he solar powered aircraft, Solar Impulse 2 (Si2), on a global flight, landed here on March 10 night, officials said. The aircraft landed at the Ahmedabad airport around 11.45 p.m. IST. The flight was received with loud cheers and clapping by a large group of people gathered at the airport to witness the historic landing. The aircraft has been built not just to fly around the world without an iota of fuel, but also carry a message demon-
strating effectiveness of clean technologies and importance of sustainability. Powered only by the sun’s rays, the aircraft took off from Muscat on March 9
and flew over Pakistan before entering Indian airspace over the Arabian Sea towards Gujarat, an official of the Aditya Birla Group, which is hosting the flight here, said. Si2 is the brainchild of founders Bertrand Piccard, a psychiatrist who flew around the world in a hot-air balloon in 1999, and former Swiss fighter pilot Andre Borschberg, also an experienced flight design engineer. “Si2 drives the message of synergizing growth with responsibility,” said Aditya Birla Group chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla.

US students protest police shooting of African American boy Tony Robinson, a young unarmed African American, was reportedly killed by a policeman IANS, WASHINGTON
Fight against racism in US not over: Obama
H
undreds of students marched through the streets of Madison in the US state of Wisconsin this week to protest the killing of Tony Robinson, a young unarmed African American, by a policeman last week. Protesters walked peacefully to the state’s legislative building, carrying a white banner displaying the slogan “Black Lives Matter”, Efe news agency reported. The slogan first appeared in mid2014 after the deaths of African Americans Eric Garner in New York and Michael Brown in Ferguson, both shot by police officers. Students left classes to fill the entrance and first floor of the Wisconsin state Capitol where they shouted “We are Tony Robinson” amidst calls for justice. Students and protesters have also taken to social networks with the hashtag #TonyRobinson. Madison police chief Mike Koval visited the Robinson family over the weekend and apologized on Monday for the death of the teenager. “Reconciliation cannot begin without my stating ‘I am sorry’ and I don’t think I can say this enough. I am sorry. I hope that, with time,

Tony’s family and friends can search their hearts to render some measure of forgiveness.” Robinson’s death at the hands of police adds to the list of similar killings which have made police discrimination against minorities a lead issue in the US. In a press conference on behalf of the family, Robinson’s uncle Turin Carter said that police work is necessary and that police are even heroic at times, but that some things need to change.
Arun Singh new Indian envoy to US NEW DELHI: Arun Kumar Singh, has been appointed India’s next Ambassador to the US, the Ministry of External Affairs announced. Singh replaces S Jaishankar, who shifted to New Delhi after being appointed as Foreign Secretary this year. Singh joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1979 after completing his Master’s Degree in Economics from Delhi University and had a two-year teaching stint at the university.
Singh is presently the Indian Ambassador to France. He also served at India’s Permanent Mission Arun Singh to the United Nations Office, New York, in 19931997 as Counsellor and handled multilateral social and economic negotiations.
US backs gay marriages in Supreme Court WASHINGTON: The Obama administration called state bans on samesex marriage “incompatible with the constitution”, as a brief was filed in the US Supreme Court in support of couples challenging such bans in Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee, a media report said. “The marriage bans challenged in these cases impermissibly exclude lesbian and gay couples from the rights, responsibilities and status of civil marriage,” CNN cited Solicitor General Donald B. Verrilli Jr. as saying. He said the states have “burdened
petitioners in every aspect of life that marriage touches, from the mundane to the profound”. The brief marks the first time the administration has formally made a filing with the court supporting its position that bans on gay marriage should be declared unconstitutional nationwide.
Protesters walked peacefully, carrying a white banner displaying the slogan “Black Lives Matter.” “This is a bigger issue than Tony. This highlights a universal problem with law enforcement and how its procedures have been carried out,” said Carter. He said that although “we don’t think Tony is a saint and
he has made mistakes”, he was a good boy with a good heart. Carter thanked people for their support and requested protesters to carry out marches and vigils peacefully. “We don’t want to stop at just ‘black lives matter,’ because all lives matter,” said Carter, whose nephew Robinson had a white mother and black father. According to police, the incident occurred after they responded to reports of suspicious behavior by Robinson.
WASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama has said that the fight against racism in the US is not yet over, during a speech in Selma, Alabama on the 50th anniversary of the peaceful march of African Americans demanding the right to vote, which was the catalyst of the Voting Rights Act. “We know the march is not yet over,” the president said to the thousands of people on the Edmund Pettus Bridge where the activists were harshly repressed by police in 1965, an incident that has gone down in history as “Bloody Sunday.” “We just need to open our eyes, and ears, and hearts, to know that this nation’s racial history still casts its long shadow upon us,” Obama said.
Romney loves India more after 9-day trip ARUN KUMAR, WASHINGTON
A
fter a nine-day trip to India with his family working with Charity Vision, former US Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has returned home “with greater appreciation, both for India and for America”. The Provo, Utah, based Charity Vision, whose mission is to “bring an end to curable blindness” provides surgery for the very poor in 25 countries, including India. Last year, it carried out almost 40,000 surgeries. “Remarkably, it does this on a budget of just over $1 million —about $25 per surgery” wrote Romney in a post on the trip on Medium.com. “India is sensory overload: the horns, the press of people, the pollution, the heartbreaking poverty, and yes, the beauty of its landscape and edifices are overwhelming,” he wrote. “Through it all, however, inspiring points of human light shined brightly: doctors who donate mul-
tiple days every week, a mother who has opened her family circle to include 108 orphans, children who tenderly care for a sister or brother.” “What a blessing for me, my sons, and for my grandchildren to witness another great and free people building a better future for themselves, drawing on the strength of the human spirit,” Romney wrote. “We return home with greater appreciation, both for India and for America.”
The former Massachusetts governor, who in January announced that he would not be making a third run for the White House, was in India with sons Matt and Josh and four grandkids. Josh, who is the part-time and volunteer president of Charity Vision, got the entire Romney family involved in the India trip. “Together, we hosted 14 people who had generously donated to the charity. We saw the sights in Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, and Varanasi,” Romney wrote.

