n his latest radio telecast via Mann Ki Baat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said that Suraaj (good governance), like Swaraj (self rule), is the “birthright” of every Indian and they should have it. Remembering freedom fighter Bal Gangadhar Tilak — who was born on July 23, 1856 and died on August 1, 1920 — Modi said: “Lokmanya Tilak evoked self-confidence amongst our countrymen and gave the slogan ‘Swaraj is our birth right and I shall have it’. Today is the time to say that good governance is our birth right and we will have it.” “Every Indian should have access to good governance and positive results of development. It is the factoring in of this outreach that will create a new India,” he said in his monthly radio show. During his election campaign in 2014, Modi had frequently

promised the people that he would ensure “good governance.” The Prime Minister also remembered revolutionary freedom fighters Chandra Shekhar Azad, Ashfaqullah Khan and Bhagat Singh. Azad was born on July 23, 1906. “After 50 years of Tilak’s birth,

Trump warns Iran’s trading partners Trump described his administration’s re-imposition of sanctions on Iran, which hit the country’s access to dollars, gold and precious metals, as ‘the most biting ever imposed’ IANS, WASHINGTON

Iran rejects talks with US over ‘erratic policies’

U

S President Donald Trump this week issued a strong warning to America’s trading partners that anyone who does business with Tehran will not be doing business with Washington, following his administration’s re-imposition of sanctions on Iran. Trump described the new sanctions, which hit Iran’s access to dollars, gold and precious metals, as “the most biting ever imposed”. “In November they ratchet up to yet another level,” he tweeted. “Anyone doing business with Iran will not be doing business with the US. I am asking for world peace, nothing less!” Some re-imposed sanctions already took effect and tougher ones relating to oil exports will begin in November. The sanctions followed the US withdrawal from

BRIEFS US to impose more sanctions on Moscow WASHINGTON: The US is set to impose more sanctions on Moscow over the poisoning of a former Russian spy and his daughter using a Soviet-era nerve agent in the UK earlier this year, the State Department announced. In a statement this week, Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said the US had made this decision on Monday and accused Russia of violating international law, reports CNN. The statement anticipated that the sanctions would go into effect around August 22 in line with the Chemical and Biological Weapons Control and Warfare Elimination Act of 1991.

Tlaib set to become first Muslim woman in US Congress WASHINGTON: Rashida Tlaib is set to become the first Muslim woman elected to Congress. She won a Democratic nomination and will not be opposed by the Republicans in November. Tlaib will also be the first Palestinian-American congresswoman. There will be two all-female races in Washington state. the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, also known as the Iran nuclear deal, earlier this year. Orchestrated by the Obama administration, the agreement was signed in 2015 between Iran and

China, France, Russia, the US, the UK, plus Germany and the EU. It was aimed to restrict Iran’s nuclear programme in return for the lifting of international sanctions.

TEHRAN: Iran has again ruled out any negotiation with the US, accusing it of pursuing “erratic policies” in dealing with the Islamic republic. “The Americans have never acted with sincerity, and President Donald Trump’s move and remarks to invite Iran for talks were merely a propaganda stunt,” the state TV quoted Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif as saying this week after the cabinet meeting, news agency Xinhua reported. —IANS

Trump’s new warning appeared to be aimed at the EU, which is attempting to protect European businesses trading in Iran from facing US sanctions, according to CNN. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani called the measures “psychological warfare” which aimed to “sow division among Iranians”. The sanctions take aim at various sectors, with further punitive action planned against Iran’s oil trade. Rouhani said the US government had “turned their back on diplomacy” with the action. “They want to launch psychological warfare against the Iranian nation,” he said. However, the Iranian President also said that he was willing to hold talks with Washington to resolve the matter. He indicated that Iran would want the US to scale back sanctions before any talks could begin.

Mueller’s Trump interview offer gets response IANS, WASHINGTON

L

awyers for US President Donald Trump said they have responded to the latest proposal from special counsel Robert Mueller over a potential interview with the president as part of the wide-ranging Russia probe. “We have responded in writing to the latest proposal from Office of Special Counsel regarding the request to interview the President,” Trump’s lawyer Jay Sekulow said in a statement this week, Xinhua news agency reported. “It is not appropriate, at this time, to comment publicly about the content of that response.” Rudy Giuliani, another lawyer for the president, reportedly rejected Mueller’s terms.

Robert Mueller (File Photo IANS)

Trump’s legal team has also suggested a narrow path for answering questions and do not want the president to be asked by investigators about whether he obstructed justice, according to The New York Times, citing sources familiar with

matter. The two sides have gone back and forth for months over the scope and conditions of an interview with Trump, raising speculation that Mueller would seek a subpoena for the president, a move set to prompt a high-stakes legal

battle. Mueller is looking into the alleged Russian interference in the 2016 US presidential election and any potential collusion between the Trump campaign and Moscow, among other matters that may arise from the investigation. Mueller’s team has questions for Trump over the firing of FBI Director James Comey last year and his public criticism of Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who rescued himself from the Russia investigation against the president’s wishes. It was reported earlier this month that Mueller has offered to reduce the number of obstructionrelated questions that investigators would ask the president but wants obstruction to be addressed in person, not just in written answers.

US pledges $300mn for security cooperation IANS, SINGAPORE

U Mike Pompeo (Photo: IANS)

S Secretary of State Mike Pompeo last week announced a new $300 million fund for security cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region where Washington and Beijing are competing for influence. “As part of our commitment to advancing regional security in the Indo-Pacific, the US is excited to announce $300 million of new funding to reinforce security cooperation throughout the entire region,” Pompeo told a press brief-

ing on the sidelines of a meeting of Foreign Ministers from the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) in Singapore. The new security assistance is designed for maritime security, humanitarian assistance and peacekeeping capabilities, and countering transnational threats, Efe news reported. “This new security assistance will advance our priorities, especially strengthening maritime security, developing humanitarian assistance and peacekeeping capa-

bilities,” Pompeo said. Earlier this week, the US said it will invest $113 million in technology, energy and infrastructure initiatives. The top US official said that he discussed Chinese militarization of the South China Sea and the importance of a rules-based order in the region with the Asean nations. He also highlighted US President Donald Trump’s commitment to the Indo-Pacific strategy as a major engine for economic growth.

efense Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Wednesday night dismissed as “fabricated” the allegations by former BJP ministers Arun Shourie and Yashwant Sinha that the Modi government’s deal to buy Rafale jets from France was the “biggest defense scandal” in the country. “All allegations being levelled in various press conferences are already answered on the floor of the Parliament. A recent attempt, in the House, to malign the government through baseless charges collapsed. Today’s was yet another attempt at repeating fabricated facts,” Sithara-

BRIEFS 15 Maoists killed in Chhattisgarh, 2 held RAIPUR: Fifteen Maoist guerrillas were killed and two others, including a senior cadre and an injured woman rebel, were held after a gun battle with security forces in Chhattisgarh’s Sukma district on Monday, police said. The fighting started around 6.15 a.m. near a village forest in Miltkatong area when the District Reserve Guard (DRG) of the Chhattisgarh Police force, who are trained to fight the Maoists — were out on an antiinsurgency operation. The gun battle took place at a spot situated between Gollappalli and Konta, hotbeds of insurgency around 490 km from here. Police said the firing lasted for around one-and-a-half hours and an unknown number of fighters managed to flee from the spot.

