Pushing for long-awaited reforms of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), Modi emphasizes that the success of UN peacekeeping ‘ultimately depends not on the weapons… but on the moral force that UNSC decisions command’

India pushes for UNSC reform I IANS, NEW YORK

ndia on September 28 announced plans to contribute an additional 850 troops to the UN Peacekeeping Missions around the world and also pushed for reform of the UN Security Council. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his address at the Leaders’ Summit on UN Peacekeeping here, also said India is ready to contribute monetarily to a memorial for slain UN Peacekeepers. Modi said India’s commitment to UN Peacekeeping remains strong and will grow. “We have announced new intended contributions to the UN Peacekeeping operations. “These include additional battalion of up to 850 troops in existing or new operations; additional three police units with higher representation of female peacekeepers; commitment to provide critical enablers; deployment of technical personnel in UN missions; and, additional training for peacekeepers at our facilities in India and in the field,” Modi said. Pushing for long-awaited reforms of the UN Security Council, Modi stressed that the success of UN peacekeeping “ultimately depends not on the weapons that the soldiers carry, but on the moral force that decisions of the UN Security Council command”. “We must complete the longpending task of reforms within a fixed time frame of the UN Security Council to preserve the relevance and effectiveness of the UN,” he said. Elaborating on the Indian contribution to the UN Peacekeeping operations, he said that 180,000 Indian troops have participated in UN peacekeeping missions —

more than from any other country. “India has participated in 48 of the 69 UN peacekeeping missions so far. 161 Indian peacekeepers have made the supreme sacrifice while serving in UN missions,” he said. Pointing out to challenges that peacekeepers face, he said the soldiers are called upon not only to maintain peace and security, but also address a range of complex challenges. “Mandates are ambitious; but, resources are often inadequate. Mandates sometimes make peacekeepers party to conflicts, putting at risk their lives and success of their missions,” he said. “The prob-

lems arise to a large extent because Troop Contributing Countries do not have a role in the decisionmaking process. They do not have adequate representation in senior management and as Force Commanders,” he said, raising the demand of troop contributing countries for greater say in the UN Peacekeeping mandate. “Peacekeeping missions should be deployed prudently, with full recognition of their limitations and in support of political solutions,” Modi said. He said India is pleased that the High-level Independent Panel on Peace Operations has recognized these issues.

“We thank UN secretary general for his prompt report on the Panel’s recommendations. We look forward to their early consideration,” Modi said. Earlier, in the speech Modi said India has been providing training to peacekeeping officers from a large number of countries. “Till date, we have trained nearly 800 officers from 82 countries.” He also thanked US President Barack Obama for hosting the Summit on Peacekeeping, terming it timely because it is the 70th anniversary of the UN and also “because the security environment is changing, the demands on peace-

keeping are growing and the resources are harder to find”. In the beginning of the speech, he said: “The foundations of the United Nations were laid by the brave soldiers on the battlefields of Second World War. By 1945, they included 2.5 million men of the Indian Army, the largest volunteer force in history. More than 24000 lost their lives and nearly half of that went missing.” “The legacy of that sacrifice is shared by three countries present here. They remain today among the largest contributors to the United Nations Peacekeeping Operations,” he added.

Modi leaves a blazing trail

Prime Minister Narendra Modi wraps up his five-day US visit with a summit meeting with US President Barack Obama; meets US tech giants in San Jose IANS, WASHINGTON

I

ndian Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrapped up yet another hugely successful visit to the US with a warm hug for President Barack Obama, a courtship with Silicon valley and a love fest with the Indian diaspora. As Obama said after an hour-long meeting in New York on September 28 with “good friend” Modi, building on his “wonderful visit” to Delhi in January, “We’ve elevated our ties. We’ve committed ourselves to a new partnership between our two countries.” Modi agreed they had “achieved significant progress in our bilateral cooperation and

international partnership” and welcomed “the progress in giving shape to our joint strategic vision on Asia Pacific and Indian Ocean region”. As anticipated, Obama chose to focus on climate issues. India’s leadership at the Paris climate change conference in December, he believed, “will set the tone not just for today but for decades

to come”. Obama said he was encouraged by “the aggressive nature” of Modi’s commitment to clean energy, Modi said he and Obama “share an uncompromising commitment on climate change without affecting our ability to meet the development aspirations of humanity”. But Modi also made it clear to Obama, French British Francois Hollande and British Prime Minister David Cameron, whom he met separately, that a negative approach of capping emissions or adding restrictions was not going to help. Instead a positive approach that includes help for developing countries like financing and technology transfer was needed, he said. Modi also won

renewed support from the big three for India getting a permanent seat in the Security Council and asked them to have the UN reform process completed within a “fixed time frame”. Modi said after meeting with Obama “we have resolved to further deepen cooperation on counter-terrorism and radicalism”. But beyond the power meetings with Obama and other world leaders, the real measure of Modi’s success was writ in his wooing the big business and winning over the tech titans of Silicon Valley. From Satya Nadella and Sundar Pichai, Indian-American chief executives of Microsoft and Google to Apple’s Tim Cook and Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg everyone seemed keen to get behind Modi’s digital dream. If Pichai offered to bring wireless Internet or WiFi to 500 railway stations across India, Nadella outlined Microsoft’s plan to help Indian government take low-cost broadband to half a million villages.

