NEPAL QUAKE TOLL

RISES TO 6,166

Kathmandu, May 1 (IANS) The toll in the massive earthquake that devastated Nepal has risen to 6,166, the Nepalese home ministry said on Friday.

According to Nepal Police, the total number of injured is over 10,000, Kantipur News reported.

As many as 12,064 houses have been reported destroyed.

“This is just the preliminary data. We are still in the process of assessing the loss,” Deputy Inspector General of Police Kamal Singh Bam was quoted as saying.

As many as 117 foreign and Nepali nationals were airlifted to Kathmandu on Thursday from different parts of the country, including Tatopani, Chautara, Lukla, Rumjhatar, Dolakha and Langtang.

The Nepal Army said it has so far treated 748 injured people among which 326 have been discharged.

The army brought 248 injured people from various parts of the country to the capital for treatment on Thursday.

Around 20 helicopters are involved in the ongoing search, rescue and relief operation.

The army teams distributed 11,250 kg relief materials in districts, including at Solukhumbu, Rasuwa, Sindhupalchok, Dhadging.

“When Microsoft released its 3D camera Kinect in 2010, it transformed the video game industry,” said Indian-origin Mohit Gupta, study co-author from the Columbia University.

The most inexpensive 3D camera to date, the Kinect bypassed the need for joysticks and controllers by sensing the user’s gestures, leading to a feeling of total immersion into the game.

But users quickly discovered the Kinect’s limitations. It does not work outdoors and it produces relatively low-quality images, the study said. “In order for a 3D camera to be useful, it has to be something you can use in everyday, normal environments,” said Oliver Cossairt, assistant professor of electrical engineering at the Northwestern University. “Outdoors is a part of that, and that is something the Kinect cannot do, but our Motion Contrast 3-D scanner can,” Cossairt noted.

App to detect sleep apnoea at home WASHINGTON: A team of IndianAmerican researchers from the University of Washington (UW) has developed an app that uses a smartphone to wirelessly test for obstructive sleep apnoea in a person’s bedroom.

Unlike other home sleep aponea tests in use, “ApneaApp” uses inaudible sound waves emanating from the phone’s speakers to track breathing patterns without the need of special equipment or sensors attached to the body.

“ApneaApp” turns a smartphone into an active sonar system that can detect sleep apnoea events. “It is similar to the way bats navigate. They send out sound signals that hit a target and when those signals bounce back, they know something is there,” explained Rajalakshmi Nandakumar, lead author in the UW’s department of computer science and engineering.

“ApneaApp” works efficiently at distances of up to three feet.

Karanam, who was studying at Indiana University, was unaware of what was happening in her head until she underwent a procedure designed to reach deep into the brain to extract the tumor.

‘My world was reduced to rubble’ Medical Engineer Avash K.C., a survivor of the massive quake, recounts the horror when the ground shook underneath and houses came rumbling down IANS, KATHMANDU

T

he main earthquake, which struck Nepal on April 25 morning with a magnitude of 7.9, did the maximum damage in the capital. Within minutes of the ground shaking, several building in the valley had collapsed, leading to a large number of casualties.

Medical Engineer Avash K.C., a survivor of the massive quake, relates his first-hand account to IANS: I was sitting around at my three-storey home talking to my family when the first brutal shock went through our drawing room, throwing things here and there. All of us ran down and out into the open, helping our grandparents along the way.

I saw that the six feet high, meter outer compound wall of our house had collapsed, blocking the road.

With tearful eyes I scanned all around our vicinity. People were running out of their houses into the open. Three other families joined us, but most people were

running down the road to the International Convention Centre about 200 meters away. The centre has a large open area where many of them assembled.

Among the first things I noticed was that even concrete buildings could make a noise when swaying to the effect of an earthquake. Then the screaming started with people running in panic. Fortunately, our building held, and so did dozens of others in our neighborhood.

After the initial shock, we started discussing what to do.

Some of us ran inside quickly to get some bedsheets and some food material because a strong aftershock made it clear that we couldn’t go back to the building.

Later in the evening, I did a quick survey of the surroundings. The night was spent out in the open with very little sleep.

No sound or noise, no honking or movement of traffic. It was as if time had frozen. Except when the tremors hit.

I sat down for a minute, unable to grasp the enormity of the tragedy. How will we ever recover?

Uncertainty looms large on Mount Everest

official said, A home ministry spokesperson told IANS that the National Disaster Management Authority, which has been appointed the nodal agency for coordinating relief and rescue efforts, has sent a team to Nepal to coordinate distribution of relief material.

