n a move that will empower Indian researchers and help them connect with rest of the world, the University of Chicago (UC) and two other American universities will help Indian universities ramp up their computing ability to fulfill the scientists’ dream of sharing data with the international fraternity. The connectivity will be via high-speed ‘cloud’ computing clusters and superfast internet. Rob Gardner, a UC researcher, has been working with scientists at Tata Institute of Fundamental
Research (TIFR) and Delhi University (DU) to connect central processing units (CPUs) at their campuses so that underused processors at remote campuses can be used by researchers in several countries. “The main idea is to provide a cloud-based service which connect together computing and research resources at various institutions — making it easy to share data and CPU cycles for the user while not requiring specialized knowledge from local system administrators,” Gardner told IANS. The UC has opened a center in Delhi and the
faculty steering committee has proposed starting a collaboration in computing — beginning with common experiences in the US and India in ‘building and operating the distributed computing infrastructure for the LHC project at CERN’. Prof Amitabha Mukherjee of DU’s department of physics and astrophysics says, “Our department is the biggest single group using high productivity computing systems (HPCS). Collaborating with others using such HPCSs enhances our user base of computing resources.”

Transgenders ‘third’ category: SC Activists term the verdict ‘revolutionary, say social acceptance will take longer because of the stigma IANS, NEW DELHI/KOLKATA
T
ransgenders should be treated as a third category and as a socially and economically backward class entitled to job reservation, the Supreme Court ruled this week. Activists termed the verdict “revolutionary” but said social acceptance will take longer because of the stigma associated with them. Recognizing transgenders as a third gender, the apex court bench of Justice K.S. Radhakrishnan and Justice A.K. Sikri directed the central and state governments to include them for reservation in jobs and education. The court also said both the union and state governments would frame welfare schemes for them. Transgenders were elated at the judgment. “The judgment is good in terms of recognizing us as the third gender, but the discrimination will continue (in society),” Shaila Jaan, a transgender, told IANS. “Things will only change if the

Filmmaker and gay activist Onir also welcomed the judgment. “This judgment also means hope to the LGBT community and we are hopeful to win that battle too,” Onir, who has directed movies like “I Am” and “My Brother Nikhil”, told IANS. In Kerala, human right activists termed the court verdict as “historic and revolutionary”. “We have seen and heard about the ill-treatment meted out to transgenders because of the convention of human beings classified as male or female. They were treated as social outcasts. elivering his keynote lecture to mark the CBI’s 50-year celebrations, former West Bengal governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi, who was the guest speaker, rebuked the agency for being the government’s alleged ‘department of dirty tricks’ instead of being honesty’s ally. Warning against the menace of corporate greed and black money as a parallel economy, Gandhi also described business group Reliance as an alleged parallel state. “The CBI has a very mixed image. Not all of it is flattering. It is seen as government’s hatchet, rather than honesty’s ally. It is often called DDT— meaning not dichlorodiphenyl-trichloroethane, the colourless, tasteless, odourless insec-
ticide it should be, but the department of dirty tricks,” Gandhi said at the 15th DP Kohli Memorial Lecture titled “Eclipse at Noon: Shadows over India’s Conscience”. “This perception, howsoever, valid it might be, must change,” said grandson of Mahatma Gandhi.

owing to clean Indian politics within five years, if voted to power, BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi this week said that he would put all politicians with criminal backgrounds behind bars without any discrimination. “There is a lot of discussion these days on how to stop criminals from entering politics. I have a cure and I have vowed to clean Indian politics... all I need is people’s support,” said
Modi in the second round of 3D rallies, addressing around 100 locations in 15 states. Modi said that he would set up special courts under the observation of Supreme Court and all the councilors, MLAs, MPs will go through a screening process and those with criminal backgrounds will be prosecuted in a time-bound manner. Taking on the Congress, Modi accused the party of humiliating BR Ambedkar, architect of India’s Constitution, and accused party vice president of taking all the credit for the work done by Ambedkar. Rape heinous crime but against blanket death penalty, Mulayam IANS, NEW DELHI
A
mid a controversy over his remarks opposing death penalty for rape, Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav has told the National Commission for Women (NCW) that he holds rape to be a heinous crime deserving stern punishment
but believed that capital punishment should be used only in the rarest of rare cases. Replying to a notice sent by the NCW, Mulayam Singh said he has the highest regard for women and has actively taken a number of initiatives for their upliftment. The NCW had sent him the notice based on media reports on
his remarks. The Samajwadi Party chief said last Thursday that death penalty
in rape cases was “unfair” as boys make “mistakes”. The former Uttar Pradesh chief minister had also said that if his party leads the government at the centre, he would change the law. The NCW said that in his reply to the notice, Mulayam Singh said: “The offense of rape is a serious and heinous crime and the perpetrators of such crimes deserve to be dealt with sternly and swiftly.”
Kiran Bedi to be Delhi CM candidate?
Kiran Bedi NEW DELHI: A tweet by former BJP chief and party-in-charge of Delhi Nitin Gadkari saying “Dilli chunav ke liye BJP taiyyar, Kejriwal ke mukable Kiran Bedi hongi CM candidate (BJP ready for Delhi polls, Kiran Bedi will be CM candidate against Kejriwal)” caused a flutter in party circles on April 15, with leaders and spokespersons distancing themselves from the comment. With Lok Sabha elections in full swing, and the Delhi assembly polls not too far away, Gadkari’s tweet that Bedi would be the party’s chief ministerial candidate could cause major trouble for the already factionridden state unit in Delhi. While Gadkari could not be contacted, some in BJP said his Twitter account had been hacked and there was some mischief behind the post. The Delhi BJP unit has not been able to overcome its factional fights between groups owing allegiance to Harsh Vardhan and Vijay Goel. This even led to the party naming its Delhi Lok Sabha contestants at the last moment.