Qualcomm promised a 10 billion rupee fund for start-ups in India “to transform India into a digitally empowered society and knowledge economy”. It will also set up a number of ‘design houses’ for product innovation in India. And selling his dream of turning India’s $8 trillion economy into a $20 trillion economy at a Facebook Townhall with a promise of four Ds — demography, democracy, demand and now de-regulation — he told investors: “Want to Invest? I Have an Address - India.” But it was the rock star like reception he received in Silicon valley reminiscent of the “Madison Square Garden moment” on the eve of his summit with Obama last year that wowed them all. Modi’s trip, said the Washington Post, had made Silicon Valley “a must-see destination for world leaders” and “signals the rising influence and economic power wielded by this technology hotbed.”

India-US ties very deep: Modi NEW YORK : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 28 said his US visit demonstrates the “extraordinary depth and diversity” of the bilateral relationship and a lot of ground has been covered in his five-day stay in the US. In a series of tweets, before leaving for India, Modi thanked the American people for their warm welcome and hospitality. “My USA visit demonstrates the extraordinary depth and diversity of our relationship. A lot of ground has been covered in these few days,”

Modi tweeted. “I got the opportunity to attend a wide spread of programs, each of which generated many positive outcomes that will benefit India. “I shared my thoughts on key global issues at the @UN & also met many world leaders to strengthen India’s ties with the global community. “My gratitude to the American people for the very warm welcome & the hospitality wherever my delegation & I went,” the prime minister posted.

Modi says India would releaze its commitments on contributions to climate change on Gandhi Jayanti — Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary — which falls on October 2

A ‘power-packed Monday’ IANS, NEW YORK

A

t the “Power Monday” meetings with leaders of the US, Britain and France that was dominated by climate issues, Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared India was ready to play a leadership role in fighting climate change. Britain’s Prime Minister David Cameron came to the Waldorf Astoria Hotel to meet Modi. The meetings with Obama and President Francois Hollande of France took place at the UN headquarters. Microsoft founder Bill Gates dropped in on the meeting with Hollande. Modi said India would release its commitments on contributions to climate change on Gandhi Jayanti (October 2), a day after the deadline for nations to submit them in preparation for the upcoming Paris conference on climate change, external affairs ministry spokesperson Vikas Swarup said. Modi urged the three leaders to facilitate the speedy adoption of the Comprehensive Convention on Terrorism, which has been blocked by some nations over the definition of terrorism. After his meeting with Obama, Modi said: “We have resolved to further deepen cooperation on counter terrorism and radicalism.” All the three leaders said they supported India getting a permanent seat in the Security Council. India would like reforms during the current General Assembly ses-

sion that ends next September. On climate change, Modi made it clear to the three leaders that a negative approach of capping emissions or adding restrictions was not going to help, Swarup said. Modi said that instead a positive approach that includes help for developing countries like financing and technology transfer was needed. In meetings with both Cameron and Obama, joint efforts on cyber security came up for discussion. New Delhi and Washington conduct a cyber security dialogue.

Modi discussed cooperation on intelligence and cyber security with Cameron. Asked at the briefing if Pakistan came up in the context of dealing with terrorism, Swarup said there were references to that country and it was recognized that all countries had to fight terrorism. Answering a question if the Kashmir issue, which Pakistan has been raking up at the UN and in bilateral meetings, figured in the meetings that Modi had with the three leaders, Swarup said there was a broad acknowledgment that it was a bilateral issue and the three

leaders would be happy to see India and Pakistan deal with it themselves. Modi invited both France and Britain to “Make in India” by encouraging businesses to manufacture in India. The stalled negotiations on European Union-India Bilateral Trade and Investment Agreement was mentioned by Modi in his meeting with Hollande. The EU stopping 700 drugs from India on the basis of a report by a single inspector was pointed out as one of the major stumbling blocks.