Harivansh was fielded by the BJP-led ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA). He defeated opposition candidate B.K. Hariprasad of the Congress by 20 votes. Harivansh got 125 votes while Hariprasad got 105 votes. man said in a late night tweet. The tweet came in response to Sinha and Shourie’s allegation that the Rafale jet deal was “unilaterally” finalized by Prime Minister Narendra Modi by violating mandatory procedures, and the scandal was “larger than any thus far”. They sought a time-bound probe by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India and asked the government to come clean on the issue. Activist-lawyer Prashant Bhushan, who addressed the media with the former National Democratic Alliance (NDA) ministers, said the manner in which the order for Rafale jets was changed made for a “clear case of criminal misconduct”.

“If the Modi government had stuck to the old deal (negotiated by the UPA government), we could have already got 18 aircraft in flyaway condition and production would have started on the rest of 108 in India. “But a new deal of 36 aircraft was finalized without due procedure. Ye raat ko ilhaam kahan se aaya (When did this divine revelation come)?” Shourie asked. “A new deal was finalized without floating any fresh tenders and the public was given to believe that we would get these aircraft in ready-to-fly condition within two years. But the fact is that we will get all the 36 in batches that would complete by mid 2022.”

LUCKNOW: The Uttar Pradesh government on Monday transferred the district magistrate of Deoria following reports of an alleged sex racket being run at a shelter home for women in the district, an official said. In a chilling similarity to the Muzaffarpur shelter home case in Bihar, 24 girls were rescued from the shelter in Deoria late on Sunday after one of them told the police that they were being sexually abused.

Officials told IANS that 18 girls are missing from the privately-run shelter home which earlier got funds from the government, but whose affiliation to the women and child welfare department was cancelled last year after a CBI probe revealed some discrepancies. Verma was innocent. The Patna High Court is monitoring the CBI probe into the shocking rape of 34 minor girls at the Muzaffarpur shelter home, a horror that has caused nationwide outrage. “I demand through you (media)

to the High Court to bring out CDR (call details record) of Brajesh Thakur and make it clear whether my husband was the only one who was talking to him or there were other people too,” Verma said.

Sources said para commandos were rushed to augment the troops engaged in the gunfight on the border sector that usually remains peaceful. The identities of the dead soldiers were being withheld till their families are informed. The spokesman said the militants were given cover fire by the Pakistan Army by resorting to ceasefire violation to divert the attention of the troops on the LoC. Delhi’s open space a boon for artists

A total of 3,29,91,384 people had applied for inclusion of their names in the NRC document, but 40,07,707 had been left out in the draft due to some discrepancies in their documents. (Photo: IANS)

An under-explored concept in Indian arts ecosystem is giving wings to talent IANS, NEW DELHI

A

Assam ‘aliens’ electoral fodder for BJP, Congress The latest row over NRC can be the continuation of the anti-foreigner agitation that began in the 1980s AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI

E

ver since the former saffron stalwart, Arun Shourie, created a stir in the 1980s with his articles on illegal immigrants in Assam comprising Bangladeshi Muslims, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has seen the issue as an excellent one to furbish its nationalist credentials by portraying the “aliens” as a security threat. The depiction also fitted in with the party’s antiMuslim worldview. The latest row over the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the state can be regarded, therefore, as a continuation of the anti-foreigner agitation conducted by the All Assam Student Union (AASU) in the 1980s. Although the lead has been taken this time by the BJP, while its ally in the state government, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), which is the AASU’s successor, is maintaining a low profile. However, a solution to the problem of “foreigners” is not simple. Since Assam has long been a province of immigrants with the tea-plantation laborers having been brought in from the tribal areas in Bihar by the colonial rulers and the “hardy” peasants of East Bengal being encouraged to settle down in the state in the pre-partition period to cultivate land, Assam has

become a mosaic of various communities, including its own tribals. Untangling the medley of the diverse ethnic groups is fraught, therefore, with the likelihood of creating tension leading to violence, although Mamata Banerjee’s outbursts about a “civil war” and a “bloodbath” are an overstatement. Her objective is obviously to consolidate her own pro-Muslim and “liberal” supporters in West Bengal and elsewhere in the context of her prime ministerial ambitions.

Since Assam has long been a province for immigrants from Bihar and East Bengal during the prepartition period, it has become a mosaic of various communities However, it is the near-certainty of a volatile outcome of the detection and deportation of the “foreigners” mandated by the Assam accord of 1985 which has come in the way of implementing the central point of the agreement. This “failure” was not so much the result of the Congress’s “appeasement” of Muslims, as the BJP alleges, as the need to proceed with caution.

The same advice is now being given by the Supreme Court, under whose aegis the enumeration of the citizens is being conducted. Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, too, has been favoring circumspection with the assurance that all opportunities will be given to the four million people excluded from the NRC to prove their bona fides. In contrast, BJP president Amit Shah has virtually disenfranchised the four million by dubbing them ghuspetias (infiltrators), while the Advocate General has told the Supreme Court that their biometric details will be collected, so that they may not settle down in other states. What is more, the BJP leaders are talking in terms of similar headcounts in other states, especially West Bengal, which is believed to harbor a substantial number of Bangladeshi infiltrators. It appears, therefore, that even before the NRC’s final report has been prepared, the BJP is seeing the exercise as a means of raising the fear of the nation being overrun by aliens. The party evidently believes that such charges will help it in the forthcoming elections while its opponents seem to believe that the fear will make the minorities support the “secular” parties. To both the groups, the hapless individuals are nothing but electoral fodder.

critical presence in an arts residency is a source of a counter opinion, and can be a real boon for young ideating artists, said Serendipity Arts Foundation Director Smriti Rajgarhia on housing a resident critic — an under-explored concept in the Indian arts ecosystem. The second edition of the three-month Dharti Arts Residency, ongoing since May 14, will come to a close on August 10. It is giving access to material resources, mentorship and a physical space to four emerging artists to create works of art. The motive, Rajgarhia said, is not just giving material grants, but to introduce them to a larger network and support system for their practice. The relatively new concept of a critic-in-residence was a suggestion the foundation readily agreed upon. Speaking to IANS, Rajgharia said “an artist needs an antithesis to be able to ideate, which makes for a critique, and was an important dialectic for us”. How is the process of being a resident art critic then, in contrast to writing on it afterwards? “When you are a critic writing on art, you encounter finished work in a gallery space or an exhibition space. But in a residency, you are actually responding to the progress of the work,” said resident critic Kamayani Sharma.

