex as a taboo, we will stop judging women characters on-screen and off screen. “If we actors are performing a scene without inhibition, please do not set us aside with the tag ‘bold’... It has more to it.” Citing Swara’s example from Veere Di Wedding, Shweta said: “Of course her masturbation scene was criticized, but my blood boiled when on social media, people were tagging her father and asking, ‘How do you look at this as a father?’ This is ridiculous! I have seen how mainstream media constantly talking about bold scenes... as if that’s what we are known for and not our skill as actors. “Whether it is Richa (Chadha), Radhika (Apte), Rasika (Dugal), myself and others who are constantly pushing the envelope, it is unfortunate to see how not only men but women in the media try to put us Down,” said the “Mirzapur” actress. Year 2019 will be starting with a woman-led film like Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi, which will carry forward the hope of celebrating more stories about strong women on the silver screen.

Content triumphed over star power in southern cinema HARICHARAN PUDIPEDDI, CHENNAI

F

rom a biopic on legendary southern actress Savitri to a hard-hitting film on castebased discrimination and a moving drama centered on events that follow an untimely death, southern cinema ventured into uncharted territories in 2018 with content that not only stood out, but also made an impact at the box-office. The year just ending is definitely a step-up in terms of content in southern cinema and the success of films such as 96, Pyaar Prema Kadhal and Sudani From Nigeria assured that content triumphed over star power. Well-known distributor B. Sak-

Posters of Pyaar Prema Kadhal (above) and Sudani From Nigeria.

thivelan of Sakthi Film Factory said it’s been a better year for Tamil cinema vis-à-vis 2017. “Overall, it’s been a good year

for Tamil cinema. The success of good films with strong content has led to increase in market size. This year also witnessed the launch of new multiplexes which have helped the industry boom,” Sakthivelan told IANS. He added that despite the piracy threat, audiences have lapped up content-rich films. “Piracy will always remain a threat but this year audiences didn’t let down any film with good content. The best examples are films such as Chekka Chivantha Vaanam, Pariyerum Perumal, 96 and Ratsasan, which released around the same time and ran successfully in theatres for a good number of weeks,” he said. While Chekka Chivantha

Vaanam emerged as the biggest grosser in Mani Ratnam’s career, both 96 and Ratsasan were adjudged hits by the trade. The biggest blockbusters were Vijay’s Sarkar and superstar Rajinikanth’s 2.0, which is still running in cinemas. Other notable Tamil hits were Kolamavu Kokila, Pyar Prema Kadhal, Imaikka Nodigal, Tamizh Padam 2 and Tik Tik Tik. According to Deepak Kodela of popular box-office portal AndhraBoxOffice.com, it’s been a decent year for Telugu filmdom. “Last year, we had Baahubali 2, so you can’t better that. The problem with Telugu releases this year was that most of the films were not able to earn profits like last year.

I have acted in comedy movies previously, but this was quite an experience. I truly feel that the role I play in ‘Bhaiaji Superhit’ is almost on the lines of the roles I used to play in the 1990s — where men are vendetta-driven and love to stomp feet, flex biceps, uproot water pumps and roar like lions,” Sunny said in a statement. Set in Varanasi, Bhaiaji Superhit revolves around ‘bhaiaji’ who wants to be an actor in Hindi cinema.

I can say…in the same way, I chose Amrita (Rao) for the role of Meena Tai Thackeray. We selected our team very fast,” mentioned Raut. The film is based on the life of Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray. Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma had made a film titled Sarkar on a fictional character of a politician. One can see a similarity in the image of that character with Thackeray. Asked if the film can be compared with Sarkar that had megastar Amitabh Bachchan, Nawazuddin said: “I don’t think anyone can overshadow someone because an actor has his own style and method of performance.” Directed by Abhijit Panse, Thackeray will be releasing on January 25.

