Trump moves to ban foreign telecom gear The order to ban transactions posing an unacceptable risk came amid trade war between the US and China IANS, WASHINGTON

U

S President Donald Trump has moved to ban American telecom firms from installing foreign-made equipment that could pose a threat to national security, White House officials said, stepping up a battle against China by effectively barring sales by Huawei, the countrys leading networking company. On Wednesday, Trump issued an executive order instructing Commerce Secretary, Wilbur Ross, to ban transactions “posing an unacceptable risk” but did not single out any nation or company, The New York Times reported. The order came amid an escalating trade war between the US and China, with the two sides imposing hundreds of billions of dollars of tariffs. Trump has accused the Chinese government of unfair trade practices and announced increased tariffs on an additional $200 billion worth of Chinese goods that went

Trump Jr’s Senate subpoena ‘unfair’ WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump said that it was “very unfair” for the Senate Intelligence Committee to subpoena his eldest son, Donald Trump Jr, to testify for a second time about alleged Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. “It’s really a tough situation because my son spent I guess over 20 hours testifying about something that (special counsel Robert) Mueller said was 100 per cent OK,” Xinhua quoted Trump as saying to reporters on Tuesday. “And now they want him to testify again. I don’t know why. I have no idea why. But it seems very unfair to me,” he said. The US President spoke as a news report emerged on Tuesday stating that Trump Jr backed out of two scheduled interviews with the Republican-controlled Senate panel before it issued a subpoena forcing him to appear. Trump said last week that he was “very surprised” to learn of the subpoena and defended his son as a “good person” who “works very hard” and would be distracted by having to testify again. —IANS

End ‘unfriendly’ practices against Huawei: China to US BEIJING: China on Thursday urged the US to stop “harassing overseas companies” and slammed US President Donald Trump’s decision to sign a national emergency order that prohibits American firms from using foreign-made equipment, citing espionage fears. The US move, which effectively takes aim at Chinese telecom giant Huawei, comes as the two economic superpowers are locked in a bitter unending trade war. “Nobody sees this move as con-

into force on May 10. The executive order was “agnostic”, White House officials said in a call with reporters, declining to single out China as the focus. “This administration will do

structive or friendly and we urge US to stop using such practices,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lu Kang told reporters. Lu said China opposes countries that create problems using national security as an excuse. “When Chinese companies are wrongly treated, China has the right to take necessary measures to safeguard its legitimate rights and interests,” the spokesperson said, adding that his country “always asks its companies to comply by local laws”.

Sarah Huckabee Sanders, said in a statement. But in a clear strike against Huawei, the Commerce Department separately announced on Wednesday that it had placed the company and its dozens of affiliates on a list of firms deemed a risk to national security. The listing will prevent it from buying American parts and technologies without seeking US government approval.

“This will prevent American technology from being used by foreign owned entities in ways that potentially undermine US national security or foreign policy interests,” Ross said in a statement. The Commerce Department will also write the rules for reviewing transactions that fall under the executive order’s ban over the next 150 days, according to administration officials.

Venezuela political crisis: US suspends flights IANS, WASHINGTON

T

he US Department of Homeland Security has announced the “immediate suspension” of commercial passenger and cargo flights between the US and Venezuela. “Acting Secretary of Homeland Security Kevin K McAleenan determined that conditions in Venezuela threaten the safety and security of passengers, aircraft, and crew,” Efe news quoted the department as saying on Wednesday.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo assented to the suspension of flights based on McAleenan’s finding, while implementation of

the measure is in the hands of the Department of Transportation. “This determination is based on the ongoing political instability

and increased tensions in Venezuela and associated inadvertent risk to flight operations,” according to the statement from Homeland Security. The suspension will remain in effect until US officials deem that conditions in Venezuela have changed sufficiently to accommodate the resumption of flights, Homeland Security said. American Airlines, the last major US carrier providing scheduled service to and from Venezuela, suspended flights indefinitely on March 28.

N. Korea demands release of cargo ship seized by US IANS, SEOUL

N

orth Korea on Tuesday demanded that the US should release a cargo ship seized on suspicions of violating UN sanctions, denouncing the seizure as an “outright denial” of the spirit of last year’s first summit between leader Kim Jong-un and American President Donald Trump. “The latest US act constitutes an extension of the American method of calculation for bringing North

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un

Korea to its knees by means of ‘maximum pressure’ and an outright denial of the underlying spir-

it of the June 12 Joint Statement that has committed to establish new bilateral relations,” Yonhap news agency quoted a spokesperson for the North Foreign Ministry as saying. “The US should ponder over the consequences its heinous act might have on the future developments and immediately return our ship,” the spokesperson said in a statement carried by the North’s official Korean Central News Agency. The North also said that the time when the “US held sway over

the world at its own free will is gone long ago, and it would be a biggest miscalculation if the US thought that North Korea is among the countries where the American-style logic of ‘strength might work for’. The US Justice Department said last week that the 17,061-ton Wise Honest, one of the North’s largest bulk carriers, was intercepted by Indonesian authorities last year after being loaded with coal in Nampo, North Korea, in violation of sanctions on the regime.