Framing residencies as significant experimental spaces, Sharma said they provide the feedback that may improve their art practice. “The program involved going to many exhibitions and museums, as well as meeting a lot of artists. Just seeing established artists working informs your own approach to work. But that doesn’t happen often, making residencies all the more important.”

Dharti Arts Residency provides the artistic freedom, allowing artists to venture into multiple art forms The annual, interdisciplinary residency is known for providing the artistic freedom that comes with an in-house project, allowing artists to venture into multiple art forms. Unconventional, interdisciplinary works by the four young artists-in-residence — Pannaga Jois, Ravi Kumar Chaurasiya, Khushbu Patel, and Jagrut Raval — near completion, just as the final month of the residency seems to end. The residency’s program has been designed by art curator Gayatri Uppal. The works will be featured at Serendipity Arts Festival in Goa in December.

Trade war: China hits back at US with new tariffs The 25 per cent tariffs will come into effect on August 23 and target 333 US products including coal, bicycles, trucks, vehicle engines and chemicals GAURAV SHARMA, BEIJING

C

hina on Wednesday announced that it will slap additional 25 per cent tariff on $16 billion worth of US products in retaliation to Washington’s latest round of duties, escalating the trade battle between the two countries. The 25 per cent tariffs will come into effect on August 23 and target 333 US products including coal, bicycles, trucks, vehicle engines and chemicals, the Customs Tariff Commission of the State Council said. The move came after US President Donald Trump on Tuesday announced similar tariffs on China, affecting imports such as electronic parts, plastics, chemicals, batteries and railway cars. In a statement, the Chinese Commerce Ministry said that the US once again put domestic law

New quake jolts Indonesia’s Lombok JAKARTA: An earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale struck Indonesia’s Lombok Island on Thursday, less than a week after a major earthquake in the region left at least 168 people dead, more than 1,500 injured and 156,000 affected. The US Geological Survey said the hypocenter was located at a depth of 10 km and 23 km from Mataram, the capital of the province, reports Efe news. The quake caused people to rush out of their houses and damaged some buildings, National Agency for Disaster Management (BNPB) spokesperson Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said. In an earlier tweet, Sutopo had raised the death toll from the 6.9 magnitude quake that struck the island on Sunday to 168, adding that official data on casualties was slow due to the verification process. He referred to informal figures provided by other entities, which in one case put the number of deaths at 381. The agency also reported that 1,467 people have been hospitalized and more than 156,000 displaced. The search and rescue teams on Thursday continue to try to locate victims or survivors under the rubble of thousands of demolished buildings. The Sunday quake occurred a week after another 6.4magnitude tremor struck Lombok and left 16 people dead, 355 injured and 1,500 buildings destroyed.

above international law by imposing “very unreasonable” new tariffs on Chinese goods. Beijing will implement the tariff measure with

the US simultaneously, the ministry said. The tariffs mark the latest round in a protracted trade battle

between Trump and China, with tens of billions of dollars in tariffs against Beijing already in effect. China has hit back with retaliatory tariffs, many of which targeted agricultural industries in states in the midwest that overwhelming went for Trump in 2016. The Department of Agriculture earlier announced a $12 billion aid plan to help farmers affected by Chinese tariffs, despite criticism from lawmakers in both parties. Trump also imposed steep tariffs on imported steel and aluminum from Canada, Mexico and the EU. Businesses in the US complained that the tariffs were forcing them to raise prices and eliminate jobs. Earlier, Trump asserted that the measures were “working big time”, and again vowed to imposed tariffs against countries that doesn’t want to “make or build” products in the US.

Sharif’s son-in-law ‘proclaimed offender’ ISLAMABAD: An accountability court on Tuesday declared Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif’s son-inlaw a “proclaimed offender” after he failed to appear before the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in a corruption case. The court’s decision came following a request by Pakistan’s anti-corruption body NAB. Imran Ali Yousaf is accused of receiving Rs 12 million graft money from Ikram Naveed, the former CEO of the Punjab Power Development Company (PPDC), and is the subject of a NAB probe, Dawn online reported. Yousaf appeared before NAB investigators in April but has since missed his scheduled hearings and left the country for London. The NAB, which in July requested the Interior Ministry to extradite Yousaf via Interpol, on Tuesday told the court that “warrant of arrest against the accused has been issued by NAB chairman”. “As per the investigation officer, the accused has gone underground and is not traceable,” the body said. Sharif’s son-in-law was also accused of “getting Naveed appointed as PPDC CEO who allegedly committed massive corruption”.

ndian American business executive Indra K. Nooyi will step down as the Chief Executive of food and beverage major PepsiCo Inc in October, the company said this week. According to the US-based multinational, Nooyi, 62, will step down on October 3 after 24 years with the company, the last 12 as the CEO. However, Nooyi will remain the Chairman of the company until early 2019, Pepsico said. She will be succeeded by Ramon Laguarta, 54, as the Chief Executive Officer. “Growing up in India, I never imagined I’d have the opportunity to lead such an extraordinary company,” Nooyi was quoted as saying in a company statement. “Guided by our philosophy of ‘Performance with Purpose’ — delivering sustained performance while making more nutritious products, limiting our environmental footprint and lifting up all the communities we serve, we’ve made a more meaningful impact in people’s lives than I ever dreamed possible,” “PepsiCo today is in a strong position for continued growth

with its brightest days still ahead.” While Nooyi departs, the rest of PepsiCo’s senior leadership team will remain unchanged. Speaking on behalf of PepsiCo’s Board of Directors, presiding director Ian Cook said: “As Chairman and CEO, Indra has provided outstanding leadership over the past 12 years, serving as a model

both within our industry and beyond for responsible corporate stewardship in the 21st century. “As CEO, she grew revenue more than 80 per cent, outperforming our peers and adding a new billion-dollar brand almost every other year. And shareholders have benefited: $1,000 invested in PepsiCo in 2006 is worth more

“As one of the first Fortune 100 CEOs to embed sustainability targets into business operations, Indra was a pioneer, paving the way for a new generation of business leaders who seek to ‘do well by doing good’. “Under her leadership, PepsiCo grew its portfolio of ‘Good for You and Better for You’ options from about 38 per cent of revenue in 2006 to roughly 50 per cent in 2017, almost tripled its investments in research and development to expand its more nutritious offerings and minimize its environmental impact, and achieved global recognition for the company’s work in communities around the world.”

