Within her own Democratic Party, Hillary Clinton is miles ahead of her likely rivals but she will face a ‘battle-tested’ Republican opponent ready to take on the Democrats

Hillary vs the rest

IANS, WASHINGTON

T

he U.S. presidential race took off with Hillary Clinton finally jumping into the fray with an aura of inevitability, but that analysts suggested may turn out to be the former secretary of state’s biggest handicap. In her second bid to break the glass ceiling and return to the White House, the former first lady chose a low key video message on social media to announce her run on April 12 before heading to Iowa, the state which traditionally kicks off the primaries. The first official event of her 2016 presidential campaign was a roundtable discussion with four students and three educators in an automotive technology classroom at a community college. There she declared her desire to “begin a conversation” with Americans on how she could “be the champion who goes to bat for Americans.” Low key or not, Clinton’s entry has electrified the somewhat somnolent presidential race and generated media attention far and wide, including India, with which she has a long history going back to her first visit as first lady in 1995, unlike any other candidate. As Alyssa Ayres, a fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations wrote in a recent blog post “First and foremost, she sees India as a crucial part of US strategy in a world increasingly centered on Asia, where, in her words, ‘the future of politics will be decided.’” “As secretary of state her focus on rebalancing U.S. foreign policy toward Asia contained a strong emphasis on expanding ties with India, “ she noted. Within her own Democratic Party, Clinton is miles ahead of her likely rivals - none of whom have officially declared their intention to run. According to Time magazine former Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley is polling at 1 percent and liberal Senator Bernie Sanders is at 4 percent compared with Clinton’s 66 percent. “Though both are still long shots, they could force her to compete for support from the liberal base, potentially hurting her chances in the general election,” it said. Among the Republicans, she leads former Florida governor Jeb Bush 54 percent to 40 percent in

Who are already ‘in’ the race for 2016?

Obama not ready to endorse Hillary yet

Except Hillary Clinton, none from the Democratic party have officially joined the race for 2016 presidential race. But the Republican field is getting more congested with each passing day. Three of them are already in:

WASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama is not ready to formally endorse his ex-secretary of state, Hillary Clinton, in her bid for the presidency because it is possible that other hopefuls for the post will appear, including other “friends” of the chief executive. A day after Clinton, who was defeated by Obama in the Democratic primaries of 2008, announced her intention to seek the party’s presidential nomination in 2016, White House spokesperson Josh Earnest on April 13 scuttled rumors about any immediate support she might get from the president, Efe News Service reported. “The two of them Obama and Clinton have become friends, but there are other people who are

Senator Ted Cruz announced his candidacy in March. Best known for his role in the government shutdown of 2013, Cruz is one of the rising young stars and one of the most controversial figures of the Republican Party. He is also known for his scepticism towards the moderate sections of the party and for his outright criticism of the policies of President Barack Obama. Senator Rand Paul declared his candidacy for president on April 12. Son of former Texas congressman and 2012 presidential candidate Ron Paul, the Kentucky senator is known for his libertarian views and support for reduction in foreign aid. Analysts believe that Paul’s left-libertarian leanings may make him the candidate of choice for disaffected free marketers. Senator Marco Rubio from the state of Florida announced his candidacy on April 13. While Rubio was one of eight senators who shepherded a bipartisan immigration reform bill through the Senate, he later voted against funding the Obama administration’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals initiative, aimed at giving relief to undocumented migrants brought to the U.S. as children.

a matchup and with even larger margins over Texas Senator Ted Cruz, Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker and Florida Senator Marco Rubio, Time said. Louisiana’s Indian-American governor Bobby Jindal is still toying with the idea of a presidential run. But potential Republican candidates lost no time attacking Clinton leaving criticism of likely primary rivals within the party for another day. Rubio, 43, the youngest contender in the race so far, took a swipe at Clinton on April 13. “Just yesterday, a leader from yesterday,” he said as cited by CNN, as the crowd erupted in boos, “began a campaign for President by promising to take us back to yesterday. But yesterday is over, and we are never going back.” Kentucky Senator Rand Paul released a video ad critical of Clinton hours before she officially declared her candidacy on April 12 saying she “represents the worst of the Washington machine, the arrogance of power,

corruption and cover-up”. Cruz, another official 2016 GOP candidate, questioned her success as secretary of state saying “Hillary Clinton represents the failed policies of the past”. Bush turned the Clinton debut into a fundraising opportunity

telling his supporters in an email that “Hillary plans to raise $1.7 billion to win the White House ... which is why I’m asking you to give $5 right now” to “stop her”. With hardly any opposition worth the name, Clinton may easily win the Democratic prima-

friends of the president who may decide to enter the race. So the president has not offered up any sort of endorsement at this point,” Earnest told a press conference. However, the spokesperson did not identify exactly who those “friends” might be.

ry, but “she’ll face a battle-tested Republican opponent who will be in tip-top shape to take on the Democrats,” Time suggested. However, her “supporters argue that even without a major primary fight, she’ll be ready too”, it said.

Vaisakhi resolution in US Congress WASHINGTON: Sixteen U.S. lawmakers led by Democrat John Garamendi have introduced a resolution in the U.S. John Garamendi House of Representatives, honoring the Sikh community’s celebration of Vaisakhi. The bipartisan resolution was cosponsored among others by the lone Indian-American Congressman Ami Bera, Democratic co-chair of the Congressional Caucus on India and Indian Americans, one of the largest in Congress with more than 180 members. “America’s founding ideals of freedom of worship, equality, and justice are reflected in the Sikh American community’s celebration of

Vaisakhi,” said Garamendi, co-chair of the American Sikh Congressional Caucus. “I am proud to represent one of the largest Sikh communities in the country. I have partnered with the community on many issues, including civil liberties, education, and business development,” he said. “Sikhs are an integral part of the American fabric, and we invite our fellow Americans to learn more about their Sikh neighbors by visiting their local gurdwaras and partnering with us on community service projects,” said Rajdeep Singh, senior director of law and policy at the Sikh Coalition. The resolution notes that Sikhism was introduced to the U.S. in the 19th century.

