anesh Chaturthi, marking the beginning of 10day festivities, was celebrated across the country with the installation of idols of the elephant-headed Hindu god. Cities in various states wore a festive look as the festivities kicked off amid gaiety and the prayers by devotees. Mumbai and the rest of Maharashtra shifted into a festive gear with the arrival at homes and public places of thousands of big, medium and small idols for the annual Ganeshotsav. The festival, initiated in an open public format in 1892 by Mumbai’s Bhausaheb Laxman Javale alias Bhau Rangari, enters the 125th year. It was popularised on a mass scale by freedom-fighter Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak from 1893 onwards in Pune to unite the people against the British Rule and in the struggle for Indian Independence. In less than a decade, it had spread across the state in a big way and even other parts of the country where public Ganeshotsav celebrations were held. A century and a quarter later, the festival has transformed into Maharashtra’s biggest, most opulent, glittering fiesta drawing lakhs of devotees and tourists, with the biggest celebrations held in Mumbai, Pune

and the coastal Konkan region. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis started the Ganeshotsav at ‘Varsha’, the official chief ministerial bungalow, with an ‘aarti’ (an invocation) and his wife Amruta sang bhajans in praise of Lord Ganesh. Union Surface Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari and his family also installed an idol at their private home in Nagpur and performed a puja before a large gathering.
No special status for Andhra, Center promises aid

NEW DELHI/VIJAYAWADA: Making it clear that Andhra Pradesh will not be accorded special category status, the Centre said the state will be provided monetary compensation through externally aided projects. After day-long suspense and hectic consultation in the national capital, Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley announced on Wednesday night that the state will get monetary advantage equivalent to what it would have got if it was accorded the special category status. Jaitley made it clear that then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s statement made in Rajya Sabha on Feb 20, 2014 for according special status to Andhra Pradesh can’t be implemented as the 14th Finance Commission has recommended that
the special category status can be given to only hill states and NorthEastern states. “We have decided to give a special assistance measure for the state of Andhra Pradesh wherein an amount equivalent to what they would have got if that statement could have been implemented, will be compensated to the state by virtue of externally aided projects,” he said without giving any figure. Jaitley, who was accompanied by central ministers M. Venkaiah Naidu and Y.S. Chowdary, said this special assistance will be for five years — 2015-2020. On Polavarm irrigation project, he said from April 1, 2014 when it was declared a national project, the entire funding will be met by the Centre.
At Mumbai’s King’s Circle, one of the biggest draw is the 68-kg pure gold adorned with 325 kg silver, including a 15-kg silver marquee for the idol installed at the GSB Seva Mandal. Among the celebs, film stars like Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Ranbir Kapoor, Nana Patekar, Sachin Pilgaokar, several Marathi actors, television stars, and others like Lata Mangeshkar have installed Lord Ganesh idols at their homes in
Mumbai. Thousands of idols were installed in Hyderabad and other parts of Telangana. The festivities also began amid fanfare in Andhra Pradesh. In Hyderabad, Lord Ganesha’s idols of all sizes and in different colours and ‘avtars’ were installed in specially decorated ‘pandals’ or on makeshift platforms in residential neighbourhoods and commercial centres. About 40,000 idols have been installed in public places.

Several pro-Kannada and farmers’ organisations have extended support to the shutdown, which
will disrupt normal life, with bus services suspended, schools, colleges, hotels, shops, markets, theatres, banks and factories remaining closed. “Unfortunately, Karnataka is always at the receiving end in inter-state river water disputes, bet it with Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh (Krishna river)

Hillary, Trump in TV Face-off The two struck a pointed contrast on deploying ground troops to Iraq during the town hall held in New York by NBC News and Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America IANS, WASHINGTON
U
S Presidential nominees Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton addressed topics ranging from national security to veteran affairs in their first television forum here. The two struck a pointed contrast on deploying ground troops to Iraq during the town hall held in New York this week by NBC News and Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America. Democratic presidentaial nominee Clinton pledged that the US was “not putting ground troops into Iraq ever again, and we are not putting ground troops into Syria”, while the Republican nominee disagreed, reported The Guardian. Trump, who has long talked about the importance of “taking the oil” in the Middle East, said: “We would leave a certain group behind and they would take the various sections where they have the oil.” The forum came hours after Trump laid into Clinton as “trigger happy”. During an address on defence spending in Philadelphia earlier in the day, the former reality TV star suggested there wasn’t a country in the Middle East that
US Presidential nominees Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton.
Clinton did not want to invade — an assertion he repeated. The US currently has roughly 5,000 troops deployed in Iraq, mostly as official non-combat advisers for the Iraqi military, along with special operations forces. Navy and Air Force pilots also participate daily in air attacks on the Islamic State terrorist group. The discussion took place a little under three weeks before the first Presidential debate on September 26. In response to a ques-
tion from the audience on military sexual assault, Trump cited his tweet from 2013 in which he suggested that the epidemic was a consequence of allowing women to serve in the military. Trump also called for “a court system within the military”, seemingly unaware that the military has always been governed by a court system separate from civilians. When asked what he would do, if elected as President, to curb military sexual assault, Trump