SAN FRANCISCO: An elderly Sikh man was viciously attacked in California, leading to fears among the community that he may have been a victim of hate crime, the media reported. On August 8, two teenagers aged 16 and 18, were arrested in connection with the assault on Sahib Singh Natt, 71, in Manteca which took place on August 6 morning, reports CNN. The incident caught on a resident’s surveillance camera shows Natt walking around a park, when two men confronted him, kicked him several times and spat on him, police in Manteca said. In the video, the suspects appear to walk away, and then one of them returns, kicking the man several more times while he is still on the ground, reports ABC News. Hundreds of people gathered on August 7 night at Greystone Park in Manteca, just feet away from where Natt was beaten. Supporters, community leaders and neighbors of the victim voiced their concerns about the attacks. “It’s not an attack on an individual, it’s an attack on an entire community,” said one speaker. —IANS

Sunita Williams among 9 astronauts to fly into space IANS, WASHINGTON

ndian-origin astronaut Sunita Williams is among the nine astronauts named by NASA on Friday for its first human spaceflight programme from the US soil since the retirement of the space shuttle in 2011. The astronauts will fly on the spacecraft developed by Elon Muskowned SpaceX’s Crew Dragon and global aviation firm Boeing’s CST100 Starliner, as part of the US space agency’s Commercial Crew programme to send humans to the ISS on private US spacecraft. Williams has been named for the Boeing programme to the ISS — the first test flight scheduled to take place in the middle of 2019. “For the first time since 2011, we are on the brink of launching American astronauts on American rockets from American soil,” said NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine. Born in Euclid (Ohio), Williams came to NASA from the Navy where she was a test pilot and rose to the rank of captain before retiring. Since her selection as an astronaut

in 1998, she has spent 322 days aboard the International Space Station (ISS) for Expeditions 14/15 and Expeditions 32/33, commanded the space station and performed seven spacewalks, the US space agency said in a statement. “The men and women we assign to these first flights are at the fore-

front of this exciting new time for human spaceflight,” said Mark Geyer, director of NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston. “It will be thrilling to see our astronauts lift off from American soil, and we can’t wait to see them aboard the ISS,” he added. In 2014, Boeing and SpaceX were

awarded a combined $6.8 billion in contracts from NASA to develop spacecraft capable of flying crews to the space station. SpaceX is targeting November 2018 for Crew Dragon’s first uncrewed demonstration mission (Demo-1), three months later than the previous schedule released by

NASA early this year. The crewed demonstration flight, with two astronauts on board, will follow in April 2019, four months later than previously announced. Boeing’s CST-100 Starliner, on the other hand, will likely perform two crucial test flights next year, instead of this year as planned. Each test flight will provide data on the performance of the rockets, spacecraft, ground systems, and operations to ensure the systems are safe to fly astronauts. The crew for Boeing’s Crew Flight Test and SpaceX’s Demo-2 flights will each include at least a flight commander and pilot aboard to test out the systems. After successful completion of the flight tests with crew, NASA will review flight data to verify that the systems meet the agency’s safety and performance certification requirements and are ready to begin regular servicing missions to the space station, the US space agency said. Additional crew members will be assigned by NASA’s international partners at a later date.

uthuvel Karunanidhi was one of the last links to the Dravidian movement that ushered in the rise of backward classes in politics and the end of Congress rule in Tamil Nadu five decades ago on the plank of social justice. A five-time Chief Minister, the 94-year-old Karunanidhi, who strode the public life of Tamil Nadu like a colossus, also played a key role in national politics when he aligned with Indira Gandhi in 1971 and reaped rich rewards in elections. But, he staunchly opposed the Emergency of 1975-77 during which his government was dismissed on corruption charges. He was banished to the opposition ranks till the death of his friendturned-foe and iconic film hero M.G. Ramachandran or MGR in December 1987. Under Karunanidhi, the DMK occupied a prime position in the UPA governments at the Centre in 2004 and 2009 and earlier in the NDA government under Atal Bihari Vajpyee, an alignment that surprised

Two dead in Chennai stampede CHENNAI: Two persons were killed and 35 suffered minor injuries this week in a stampede outside the Rajaji Hall as hundreds of thousands thronged for a final glimpse of DMK leader M. Karunanidhi, a hospital official said. A senior official of the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital told IANS: “Two persons were brought dead to the hospital with injuries arising due to trampling. One is a woman, Shanbagam, while the other person is an unidentified male.” The dead woman was said to be 60 years old. The official added that another 35 persons were brought to the hospital with minor injuries. Some were dehy-

1924, Karunanidhi was a multifaceted personality — journalist, playwright, script writer — whose fiery dialogues as an iconoclast in films unleashed changes in Tamil Nadu’s social scene. He joined the Dravidian movement as a teenager under the tutelage of the late social reformer ‘Periyar’ E.V. Ramasamy and Anna. ‘Kalaignar’, as Karunanidhi

was called for his proficiency in arts and literature, fashioned theatre and cinema in a way that gave a fillip to the Dravidian movement and the rise of DMK as a major pole in Tamil Nadu. Karunanidhi’s political fortunes rose when Anna broke away from the DK to float the DMK in 1949. The box office hit of Tamil movie Parasakthi for which he wrote the

script and a rail roko agitation in Kallakudi near Tiruchirapalli made him known throughout the state. He ascended to the DMK throne and the Chief Ministership following the death of party founder Annadurai in 1969. Karunanidhi had the party in his strong grip till the end, despite presiding over two major splits and being out of power continuously between 1977 and 1989. Born in a poor Isai Vellalar (a backward caste) family, he was named Dakshinamurthy by his godfearing parents Muthuvel and Anjugam. He later changed that to Karunanidhi, a Tamil name shorn of any Brahminical or Sanskrit tinge. He also took part in the antiHindi agitations of 1937-40 and published a handwritten newspaper Manavar Nesan (Friend of Students) and later formed the first student wing of the Dravidian movement, Tamil Nadu Manavar Mandram. He contested his first Assembly election in 1957 from Kulithalai successfully and since then had not lost any of the 13 elections he contested.

India on 9th spot in women’s hockey rankings IANS, NEW DELHI

F

ollowing their quarter-final finish at the Women’s Hockey World Cup, India have jumped a place to be ninth in the world rankings announced by International Hockey Federation (FIH). Sjoerd Marijne-coached India have 1138 points as they made it to the last eight round at the World Cup in London last week. India will be the top-ranked team at the Asian Games, to be held in Indonesia from August 18. “The new ranking comes as an added motivation to our team for the upcoming Asian Games, but what is even better to see is that the players are not satisfied. There is more hunger in the squad to improve the ranking further by per-

forming consistently at the highest level,” Dutch tactician Marijne stated in a Hockey India (HI) release. “We do have plenty of positives from the World Cup as the girls pro-

duced very good hockey, showing their grit and character to get through to the last eight.” World Cup runners-up Ireland made the biggest of gains as they

moved from 16th up to eighth position. Their previous highest ranking was 14th. World Cup winners the Netherlands remained the world’s number one team as they clinched their record-extending eight title with a 6-0 triumph over the Irish girls. The Netherlands have been the topranked side since October 2011. England remain in second spot following their sixth place finish in London while Australia jumped up to third, leapfrogging reigning Pan American champions Argentina, who move to fourth and Commonwealth Games champions New Zealand who dropped to sixth. Germany meanwhile move up to fifth. Spain took the bronze medals in London to achieve their highest ever finish in World Cup history.