Gunfights rattle Kashmir

our militants, including a top Jaish-e-Mohammad commander, as well as a soldier and a civilian were killed and four others injured in three gunfights between security forces and militants across the Kashmir Valley on Thursday. In the first gunfight in Dalipora village of Pulwama district, three Jaish militants, including a top commander who had masterminded the 2017 attack on a CRPF camp, a soldier and a civilian were killed, police said. “The slain militants have been identified as two locals, Naseer Pandit and Umar Mir and Pakistani national Khalid Bhai. Khalid was a top JeM commander and had masterminded the 2017 attack on the CRPF camp in Lethpora in which five troopers were killed,” a police source said. The civilian victim was identified as Rayees Ahmad Dar, son of

Rahul meets Alwar gangrape victim JAIPUR: Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Thursday met the Alwar gang-rape victim, and promised her and the family of justice. Speaking to the media after the meeting in Thanagaazi, Gandhi said that this was an emotional issue for him and not a political one. “The victim will definitely get justice. Strict action will be taken against the accused. I have come here to meet the family and not to play any kind of politics. I will take action on whatever I have said here,” he said. “We can’t tolerate such things. As soon as I heard about the case, I called (Chief Minister Ashok) Gehlot. We want to give a strong message not only to the people of Rajasthan but to the entire nation so that such heinous incidents are not repeated anywhere.” Gandhi was accompanied by Gehlot, Deputy Chief Minister Sachin Pilot, party state incharge Avinash Pandey and Alwar Congress candidate, Jitendra Bhanwar Singh. Gandhi was slated to visit Alwar on Wednesday but the trip was cancelled due to bad weather. Before Gandhi’s visit, the family said that they would raise a demand for a job for the couple so that the victim and her husband can be sent to a place where no one identifies them. —IANS

the owner of the house where the militants were hiding. His brother, Muhammad Younis, sustained a gunshot injury. According to the sources, two soldiers were also injured in the exchange of firing. Giving details of the gunfight, a police statement said: “On a credi-

ble input, a cordon and search operation was launched today morning by police and security forces at Dalipora area. “As police and security forces were evacuating civilians from the neighborhood around the target house, the hiding terrorists fired indiscriminately. In the process,

one Army jawan, Sepoy Sandeep attained martyrdom and one civilian Rayees Dar also lost his life.” Security forces retaliated, killing three militants whose bodies were retrieved from the site, it said. “They were identified as Naseer Pandit of Kareemabad, Pulwama, Umar Mir of Shopian and from the incriminating material recovered from the site of encounter, one terrorist has been identified as a Pakistani, namely Khalid. “According to police records, the killed terrorists were affiliated with proscribed terror outfit JeM,” it said. The statement said that Khalid, “who was operating as commander of proscribed terror outfit JeM was involved in several terror attacks on security establishments and civilian atrocities in the area. Many terror crime cases were registered against him”. Amid massive clashes near the gunfight site and adjoining areas, authorities imposed curfew in Pulwama town and suspended mobile

internet services. Mobile internet speed was also reduced in Srinagar city to prevent uploading of inflammatory pictures and posts. In another gunfight in Handew village of Shopian district, a militant was killed while a soldier was injured. Police said firing exchanges have stopped but the search operation is still going on. Following specific information about the presence of militants, troops of the army’s counter-insurgency Rashtriya Rifles and the Special Operations Group of the state police launched a cordon and search operation in Handew village, but came under fire from the hiding militants and retaliated. The third gunfight took place in Kandi forest area of Kupwara district. Security forces surrounded the forest area after intelligence inputs about the presence of a group of militants there. Police said a brief shootout took place in Kandi forest area, but there was no report of any casualty.

Monsoon to arrive in India on June 6: IMD IANS, NEW DELHI

M

onsoon is expected to arrive in India on June 6, a delay of five days, but it is likely to be “near normal”, state forecaster India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Wednesday. This comes a day after private forecaster Skymet had said that monsoon was expected to arrive on June 4 and was likely to be mostly “below normal”, with 15 per cent chance of drought. The IMD had last month said that monsoon this year will be “near normal” — around 96 per cent of the Long Period Average

(LPA) of 887 mm. The average or normal rainfall in the country is defined between 96 per cent and 104 per cent of the 50-year average

for the entire four-month monsoon season. The Skymet, on the other hand, had said that monsoon was likely

to be “below normal” at 93 per cent of the LPA owing to developing El Nino in the Pacific Ocean, which posed higher risk of the eastern parts and major portion of Central India being rain deficient. The IMD has ruled out any adverse impact of El Nino on the monsoon such as erratic rainfall, saying that it will start weakening by June, thus ensuring that the country got normal rainfall, which will be beneficial to the farmers during the kharif season. El Nino is a sea surface temperature situation over Pacific Ocean that is said to have strong negative influence on Indian monsoon.

OPPOSITION ON SHAKY GROUND

There is no possibility of the opposition being able to come to a decision before May 23, the day of reckoning, as is known, there are far too many contenders for top post AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI

W

ith Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Ram Madhav now saying that his party will get a majority of its own in the Lok Sabha and not fall short of the requisite number as he had said earlier, the opposition will probably have to redouble its unity efforts. Madhav’s earlier comment had apparently galvanized the opposition parties to try yet again to come together. First off the block was Telangana chief minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao, who spoke to his counterparts in Kerala and Karnataka, Pinarayi Vijayan and H.D. Kumaraswamy to sound them on his ideas of forming a non-BJP, non-Congress front. However, he now seems to have become softer towards the Congress, presumably because both Kumaraswamy and Stalin have told him that they have earlier supported Rahul Gandhi’s claim to be the Prime Minister. After Rao’s endeavours, Andhra Pradesh’s N. Chandrababu Naidu has entered the fray with praise for Mamata Banerjee as a Bengal tigress. Non-BJP parties are scared that if they do not move quickly, then the BJP may use its status as the

UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi with Mayawati, Mamata Banerjee, Rahul Gandhi, N.Chandrababu Naidu, H.D. Kumaraswamy and others. (Photo: IANS)

largest party in the House — which is a certainty — to form a government by wooing allies from outside the National Democratic Front (NDA). The ever-active grapevine of Lutyens Delhi has it that Odisha chief minister Naveen Patnaik tops the list of such potential allies followed by YS Jagan Mohan Reddy

of the YSR Congress Party in Andhra Pradesh, who is on record for saying that he will support the BJP in a “hung” Parliament if it promises granting special status to his state. Ironically, Rao’s name was also mentioned in this context some time ago when it was felt that he was moving close to the BJP. But

that phase is apparently over. However, it is the belief among the opposition parties that the BJP may get the first chance to form a government, which has persuaded them to consider writing to the President, Ramnath Kovind, that they are ready to give letters of support for an alternative government. But such an assertion cannot be

made in general terms, for who will the President call to form a government in case he decides to give the largest alliance rather than the largest party the first opportunity? There is no possibility of the opposition being able to come to a decision before May 23, the day of reckoning. As is known, there are far too many contenders for the top post. While the Telangana Chief Minister wants someone from the south to be the PM - is Rao thinking of himself - Naidu seemingly has a preference for Mamata Banerjee although he has been equally friendly with Rahul Gandhi. The West Bengal Chief Minister herself is believed to nurture such ambitions if only at the behest of her party men who want a Bengali prime minister. Mayawati has also thrown her hat in the ring by saying that if she gets a chance to be the prime minister, she will stand for the parliamentary elections which she is not contesting at present. Her political “bhatija” (brother’s son), the Samajwadi Party’s Akhilesh Yadav, has backed her ally in the UP mahagathbandhan (grand alliance), for he wants a prime minister from UP. The present shaky gathbandhan has no one of such stature.

India is high tariff nation: Donald Trump India has been called out numerous times by the trump administration before for its tariffs and duties on imports AMIT KAPOOR, NEW DELHI

T

he Trump-driven trade war does not seem to relent. In the latest development, the US has raised tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese imports to 25 per cent, up from 10 per cent imposed last year. China, on its part, has threatened to retaliate. India has never been far from the skirmish. In fact, just a few days ago, US Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross accused India of following restrictive trade policies that create significant market access barriers for foreign companies. The evidence of this claim, according to him, lay in the fact that the US was India’s biggest export market, accounting for a fifth of its total

exports, while India was only the 13th largest market for American exports. India has been called out numerous times by the Trump administration before for its tariffs and duties on imports. In October last year, Trump himself dubbed India the tariff king’. In March, he even expressed his intent of ending the favourable treatment that India enjoyed under the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP), which allows many products from developing countries like India to enter the US duty-free. Although the decision to revoke the GSP has been postponed until after the new government comes into power in India, the trade war is beginning to impact the coun-

try more directly. The fact that has particularly irked Trump is the substantial trade deficit that the US has with India to the tune of $24.2 billion in 2018. The question, thus, remains whether there is any truth to the claims of Trump and Ross with respect to India’s tariff structure. There is no second opinion about the fact that India imposes high duties on many items of import - 150 per cent on whiskey and wines; about 75 per cent on automobiles; 50 per cent on mango juice and so on. However, India is not alone in doing so and, in fact, it is also not close to the highest tariffs charged by other countries in the global economy. As per the World Tariff Policies 2018 published by WTO, the

Donald Trump with Narendra Modi. (File photo: IANS)

highest tariff charged by some of the major economies are: 736 per cent by Japan, 807 per cent by South Korea, 350 per cent by the US, 163 per cent by Australia and 150 per cent by India. Merely looking at the highest tariff rate provides only a limited view to the country’s tariff structure. India’s average tariffs at 13.8 per cent turn out to be higher than most major trading

economies like China (9.8 per cent) and US (3.4 per cent). South Korea (13.7 per cent) is one of the few major economies that come close to India’s average tariffs. However, when the tariff rates are weighted by the volume of traded goods for a more accurate representation of imposed tariffs, the trade-weighted average tariffs for India fall to 7.6 per cent.

US pulls most staff from Iraq Amid increasing tensions with Iran, employees working in the US Embassy in Baghdad and the US Consulate in Erbil were instructed to leave Iraq IANS, WASHINGTON

Iran committed to nuclear agreement: FM Javad Zarif

T

he US State Department on Wednesday ordered the departure of nonemergency US government employees from Iraq amid increasing tensions with Iran and warned American citizens not to travel to the country, citing a “high risk for violence and kidnapping”. The announcement comes on the heels of Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s unannounced trip to Iraq where he said he spoke to officials about the country’s ability to protect Americans. The action also represents the latest manoeuvering by the Donald Trump administration in the Middle East, where the Pentagon has positioned a carrier strike group and a bomber task force, CNN reported. The department said in a statement that employees working in the US Embassy in Baghdad and the US Consulate in Erbil were instructed to leave Iraq and that “normal visa services will be temporarily suspended at both posts”. According to the statement,

Assange rape case: Sweden reopens probe STOCKHOLM: Swedish prosecutors on Monday reopened investigation into the rape allegation against WikiLeaks cofounder Julian Julian Assange Assange, currently lodged at a high-security jail in the UK. Sweden’s Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions Eva-Marie Persson announced the decision at a press conference here saying, “I have today taken the decision to reopen the preliminary investigation,” the Guardian reported Prosecutors dropped the investigation in 2017 because they were unable to proceed while Assange stayed put at the Ecuadorian embassy in London. The investigation could be reopened if the situation changed, they had said at that time. A lawyer for one of the women involved in the Swedish allegations subsequently asked for resumption of the investigation. Assange had also faced investigation for a second sex-related allegation, which was dropped in 2015 because time had run out. He has denied both allegations.