T
he BJP and its allies are projected to bag 275 Lok Sabha seats, three more than needed to form the government, while the Congress and its partners are set to win just 111 seats, according to a new poll survey released this week. Dressed in a veshti and shirt,BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi waves to supporters at an election rally in Chennai.
The BJP alone is set to win 226 seats, the party’s strongest performance ever and a dramatic improvement from the two it won in 1984. The Congress, which has ruled the country for the past 10 years, has never dipped below 100 seats, but the poll by NDTVHansa Research projects that it will win only 92 seats. Even with its allies, the Congress is projected to bag 111 seats, three short of its worst solo performance of 114 seats in 1999. The survey showed the BJP had benefited from canny last-minute

Uttar Pradesh that the latest poll shows it winning. Till now, the BJP had been projected as heading towards being the single largest party but with its alliance falling short of the majority mark. If the alliance does not reach 272 seats, it will have to seek more partners from among regional players like J. Jayalalithaa, who is
expected several seats in Tamil Nadu, or Mamata Banerjee, who is projected to get a majority of the 42 seats in West Bengal. Four phases of the Lok Sabha polls have been completed so far and there is a month and five phases of balloting still to go before votes are counted on May 16.

T
he BJP will ruin the essence of “Bharatiyata” and “Hindustaniyat”, Congress president Sonia Gandhi said on April 14, urging people to “chose the right path”. In a video message posted on the Congress website, Gandhi said India was at a “crossroads” in this election. “What are these values that are the very heart and soul of our motherland? They are love and respect, harmony and brotherhood. In a word, non-violence,” Gandhi said in the message in Hindi, which had a translated English text posted along. “Living with these feelings for each other across religions, castes, communities, regions, languages is
what makes us one strong nation. These have been the bedrock of our progress. These are the essence of our Bharatiyata, our Hindustaniyat,” she said. “Without naming him, Gandhi took a dig at Bharatiya Janata Party’s
prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi. “It is this, the very heart and soul of India, that we are fighting to protect in this election, from those who seek to change it, and to divide us. We want unity.”

’s true. People of this Pakistan want Narendra Modi to become prime minister of India. More than 250 residents, including over 100 voters of a village called “Pakistan” in Bihar’s Purnea district, are set to vote for the BJP to help Modi to fulfil his dream. “We want Narendra Modi to become PM,” said Hira Hembrum, a middle aged villager. Hembrum’s view was supported by most of the villagers who are living in abject poverty and without basic amenities. Pakistan is the name of a village in Singhiya panchayat,
Srinagar block, about 30 km from Purnea town, the district headquarters. “People in Pakistan are keen to vote for BJP to see Modi as PM,”
Over 100 voters of a village called Pakistan in Bihar’s Purnea district, are set to vote for BJP Haldu Murmu, another villager of Pakistan in Purnea, about 350 km from the state capital,” was quoted as saying in local media.
What is interesting is that there is not one Muslim family in the village, which comprises mostly Santhal tribal households. There also is not one mosque in this Pakistan. Murmu said they want to vote Modi to counter neighboring country Pakistan’s bid to disrupt peace. “Only Modi can do it,” he said. Purnea goes to polls April 24. According to a police official, government documents record the name of the village as Pakistan. So how did the village get its name? Elders in the village recall that the village was named soon after India’s partition in 1947.

n a book that has sent ripples across the political establishment for its timing, Sanjaya Baru, media adviser to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in his first term, has said that Congress President Sonia Gandhi slowly chipped away at the authority of the Prime Minister’s Office, created a parallel power structure and left a weakened prime minister who “allowed himself to become an object of such ridicule in his second term in office”. After this revelation, the BJP called Manmohan Singh the “weakest prime minister ever”, and asked him to introspect how his tenure “impacted on the institution”. Commenting on the book The Accidental Prime Minister: The Making and Unmaking of Manmohan Singh by the prime minister’s former advisor Sanjay Baru, veteran
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader L.K. Advani said the book endorsed what everyone knew — that Manmohan Singh was the weakest prime minister. “The book has officially endorsed what everyone knew... When I said I feel he (Manmohan Singh) is the weakest prime minister ever, my colleagues said he is a nice man, why do you criticize him so much,” Advani said. Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley said Manmohan Singh must seriously introspect as to how his tenure has impacted the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) as an institution. “Manmohan Singh must seriously introspect as to how his tenure impacted on the institution of prime minister. Did he have the last word on all subjects? Or is it the system of the original Communist states that was operating, where the party general secretary was always more important than the head of
the government,” Jaitley wrote in his blog. “Prime ministers are known not by the number of years they have spent in office, but by the footprints they leave behind,” the BJP leader said. BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad said the situation in the Congress was stuck between an “accidental prime minister” and party vice president Rahul Gandhi, who “did not even want to be a prime ministerial candidate”. Narendra Modi, BJP prime ministerial candidate, said that PM Manmohan Singh’s daughter’s reaction to a book which questioned her father’s authority as the head of the government proves that the contents of the book are true. “If the PM’s daughter is saying that it was betrayal, then it means that the prime minister’s family believes that the contents of the book are true,” Modi said in his rally in Bhagalpur.
Varun has betrayed Gandhi family: Priyanka Arvind Kejriwal begins IANS, AMETHI (UTTAR PRADESH)
Won’t cross Lakshman Rekha: Varun
P
riyanka Gandhi Vadra on April 15 slammed estranged cousin Varun Gandhi for the second time in three days, criticizing him for siding with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and “betraying the family”. Talking to reporters in Amethi, Priyanka accused the candidate from Sultanpur Lok Sabha constituency of “betraying the family”. Her remarks came hours after Varun Gandhi gave a warning that his silence should not be construed as weakness. Varun, son of late Sanjay Gandhi, pointed out at a rally that he had never crossed the “Lakshman Rekha” of decency. Priyanka, however, said the two were not engaged in a “family tea party” but were in the middle of an “ideological war”. A visibly upset Priyanka, daughter of Congress president Sonia Gandhi and late former prime minister Rajiv
Priyanka Gandhi
Gandhi, said she would not have even forgiven her children for being with a group that is out to destroy the country’s social and secular fabric. “My father laid down his life for the unity of this country. How can I take all this silently?” she said when asked about her remarks against her cousin.
SULTANPUR (UTTAR PRADESH): BJP leader Varun Gandhi on April 15 defended his decision to be with the BJP and refused to criticize his cousin Priyanka Gandhi despite her criticism of him. In a speech after filing his nomination papers from Sultanpur, Varun Gandhi took on Priyanka Gandhi — not by name though — for saying that he (Varun) “has gone astray from the right path”. “I have chosen a path which is the path of the country, and I am sure this is the correct path,” he said.
campaigning in Varanasi IANS, VARANASI
A
AP chief Arvind Kejriwal on April 15 plunged into campaigning for the Varanasi Lok Sabha constituency, where he will face BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi. Arriving here after a overnight train ride from Delhi, Kejriwal met a Muslim leader and also a group of traders and listened to their problems. Party sources told IANS that former Delhi chief minister was staying at a priest’s house in Tulsi Ghat. Kejriwal also held small roadside public meeting in various places in the Hindu holy city. “He listened to the problems of people and explained to them what AAP has for them,” a senior party leader told IANS. “There will be more public meetings from Wednesday,” he added.