Modi proposes increased cooperation in defense manufacturing, pitches for permanent UNSC seats for both nations IANS, BERLIN

P

rime Minister Narendra Modi on April 14 wooed German business, assuring an open and stable environment in India to give a fillip to his ‘Make in India’ initiative, and said there could be a strong partnership between India’s Lion and Germany’s Eagle. Modi also pushed for UNSC permanent membership for both countries, saying they have “earned the right”. Addressing the media after talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, he said “I believe that there will be a strong partnership between the King of the Earth, Lion and the King of the Skies, the Eagle”. Referring to his last visit to Berlin, when Air India One had stopped at

Berlin enroute to Brazil for the BRICS summit in July, Modi said: “When I last came to Berlin, Germany was successful in winning the World Cup Final. This time in Berlin, I feel that we will also be successful in taking the strategic partnership between India and Germany to new heights.” Modi’s stopover at Berlin clashed with the FIFA World Cup final. Merkel chose to watch the final, which Germany won after many years, over a meeting with Modi. “My objective of coming to Germany was not only to invite the German industry to India, but to assure them that they would find an open and stable environment, which would be easy to do business in; and that they will have my full support to invest and work in India,” he said.

European Parliament, Belgium to host yoga events BRUSSELS: Sri Sri Ravi Shankar will lead a special yoga event in the European Parliament (EP) in Brussels on April 21 following efforts in this regard by Indian Ambassador to the EU and Belgium, Manjeev Singh Puri. and mutually beneficial agreement at the earliest”. He also proposed that both sides should increase cooperation in advanced technology and defense

manufacturing. On terrorism, Modi said: “We need a comprehensive global strategy to deal with this global challenge, in which India and Germany can work together.” He also proposed that both cooperate in the areas of maritime, cyber and space security. “Earlier when we used to talk about terrorism, people used to say it is a law and order problem. Now they have realized how big a threat it is,” he said. In an apparent reference to Pakistan, Modi said: “Pressure should be created on governments who give shelter to terrorists. If we can make this effort and isolate terrorists and people supporting terrorists...” He also pitched for the United Nations to pass a resolution defining terrorism. “There is a proposal pending for a long time where there is a need to define terror. I would request the United Nations to pass the resolution and define terror,”he said.

Modi in France India charters ‘expensive’ Rafale flight IANS, PARIS

I

n a major fillip for India-France ties, India said on Friday that it will buy 36 Rafale fighter jets in fly-away condition as both sides also pushed for early conclusion of techno-commercial talks on the Jaitapur nuclear power plant and inked 17 agreements as Prime Minister Narendra Modi held talks with French President Francois Hollande here. The Rafale deal was the biggest takeaway in the talks between Modi and Hollande. India had shortlisted Rafale, made by Dassault Aviation, in a $20-billion deal for purchase of 126 fighter jets for the MMRCA project in 2012. However, the final deal has not been inked.

Modi raises a toast with French President Francois Hollande in Paris.

Hollande said their ties in civil nuclear energy, sustainable energy and defense and the desire to acquire 36 Rafale jets show the

partnership has moved to new stage of cooperation, Hollande also voiced indignation at the release on bail of 26/11 mas-

termind Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi. Modi said that both countries have completed 50 years in space cooperation and added that “I am glad we have released a joint postal stamp today”. “President Hollande has extended full cooperation in our ‘Make In India’ campaign in the defense sector which is not just a programme but an ambition,” he said in Hindi. Hollande also voiced support to India for a permanent membership of the UN Security Council. Both sides also urged for early conclusion of techno-commercial discussions on the proposal for construction of six 1650 Mwe nuclear power plants at Jaitapur, with due consideration to project viability and in the framework of an ambitious partnership for large

and critical components, the joint statement said. The two also urged their atomic energy establishments to lay an ambitious foundation for the future of India-France civil nuclear cooperation. Both sides signed 17 agreements, including in the field of civil nuclear energy, railways and space, and three Letters of Intent. The joint statement said that India and France reaffirmed their commitment to their deep strategic partnership and deepened bilateral ties. It said France and India shared common concerns and objectives in the field of nonproliferation of weapons of mass destruction. Earlier, Modi was accorded a ceremonial welcome in morning.

Modi said Canada has the potential to be a partner in India’s economic transformation and assured a “new environment in India, which is open, predictable, stable and easy to do business in”. The highlight of the agreements was the $350-million uranium deal that was signed by Cameco and the Atomic Energy Commission of India in the presence of Modi and Harper. It marked a new chapter in India’s ties with Canada, which had imposed sanctions on India after its nuclear tests. Under the deal which runs through 2020, Cameco will supply

7.1 million pounds of uranium concentrate to India. Welcoming the deal which has been reached after protracted talks, Modi said at a joint press conference with Harper: “The agreement on procurement of uranium from Canada for our civilian nuclear power plants launches a new era of bilateral nuclear cooperation. It also reflects a new level of mutual

trust and confidence.” Announcing visa on arrival for Canadians, Modi said his government wants to promote people-to-people contacts between the two countries. Canadians can apply online and will be eligible for visas for 10 years. Modi said India and Canada have complementary interests. “India offers immense opportunities for Canada. Canada has the potential to

be India’s key partner in many sectors, including energy, manufacturing, skills development, research, education, and his smart city project,” Modi said. Apart from this, a number of agreements were signed following talks between the two leaders. These are in the areas of civil aviation and space, skill development and higher education.

In his remarks, Harper said: “Your visit indicates the strong friendship between Canada and India. This is a growing relationship. Trade potential between our countries is enormous.” Lauding Modi for undertaking economic reforms and his “minimum government, maximum governance” mantra, Harper said: “The historic visit by Prime Minister Modi to Canada combined with the number and scope of agreements signed between our governments clearly demonstrate the commitment of both countries to taking bilateral relations to new heights.” Modi said both leaders were “absolutely committed to establish a new framework for economic partnership” and that both have “made rapid progress on long pending agreements”. Modi said both sides have agreed to deepen cooperation to combat terrorism and extremism. “We will also promote a comprehensive global strategy, and consistent policy and action against all sources of terrorism and its support.” “I believe that Canada is a major Asia Pacific power and should play a more active role, including in regional institutions, in promoting a stable and prosperous future for the region,” he said.