American Citizens Services employees who were working in the Embassy in Baghdad “will continue to provide consular services to US citizens in Basra”. The department said the sudden changes came due to the US government’s “ability to provide routine and emergency services to US citizens in Iraq is extremely limited” and that as a result, the threat of “terrorism, kidnapping and

armed conflict” aimed at Americans in the country was too great a risk. It added that Americans “should not travel through Iraq to Syria to engage in armed conflict” as they may face similar threats there and face “legal risks” from both Washington and Damascus. The orders from the State Department come a day after US Central Command, which oversees

TOKYO: Iran is committed to the 2015 nuclear agreement it signed with a group of world powers despite the withdrawal of the US from the landmark pact, the Gulf country’s Foreign Minister said on Thursday, calling the reimposing of the sanctions by Washington “unacceptable”. Mohammad Javad Zarif during a visit to Japan talked about the nuclear deal in a meeting with his Japanese counterpart Taro Kono and said that Tehran “did not intend to escalate tensions but if the country was under threat, it would respond to it and defend it”, Japanese state broadcaster NHK reported. Iran had signed the Joint Compre-

hensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) with six nations — the US, Russia, China, the UK, France and Germany — and the EU. Washington pulled out of the agreement in May 2018. Zarif urged the rest of the signatory countries that if the international community benefits from the historic agreement, it must be prepared to invest in it to stop the US from propagating illegality and anarchy, staterun Kyodo news agency reported. It said that Kono urged Iran to comply with its commitments in the pact following Tehran’s decision to suspend some of them in response to stricter sanctions imposed by the US. —IANS

May under pressure to set her departure date IANS, LONDON

U

K Prime Minister Theresa May will meet senior Conservative MPs later on Thursday who are demanding that she set a date for her departure from Downing Street, the media reported. The Prime Minister, who is under growing pressure from her own MPs to stand aside, will meet the executive of the backbench

1922 Committee — an elected body of MPs which represents backbenchers and also oversees leadership contests — to discuss her future, the BBC reported. Existing rules mean she cannot be formally challenged until December. In the meeting on Thursday, the senior Conservative MPs are expected to press her to set out her departure timetable, regardless of whether Parliament backs her

Brexit withdrawal agreement. After the talks with May, the executive will hold another meeting where changes to the leader-

ship rules could be discussed again. MP Peter Bone produced a letter from Conservative activists in the Commons on Wednesday, saying they had lost confidence in May and want her to resign before European elections on May 23. They view the deal that May has reached with the EU as “worse than staying in the European Union”, he said. May’s former chief of staff, Nick Timothy, writing in his Telegraph column, said the Prime Minister must “accept that the game is up”. She should “do her duty and stand aside” in order to avoid a “national humiliation” and save the Conservative Party, he said.

Sri Lanka: Over 1,000 refugees fear for safety amid violence IANS, COLOMBO

M

ore than 1,100 refugees and asylum seekers in Sri Lanka have been forced to flee their homes due to violent attacks on religious minorities following the Easter Sunday bombings and are living in precarious makeshift shelters in the country, Amnesty International said on Thursday. The refugees and asylum seekers “had hoped to find safety in Sri Lanka after fleeing the violence of bigoted mobs in their own countries. Now, they are faced with the

same fears that forced them here, leaving them unable to leave their shelters where they languish in dire conditions,” South Asia Director

at Amnesty International Biraj Patnaik said in a statement. Since the April 21 attacks on three churches, three luxury hotels

and two other locations that left over 250 people dead and hundreds wounded, tensions between the Muslim community and the Buddhist majority of the country have escalated. According to Amnesty, the refugees, many of whom are from Pakistan or Afghanistan, are temporarily living in overcrowded community centers and a police station. They lack proper places to sleep, clean and adequate sanitation facilities, access to medical attention to treat illnesses that have proliferated in the makeshift shelters, Amnesty said.

Notably, the plan would not change the overall number of immigrants allowed in the US legally, nor would it address the illegal immigration population, Politico news reported. Trump was set to deliver the broad outlines of the offering, drafted largely by the President’s son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner at the White House’s Rose Garden. Sikh Mayor shown as Arab dictator IANS, WASHINGTON

A

New Jersey-based website is under fire for publishing a photoshopped image of a Sikh Mayor that depicts him as an Arab dictator, the media reported. The website, “Hudson Mile Square View”, ran an image of Hoboken Mayor Ravi Bhalla that resembled the lead character played by British actor Sacha Baron Cohen in the comedy film