Kohli optimistic about India’s chances at Lord’s IANS, LONDON

A

fter going down by a narrow 31-run loss to England in the opening Test at Edgbaston, India skipper Virat Kohli believed that his team is positive going into the second Test at the Lord’s. Kohli starred in the opening Test, scoring 149 and 51 but fell short of partners as the team succumbed to a narrow loss in the opener of the five-Test rubber. But the 29-year-old, who rose to his career-best No.1 ICC Test spot after the sterling performance in

India skipper Virat Kohli

Birmingham is confident of his No.1 ranked Test team bouncing back in the second match. “It’s not like we’re getting rolled over — every Test match that we’re playing is competitive,” Kohli said at the pre-match presser this week. “I feel as a team we’re just about there. We’re in the zone where we’re very positive,” added Kohli, referring to the 95-run win on their last appearance at Lord’s four years ago. India have not won a Test series in England since 2007. Backing his batsmen to come back in the second game, Kohli said: “Being in the right mindset is

a very individual thing.” Asked about his personal achievement of leading from the front when the chips were down in the first innings of the first Test, Kohli said the motivation of leading the country inspires him to perform individually. “Getting to captain the country, I feel, is an honor and I definitely leave no stones unturned when it comes to that,” he said. Kohli also did not rule out the possibility of India fielding two spinners at Lord’s, considering the current hot weather conditions.

n his latest radio telecast via Mann Ki Baat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said that Suraaj (good governance), like Swaraj (self rule), is the “birthright” of every Indian and they should have it.

“After 50 years of Tilak’s birth,

qaatil mein hai (The desire to lay down our lives is burning in our hearts/ Let’s see the strength of our executioner’s arms) inspired the youth like Azad, Ashfaqullah Khan, Bhagat Singh and many others. “Azad’s courage and passion for

Every Indian should have access to good governance and positive results of development. It is the factoring in of this outreach that will create a new India, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the same day, that is, July 23, another son of Mother India was born who sacrificed his life so that his countrymen could breathe freely in an atmosphere of freedom. I am talking about none other than Chandra Shekhar Azad,” Modi said. He said couplets like Sarfaroshi ki tamanna ab hamare dil mein hai/ Dekhna hai zor kitna baazu-e-

freedom inspired the youth of the day. He put his life at stake, but never bowed in front of the foreign rule,” Modi had emphasized. Azad had famously shot himself with the last bullet in his pistol during an encounter with the police on February 27, 1931 at a park in Allahabad, to keep his vow to never surrender to the British regime in India.

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi had made a veiled attack on Congress and some other parties last month, saying “new ruling elites”, born after Independence, controlled politics for generations, but the time was changing and people from rural backgrounds were now occupying high constitutional positions. Addressing the valedictory function of New India Conclave last month, he had also congratulated young Indians for heralding an era of development in the country and had said that it was the youth that propelled to change the ongoing constitutional mechanism. “There was a time when ruling was in the hands of royal family. New ruling elites were born after Independence and they controlled politics for also three generations. The ruling had been in the control of only some families. But the situation has been changed now. “The President, Vice President and me also reached on these posts from rural backgrounds after being elected through a democratic electoral process. And this shows how the country’s people and their thinking have changed,” Modi said, citing leaders like Yogi Adityanath, Biplab Deb, Trivendra Singh Rawat, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Nitish Kumar, Manohar Lal Khattar and Raghubar Das, who were from very common families, but have reached high posts. Modi had said

that the country is passing through an era of transformation. “In last four years, the country has been trying to touch new heights of 21st century. Gone are the days when India was considered to be among the ‘fragile five’. Today, we are the fastest growing economy in the world. Powered by the 125 crore people of India, we will grow even faster. “New India concept belongs to its 125 crore Indians, but Young India is its base. Just like the aspirations and power of the youth, India is doing big, transformative things. Now, India is ready to take off.” Noting “Young India” feels anything is possible and everything is achievable, he said: “This spirit will drive India’s growth.” Modi said this is not India, but a new India “where the power of hope prevails over mindless hate” and “125 crore Indians write their own destiny”. “New India is the place where processes drive progress instead of people influencing processes, where the government belongs to everyone instead of everything belonging to the government. New India is that land where you make your name, your name does not make you, where your ideas matter, not your influence, where opportunities await instead of obstacles, where a billion aspirations find free flowing expression,” he had said. —IANS

India celebrates

72nd Independence day

Chose Aug 15 as it’s a commercial date, says John on ‘Satyameva Jayate’ ‘Satyameva Jayate’ is going to clash with Akshay Kumar’s sports drama ‘Gold’ on the 72nd Independence Day IANS, MUMBAI

A

ctor John Abraham has said the makers of his upcoming film Satyameva Jayate chose August 15 as the film’s release date as it is a very commercial date in terms of doing business. John said this week while interacting with the media to promote Satyameva Jayate along with his coactors Manoj Bajpayee and Aisha Sharma here. Satyameva Jayate is going to clash with Akshay Kumar’s sports drama Gold on Independence Day. Asked why makers of the film chose Independence Day as they could have avoided the clash with big film like Gold, he said: “We chose August 15 as release date of this film because it’s a very commercial date and by releasing your film on that day, you are able to make good money through your film.” “If we had a solo release of this film in the next week of Independence Day then also we would not

be able to do that much business which we will be able to do on Independence Day with Gold so, it makes more sense to release it on a holiday.”

Sherlyn set to release anti-smoking video on I-Day MUMBAI: Actress-model Sherlyn Chopra, who is going to create awareness about side-effects of smoking through her new antismoking video, has said that once a smoker, always a smoker is a myth. Sherlyn Chopra was a chain smoker at one point and she is going to release an antismoking video on the eve of Independence day. Talking about her video, she said, “I will release my video on this issue titled as ‘No Smoking’ before Independence Day. Through the video, I just want to pass on a message that the way we celebrate freedom on Independence

Day, similarly, we should free ourselves from nicotine and celebrate healthier life,” she said. Sherlyn Chopra has joined hands with government of Maharashtra to generate awareness for no-smoking through her video. “I showed my video to Maharashtra government and I am thankful that they really like it. They felt that my video is a sincere and honest effort to educate people to give up smoking.” When asked what message she will give to the audience who are struggling with addiction, she said, “I quit smoking last year and hopefully till my last breath, I will support the no-smoking cause.” —IANS

Adding further, John said that the film will not compete with Akshay Kumar’s Gold but both film will complement each other on Independence Day.