ctress Kangana Ranaut, who is gearing for the release of her forthcoming film Manikarnika — The Queen of Jhansi, says that people who criticize her at the drop of a hat will have to shut their mouths after watching the film. Kangana was interacting with the media on the sidelines of her fashion designer friend Neeta Lulla’s Christmas celebration party along with Ankita Lokhande in Mumbai on Tuesday. Talking about her critics, Kangana said, “I feel people who are not saying good things about me

‘Zero’: Performances outshine the narrative of this film

H

ere is the sad and frustrating irony of Zero : Told in the safest (read predictable), most conventional (read lazy, method imaginable), it is a story of a vertically challenged man enacted by a Superstar — whose real life story is much more inspiring than his reel life. Standing four feet two inches tall, Shah Rukh Khan as Bauua Singh from Meerut is no different from being himself — confident, cocky and sarcastically brash. His main peeve in life is his height but that does not prevent him from aspiring to love the renowned Bollywood actress Babita Kumari (Katrina Kaif).

Film: “Zero”; Director: Anand L. Rai; Cast: Shahrukh Khan, Anushka Sharma, Tigmanshu Dhulia, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayub, Abhay Deol, Sheeba Chaddha, Bijendra Kala; Rating: *** (3 stars)

But then, our hero has a past. Tucked into the recesses of his being, is the love of his life, the astro-scientist Aafia Yusuezai Bhinder (Anushka Sharma). How they

meet, fell in love and their romance bloomed, forms the crux of the tale. While being fumbling and funny, Shah Rukh Khan holds you

in rapturous attention with his shenanigans. You could say his personality and his performance is both in an “overall” style. Anushka shines as the scientist suffering from cerebral palsy. She steals your heart while sitting on a wheel-chair and in command. With grace and strength, she is consistent in her speech and mannerisms.

Katrina is diligent and it shows in her performance. As an eternally sloshed actress disillusioned in romance, she appears like a modern day Meena Kumari. Among the supporting cast are: Tigmanshu Dhulia and Sheeba Chaddha as Bauua’s parents, Bijendra Kala as the match-maker Pandeyji and Mohammed Zeesan Ayub as Guddu Singh the semiblind, one-eyed sidekick of Bauua. They all have their moments of on-screen glory. It is the style of narrative with the emphasis of talking heads like Guddu Singh and Pandeyji explaining and propelling the plot that is dispiriting.

BY A STAFF WRITER EATTLE, WA— A Seattle, Washington area man was sentenced to 15 months in prison on December 14th, after pleading guilty to brutally attacking an Indian American taxi driver who had dropped him home. Exactly a year before the sentencing, Swarn Singh picked up Rory Benson and his mother to drive them to the apartment where they both reside. According to the Sikh Coalition, which advocated on behalf of Singh, as the passengers were being dropped off, Benson grabbed a piece of cloth Singh kept in his taxi to wipe the windshield and attempted to suffocate him with it. Singh then ran out of the taxi, but Benson grabbed a hammer from his bag, and chased him on foot. When he caught up with Singh, he repeatedly hit him on the head with the hammer, causing him to suffer a scalp laceration and a skull fracture. Singh was hospitalized and Benson was arrested. Singh’s turban– an article of his Sikh faith– was knocked off his head during the attack. The Sikh Coalition in a statement said the incident was motivated by hate. The victim thanked the Sikh Coalition in his court statement. The organization worked with Singh for 11 months to make sure the Bellevue Police Department and the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office were properly investigating the incident and reviewing appropriate charges.

Pakistani Human Smuggler Arrested in U.S. BY A STAFF WRITER HILADELPHIA, PA – A Pakistani citizen who headed up a ring which facilitated the movement of undocumented South Asians traveling from Central America to the U.S. border to seek asylum, was deported Dec. 19 by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Sharafat Ali Khan, 33, was identified by ICE as the Brazilian-based facilitator of what the agency termed an “alien smuggling organization.” He has been turned over to Pakistani authorities. Khan focused on people from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan, and transported them through South and Central America into the U.S. The ICE investigation revealed that Khan and his co-conspirators charged each alien between $3,000 and $15,000 to facilitate their travel to the United States. Several of the individuals smuggled by Khan’s organization had suspected ties to terrorist organizations, alleged ICE in a press statement. Ronil Singh