Almost all climbers and high-altitude guides, including icefall doctors who fix the ladders and ropes

Mountaineering officials said a meeting with the tourism ministry and expedition agencies has been planned to decide on further plans.

Goyal said the affected states had not sought assistance from the central government, though the latter has “assured them of full assistance”. The earthquake, measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale, and its aftershocks have left over 5,000 people dead in Nepal.

Around 9,000 people have been injured in the quake, Nepal Police officials said. “It’s a frightening situation,” a senior official told IANS. According to the ministry for home affairs, army personnel from India, Britain, Germany, Sri Lanka, China, Turkey, the Netherlands, Poland, France, Israel, Japan and Malaysia were engaged in search and rescue operations in various parts of Nepal. At least eight personnel of the Nepalese Army have died, while 28 were injured in accidents during rescue operations.

38 Indian cities quake prone Only a few buildings in India meet the standards of ‘Indian Standards Criteria for Earthquake Resistant Design’ IANS, NEW DELHI

A

t least 38 Indian cities lie in high-risk seismic zones and nearly 60 percent of the subcontinental landmass is vulnerable to earthquakes.

Barring rare exceptions, such as the Delhi Metro, India’s hastily-built cities are open to great damage from earthquakes.

The earthquake that devastated Nepal on saturday and jolted northern India, damaging buildings as far apart as Agra and Siliguri, was expected by geologists, who have warned of more Himalayan earthquakes caused by the growing pressures of the sub-continent grinding into the Asian mainland.

Very few buildings in India meet the standards prescribed in “Indian Standards Criteria for Earthquake Resistant Design” - first published by the Bureau of Indian Standards in 1962, the latest revision being in 2005. These are not enforced, so almost no one knows such earthquake-resistant standards and guidelines for home-owners exist.

The Delhi Metro is one of the few Indian structures built to withstand a quake. Many of the houses built in Bhuj after the Gujarat quake of 2001 are now earthquake-resistant.

What you should do if earthquake strikes

Barring rare exceptions, such as the Delhi Metro, India’s hastily-built cities are open to great damage from earthquakes.

The rare building and high-rise may be designed for quakes.

But nothing has changed since 1993, when a relatively milder earthquake of magnitude 6.4 in Maharashtra’s Latur district killed nearly 10,000 people in what was considered a non-seismic zone.

Most died because shoddily constructed houses collapsed at the first major shake, as they did in Gujarat eight years later.

ndia and Afghanistan have pledged to work together to fight terrorism and also boost bilateral trade and connectivity as Prime Minister Narendra Modi held talks with visiting Afghan President Ashraf Ghani here on April 28. Ghani, whose country continues to battle the Taliban menace after the drawdown of the US-led international forces, spoke out strongly against terrorism.

“Terror must be confronted and must be overcome... we are determined to make Afghanistan the graveyard of terror.”

Ghani, who arrived here on April 27 night on a three-day official visit, pushed for a regional framework of peace and cooperation in order to fight the “disease of terror”.

The joint statement noted that there is no justification for acts of terrorism and both leaders expressed determination to work together, along with the international community, to combat and defeat the scourge of terrorism in all its forms and manifestations.

Modi said that India was ready to walk “shoulder to shoulder” with Afghanistan and also backed Ghani’s vision of making Afghanistan the hub of connectivity in the region.

Modi said India was ready to welcome Afghan trucks at the Attari check post and also join the AfghanPakistan Trade and Transit Agreement. He also pledged to take the Chahbahar Port project in Iran forward. India will expand its development partnership in Afghanistan and also explore new trade and investment opportunities, he added.

Both sides also agreed to work towards a more liberalized business visa regime.

Stressing that India and Afghanistan are “bound by million ties through millennia”, Ghani spoke of the need to boost the potential of SAARC. He said his vision was to recreate his country’s position as a “roundabout” where ideas, people and goods from South and Central Asia came, merged and transited.

CHANDIGARH: A minister in Haryana courted controversy after he said that farmers committing suicide were criminals under the law.

Agriculture Minister O.P. Dhankar told media here on April 28 that the state government could not support farmers who were committing suicide.

He said that the farmers who were committing suicide were running away from their responsibilities and leaving their families and children with liabilities.

Dhankar, who earlier headed the Bharatiya Janata Party Kisan Cell, used to condemn the earlier UPA government for not doing much for farmers which was leading to increasing suicides.

sity in Bihar, from where Tomar claimed to have obtained his law degree told the Delhi High Court on April 27 that his provisional certificate was not “genuine” and the document “does not exist in the university’s record”. The university’s response came on a plea against Tomar, alleging that he had enrolled himself as an advocate based on a “fake and bogus” graduation degree.

