urkish warplanes on November 24 shot down a Russian SU-24 fighter jet near the Syrian border after it violated Turkish airspace. One of its two pilots was killed and the other was captured, media reports said. According to Turkish authorities, two F-16 warplanes shot down the Russian jet after it failed to heed at least 10 warnings within the rules of engagement, state-run Hurriyet Daily News reported. However, the Russian defense ministry said the downed jet, which was at an altitude of 6,000 meters, did not violate Turkish airspace.

Maggi tests can’t go on: Consumer court NEW DELHI: Following the Rs.640crore class action suit filed by the government against Nestle India, the apex consumer court on November 24 said “unending testing of Maggi samples cannot go on”. A bench of the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC) reserved its order on the decision on the tests. The bench said it would decide later on the fresh tests on 31 samples of Maggi noodles, as requested by the government counsel. Although the court agreed to having the samples, identified by the government counsel, tested, it reserved the order and said the decision would be made later.

NEW DELHI: Former media tycoon Peter Mukerjea, arrested over his involvement in the Sheena Bora murder, was on November 24 brought from Mumbai and then taken to the CBI headquarters in Delhi for further questioning, sources said. Peter was arrested three months after the discovery of Sheena’s remains in a forest near Mumbai. Sources said Peter, who was from Mumbai to Delhi early on November 24 by a special team of the CBI, may undergo a lie detection test at the Central Forensic Science Laboratory. Bihar alliance one-off case

There are far too many divisions among the anti-BJP parties for them to come together. Even the newly found camaraderie between Nitish Kumar and Lalu Yadav is fragile AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI

t will be a mistake to see the congregation of various leaders opposed to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s swearing-in ceremony as the beginning of a ‘mahagathbandhan’ or a grand alliance at the national level. Not only are their bases confined to different parts of the country, their respective provincial egos and ambitions are exacerbated by overt enmity as between the Trinamool Congress and the communists. If any reminder was needed about their lack of commonality apart from their dislike of the BJP, it was Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav’s decision to stay away. On the other hand, the Shiv Sena’s presence underlined the selfcontradictory nature of the gathering. The concept of a mahagathbandhan gained in importance after the success of the experiment in Bihar. But Bihar was a one-time affair. In any case, the idea is no more than a rehash of the united or third fronts which were favored earlier. The difference is that while those groups were directed against the Congress, the target of the latest one is the BJP, which has replaced the tattered Grand Old Party as the numero uno in Indian politics. However, as the back-and-forth statements of Akhilesh Yadav on the subject, and his absenteeism in

Patna, show, there isn’t much chance of such an alliance taking shape in his state prior to the 2017 elections. Even if similar alliances are set up in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu, which go to the polls next year, they will be too rickety to replicate the Bihar experiment against the powerful regional leaders of the two states. Besides, the BJP is of hardly any importance in these states. It’s different in Assam, but there isn’t much chance of an anti-BJP alliance unless the Congress, in its desperation over losing sitting legis-

lators to the BJP, teams up with perfume baron Badruddin Ajmal of the United Democratic Front. What such speculation indicates is that there are far too many divisions among the anti-BJP parties for them to come together. Bihar was an exception because the two former foes, and current friends, Nitish Kumar and Lalu Prasad, demonstrated remarkable maturity to forge the unity of their parties, the Janata Dal-United and the Rashtriya Janata Dal. Few would have thought it possible and, even today, it is

believed that their camaraderie is too fragile to last. Arguably, it is some kind of a message which the two leaders received from the ground level, combined with their intense political antipathy towards Narendra Modi, which cemented their alliance. In Uttar Pradesh, however, the fact that Mulayam Singh Yadav is far less antagonistic towards Modi has long been evident. After walking out of the Janata Dal (United)-RJDCongress alliance in Bihar, which

also spelt doom for the proposed Janata parivar, Mulayam Singh predicted the BJP’s victory in the state. Moreover, Mayawati is unlikely to have any interest in reviving the alliance since she believes that she has a fair chance of returning to power on her own. However, the BJP will look with some satisfaction at the motley nature of the gathering in Patna. The mere presence of several chief ministers, a former prime minister and a prime minister wannabe do not make a gathbandhan.