The broad agreement for India to buy Rafale fighter jets from France was going well, Swarup said. Coming after last week’s IndiaUS Strategic and Commercial Dialogue, those subjects featured prominently in the meeting between Modi and Obama. Obama said: “We also had a chance to talk about trade and investment, where our governments and business leaders met again last week to forge new partnerships to create jobs and opportunities for Indians and Americans.” Obama said he welcomed Modi’s call to the large and successful Indian diaspora to contribute their talents to India’s progress. The US and India are committed to a Bilateral Investment Treaty, Kwatra said. Both countries have prepared model texts for the treaty and they have to be reconciled through negotiations for a final version. On the defense front, India and the US were making good progress on an aircraft carrier technology agreement and will be identifying more such projects. Kwatra said Obama and Modi looked at the convergence of Asia policies, with India’s Act East and America’s Pivot to Asia. Modi asked US support for India’s membership in the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) group of 21 countries stretching form Asia to the Americas.

MODI CONQUERS SILICON VALLEY: US MEDIA The US media mentions Narendra Modi’s visit to the Silicon Valley with a degree of awe, with the influential NYT noting he ‘came to Silicon Valley and wooed and wowed’ IANS, WASHINGTON

U

S media gave pride of place to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s interactions with Silicon Valley’s tech titans and his rockstar-like reception by the Indian diaspora, with the New York Times saying he had conquered the tech Mecca. In a story headlined “Narendra

Modi, Indian Prime Minister, Conquers Silicon Valley”, the influential daily noted he “came to Silicon Valley over the weekend and wooed and wowed the tech crowd”. With Modi spending time in the heart of Silicon Valley, the Times said his visit “was a contrast to the command performance that China’s leader, Xi Jinping, had technology chief executives put on

for him last week”. It indicated “Modi’s desire to build up India as a tech destination”, the daily said suggesting “Modi may well get his wish, as companies including Facebook and Google are racing to get into India after being shut out of China”. The Washington Post said Silicon Valley had become “a must-see destination for world leaders.

“Modi’s trip to Silicon Valley -the first to California by any Indian leader in more than 30 years -- signals the rising influence and economic power wielded by this technology hotbed,” it said. Modi’s visit “was partly a recognition of the tremendous Indian influence at tech firms”, the Post said noting, “Nearly 16 percent of tech startups have Indian founders”

and “Indians and Indian Americans make up an outsize proportion of the tech workforce”. “India offers a tantalizing opportunity for tech firms such as Apple, Google and Facebook,” it said noting, “India has 1.25 billion residents but lags far behind the United States in the digital infrastructure needed to spur its online economy”.

Modi and Sharif: No handshake, just a wave

Narendra Modi with Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk during a tour of the company in San Jose on September 26.

CLEAR GOALS BEYOND THE HYPE What did Musk and Modi discuss? In any case, it may not be a bad idea to consider a Tesla pilot project anywhere in India that can remove the need for hugely capital intensive power plants MAYANK CHHAYA, NEW YORK

A

ll prime ministerial visits are calibrated for a specific goal, be it economic, diplomatic, political or cultural. That is true of all Indian prime ministers but it is especially true of Narendra Modi. Once you get past his gushing, uncritical fan base, those goals become sharper. A striking example of that is his visit to Silicon Valley in general and Tesla Energy headquarters and Facebook town hall meeting in particular. The prime minister’s choice of South African-born CanadianAmerican technology entrepreneur Elon Musk’s facility in Silicon Valley on Saturday was significant for its potential whose details are not well known to many. Perhaps the primary objective of the prime ministerial visit can be found in a backgrounder on the company’s website where it explains: “Tesla Powerwall is a rechargeable lithium-ion battery designed to store energy at a residential level for load shifting, backup power and self-consumption of solar power generation.” What Powerwall does is remove the need for the hugely capital intensive power plants, environmental costs and damage and expensive distribution network because it stores power in the Powerwall gener-

ated from solar panels on the roof. What mobile phones are to telephony, Powerwall could potentially be to electricity. It makes electricity more personalized. Priced right, this can transform India’s energy needs as it can around the world. It is not clear what specifically Musk and Modi might have discussed but it may not be a bad idea to consider a Tesla pilot project anywhere in India.

Being the first social media-savvy politician of India, Modi was at home at Facebook’s headquarters That explains the prime minister’s engagement with Musk, who is often jocularly compared to the Marvel comic book superhero Iron Man also known as Tony Stark because of Musk’s varied entrepreneurial interests, including rocket science and space travel. Modi’s town hall style meeting with Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg was perhaps closer to his larger socio-cultural and political goals of keeping his vast following on social media abreast of the goings-on in his government in the

face of creeping doubts over its performance so far. Being the first social media-savvy politician of India with a keen eye for what to let consumers enjoy, the prime minister was at home at Facebook’s headquarters. He said many interesting things but what perhaps stood out from a political standpoint was his observation that social media had created an environment where instead of facing the electorate every five years politicians now face it every five minutes with millions parsing every word and offering their snap judgment. In yet another brilliant repackaging of the Manmohan Singh government’s ambitious plan to connect 600,000 villages and 250,000 panchayats the current prime minster has managed to very successfully sell his “Digital India” vision which draws on many of the same ideas. Making broadband connectivity universal in India through optical fiber was a key feature of the last government’s plan, some of which was already in various stages of implementation when it lost the 2014 general election. It is to Modi’s credit though that he has generated remarkable enthusiasm about it to the extent that Facebook offered its users a way to add a semi-transparent screen on their profile pictures in the colors of the Indian flag. It is part of Facebook’s “Support Digital India” campaign.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi did not exchange any greetings with his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif though being in close proximity.