Turkey to cooperate with US on Syria’s al-Raqqa IANS, ANKARA
T
urkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has confirmed that his country was ready to cooperate with the US to liberate the city of al-Raqqa, the main stronghold of the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group, local media reported this week. “From now on, we have to show that we exist in the region,” Efe news quoted Erdogan as saying, indicating that such steps should
be taken to avoid the settlement of “terrorist groups” such as the IS, Kurdistan Workers’ Party and Kurdish People’s Protection Units in the region. Erdogan observed that US President Barack Obama “wants” Turkey to work with Washington to retake al-Raqqa from the IS militants. “Obama particularly wants to do something together (with us) about Raqqa. We have told him that this is not a problem for us,” Erdogan added.
WASHINGTON: The campaign of US Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump announced that it will provide press credentials for a number of media outlets that to date had been banned from his campaign rallies, allegedly because their coverage was unfair to him. From this point forward, accreditation will be authorised for the previously banned media outlets, a spokesman for the Trump campaign told EFE. The so-called “black list” included The Washington Post, The Huffington Post and Politico; television network and news Website Univision and the publications BuzzFeed and The Daily Beast, which for months were not allowed to cover Trump’s campaign events from the area specially reserved for the press, among other restrictions. “I figure they can’t treat me any worse,” the magnate told CNN in a statement.
remained vague. “We have to come down very hard on that and do something about that,” he said. Trump also touched his bumpy relationship with various foreign leaders. He further talked about his so-called “bromance” with Russian President Vladimir Putin, whom he repeatedly praised and cast as a better leader than Barack Obama. Trump went on to characterise his relationship with Putin as mutually beneficial. “If he says great things about
me, I’m gonna say great things about him,” he said. “I think when he calls me brilliant, I’ll take the compliment. OK? “I think I would have a very, very good relationship with Putin and a very good relationship with Russia.” Clinton, by contrast, sought to re-emphasise her foreign policy expertise while defending her legacy as Obama’s Secretary of State. The Democratic nominee repeated once more that it was “a mistake” for her to use a private email server while at the helm of the State Department. “I have made no excuses for it. It was something that should not have been done,” Clinton said. Clinton struck a similar tone when discussing her support for the Iraq war, although not without pointing out that Trump also backed the invasion but has refused to acknowledge his support. “I took responsibility for my decision,” she said of her vote for the Iraq war. “My opponent has refused to take responsibility for his support.” However, Trump asserted that he had been against the war all along. Clinton also pointed out there was “no difference” between her position on Libya and that of Trump.
US wants accountability from Pak on 26/11, no sanctions IANS, WASHINGTON
T
he US has reiterated that it wants accountability from Pakistan on the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks that left 166 people dead, but ruled out sanctions on the South Asian country for failing to weed out terrorists. “We want to see accountability and justice in the case of the Mumbai attacks... there were American citizens who lost their lives in those attacks,” US State Department deputy spokesperson Mark Toner said in a daily press briefing. Toner made the remarks in response to a question about Secretary of State John Kerry’s mentioning about US’ efforts to bring to justice the perpetrators behind the attacks in which 10 terrorists targeted numerous sites in Mumbai. Kerry was in New Delhi to attend the Second India-US Strategic and Commercial Dialogue on August 30. According to Toner, the US has “long encouraged and pushed for greater counter-terrorism cooperation and the sharing of intelligence

between India and Pakistan” in regards with the attacks, believed to be carried out by Pakistan-based terrorist organisation Lashkar-e-Taiba. “That continues; those efforts continue. As I said, we want to see full accountability for these terrible attacks.” However, Toner also said the US was not considering sanctions on Islamabad and that Washington had “very frank conversations with Pakistan... about the need to take more efforts on all the terrorist groups... operating from within Pakistani soil”.

India with Myanmar: Modi This was the first meeting between the two leaders since the Nobel peace laureate’s NLD assumed power in Myanmar in March IANS, VIENTIANE (LAOS)
P
rime Minister Narendra Modi said India will always stand by the new National League for Democracy (NLD) government in Myanmar. He said this during a meeting with State Counselor and Foreign Minister of Myanmar Aung San Suu Kyi on the sidelines of the 14th India-Asean Summit and the 11th East Asia Summit here. This was the first meeting between the two leaders since the Nobel peace laureate’s NLD assumed power in Myanmar in March this year. “Prime Minister complimented Daw Aung San Suu Kyi on the victory of the NLD in the elections,” External Affairs Ministry spokesperson told media. Stating that Modi welcomed Suu Kyi as an icon of democracy, he said: “The Prime Minister said India would always stand with the government and people of Myanmar as the new government strives to fulfill the aspirations of the people.” Modi also said that he was looking forward to receiving Suu Kyi in Goa next month for the BRICSBimstec Outreach Summit. India has assumed the chairmanship of BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) and has invited the leaders of the Bimstec (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) countries to the Goa summit. summit given that several countries in South Asia continue to face natural disasters, according to Swarup. “Daw Aung San Suu Kyi thanked Prime Minister and said she was looking forward to visiting India where she had always felt ‘at home’,” the spokesperson said. Suu Kyi spent a considerable part of her early life in India and was educated at Lady Shri Ram College in New Delhi. Last month, Myanmar President U Htin Kyaw was in New Delhi on his first official visit abroad after assuming charge. In the meeting, Suu Kyi briefed