ust as the organizers had advertised, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s public interaction with the Indian diaspora at Ricoh Coliseum here on April 15 had all the trappings of a rockstar concert as Bollywood singer Sukhwinder Singh, choreographer, Shiamak Davar troupe and other groups set the tone for the evening. The nearly 10,000-strong audience interrupted Modi repeatedly during his hour-long speech with shouts of “Modi, Modi...” as the prime minister spoke about the changes sweeping India. Speaking in Hindi in the presence of Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and his cabinet colleagues, Modi repeatedly stressed, “Sarkar nahi badli, jan manas badla hai dus mahine main (It is not the government that has changed, but it’s people’s thinking that has changed during the last

10 months)”. In the new atmosphere, Modi said, people were responding with enthusiasm to new ideas whether it was his Clean India Mission, or bank accounts for the poor or gas subsidy. Modi said celebrities joined the Clean India Mission on their own, poor people deposited `140 billion in their newly opened

accounts and rich people are giving up their gas subsidy so that the poor can be helped. “Modi has done nothing...it is the common man in India who has changed,” the prime minister said. There were rounds of cheers every time he took a dig at the previous regime. But the prime minister drew

the biggest applause when he said his mission is “Skill India while theirs was Scam India”. People cheered him when the PM, while referring to his mission to clean India and root out corruption, said in Hindi, “Jinhone gandgi karni thee, woh kar ke chale gaye. Lekin hum safai kar ke jayenge (Those who created scams

and dirt have now gone, we will clean up the mess)”. Modi said his government was working on his four-pronged dream symbolizing the four colors in the Indian flag — saffron, white, green and blue (the color of the Ashok Chakra in the flag). “Saffron means energy (revolution, white means the second white (milk) revolution, green means the second green revolution and blue means clear blue sky through new manufacturing process which don’t impact the environment,” Modi said. The prime minister wondered why the likes of Google and Microsoft cannot be created in India when Indian IT specialists are playing an important role in these tech giants. “We have undertaken to promote innovation in India through the Atal Innovation Mission and skill development through our Skill India mission,” he said.

The ongoing fighting against the extremist group dominated Obama’s talks on April 14 with Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi at the White House, who is on his first visit to the US. Obama “pledged to continue to support Iraqi security forces and tribal engagement initiatives with US training and equipment,” the two countries said in a joint statement released at the conclusion of talks. DHAKA: Bangladesh has incurred financial losses worth $2.2 billion in the first quarter of this year as a result of the ongoing political unrest in the country, a World Bank report said. “Economic growth would have been between 6.4 and 6.6 percent in the ongoing 2014-15 fiscal, if there were no political turmoil. Our estimates are it would be at 5.6 percent,” World Bank Dhaka office’s Chief Economist Zahid Hussain told reporters here after releasing the “Bangladesh Development Update Report 2015”.

Senate Foreign Relations Committee on April 14 voted 19-0 to pass an amended version of the bill, which will advance to the full Senate for a vote. The new bill, while blocking President Barack Obama from lifting the sanctions on Iran during the review period, reduces the period to 52 days from the original 60 days, and allows the president to submit the accord after the June deadline for concluding the negotiations. RSS not terror group: US Attorney NEW YORK: The US State Department has asked a court here to dismiss a lawsuit filed by a Sikh rights group for declaring India’s RSS as a “terror group” saying it has no standing. In an 18-page motion filed on April 14 before judge Laura Taylor Swain of the Southern District of New York, US attorney Preet Bharara said Sikhs For Justice (SFJ) lacks standing to bring such claims. Even if SFJ had standing, the political question doctrine bars judicial review where the Secretary of State has not designated an organization, it said. “Neither SFJ nor this Court possesses authority to compel the Secretary to designate an entity as a foreign terrorist organization-a discretionary action that implicates important foreign affairs and national security considerations, and which is entrusted to the political branches,” the motion added.

SFJ has filed a lawsuit in the US court to label the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh as a foreign terrorist organization. It accuses RSS of “believing in and practicing a fascist ideology and for running a passionate, vicious and violent campaign to turn India into a ‘Hindu’ nation”. “Political question doctrine cannot trump the fundamental human rights of protection of life and liberty which are embedded in the American constitution,” SFJ attorney Gurpatwant S Pannun said.

obel laureate Gunter Wilhelm Grass, best known for his 1959 novel The Tin Drum, has died in a hospital in Lubeck at the age of 87. As an author, poet, playwright, illustrator, graphic artist and sculptor, Grass was a true giant with success in every artistic form he explored. His association with India began in the 1980s when he joined the long list of activists linked to the country’s peace movement and stayed predominantly in Calcutta (now Kolkata) with wife Ute from August 1986 to January 1987.

His extended sojourn in India resulted into the publishing of Zunge Zeigen, an allusion to Kali’s tongue, in 1988. It is a prose of approximately 90 pages, 80 drawings and a long epic poem of approximately 23 pages and is considered to recognize Kolkata’s role as a mirror of the glob-

al conflicts between the developing and the developed world. “This is very sad. A true giant, inspiration, and friend. Drum for him, little Oskar,” wrote India-born author Salman Rushdie on Grass’ death. “Gunter Grass moved, enthralled, and made the people of our country think with his literature and his art,” German President Joachim Gauck said of the writer, offering his condolences. Grass was among Germany’s most significant post-War writers. Many of his works were based on the Nazi era, describing the horrors of the era and the destruction and guilt felt after Germany’s defeat.

Official Secrets Act under lens Amid calls for declassification of documents on Subhas Chandra Bose, the Union government forms panel comprising RAW, IB and PMO officials to review the OSA

IANS, NEW DELHI

Congress dares Modi to declassify documents on Netaji

T

he Union government has formed an inter-ministerial committee headed by the cabinet secretary to review the Official Secrets Act in context of demands to declassify files related to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s death or disappearance. RAW, IB, Union home ministry and PMO officials will be part of the panel. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had met Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s grandnephew, Surya Bose, in Berlin and promised to examine the request for declassification of all files related to events since his death or disappearance in Taiwan on August 18, 1945. Surya is the grandson of Netaji’s elder brother Sarat Chandra Bose, and son of Amiya Nath Bose, who too was among those under watch. Bose’s descendants had exuded confidence of a positive outcome

after getting an assurance from Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the issue. “The prime minister gave Surya a patient hearing for more than 40 minutes. Besides looking into the snooping controversy, he has also assured that he will take

positive steps towards declassification of the secret files on Netaji,” said Surya Bose’s brother and family spokesperson Chandra Kumar Bose in Kolkata. “We are hopeful of positive action by Modi,” said Chandra Kumar.