“I think there is enough space for two big films on a holiday. It’s not competing.” “We are complementing each other. We would love if people go

and see Satyameva Jayate and we would be absolutely happy if people go and see Gold.” John Abraham plays vigilante in the film who fights against corruption and social injustice. Asked whether working in such intense action-drama film changes him as a person, he said: “I don’t think it has changed me. I think it’s meant to entertain the audience.” “It’s a very entertaining film. It shows harsh realities like corruption and women molestation so, my character and Manoj Bajpayee’s character address these situations but in different ways.” Satyameva Jayate is written and directed by Milap Milan Zaveri and produced by Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar, Nikkhil Advani (Emmay Entertainment), Monisha Advani & Madhu Bhojwani. The movie Satyameva Jayate features John Abraham, Manoj Bajpayee, Amruta Khanvilkar and Aisha Sharma in lead roles. It is releasing on August 15, 2018.

I

ndians are becoming more tolerant when it comes to accepting new forms of music, says Subir Malik, who is one of the band members of Parikrama. “India is growing (when it comes to accepting indie music). A lot of people now are open to accepting new forms of music. At least musically, we are becoming more tolerant and that is good news,” Malik said in a statement to IANS. The keyboard player along with his bandmates will participate in a multi-city Facebook Live relay session on August 15 as part of Independence Day celebration by Vh1 India. The channel has also planned Vh1 Soundnation — in which they have curated a special play list supported by 72 indie musicians.

Bands like Dualist Inquiry, Grain, Komorebi, The Koniac Net, Laxmi Bomb, The Quarter and Azadi Records Collective will also take part in the live session from cities like Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru. Malik feels the music industry is

not promoting indie artistes as it should. “It is still a niche category if you take India as a whole. Record companies themselves are not in the same positions as they were a decade ago or more and all have limited funds in hand now,” he said.

I-Day: Troopers to attend neighboring state’s parade

Maharashtra Governor cancels I-Day reception

The idea behind advising the troopers to attend the parade is to make the inter-state cooperation among the armed forces stronger IANS, AGARTALA

F

or the first time in India, security personnel of each state in the country will attend the main Independence Day function in the neighboring state to strengthen the cooperation among the armed forces, a top police officer said this week, on August 8. “Following the advice of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, security personnel of each state in the country would participate in the Independence Day parade of the neighboring state,” Inspector General of Police G.S. Rao told IANS. He said: “The Prime Minister has suggested this to make the inter-state cooperation among the armed forces stronger.” His advice came during the annual conference of Director General of Police (DGPs) and Inspector General of Police (IGPs) of states held in Tekanpur in Madhya Pradesh in January. Rao said that in line with that arrangement, a contingent of 45 troopers of Tripura State Rifles (TSR) would attend the main function of the Independence Day of Mizoram and similar number of Mizoram Armed Police would participate in Tripura. “Now the troopers of Tripura

and Mizoram security wings are jointly conducting rehearsal of the parade at the Assam Rifles ground here where the Independence Day function would be held.” Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb for the first time would be

hoisting the tri-color at the event. Assam Director General of Police (DGP) Kuladhar Saikia told IANS over phone from Guwahati that a platoon of Assam police would participate in Meghalaya’s Independence Day parade and

security personnel of Meghalaya will join Assam’s function next week. Saikia said that such joint participation of the security forces among neighboring states’ celebrations was good for improving the security situation.

MUMBAI: Maharashtra Governor C.V. Rao (above) has canceled the traditional Independence Day reception to be held in Raj Bhavan in Pune on the evening of August 15, an official said this week. The decision was taken in the wake of the July 28 tragedy in Raigad district when 30 staffers of the Dr. Balasaheb Sawant Konkan Agriculture University perished, when their bus plunged into a 600-feet deep ravine near Mahad. The varsity staffers were en route to an annual weekend picnic at the Mahabaleshwar hill station, and only one staffer survived the accident, emerging virtually unhurt. The Governor is also the exofficio Chancellor of all the universities in the state. The ‘At Home’ official Independence Day Reception is hosted by the Governor every year. It was planned on the evening of August 15 at the Pune Raj Bhavan but now stands cancelled. However, Rao will attend the flag hoisting ceremony at the Council Hall in Pune that morning as per schedule, said the official. — IANS

ith women safety becoming a serious concern, a city start-up this week announced the first of its kind e-cab service in tri-city of Chandigarh, Panchkula and Mohali. The new all-women service is the first time in the region that will have dedicated women drivers for women commuters. The Future Cabs e-cab service will become operational from August 15. To mark Independence Day, the start-up has offered free rides to women commuters on the launch day. Rajat Luthra, Director Opera-

tions, Future Fiacre Pvt Ltd, said: “Future Cabs are the first company to provide e-cab services in the tricity. The cab service will not only

make travel cheaper but will also be offering better earnings to drivers. Interestingly, through a referral programme, drivers will be able to cre-

ate their own fleet of up to 50 cars.” Stressing on women security, he said: “Our services will not just rely on technology but also provide comfortable travel to women passengers who will be driven only by women, which will further ensure extra security to them. “Women travellers will through their mobile application have an option to summon cabs only with women drivers. However, to ensure earnings of women drivers are not affected, they would be allowed to pick up couples during the day time till 6 in the evening, after which only women passengers will be allowed,” Luthra added. The mobile app will be pro-

grammed in such a manner that women drivers are not able to get requests from male passengers, which would depend on the profiles created by them when they log in to the app. Women drivers will, however, have the convenience to cancel any booking if they are suspicious or find out that a male member has booked the ‘only woman cab’. “Future cabs will also have SOS feature where in panic situation by just click SOS button an emergency message will be flashed to user or driver’s family and to our control room from where we can intimate about the situation to the police,” said Avinasah Sharma, director.

ad Jawaharlal Nehru not been self-centered, India and Pakistan would have been one country, the Dalai Lama said this week, adding that while Nehru was gifted with experience, mistakes do occur. “Mahatma Gandhi wanted to give the prime ministership to (Mohammad Ali) Jinnah. But Nehru refused. He was self-centered. He said, ‘I wanted to be Prime Minister’. India and Pakistan would have been united (had Jinnah been made Prime Minister

at the time). Pandit Nehru is very experienced. But mistakes do happen,” the Dalai Lama said in response to a question from a student during an interaction held at the Goa Institute of Management in North Goa’s Sanquelim village, located nearly 30 km from Panaji. The Dalai Lama gave the Nehru analogy, in response to a question from a student who sought to know from the Tibetan leader, about how one can be sure-footed about one’s decisions and how to avoid committing mistakes in life. evance of India’s Ancient Knowledge” organized as part of the celebrations hosted by the Goa Institute of Management, which is completing 25 years of its existence. Preceding the interaction, the Dalai Lama spoke extensively on India’s ability to merge its rich traditional knowledge with modern facets of education. “India has a culture deeply rooted in tradition and knowledge. The

land of ahimsa is a cauldron of traditional knowledge includes the art of meditation, compassion, secularism and more” the Dalai Lama said. While acknowledging that the British sowed the seeds of the modern style of education as we know it today, he remarked that India is probably the only country which can find the right balance between its traditional knowledge and modern education.