‘India’s Daughter’ premieres in US The documentary is being watched across the globe despite an Indian court’s ban on it; the Indian government sends legal notice to BBC; chorus to lift ban on its telecast and watching in India grows IANS, WASHINGTON
‘Indian govt should be ashamed’
A
ctresses Meryl Streep, Freida Pinto, Dakota Fanning and singer Chris Martin were among those at the premiere of the BBC documentary “India’s Daughter’, which tells the story of Jyoti Singh, a 23year-old paramedical student who was brutally raped by six men as she rode a bus in 2012. The event was organized by women’s-rights groups Vital Voices and Plan International at Manhattan’s Baruch College. The documentary by British filmmaker Leslee Udwin that carries an interview with Mukesh Singh, one of the six accused, has kicked up a storm in India, with Indian government securing a court’s order to ban the film. The Indian government has also issued a legal notice to the BBC after it aired the documentary on March 4, four days ahead of its scheduled telecast. YouTube had blocked access to the controversial documentary, citing court orders. Streep led a candle-lighting ceremony before the screening, reading some of the victim’s accounts of the assault, then issued a plea to the audience. “We’re called here to contend

with something more than rape,” Streep was quoted as saying. “What is worse than violence? Violence sanctioned by misogyny.” Pinto, a producer on the movie, told the Times in an interview before the screening that she saw this as “a universal story, and something I got involved with because it’s not just about what happens in India”. Udwin, has also denied accusations in the Indian media that Mukesh Singh was either paid for his time or interviewed without his consent.
Revoke ban on documentary: Editors’ Guild NEW DELHI: The Editors’ Guild of India has appealed to the government to revoke the ban on airing of the BBC documentary on the December 16, 2012 gang-rape, terming the move “wholly unwarranted”. In a statement, the Guild said the documentary, ‘Storyville: India’s daughter’, portrayed the courage, sensibility and liberal outlook of a family traumatized by the brutality inflicted on their daughter, the continuing “shameful
attitudes” towards women among the interviewed rapist as well as the educated, including the defense lawyers. It said their rationale that the ban was in the interest of justice and public order as the film “created a situation of tension and fear amongst women”. It said that the convict would use the media to further his case in the appeal that was subjudice, seems to be an after-thought.
WASHINGTON: British-based filmmaker Leslee Udwin said the Indian government should hang its head in shame for banning her documentary on the December 16, 2012 fatal gang-rape of a 23-year-old Delhi woman. “The home minister (Rajnath Singh) blamed the protesters when these were protests on the Gandhian level, peaceful and right and good,” Udwin told the Los Angeles Times. “The irony is it only became violent when the police got involved.” “The government should hang its head in shame” for the ban, she was quoted as saying in an interview on March 9 before the U.S. premiere of her film at event in downtown Manhattan ahead of an airing on PBS.
Lok Sabha okays land bill Coal case: Court summons Manmohan IANS, NEW DELHI
A
NEW DELHI: The Lok Sabha passed the contentious land acquisition bill on March 10 amid a walkout by opposition parties even as the government moved nine amendments to address concerns raised by farmers. Shiv Sena, an ally of the Bharatiya Janata Party, abstained during the voting. The proposed legislation removes the need for obtaining consent of land-owners and carrying out social impact assessment (SIA) for acquiring land under certain categories — precisely the provisions which had raised the heckles of critics. With opposition members repeatedly insisting on division to register
their disagreement, it took more than an hour for the bill to be passed after the minister’s reply to nearly eight-hour debate. The Right to Fair Compensation, Rehabilitation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Bill, 2015 faces a tough call in the Rajya Sabha where the government is in minority. Opposition leaders in the upper house have already hinted that they would try and send the bill to a Standing or Select Committee. The Congress, which had moved a number of amendments in the Lok Sabha — all were negated — demanded that the bill be sent to the Standing Committee.
special court here on March 11 summoned former prime minister Manmohan Singh, industrialist Kumar Mangalam Birla and former coal secretary P.C. Parakh in a coal block allocation case. The court, after taking cognizance of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) final report in the case, also summoned Hindalco officials Shubendu Amitabh and D. Bhattacharya on April 8. The court summoned them

under various sections of the Indian Penal code dealing with criminal conspiracy, criminal breach of trust and provisions under the Prevention
of Corruption Act. The final compliance report in the matter was filed on the court’s order on February 19. Manmohan Singh was questioned in January in connection with allocation of Talabira II and III coal blocks in Odisha to Hindalco in 2005 when he also held the coal portfolio. Earlier, the agency had filed the statements of various people recorded during its probe. The CBI had in October 2013 booked Birla, Parakh and others on charges of criminal conspiracy and corruption in the case.
Telecom spectrum auction: Fall in highest bids IANS, NEW DELHI
A
fter 37 rounds of bidding for telecom spectrum, there was a small drop in the collective value of the highest bids across bands to `922 billion on Tuesday from `940 billion a day earlier, as stakeholders switched their preferred frequencies. “There was activity in two new service areas in 1,800 MHz band. There is a shift in activity from 2,100 MHz and 900 MHz bands to 1,800 MHz and 800 MHz
bands,” a senior official said. The official further explained that the norms allow a bidding
company to forego its bid for a particular band made earlier to a new band if it is seen that such a switch would prove beneficial, financially and in terms of spectrum management. Hence the small drop. This time around, eight companies are in the fray — Vodafone, Bharti, Idea, Telewings, Aircel, Tata Tele, Reliance Communications and Reliance Jio. The auction is crucial for some of them as their 20-year licence term draws to a close in December.

