urkish warplanes on November 24 shot down a Russian SU-24 fighter jet near the Syrian border after it violated Turkish airspace. One of its two pilots was killed and the other was captured, media reports said. According to Turkish authorities, two F-16 warplanes shot down the Russian jet after it failed to heed at least 10 warnings within the rules of engagement, state-run Hurriyet Daily News reported. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said everyone must respect
Turkey’s right to protect its borders. “Turkey holds no grudges toward its neighboring countries. Undoubtedly, we did our best to prevent the recent incident,” Xinhua quoted Erdogan as saying on November 24 in Ankara. He explained that Turkish F-16 jets “intercepted an unidentified warplane according to globally acknowledged rules of engagement.” The Rusian defense ministry refuted the claim that the fighter violate the Turkish airspace. The jet crashed into tents in Latakia’s Yamadi village near the Syrian border where Turkmens are currently staying, according to Turk-
men sources. Its two pilots were seen landing with the aid of parachutes, witnesses said. One of the pilots was killed and the other was captured by Turkmen forces in the region. Video footage showed the plane crashing into mountains in Latakia province. The Turkish General Staff released the radar trace analysis of the Russian jet. It shows the plane entered the Turkish airspace over the southern province of Hatay while circling over northern Syria. However, the Russian defense ministry said the downed jet, which was at an altitude of 6,000 meters, did not violate Turkish airspace.
MOSCOW: Russian President Vladimir Putin on November 24 said the Russian Su-24 warplane, which was attacked one km away from the x Syrian border with Turkey and crashed four km away, had not vio>>airspace. PAGE 16 lated Turkey’s “When attacked in the air, the plane was flying at an altitude of 6,000 meters, one kilometer away from the Turkish territory,” Putin said as he met King Abdullah II of Jordan in Russia’s Sochi, Xinhua reported. He said the plane was shot down by an air-to-air missile launched by a Turkish F-16 jet in Syrian airspace and the Su-24 fell in Syria four km away from the Turkish border. “The Russian pilots and the warplane have in no way threatened Turkey. This is obvious,” Putin said,
describing the incident as “a the back”. Putin said the incident wo have serious consequences Moscow-Ankara relations as sia would not tolerate crime what happened today”. “We have always regarde not only as a close neighbo also a friendly state. I don’t who needed today’s inciden pen, but Russia didn’t need case,” said Putin. The president promised t fully analyse everything that happened, criticizing Ankara contacting NATO instead of lishing necessary communic with Russia immediately. “As if it were us shooting Turkish plane and not vice v said Putin.
The ministry stressed that “throughout its flight, the aircraft remained exclusively above Syrian territory,” BBC reported. “Objective monitoring data shows it,” the ministry added. Turkey is a member of the NATO military alliance, which views an attack on one member as an attack
on all. A NATO official on November 24 that th was monitoring the event “We are in contact wit authorities and will have see how it develops,” th said. Turkey has warned a lations of its airspace by R Syrian aircraft.