Global terror toll surged nine-fold in 15 years CHAITANYA MALLAPUR, NEW DELHI

here has been a nine-fold increase in deaths due to terrorism globally, rising from 3,329 in 2000 to 32,685 in 2014, according to the Global Terrorism Index 2015 report by the Institute for Economics and Peace, a think-tank based in Sydney. The global economic cost of terrorism was $283 billion over the past 15 years, reaching a record high of $53 billion in 2014. The prime targets of terrorist attacks have been citizens and private property. Deaths of private citizens increased 172 percent in 2014 over the previous year. Nigeria-based Boko Haram and the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) accounted for 51 percent of total deaths attributed to terrorist groups in 2014. Boko Haram has emerged as the deadliest terror out-

fit in 2014, killing over 6,664 people, an increase of 317 percent over the previous year. Boko Haram pledged its allegiance to ISIS, renaming itself as Islamic State’s West Africa Province in March 2015.

Another terrorist group, Fulani militants, has emerged in Nigeria that killed 1,229 people in 2014. The top five terrorist groups were responsible for 74 percent of all terrorist-related deaths. The ISIS claimed 6,073 deaths

in 2014, the most after Boko Haram. The Global Terrorism report highlights that ISIS inflicts more deaths on the battlefield (20,000) than through terrorism (6,073) attributed to the group. Baghdad (43) has the highest fatality rate per 100,000, followed by Maiuguri (39), Mosul (29), Peshawar (25) and Donetsk (10). The French capital of Paris saw a series of terrorist attacks on November 13, killing 129 people and leaving over 300 injured, the worst violence in France post World War-II. ISIS, also known as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), has claimed responsibility for the Paris attack. The attacks in Paris were carried out by eight terrorists, of whom seven killed themselves in suicide bombings. As many as 705 bombing attacks by ISIS were reported in 2014. As

many as 117 instances were of suicide bombings, resulting in 1,101 deaths with an average of nine people killed per attack. Almost 78 percent killed in terror incidents are from five countries: Iraq, Nigeria, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Syria. These five countries also account for 57 percent of all terror attacks in 2014, while Iraq and Nigeria alone account for 53 percent of all deaths. Deaths due to extremist incidents increased by 80 percent in 2014 over the previous year. These top ten countries accounted for 88 percent of all deaths in 2014. Iraq tops (10) the index, heading a list of 162 nations. The country is one of the worst affected by terrorism, reporting 9,929 deaths in 2014, an increase of 55 percent over 2013. Iraq also accounted for 30 percent of all deaths in 2014.

Indian laborers’ arrival in South Africa commemorated JOHANNESBURG: A South African organization working for indentured Indian-origin laborers commemorated the 155th anniversary of their arrival in the country, a media report said on Thursday. The 1860 Indentured Laborers’ Foundation on Sunday performed a play at a Civic Centre in Verulam town of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) province and launched a brochure about work that foundation has done to educate people on the history and heritage of indentured laborers of Indian-origin. Anand Jayrajh, chairman of the foundation, said the history of indentured laborers should always be on the radar as far as community awareness is concerned, News 24 reported. “We are all aware of the fact that these indentured laborers worked in almost slave-like conditions and faced a lot of hardships,” Jayrajh said. “Despite all these difficulties, with diligence and hard work they were able to overcome almost unsurmountable odds to make the lives of their dependents much more comfortable than what they enjoyed,” he added. Indentured Labor was a system of bonded Labor that was instituted following the abolition of slavery. Indentured laborers were recruited to work in British colonies in the West Indies, Africa and South East Asia. The foundation works for upholding and preserving the history and heritage of the indentured laborers of Indian origin who were brought to the Colony of Natal — a British colony in southeastern Africa founded in 1843 during 1860-1911. The majority of Indian indentured workers brought to develop the sugar industry. In 1911, India prohibited the indentured labor to Natal because of the ill treatment of its citizens.