he Congress has termed the news reports suggesting snooping of family of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose “motivated news plants based on selected and mischievous leaks” and dared Prime Minister Narendra Modi to declassify all documents relating to the freedom fighter. In a statement, party leader Anand Sharma accused the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government of running “a sinister campaign” aimed at maligning national icons. “News reports suggesting snooping of family of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose are motivated news plants based on selective and mischievous leaks. BJP and government are running a sinister campaign of innuendoes, insinuations and selective leaks

aimed at maligning national icons and our founding fathers including Jawaharlal Nehru, Vallabbhai Patel, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Govind Ballabh Pant and others,” Sharma said. Referring to the news report which said that Nehru had sought information about Netaji’s nephew Amiya Nath Bose’s visit to Japan, Sharma said that “the news plant contradicts the earlier media story of IB surveillance”. “One is forced to wonder as to how and why an enquiry by a prime minister - in most transparent manner and vide written note sent through the proper channel of foreign secretary and ambassador - about a close associate of a family can be construed as snooping or espionage,” he said.

People in West Bengal greet each other on the occasion of Subho Nababarsha (Bengali New Year). (R) Kerala Hindus celebrate Vishu, ushering in their New Year, in the traditional style.

It’s spring all over

Many parts of the country are in festive mood as from Assam to Kerala, West Bengal and Punjab, people welcome New Year with traditional fervor and gaiety IANS, NEW DELHI/KOLKATA

Rongali Bihu, the Spring Fest in Assam

I

ts is spring time and the entire country wears a festive mood. People in West Bengal greet each other on the occasion of Naba Barsha. Baisakhi is celebrated in Punjab. It’s Vishu time in Kerala, Rongali Bihu is Assam. Puthandu Pirappu, Maha Vishuba Sankranti are also being celebrated in many parts of the country. These festivals marking the New Year strengthen the pluralistic heritage of our nation and bring with them hope and optimism for the future. These festivals inspire us to work for the peace, progress and prosperity. If it’s Poila Boisakh, it’s time for innovation of sweets that’s almost become a ritual. Most of the big sweet-makers in Kolkata have come up with new offerings that range from the experimental to exotic. Kolkata — the city which is home to many famous culinary joints satisfying the sweet cravings for years together — is now witnessing a sea change in the art of making of sweets as also in flavours and taste. “Times have changed and so have the taste of people. They now prefer flavoured sweets than traditional ones,” Pratap Nag, the sixthgeneration owner of the 189-yearold sweet shop, told IANS. The sweet shop that invented popular sweets like ladikeni — named after then British governor Lord Canning’s wife Lady Canning — and ashubhog sondesh named after eminent educationist Sir Ashutosh Mukhopadhyay, is now busy preparing NextGen-flavoured sweets. “Abar khabo, dilkhush and paradise are new sweet offerings

Rongali Bihu is the most popular spring festival in Assam which also marks the beginning of Assamese New Year.

that have become extremely popular among our customers,” Nag added. Stuffed with mawa and pista, abar khabo is delicate and has a strong essence of gulab jal (rose water). Dilkhush has a kesar-zaffran taste and the tri-colored, vanilla-flavored paradise is so soft

that it melts the moment it enters the mouth. Then, there is the alphonso sondesh with the rich taste of mango, leaving one wondering whether it is the real thing or a sweet item and all-time favorites — chocolate and butterscotch sondesh.

Kerala Hindus celebrate Vishu, usher in New Year THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala Hindus celebrated Vishu, ushering in their New Year, in the traditional style with the devouts among them making early morning visits to temples on April 15. Women dressed in Kerala saree and men in conventional dhoti were seen visiting temples. The maximum rush was witnessed at the famed temples like Sabarimala, Sree Krishna temple Guruvayoor, and also Sree Padman-

abha Swamy temple in the capital city. Vishu is believed to mark the arrival of good luck for the coming year and is a public holiday in the state. In Hindu families, preparations for Vishukani starts the night before the New Year with ‘urali’ (a special vessel) being cleaned and fresh farm produces being collected and arranged. The items that are placed before the deity include rice, food grain, cucumber, pumpkin, etc.

Another famous shop, Girish Chandra Dey and Nakur Chandra Nandy, located in the Hedua area, also in north Kolkata, has joined the fray for redefining the sondesh preparation. “There is definitely a competition in the market to come up with an innovative and different variety of sweets and match the people’s expectations. We also need to maintain the quality,” Pratip Nandy, the fourth generation owner of the 1844-built shop, told IANS. Although jol-bhora sondesh, made of dry fruits and a trademark of the outlet is still popular, it has come up with flavored sondesh like butterscotch, black current, pineapple to meet changing tastes. So, move over from rosogollas and don’t miss out the opportunity to gobble in your favorite sondesh this Bengali New Year!

GUWAHATI: Rongali Bihu, the most colorful festival of Assam started on April 14 with a large number of people taking part in Bihu dance and songs. They also organized various funfare activities to mark the occasion across the state. Rongali Bihu starts on the last day of the month of ‘Chot’ (the month of Chaitra), which is on April 14. The first day of Rongali Bihu is dedicated to the cattle and is celebrated as ‘Goru Bihu’. People, particularly the farming community, take their cattle to rivers, ponds and other water bodies and give them a ceremonial bath rubbing them with turmeric paste and other herbs. The cattle are also tied with new poghas (ropes). The actual celebration of the Rongali Bihu starts from the second day, which is the first day of the month of Bohag, starting the Assamese New Year. On the second day, people wear new clothes and seek blessings from their elders and heads of the family so that the year brings them prosperity, good health and good luck. Assam’s most prominent All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) on April 14 organized the annual Mukoli Bihu (open Bihu) at the historic Judges Field in Guwahati with different colourful programmes, including the traditional Bihu dance and traditional dances and songs of different communities in Assam and other parts of the northeast.