T
he climb from the ghats of Varanasi to New Delhi’s 7 Race Course Road is proving to be steep and replete with roadblocks for Bharatiya Janata Party’s prime ministerial aspirant Narendra Modi, veteran Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) organizers admit. “The BJP and RSS have given us the target of securing a victory
margin of 300,000 votes for Modi. He would be lucky if he manages to win by 30,000 to 40,000 votes. There are three parallel setups, often working at cross-purposes, entrusted with the task of managing Modi’s election campaign. Is this how a war is fought and won,” a veteran RSS organizer, who has managed successive Lok Sabha, state assembly and Varanasi Municipal Corporation elections since 1977, asked while speaking
to IANS. One set of workers comprise the local RSS cadre, who religiously attend the shakhas held every morning in their respective localities. Another set is that of mid-level RSS organizers sent to Varanasi from different parts of the country. The third set comprises of city and district party workers. “Gone are the days when RSS volunteers and BJP workers used to put in their own time and money to campaign for the party
candidates. All political parties now engage paid workers, and the BJP is no exception,” said an RSS organizer. “For many political workers, election time is when they get the chance to make money,” said Sunil Tripathi, a former activist of the JP movement of the 1970s. Apprehensions and the disorderly campaign machinery apart, Modi is widely expected to win, though a low win margin may dent his image.

Ukraine on verge of civil war: Putin Russian Prez, German Chancellor express hope the Geneva meet could send ‘strong message’ IANS, MOSCOW
T
he escalation of conflict in Ukraine has brought the country to the verge of civil war, Kremlin said in a statement on April 16. Russian President Vladimir Putin during a telephonic conversation with German Chancellor Angela Merkel late on April 15 night warned of the possibility of civil war, the Kremlin press service said on April 16. The two leaders “exchanged opinions about the anticonstitutional course of the incumbent Kiev authorities towards the suppression by force of popular protests in southeastern Ukraine,” the Kremlin statement added. Putin and Merkel accentuated the importance of the four-party negotiations between Russia, the EU, the US and Ukraine scheduled for April 17, expressing the hope that the Geneva meeting could send a “strong message” to encourage events to take a peaceful route, Xin-
Russian President Vladimir Putin has taken a tough stand on Ukraine
Ease tension in Ukraine: Obama US President Barack Obama urged Russian President Vladimir Putin over phone to influence the proRussian activists to stop their protests in eastern Ukraine, media reported on April 15. The telephonic conversation between the two leaders came as the crisis in eastern Ukraine is increasing since the pro-Russian activists continued to occupy buildings in the eastern towns, BBC reported.
hua reported. Putin also highlighted the importance of solving the problems of Ukraine's economic stabilization and the provision of deliveries and transit of Russian natural gas to Europe. A new wave of unrest erupted in eastern Ukraine over the weekend, as pro-Russia activists seized several government buildings in the cities of Donetsk, Lugansk and Kharkov, demanding a referendum on autonomy and closer ties with Russia. Meanwhile, Ukrainian Parliament on April 15 passed a bill declaring the southern Crimea peninsula as “territory temporarily occupied by the Russian Federation”, the Parliament's press service said in a statement.
‘No more spying on Muslims in NY’ WASHINGTON: New York Police Department has disbanded a controversial surveillance unit started after the September 11, 2001, attacks to catalogue information on Muslim businesses and mosques across the New York region. Developed with the CIA's help after 9/11, the socalled Demographics Unit-or Zone Assessment Unithas been the target of controversy and civil lawsuits. “Understanding certain local demographics can be a useful factor when assessing information regarding potential threats coming to the attention of the New York City Police Department,” the department said in a statement on April 15. But “it has been determined that much of the same information previously gathered by the Zone Assessment Unit may be obtained through direct outreach by the NYPD to the communities concerned,” it said. Muslim Advocates and the Centre for Constitutional Rights, two advocacy groups that filed a lawsuit chal-
lenging the unit and its activities in 2012, said they were pleased it had been disbanded but want to ensure the surveillance stops. Welcoming the dismantling of the unit “as a long overdue step towards reining in the unconstitutional excesses of the NYPD” they said in a joint statement, “what has to stop is the practice of suspicion-less surveillance of Muslim communities, not just the unit assigned to do it.” “We will continue to work to ensure the NYPD is fully and finally respecting the rights of the Muslim community.” The suit, Hassan v. City of New York, was dismissed in Feb and is currently under appeal. The New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, also welcomed the disbanding of the surveillance unit. “This is an important first step. However, the damage of unconstitutional mass spying on people solely on the basis of their religion has already been carried out and must be addressed,” said Board President Ryan Mahoney. — IANS