BY A STAFF WRITER EWMAN, CA— An Indian American police officer was shot dead at a traffic stop in Newman, California, just before 1 a.m. on the northeast corner of Merced Street and Eucalyptus Avenue, according to a Modesto Bee report. Officer Ronil Singh, 33, had called out “shots fired” over his police radio, after which many officers arrived to the scene to find Singh suffering from the gunshots. He was then brought to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Singh was a native of Fiji who had been living in Northeast Modesto and was working with the Newman Police Department since July 2011. Prior to that, Singh worked as a deputy with the Merced County Sheriff’s Department and with the Turlock Police Department, according to his Facebook page. He had studied criminal justice at Modesto Junior College in 2005. A manhunt for the suspect has begun in Stanislaus County and the neighboring areas. Police say, the suspect may have fled the scene in a gray, extended cab Dodge Ram pickup, which was seen in the area at the time of the shooting. According to a report, the dealer plates on the vehicle read “AR Auto.” Anyone with information on the incident is to call Detective Michael Fisher at 209-525-7083 or dispatch at 209-552-2468.

BY A STAFF WRITER AN FRANSISCO , CA— Almost onethird of U.S. physicians are foreign born and seven percent are not American citizens, summated a research letter published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Overall, over 16 percent of healthcare professionals are born outside of the U.S., noted the letter, which summated data from the annual American Community Survey and was co-authored by Indian American researcher Yash Patel. The ACS is a yearly undertaking of the U.S Census Bureau. One in every 20 practicing medical professionals is an Indian or Indian American, notes the Web site Indian Students Abroad. Indians form the largest non-Caucasian segment of the American medical community, according to the site. The proportions of foreign-born and noncitizen healthcare professionals working in the United States were previously unknown; therefore, Patel and colleagues sought to estimate these figures, according to Medscape.

S

Overall, almost 17 percent of U.S. healthcare professionals are foreign born and more than four percent are non-citizens, noted Patel and his colleagues. The study reviewed data for 164,122 healthcare professionals in 2016. Thirty-one percent of “health diagnosing and treating practitioners” are foreign born, according to the study; 16 percent of nurses and 20 percent of pharmacists were born outside the U.S. Twenty-three percent of dentists are also foreign born. “This study concurs with earlier studies in showing substantial diversity among physicians, and it also underlines the significant proportions of foreign-born individuals and non-citizens in most other occupations within the healthcare workforce,” noted physician Nicola Parry, reviewing Patel’s study on Medscape. “As the U.S. population ages, there will be an increased need for many healthcare professionals, particularly those who provide personal care, like home health care aides, a large proportion of whom are currently non–U.S.born,” stated Patel and his co-authors.

BY DEPT. OF JUSTICE / U.S.ATTONEY’S OFFICE HICAGO, IL — A father and son are among 18 individuals facing criminal charges as part of a federal investigation into cocaine trafficking in the Chicago area. During the multi-year investigation, dubbed “Operation Flawed Deal,” law enforcement seized multiple bank accounts, more than a kilogram of cocaine, a Mercedes G63 sport-utility vehicle, and two handguns, including one with an extended magazine. The defendants allegedly distributed cocaine to hundreds of customers in the Chicago area, with drivers dispatched to make doorto-door deliveries. The investigation was conducted under the umbrella of the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF), a partnership between federal, state and local law enforcement agencies, whose principal mission is to identify, disrupt and dismantle the most serious drug trafficking organizations. Two indictments unsealed this week in U.S. District Court in Chicago charge 18 defendants with federal drug offenses. Many of the defendants were arrested Thursday, and they have begun making initial appearances