Claiming his degree as “genuine”, Tomar said he would not resign.

JD-S leader in the house and former chief minister H.D. Kumaraswamy questioned the government’s intention to split the civic body, whose five-year term is lapsing on April 22 and the Karnataka High Court on March 30 directed the

state Election Commission to hold the civic polls by May 30.

“If the state government wants to split the BBMP, why did it suddenly supersede it on April 18 and delayed holding its election? The government should have respected the governor’s decision to reject the ordinance,” Kumaraswamy said.

Defending the bill, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah recalled that the BJP had advocated dividing the civic body when it was in power from 2008-2013.

“Though the BJP manifesto 2013 promised splitting the BBMP, just as the Congress had, it is opposing the bill only for political gain. Our party is not making this move for the fear of elections,” Siddaramaiah said.

In the 225-member assembly, including one nominated member, the ruling Congress has 122, the BJP 46, the JD-S 40 and remaining are Independents.

CBI finds nothing to prove graft in 35th National Games THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The preliminary probe by the CBI into the allegations levelled over a massive corruption in the conduct of the 35th National Games in Kerala has nothing substantial to prove, a source said.

The source, who did not wish to be identified, told IANS that the probe was based on a complaint filed by CPI-M legislator V. Sivankutty. “We have not been able to find anything to substantiate the allegations for which a CBI probe was sought. Since the Centre has also funded the event, we also looked into that aspect. The final report will be submitted to a court next month,” said the CBI source.

he Chinnaswamy cricket stadium in the heart of this tech hub has introduced modern technology, with photovoltaic cells fixed on its circular rooftop to generate solar power for its use.

“Our stadium is the first in the country to install solar panels on the rooftop above the eastern stands to generate about 1,700 units of power daily to meet a part of our energy requirements,” a Karnataka State Cricket Association official said.

“We have invested `30 million to install the solar cells,” Mrutyunjaya said. The stadium consumes maximum energy for lighting the ground, stands, dressing rooms, pavilion and other facilities when hosting the Indian Premier League (IPL) matches in summer.

ome 2,000 National Guardsmen and more than 1,000 police officers stood guard as a tense Baltimore City, just 60 km from the US capital, slipped under night curfew after two days of riots over the death of a black man in police custody. Presidential candidate and former secretary of state Hillary Clinton described his death as “a tragedy that demands answers”.

Hundreds of defiant protesters refused to leave the streets on April 28 night, and were facing off against gathered police officers after the riots that left more than a dozen buildings damaged, destroyed or looted and at least 20 officers injured.

At least 235 people have been arrested, 34 of them juveniles.

Protesters threw objects at the police when they first advanced on the crowd, and police responded with smoke grenades and flashbangs about half an hour after the curfew went into effect at 10 p.m, according to various media reports.

WASHINGTON: There was no excuse for the kind of violence that occurred in the last few days in Baltimore, the largest city in the US state of Maryland, President Barack Obama said on April 28.

“They're not protesting, they're not making a statement, they're stealing,” Xinhua quoted Obama as saying at a joint press conference with visiting Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. The president was referring to those involved in violence, looting and arson after the funeral held for Night curfew was imposed after riots over the death of a black man in police custody.

The recent violence in Baltimore started hours after the funeral of Freddie Gray, a 25-year-old black man who suffered a serious spine injury while in police custody.

His death on April 19 at a hospital led to several days of mostly peaceful protests.

Maryland Governor Larry Hogan, who had declared a state of emergency on April 27 said: “This combined force will not tolerate vio-

lence or looting, which has led to the destruction of property and put innocent Marylanders at risk.”

Responding to the violence, President Barack Obama said on April 28 that “some police aren't doing the right thing” and that a lot of the tension between law enforcement and the black community stems from “a slow-rolling crisis” that has been brewing for decades.

Fixing it will require more investment in cities, criminal justice reform, better funding for education and soul-searching for some police departments, he said at a White House press conference on April 28 afternoon.

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton tweeted that she is praying for those in the city and Gray's family, adding that his death “is a tragedy that

demands answers.”

Time magazine recently listed 14 major instances of a white cop shooting dead a black person since 17-year-old Trayvon Martin was fatally shot on February 26, 2012 in Sanford, Florida.

According to another media report 154 persons have died at the hands of law enforcement officers since January with 37 killed in April alone.