He also emphasized the need to create dialogue and debate on a range of subjects which can aid aspiring B-school students to learn, analyse and gain new experiences. “We need more people to come together and talk and debate on aspects linked to India’s ancient knowledge such as ahimsa and compassion. We also need to find ways to reduce conflict amongst ourselves,” he added.

BSES I-Day advice on flying kites IANS, NEW DELHI

I

n view of the mass kite-flying tradition on Independence Day in the national capital, BSES, one of Delhi’s two electricity distribution companies (discoms), has issued an advisory cautioning people against flying kites near electrical installations as metal-coated kite strings can cause trippings and electrocutions. In an “Independence Day advisory”, BSES said the widespread use of metal coated manjha, or kite string, “poses a great danger not only to the person flying the kite,

but may also disrupt electricity supply. Each year, there are several instances on this count.” “Even though disrupting power supply and causing damage to power equipment is punishable under the Electricity Act and the Delhi Police Act, there seems to be little consideration shown for the law as well as power supply,” the advisory said. Noting that tripping of a single 33/66 KV line can disrupt power supply to over 10,000 consumers, BSES said there are several instances of kite-flying related disruptions every year.

“Elders and parents are requested to inform and counsel children not to enter prohibited/barricaded electrical installations to retrieve kites because life is more precious than a kite of a few rupees. “Any carelessness can lead to a major power failure, blackout and even electrocutions,” the discom emphasized, In case of any emergency, the BSES said, apart from the 24x7 call centre numbers, consumers are can reach BSES through its emergency numbers (BRPL- 1800 10 39707, BYPL- 41999808) or through its mobile app.

‘Purity of emotions intact in B’wood’s patriotic songs’ What has remained common forever in patriotic songs are the soul and pure feeling of love for the nation RADHIKA BHIRANI, MELBOURNE

T

he song Mere desh ki dharti sona ugle in the 1960s to today’s Ghar layenge gold — the vibe of patriotic songs has undergone a change. But there’s a constant. “When it comes to patriotic songs, one thing that has remained common forever is the soul and pure feeling of love for the nation,” Jigar Saraiya of the Sachin-Jigar composer duo told IANS. Their composition Ghar layenge gold enlivens the soundtrack of Akshay Kumar’s upcoming film Gold. “What has changed is the sound and the representation, which depend on the way you want to reach your target audience. The feelings for the motherland remain intact, but we try to make such songs more modern and accessible

to the younger listeners. The purity of emotions does not change,” Jigar added. His music partner Sachin Sanghvi pointed out the lyrical difference in the Hindi songs from the 1960s and 1970s to now. “Earlier, patriotic songs were about the post Independence movement or in glory of the independence fight. Whereas patriotic songs today are about retaining that glory, our culture and values. “Today’s track speak of national pride... So, with time, songs have changed lyrically,” Sachin said. The duo, who had also created Vande mataram for ABCD 2, on August 12 will perform a set of patriotic tracks at the awards night of the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM). It’s their maiden time Down Under, and they are glad it is just days ahead of the Independence

Day. The year has been fairly busy for the composers with projects as diverse as horror comedy Stree, sports drama Gold and romantic drama Arjun Patiala. They had also scored for Parmanu — The Story of Pokhran. “We have realized that our journey is not going to be about repeating a certain formula.” “It is about doing different scripts and proving ourselves as music composers. So, versatility is important as a feature for us,” Sachin said. When their Chaar baj gaye became a chartbuster, they felt they were tagged as the “partymakers” and as those “who make songs on alcohol”. “But right after that song, we did Saibo for Shor In The City. From the starting, our priority was to feel challenged by scripts and genres.”

The group will also get an opportunity to acquaint themselves with Punjab’s glorious culture and heritage through visits to various places. On their maiden visit to the land of their ancestors, the visiting youths said it would be a thrilling experience to interact with their relatives and peers to share experiences and views on traditions, language, dialect and cuisine of Punjab and the UK. A

s India approaches Independence Day on August 15, it is an appropriate time to celebrate the past and Indian democracy. It is also a time to contemplate the future and the democracy that India should become. India has the opportunity, the responsibility, and the capacity to be a global beacon of hope for democracy. There is a critical need for India to become that beacon. Freedom House, the organization that looks at the quality of freedom in countries around the world, titled its 2018 Annual Report, Democracy in Crisis. The opening sentence of that report reads: “Political rights and civil liberties around the world deteriorated to their lowest point in more than a decade in 2017, extending a period characterized by emboldened autocrats, beleaguered democracies, and the United States withdrawal from its leadership role

in the global struggle for human freedom.” There is a vacuum. And, India — which is by-far the world’s largest democracy with a democratic system that is still young and maturing — is positioned to fill that vacuum. India’s democracy is far from perfect, however, The Economist acknowledged many of India’s deficiencies in an article in its June 2 issue, pointing out numerous attempts recently to “game the system” through “horse trading and bald-faced influence peddling”. Combine this with undemocratic actions such as the recent spate of mob lynchings across the country and it becomes obvious that India has much work to do. There are three key areas in which action must be taken for India to be able to shine its light of and for democracy worldwide:ensuring effective civic education for younger students, pursuing an intensified agenda of inclusiveness and economic equality

and opportunity for all and freeing the free press. Of all the most critical, in my opinion, for enhancing Indian democracy is universal and effective civic education for youth. I put this at the top of the list because a 2017 Pew Research Center survey of citizens in 38 nations revealed that only eight percent of

those obligations are learned through effective civic education in the younger years. The youth of today are the citizens of tomorrow. There is something that can be learned from the US about the impact of the presence or absence of that education for youth. Historically, for much of the

India has the opportunity, the responsibility, and the capacity to be a global beacon of hope for democracy. There is a critical need for India to become that beacon the Indian respondents were fully committed to a representative democracy. This response ranked at the very bottom for the nations studied. A strong democracy demands a full-throated commitment to democracy and a complete understanding of one’s obligations as a citizen. That commitment and

20th century, the US placed emphasis on civic education for school students in the earlier school years. This emphasis has declined substantially in the 21st century and the focus has been placed on science-technology-engineering-math (STEM) education and teaching to the test on those subjects. This shift and its negative

impact on support for American democracy — especially among youth — has troubled both citizens and academics alike. That is why nearly 90 percent of poll respondents to a national survey conducted recently by The Democracy Project reacted favorably to a proposal to “ensure that schools make civic education a bigger part of the curriculum”. In the US, in March of this year, the National Council of Social Studies issued a positioning statement recommending that effective civic education “should target the knowledge, skills and dispositions necessary to ensure that young people are truly capable of becoming active and engaged participants in civic life”. An educational initiative in India that has this targeted focus is the Children’s Movement for Civic Awareness (CMCA). Its programmes are designed to “empower children and youth with knowledge, skills and competencies for active citizenship”.