the Prime Minister on the progress in the peace and reconciliation process in Myanmar even as both the sides positively assessed IndiaMyanmar security cooperation. “They discussed further cooperation in areas such as dairy farming, animal husbandry and agriculture,” Swarup said. “The Prime Minister spoke about a possible agreement on pulses which had been discussed during External Affairs Minister’s visit to Myanmar.” External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj visited Nay Pyi Taw last month following which President Kyaw came on a
four-day visit to India. Modi and Suu Kyi also discussed cooperation in the area of the countries’ shared Buddhist heritage, according to Swarup. Earlier in the day, Modi also held bilateral meetings with host and Laos Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith and South Korean President Park Geun-hye. The India-Asean Summit was being attended by the leaders of India and 10 southeast Asian nations -Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam and Thailand.
BRIEFS HC ruling against AAP’s parliamentary secretaries NEW DELHI: In a setback to the Arvind Kejriwal government, the Delhi High Court quashed the appointment of 21 parliamentary secretaries after the AAP government conceded that the Lt Governor’s approval was not taken in the matter. Following the submission of the government and in light of its recent judgement giving primacy to the LG in administrative control of the capital, a bench of Chief Justice G. Rohini and Justice Sangita Dhingra Sehgal quashed the appointments. The AAP government told the court that the appointment of 21 parliamentary secretaries was made without approval of the Lieutenant Governor. The court was hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) challenging the AAP government’s decision to appoint 21 party legislators as parliamentary secretaries. Earlier, the government had defended its decision to appoint the party MLAs as parliamentary secretaries.
Court hands death sentence to man MUMBAI: In the first such instance, a Special Court here on September 8 awarded the death penalty to a man convicted of throwing sulphuric acid on a Delhi girl in 2013. Convict Ankur Panwar was awarded death penalty in the Preeti Rathi acid attack case of May 2013. Special Women’s Court Special Judge A.S. Shende had on Tuesday found Panwar guilty of hurling sulphuric acid in Mumbai on Delhi resident Rathi, which resulted in her death a month later.
Indian rocket lifts off with advanced weather satellite IANS, SRIHARIKOTA (ANDHRA PRADESH):
A
n Indian rocket with an over two tonne INSAT3DR advanced weather satellite blasted off from the Sriharikota spaceport here on September 8 afternoon. At precisely 4.50 p.m. the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle-Development 5 (GSLVF05) rose into sky with a deep growl, breaking free from the second launch pad at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre here. The launch was delayed for 40 minutes due to a delay in fuelling the rocket’s third stage The 49.1 metre tall rocket, weighing 415.2 tonne rapidly rose towards the blue sky, spewing a
thick orange plume. The rocket would sling the INSAT-3DR satellite, which can also aid in search and rescue (SAR) operations, into a geosynchronous transfer orbit (GTO) around 17 minutes into the flight. Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) scientists at the mission control centre here are intensely peering at their monitors to observe the rocket’s progress. The GSLV is a three stage rocket. The first stage is fired by solid fuel and its four strap-on motors by liquid fuel. The second is powered by liquid fuel and the third is the ISRO-developed cryogenic engine that is more efficient as it provides more thrust for every kilogram of propellant burnt. ISRO is perfecting the crucial

cryogenic engine technology to save precious foreign exchange by launching heavier satellites on its own. ISRO currently relies on the European Space Agency’s Ariane
rocket to launch its heavy communication satellites. India pays around Rs 500 crore ($75 million) as the launch fee for sending up a 3.5 ton communication satellite. The satellite cost is
separate. ISRO can now launch satellites weighing around 2-2.5 tonnes till such time it readies an advanced GSLV variant — GSLVMark III — that can lug satellites weighing around four tonnes.

ndian origin British Labour MP Keith Vaz stepped down as chair of the Home Affairs Select Committee following allegations he paid two male prostitutes for sex and offered to cover the cost of Class A drugs at his London flat. The MP for Leicester East, has issued an apology after the Sunday Mirror reported he met and paid two Eastern European male escorts at his property in Edgware and boasted about having unprotected sex. During the meeting, the 59year-old allegedly offered to cover the cost of cocaine if it were brought to the flat, but refused to have any himself. A series of text messages published by the newspaper allegedly show Vaz asking for the legal “high poppers” to be brought to the
Bangladeshi woman, ex-partner found dead in Sydney SYDNEY: A 35-year-old Bangladeshi woman and her expartner, likely of Indian origin, were discovered dead inside a house in Australia on September 4 in a suspected murder-suicide. Their threeyear-old daughter was found sleeping in the house at the time, media reports said. The bodies of Tasmin Bahar and Dave Pillay were discovered inside the bathroom of the house in Smithfield of Sydney, Australia. Bahar had recently separated from her partner of six years, Pillay, and moved out of their Smithfield home, which they shared with their young daughter. The bodies were found allegedly by Pillay’s brother, with the couple’s three-year-old child found sleeping in another room in the house. It’s believed Pillay lured Tasmin to the couple’s formerly shared home for Father’s Day, saying he wanted to see his young daughter, The Age reported. “We told her not to go to the Smithfield house but she went for Father’s Day,” Sharagin Bahar, Tasmin’s sister, was quoted as saying. Their cousin, Sifat Sharmin Ruponty, told the Sydney Morning Herald that Tasmin had also told her about being physically threatened by Pillay, with a knife, when they were together. Sharagin Bahar told The Age from New York that she was in utter shock at the sudden death of her sister.