Raymond Lopez (15th) is helping distribute three tons of free turkeys to residents in the ward at 2 pm at 1650 W. 63rd St. He said he was notified by the company that the front door, which is made of glass, was completely shattered. Someone threw a piece of concrete through the main door of the building. There was also damage to the walls and desks inside the office. He estimated there was at least $1,000 in damages, but nothing was stolen. “I was shocked,” Lopez said. “Thankfully, it was just vandalism. I’m very proud of the community. Similar celebrations took place at BAPS centers across the globe. On November 4, BAPS also co-hosted the Diwali in DC at the Jefferson Hall in the Library of Congress. Over 1,200 prominent Indian Americans and their Congressional representatives from across the United States attended the event hosted by the Congressional Caucus on India and Indian Americans. The Diwali celebration continued till November 15 with a special cultural program, followed by a grand fireworks show with music, videos, and traditional dances. Lake St. Roselle, Chicago, IL on November 20. The event was attended by a large number of eminent people belonging to different elite sections of society. Sonia Shah, an exceptionally bright 17 year old young girl, born and raised in the US and Europe, went to build a stateof-the-art girls’ school in order to offer free education to poor girls in the village of Kangra Pakhtoonkwa Pakistan, where only 3 out of 10 girls ever go to school. The amazing lineup of eminent dignitaries, who graced the evening, made a fervent appeal to people to sponsor girls’ education in Sonia Shah Memorial School. Yohannes Abraham, special assistant to the President and Chief of Staff for

the Office of Public Engagement and the Office of Intergovernmental Affairs, in his keynote address, said that Sonia Shah was the youngest intern in the President’s Campaign of 2012. Abraham read out the message of Michelle Obama, the First Lady of the US, who conveyed her greetings to those gathered to celebrate the Sonia Shah Organization and encouraged young people to take charge of their future through education. Iram Shah announced Sonia Shah Scholarship program for talented girls aspiring to go to college or higher education. She said that she came to US over 20 years ago for higher education which changed her life and lives of others around her. The scholarship will be a gift that will keep giving. The Vagabonds of the Runaway Circus, a local circus entertainment company, presented a customized and unique performance piece, exclusively for the Sonia Shah Organization, in order to pay tribute to this evening’s key components: Hope, Celebration, and Dedication. Girl in infanticide case ‘had strict parents’ BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- Mubashra Uddin met her first boyfriend, a fellow student at Uplift Community High School in Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood, not long after she turned 13, according to family and friends. But in the strict Muslim home where Uddin was raised, even speaking to boys ----particularly African-American ones--was forbidden. When her Pakistan-born parents found out about her boyfriend, they pulled her out of the high school and home-schooled her for her last two years. Uddin, now a 19-year-old student at DeVry University, found out she was pregnant in February but told only her boyfriend and one other friend, Cook County prosecutors and her attorney said. Her friends, teachers and relatives are now wondering how the sweet, intelligent, sometimes timid teen could end up charged with first-degree murder, accused of holding her newborn daughter out of her bedroom window and dropping her eight stories to her death. The newborn suffered mortal injuries, including a fractured spine and skull, broken ribs and a lacerated aorta and liver, prosecutors said. “The act of dropping a newborn out of an eighth-story window to its eventual death is exceedingly evil, exceedingly cruel,” Judge James Brown said as he ordered Uddin held without bail.