SANIA SHINES ON TOP

Ace tennis player Sania Mirza is first Indian to be World No.1 in women’s doubles VETURI SRIVATSA, NEW DELHI

Double delight

J

ust three days after Saina Nehwal was deposed as World No.1 badminton player in only a week, her Hyderabad citymate Sania Mirza ascended to the throne on April 12 as the tennis world’s top doubles player. The country rightly savored and celebrated Saina’s rise to the top of the summit but before the weekend, she had to make way for Chinese Li Xurei to return to the top. Sania offset the disappointment and her accomplishment is also not easy coming. Sania, 28, created history in the company of Martina Hingis, winning her third straight Women Tennis Association (WTA) doubles title with the Swiss star, the duo beating Ausralian Casey Dellacqua and Darja Jurak of Croatia at the Family Circle Club tennis tournament. It has been a happy week for not only for Sania, but also Martina, the two climbing to the No.1 position as a team. Remarkably, the two have not lost ever since they joined forces three weeks ago. They won the two hardcourt titles in Indian Wells and Miami before triumphing on green clay at Charleston, South Carolina. Both promise much more in the weeks to come. It was a tough week for Sania and Martina, going through the agony of special tie-breakers in every round on the way to the

final. As Saina mentioned it’s a tribute to their ability to bounce back even when they were not at their best. The fact that they lost only three sets over 14 matches in the three tournaments is an indication of their dominance. “It’s a dream for every kid to be No.1 one day,” said Sania just as Saina recalled how her mother wanted her to get an Olympic medal. Yes, she can’t think of a better person than Martina to get to the top, acknowledging the experience

Smith’s royal treat for Rajasthan

Steve Smith scored 79 off 53 balls

AHMEDABAD: Rajasthan Royals (RR) skipper Steve Smith smashed an unbeaten 79 off 53 balls to steer his side to a thrilling seven wicket victory over Mumbai Indians (MI) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) encounter at the Sardar Patel Stadium here on April 14. The winning runs came from the captain’s willow, as Rajasthan hunted down MI’s total of 164 for five. With five balls still remaining, Rajasthan reached 165 for three. With this win, the Royals have registered their third straight win of the season. In stark contrast, 2013

IPL champions Mumbai slumped to their third defeat in as many matches. Chasing a challenging 164-run target set by Mumbai Indians, the hosts got off to a modest start, but lost opener Sanju Samson for 17 in the fifth over when Mumbai’s Rohit Sharma caught him at mid off off the bowling of Vinay Kumar. But Rajasthan didn’t let the asking rate go up, as Steve Smith and opener Ajinkya Rahane (46; 39 b, 4 x4) piled up a vital 64-run partnership for the second wicket to set the tone for the run chase. As the duo was looking to take the game away from the visitors, Shreyas Gopal struck for Mumbai as dismissed Ajinkya Rahane, when he was caught at long off by Corey Anderson. Earlier on in the innings, Mumbai skipper Rohit Sharma opted to bat first but the visitors got an early jolt, when opener Aaron Finch cramped himself up while taking a run and was forced to leave the field in the fourth over.

of the Swiss miss helping them wriggle out of tight situations. Martina said it in a perfect postscript: “I think now the pressure is off. I know we can play at any time, any surface, anywhere.” Sania’s rise was so quick and amazing that even she can’t believe she is No.1, not long ago she was trailing Italians Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci at the top of the ranking table by some two and half thousand points. Sania is the third Indian to

attain the No.1 ranking in doubles following her more illustrious compatriots Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhuapthi. Sania’s progress report is as impressive, her three Grand Slam mixed doubles titles underscoring her achievements. To put her fantastic run in perspective, it has to be viewed taking her performance graph last year. She ended the year winning the year-end WTA finals with the experienced Zimbabwean Cara Black.

Najam Sethi may be interim ICC president IANS, DUBAI

N

ajam Sethi, the head of the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) executive committee, is likely to become the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) interim president, filling the post left vacant by Mustafa Kamal’s resignation earlier this month. Sethi, who is currently in Dubai ahead of the ICC meeting, is a favorite to replace Kamal. Sethi, who is also the former chairman of the PCB, was slated to take over from Kamal as the ICC president for a period of 12 months from July 1. However, he had expressed his willingness to take on the role for an interim period before formally taking charge in July. Bangladeshi Kamal’s resignation from a largely ceremonial position came after a public falling out with the ICC. It stemmed from the IndiaBangladesh quarter-final at the World Cup, when he had strongly

criticized the umpires — even questioning their motives over a dubious no-ball call that went against his country. Kamal had also protested after he was passed over for the duty of handing over the trophy to the World Cup winners, a decision he said went against his right as ICC president. ICC chairman and former Indian cricket board BCCI boss N. Srinivasan handed over the trophy

to winning Australian captain Michael Clarke after the World Cup final on March 29 in Melbourne. Australia beat New Zealand in the final. According to the ICC’s rules, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) had the option of nominating a replacement for Kamal, who is a former president of the Bangladesh board. On April 5, BCB president Nazmul Hassan had said the board was still undecided over a replacement. “We discussed the matter in our meeting. I haven’t seen anyone showing interest,” Nazmul Hassan had earlier said. “The person whom we nominate ultimately has to give a 10minute speech in one meeting. We haven’t selected anyone but we still have a bit of time to make our mind,” Hassan said. “We will also look into the ICC’s constitution to find out what could be done. We will let you know soon what we decide, whether to send anyone’s name as nomination or not.”

Why your wine tastes so different LONDON: Even the high-quality wine like Pinot Noir can have different taste and colors depending on where it was produced, says a study. Winemakers the world over that produce Pinot Noir start with the same thing — grapes — and end up with very different products. “We wanted to find out what causes those differences,” said Heli Siren and her colleagues from University of Helsinki, Finland. In the study, the team analyzed the chemical profiles of eight Pinot Noir wines from different regions — the U.S, France, New Zealand and Chile. They found that each wine had a different profile, affected by the processes used to make it. Winemakers add sucrose and other chemicals during manufacturing. By looking at the acids — the organic compounds — in the wine, the researchers could determine which sugars had been added during processing. They could also find out whether sulphur dioxide was added to prevent the wine from oxidizing. The processes used were different for each wine and included natural fermentation, biodynamic fermentation (using organically-grown grapes), micro-oxygenation and cold fermentation. The results showed that the wines with the lowest organic compound levels were made using the newer processes: biodynamic and microoxygenation fermentation.

ashion trade event India Runway Week season four summer edition celebrated fresh fashion by young talent here. Held over the weekend, the fashion event, organized by the Indian Federation For Fashion Development (IFFD), saw participation by 35 designers including Jenjum Gadi and Masumi Mewawala. It gave an opportunity to young designers to share a platform with some of the estab-

lished names from the fashion fraternity. “The IFFD team is young and we know it’s difficult for young entrepreneurs to survive. Everyone talks about youth but no one is doing anything substantial for them. Young Fashion Movement is one small step to give more opportunities to young talent in the field of fashion,” Avinash Pathania, founder, IFFD, said in a statement. The three-day event saw Bollywood showstoppers like Amyra Dastur, Ajaz Khan and Taapsee Pannu.