In a statement issued to the Mail on Sunday, Vaz, who has been chair of the Home Affairs Select Committee since 2007, said: “I am genuinely sorry for the hurt and distress that has been caused by my actions in particular to my wife
and children.” “I will be informing the Committee on Tuesday of my intention to stand aside from chairing the sessions of the Committee with immediate effect,” Vaz added. He said in a statement he believed he had been the victim of a sting operation, saying: “It is deeply disturbing that a national newspaper should have paid individuals to act in this way.” He added that he had referred the allegations to his solicitor. A friend of Vaz told the Mail on Sunday, the politician was not resigning entirely and would wait to see if he had enough support from MPs to remain on the committee. According to the Sunday Mirror, Vaz had at least two meetings with the prostitutes and had made contact with the pair through an escort they knew in London.
Sikh contestant in UK racially abused LONDON: A 28-year-old Sikh contestant on this year’s Great British Bake Off disclosed that he suffered racial abuse after appearing in the first two episodes of the hit BBC show. Rav Bansal said he was asked whether he was a “P---” by a stranger who referred to the “notso-British Bake Off”, The Telegraph reported late Friday. “So today I was asked ‘Are you the p*** on the not so British bake off?’ Really, in 2016?,” Bansal tweeted. Bansal, who resides in Erith, Kent with his parents and works at City University, was supported by his fellow contestants, who immediately rallied around to condemn the comments. Fellow contestant Benjamina Ebuehi, one of his fellow amateur bakers, responded to his tweet saying it was “so horrible”. However, Bansal is not the first contestant to have suffered racist abuse, with last year’s winner British-Muslim Nadiya Hussain has suffered at the hands of strangers.
Zika virus can live in tears: Study IANS, NEW YORK
A
team of researchers, including one of Indian origin, has found that Zika virus can live in the eyes and have identified genetic material from the virus in tears of mice. Zika virus, which is spread through mosquito bite, leads to brain damage and death in foetuses. Nearly a third of all babies infected in utero with Zika also showed
eye disease such as inflammation of the optic nerve, retinal damage or blindness after birth. In most adults, Zika causes mild disease including conjunctivitis — redness and itchiness of the eyes. However, in rare cases, it develops uveitis — a condition that can lead to permanent vision loss, the study said. To determine the effects of Zika on the eye, the team infected adult mice with mosquitoes under the skin — similar to the way humans
are infected by mosquitoes. The researchers found live virus in the eyes of the mice, even after seven days of being infected with mosquitoes. “Our study suggests that the eye could be a reservoir for Zika virus,”
said Michael S. Diamond, Professor at the Washington University. The findings confirm that Zika is able to travel to the eye. However, it is not yet known whether the virus typically makes that trip by crossing the blood-retina barrier.
Archana to showcase ‘a tale of two travels’ IANS, NEW YORK
D
esigner Archana Kochhar will showcase her collection A Tale of Two Travels, a mélange of her travels to the Taj Mahal and the village of Banjaras, at the FTL New York Fashion Week SS17 on September 8. She is also supporting the initiative ‘Bring Beauty Back’ at the fashion week, where acid attack survivor Reshma Banoo Qureshi will walk the ramp for her. “I am thrilled and excited to be showcasing my collection for the second time at the FTL New York Fashion Week SS17. A Tale of Two Travels has been inspired by my travel to the Taj Mahal and the vil-
lage of Banjaras,” Kochhar said in a statement. The collection, inspired by Banjara, is a part of the Make in India campaign. “Here, I have worked with differ-
ent sets of artisans from across India trying to revive and re-energize different art forms of India, some of which are dying. “The translation of the collection is modern, keeping the essence of
Banjara intact. My second inspiration of the collection is by the magnificent Taj Mahal. The most interesting aspect of this collection is the way the Taj has been depicted in Banjara handwriting. I feel it is a very contemporary translation of Taj which has never been attempted before”, she shared. The first inspiration of the collection is by Banjara, known for the craft of the vibrant colors and rustic mirror work in India. The color palette of this collection is ivory offset with colorful digitally printed motifs which is further highlighted with multi-color thread work and mirror work. The second inspiration of the collection is by the Taj Mahal.

Mother becomes a Saint
People flooded the Vatican to celebrate the highly-anticipated canonization of Mother Teresa, an event which Catholics and non-Catholics alike looked forward to since the nun’s death IANS, VATICAN CITY
P
ope Francis declared Nobel Peace Prize winner Mother Teresa, revered for her work among the poor in India, a Saint of the Catholic Church, last weekend. “We declare and define Blessed Teresa of Calcutta to be a Saint,” the Pope said to a roar from the thousands gathered at St. Peter’s Square here, including many Indians who held or waved the Indian flag. “We enrol her among the Saints, decreeing that she is to be venerated as such by the whole Church. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,” he said, making a longawaited announcement. Some 120,000 people attended the Mass, according to the Vatican Press Office. This included Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Chief Ministers Mamata Banerjee of West Bengal and Arvind Kejriwal of Delhi. Kejriwal had briefly worked with Mother Teresa. Crowds flooded the Vatican to celebrate the highly anticipated canonization of Mother Teresa, an event which Catholics and nonCatholics alike had looked forward to since the nun’s death in 1997.
‘Mother Teresa taught virtue of unconditional love’ NEW DELHI: Christian leaders and admirers of Mother Teresa expressed happiness at her sainthood, saying she spoke the language of love and compassion. The Catholic Bishops Conference of India (CBCI) in a tweet said: “We pray for Missionaries of Charity founded by Mother. God bless them with many vocations of girls to serve like her.” “The poor whom she loved are also ours,” it said in another tweet. John Dayal, Secretary General of All India Christian Council, said that Mother’s sainthood is another honour for the land of Mahatma Gandhi. Many arrived before dawn to get a good spot for the ceremony, the Catholic News Agency reported. In New Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the sainthood of Mother Teresa as “a memorable and proud moment” — reflecting the popular thinking in the country which Teresa made her home. Cardinal Angelo Amato read a brief biography of Mother Teresa’s work and then asked the Pope to canonize her in the name of the Church. Mother Teresa’s life was given to service and she was committed to defending life, especially the
“Mother is now officially a Saint of the Catholic Church. She always was the saintly Mother for everyone else. This only adds to the joy of everyone who admired her persona and the lesson in love and compassion she taught us.” “For us in India, the joy is personal. And honour to the land of the Mahatma. We are more blessed for these lives who lived amongst us and served the people,” he said. Former Election Commissioner Navin Chawla, who wrote Mother Teresa’s biography, said Mother’s work was great and any criticism of her was irrelevant. — IANS “unborn and those abandoned and discarded”. She was “a generous dispenser of divine mercy”. “She was committed to defending life, ceaselessly proclaiming that the unborn are the weakest, the smallest, the most vulnerable,” the Pope said. Speaking of Teresa, the Pope noted how she “bowed down before those who were spent … seeing in them their God-given dignity. “Today, I pass on this emblematic figure of womanhood and of consecrated life to the whole world of volunteers: may she be your model of holiness!”