Many unanswered questions remain about the baby’s death, including how no one in the small three-bedroom apartment-including an 11-year-old sister who normally shared a bed with Uddin--heard the young woman giving birth on November 11. Prosecutors have said that Uddin did not tell her family she was pregnant because she knew her Muslim parents would not approve. Prosecutor Patrick Turnock said that shortly after giving birth to a 7-pound, 12-ounce baby girl in her bedroom, Uddin heard her mother walking toward her room and dropped the baby out of the window. The police began canvassing the apartment building after a witness found the baby--still alive--wrapped her in his shirt and two blankets he retrieved from his home and called 911. The girl was taken to Weiss Memorial Hospital, where she died early last week from her massive injuries. Investigators learned that Uddin might have been pregnant and that her apartment was directly above the grassy area in the 800 block of West Eastwood Avenue where the baby was found.

Indian pleads guilty to sexcapade with minor

BY A STAFF WRITER OLUMBIA, MD -- A Maryland man of Indian origin pled guilty to traveling across state lines for sex with a minor. Ravi Singit, 41, of Rockville, Maryland, was caught in a sting operation conducted by the FBI’s Child Exploitation Task Force. He pled guilty on November 23 in the US District Court for the District of Columbia. He is to be sentenced on February 11 by Senior Judge John D. Bates. Singit faces a statutory maximum of 30 years in prison and a potential fine of up to $250,000. He also will be required to register as a sex offender for a minimum of 15 years upon his release from prison. According to government evidence, on August 26, Singit contacted an undercover officer with the FBI’s Child Exploitation Task Force, who had posted an ad on a social network site. Over the next several days, Singit exchanged e-mail, phone, and text messages with the undercover officer, whom the defendant believed had access to an underage girl. During this time, Singit arranged with the undercover officer to meet with a view to having sex with a child. On August 31, Singit traveled from Maryland to a pre-arranged meeting place in Washington, D.C. He was arrested when he arrived at the destination.

This was followed by a live musical performance by Panorama Musical Orchestra from India. Extraordinary vocal and instrumental talents of this musical group captured and thoroughly entertained the audience for over three hours with golden oldies and new Hindi movie songs. Couple pleads guilty to healthcare fraud

BY A STAFF WRITER OCKAWARY, NJ -- A New Jersey-based Indian-American couple owning a mobile diagnostic testing company received more than $4.3 million from Medicare and private insurance companies over the past several years by providing fake patients’ medical diagnostic testing reports, and used the money for personal expenses. The couple, Nita and Kirtish Patel from Rockaway, Morris County, pleaded guilty before US District Judge William H. Walls in Newark federal court on November 17. New Jersey U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman said that the couple owning and operating Biosound Medical Services Inc. and Heart Solutions of Parsippany provided diagnostic testing reports that were never interpreted by a licensed physician. The fraudulent practice by the couple, both of them 53, had been going on since 2006. They were each charged with one count of healthcare fraud. According to the documents filed in the case and statements made in court, from 2006 through June 2014, Nita and Kirtish ran their laboratory providing mobile diagnostic testing, including ultrasounds, echocardiograms and nerve conduction studies that were used to

Drug-resistant TB patient treated successfully

Dr Sanjay Jain BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK -- A team of specialists at Johns Hopkins Children’s Center, including an Indian American, has successfully treated a child with a highly virulent form of tuberculosis known as XDR TB, or extensively drug-resistant TB. The case provides the first detailed account of a young child in the US diagnosed and treated for XDR TB, according to the researchers. “We are thrilled that our patient is doing so well,” said TB expert Sanjay Jain. Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacterium responsible for TB, is estimated to cause almost ten million new cases of TB disease worldwide each year, with strains impervious to drug therapies rapidly spreading. The child was brought to The Johns Hopkins Hospital for evaluation of unrelenting fever and malaise upon her return from India, where she and a sibling spent three months. An account of the case was described in