A final comprehensive nuclear agreement will benefit all sides and will facilitate cooperation between Iran and regional states, Rouhani noted. During his visit to Indonesia, Rouhani will hold bilateral meetings with several heads of state.

akistani security forces have taken control of parts of the Tirah Valley after flushing out terrorists, the Dawn reported on April 29.

According to official sources, the control of Sipah and Akkakhel areas in the valley was the biggest achievement of the security forces so far as part of the ongoing Khyber Two military operation against the Lashkar-iIslam (LI), Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and Jamaatul Ahrar terrorists.

The banned outfits had joined hands soon after the launch of the Khyber Two operation in February.

The control of Sipah and Akkakhel areas in the valley was the biggest achievement.

The forces also advanced towards the TTP-controlled Kukikhel area in the valley.

“The fall of Kukikhel is a matter of time now because the area has been encircled from almost all sides and

militants were seen fleeing the area,” a security official said.

LI spokesman Salahuddin Ayoubi said from an undisclosed location that the loss of Akkakhel and Sipah was a “tactical retreat” and they would soon retake the area with the support of TTP and Jamaatul Ahrar activists. He said the Lashkar killed nine soldiers and injured 11 during ground battles in the Dwa Thoe locality of Kukikhel, but the claim could not be independently verified.

Military observers believe that the army's control of Sipah and Akkakhel was a severe blow to the LI, because the militant organization was controlling the region for the past 10 years.

Narine can’t bowl off-spinners in IPL

BCCI secretary Anurag Thakur hits back at ICC chairman N Srinivasan on bookie issue IANS, MUMBAI

oard of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Anurag Thakur blasted International Cricket Council (ICC) chairman N. Srinivasan on April 27 through a public letter and “requested” him to issue “a list of suspected bookies”.

He also said that Srinivasan should share the list with his own family members “whose involvement in betting has been proved”.

Thakur attacked Srinivasan a day after the ICC issued an advisory to Thakur to avoid meeting sus-

pected bookies.

ICC, in a letter to BCCI chief Jagmohan Dalmiya, said Anurag Thakur was socializing with alleged bookie Karan Gilhotra a couple of days after being elected as BCCI secretary.

Media reports suggested on April 26 that the letter was sent by the ICC after the BCCI intimated the cricket’s world governing body about Thakur socializing with Gilhotra in Chandigarh. Pictures of Anurag socializing with Gilhotra emerged on April 26.

Shebani Kulkarni, president of EQuest Global Group and Luz Canino-Baker, president of Latinas on the Plaza, started the all-day conference with a welcome note and introduction to keynote speaker Gina Amaro-Rudan.

Gina gave a captivating speech that described her journey from going blind to regaining her vision and becoming a bestselling author and Diversity Manager at Google.

She conducted a workshop on identifying and expressing one’s genius and maintaining a healthy life style. Continental breakfast and lunch was served, followed by a Health and Wellness Session by Kathleen Caldwell, Health Coach and president of Caldwell Consulting Group.

She presented an energizing Zumba session and offered tips on nutrition and how to use the power of the female mind to stay

HICAGO IL -- Right before the event, Dada walked in and a devotional fervor gripped the room.

Someone informed him of the day’s program, and pointed to me as a guest.

Dada immediately motioned organizers to bring another chair and have me sit next to him(!); as I headed toward him, he got up from his chair (which is quite an ordeal since it requires the support of multiple people to lift him up) and gently whispered in my ear, “I’m so grateful to have met you.” I was immediately taken by his humility.

At the time, I didn’t know his story. He graduated from college at 17, and completed a masters thesis in Physics. By 19 he had met his spiritual teacher and become a monk.

Until the age of 48, he was in training; and in the subsequent 48 years of his life, he has tirelessly promoted oneness, non-violence and compassion.

Sadhu Vaswani Mission runs schools and social welfare programs, and Dada is particularly known for his insightful talks and for authoring more than a hundred books. His simple messages reach multitudes.

If I had to encapsulate Dada’s personality in one word, it would be humility. He didn’t leak any energy. He held himself as caretaker, servant and trustee of a sacred resource. That constant experience is what seemed to ground his humility.

“Spirituality is not taught. It is caught -- by associating with those who are truly spiritual,” Dada says. I think I know what he means.

OHMKARAM CELEBRATES VISHU IN ST. LOUIS

T LOUIS, MO -- Ohmkaram, a St. Louis-based non-profit, voluntary organization aimed at promoting Kerala Hindu tradition and values, celebrated Vishu, the Malayalee New Year, in a grand manner at the Mahatma Gandhi Center in Ballwin, MO on April 18, attended by more than 100 people.