Shop smart for a better sex life IANS, NEW YORK

G

ood shopping deals at your favorite store not only relieve you of stress or mood swings but can also arouse the euphoric joy of an orgasm! According to researchers from the University of Michigan, finding good deals is similar to the feeling of great sex. The team found that the same part of the brain that is triggered by finding good deals also happens to be the spot where the need for other catalysts of pleasure (like sex) is detected. Using facial tracking technology, a 30-year-old woman was sent out to find

deals at her favorite stores. They planted a tracker that monitored her brain and then reported the woman’s pleasure levels during her shopping trip. It reached a high point after she found a pair of pants she had always wanted to buy.

The same part of the brain that is triggered by finding good deals is also the spot where the urge for sex is detected, says a new study.

“We decided to ask the brain rather than the person. So we had people shop while having their brain scanned with functional MRI. We found again some subtle emotions underlying these shopping decisions,” said Scott Rick, who led the study. “These stores are set up to set off your brain. There are lights, the music. They smell good, so it is really immersing yourself in the feel-good experience,” marketing analyst Michelle Madhok was quoted as saying by ABC’s Nightline. However, overpaying gave a completely opposite experience to bargain shoppers, the authors said.

aking a film mocking the sacred cows isn’t easy in this country where every artiste stumbles on a sensitive organisation, green saffron or yellow, every step along his way. And before that Umesh Shukla’s Oh My God (OMG). Much of

A still from the movie Dharam Sankat Mein.

Rawal’s performance in his new religious satire is a repeat of what he has already done in OMG.

Now there is the added responsibility and burden of representing the BJP. Rawal takes on the tricky task

of being both non-religious and finally hugely respectful towards all religions. To make his pro-government stand even more cogent, the film is shot in and around Ahmedabad in the lives and colonies of Gujarati families. The film outwardly seems to scoff at ritualistic religion. The script, derived from Josh Apignanesi’s The Infidel turns the satire on anti-Semitism to a pro-Islamic statement. The very idea of talking religion so openly on screen seems audacious enough. There are scenes in the early part of the film where Rawal’s Gujarati Hindu character scuffles verbally with his Muslim neighbour, played with emphatic elan by Annu Kapoor. These scenes are the backbone of the film.

INDIAN MAN VANISHES AFTER KILLING WIFE BY A STAFF WRITER

H

ANOVER, MD – The police are hot on the trail of a man accused of killing his wife at a Dunkin’ Donuts in Anne Arundel County. Bhadresh Patel savagely murdered his wife inside the store near Arundel Mills Mall in Hanover on the night of April 12. The body of 21-year-old Palak was found in the kitchen. A customer who was suspicious after seeing no workers inside alerted the police around 10:50 p.m. An Anne Arundel County Police officer went in and found the victim who had been struck multiple times with a sharp weapon. Both Bhadresh and Palak worked at the store and lived within walking distance from there. Customers coming in for coffee and donuts on April 13 morning instead found the store closed and surrounded with police tape. The police say there was a prior report in December of a domestic incident at the couple’s apartment after a neighbor

Desai has already been serving life term in state prison since he was convicted and sentenced in 2013 for neglect and unsafe practices that led to the deadly outbreak of hepatitis C, the largest in the US. The plea by the 65-year-old Desai avoided a federal trial for the former member of the Nevada State Board of Medical Examiners and one-time owner of busy endoscopy and colonoscopy clinics. Prosecutors say Desai oversaw a southern Nevada medical empire where procedures were rushed to save time; protective gowns, devices and vials of anesthesia were reused to save pennies; and bills to insurance companies were inflated to reap millions of dollars. US Attorney Daniel Bogden said Desai agreed as part of his plea deal to forfeit about $2.2 million in property to the federal government. Defense attorney Richard Wright said Desai’s family was relieved to put the court cases to rest. The judge set sentencing for July 9. Desai’s likely federal sentence of 57 months would be served concurrently with his state prison term for the hepatitis case. The federal case against Desai and former clinic manager Tonya Rushing focused on fraudulent Medicare, Medicaid and private insurance bills. Rushing pleaded guilty in July to conspiracy to commit health care fraud in an agreement to pay $50,000 restitution plus a portion of $8.1 million in cash and property. She is due for sentencing on May 4.

Man dupes parents of abducted kids BY A STAFF WRITER

N

EW YORK -- A 49-year-old man was charged on April 1 with defrauding parents of kidnapped children, including falsely promising some of them of bringing back their children allegedly abducted from the US and taken to India. Peter Senese, of Brooklyn, New York, allegedly duped parents of abducted children into believing he had military and legal resources and a data base for tracking and recovering abducted children, who have been taken abroad. Senese was arrested on March 31 and produced in federal court on April 1. He is accused of wire fraud and faces up to 30 years in prison. US Attorney for the Southern District of New York Preet Bharara said Senese founded the “I CARE Foundation,” which advertised itself as a “self-funded non-profit organization dedicated to preventing child abduction and trafficking.” Senese allegedly defrauded parents whose children were victims of international abduction by falsely representing that he could rescue their children and bring them back to the US in exchange for money for his purported rescue

Peter Senese operations. The Indian American prosecutor said Senese “fed a pack of lies” to desperate parents by telling them that he could, for a price, locate and recover their kidnapped children. “In fact, he could do no such thing, but that didn’t stop him from allegedly repeatedly reaching out to the parents for more money to fund his non-existent rescue mission,” Bharara said. The complaint filed against him cited instances in 2013 of Senese promising parents to bring back their children allegedly abducted from New York and taken to India. Senese met the parent, described as “victim 1” in the complaint and promised him that he could return the child from India to the US within weeks. Over the course of next months, he took

thousands of dollars from the parent, saying he needed the money for his “rescue operation expenses.” He appeared on a local radio program with the victim parent and sent numerous text messages to the parents and emails stating, in part, that he was either in India or an unspecified “remote location” and that the child would be returned to the US in a matter of days. One of the text messages he sent to the parent concerned was that his return from India “might take a few additional days because of a change in Indian law.” Senese similarly defrauded another parent whose child was abducted and taken to India, the complaint said. He promised to the parent that he would speak with “judges in India” to arrange for the child to be returned to the US. The children he had promised to recover have never been reunited with their parents so far. Senese also duped his victims into believing that he was working with a team of former members of the US Army component Delta Force. Prosecutors said he had not travelled outside the US for years and when he had claimed that he was in foreign locations, he was actually in Miami, New York or Los Angeles.