Kashmir challenge:
Modi could write history or blot it Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Muhammad Sayeed has now assured that no separatist would be released in future without taking the BJP into confidence SAEED NAQVI, NEW DELHI
A
principal reason for Narendra Modi being swept to power in May was disgust with Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Manmohan Singh - indecisive, short on ideas, bereft of charisma and supervising a government of scams. In a house of 543, the Congress had 209 seats. The shortfall of 63 was made up of coalition partners. Manmohan Singh was a fine finance minister but, as prime minister, had a problem of being deferential to the Gandhis to the point of being obsequious. He looked more ineffective than he was. This collective anti-incumbency was harvested by Modi. Big business along with their multinational linkages mounted a media campaign larger than any in electoral history; by some estimates even bigger than the Obama campaign. This campaign too found the adage apt: with opponents like the Congress, who needs friends? For the first time in decades, a single party government came to power. Without any alteration that same defunct Congress is being sought to be resurrected. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is committed to Hindu

nationalism. This does strike a chord with a majority of Hindus. But the storm troopers who helped bring BJP to power were from ultra Hindutva groups like the RSS and the VHP. These extremist groups read the mandate which brought Modi to power according to their exclusive lights. They went on a rampage demanding “ghar wapsi” or reconversion of Muslims and Christians to Hinduism. Hindu women must produce five children to boost population; they
must resist an inexplicable quantity called “Love Jehad”. They went to absurd lengths crediting ancient India with every conceivable scientific invention. Elephant God Ganesha was a result of plastic surgery. They provoked communal riots; barged into parties admonishing youngsters against dancing and drinking beer. Modi waited and watched from an ambiguous distance. By their excesses, they ended up embarrassing the majority of Hin-
dus along with other Indians. This when that very helpful tailwind, the anti incumbency against Sonia, Rahul and Manmohan Singh had disappeared. The international talent Corporate India had mobilized for one full year buying up every square inch of media space to build up Modi as the development messiah, was no longer available. And, above all, prices of food had risen sky high. Came a series of by elections in UP, Bihar, Jharkhand. The Modi magic appeared not to be
working. Then came the elections to the Delhi State Assembly. On a platform against corruption and for social justice the Aam Admi Party trounced the BJP. Of the 70 seats, AAP won 67, making Arvind Kejriwal the David to Modi’s Goliath. The riveting development the one that will define Modi’s innings, has been the power sharing government in Kashmir. This has opened up the possibility of improved relations with Pakistan which in turn will bring down the communal temperature, an enabling precondition for accelerated economic growth. The chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir is the most astute leader of the Peoples Democratic Party, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed. He has vast experience of Delhi too where he has served as the union home minister. He is familiar with all the caverns of intrigue on the Delhi, Srinagar, Islamabad axis. That the BJP and the PDP have joined hands in Kashmir against the backdrop is laden with possibilities. Summer is round the corner. A bumper season to boost tourism in the most magnificent parts of the state right upto the Gurez valley is possible in conditions of peace. It will open up hearts and minds.
Vinod Mehta — an editor people loved to hate
SHUDIP TALUKDAR, KOLKATA
V
inod Mehta ventured into areas where lesser mortals might have feared to tread — either for fear of taking on the establishment or simply because it went against the normal credo. He staked his reputation by declaring Narendra Modi as the next prime minister, despite being highly critical of the man. At that time, every journalist worth his salt argued passionately that it
would never happen, given the country’s complexity, size and identity politics. One of the most acerbic and irreverent of mainstream scribes, he never minced words about politicians or fellow journalists or even spared himself. “I am a very verbose kind of person,” he had once told an interviewer, with an unflattering candor. The self-depreciating Mehta also said that some people have even labelled him a “Congress chamcha”. He also had a dog named Editor. Mehta shared a love-hate relationship with news channels, dubbing half of their content as a joke. “I speak rubbish on TV debates,” he quipped, “yet I'm called again,” he told a popular daily. Mehta came from a diminishing class of journalists who considered TV a notch below the print media. But he confessed to
being flattered when people recognized him at the airports. He considered it to be a “nerve wracking” experience to appear on TV. Controversial as he might have been, Mehta never compromised with his values, no matter what happened. During his stewardship of Outlook weekly magazine, he went ahead with his shocking revelations on the Radia tapes in the telecom scam. In spite of knowing that the expose would damage the credibility of individuals and organizations, besides antagonizing large sections of his fraternity, he stood his ground, unaffected by pressures or the barrage of criticism. He believed that those who had an ethical and social responsibility towards society should not be compromising their values for the sake of self aggrandizement. But then the aftermath hit his empire
like a tsunami. A reputed corporate entity blacklisted the magazine. Prominent journalists boycotted Mehta. A news channel banned him from its programmes, though it must be said that he had published their version. Two years after the disclosure of Radia tapes, Mehta found himself reassigned to a ceremonial role, as the editorial chairman, after helming the group for 17 years. “Radia tapes,” he told scroll.in, a media website, “are a benchmark in seriously damaging the reputation and credibility of journalists, both electronic and print. “The public at large still thought that we are great patriots, we did things in public interest, we would never publish things that were inaccurate, that we would not be swayed by monetary or other considerations.” In opinion polls too, journalists
made it to the top 10 corrupt professionals. Controversy continued to dog Mehta’s footsteps, often described as “brutally honest and frank”. Indian Express slapped him with a Rs.100 crore defamation suit, after he hinted darkly in an interview with Open magazine, that the story on the movement of the two army columns and the alleged coup attempt was planted. The government of the day refuted the news, coming in the wake of tensions generated by then Army chief Gen. V.K. Singh’s date of birth. An unfazed Mehta coolly told the Mumbai Mirror: “What's the fuss, he (Shekhar Gupta) is perfectly entitled to sue me if he wishes to.” Although Mehta went through a very tumultuous phase between 2010 and 2012, towards the fag end of his career, they formed a small part of his illustrious career.