Later, the chief minister said she felt “immensely blessed” to have witnessed the ceremony. O’Brien — dressed in the traditional Bengali wear of kurta and dhoti — and Bandopadhyay, clad in kurtapyjama, matched steps with Banerjee to witness the historic occasion for which dignitaries from across the globe congregated. Passionate about walking, Banerjee, much like in Bengal, has never let go any opportunity to cover on foot distances during her foreign visits also. During her trips to Singapore and Bhutan, Banerjee and her team would often walk their way to famous tourist attrac-
tions. Sporting small placards with the words “City of Mother Team Bengal”, the team from Bengal reached the famous holy site where Pope Francis declared the nun a Saint of the Catholic Church sending ripples of joy thousands of miles away in Kolkata - Teresa’a adopted home. At the St. Peter’s Basilica, Banerjee took a seat with the sisters of the Mother Teresa founded order Missionaries of Charity at the ceremony. “I feel immensely blessed to have witnessed the canonisation of our beloved Mother in the Vatican today,” Banerjee said in a Facebook post. “It was a moment of overwhelming pride, a moment to once again dedicate ourselves to the cause of humanity,” she said.

ithout naming Pakistan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said that strongest action should be reserved for those states that use terrorism as an instrument of state policy while outlining India’s principled stand on the South China Sea issue. “We need to target not only the terrorists, but also their entire supporting ecosystem,” Modi said while addressing the 11th East Asia Summit here, the premier forum of the Asia-Pacific region. “And, our strongest action should be reserved for those state actors who employ terrorism as an instruments of state policy,” he said. Will Modi visit Pakistan again? KARACHI/NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is looking forward to visit Pakistan in November to attend the Saarc Summit, according to India’s High Commissioner in Islamabad. But New Delhi said on Tuesday that no decision had been made yet. “Decisions and announcements of such nature are not made so far in advance,” India’s External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Vikas Swarup tweeted. Swarup’s remarks came a day after the High Commissioner, Gautam Bambawale, told an event in Karachi on Monday that the visit was possible despite tense IndiaPakistan ties. “I can’t say about the future but as of today Prime Minister Modi is looking forward to visiting Islamabad for the Saarc summit in November,” the Dawn quoted Bambawale as saying at an interactive session of the Karachi Council on Foreign Relations. He also said while India and Pakistan must certainly discuss the entire range of issues, they must keep their focus on economy which he described as a “low-hanging fruit”. His comments came amid reports that Modi might keep away from the Saarc Summit in view of the rising tensions between India and Pakistan, particularly over Jammu and Kashmir. Bambawale said it was India’s desire to see a Pakistan which was moderate, prosperous and stable and at peace with itself.

VIENTIANE (LAOS): US President Barack Obama on Thursday expressed confidence that the Goods and Services Tax (GST), passed by the Indian parliament last month, will unleash significant economic activity. He said this during a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the 11th East Asia Summit here. This could well be the last bilateral meeting between Modi and Obama before the latter demits office in January next year. According to sources, during Thursday’s meeting, both leaders reviewed the immediate priorities in the strategic partnership between the two countries.
India remained committed, including through membership of export control regimes, to pursuing total and verifiable elimination of weapons of mass destruction. Since its inception in 2005 -India is a founding member -- the East Asia Summit has played a significant role in the strategic, geopolitical and economic evolution of East Asia. Earlier on Thursday, speaking at the 14th India-Asean Summit here, he said Asean was central to India’s Act East Policy while describing the ties with southeast Asia as a “source of harmony” On the sidelines of the two summits, Modi also held bilateral meetings with US President Barack Obama, South Korean President Park Geun-hye, State Counsellor and Foreign Minister of Myanmar Aung San Suu Kyi and Laos Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith.

errorism, structural reforms, corruption and tax evasion were some of the key concerns which found mention in the joint communique released by the G20 countries on the second and last day of their Summit here on Monday. These issues were raised by India at the grouping whose economies accounts for 85 percent of the world’s GDP. India was, as its Sherpa (representative) to the Summit Arvind Panagariya said, able to “influence” the outcome of the event and 7,000-worded communique. “We strongly condemn terrorism in all forms and manifestations, which poses serious challenges to

opment,” the communique said. “In confronting terrorism, we remain committed to effectively exchanging information, freezing
terrorist assets, and criminalizing terrorist financing,” it added. Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping and heads of other member countries had raised the issue of terrorism. In his last intervention at the Summit, Modi urged the member nations to unite against terror. Without naming Pakistan, he said one single country in South Asia was spreading terror in the region. He also asked the grouping to eliminate safe tax havens which was adopted in the communique. It also stressed the grouping’s commitment to sustainable development, strong and effective support and actions to address climate change.

Jaitley, who was accompanied by central ministers M. Venkaiah Naidu and Y.S. Chowdary, said this special assistance will be for five years — 2015-2020. Karnataka shutdown on Friday over Cauvery water release IANS, BENGALURU
K
arnataka was set for a shut down on September 9 in protest against the state government releasing Cauvery river waters to Tamil Nadu on the Supreme Court’s order. “The day-long state-wide shutdown is in protest against the Supreme Court order and to express resentment over the state government releasing the water when we don’t have it for drinking and irrigation,” Kannada Okkuta (federation) president Vatal Nagaraj told reporters. Several pro-Kannada and farmers’ organisations have extended support to the shutdown, which
will disrupt normal life, with bus services suspended, schools, colleges, hotels, shops, markets, theatres, banks and factories remaining closed. “Unfortunately, Karnataka is always at the receiving end in inter-state river water disputes, bet it with Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh (Krishna river)
and Goa (Mahadayi river). Grave injustice has been meted to our state,” lamented Nagaraj. Bowing to the apex court’s order, the state began releasing daily 15,000 cusecs from Krishna Raja Sagar (KRS) and Kabini reservoirs across the river basin for 10 days amid protests and demonstrations.

N
ational Award-winning director T. S. Nagabharana, who is also the Indian Jury Chairperson for the 1st BRICS Film Festival here, says Indian cinema should not only be defined by the work of Bollywood. He added that regional cinema is “more artistic and informed”. “Indian movies are more than just Bollywood movies. There are other languages also which are more artistic and more informed so those movies should also get into such milieu,” Nagabharana told IANS in an email interview. Nagabharana, who works in Kannada film industry, has nine National Awards and 14 State Awards to his credit. He is known for films like “Grahana”, “Banker Margayya”, “ Santha Shishunala

Talking about the maiden edition of BRICS Film Festival which was held here from September 2 to 6, the director shared that the focus should not only be on
entertainment. “BRICS should have in mind that apart from entertainment, there is something experimenting that should also get marketed. The market should have sensible approach to reach these kind of films as well,” he said. Nagabharana has some ideas for the next edition. “Going forward we need to introduce few more awards, more marketing strategies and infrastructure. More than that somewhere there is a difference between film making and marketing. BRICS countries should concentrate especially to support each other in these two areas and the future is bright,” he said. The festival was a part of the special events planned in the runup to the 8th BRICS Summit to be held in India.