Observed on the first day of the Medam month (the ninth month in a traditional Malayalee calendar), Vishu is not only the Zodiac New Year, but also a harvest festival.

A cultural program for the evening was preceded by the viewing of Vishukani, a ritual arrangement of auspicious articles intended to signify prosperity, which includes a picture of Lord Krishna, a traditional Keralite lamp, grains, fruits and vegetables, metal mirror and yellow flowers.

Following this, respected elder person M. Krishnan distributed kaineetam (gold coins) to the children of Ohmkaram family members. The cultural program was very well received by the audience as it was a feast for the eyes and ears.

ATAVIANY -- An Ohio driver is facing multiple charges following a threevehicle crash on the New York State Thruway, and it was all caught on camera.

The incident happened at the I-90WB in Batavia, Genesee County.

A video uploaded to YouTube by Tim Linton shows a Camaro nearly side-swipe a pickup truck while trying to pass a tractor trailer. The Camaro driver then tries to pass the pick-up truck on the left shoulder, but ends up hitting the pick-up truck, forcing both vehicles in front of the tractor trailer.

However, no one was hurt.

Camaro driver Kiran Thapa, of Columbus, Ohio, is charged with driving while intoxicated and driving without a license.

Thapa was arraigned and remanded to the Genesee County Jail in lieu of $2,500 cash bail or $5,000 bond.

Student in soup for posting swastika after trip to India

BY A STAFF WRITER ASHINGTON, D.C. – The George Washington University here is contemplating a ban on the swastika, a sacred symbol for Hindus and Buddhists, as authorities say it resembles the Nazi symbol and may hurt the sensibilities of some Jewish students.

The move came after an unidentified student, who is Jewish, returned in March from a trip to India with a swastika image. He placed it briefly on the bulletin board at his predominantly Jewish fraternity’s residence hall.

One fraternity member who saw the swastika on the bulletin board viewed it as a threat and informed the police.

After the student who complained realized the posting of the swastika did not represent a threat, the police closed their investigation.

However, the student who placed the symbol on the bulletin board now faces possible permanent expulsion.

Steven Knapp, president of the university, said in a statement, “While the student claims his act was not an expression of hatred, the university is referring the matter… for review by its hate crimes unit,” Knapp said.

John Banzhaf, a well-known public interest law professor at the u law school, has taken up the cause of the embattled Jewish student.

If the student suffers expulsion or any kind of discipline, the effect will be to ban a sacred religious symbol from the varsity, Banzhaf said.

“Many parents use sitting or carrying devices, not realizing that there are hazards when they do this,” said Erich Batra, Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Centre in the US. The researchers reviewed deaths that were reported to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, of children under two years of age that occurred in sitting and carrying devices between April 2004 and December 2008.

The researchers analysed records for 47 deaths associated with sitting and carrying devices; all but one were attributed to asphyxia (positional or strangulation).

Two-thirds of the cases involved car seats; strangulation from straps accounted for 52 percent of the car seat deaths. The remainder of deaths

occurred in slings, swings, bouncers and strollers.

A

n extra three to four hours of sleep daily over as little as two days has been found to restore memories in fruit flies with Alzheimer’s-like condition.

The findings have implications for humans as according to the researchers brain mechanisms that control sleep in fruit flies are similar to those seen in people.

Studying three groups of flies, the scientists interfered with their ability to remember by disabling a different critical memory gene in each group.

In one group, the disabled gene led the flies to develop a condition

with similarities to Alzheimer’s disease. In another group, the disabled gene made it difficult for fly brain cells to reinforce new connections that encode memories. In the third group, the disrupted gene left the flies with too many of these connections.

“Our data showed that extra sleep can handle any of these problems,” said senior author Paul Shaw, associate professor of neurobiology at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.

“It has to be the right kind of sleep, and we are not sure how to induce this kind of slumber in the human brain yet, but our research

suggests that if we can learn how, it could have significant therapeutic potential,” Shaw pointed out.

As part of the new study, the scientists restored memory in each group of flies by using one of three techniques to increase sleep.

They stimulated a cluster of key brain cells, boosted the production of a protein linked to sleep or gave the flies a drug that mimicked the activity of an important chemical messenger.

Regardless of the technique used to increase sleep, the added slumber — an extra three to four hours of sleep daily over as little as two days — restored the flies’ ability to make memories.