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj takes up the matter with Australia; police release CCTV footage before she was stabbed to death, killer yet to be nabbed IANS, NEW DELHI/CANBERRA
A
n Indian woman IT consultant, employed with Bengaluru-based tech firm MindTree, was stabbed to death while she was walking home from work in the Australian city of Sydney, police said this week. Prabha Arun, in her 40s, was attacked at Amos Street in the western part of the city about 9.30 p.m. on March 7. She was on the phone with her husband Arun Kumar, who lives in Bengaluru with their 10-year-old daughter, when she was stabbed. She was around 300 meters from her Westmead home when she was attacked. The footage show Prabha Arun Kumar, 41, on phone on a well-lit concourse near Parramatta railway station before she took a shortcut through a nearby dimly-lit park where she was attacked and killed, The Sydney Morning Herald reported, adding that police could not find anyone following her or acting suspiciously nearby. “We are at a loss at this point in time,” Detective Superintendent Michael Willing was quoted as saying. He, however, added that there was no reason to suggest it was a race-related attack. Chillingly, the husband heard her tell him “I think I’ve been stabbed”, before she collapsed in a pool of blood. The line then went dead. Police found Prabha Arun “seriously wounded” and took her to the Westmead Hospital where she later died, The Sydney Morning

Swaraj speaks to Australian counterpart NEW DELHI/SYDNEY: External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on March 10 took up with her Australian counterpart the murder of an Indian IT consultant in a Sydney street. Australian police have released CCTV footage of the woman minutes before she was stabbed to death three days ago.
Herald reported, adding that a local man, Arvand Amirian, called police after finding the woman in a pool of blood. The External Affairs Ministry spokesperson tweeted that the Consulate General of India in Sydney was aware of the incident. “All necessary assistance is being provided,” the spokesperson said. In Sydney, police superintendent Wayne Cox said Prabha Arun was
Indian American surgeon first to help injured Harrison Ford LOS ANGELES: Indian-American spine surgeon Sanjay Khurana was playing golf Thursday when a singleengine plane crashed on the course. The pilot was none other than famous Hollywood actor Harrison Ford. Khurana was among the first to pull out the injured star from the wreckage. When Khurana saw the plane crash on the course, next to Santa Monica Airport, he followed his first instinct to rush to the plane to ensure the pilot was safe. At the time, Khurana was golfing on the 7th hole of the Penmar Golf
Course. He saw Ford's plane hit a tree before nose-diving to the ground. He dropped his clubs and ran to the crash site, seeing "a passenger in the rear seat slumped over in distress belted in." "He was stunned a bit," Khurana said. "He was moaning and in pain." Khurana says he quickly recognized the famous pilot. Khurana, who was interviewed by numerous TV channels in Los Angeles, said aside from worrying about Ford's injuries from the impact, he saw fuel leaking out of the World War II-era plane. He and other golfers pulled Ford from the wreckage.
External affairs ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin tweeted that Sushma Swaraj spoke to Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop “regard-
ing the case of Mrs Prabha Arun Kumar. Assured of full cooperation”. Arun Kumar has reached Sydney to complete the formalities of bringing back his wife’s body to India. Prabha was reportedly working a double shift on the day of her death, police said. Indian Australian Association of NSW president Yadu Singh said the company had a duty to ensure its workers got home safely. Officers also spent the day asking residents of Westmead if they had ever seen suspicious activity in the park.
attacked “by a person or unknown persons, and she consequently suffered a life-threatening injury”. “It’s a horrific attack without any stretch of the imagination and certainly my heartfelt condolences go out to the family at this point in time. “There was a large amount of blood so she obviously suffered a significant wound.” Police said Prabha Arun was attacked with a sharp weapon, but
they were yet to find whether the attack was random or targeted. A flatmate of Prabha Arun said she would speak with her husband every day as soon as she finished work and chat for a long time. She was planning to move back to India after her working visa expired. She used to work with AMP before starting her job with India-based IT and outsourcing company MindTree in late 2012.
WASHINGTON: President Barack Obama has nominated Sunil Sabharwal, an independent Indian American investor in the payments sector, as US Alternate Executive Director at International Monetary Fund for a term of two years. The White House sent Sabharwal’s nomination to the Senate on Wednesday. At over two dozen, Obama administration boasts of having the highest number of Indian Americans in key jobs than any previous administrations in the US. Sabharwal, who has been an independent investor since 2006, was the chairman of the Board of Ogone, a European ecommerce payment services company, from 2011 to 2013, according to the White House. He advised Warburg Pincus on its acquisition of Easycash, a German network services company, subsequently becoming a board advisor from 2006 to 2009. From 2003 to 2006, Sabharwal was senior vice president of strategic investments at First Data Corporation/Western Union. From 1997 to 2003, he held several positions at GE Capital, including managing director. From 1992 to 1996 he worked at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. Sabharwal received a BS from The Ohio State University and an MS from the London Business School.
Yogananda: India’s first yoga guru in the US M.R. NARAYAN SWAMY, NEW DELHI
I
f India’s idea of an International Yoga Day has found easy acceptance in the UN, much of the credit must go to Paramhansa Yogananda, India’s first yoga guru in the US whose 62nd death anniversary falls this Saturday. Unlike Swami Vivekananda, Yogananda is not that widely appreciated although he played a huge role in laying the foundation for yoga in the United States a century ago. Yogananda, born Mukunda Lal Ghosh in Gorakhpur, India, sailed to the US in 1920 and remained there until his death in 1952. In that sense, he was also one of India’s
Paramhansa Yogananda
earliest longest serving NRIs. Yogananda toured the US extensively, teaching meditation and Kriya Yoga to tens of thousands of
American men and women in packed halls. Unlike now, that was no easy task. Yoga was unknown in the West, and many Americans looked down upon Hindu holy men, yogis included. The Kriya Yoga is a lesser-known yoga science based on special breathing techniques to help in selfrealization. Yogananda left the US to visit India only once, during which period he taught Kriya Yoga to Mahatma Gandhi at the latter’s ashram in Wardha. What really made Yogananda an iconic figure globally was his “Autobiography of a Yogi”, declared one of the 10 greatest spiritual classics of the last century.