Biosound technicians would travel to the office of a primary care physician in the New York and New Jersey area to conduct diagnostic testing. Biosound was responsible for sending the tests to a “reading physician”— an appropriate specialist who would interpret the results. After the reading physician prepared a report, Biosound was responsible for providing it to the referring physicians. Biosound was paid millions of dollars by Medicare and other payers for the

diagnostic testing, the reading physician’s interpretation of the results and the reports. Kirtish Patel admitted to fraudulently interpreting and writing diagnostic reports produced by Biosound despite having no medical license and knowing that the reports would be used by the referring physicians to make important patient treatment decisions. Nita admitted assisting her husband in forging physician signatures on the “fraudulently produced reports” to make them appear legitimate. The duo also admitted falsely representing to Medicare that the neurological testing performed by Biosound was being supervised by a licensed neurologist. According to the information, more than half of the diagnostic reports generated by Biosound between October 2008 and June 2014 were never actually reviewed or interpreted by a physician. The couple was paid more than $4,386,133.75 by Medicare and private insurance companies for the fraudulent reports, which they used for personal expenses, including multiple residences and luxury vehicles. The health care fraud charge to which Nita and Kirtish pleaded guilty carries a maximum potential penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine, or twice the gross gain or loss from the offense.

BY A STAFF WRITER DISON, NJ -- Nineteen people have been arrested on money laundering and prostitution charges after cops broke up a ring of massage parlors. Six massage parlors where people were engaged in prostitution or money laundering were closed in raids last week, according to the Middlesex County prosecutor’s office. The parlors and their operators funnelled illicit funds through the payment of expenses, including, for one suspect, $150,000 in illegal cash. Bail was set at $60,000 for those charged with second-degree offenses; others had $20,000 bail or were released on their own recognizance.

Postal worker ‘harasses’ two Muslim women BY A STAFF WRITER ROOKLYN, NY -- Two Muslim sisters have made some disturbing allegations against a US Postal worker in Brooklyn. The man in the post office uniform came frighteningly close to the two Muslim women, one of whom was with her baby. He appeared to be yelling at them, but it got even worse. “The man with a postal uniform approached them, harassed them and even spat on them,” said Sadyuia Khalique, of CAIR. The women are so frightened; they step into a deli for safety. But the man in the postal service uniform followed them in. “Telling them ‘I’m going to bomb your temple,’ and when he followed them inside the Yemeni grocery store after the customers there pushed him out, he told them, ‘I’m waiting outside, come so I can attack you,’” Khalique said. “He makes a lot of noise all the time,” said Jamaal Abdulla, a resident. Abdulla knows the postman who delivers

mail in the neighborhood. He says the postal worker often buys beer during the day and yells obscenities. He says the women were terrified. “The lady was shaking when she came in

Major security lapse at NY’s JFK airport BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK -- In a major fiasco, officials at the JFK Airport in New York City let 150 passengers arriving from an international flight, from Cancun, Mexico, leave the airport without going through customs. American Airlines Flight 1671 arrived at JFK from Cancun, Mexico, at 8:50 pm on November 20. When the plane landed, passengers walked out of the airport without having their passports or bags checked by Customs and Border Protection. A source familiar with the matter said passengers disembarking the plane “just followed” a gate agent. The security snafu came just two days after ISIS released a video threatening New York City with a terrorist attack

.“Some passengers on Flight 1671 did not complete immigration and customs process upon arrival when they were inadvertently directed to the domestic terminal,” American Airlines said in a statement. American Airlines contacted the passengers and directed them to return to JFK for customs processing. According to an official, 144 passengers had returned to the airport and gone through customs. The six that remain are all US citizens. American Airlines is working with Customs and Border Protection to ensure they “complete the process and to prevent this from happening in the future,” the company also said in the statement. “None of us went through immigration or customs,” said a passenger, adding, “There were

no signs for customs or anything. The only signs we saw were baggage claim and exit. “The passenger complained on November 21 that agents have “been harassing me with phone calls — they’re coming from high-up people at American Airlines, (Transportation Security Administration) and customs . . . . They’re very aggressive.” Another passenger also said that agents had been reaching out constantly.“They’re telling me that I am here illegally, that I’m trespassing!” the passenger said. “They said, ‘If you don’t come in, we’re sending FBI agents to your house.’ ” A spokesman for the US Customs and Border Protection, part of the Department of Homeland Security, said the agency was “aware of and looking into the incident and is working with our counterparts to resolve it.”