ctor-filmmaker Ajay Devgn has demanded an investigation against filmmaker Karan Johar, who allegedly paid Kamaal R Khan Rs 25 lakhs to tweet positive about his next film “Ae Dil Hai Mushkil” (ADHM) and give negative reviews of Devgn’s film “Shivaay”. KJo, on the other hand, has thanked his fans for giving “enormous love” to the teaser of ADHM. Karan, an active social media user, tweeted on Friday: “Thank you for this enormous love. 15 million ADHM teaser.” The film’s teaser has received 15 million views on digital platforms like Facebook and YouTube in just three days.
Kamaal R Khan, better known as KRK, has been bad mouthing Ajay’s “Shivaay” on Twitter which is clashing with Karan’s “Ae Dil Hai Mushkil”. Ajay asked his business associate Kumar Mangat to call
KRK to find out the reason behind this. In a shocking conversation KRK confessed that he has to say positive things about “Ae Dil Hai Mushkil” as he has allegedly received Rs 25 lakhs from KJo.

Diana Penty has no regrets of going on a break

ollywood actress Shilpa Shetty Kundra feels yoga can eliminate stress, and hence makes it a point to perform yoga during elimination round in children’s dance reality show “Super Dancer”. According to a source close to the production house, the actress finds it difficult to eliminate children during the audition rounds. She performs yoga during the elimination rounds. “Shilpa being a mom loves kids and can’t see any kid crying or upset during the elimination round. It’s very tough for her to go through these rounds and hence she performs yoga on the set to

ctress Diana Penty, who was seen on the silver screen in “Happy Bhag Jayegi” after a gap of four years, says she has no regrets of taking a sabbatical in her career. After her modelling stint, Diana ventured into tinsel town with “Cocktail” in 2012. But she maintained her distance from the big screen after her the blockbuster debut. “Somehow I never felt like there was a dull moment... I actually have no regrets and very happy that I waited this long. I am very glad that ‘Happy Bhag Jayegi’ came my way,” Diana told IANS over phone from Mumbai. The 30-year-old says she was never idle during the four years as she kept herself busy. “I managed to keep myself busy with my hobbies, doing things I liked, travelling. I was working as well... Along side all of these things, I also actively met people and used to read stuff hoping to find my next film,” she added.

ctor Pulkit Samrat is thankful for the love and support he got in the virtual world via Twitter -- but he has vowed to never tweet again. The actor took to the micro-blogging site to rant about reports related to his image and personal life. Pulkit was in news for his separation from wife Shweta Rohira, and his rumoured relationship with Yami Gautam. The actor on Saturday night posted: “I care a damn! damn! damn! This world is full of d**** and we entertain them! The day we stop entertaining them, we are strong! Else, we are weak!”
Ranbir willing to play homosexual
A
ctor Ranbir Kapoor says that had Pakistani actor Fawad Khan not “opened the door” by playing a homosexual character in “Kapoor & Sons”, he would have perhaps turned down an offer to play a gay on screen. But now the “Barfi!” star is receptive to the idea. The actor opened up about his professional as well as personal life in an interview taken by Vogue India journalist Raja Sen for the magazine’s September 2016 issue, which will be available on the stands from September 6, read a statement. Ranbir has lauded his contempories for taking up risky roles — be it Alia Bhatt in “Udta Punjab” or Fawad in “Kapoor & Sons”
Success, failure affects me: Abhay

e has tasted success as well as faced failure in showbiz, and actor-producer Abhay Deol says as a star “success as well as failure” of a film leaves an impression on your mind. He has delivered hits like “Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara” and “Dev. D”, and saw setbacks with duds like “Aisha” and “One by Two”. Asked if a failure of a film affects him, Abhay told IANS over phone from Mumbai: “Obviously. It is not a happy time when a film doesn’t do well...Everything affects you, success affects you and failure also affects you...You have to be inhuman (for not getting affected).

2 Indian teens picked for National poets program BY A STAFF WRITER ASHINGTON, DC -Maya Eashwaran and Gopal Raman, two Indian American teenagers, are among five students selected for the prestigious National Students Poets Program. The White House has announced that First Lady Michelle Obama will welcome the budding poets at the White House on September 8. Eashwaran, 17, is from Alpharetta in Georgia and Raman is from Dallas, Texas. The other three students selected are Stella Binion from Chicago, Joey Reisberg from Towson, Maryland, and Maya Salameh from San Diego, Calif. Since its inception in 2011, the National Student Poets Program has showcased the essential role of writing and the arts in academic and personal success for audiences across the country. Each year, the five National Student Poets are chosen from a pool of outstanding writers, grades 9-11, who have received a national Scholastic Art and Writing Award for poetry. BY A STAFF WRITER OLLING MEADOWS, IL -- A prominent Islamic scholar and longtime head of a suburban Chicago school accused of molesting an underage girl and a 23-year-old female school employee has pleaded guilty to aggravated criminal sexual abuse. Mohammed Abdullah Saleem was sentenced on August 25 to two years of probation and must register as a sex offender for the rest of his life. He was also barred from being in the presence of any female of any age, except relatives, without the presence of another adult female. The 77-year-old Saleem founded the Institute of Islamic Education in Elgin. Cook County Circuit Judge James Karahalios ruled he could not be within 500 feet of that or any other school.