Cuba offers support for Venezuela US imposes additional sanctions on Venezuela over human rights abuses and corruption; Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro condemns US President Barack Obama IANS, HAVANA

uba gave its “unconditional support” to Venezuela this week following Washington’s declaration of a “national emergency” due to the “extraordinary risk” that the situation in Venezuela signifies for the security of the US. “No one has the right to intervene in the internal affairs of a sovereign state nor to declare it, without any basis, a threat to its national security,” the government said in a statement posted on the web page of Communist Party daily Granma. described as “arbitrary and aggressive” the order issued by US President Barack Obama, which he considers a “reprisal for the measures adopted (by Venezuela) in defense of its sovereignty against the interference of government authorities and of the United States Congress.” President Nicolas Maduro asked Venezuela’s parliament for special powers to defend “the integrity” of the nation as a result of the US statement, which has also imposed new sanctions on high-ranking government officials for alleged human rights violations. “How does Venezuela threaten the United States? At a distance of thousands of kilometers, without
strategic weapons and without using resources or staff to conspire against the constitutional order of the United States, the statement does not sound very believable and exposes the purpose of those who make it,” the note said. Separately, retired Cuban leader Fidel Castro congratulated Maduro for his “brilliant and courageous” speech against the “brutal plans” of the US against his country. “Dear Nicolas Maduro, president of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela: I congratulate you for your brilliant and courageous speech against the brutal plans of the United States government,” the 88-yearold Fidel said in a note.

over 65,000 in the late 1980s, the number of nuclear warheads has dropped significantly to a little over 10,000, but more countries now possess them, it shows. According to the infographic, the United States and Russia both have about 5,000 weapons each. France has 300, China 250, the
United Kingdom 225 and Israel 80. North Korea has only conducted nuclear tests in 2006, 2009 and 2013. “I don’t think people truly understand just how many of these weapons there are in the world,” said Rachel Bronson, executive director of the Bulletin. “The Interactive is a way to see,
immediately, who has nuclear weapons and when they got them, and how those numbers relate to each other. It is a startling experience, looking at those comparisons.” The authors of the Nuclear Notebook are Hans M. Kristensen and Robert S. Norris, both with the Federation of American Scientists. In the most recent edition of the Nuclear Notebook, the authors discuss the Notebook’s 28 year history and describe how sometimes host countries learned of foreign nuclear weapons on their soil from the Nuclear Notebook. Over 28 years of weapons analysis, the Nuclear Notebook column has revealed surprise nuclear activity and spot-on arsenal estimates while becoming a daily resource for scholars, activists and journalists.