UNITED NATIONS: Days of speculation ended with a wave across a table. Would Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Nawaz Sharif meet, pundits, diplomats and journalists wondered. Or would they shake hands? Or have a “pullaside” — a quick conversation on the sidelines? They finally got their answer at Modi’s last UN event about four hours before he left on Monday: They exchanged a couple of waves and smiles across the table at the Peacekeeping Summit convened by President Barack Obama. And that was it. Sharif waved first and Modi responded. Modi and Sharif shared the same hotel, the Waldorf Astoria, but avoiding each other was easy. The hotel has several entrances and leaders’ entries and exits through driveways that lead

right into the middle of the building are carefully orchestrated. Some diplomatic gestures are carefully arranged. One of Modi’s diplomatic assignments listed for Monday included a “handshake/exchange of greeting” with Malta’s Prime Minister Joseph Muscat as Modi approaches his table. But the wave wasn’t. When Modi and Sharif met on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit Ufa in Russia in July, they opened the possibilities of a de-freeze in ties between the two countries. However, the deep freeze has returned with firing across the border and the cancellation of the talks between the National Security Advisers. Now its time to decipher the nuances of the smiles and waves for clues to the next phase of diplomacy.

Ahimsa greatest dharma...

On July 11, 2006, seven serial blasts ripped through Mumbai’s suburban trains, killing hundreds; Public Prosecutor Raja Thakre demanded death penalty for eight convicts IANS, MUMBAI

A

Mumbai special court on September 30 awarded the death penalty to five and life in prison to seven others, all convicted in the 7/11 serial blasts on the city’s suburban trains which killed 189 people. On September 11, Special Maharashtra Control of Organized Crime Act (MCOCA) Judge Y. D. Shinde had found all the 12 guilty of their role in the July 11, 2006, serial blasts in the suburban trains — Mumbai's lifeline, which also injured 817 peak-hour commuters rushing home that rainy evening. Those awarded the death penalty are: Kamal A. Ansari, 37, Ehtesham K. Siddiqui, 30, Faisal Attaur Rehman Sheikh, 36, Asif Khan alias Junaid, 38, Naved Hussain Khan, 30. Seven other convicts awarded life term in jail are: medico Tanvir A.

NEWS DIGEST CBI takes over Sheena murder probe MUMBAI: The CBI has taken over the probe into the sensational Sheena Bora murder case and registered complaints against three prime accused, an official said here on September 29. T

he apex consumer court on September 30 said it will hear Nestle’s arguments on fresh tests conducted on its popular Maggi noodles on October 8, and take up the larger class action suit filed against the Swiss giant by the end of next month. The decision was taken after an initial hearing of arguments regarding the class action suit filed by the central government against Nestle India for alleged unfair trade practices. Appearing for the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Additional Solicitor General Sanjay Jain sought

more time from the commission to present the fresh tests on the 27 sealed samples of different variants of Maggi collected from the market, to which Nestle had raised objections. Jain, along with counsels Mrinalini Sen Gupta and Prabhsahay Kaur, also placed the samples of dif-

ferent variants they wished to be tested before the court. But the Nestle counsel wanted to know from where they had been, since the product was withdrawn from the market on June 5. A bench of the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, comprising Justice V.K. Jain and Justice B.C. Gupta, said the court will meet again on October 8 to hear the arguments of Nestle India over the fresh tests. The commission also questioned why Nestle India should have a problem with the testing of their own products, and said, “The government wasn’t producing the product”.