he next time a hangover hits you hard the morning after a late-night party, look in the mirror to see if your hair is turning white or your hairline is receding. Yes, age is a major factor in the way drinking affects you. Worsening impact of hangovers are a reminder that drinking in moderation would be a better idea, say health experts. “The capacity of our liver to cope with alcohol reduces with age. The alcohol metabolizing enzyme reduces and the body fat increases reducing muscle mass, thus increasing the effect of alcohol,Â” Dr Rahul Tambe, general physician from Nanavati Super Specialty Hospital in Mumbai told IANS in an email. “Elderly people are often on multiple medication which interferes with alcohol metabolism. Losing weight causes reduced distribution of alcohol in body causing greater intoxication and hangover,” he

added. According to Dr Yogesh Batra, senior consultant (gastroenterology) at BLK Super Specialty Hospital in New Delhi, with age, there is an accumulation of substances like acetaldehyde in the liver which are the by-products of alcohol metabolism and are one of the “incriminating agents” responsible for hangovers. “There is brain degeneration with age and the toxic products tend to hit the brain harder. There is a tendency towards dehydration as the aging population tends to drink less water which leads to hangovers,” Dr Batra said. Hangover or veisalgia is usually experienced after an alcoholic over-indulgence. The symptoms experienced range from a simple headache to severe nausea, vomiting, giddiness, fatigue and sweating. In some people, it can even lead to anxiety or panic attacks. Severity of hangover depends on amount of alcohol intake, frequency of heavy drinking and food intake.

o you want to better remember new names and faces? Go, hit the sack. According to researchers, people are better at remembering faces and names if they get eight-hour sound sleep after seeing those faces and names for the first time. Many different kinds of memories are improved with sleep. While a couple of studies have looked at how naps might affect our ability to learn new faces and names, no previous studies have looked at the impact of a full night of sleep in between learning and being tested. “We found that when participants were given the opportunity to have a full night’s sleep, their ability to correctly identify the name associated with a face - and their confidence in their answers - significantly improved,” explained Jeanne F Duffy from Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH). Participants in the study were shown 20 photos of faces with corresponding names from a database

of over 600 color photos of adult faces and asked to memorize them. After a 12-hour period, they were then shown the photos again with either a correct or incorrect name. In addition to answering whether or not the correct name was shown, participants were asked to rate their confidence on a scale of one to nine. When given an opportunity to sleep for up to eight hours, participants correctly matched 12 percent more of the faces and names.

The findings suggest that sleep after new learning activities may help improve memory. “Sleep is important for learning new information. As people get older, they are more likely to develop sleep disruptions and sleep disorders, which may, in turn, cause memory issues,” Duffy noted. “By addressing issues with sleep, we may be able to affect people’s ability to learn things at all different ages,” the authors concluded.

Loneliness is deadly for elderly NEW YORK: For older adults, perceived social isolation is a major health risk that can increase the chances of premature death by 14 percent. The researchers found that loneliness leads to fight-or-flight stress signalling, which can ultimately affect the production of white blood cells. Essentially, lonely people had a less effective immune response and more inflammation than non-lonely people, researchers from the University of Chicago and UCLA. The team examined gene expression in leukocytes, cells of the immune system that are involved in protecting the body against bacteria and viruses. As expected, the leukocytes of lonely humans and macaques showed an increased expression of genes involved in inflammation and a decreased expression of genes involved in antiviral responses. “Leukocyte gene expression and loneliness appear to have a reciprocal relationship, suggesting that each can help propagate the other over time,” the researchers noted. These

results were specific to loneliness and could not be explained by depression, stress or social support. “The ‘danger signals’ activated in the brain by loneliness ultimately affect the production of white blood cells. The resulting shift in monocyte output may both propagate loneliness and contribute to its associated health risks,” the researchers said.