ICC World Cup 2015
From nobody to somebody!
Guided by Shikhar Dhawan’s dominating century, India’s smooth eight-wicket victory over Ireland ensured that the defending World Champions will finish at the top of Pool B VETURI SRIVATSA, NEW DELHI
W
here does one put one’s finger on for India staying unbeaten, winning all their five Pool B matches in the World Cup? For once, answers are easy. The major achievement is that the Indians bowled the opposition out in all matches with allround performances. The batsmen gave enough for the bowlers to buy their wickets with their craft and when asked to bowl first the bowlers made it easy for batsmen. They complemented each other so wonderfully well. Their winning streak goes back to the 2011 World Cup when they won the last four matches to win it and adding the five now Mahendra Singh Dhoni has overtaken Saurav Ganguly as the most successful captain. Ganguly had a marvelous run of eight straight victories in the 2003 edition in South Africa before losing the final against Australia. Just before this World Cup, even the most ardent Indian fan was unwilling to wager on his country making the semifinals, let alone winning it. It all changed so quickly. Just as well, India played the two toughest sides in the first two matches and beat both Pakistan and South Africa unexpectedly by big margins. From then on no looking back, the fight the West Indies put up was not even a hiccup, a mere pinprick. All of a sudden, Dhoni looks invincible, even to those who were baying for his blood not long ago. His critics now say that he is a master limited-overs captain even if he is no longer the Captain Cool in Tests. He was hounded out of Test arena. Just as well, perhaps, a lot of burden is off his back and he seems
Indian skipper MS Dhoni.
Our bowlers have really stepped up: Dhoni Shikhar Dhawan celebrates his century against Ireland at the Seddon Park in Hamilton, New Zealand. (Photo: IANS)
to be enjoying the shorter versions of the game. When most teams are still trying to get the right mix, trying out the bench strength, the Indians stuck to their winning combination. They did not tinker with the batting order, not even against Ireland after Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma put on a 174-run opening partnership. When the top order failed to come good against the West Indies, Dhoni put his hand up nursing lower-order Ravichandran Ashwin to win the game by four wickets. Ironically, Ireland’s 259 is the highest score by a team scored against India. Big guns Pakistan, South Africa and the West Indies struggled to negotiate the pace as well as spin of the Indians. Still, India won with plenty to spare, both wickets and overs.
Bowlers are rarely given credit for their performance; cricket is all batsmen flaying about. Seldom do the Indian fast bowlers look so lethal and the spinners tantalisingly mesmeric together. And to back them up, outcricket has been so excellent, with fielders diving left, right and centre to reach half chances and to cut off runs. Notwithstanding a couple of catches being grassed or bubbled here and there in their eagerness. Umesh Yadav and Mohammed Shami are metered among the best at 145 plus kmph and third seamer Mohit Sharma’s deceptive pace and his back of the hand slower one made life difficult for batsmen. Remarkably, all three pacemen are proving they not only have safe hands but also a good arm, effecting run-outs from the deep. The
HAMILTON: Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni said that it has been a remarkable difference how the Indian bowlers have stepped on the gas in the cricket World Cup as they bowled out a team for the fifth consecutive time in as many matches in the ongoing tournament. After a disastrous Test and triseries against Australia and England, the bowlers faced a lot of criticism as they failed to pick up wickets regularly. But they turned the tide in the quadrennial event. On March 10 in a Pool
three bowled and fielded so well against Pakistan and South Africa, the Indian think-tank must have felt like finding a goldmine in the very first dig. They did not have to think of fiddling with the eleven thereafter. India have to play Zimbabwe in their last pool game at Auckland on March 14. Ireland and Zimbab-
B match, Ireland were bowled out for 259 in 49 overs. “One of the coaches was telling me (about India taking 50 wickets in last five matches). It’s a good stat to have. It means the bowlers are really doing the job for us. It’s a remarkable difference, they’ve really stepped up,” Dhoni said at the post-match presentation ceremony. “Not just the three fast bowlers, the spinners as well, and whenever we’ve had to use part-timers they’ve done a good job.”
we have done enough to rattle the mighty. It is to be seen whether the Indians will at least rest a couple of key fast bowlers so that they can be fresh for the knockout rounds or carry on with the same eleven. Now everyone is talking about India and the others as challengers. What a transformation from almost nobody to somebody!
Unbelievably disappointing to be knocked out: England skipper IANS, ADELAIDE
A
dejected England skipper Eoin Morgan said it is “unbelievably disappointing” that they crashed out of the World Cup after losing to Bangladesh in their fifth World Cup Pool A game at the Adelaide Oval. Needing a win to stay alive in the contest, England began well with both bat and ball but lost the game by a mere 15-run margin. “Pretty poor to be knocked out this early from a World Cup. Unbelievably disappointing. We bowled reasonably well, but we couldn’t quite match it up with
the bat. I can’t pick where it went wrong. I am gutted at the moment,” said Morgan who once again failed to get off the mark. Chasing a formidable total of 275 for seven, England were bowled out in the penultimate over of the match as Bangladesh medium pacer Rubel Hossain (4/53) clean bowled tail-ender James Anderson with a yorker. The skipper said his team tried addressing the problems but could not rectify them. He added he don’t know what is in store for the future but they will definitely look back at the performances and ponder on what went wrong.
Fans cheer in Dhaka after their team defeated England. England had been knocked out of the World Cup in the group stage. (Photo: IANS)
“It ultimately comes down to the performance, and some of them did, but not all of us as a unit. We have tried to address the problem, but obviously it hasn’t worked. Our expectations were higher than the way we performed, so it is obviously disappointing,” he said. “No idea what will happen from here. Again, there will be an inquest over the next few weeks to see what went wrong, and then we will go from there,” he added. In their last inconsequential group game England will face minnows Afghanistan at the Sydney Cricket Ground on March 13.

AAP chasm gets wider Turmoil in Aam Aadmi Party refuses to die down as a faction bays for the heads of Yogendra Yadav and Prashant Bhushan; senior leader Anjali Damania quits IANS, NEW DELHI
I am being targeted: Mayank Gandhi
T
he AAP crisis worsened this week, with four leaders known to be close to party chief Arvind Kejriwal accusing senior colleagues Yogendra Yadav and Prashant Bhushan of having attempted the party’s defeat in the Delhi assembly polls. The allegation was levelled in a statement by deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia, minister Gopal Rai and two other Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders Pankaj Gupta and Sanjay Singh. It prompted Yadav to say that he hoped the charge would lead to an “open, transparent dialogue” for the truth to prevail. Prashant Bhushan said: “Time has come for the country to know the whole truth about the matter and the truth will come out soon.” In a joint statement, the four leaders on March 10 said the AAP National Executive decided on March 4 to “release” Bhushan and Yadav from the Political Affairs Committee (PAC) and assign them new responsibilities. “While all workers were struggling to ensure the party’s victory, the trio — Prashant Bhushan, Yogendra Yadav and Shanti

Shanti Bhushan is Prashant Bhushan’s father and also a leading advocate.
“But the manner in which an atmosphere has been created that the National Executive was undemocratic and irresponsible, and the questions raised in the minds of the AAP activists, we are compelled to give this explanation,” the statement added. Yadav, welcoming the four AAP leaders’ statement, said he hoped that it would “end all slander”. “I welcome the statement by the four colleagues. Begins the possibility of open, transparent dialogue.
MUMBAI: Senior AAP leader Mayank Gandhi complained of being targeted by a section of his party for challenging a gag order on March 5 and also revealing about the proceedings of the AAP national executive meet. Gandhi claimed a “concerted attempt” was being made in the social media to label him “anti-party and antiAK (Arvind Kejriwal)” and reiterated
Truth shall prevail,” Yadav tweeted. “Hope this statement ends all slander, planting of allegations. Hope no more coercion of party functionaries and Delhi MLAs on this issue,” he added. Yadav said he hoped that his and Prashant Bhushan’s responses would also be duly publicized by the party media.
his statement that a price might have to be paid (by him). “A small group of party decision makers in Delhi has already removed me from the informal BBM group. Attacks have begun against me from AAP leader Ashish Khetan and others. Some dissatisfied members from Maharashtra have started giving interviews against me, some old cases are being re-opened,” Gandhi said in a blog. “More will come and I will be finally humiliated so much that I will quit. That was what was planned for Yogendra Yadav and Prashant Bhushan, but they overturned the plan by staying in the party. “Let me see if I can withstand the muck that will be thrown,” Gandhi said, expressing apprehensions.
Meanwhile, senior Aam Aadmi Party leader from Maharashtra, Anjali Damania on quit the party on March 11. “I quit.. I have not come into AAP for this nonsense,” she tweeted. Referring to party chief Arvind Kejriwal, she said: “I believed him.. I backed Arvind for principles not horse-trading.”