Taliban prisoners’s release approved ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has approved release of 12 Taliban prisoners as a goodwill gesture for bolstering the peace process, Dawn reported on April 13. The daily sited sources as saying that the 12 “low profile suspected militants” held by security agencies could be released in next couple of days to meet a key demand of the Taliban. The Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) leadership recently handed over a list of prisoners to the government negotiating team, the report said. “None of those to be released is important,” the report said. It added that the talks could resume soon after Sharif's return from China, where he is currently visiting. The TTP on April 11 presented two conditions for the talks to continue — immediate release of non-combatant prisoners and declaration of a peace zone where the militants can freely move about.

Bharara takes on NY Governor Governor’s decision to close an anti-corruption commission as part of a deal with legislators has been questioned ARUN KUMAR, WASHINGTON
N
ew York’s IndianAmerican prosecutor Preet Bharara, who is known in India for his dogged prosecution of Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade, has now taken on the state’s Governor Andrew M. Cuomo over his decision to shutter an anti-corruption commission as part of a deal with legislators for an ethics package. Cuomo created the panel “with great fanfare,” shuttered it “unceremoniously”, said Bharara in a radio interview as cited by Newsday, and “thinking people wonder why that happened and want to get to the bottom of it”. “I think in the letter I sent to the commission I said there was an appearance that cases were bargained away in exchange for a political deal,” said the attorney who hit the headlines in India over the way he pursued the prosecution of Indian diplomat Devyani
Khobragade. Bharara, an appointee of President Barack Obama, indicated he was troubled by reports of interference in the commission’s actions. “I don’t know what the facts are,” Bharara was quoted as saying on WNYC’s “The Brian Lehrer Show” on April 12. Bharara, Newsday said, wouldn’t rule out investi-

hirteen members of the United States House of Representatives have cosponsored a House resolution wishing the Sikh American community a joyous Vaisakhi, the Indian harvest festival that also marks the creation of the Khalsa in 1699. “I proudly represent one of the largest Sikh communities in the nation. For decades, we have confronted the challenges of California together, including education
and our current drought,” said House member John Garamendi, lead sponsor of the resolution. Other co-sponsors included the lone Indian-American House member Ami Bera, Judy Chu, David Valadao Joseph Crowley, Doug LaMalfa, Eric Swalwell, Raul Grijalva (AZ), Sheila Jackson Lee, Dina Titus, Barbara Lee, Jackie Speier and Rush Holt. The resolution noted that “Sikhs in the United States pursue diverse professions and walks of life, making rich contributions to the eco-
played criticism of his decision to shutter the commission saying “It was created to spur the legislation”. “I said repeatedly when the legislation was passed the commission would be disbanded,” the governor was quoted as saying by Newsday at a Rochester news conference at about the same time Bharara was on the radio. Cuomo and legislators in closeddoor negotiations agreed to enact some election law changes and toughen bribery statutes. In exchange, the governor terminated the commission that was originally slated to work through the end of this year. Newsday says Bharara’s investigations of state legislators helped spark, in part, the creation of the commission last year. In letters to the commission, Bharara asked it to “preserve all documents that may be under your control” — including emails. “We’re going to look at the documents,” Bharara was quoted as saying in an interview.
medical tribunal in Britain has cleared an Indian-origin doctor of allegedly performing female genital mutilation on a woman during a routine plastic surgery. Sureshkumar Pandya, a general practitioner, who did a routine labiaplasty surgery on a 33year-old woman in East London’s Regency Clinic in March 2012, has been accused of botching up the procedure and mutilating the genitals of the woman, identified only as A, in the process. The panel found the anatomical result of the procedure could be said “to be equivalent to Female Genital Mutilation’(FGM),” but cleared Pandya of the charge as he did not intend to perform the operation on the woman, Daily Mail reported on April 11. The woman said that the surgery left her feeling “violated and butchered” with virtually the same effects as genital mutilation, the
Manchester tribunal heard. Chair Anthony Morgan said there has been insufficient evidence to prove that Pandya set out to remove all or virtually all of Patient A’s labia minora or vaginal lips. “In your evidence you stated that you were totally against the practice of FGM and would not have any reason to carry it out. In the light of your character and the testimony you gave, the panel accepts this,” the chair was quoted as saying. The Indian-origin doctor, in his defense, contended that there was nothing unusual about the operation and the procedure.