Robberies in Indian homes: 6 charged BY A STAFF WRITER

N

EW YORK – Six people, including three women, part of an armed robbery gang, have been charged with carrying out robberies and assaulting at gunpoint targeting homes of Indian Americans and other Asian-origin people in Michigan and Texas. Chaka Castro, 40, Juan Olaya, 35, Octavius Scott, 22, Jakeyra Augustus 21, Rodney Granger, 19, and Johnisha Williams, 19, of Houston were charged on April 1 in connection with the robberies and are currently in custody. According to the indictment, the defendants committed four armed home invasion robberies in the greater Ann Arbor area in Michigan over the Thanksgiving weekend in November 2014, as well as additional armed robberies in the greater Dallas area in early December 2014. The crooks allegedly used a similar modus operandi in each of the robberies. According to the indictment, they typically used female decoys to knock on the victims’ doors and gain entry, or they merely forced entry themselves. Once inside, members of the robbery crew, disguised in bandanas and masks, allegedly brandished firearms to gain control of their victims, including children and then forced them at gunpoint into a single room of the home. Some robbers were allegedly assigned to bind the victims with duct tape and control them. At the same time, others ransacked the homes in search of cash, jewelry and electronics. According to allegations in the indictment, Castro was the leader of the enterprise and coordinated with Olaya to generate lists of robbery targets by conducting research on the Internet, among other methods, to identify families of Asian and Indian origin. Castro then assigned his accomplices to carry out the armed robberies of these targeted families. “The armed robberies allegedly committed by this organized criminal group were horrific home invasions that spread fear through Asian and Indian communities across multiple states,” Assistant Attorney General Leslie Caldwell of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division said.

COP GETS THE STICK FOR ABUSING UBER DRIVER BY A STAFF WRITER

N

EW YORK -- A New York City Uber driver was repeatedly berated recently by a New York Police Department detective who asked him what planet he was from and how long he had lived in the country. A video of the incident, captured by Indian American passenger Sanjay Seth, shows NYPD Detective Patrick Cherry screaming at Humayun Chaudhry, believed to be of South Asian descent. The altercation apparently began when Chaudhry gestured to Cherry--who was in an unmarked vehicle--to use his blinkers while parking. Cherry then went over to Chaudhry’s vehicle and began hurling a stream of expletives, accusing the immigrant driver of three traffic violations. “Stop it with your mouth, stop it with your ‘for what, sir?,’ stop f***ing with that bullshit,” Cherry--who at the time was assigned to the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force--screamed at the driver after he pulled him over, according to the video. “I don’t know what f***ing planet you’re on,” shouted Cherry, leaning threateningly into Chaudhry’s vehicle. Seth, who captured the incident on video, wrote on his Facebook page that Cherry was ranting and throwing items

Uber driver Humayun Chaudhry

into Chaudhry’s cab. As the cop went off to assign Chaudhry a ticket, Seth attempted to placate the upset driver. “I think he’s obviously on a power trip right now,” said the passenger, who works with the Regional Plan Association, a non-profit organization based in New York. “It’s an abuse of power,” said Seth, calling Cherry a “d**k.” He advised Chaudhry not to say anything to Cherry when he returned. Cherry returned with a ticket, saying: “Next time you do it again...” Chaudhry responded “okay.” The detective set off on another rant. “Okay for what? You gonna let me finish talking? Who do you think you’re talking to here?” The driver attempted to apologize: “Sir, I’m not saying nothing.” Cherry shouted, according

to the video: “You’re driving up my ass when I’m trying to park the car. I don’t care what you have to say.” He then asked Chaudhry how long he had lived in the country; the driver responded that he had lived in the US for two years, which prompted derision from Cherry, according to the video capture. “The only reason you’re not getting handcuffed, and not getting to jail and getting summons in this precinct is because I have other things to do. This isn’t important to me. You’re not important to me,” shouted Cherry, handing Chaudhry a ticket. Cherry--who now faces suspension after Seth’s video went viral on social media--has been stripped of his gun and badge, and re-assigned from the Joint Terrorism Task Force. NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton issued a public apology to Chaudhry on April 1 and said the matter is under internal investigation. “I want to extend an apology to the driver of that vehicle and the two passengers in that vehicle for the behavior of that officer,” Bratton said at a press conference. “That officer’s behavior reflected poorly on everyone who wears our uniform. In that kind of encounter, anger like that is unacceptable. In any kind of encounter, discourtesy like that and language like that is unacceptable.”

Using cells derived from human blood vessels, the researchers found that the polyphenols — epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) from green tea and procyanidin from apples — stopped a crucial signalling function of VEGF. “If this effect happens in the body as well, it provides very strong evidence for a mechanism that links dietary polyphenols and beneficial health effects,” Kroon noted. The study appeared in Molecular Nutrition & Food Research.

Stronger muscles make healthier bones IANS, LONDON

H

igher muscle mass, not fat mass, leads to healthier bone development in children, suggests new research. These findings point to the importance of early childhood physical activity to optimise muscle and bone growth,” said lead investigator of the study Rebecca Moon from the University of Southampton. For the study, detailed measurements of 200 children enrolled in the Southampton Women’s Survey were taken soon after birth and then again at ages six to seven years old. They assessed bone mineral density, shape and size of the tibia (the shin bone), and body composition and found a link between the amount of lean muscle and healthy bone development.

A 10 percent increase in peak bone mass will delay the onset of osteoporosis by 13 years, Moon added. The team also found that the relationship between changes in lean muscle and bone development was stronger in girls than in boys, despite the ages of the children ruling out the onset of puberty as a factor.