“The Dictator”, the American Bazaar reported on Tuesday. The photo was part of a story titled, “Ravi Bhalla goes to the mattresses... for his tax increase”. It accused Bhalla of “summoning all the powers” of his office to “reinstitute a tax increase” that was not approved by the city council. According to the website, Bhalla had proposed a 3 per cent tax increase but the council slashed it to 1 per cent. The story said now

zine. A senior administration official said Trump would use the plan as a tool in the election if Democrats do not “engage” with the administration. “It’s going to be a very detailed piece of legislation, and it can be what they want it to be,” the official said. “If they don’t want to engage, then it will be part of the election. If they want to engage, then it could be part of a negotiation. That’s going to be up to them.” It was not however, immediately clear if Democrats were given a heads-up on the proposal. “They haven’t even talked to Democrats,” Politico quoted Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer as saying on Wednesday. Schumer said the President had solicited his opinion on the subject several weeks ago but had not followed through. Community speaker and activist Simran Jeet Singh tweeted on Tuesday: “Ravi Bhalla is the firstever turbaned Sikh elected as Mayor in US history. “He’s endured immense racist abuse, from flyers calling him a terrorist to death threats against him and his family. Now, someone is photoshopping Ravi to depict him as a despot. This is racist and wrong.” The website said that the image was submitted by a reader. However, the Mile Square View had used a similar photo of Bhalla last August, the American Bazaar said. The site has a history of using photoshopped images of the Mayor. In February 2017, it posted a photo of Bhalla with a “Pinocchio” nose.

55-year-old Indian-origin woman has been convicted by a jury in the US of strangling her 9-year-old stepdaughter to death in 2016 and faces life in prison at her sentencing next month. Shamdai Arjun of Queens, New York, was found guilty of seconddegree murder for strangling her stepdaughter Ashdeep Kaur in a bathtub. It took a jury less an hour to convict the woman, who now faces 25 years to life in prison at her sentencing on June 3, CBS New York reported. the hands of her stepmother. “This is a horrifying case of a defenceless 9-year-old child, who

was to be cared for by her stepmother but was instead strangled to death by her,” said Acting Queens District Attorney John M. Ryan on Monday. “Her actions are truly incomprehensible and deserve the maximum punishment allowed under the law.” According to trial testimony, Arjun left her home in the Richmond Hill section of Queens on August 19, 2016 around 5.30 p.m. with her former husband and two grandchildren, ages 3 and 5. Asked about the 9-year-old victim’s whereabouts, she told an eyewitness that the child was in the bathroom and was waiting for her father to pick her up.

Mumbai Indians lift 4rth IPL

MI defeat bitter rivals Chennai Super Kings by one run to lift a record 4rth Indian Premier League (IPL) title in a rip-roaring final in Hyderabad Brief scores:

IANS, HYDERABAD

L

asith Malinga delivered the killer blow as Mumbai Indians (MI) defeated bitter rivals Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by one run to lift a record fourth Indian Premier League (IPL) title in a rip-roaring final at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium here. With two runs needed off the final delivery, Malinga executed a slower yorker to perfection, trapping Shardul Thakur (2) right in front to send his teammates, including skipper Rohit Sharma, into delirium as Shane Watson, whose breathtaking 80 went in vain, sunk in his seat in the Chennai dugout. Chasing a modest 150 for victory, Watson, who was dropped on 56 by Rahul Chahar, carried Chennai’s hopes with a belligerent 80 off 59 balls, his innings laced

Mumbai Indians: 149/8 in 20 overs (Kieron Pollard 41 not out, Quinton de Kock 29; Deepak Chahar 3/26, Imran Tahir 2/23); Chennai Super Kings: 148/7 in 20 overs (Shane Watson 80, Jasprit Bumrah 2/14)

with eight fours and four sixes. But once he was run out in the fourth ball of the final over, it was Sri Lankan Malinga who showed his class to snatch the crown from the defending champions. In the last five overs, Chennai

needed 62 off 30 balls. Watson then hit Malinga for a hat-trick of fours to trim the equation to 42 off 24 balls. There was no stopping the veteran Australian, who scored a hundred in the final to help Chennai

win the IPL last year, as he clobbered Krunal Pandya for three back-to-back sixes in the 18th over which cost Mumbai 20 runs. Mumbai’s best bowler Jasprit Bumrah (2/14) then bowled a brilliant penultimate over, sending Bravo (15) back in the hut after the latter gave Quinton de a simple catch behind the stumps. However, de Kock missed an easy gathering to gift Chennai four byes in the last ball of the over. Earlier, Faf du Plessis (26) and Watson gave Chennai a steady start before Krunal got the former stumped by de Kock by luring him

to come down the wicket. With du Plessis gone for 26 off 13, Watson and Suresh Raina (8) shared a 37-run stand for the second wicket as Chennai looked to be cruising. Rohit then gave the ball to Rahul Chahar (1/14) who started Chennai’s downfall by trapping Raina (8) in front. Ambati Rayudu (1) could not add much to the tally, getting caught behind off Bumrah. The game-changing moment came in the 13th over when M.S. Dhoni (2) was caught short of the crease by Ishan Kishan, with replays showing it to be a close call. Watson and Bravo then joined hands for a 51-run partnership for the fifth wicket which was finally broken by Bumrah. From there on, it was a see-saw battle which eventually saw Mumbai continue their dominance over Chennai in what was their fourth final meeting.