Ekal Vidyalaya Foundation Chicago Chapter organized the charity fund-raiser event to provide free education to rural and tribal villages of India. Vibhavari Yadav and Sunil Menon rendered melodious songs. Isha Foundation to pay tribute to first yogi
C
BY A STAFF WRITER
an you name the first yogi? How about the first yoga teacher? Well, about 300 million people throughout the world practice yoga, including more than 40 million Americans. However, even avid practitioners are unaware of the origins of yoga, an ancient Indian system of physical, mental and spiritual exercises that help one to control and relax both mind and body. An upcoming celebration hosted by Isha Foundation on May 3 at the Hindu Temple of Greater Chicago Auditorium aims to shed light on the story and contributions of the first yogi, or Aadi Yogi, through a thematic production featuring the expressive art of Indian classical dance. “An Evening of Dance – A Tribute to Aadi Yogi”, open to all, will showcase pieces from Natya Dance Theatre, with dances choreographed by acclaimed dancer Hema Rajagopalan, and will include performances by Radhe Jaggi Vasudev, Shivani Patel and Niyata Madhukar. This colorful feast of music and dance is part of a series of events across the country hosted by Isha Foundation in tribute and acknowledgement of the Aadi Yogi and his contributions to humanity. The yogic lore, known to the mystics and sages of India, speaks of Aadi Yogi who first offered the technology of taking one’s life energies to the very peak and making the human system a ladder to the Divine. Today, we refer to this being as Shiva, but in yoga, Shiva is not seen as a God, but as the Aadi Yogi, or first yogi, and the Aadi Guru, or first guru, who offered the yogic technology - a possibility for individual transformation and raising human consciousness. Sadhguru Vasudev, yogi, mystic and founder of Isha Foundation, explains, “The Aadi Yogi brought the possibility that a human being need not be contained in the defined limitations of our species. There is a way to be contained in physicality but not to belong to it. There is a way to inhabit the body but never become the body. There is a way to use your mind in the highest possible way but still never know the miseries of the mind. Whatever dimension of existence you are in right now,
you can go beyond that – there is another way to live. He said, ‘You can evolve beyond your present limitations if you do the necessary work upon yourself.’ And he gave methods as to how to evolve. That is the significance of the Aadi Yogi.” Sadly, most of those who teach or learn in today’s yoga studios are unaware of Aadi Yogi. “Today what is being practiced in yoga studios has rendered yoga into a sophisticated exercise form and completely innocent of the immense possibilities embedded in the yogic science,” Sadhguru observes. It is to the Aadi Yogi, then, and the gift of the sacred science of yoga, that the world owes its knowledge of self. Attendees of the evening performances will experience the story of the ancient yogi brought to life through dances displaying exuberance, intensity and grace, offering a new perspective on a being whose existence and insight have reverberated throughout mankind for millennia. The performance tour will also introduce the creation of Aadi Yogi: The Abode of Yoga at the Isha Institute of Inner-sciences (III) in McMinnville, Tennessee. This powerful space will stand as a landmark and energy foundation for yoga in the western world, offering to generations of seekers the possibility of deeper knowledge and inner experience of the timeless wisdom and grace of Aadi Yogi.

Gulzar to receive
Dadasaheb Phalke Award Award a recognition for his outstanding contribution to Indian cinema IANS, NEW DELHI
V
eteran poet and film lyricist Gulzar has been chosen for the coveted Dadasaheb Phalke Award for 2013, the ministry of information and broadcasting announced here on April 11. The multi-faceted Gulzar, whose real name is Sampooran Singh Kalra, is a lyricist, director, screen writer, producer and poet. He is the 45th winner of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award. Gulzar’s daughter Meghna took to Twitter, immediately after the news was announced, to share her joy. “Dadasaheb Phalke award for my father. So proud,” she posted. The award is conferred by the government for outstanding contribution to the growth and development of Indian cinema. Bimal Julka, secretary, ministry of information and broadcasting, congratulated Gulzar on the momentous occasion. Born in 1934 in Punjab in pre-independence India, Gulzar started his career in 1956. As a lyricist, he got his first break in Bimal Roy’s Bandini. He then worked with leading composers like Sachin Dev Burman, Salil Chowdhury, Shankar-Jaikishan, Hemant Kumar, Laxmikant-Pyarelal, Madan Mohan, Rajesh Roshan, Anu Malik and the new age ShankarEhsaan-Loy. The 79-year-old was conferred the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2002 and the Padma Bhushan in 2004 . He has won a number of National Film Awards and 20 Filmfare Awards. At the 81st Oscars in 2009, he won the Academy Award for best original song for “Jai ho” with Rahman. His poetry has been published in three compilations: Chand Pukhraaj Ka, Raat Pashminey Ki and Pandrah Paanch Pachattar.