They include 13 Pakistani nationals. Stunned by the punishment, the relatives of the convicts who were awarded death sentence, said they would challenge the Special MCOCA Court verdict in the Bombay High Court. In the verdict, Special Judge Shinde found that M. Faisal Attaur Rehman Shaikh, who was awarded death penalty, had gone to Pakistan twice for training. With the successful launch of ASTROSAT, India gained an entry into the select club of nations having its own space observatory after the US, Japan, Russia and Europe. ASTROSAT, will observe the universe through optical, ultraviolet, low and high energy X-ray components of the electromagnetic spectrum, whereas most other scientific satellites are capable of observing

through a narrow wavelength band. Exactly at 10 a.m. the 44.4 metres tall weighing around 320 ton polar satellite launch vehicle’s XL variant

(PSLV-XL) blasted off the first launch pad. The PSLV-XL rocket with seven satellites cumulatively weighing 1,631 kg climbed up

steadily gathering speed amidst the cheers of Indian space agency officials. The expendable rocket carried Rs.1.8 billion ASTROSAT, India’s first dedicated multi-wavelength space observatory that will help in understanding the universe, and six other foreign satellites. While ASTROSAT with a fiveyear life span weighed 1,513 kg, the six foreign satellites (four from the US and one each from Indonesia and Canada) together weighed 118 kg. Incidentally, this is the first time that an Indian rocket launched satellites from the US. The Hubble owned and launched by US in 1990 is 10 times heavier than the ASTROSAT and is said to cost $2.5 billion.

The agreement was reached at the inaugural US-India-Japan Trilateral Ministerial dialogue held here September 29 on the sidelines of the 70th UN General Assembly session. US Secretary of State John Kerry hosted the dialogue with Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida. Representing a quarter of the world’s population and economic production power, the three countries highlighted their shared support for peace, democracy, prosperity, and a rules-based international order, according to a joint statement. to our security and economic interests,” said Swaraj. “The sea lanes of communication in the region are the lifetime - the lifeline of India’s trade and commercial externalities.” “To realize our mutual objectives, we intend to grow our exchanges into complete trilateral engagement in other areas, including regional connectivity and humanitarian assistance in disaster situation,” she said.

“The Pacific and the Indian Oceans are beginning to link together as oceans of freedom and prosperity, driving the advent of a new era when Indo-Pacific region becomes the epicenter of global prosperity,” said Kishida. “The trilateral partnership of the US, India, and Japan has an extremely important role to play in pulling this new era forward,” he said. The joint statement said the three ministers also underscored the importance of international law and peaceful settlement of disputes; freedom of navigation and overflight; and unimpeded lawful commerce, including in the South China Sea, it said. Russia, US to ‘cooperate’ on syria crisis IANS, MOSCOW

R

ussia and the US have agreed to continue cooperation in spite of differences in settling Syrian crisis, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said. “(Monday’s meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart Barack Obama) was a very constructive discussion,” Xinhua quoted Lavrov as saying on September 29. The two leaders met on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. The 100-minute meeting was mainly dedicated to anti-terrorism task in the Middle East, in particular Syria. “We did not agree on any specific steps, but on continuing our cooperation and discussions between ministries of foreign affairs and of defense in order to identify

specific ways and means to achieve our common goals,” an online statement released by the ministry quoted Lavrov as saying. “We all agreed that our common goal is to defeat Islamic State (IS), not to allow IS to establish the ‘caliphate’, which they are planning

to expand further to huge territories ... Both Russia and the United States absolutely determined not to allow them to succeed.” The minister urged that different forces should be coordinated in the anti-terror fight in “pragmatic, reasonable and rational” way.

UNITED NATIONS: Afghanistan’s Chief Executive Officer Abdullah Abdullah has hit out against Pakistan for harboring terrorists who crossover to “indiscriminately victimize our citizens” and accused it of going back on its promise to crack down on them. “The presence of terrorist sanctuaries and support networks in Pakistan continue to cause trouble inside Afghanistan,” Abdullah told the General Assembly on September 28. “Another fact is clear to Afghans across the board: Were it not for external support systems, access to arms and munitions, rest areas and hospitals, and funding and training, as part of strategic collusion with powerful elements in our neighborhood, this guerrilla style low-intensity warfare would have been history by now.” “The Haqqani network has been identified as a main culprit and needs to be dismantled as has been our demand in the past,” Abdullah said. In the clearest sign of Kabul’s disillusionment with Islamabad, Abdullah accused it of going back on its word. When the new government headed jointly by Abdullah and President Ashraf Ghani took over in Afghanistan last year, it tried to foster closer ties with Pakistan, reversing the previous president Hamid Karzai’s policy. “We call on Pakistan to do what its leadership promised to us a few months ago when they agreed to crack down on known terror outfits-meaning the enemies of Afghanistan,” he said.