‘Dirty Politics’ - giving politicians a bad name
T
he pot-bellied grotesque politician from Rajasthan used to be the face of politics in India at a time when the Chautalas were doing their ‘ghotalas’. With a new crop of smarter netas, hopefully less susceptible to corruption, the era of the ‘bad’ politician seems blessedly behind us. And that’s precisely why producer-director K.C. Bokadia’s ‘dirty’ look at the filth in Indian politics is hopelessly outdated. This is the murky Machiavellian world of Prakash Jha’s politicians stuck in a time-warp. Denuded of all intellectual sensibility, it harks back to the 1970s when netajis in our films were so caricatural that they belonged to

cartoons in vernacular newspapers. Om Puri plays his role of the lecherous politician with lip-smacking
relish. Like a diabetic man whose wife is away to her mother’s house, while he gorges on forbidden junk food. This is junk food for the audience that believes cinema is about seductive heroines, lascivious villains, loud over-punctuated background music, camera angles and cinematography that seem to adhere to
the gimmicky treatment, like an annoying snivelling child clinging to its mother’s bosom. Reduced to the indignity of playing a lecherous over-libidinous politician who has the hots for an ambitious siren, Om Puri does what he can, given the constraints of a corny script that relies on sleaze and shock value to get our attention. Other talented actors like Naseeruddin Shah (playing an honest journalist stuck with a daughter whom the politicians kidnap), Anupam Kher (playing a straight-faced honest CBI officer), and Ashutosh Rana (very effective as Om Puri’s right hand man) Aseem, seem to be in it for fun. —Subhash K. ALLAS . TX – The police in Dallas say they suspect a shooting that killed a 36-yearold man taking pictures was
random. The man was shot outside the door of his northeast Dallas apartment as he photographed the snow just before midnight on March 4 in the 9900 block of Walnut Road. While the police say the shooting could be random, some residents in the area and the North Texas chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) say they aren’t so sure. “Because of recent incidents targeting American Muslims, including the murder of three young Muslims in North Carolina, we urge law enforcement authorities to address community concerns about a motive in this case,” said CAIR-DFW Executive Director Alia Salem. The Dallas police say the victim’s wife called 911 to report the shooting of her husband, Ahmed Al-Jamaili. The fatal shots rang out during the peak of the storm. Several cars parked in the apartment complex were hit, including a truck that was struck with eight bullets. The owner of the truck said he heard about a dozen shots. “I don’t care about the truck because you can buy another one or repair, but the life of the guy, you can’t repair the guy,” said Jose Ortiz, the truck owner. “He’s not coming back.” Ortiz said that’s not the first time he’s heard gunfire in the area. He said he plans on moving out with his wife and kids within the next week.

Eliezer Ministry of Matrimony for Telugu Christians BY A STAFF WRITER
O
AK PARK, IL – The Eliezer Ministry of Matrimony for Telugu Christians event was held on February 21 at India Methodist Telugu Church Oak Park, Illinois. A number of pastors, Bishop and Archbishop of Chicagoland area graced the event, spoke and prayed on the occasion. Bro. Prabhudas Bhooshi said that the ministry would strive to bring youths in the Telugu community to a platform by organizing youth meetings frequently, to be followed by a ‘meet and greet’ to know each other and subsequently leading to the marriages which should take place among the youth who are settled

in the US. Eliezer ministry started in Chicago is similar to that of the ministry at the well where people with honest intentions come together to help each other by helping the young ones in the process of finding their life-partners of their future. The elders and the pastors of the Telugu community are willing and exultant to carry out this ministry by the grace of God under the guidance and leadership of Prabhudas Bhooshi and Johnson Sukka. Eliezer ministry, based on the principles of Holy Scriptures, is aimed at being an asset to the community that can be available for all Telugu or Indian young (and unmarried) people who are seriously looking for the life-partners.

GLENBARD NORTH HIGH SCHOOL HAS INDIA NIGHT
SUNIL MUNGEE’S MUSIC WEAVES A MAGIC SPELL
BY A STAFF WRITER
C
AROL STREAM (IL) -- Glenbard North High School’s Indian Student Association (ISA) hosted its seventh annual India Night. The show, one of the largest high school cultural shows in all of Illinois, was held at Glenbard North High School on February 27 and 28. The theme for India Night 2015 was “A Suitable Ladka” which told the story of a mother trying to find the right boy for her daughter to marry. A palpable tension was present throughout the script as tradition and modernity clashed. In the end, however, a beautiful love story emerged that demonstrated that you don’t have to choose one over the other. The show included singing, dancing, acting and a fashion show. Dances included garba, Bollywood modern, Bollywood fFilmi, Bollywood oldies, Teacher’s Dance, Boy’s Dance, fusion, Bharatanatyam/Kathak, Bhangra, Raas, and the Final Dance. “ISA not only brings students together, it brings people together. It creates a community
S
of support that exceeds a two night show and it teaches students pride and the confidence to challenge things they originally thought impossible.” said Allyson Feierberg. “Most people think the Glenbard North India Night show limits its members to the dancing they do on stage. But the true outcome isn’t just the unique cultural show the audience gets to witness; rather, it is the sense of responsibility, dedication, and leadership that each member develops.” said
BY A STAFF WRITER
Vivek Patel. “I joined ISA as a medium to make friends and get involved in the school. After 4-5 months of being part of this wonderful organization, I didn’t make friends, but found myself a new family. ISA is an organization that unifies all different groups of students into a canopy of beautiful Indian culture. ISA helped me to break away from the shell I was concealing myself in, and carved me into a better individual.” said Shrey Maheshwari.
celebrities--very carefully.
And piloting this crazy ride is none other than Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan who will be flooring his fans with his wit and charm while helping the contestants with his friendly hand. Joining him on stage is Siddharth Basu, producer of the show. India Poochega Sabse Shaana Kaun airs from March 14 Monday to Friday 9:30p ET only on ZEE TV. Are you ready to flaunt your shaanpati?