traightaway, this film wins you over with its clean heart and straight-talking attitude to the rot that has set into our governmental system. You want a change in the nation’s politics? Then change the politicians! It’s really as simple as that. Director Nitesh Tiwari who codirected the endearing kiddies’ concoction Chillar Party finally unravels one of the greatest mysteries of poetic life.
What did Wordsworth mean when he said, ‘Child is the father of man’? Watch little Parth Bhalerao spar effortlessly with the formidable Mr Bachchan. And you see in front of your dazzled eyes the future of Indian cinema. Parth simply sails through his slum-kid’s role, creating for his character little pockets of perkiness and poignancy without ever playing aggressively for effect. He speaks his lines with the casual grace of a theatre veteran.
Meengal’, Telugu drama ‘Na Bangaru Thalli’, Kannada film ‘Prakruthi’ and Malayalam drama ‘24 North Kaatham’ were among the southern movies that pocketed 17 awards. Girish Malik’s directorial debut ‘Jal’ was named the best film in the special effects category at the 61st National Film Awards. The director said it is “a great moment”.
Epitome of gracious screen-sharing that he is, Mr Bachchan simply slows down to let his little co-star to take centrestage, bowing to the little actor’s consummate naturalness even when faced with very adult problems like corruption in politics, the redundancy of democracy
and yes, the validity and imperativeness of the vote. Firing a topical salvo this ballot drama is speckled with some disarming display of feisty homilies. The film builds on the premise of a benign ghost’s friendship with the slum-kid without allowing the nar-
League and to represent the vibrant city of Mumbai. Football has never been far away from my daily life since childhood, and now as a partner in the ISL, I am looking forward to translate my passion into contributing to the growth of the sport,” said Ranbir. “I firmly believe in the grassroots and community development program designed by the league organizers IMG Reliance, to popularise the game and that’s one thing which excited me to be part of this dream.”
rative to become a flashy showcase for either of the two actors’ performing abilities. Boman Irani as the slimy politician enriches the political drama further by providing a tangy tangible flavor of decay and corruption in this amiably contoured morality tale. Director Tiwari’s heart bleeds for the country’s electoral crisis. No matter who wins the elections, the public loses. Bhootnath Returns dissolves those walls of cynicism that we’ve built to protect our conscience from politics. It gives us a vivid if somewhat didactic view of a democracy that mocks the very multitude that believes in it. During this season of heavy electioneering a light heartfelt take on the vote bank is just what the doctor prescribed. And yes, Amitabh Bachchan and Parth Bhalerao are the coolest pair of dudes since Jai and Veeru. — By Subhash K. Jha

My mother inspires my style: Deepika
Katrina awestruck by Lucknawi bridal look
MUMBAI: Model-turned-actress Deepika Padukone, who can give her contemporaries a run for their money when it comes to style, says her style statement is “simple” and “elegant” like her mother Ujjala. “In my growing up years, my mother was my style icon and she still is. She is someone who has influenced my style a lot,” Deepika said on April 10 at the launch of a limited collection of Van Heusen spring/summer collection designed by her. The actress gives due credit to her mother for her fashion sensibilities. “Today when I talk about my personal style being classic, simple, elegant...it all comes from the way she used to dress. I have never been someone who has accessorized a lot and that comes from her,” said Deepika.
NEW DELHI: Actress Katrina Kaif, who flaunts four Indian bridal looks for an ad, says she liked the Lucknawi avatar the most for its elegance and minimal yet glamorous look. In the new mango drink Slice Swayaamvar commercials, Katrina is seen in four bridal avatars, which were designed by well-known designer Anaita Shroff Adajania. The commercials highlight Slice’s three new variants chosen from across the country. “It was a spectacular experience to dress as a multiple bride for this beautiful concept called Slice Swayaamvar. I love the fact that India has such a rich culture to borrow from when it comes to bridal splendor, and each region has its own trademark style,” Katrina, who mostly dresses up in western attire for films, said in a statement. “I was floored with all the looks, because each look is so traditional, yet has refreshing elements of modernity. My personal favorite was the Lucknowi avatar as it is very elegant, minimal yet glamorous and akin to my style statement,” she added. For her generic bride look, Katrina donned a red lehenga, a long choli, and a red bindi. As a Lucknawi bride, Katrina looks stunning in vintage shades of green and baby pink, created by a silent embroiderer in the Lucknawi gharana style, with a modern adah of crystals. The Dhoom:3 star drapes traditional Kanjivaram sari for the Southern look that was reinterpreted as a structured contemporary gown, with a 10foot trail, along with heavy golden South Indian temple jewelry.
Alia becomes fond of Revathi MUMBAI: Two-film old Alia Bhatt, who worked with actressdirector Revathi in their forthcoming film 2 States, says they share a strong bond akin to that of a mother and daughter. “Towards the end of the film, I developed mother-daughter relationship with her (Revathi). The way she touched my face, I kind of felt that warmth with her. What also I realized is that while working with her I became a good actor. “What she brings to the table is not just the dialogues. She would bring much more... I felt like she was my mother. I could bring the emotions only because of her. She is a fantastic actor,” Alia told IANS. Revathi plays Alia’s mother in 2 States, adapted from Chetan Bagat’s novel by the same name. The Highway star is also fond of actress Kareena Kapoor and says that she feels great when she is compared to the Jab We Met star. “I can be flattered. I have done two films and people are comparing me with her.”
Sonakshi’s punctuality impresses producers
‘I am still a Delhi boy at heart’
I wouldn’t call myself a star: Varun Dhawan MUMBAI: Young actor Varun Dhawan, whose fan following seems to have increased following his latest release Main Tera Hero, wants to avoid calling himself a “star”. He says that establishing a connect with the audience will always be of importance for him. “I wouldn’t call myself a star. Not now, not ever,” said Varun, who made his debut with Student Of The Year. “I’m here because I love the movies. I am not here to make money. By god’s grace I don’t have to worry about my next 4,000 meals. At the same time, I am not here to do charity either. But my relationship with the audience will always be more important than all other considerations. I’ve to make sure of that,” he said.