Kumar said he was prompted to form the political group by concerns that President Barack Obama and Democratic leaders are undermining the economic recovery with regulations, and dropping the ball overseas. The RHC, which will officially start this autumn, will back candidates that will focus on cutting US debt, supporting a strong national security policy against terrorist groups such as the Islamic State It also advocates reducing aid to India’s foes like Pakistan, and expanding trade with India. For example, Kumar said he wants to convince US companies to shift manufacturing operations from China to India. Satchidananda Panda and Shubhroz Gill from the Salk Institute have developed the app that can collect, analyse and interpret patterns of food intake in humans. “The study is about developing

methods and offers some preliminary insight into what and when people eat,” said Panda, associate professor in the Salk Institute’s regulatory biology laboratory. The duo have kept the app simple, only requiring users to send pictures of everything they ate or drank. Each click also captured metadata (such as the location where food was consumed) and recorded a timestamp. Users were healthy males and females between the ages of 21 and 55 who were not actively manag-

Suhel Seth, an otherwise brilliant actor whose character, Rishab Kukreja is modelled on the lines of Vijay Mallya along with Kiran Kumar as the senior industrialist Mr. Narang, are wasted on screen. Madhur’s writing is sedate, unenterprising and cheesy with dialogues like, “Har bade actor ko to dus takes dene padathe hain. Aur aap ko, one take aur paise tumhare bank mein (Every big actor needs to give 10 takes. But you just need one take and the money will be in your bank).” Also, for a National Award winning director, his direction is carelessly chaotic and tacky. The music too offers nothing new and exciting. The songs are packaged as music videos and the lyrics don’t add any meaning to the narration. — Troy Ribeiro

Devon Ka Raja-Ganpati fete brings good fortune to ‘Little India’ The entire business community on Devon Ave was jubilant for having the Ganesh Festival in their midst, in the heart of Devon Avenue, which draws hordes of visitors from the whole of the Midwest area, thus kindling hopes of good business in the days to come.

BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- The streets of Devon Avenue reverberated with chants of ‘Ganapati Bapa, Moriya’ for 10 days from September 17 to 27 during the Ganesh Chaturthi 2015 festival organized by Regal Jewels in association with Hi India and Hindi Lovers Club. Hundreds of dyed-in-the-wool devotees descended on Devon Avenue for aarti and puja and enjoyed different cultural programs every day for 10 days at the Devon Ka RajaGanpati festival. The festival, which was celebrated for the second time this year at the same venue, evoked a huge response from entire Illinois. Darshan was open from 10 am to 9 pm and prasad was distributed every day after the aarti. Organizers Regal Foundation and Hi India said they were “grateful to all supporters, sponsors and volunteers, especially Debra Silverstein, alderwoman of the 50th ward office, who, without batting an eyelid, granted permission to celebrate” the festival in Devon Avenue and Talman Block. Indeed, residents and business owners of the entire neighbourhood gave a thumbs-up to the grand event by attending it in large numbers day after day. No wonder, the Ganpati festival was a stupendous success, bringing good fortune, peace and positive energy to one and all on Devon Avenue, a major east-west thoroughfare in the Chicago metropolitan area, which turned into Little India during the 10-day festivities marked by intense religious fervour and devotion. As pooja, aarti, bhajan, kirtan and prasad continued for 10 days, Pandit Nagendra Rao performed special poojas with assistance of Dilip Pandya.

Dedicated volunteers, hand-picked by organizers, worked with heart and soul not only during the 10-day festivities but also for several days ahead of the installation of the Ganesh idol to ensure a tremendous success for the event. The daily fare included, Monday--Shiv Pooja, Maharudrabhishekam and havan, Tuesday--special Ganesh Pooja and havan, Wednesday--Kunwarika pooja, Thursday-Guru poojan, Friday-- Laxmi Poojan and havan, Saturday--Satyanaran Katha and, finally, Sunday-- Ganesh Visarjan. A huge crowd enjoyed the visarjan procession and spellbinding fireworks followed by a garba program that went on till late. The procession for the final immersion was joined by countless devotees with music, dance, chanting and celebrating the event with gusto and merriment. The last day saw conclusion of the grand event with an impressive cultural extravaganza what with M K International hosting an exquisite outdoor block party for all residents of the neighbourhood.

Countless devotees who thronged the venue of the Devon Ka Raja-Ganpati fete day after day were spellbound when they had a glimpse of the eye-catching idol of the Elephant God. The event included various competitions; Ganesh Coloring Contest, Maan Kush Mithai, Bal Shivam Clay Project, Ankuth Chitra Kala and more. The M K International staff coordinated with more than a dozen singers, dancers, storytellers, and poets to dream up a fun-filled afternoon of Ganesh-themed performances. The show kicked off with a Ganesh Dance by 8-year-old wunderkind Sanjana Kumar. An Aarti song was performed by four- year-old Sia Anand and Stuti Dutta of STEM Montessori Academy. Professional performances included Rhythm and Grace and Rajasthani Dancer, Madhu Choudhary. Also showcased was the talent of Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Little Champs 2015 finalist Ashley Singh. All performances honored Lord Ganesha but it was the Bal Ganesh Fashion Show that

left the audience awestruck. Arsh Agarwal and Nishika Dubey also blessed the occasion in the form of Shiv Parvathi. The winners of the Art Contest included 4-year-old Pranav Jaitley and 12- year-old Aishani Dixit who submitted an oil-pastel Ganesh. Following a massive response this year, organizers Nirmal (Regal Jewels) and Hemant Brahmbhatt (Hi India) now expect a bigger crowd of devotees at Devon Avenue at next year’s Ganeshotsav. They thanked the devotees and the sponsors for making the event an enviable success. Plans are afoot for building a Ganesh temple in Devon Market, one of the oldest and largest South Asian markets in the US. In fact, many of them declared their wholehearted support for the shrine project and offered their voluntary service.