Breathing exercises good for obese women
Have a sense of purpose in life! A high sense of purpose is associated with a 23 pc reduction in death from all causes and a 19 pc reduced risk of heart attack IANS, NEW YORK

Previous research has linked purpose to psychological health and well-being. However, the new study found that a high sense of purpose is associated with a 23 percent reduction in death from all causes and a 19 percent reduced risk of heart attack, stroke, or the need for coronary artery bypass surgery. “Our study shows there is a strong relationship between having a sense of purpose in life and
aving a high sense of purpose in life may lower your risk of heart disease and stroke, new study says. The new analysis defined purpose in life as a sense of meaning and direction, and a feeling that life is worth living. “Developing and refining your sense of purpose could protect your heart, health and potentially save your life,” said study lead author Randy Cohen, a preventive cardiologist at Mount Sinai St. ‘You need to Luke's and Mount work toward the Sinai Roosevelt. important goal
of obtaining one for your overall well- being’
protection from dying or having a cardiovascular event. “As part of our overall health, each of us needs to ask ourselves the critical question of ‘do I have a sense of purpose in my life?’ “If not, you need to work toward the important goal of obtaining one for your overall well-being,” Cohen explained. The research team reviewed 10 studies with the data of more than 137,000 people to analyse the impact of sense of purpose on death rates and risk of cardiovascular events. The meta-analysis also found that those with a low sense of purpose are more likely to experience cardiovascular events.
NEW YORK: Breathing exercises could help obese women reduce stress and blood glucose levels, new research has found. Develop by University of Massachusetts' Medical School researcher Jon Kabat-Zinn, mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) treatment has been found to decrease fasting glucose and improve quality of life in overweight and obese women. The practice of MBSR involves paying attention to one's thoughts, feelings, and bodily sensations in the present moment in a nonjudgmental and non-reactive manner through mindfulness exercises such as breathing awareness.
“MBSR significantly reduces fasting glucose and improves quality of life without changing body weight or insulin resistance,” said Nazia Raja-Khan, assistant professor of medicine, obstetrics and gynecologys at the Penn State College of Medicine in the US. Increased mindfulness and reduced stress may lead to physiological changes in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and/or sympathetic nervous system that result in lower glucose levels, she added. “In overweight and obese women, stress may contribute to increased diabetes and cardiovascular disease,” Raja-Khan said.

en with low levels of testosterone have higher rates of depression and depressive symptoms than the general population, new research says. “This study found that men seeking management for borderline testosterone have a very high rate of depression, depressive symptoms, obesity and physical inactivity,” said principal study author Michael Irwig, associate professor at George Washington University. “Clinicians need to be aware of the clinical characteristics of
this sample population and manage their comorbidities such as depression and obesity,” Irwig noted. The researchers studied 200 adult men between 20 and 77 years of age whose testosterone levels were borderline (between 200 and 350 nanograms per deciliter). They remeasured the men's total testosterone and assessed depression from their medical history and depressive symptoms with the validated Patient Health Questionnaire 9 (PHQ-9). The study found that 56 percent of the study participants had significant depressive symptoms.
Your week ahead... Aries Aries, the general thrust seems to be more space, freedom and independence, though. Stick to that, and all will be well, no matter how bumpy the road is from here to April.
Taurus Until you are actually free, you have no idea what freedom feels like, at the deepest levels. Between now and April, freedom will come in waves, affecting how much space you feel you have with a secret you are covering up.
Gemini Anyone trying to hang onto the past this week will be stranded by time, because March and April are months when your friendships, social life, social media and group involvements must be revolutionized.
Cancer Cancer, your career, business, special subject area or chosen industry is obviously long overdue for change, as are you – but it is unlikely to be gradual or particularly comfortable.
Leo How many layers can you make work in a relationship? How fast and hard should you proceed? Near Wednesday in particular you need to look at what really happens when the world turns upside-down around you.
Virgo Virgo, you are in the slow process of forming a completely different relationship with money – and everything that it purchases – from company shares to houses, precious possessions, debt repayment or apartments.
(March 9-15) Libra Libra, now – more than ever – you need to be your own person in the game of partnership. Also in those other games that modern life brings, like relating to former partners, or simply pursuing potential new lovers.
Scorpio This week’s electrifying horoscope patterns suggest that you simply won’t care. What a brave new world that has such creatures in it! That line from The Tempest echoes the astrological weather near Wednesday too.
Sagittarius Sagittarius, you are now free to make things up as you go along, with babies, children or young adults. This also applies to intimate relationships with lovers. You can pursue this new freedom in a random way.
Capricorn Capricorn, you just don’t see your home, family, home town or homeland as you did, before 2010. In fact, you can never go back, given the massive leaps you have made in your notion of ‘belonging’ and ‘security’ in the last five years. J
Aquarius Separating yourself from what ‘should’ happen with the media, publishing, the written word, public speaking, singing and so on – has truly served you. You have broken new ground since 2010.
Pisces Pisces, your approach to money, property, charity, business, buying or selling has been a revelation to people in the last few years and you have probably surprised yourself as well. —Jessica Adams