MUMBAI: Sidharth Malhotra, who shifted base from the capital to the country’s entertainment capital Mumbai, says while Mumbai has made him what he is today, he’s still a Delhi boy at heart. “I was lucky to come in (to Mumbai) at a time when they (people) were looking for new talent. I have done my share of auditions. I have evolved and changed over the period and Mumbai has a lot to do with that,” the 29-year-old said here at the unveiling of the cover of Men’s Health magazine featuring him.
Sunny has no regret for her past MUMBAI: Actress Sunny Leone, who is riding high on the success of her latest Bollywood project Ragini MMS 2, says she doesn’t look back with regret at her past as an adult film star. “As far as my career goes I don’t regret anything that I have done. I believe that everything that I have done has led me to today,” Sunny told reporters at the unveiling of the cover page of Mandate magazine, featuring her. “This is the most amazing time of my life and this would not have been happening if my past did not exist,” said the former porn star.
MUMBAI: Holiday is the fourth film in which Sonakshi Sinha has been cast with Akshay Kumar. She says there’s no doubt that they share a good working rapport, but the fact that they are both punctual also keeps the producers happy. The duo has earlier featured in films like Rowdy Rathore, Joker and Once Upon Ay Time in Mumbai Dobaara. “Holiday is my fourth film with Akshay. I think once when a pair is accepted, people like enjoy watching them together on-screen and I guess that’s why people even cast them,” Sonakshi told IANS. The actress, who has also worked with Salman Khan, Ajay Devgn, Ranveer Singh, Saif Ali Khan and Shahid Kapoor, added: “I’ve had a very good working rapport will all of my co-stars. Nobody has complained about me and they never said they don’t want to work with me. So that comfort level is there even with Akshay sir.”

Will Irfan make a comeback?
Pathan, who played his last Test in 2008, said his dream is to return to the test side. He played 29 Tests, took 100 wickets and scored over 1,100 runs.
All rounder hopes his experience in IPL will help him to play for India again MOHAMMED SHAFEEQ, HYDERABAD
H
opeful of achieving his “ultimate goal” of making a comeback to the Indian team, allrounder Irfan Pathan on April 11said he was looking forward to use the opportunity provided by the Indian Premier League (IPL). Pathan, who will be playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the T20 tournament, beginning in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) April 16, will try to use his experience in the field to improve his performance in order to achieve the goal. “Making a comeback is my ultimate goal but at the same time I have to make sure that I really do well for Sunrisers Hyderabad and when I do that it will automatically serve good purpose for me in the coming season. India is going to play lot of cricket in the coming and there is going to be another season after that. I am working towards the goal and hopefully I will achieve it,” Pathan told IANS. “The more matches I play, the better it will be for me to improve the performance. It’s all about keep playing matches. I have to
play good cricket not only for myself but for the team,” said the all-rounder from Baroda. “I have staged a comeback earlier too. I know how to do it. It’s simple. You to have perform and be fit,” he said. Asked what went wrong as he could not retain his place in one-day and T20 despite making a comeback two years ago, the 29year-old said he was out of the team due to injury although he was performing well. Pathan is happy and content with whatever he has achieved during last 11 years. “I am happy and content with whatever I have achieved. Anybody would like to be number eight bowler for the country in alltime list and I am in that list. I have achieved quite a few things and God has been very kind to me. There is lot of time left and lot more success and lot more achievements will come my way,” he said. Pathan, who played his last test in 2008, said his dream is to return to the test side. He played 29 tests, took 100 wickets and scored over 1,100 runs. He said he played nine matches for Baroda ahead of the IPL and also played oneday matches in domestic cricket and gave good performance despite the injury.
Badminton: Srikanth goes down fighting to Lee Chong IANS, SINGAPORE
I
ndia’s rising shuttler Kidambi Srikanth went down in the men’s singles semi-finals but not before giving a tough fight to Malaysian World No.1 Lee Chong Wei at the $300,000 Singapore Open Super Series here on April 12. Despite putting up a strong showing against the top seed, the World No.25 Indian went down 19-21, 18-21 in 42 minutes at the Singapore Indoor Stadium. With this wine triumph, twotime Olympic silver medalist Lee has taken a 2-0 lead in career meetings over Srikanth. The Thailand Open Grand Prix Gold winner started the last match of the day in superb fashion. Srikanth gave a tough fight to the Malaysian in the first game. From 15-16 down, Srikanth used his brilliant smashes to good effect to take a 19-16 lead. Almost on the verge of bagging the game, nerves got the better of
IPL-type fever to grip soccer fans MUMBAI: Indian football entered the glamour world as some of the country’s top celebrities — from cricketers to Bollywood actors and businessmen – on April 13 bought the franchise rights for the eightteam inaugural Indian Super League (ISL) that will be held during September-November. Former India cricket captains Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly bagged Kochi and Kolkata, respectively, while Bollywood stars

Srikanth as he made a series of unforced errors to let go of the game. With Srikanth’s exit, Indian challenge at the tourney came to an end. Lee Chong Wei, however, fell to Indonesia's Simon Santoso in the final on April 13. World No.52 Santoso won the first game 21-15 and led most of the second. Lee won six consecutive points to make it 10-12 but again lagged behind before surrendering 10-21 at the Singapore Stadium.
Ranbir Kapoor, Salman Khan and John Abraham bought Mumbai, Pune and Guwahati, respectively. The remaining three cities to make the cut are Delhi, Bangalore and Goa. Delhi will be owned by Sameer Manchandra.
Narain Karthikeyan crashes out of Super Formula opener IANS, SUZUKA (JAPAN)
D
espite qualifying second in the Super Formula season opener at the Suzuka Circuit, Narain Karthikeyan’s race came to a premature end after a collision with eventual winner Loic Duval ended his chances of a top-five finish. The Indian had qualified on the front row on April 12 but had to start fifth after being slapped with a three-place grid penalty as he was adjudged to have impeded another car in free practice. “It has been a disappointing end to the weekend after a promising start. We should have started on the front row but were fifth on the grid and then the incident with Duval scrapped any remaining hopes,” said Karthikeyan. “During the drivers’ briefing, the organisers were clear that a three-place penalty will be awarded in case a driver is found impeding others during qualifying. But in my case it was during the start of the practice session which doesn’t really count towards anything. So the penalty was
Narain Karthikeyan
quite harsh and unfair and such miscommunication needs to be avoided,” he said. The newly-revamped Super Formula series, formerly known as Formula Nippon, has switched to a new Dallara SF14 chassis this year, powered by a two-litre 550 bhp turbo-charged engine. Driving for Team Impul, Karthikeyan was still harboring hopes of a strong finish, given his pace. Having made a decent getaway off the line, the Indian retained his position during the opening minutes of the 43-lap race and concentrated on maintaining his pace.