Pant was not included in the 15member World Cup squad with stumper-batsman Dinesh Karthik getting the nod of the selectors. But the 21-year old had a good outing in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for Delhi Capitals and had played a pivotal role in helping the team reach their first playoffs since 2012. “India will miss Rishab Pant at the World Cup,” said Ganguly, who was also Delhi Capitals’ advisor. Asked if he should be drafted in with Kedar Jadhav injured, Ganguly said: “You can’t say like that. I hope

Kedar gets fit, but Pant will be missed.” Asked if he should be drafted in with Kedar Jadhav injured, Ganguly said: “You can’t say like that. EC cuts short campaign in Bengal

In the wake of violence in Bengal, the Election Commission takes unprecedented step; Mamata says decision taken on the direction of the BJP

EC decision taken at BJP’s direction: Mamata

IANS, NEW DELHI

I

n the wake of violence in West Bengal, the Election Commission on Wednesday took an unprecedented step of curtailing poll campaign in the state by a day as it ordered stoppage of electioneering from 10 pm on Thursday on the remaining 9 Lok Sabha constituencies going to the polls on May 19. The Election Commission also removed with immediate effect the state’s Principal Secretary (Home) Atri Bhattacharya for “having interfered” in the poll process and relieved controversial IPS officer Rajeev Kumar from his post of ADG CID, with orders to report for duty in the Union Home Ministry in New Delhi tomorrow at 10 am. The poll body invoked for the first time Article 324 of the Constitution which gives it special powers to control and give directions for holding elections. There will be no election campaign in 9 Parliamentary constituencies of West Bengal from 10 pm tomorrow till the conclusion of polls on May 19, an EC official said at a press conference. The campaigning would have normally ended at 5 p.m. on Friday along with 50 other seats across 6 other states and one Union Territory.

The decisions have been “taken as an action on violence in West Bengal on Tuesday,” the EC official said, about the action taken a day after widespread violence witnessed in the state during a road show conducted by BJP President Amit Shah. The constituencies — Dum Dum, Barasat, Basirhat, Jaynagar, Mathurapur, Diamond Harbour, Jadavpur, Kolkata (South) and Kolkata (North) — are going to the polls in the 7th and last phase of the elections on May 19. “This is probably the first time that ECI has invoked Article 324 in this manner but it may not be the last in case of repetition of lawlessness and violence which vitiate the

conduct of polls,” the official said. The official said the decisions were taken “keeping in view the recent developments in West Bengal, especially during the last 24 hours, representations received from political parties, report of DEC in charge of West Bengal in ECI and the joint report of Special Observers Ajay Nayak, IAS (Retd.) and Vivek Dube, IPS (Retd.).” He said the campaigning has been curtailed to ensure free, fair, transparent and ethical elections during the 7th phase on May 19. “The Commission hereby directs that no person shall convene, hold, join or address any public meeting or procession in connection with election or display to the public any election matter

KOLKATA: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday said the Election Commission’s decisions to curtail election campaigning and remove two senior officers have been taken on the direction of the BJP, its President Amit Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. She also claimed that RSS people have been inducted into the Election Commission. Mamata wondered if the directives were due to the “threat” issued to the poll panel by Shah during a media meet in New Delhi on Wednesday morning. Addressing a media meet here, the Chief Minister said: “Some emergency situation has arisen due to some directions of the Election Commission. I don’t consider these

by means of cinematograph, television or other similar apparatus or propagate any election matter to the public by holding or by arranging any musical concert or any theatrical performance or any other entertainment or amusement with a view to attracting the member of the public in connection with these elections,” the poll body said. It also ordered that no spirituous, fermented and intoxicating liquors or other substances of a like nature shall be sold given or dis-

as EC’s decision. These have been taken as per the direction of the BJP, Modi and Amit Shah.” “In the morning, Shah held a press conference in Delhi, where he threatened the Election Commission. “Is this a fallout of that?” she asked. Banerjee said Bengal was being targeted as Modi knew that she was challenging him. “I am challenging him, talking against him, we are countering him on every point. Modi is afraid of Bengal, afraid of me.” Banerjee said she had remained mum despite so many incidents that occurred during the election proess. “With due respect, I tell the Election Commission that so many incidents have happened, I did not utter a single word.” —IANS

tributed at a hotel, eating house, shops or any other place public or private within polling areas in nine parliamentary constituencies. “Election Commission of India is deeply anguished at the vandalism done to the statue of respected late Shri Ishwar Chandra Bandyopadhyay who was conferred the title of Vidyasagar by Sanskrit college Kolkata besides his many other achievements as a philosopher, academic educator, writer and philanthropist,” the official said.

Change ‘Bua-Bhatija’ model in Bengal: Modi IANS, DIAMOND HARBOUR (WEST BENGAL)

P

rime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday launched a scathing attack on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her nephew cum Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek, accusing them of running the “bua-bhatija model of governance” and turning “Ganatantra” (democracy) into “Gundatantra” (hooliganism). Addressing a public rally in Diamond Harbour, where Abhishek Banerjee is contesting as a Trinamool Congress candidate, he

said that the ‘Bhatija’s’ has no chance of winning as people here are looking for a change. “In West Bengal, your vote will decide if the decades-old politics of bloodshed in the state will stop or not. You will have to decide if you want to save democracy. In the ‘Bua-Bhatija model of governance’, people of Bengal are living in utter fear except the infiltrators, cow smugglers, women traffickers, syndicates, extortionists, chit fund leaders, coal and sand mafias. These people are immune to the fear. “The way the aunt and nephew gang has demeaned Bengal, there

is rebellion against it. Due to frustration, Didi is openly talking about taking revenge inch by inch. This is not the time to seek revenge, it is time for a change in Bengal. All your desires will stay unfulfilled and the change will come. Trust me this time, Didi’s nephew chances are zero,” he said. Modi also accused Banerjee, the sitting MP from Diamond Harbour of constructing his office by illegally occupying the road. “I have also been told that as per Trinamool’s traditions, nephew’s office is also constructed by illegally occupying the road. Didi, you have earned so much, the party

Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

has accumulated money through extortion, then why did your nephew illegally take the land kept for the road,” he asked. Answering his own question, he said: “One cannot do away with

the habit of looting.” Attacking the Chief Minister Banerjee, Modi said she has doubled the negativity in her by taking the bad points of the erstwhile Left government.