Raja Krishnamoorthi’s campaign picking up

BY DR. NILESH MEHTA TLANTA , GA – On September 20, a small group of local Indian community leaders and members gathered at the Asiana Banquet Hall in Atlanta to host a reception for Raja Krishnamoorthi of Illinois. Po p u l a r l y k n o w n a s R a j a , Krishnamoorthi is the lead contender in the Democratic party primary for the 8th congressional district of Illinois, with incumbent Tammy Duckworth vacating her seat to run for US Senate in 2016. Despite two other candidates running against him in the primaries, Raja is favored to win, having garnered many endorsements locally and nationwide. The function was organized by Dr. Srini Gangasani and Dr. Prasad Garimella to support this young second-generation Indian American leader. Tony Patel, current Chair of the Asian American Caucus of the Democratic Party of Georgia & AAHOA Regional Ambassador, spoke about the importance of voting to gain greater representation for the AAPI community by supporting Asian candidates nationally. Democratic State Representative Hugh

Man unloads guns in car trunk, held BY A STAFF WRITER ATERFORD, WI -Authorities say an 18-year-old man found on the roof of a school in southeastern Wisconsin had unloaded guns in the trunk of his car. Racine County Sheriff Christopher Schmaling says deputies were called on the night of September 28 on a report of a suspicious person on the roof of Woodfield Elementary School in the Village of Waterford.

Deputies found the man on the roof. He said he was there to retrieve a ball. While investigating, deputies found unloaded guns in the trunk of the man’s car, which was parked on school property. The man was arrested on suspicion of criminal trespass and possession of a firearm on school property. He was taken to jail. Authorities say the man was cooperative, and there is nothing to indicate any students or staffers are in danger.

collected, and came across as someone with knowledge, enthusiasm and a sense of humor. He talked about the financial hardship his family faced when he was a child and their first hand experience with welfare. He credited his involvement in the public sector as the Deputy Treasurer

of the State of Illinois, and his current experience as President of the small businesses Sivananthan Labs and Episolar, Inc. with giving him the perspectives to serve his constituents effectively, especially in the economic sector. Raja’s campaign has the support of nearly 100 prominent local Democrats and organizations. The list includes several US congressmen and women from Illinois, two Illinois state senators, retired US senators Adlai Stevenson III and Bill Bradley, chief political advisor to Obama David Axelrod, and many other powerful politicians from Illinois and across the nation. He was endorsed by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee as well. Dr. Prasad Garimella acknowledged with thanks all the sponsors and the volunteers of the event, including Dr. Seshu Sarma and Dr. Ravi Sarma, Mr. Ramesh (Ray) Thakkar, Dr. Sudhakar Jonnalagadda, Mr. Parmesh Erramilli, Dr. Syamala Erramilli, Mr. Pankaj Sutaria, Dr. Madhuri Namuduri, Mallareddy, Manjula Reddy, Sridhar Vakiti, Venkat Chennubhotla, Radha Chennubhotla, Sumedh Garimella and Eswar Burra.

Selena’s ‘Om’ thigh tattoo irks Hindus

Selena Gomez

BY A STAFF WRITER OLLYWOOD, CA-- Hindus have described American actor/singer Selena Gomez’s reported new ‘Om’ tattoo on her upper left thigh as highly “irreverent and disrespectful”. Distinguished Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada, has said that Hindus usually started and ended their prayers with ‘Om’, the mystical syllable containing the universe, which in Hinduism was used to introduce and conclude religious work. Such trivialization of ‘Om’ was upsetting to Hindus; and it was highly inappropriate for Selena to place on her thigh such revered and sacred symbol of Hinduism of high religious significance on her thigh, said Zed, who is also a President of Universal Society

H

of Hinduism. In April 2013, Hindus described Selena’s sultry debut performance of ‘Come & Get It’ at MTV Awards ceremony in California wearing bindi as “insensitive”. Zed suggested that as a renowned performer, Selena should get acquainted with the basics of world religions. Zed pointed out that Hollywood needed to understand that Hinduism, with about one billion adherents, was oldest and third largest religion of the world with a rich philosophical thought. Its concepts and symbols had welldefined meanings and purposes and these were not created just for Hollywood’s usage to add dramatic affects as some sanctity and spirituality was attached to these, Zed stated. Hindus welcomed Hollywood and other celebrities to immerse in Hinduism but taking it seriously and respectfully and not just for indecorous showing of Hindu symbols and concepts to advance their selfish agenda. Casual flirting sometimes resulted in pillaging serious spiritual doctrines and revered symbols and hurting the devotees, Zed indicated. If Selena or other entertainers needed any assistance about Hinduism, he or other Hindu scholars would be glad to help, Zed added.