Binge drinking linked to social media addiction NEW YORK: College students who binge drink frequently post on social media in an intoxicated condition and show signs of social media addiction, a new study has warned. The findings suggested that when compared to those students who had never binged, those who did were more likely to have posted on any social media platform while drinking and while intoxicated. “During these times when young students are feeling disinhibited by alcohol, they may be even more likely than usual to post inappropriate material without considering the future impact,” said lead author Natalie A. Office party: Try to opt for suits which are less formal; lapels are slimmer. Pair your blazer with a crew neck T-Shirt and a navy blue jeans or narrow trousers. Here, instead of formal footwear you can choose a pair of white sneakers to complete your look. A kind of semi-formal vibe is perfect for office parties. Black tie event: A black tuxedo is all what you need. Well-groomed hair and a perfectly tied bow tie. For a more classic appeal, go for midnight blue tuxedo. Alternatively, a velvet dinner jacket is worthy of all substitutes. Corporate party: Give classic black suit a break, instead opt for patterned dinner jackets. A turtleneck is a best alternative to standard white shirt and tie. You may wear it with trousers or can pair it up with a blazer, it goes intricately well with plaided suits.

Work wear essentials for winters IANS, NEW DELHI

T

he winter season brings with itself fashion woes for daily office goers. Acing your style game in winter can be tricky, especially when it comes to work-wear. However, it does not mean you have to give up on your personal style to adjust to the temperamental climate and swap them for unappealing alternatives. To clear the confusion, Ayushi Gudwani, Founder and CEO of FableStreet, a professional wear brand for women, and Carl Virk, Director, Carlton London share their pick of work wear essentials (apparel and footwear) for this winter season.

Knitted pullovers in solid colours are a must in your wardrobe (Pexels)

A do-it-all stole: Multi-functional pieces are a sigh of relief amidst the bulky winter clothing that takes up major space in your closet. A warm stole that can double as a neck

warmer and cardigan is your best bet this season. Solid knits: Knitted pullovers in solid colours are a must in your wardrobe as they are versatile in nature and compliment a variety of looks, if paired appropriately. Choose knits with a delicate texture in various colours. This is a great way to add edginess to your outfit while keeping it office appropriate. Trench coats: Trench coats are ‘it’ this winter season. After being all the rage in western countries, the trench coat trend has also appeared in the Indian wardrobes. Their timeless appeal makes them one of the most sought after winter friendly garment for office goers.

Rishi Vasudev, Vice President, Flipkart fashion, Romita Bhandary, Senior Director, Design, Myntra, and Devangi Parekh, Creative Director at Aza Fashions, list some trends which will be in vogue next year: v It will be a fun year for fashion with many trends from the past making a comeback. and boyfriend jeans and oversized tops from the 1990s. v As you ring in the new year, embrace voluminous silhouettes, dramatic sleeves, and layered

pieces. These high-on-glamour trends are going to be statement makers in the coming year. v Another fun and bold trend that will surface in 2019 is reflec-

tive materials with sequins, spaceage silver, rose gold and shiny metallic accents. v The summer of 2019 will be all about returning to simplicity. Be it undyed and raw cotton, cotton bamboo blends or natural, lowimpact linens, the trend will tap in to a desire for a look that is simple yet elegant. Organic and unprocessed in their natural imperfections, linen-look cloths and natural yarns drive the key fabric trends for the season. v Athleisure is the trend that keeps giving its latest offering as unexpected as it is stylish. Menswear athleisure is casually versatile and comfortable that’s equal parts stylish and functional. Multi-coloured stripes and vertical

stripes on T-shirts will be one of the eye-catching trends for men in the year 2019. Side taped pants will be menswear elite’s bottoms of choice. This street style fashion will be the new cool yet suave look. v Lace ensembles for women are making their way down the runway everywhere. Lace layering will be perfect for creating depth and detailing. Geometric lace and schiffli lace fabrics are must-haves for the summer 2019 wardrobe. Pastel coloured lace will be the new trend with the coral colour being the season’s most sought after colour in 2019. v Chunky soled footwear is a tricky trend to handle but with these tips anyone can pull it off.