Is polarization helping BJP in West Bengal?

The TMC, which swept the 2014 general elections in the state by bagging 34 Lok Sabha seats, is unsure about repeating the same performance this time

BJP government holds on to its approval ratings

The state has witnessed the most bitter electioneering this time between the TMC and the Bharatiya Janata Party. IANS, NEW DELHI

W

ith the Lok Sabha elections being in the last leg, the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) of West Bengal has sensed that the BJP has gained ground in the state, possibly at the cost of the Left, due to polarization efforts of the saffron party. The state, which has witnessed the most bitter electioneering this time between the TMC and the Bharatiya Janata Party, will have polling on the remaining nine of the 42 Lok Sabha seats on Sunday,

the seventh and last phase of elections. The TMC, which swept the 2014 general elections in the state by bagging 34 Lok Sabha seats, is unsure about repeating the same performance this time. According to a senior TMC leader, the Left votes will be the key factor this time to determine how many seats the Mamata Banerjee-led party would get in the ongoing elections. In the 2014 polls, the TMC had increased its tally by 15 seats over the 2009 election results by wresting seats from the Left Front.

The Left parties had won only two seats, which was a decrease of 13 seats it had bagged in the 2009 elections. The BJP had won two Lok Sabha seats in 2014, up from one which it got the previous time. In these polls, the TMC got a vote share of 39.05 per cent, up by 8.13 per cent from the previous elections. The BJP had got 17.02 per cent votes, an increase of 10.88 per cent from the 2009 elections. The TMC hopes to win 30 seats in the state this time but feels that if even 10 per cent of Left votes swing towards the BJP, then its

NEW DELHI: With Lok Sabha elections coming to an end with the last phase of voting on May 19, the satisfaction level of the people with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party remains high as most of the respondents in CVOTER-IANS tracker continue to give a thumbs up to the ruling dispensation. In a month-to-month comparison, the net satisfaction rating for the government remained almost unchanged between April 9 and May 9 during which voting was held for five of the seven phases of Lok Sabha polls. Voting for the sixth phase were held on May 12. In a sample of 11,250 on May 9, 45.60

tally could drop as low as 25, meaning a loss of 19 seats from the last time. There is an assessment in the party that the leaders of Left parties themselves might be asking their supporters to vote for the BJP, since they feel they cannot defeat the TMC and that the BJP was in a better position to do so, the TMC leader said. The TMC feels that polarization efforts of the BJP were helping the saffron party and it could gain in some 15 seats having Hindu majority. So the tally of BJP could go up to even 10 seats, the TMC feels. The

per cent respondents said that they were very much satisfied with the current BJP government and 25.33 percent said there were happy to some extent. Another 27.37 per cent said they were not satisfied with the government at all. The net approval rating on this day was 43.76. A month ago on April 9, 45.57 per cent respondents had said they were very much satisfied with the current government with overall approval rating of 44.54. The numbers show that the government has been able to hold its popularity among the voters during the crucial phases of the poll process. —IANS

BJP has gone all out to make electoral gains in West Bengal, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself holding several rallies. Party chief Amit Shah has also addressed many public meetings besides holding road shows in the state. The state has witnessed the most bitter election campaign this time, which was accompanied by violence during all the six phases of polling. The constituencies going to elections on May 19 are Dum Dum, Barasat, Basirhat, Jaynagar, Mathurapur, Diamond Harbour, Jadavpur, Kolkata (South) and Kolkata (North).

iting the attacks on the Nehru-Gandhi family by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the Lok Sabha 2019 campaign, Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday vowed that he will not insult Modi’s parents in return. “Narendra Modi talks of hatred, insults my father (late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi), speaks about my grandmother (late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi), my greatgrandfather (former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru) but I will, all

my life, will never speak about his family or his parents. I will die but never insult his mother or father,” he said at rallies for party candidates in Neemuch area of Madhya Pradesh’s Mandsaur, Tarana in Ujjain and Khandwa parliamentary constituencies. “I am not a member of the RSS or the BJP, but of the Congress. They (Modi and the BJP) may send as much hate and anger they want my way, but I will answer it with love. I will embrace him warmly. We will defeat Modi with love. We defeated him in and the BJP Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan

and Chhattisgarh with love,” he said. On former Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s questioning of the Kamal Nath-led Congress government’s farmer loans waiver, Gandhi again cited how Chouhan’s own brother and relatives had benefitted from it. “Congress has waived loans of everyone, we treat everyone with love... be it someone from the BJP or the Congress, everyone eligible has had their loans waived. “If Narendra Modi has a 56-inch chest, we have a 6-inch heart,” he said.

DMK unsure of third front

The DMK said it will stick with the Congress even after the Lok Sabha elections IANS, CHENNAI

According to DMK, if some third front proponents join hands with the BJP and form a coalition, then the DMK and Congress will be left alone.