The photographs that the participants saw in the study ranged from the extremely unpleasant

(crying, malnourished children) to the neutral (a cow in a field) to the very pleasant (young children playing with cats). Results showed that participants, who took acetaminophen rated all the photographs less extremely than did those who took the placebo. In other words, positive photos were not seen as positively under the influence of acetaminophen and negative photos were not seen as negatively. The same was true of their emotional reactions. “People who took acetaminophen didn’t feel the same highs or lows as did the people who took placebos,” Way said. So, think again before you pop a pill. The study was published online in Psychological Science.

Pain relievers may kill pleasures in life IANS, WASHINGTON

T

hink again before you pop a painkiller as researchers have found that along with pain, they can also reduce pleasure, something you may not want your drug to do. Acetaminophen, a common pain reliever used in hundreds of over-the-counter and prescription medicines, blunts positive emotions, the findings showed. “Rather than just being a pain reliever, acetaminophen can be seen as an all-purpose emotion

reliever,” said lead author Geoffrey Durso from the Ohio State University, US. In the study, participants who took acetaminophen reported less strong emotions when they saw both very pleasant and very disturbing photos, when compared to those who took placebos. People in the study, who took the pain reliever did not appear to know they were reacting differently. “Most people probably are not aware of how their emotions may be impacted when they take aceta-

minophen,” said Baldwin Way, assistant professor of psychology at the Ohio State University.

“Bone strength and size is important because they are significant factors in long term osteoporosis and fracture risk,” Moon said.

Ayurveda FOR EYES Ayurveda can successfully cure several eye ailments ‘not normally curable by other medical sciences’, claim doctors at Kerala’s first Ayurvedic opthalmic hospital M.R. NARAYAN SWAMY, KOOTHATTUKULAM (KERALA)

T

he world’s first ayurvedic ophthalmic hospital here says that more and more people are turning to the ancient Indian system of medicine to resolve eye problems. Doctors at Sreedhareeyam Ayurvedic Eye Hospital and Research Center near Kochi assert that ayurveda can cure many eye diseases without surgery. “Before we came in, there was no ayurvedic medicine in this field,” says N.P.P. Namboothiri, the hospital’s managing director and chief physician. Kerala draws tens of thousands of Indians and foreigners every year

in search of ayurvedic treatment. But few outside Kerala appear to know what ayurveda can do in the field of ophthalmology. Eye diseases are rampant today, caused in part by long hours of work on computers, poor eating habits, inadequate hours of sleep etc. Eye disorders can also result from watching TV for long hours and reading small print continuously. “Many of these diseases can be completely cured through simple treatments we offer,” Namboothiri claims. Hailing from a family of ayurvedic practitioners, Namboothiri set up Sreedhareeyam with

Global wellness summit in India NEW DELHI: India will host the seventh edition of the annual Global Spa & Wellness Summit (GSWS) for the first time. It will be held in Gurgaon between Oct 5-7. “The GSWS is a major force behind innovative and healthy growth in the wellness industry, and we think that India, with its ancient history of wellness, is the perfect location for global leaders to gather,” Minister of State for Tourism K. Chiranjeevi said in a statement. The growing importance of wellness and wellness tourism worldwide is one of the topics which will be discussed at the summit.

“The government of India has taken a leadership role by identifying wellness and wellness tourism as important contributors to the nation’s economy,” said Susie Ellis, chairman and CEO of the GSWS. She considers India is an apt destination to explore the roots of spa and wellness. “As the birthplace of yoga, meditation, and ayurveda, India is an ideal location to explore the historic roots of spa and wellness, as well as examine new global markets and revenue opportunities,” added Ellis. The First Global Destination Spa Forum for “destination spas” will also take place simultaneously. — IANS

five beds in 1999. It has expanded to 350 beds and also gets around 200 daily patients. Sreedhareeyam has 16 centres in Kerala and elsewhere in India. “If treated early, ayurveda strengthens the nervous system and prevents degeneration of the optic nerves,”

Namboothiri says. According to him, even complicated and rare diseases that affect the optic nerve and retina that lead to blindness can be successfully treated with ayurveda. Major eye diseases treated at Sreedhareeyam include diabetic

Keep pets cool in summer

New molecule to stop cancer

W

ith summers already on peak, people should provide special care to their pets in order to keep them hydrated and healthy, the Humane Society International (HSI) has said. The first and the foremost is a visit to the veterinarian for an early summer check-up and get the pet tested for heartworms. It is of utmost importance to keep the pet free from flea and ticks, the animal protection organization said. “Generally, pets do give out a signal if they are overheating like panting, staring, drooling, rapid heart-

retinopathy, macular degeneration, glaucoma, cataract and detachment of retina. The hospital manufactures all medicines and formulations utilized in eye and other treatment. Shalakya Tantra is the branch of ayurveda that deals with ailments above the neck. Ayurvedic texts deal with 76 eye, 28 ear and 31 nose diseases. Sreedhareeyam boasts of a large collection of ancient ayurvedic manuscripts of medicinal preparations and treatment methods. These inscriptions in old Tamil and Malayalam are on palm leaves and have been handed down by ancestors of the Namboothiri family. “We even treat and cure eye problems not normally curable by other medical sciences,” Namboothiri says. “Today, our hospital has brought new respect to the science of ayurvedic ophthalmology.”

beat and vomiting etc. In such a condition a vet should be consulted immediately,” the HSI said in a statement. “Animals with flat faces, like pugs and Persian cats, are more susceptible to heat stroke since they cannot pant as effectively. They should be kept in air-conditioned rooms as much as possible,” it added. A constant supply of fresh water must be ensured as dogs and cats dehydrate rapidly. In addition, the exercise for your pet should be light as intense working out can result in a heatstroke.

LONDON: Scientists have synthesized a molecule that targets and destroys a key protein responsible for development of cervical and other cancers, says a study. The E7 protein is produced early in the life cycle of the human papillomavirus (HPV) and blocks the body’s natural defences against uncontrolled division of cells that can lead to cancer. Researchers at the University of Leeds’ School of Molecular and Cellular Biology have synthesized a molecule, RNA aptamer, which latches onto the carcinogenic protein and targets it for destruction. There are many types of human papillomavirus. Some are transmitted by sexual contact and associated not only with cervical cancer but also head and neck cancer, reports Science Daily. “We need to maintain screening and to develop novel therapeutic strategies,” said Nicola Stonehouse, lead author of the study. — IANS