Tai Chi boosts

health among elderly The ancient Chinese exercise regimen consists of slow, gentle, flowing movements that aim to boost muscle power, balance and posture. It also includes breath control IANS, LONDON

O

lder people who regularly practice the traditional Chinese Tai Chi exercise technique are less likely to suffer high blood pressure and were physically stronger, a new study finds. Tai Chi consists of slow, gentle, flowing movements that aim to boost muscle power, balance and posture. It also includes mindfulness, relaxation and breath control. It can also help asthma patients control their condition, the study found. Researchers said the improvement in heart function combined with increased muscular power meant that the martial art should be considered the preferred technique for elderly people to maintain good health, The Telegraph reported. The study involved 65 elderly subjects from Hong Kong, 29 recruited from local Tai Chi clubs who had each practiced the tech-

nique for at least 90 minutes a week for three years, and 36 controls with no such experience. Initial results showed that the Tai Chi subjects were superior in almost all medical observations, including blood pressure, vascular resistance and pulse pressure. Measurements also showed that both large and small artery compliance was 40-44 per cent higher in the Tai Chi group. Additional analysis showed that the Tai Chi subjects had greater average muscle strength. “The improvement in arterial compliance could have resulted from a combination of aerobic training, stretching, mental concentration and calm meditation during Tai Chi movement,” lead researcher William Tsang from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University in Hong Kong, was quoted as saying. Tsang said the added appeal of Tai Chi was that it could be practised any time and anywhere without the constraints of equipment or a gym.

Birth control pills can increase stroke risk! NEW YORK: Popping birth control pills can put you at increased risk for the most common type of stroke, especially if you smoke, have high blood pressure or have a history of migraine headaches, a new study warns. For healthy young women without any stroke risk factors, the risk of stroke associated with oral contraceptives is small. But in women with other stroke risk factors, “the risk seems higher and, in most cases, oral contraceptive use should be discouraged”, said study co-author Marisa McGinley from Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine in the US. Oral contraceptives increase the risk of ischemic strokes, which are caused by blood clots and account for about 85 percent of all strokes. In the general population, oral contraceptives do not appear to increase the risk of hemorrhagic strokes, which are caused by bleeding in the brain. There are about 4.4 ischemic strokes for every 100,000 women of

childbearing age. Birth control pills increase the risk 1.9 times, to 8.5 strokes per 100,000 women, according to the new analysis that combined the results of previous studies. But for women who take birth control pills and also smoke, have high blood pressure or have a history of migraine headaches, the stroke risk is significantly higher.

Hour-long daytime nap ups diabetes risk IANS, LONDON

W

hile taking a short nap may be good for your health, extending it to an hour or more significantly increases risk of developing diabetes, says a new study. “Excessive daytime sleepiness and taking longer naps were associated with increased risk of Type-2 diabetes, with a short nap not increasing this risk,” the study said. The research by Tomohide Yamada from University of Tokyo in Japan analysed studies published till November 2014 on the association between daytime sleepiness, nap, and diabetes. After examining over 600 hundred studies including 261,365 people from Asian and Western countries, the research found that excessive daytime sleepiness increased the risk of diabetes by 56 percent, while a longer daytime nap of 60 minutes or more increased the risk by 46 percent. In contrast, a shorter nap (60 minutes or less per day) did not increase the risk of diabetes. The analysis showed there was no effect of napping up to about 40 minutes per day, after which risk

began to increase sharply. “Daytime napping might be a consequence of night-time sleep disturbance such as obstructive sleep aponea (OSA),” the study noted.

The analysis showed there was no effect of napping up to about 40 minutes per day Several studies have demonstrated the beneficial effects of taking short naps less than 30 minutes in duration, which help to increase alertness

and motor skills. “A short nap finishes before the onset of deep slowwave sleep. Entering deep slow-wave sleep and then failing to complete the normal sleep cycle can result in a phenomenon known as sleep inertia, in which a person feels groggy, disoriented, and even sleepier than before napping,” Yamada said. “Although the mechanisms by which a short nap might decrease the risk of diabetes are still unclear, such duration-dependent differences in the effects of sleep might partly explain our findings,” Yamada noted.