Will anything change in India with new prime minister? After the election results are out, a new government will take charge in New Delhi. But will the age-old system undergo any change? Will the masses get some solace?
We need to clearly understand and appreciate that changing someone in the Prime Minister’s office will not change the government.
AMIT KAPOOR, NEW DELHI
T
he mood for change in the country is strong, and it is imminent that we would have a new prime minister and quite likely with a significant majority. We are all under the veil of the audacity of hope thinking in assuming that the office of the new prime minister will sway a magic wand and things will immediately start improving. We need to clearly understand and appreciate that changing someone in the Prime Minister’s office will not change the government. We will have a new set of ministers in the system, and that is the limit to change. We shall see as the government will still, as always, be run by the bureaucracy who would have the same set of ideas, stuck in
the past with exceedingly shallow perspectives. Why do I make such audacious statements? This is for a simple reason that within the Parliamentary system very little changes. We all know that there is no change in bureaucracy when the government changes. To assert the point: we can clearly state that millions within the government still remain exactly the same. The problem within the system is that the government employees are permanent (breeding incestuous ideas) and have the most power (incidentally brutal power
If we wish to change the government than we need to change the bureaucracy. We need to imbibe from the US system wherein the spoils go to the victorious. with no accountability). It is a well-known, though ignored, that it is really the bureaucrats who run the government. The problem gets accentuated
since the bureaucrat knows that he is governed by higher ups in the bureaucracy with the ministers having minimal influence over their careers. Without a doubt, civil servants will typically cover each other’s backs with nobody accepting ultimate responsibility and accountability while delivering duties. The understanding we need to build in this country is that if we wish to change the government than we need to change the bureaucracy. We need to imbibe from the U.S. system wherein the spoils go to the victorious.
The president in the U.S. gets to appoint everybody at the top and positions of significance i.e., secretaries of various departments. The most significant reality of this idea is that the bureaucrat in this case has not been part of the governmental system and is beholden by the idea of performing and keeping to the mandate as asserted by the president. What matters here is that newer ideas come in with incestuous tendencies being taken care of and most of all having the ability to fire a non-performing asset called the bureaucrat. If India needs to change, then it needs to change its bureaucracy and effectively its civil services. What we might need is a special commission that tries to understand and work towards dismantling the archaic bureaucracy, which is a remnant of the Raj. Incidentally we could have Arvind Kejriwal as the head of the commission as he understands the bureaucracy, has suffered from its hands and it could be an exceptional political move from the next prime minister. I just hope that Narendra Modi is listening to this and acts decisively. He has run the election campaign akin to a presidential campaign in the U.S., and I do hope that he runs the government in a similar fashion with an iron fist by getting rid of the archaic thoughts that are personified by the bureaucracy.
Manmohan Singh: A good man let down by the party A natural leader, the Prime Minister was not properly guided by the Congress party TARUN BASU, NEW DELHI
I
have an abiding memory of Manmohan Singh. It goes far back to the days when he was not the prime minister, not even the finance minister, when in the early ‘90s he took transformational steps to open up and liberalize a collapsing Indian economy and got his name etched in the history of global economics. It was at a child’s birthday party in a residential enclave dominated by government officers where my wife and I found ourselves standing next to a genial-looking Sikh in casual shirt and trousers, and his wife. He was, I told her, the man just named as the chief economic adviser to the new prime
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh
minister, Chandra Shekhar, who had replaced V.P. Singh at the head of a minority government
propped up by the Congress in November 1990. True to his character, Manmohan did not socialize much, smiled little, did some perfunctory neighborhood small talk and left. The quiet academic, who had excelled both at Oxford and Cambridge universities, was once described by his alma mater, that honored him after he became the prime minister, as someone who left the “scholar’s life in the shade... to the dust and clamor of the political battle (in India)”, driven by his “sense of duty to his country”. Even as his career graph in the next few years took this economics professor to dizzying levels of responsibility — from finance minister to member of
the Congress Working Committee to Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha to prime minister — it did little to change the taciturn man who spoke only when spoken to and who made little effort to strike up a conversation. But all those who have worked with him acknowledge him as a man of scholarship, dedication, intellect — the late national security adviser J.N. Dixit had rated his intellectual caliber “perhaps higher than Jawaharlal Nehru” — and tremendous hard work, who spent long hours into the night poring over government papers and pondering over policy moves. On the last day of the 15th Lok Sabha, which also happened to be the last day in the House for
Manmohan Singh as Prime Minister, BJP leader Arun Jaitley paid him tribute as a “man of scholarship” who was not a “natural leader” and who lacked the capacity to be the “driving force” for the government in parliament. If Manmohan Singh were better advised, especially in his second term (his former media adviser, Sanjaya Baru, quit just before the 2009 election), Manmohan may still have been the star brand on whose work the Congress rode to victory in 2009. The failure of the government, party and the prime minister himself to communicate its achievements and explain properly the perceived failures was its single-biggest undoing.