This is what Kartik Aryan insists on

Politics shouldn’t be viewed as career: Kangana Ranaut

A

ctor Kartik Aryan feels that in the world of digitization, everyone is missing out on enjoying the real moments of life hence he insists on putting the phone down and having fun with friends. “With the onslaught of digitization, I feel we are somewhere missing out on enjoying the real moments of life. I believe in living in the now and so should you. So, put your phones down and indulge in a game or two like just the way I am doing and simply have fun with your friends,” the actor said in a statement. The Pyaar Ka Punchnama actor has taken the lead from Lay’s new film ‘College Canteen + No Network = #RealFlavoursOfLife’ this Friendship Day, to encourage youngsters to log off and tune into the real moments of life.

A

ctor Kangana Ranaut, who is vocal about political and social issues, says she has no plans to join politics.”I think politics shouldn’t be taken as a career. If somebody like me wants to join politics, then firstly he or she needs to renunciation all pains and pleasures of the material world, become as ascetic or bairagi,” the actress said. “If you want to serve people then you have to give up your family and other things in your life, then only, I will be able to serve the country and that should be the intention. “At this point, I am very successful in my career so I don’t want to make my career in another field.” The actress is presently busy with Manikarnika: The Queen Of Jhansi.

Manto will show Nawazuddin’s range: Nandita

A

ctress-filmmaker Nandita Das says actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui got into the character of late Urdu writer Saadat Hasan Manto for film Manto effortlessly, and has done justice to it. “I always had Nawaz in mind while writing Manto. He has many traits that are similar to Manto — a deep sensitivity and intensity, anger, and a dry sense of humor. These innate qualities in Nawaz helped him transition into Manto on screen quite effortlessly,” Nandita said in a statement to IANS. “I needed a brilliant actor to portray many contradictory emotions since Manto was a complex character. For instance, he was a person with moral courage, but was also scared of going to jail, confident but vulnerable, deeply sensitive yet very angry. You will know Nawaz’s range when you see Manto,” she added.

‘Everything about me is not for public consumption’

A

ctor Priyanka Chopra, dogged by engagement rumors with American singer Nick Jonas, says her personal life is not for the public to know and she doesn’t owe anyone an explanation. The Quantico star said she doesn’t take gossip and trolls seriously unless it’s something that affects sentiments. “My entire life, especially my personal life... Everything about me is not for public consumption. 90 percent of my life is for public consumption, but 10 per cent of it is for me. Sometimes I laugh, sometimes I get annoyed... But mostly, I tell my publicists ‘Let it be, today’s news is tomorrow’s trash’.” Priyanka said at an event.

Riteish calls Genelia his ‘bestest’ friend

A

ctor Riteish Deshmukh described his wife and actress Genelia Deshmukh as his best friend, lifeline and strength on her 31st birthday last week. “Serendipity: Friendship Day meets birthday. Wishing my bestest friend, my strength, my lifeline, my ‘Baiko’ a very happy birthday. Loads of surprises in store before the day ends. Love you Genelia! And yes, every birthday you don’t need to remind me that you are way younger than me!” Riteish, 39, tweeted. Genelia began her acting career with Tujhe Meri Kasam, also starring Riteish, in 2003. She later established herself in Telugu cinema by acting in several films from 2003 to 2005. — All stories from IANS

Shri Jagannath Temple Celebrates Ratha Yatra BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL- On Saturday July 14th, five hundred people gathered at Shri Jagannath Temple of Greater Chicago to celebrate Ratha Yatra (Chariot festival) of Lord Jagannath. During this event, Lord Jagannath, accompanied by Lord Balabhadra, Devi Subhadra, and Lord Sudarshan, take a nine day sojourn to His aunt’s house (Shri Gundicha Temple) on a beautifully decorated chariot pulled by his devotees. The rituals of Netroutshav and Naba Yauban are performed the day before Ratha Yatra, in which the deities emerge in their youthful forms, dressed in beautiful costumes, after two weeks of seclusion (Anabasar). On the day of the festival all of the rituals were dutifully performed. The deities were carried out by devotees to the chariot. The ritual of Chera Panhara, the cleansing of the chariot and the road the chariot will travel on, was performed by Mr. Pradip Nayak of Naperville. At this point, the chariot was ready to roll, and hundreds of devotees pulled the chariot to the beautiful sounds of various traditional instruments. The procession continued for an hour, as the sweet cakes and snacks offered to the Lord were distributed to devotees. The

celebration came to an end when the deities were carried back to Shri Gundicha temple.. It is said and believed that taking a view of Lord Jagannath on the chariot relieves one from the cycle of rebirth. The return journey of the Lord, known as Bahuda Yatra, took place on Sunday July 22nd, in which the deities returned back to Shri Jagannath Temple in a similar procession

in which the deities were decorated in stunning golden costumes. According to one of founding member, Mr. Neel Nanda, this festival has been celebrated since 2006 by Sri Jagannath Society of Greater Chicago, a religious and philanthropic non-profit organization, which has established Shri Jagannath Temple in Aurora, IL.

Detained Pakistani student released

Mohammed Sarfaraz Al-Hussain

BY A STAFF WRITER OUSTON, TX – A Pakistani immigrant who was detained for a month after returning from a trip to Mexico with her sister on July 3 has been released. Mohammed Sarfaraz Al-Hussain known as Faraz Hussein, 23 and his sister Shahla Shahnawaz, 27, were held at the border but the latter was let off but Hussein was stopped, questioned and detained at a detention centre. He was told by his attorney that exiting and re-entering the US would re-trigger and extend his student visa which was to expire soon. However, a Customs and Border Protection (CBP) spokesperson said that Hussein admitted that he was working in the US without any authorization and that he was not currently enrolled in any school. “It is important to note that simply having a visa does not guarantee entry to the US. A CBP officer at the port of entry will conduct an inspection to determine if the individual is eligible for admission under US immigration laws,” a CBP spokesperson said in a statement. FIEL Houston and other civil rights groups helped Hussein’s family in having Hussein freed from custody of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement authorities.