Eashwaran writes about foreigners, often incorporating personal experiences dealing with assimilation in the modern age. For Raman, a senior at St. Mark’s School of Texas, poetry distills images and emotions into a form that brings people
together. He cites poets like Billy Collins, Wallace Stevens, and Walt Whitman as his inspirations. This is perhaps the first time that Indian Americans have made it to the prestigious program.
Indian student picked for MIT Launch BY A STAFF WRITER OUSTON, TX -- Cypress Woods High School (in Cypress, Texas) senior Abhinav Ashar was one of the 70 students selected to attend a highly selective summer entrepreneurship program, MIT Launch, at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, Mass. MIT Launch brings together high school students from all over the nation and world each summer to MIT campus to become teenage entrepreneurs. The experience connects students to many successful entrepreneurial networks and leaders across the MIT campus for instruction and best practices. Through the program, Ashar and his team--comprising three other students from Brazil, Singapore and Maryland-have developed a product that reduces the number of infant mortality cases linked to a lack of oxygen.

The team has launched a company called LyfeBand, which is in the process of developing an infant wearable that alerts caretakers when a child experiences
low blood-oxygen levels from suffocation or some pre-existing illness. The Indian American youth and his team have also filed for a provisional patent on their innovative technology. LyfeBand is dedicated to addressing a worldwide problem of “infant asphyxiation” at a low cost. Every year, three million infants die due to preventable causes and the window of opportunity to save an infant is often only four minutes. The team was put together based on entrepreneurial preferences, so they only met each other after arriving at the program. They went through a series of brain-storming sessions to come up with their idea. According to Ashar, the best part of MIT Launch was having the flexibility to use MIT resources, labs and network to find a solution. Their team received guidance from MIT and Harvard Engineering professors along with MIT students.
Purvi Patel
BY A STAFF WRITER NDIANAPOLIS, IN -- Purvi Patel, the Indian American woman from Indiana who went through hell and back after she went through the trauma of an abortion, is finally a free woman. Patel, who was ostracized and castigated after being convicted of charges of feticide and sentenced to 20 years in prison, walked out of prison in Indianapolis, on September 1, a day after a judge resentenced her to less time than she had already served and ordered her immediate release. Patel, 35, whose charges were overturned in July, was with relatives when she left the Indiana Women’s Prison in Indianapolis about 10 am, said Indiana Department of Correction spokesman Doug Garrison. Her attorney, Lawrence Marshall, said Patel was “very, very joyful that this day has come,” but that she now needed privacy so that she could focus on rebuilding her life. “For right now, she needs to recover from what were obviously traumatic years,” said Marshall, a Stanford University law professor. “She has to take her life and try to make something meaningful out of all the wreckage that got her here.”

BY A STAFF WRITER LPINE, TX – The police in the West Texas town of Alpine say there is an “active shooter” situation at a high school and schools have been locked down amid the search for a suspect. Elizabeth Carter, a lieutenant with the Texas Department of Public Safety, said someone brought a gun onto the Alpine High School campus on September 6 morning. Ruth Hucke, a spokeswoman for Big Bend Regional Medical Center in Alpine, said hospital personnel were tending to three “victims.” Hucke declined to say how the victims were injured or further identify them. Dodson says the injured student ran outside seeking help and was taken to a hospital with injuries that weren’t considered life threatening. He says a law enforcement officer also suffered injuries that weren’t life threatening, but no details have been released. Police dispatcher Scarlet Eldred said an unspecified incident took place at the high school shortly before 9 am and the police were seeking a male “active shooter.” Alpine town of about 5,900 residents has three schools. Bad at maths?
Blame your parents NEW YORK: Parents who excel at mathematics produce children who would also excel, says a study, which shows a distinct transfer of math skills from parent to child. The study specifically explored inter-generational transmission -the concept of parental influence on an offspring’s behavior or psychology -- in mathematic capabilities. “Our findings suggest an intuitive
Specifically, major correlations in parent-child performance in such key areas as mathematical computations, number-fact recall, and word problem analysis were observed. In addition, the children’s intuitive sense of numbers - that is, the ability to know that 20 jelly beans are more than 10 jelly beans without first counting them - is predicted by their parents’ intuitive sense of num-
She said: “Patient is injected with hormonal drugs for 10 to 12 days to stimulate her ovaries to produce more eggs than normal. During which she could experience menopause-like symptoms. So doctors monitor to ensure that her ovaries are not dangerously over-
stimulated.” The eggs are then retrieved under sedation or general anesthesia using an ultrasoundguided needle that sucks the eggs from each follicle and are stored. When the woman is ready to use her frozen eggs, they are warmed up, injected with sperm and left to fertilizes on a petri dish. If successful zygotes are formed, then two to three of these are transferred to her uterus with the hope that would impregnate,” said Agarwal. Naina Raichand, a gynaecologist at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, advised egg freezing as the best alternative for working women to ensure pregnancy even above the 35 years age group. Raichand said: “If a couple is not financially stable and prefer to attain some monitory comfort before welcoming a new member then this technique is best.”
NEW YORK: At the dinner table, babies pay close attention to what food is being eaten around them -and especially who is eating it, suggests an interesting study. The findings showed that oneyear-old infants expect people to like the same food, unless those people belong to different social or cultural groups, such as those that speak a different language. “Kids are sensitive to cultural groups early in life. When babies see someone eat, they are not just learning about food -- they are also learning about who eats what with whom,” said Katherine Kinzler, Associate Professor at the Cornell University in New York, US. The study supported the wellknown fact in developmental psychology that babies will look longer at novel actions or things that deviate from their general expectations of the world. Moreover, parents might need to consider that their children are watching as they eat together.

ove to wear designer perfumes? Be careful, as certain molecules produced in these man-made fragrances act as potential contaminants of the environment, and may also impact our ecosystem in the long run, said a study conducted in the canals of Venice, also known as the city without sewers. Investigating the canals of Venice, the researchers looked for traces of molecules referred to as "perfumes" in the ingredients of products such as soaps, detergents, shampoos and many other personal hygiene prod-
ucts that we use daily. The findings showed traces of "scented" molecules, including those more distant from inhabited areas, though concentrations were up to 500 times higher in the inner
city canals. Samples collected during conditions of low tide showed concentrations comparable to those of untreated waste water, the study revealed.

sense for numbers has been passed down knowingly or unknowingly from parent to child. Meaning, the math skills of parents tend to ‘rub off’ on their children,” said lead researcher Melissa E. Libertus, Assistant Professor at University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania, US. The study revealed that the performance levels for early schoolaged children on standardized mathematic tests could be reliably predicted by their parent’s performance in similar examinations.
bers, the researchers said. “We believe the relationship between a parent and a child’s math capabilities could be some combination of hereditary and environmental transmission,” Libertus added. The findings represent the first evidence of intergenerational transmission of unlearned, nonverbal numerical competence from parents to children. The study is an important step toward understanding the multifaceted parental influences on children’s mathematic abilities.
ewelry pieces play an important role in a womans life. And this wedding season, choker jewellery and polki neckpieces are in vogue, says an expert. Sandeep Narang, Chief Designer and Managing Director, Hazoorilal by Sandeep Narang, shares some tips on how to look stunning with the right jewelry pieces: Choker jewellery: Choker jewellery is surely in vogue. Add charm to the look of your wedding season with a choker piece. You can pair your choker piece with a long necklace to complete the bridal look. You can also customize your long necklace or polki necklace to match the choker piece for a showstopping entry.
T h e polki choker is a timeless piece of jewellery which has a great repeat value. As a classic piece, it can been passed down to the next generation who are fond of wearing such standalone pieces rather than full sets.
Evening special: Diamonds are forever, and a solitaire diamond neckpiece is the one statement piece which spells grandeur as well as elegance. Club your favorite evening gown with sparkling solitaire set to a wedding reception, a cocktail party or any other do in the evening. Polki neckpiece: Polki sets are now becoming a popular choice amongst the women because of the antiquity and royal look it offers. A polki necklace studded with ethereal south sea pearls, diamonds and rubies is a great choice to complement any ensemble - be it contemporary, modern or traditional wedding wear.

VR to spot brain disorders
Early ultrasounds linked to autism

Artificial intelligence may help spot lung diseases LONDON: Artificial Intelligence (AI) or machine learning can be used to help improve the accuracy of the diagnosis in lung diseases, finds a study. Machine learning utilises algorithms that can learn from and perform predictive data analysis. The team developed an algorithm process in addition to the routine lung function parameters and clinical variables of smoking history, body mass index (BMI) and age. Based on the pattern of both the clinical and lung function data, the algorithm makes a suggestion for
the most likely diagnosis. Currently, clinicians rely on analysing the results using population-based parameters. But with AI-based solutions, the machine can observe a combination of patterns at one time to help produce a more accurate diagnosis.
sor monitors. Diagnosis provides results of deviations in the 20 points,” said David Khachaturyan, scientist at Tomsk Polytechnic University in Russia. The team tested the system on about 50 volunteers to see how VR influences people.
The procedure, which took almost 10 minutes, engaged both healthy people and those in whom doctors already identified the neuro-degenerative disorders. The scientists made use of the existing VR devices such as Google Glass and Microsoft Kinect sensor system for the research. In addition, the system can also identify “how people with different diseases react to a virtual environment. For instance, people with Parkinson’s disease get hand tremors -- quick, rhythmic limb movements,” the authors said. In neuro-degenerative diseases, an individual suffers a progressive loss of nerve cells and coordination are primarily affected. “These coordinated systems operate automatically. They falter if a person is affected by neuro-degenerative diseases,” added Ivan Tolmachov, Associate Professor at Siberian State Medical University in Tomsk.
Hookahs can cause cancer
“Since hookah involves inhaling a large amount of smoke in a short span of time, the damage done to the lungs is high and can cause wheezing, meningitis and acute
bronchitis,” Singhal said. “Over a period of time, it can develop into cardiovascular and respiratory illnesses, lead to low birth weight, lung, esophageal and pancreatic cancer. Sadly, not many hookah smokers understand the implications as many think hookah is not as harmful as cigarette,” Singhal added. The World Health Organization (WHO) says tobacco causes over five million deaths world wide which is likely to increase to 8.4 million if the situation is not brought under control. Doctors said that hookah smokers may be at risk for some of the same diseases as cigarette smokers.
-- from birth till the age of 17. Students also reported on their psychological functioning and symptoms of depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder.
Experiencing bullying was the strongest predicator of PTSD symptoms among the college students, surpassing other types of trauma such as exposure to community violence or being abused or neglected by adults. “Bullying victimization significantly predicated students’ current levels of depression and anxiety -over and above other childhood victimization experiences.” said Dorothy Espelage, researcher at the University of Illinois. This research suggested that college students’ psychological distress may be connected in part to their perceptions of past childhood bullying victimization experiences,” Dorothy added.

moking a hookah can be more harmful than cigarettes and can cause diseases like cancers much more easily, doctors say. According to Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), an hour-long hookah smoking session involves 200 puffs, while smoking an average cigarette involves 20 puffs. “In fact second-hand smoke from hookahs can also be a health risk for non-smokers. It contains smoke from the tobacco as well as smoke from the heat source used in the hookah,” said Amar Singhal, Cardiologist at the Sri Balaji Action Medical Institute, New Delhi.

omen who were bullied in their childhood are more likely to struggle with emotional damage, greater levels of depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) than their male peers, according to a study. The study, published by the
journal Social Psychology of Education mentions that childhood bullying inflicts the same longterm psychological trauma on girls as severe physical or sexual abuse and may linger for years, negatively affecting victims’ mental health and wellbeing into young adulthood. For the study, the researchers involved 480 college student participants and surveyed
NEW YORK: Exposure to diagnostic ultrasound in the first trimester of pregnancy is linked to increased autism severity, say researchers. The greatest link is among foetus with certain genetic variations that can lead to autism, the study said. “For kids with autism who have known genetic problems, ultrasound could be an environmental stressor that pushes them to having worst outcomes” Sara Webb from the University of Washington, was quoted as saying to komonews.com. Previous research showed ultrasound exposure in-utero caused mice to exhibit autistic-like symptoms. However, the new study analysed the variability of symptoms among kids with autism, not what causes autism, the researchers stated.