T

he DMK said this week that it will stick with the Congress even after the Lok Sabha elections and that this had been conveyed to Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao who favors a non-Congress, non-BJP coalition to govern India. “We are committed to the Congress. Never in the history of the DMK has it changed its alliance post elections. The party has always stuck to its pre-poll alliance partner,” a DMK leader told IANS on the condition of anonymity. He said that the importance of DMK’s alliance with the Congress was explained to Rao at the meeting with Stalin here on Monday. Rao was requested to look at the possibility of supporting the Congress, an idea which he did not negate. “Our party will not align with the BJP with or without Narendra Modi as it would have a negative impact in Tamil Nadu. There is an anti-BJP wave in Tamil Nadu. The DMK will not be part of a third front government formed with the support of BJP,” the DMK leader added. DMK President M.K. known only after the Lok Sabha election results are declared whether a non-Congress, non-BJP grouping was possible. He said the Telangana Chief Minister met him on Monday out of courtesy. He said Rao came to Tamil Nadu primarily to visit tem-

ples. Stalin said Rao did not meet him in connection with the formation of a third front. Rao on Monday had an hourlong meeting with Stalin here but it appeared that his proposal for a non-BJP, non-Congress coalition didn’t have takers.

According to the DMK, ideally the Congress should be part of any central government so that there is stability. “In fact Rao’s own party TRS has to win all the 17 Lok Sabha seats in Telangana so that he can try to forge a third front post election

results,” said the DMK leader who did not wish to be identified. Political analyst Raveendhran Dhuraiswamy told IANS: “The DMK-Congress combine will get a sizeable percentage of votes. The DMK will not go with BJP after the elections. As for Stalin, Tamil Nadu is more important than having a say in the central government.” According to one DMK leader, if some third front proponents join hands with the BJP and form a coalition, then the DMK and Congress will be left alone. Meanwhile, DMK senior leader and Treasurer Duraimurugan on Tuesday met Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu at Amaravati. Duraimurugan told reporters that he met Naidu as a mark of courtesy.

TN must take steps to free KCR trying to split non-NDA parties: CPI Rajiv killers: Ramadoss IANS, HYDERABAD

CHENNAI: PMK founder S. Ramadoss on Thursday said the Tamil Nadu government should take steps to release the seven persons convicted in connection with former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination under the Criminal Procedure Code. Ramadoss also accused the Modi government of following different standards when it came to releasing Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt and the seven convicts in the Gandhi assassination case. The seven convicts are Perarivalan, Murugan, Nalini, Shanthan, Ravichandran, Jayakumar and Robert Pyas. Gandhi was assassinated by a Sri Lankan Tamil suicide bomber at an election rally near Chennai in May 1991. The seven, who are Indians or Sri Lankans, were said to be involved in the crime. In a statement, Ramadoss said the Tamil Nadu government should exert pressure on Governor Banwarilal Purohit to release the seven. If the Governor does not order their release, then the state should take steps to release them under

the Criminal Procedure Code. Ramadoss said it had come to light that Dutt was released by the Maharashtra government without getting the central government’s nod though the actor was convicted under a central government law for the Mumbai serial blasts. He said that as per the order of a Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court in 2015, only the central government has the power to reduce the sentence if a person is convicted under a central law. The PMK founder said if Dutt was jailed under the Arms Act for illegal possession of a gun, then it is only the central government which had the power to reduce his jail term.

he Communist Party of India (CPI) on Thursday alleged that Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao was trying to split non-NDA parties in the name of a Federal Front. CPI General Secretary Survaram Sudhakar Reddy said the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) chief was making no effort to meet the leaders of the constituents of the BJPled National Democratic Alliance (NDA) to invite them to join his proposed Federal Front. Reddy said while the Left parties had no reservation over efforts to bring together the regional parties, the manner in which KCR was pursuing his efforts had raised serious doubts about his real intentions. The CPI leader told reporters that the TRS President had so far held talks only with the parties which were either part of the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) or which were likely to support it. “Why is KCR not holding talks with Akali Dal, the party which was fighting for the rights of the states and for a true a federal set up? Why

is he not inviting Ram Vilas Paswan’s party to join the Federal Front or making an appeal to other constituents of NDA?” asked Reddy. The CPI leader said that even before the completion of the Lok Sabha elections, KCR had resumed his efforts to form a Federal Front by visiting various states. He was referring to TRS leader’s recent meetings with Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and DMK leader M.K. Stalin. Reddy said during the last five years there was not even one

instance where KCR criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He said the TRS leader backed every move by the Modi government. Predicting a hung Parliament, Sudhakar Reddy said the formation of a government without the support of either the BJP or Congress was not possible. He appealed to all secular parties to come together to form a non-BJP government. “More than the power, the country’s future should be important. The need of the hour is to protect democracy, secularism and the Constitution ,” he said.

Healthy tips to protect your skin from pollution

IANS, LONDON

I

f you are tired of certain employees skipping work, look at the constitution of the team. According to an interesting study, women in purely male teams and older employees in very young teams are absent almost twice as much as their colleagues in teams where they have a good fit. Professor Florian Kunze and Max Reinwald from University of Konstanz in Germany investigated workplace behaviour of employees who are in the minority in their teams. The two researchers observed more than 800 teams in a big Swiss-based service company over the course of seven years. They focused on two attributes of new team members -- gender and age. They found that the more unequal a new team member, the earlier and the more easily they will find themselves in situations where they will be subject to discrimination. “Our study is limited to a bluecollar environment, where prejudices towards women and older coworkers are more pronounced. We can safely draw the conclusion that

For the study, the researchers observed more than 800 teams for seven years.

women in male-dominated, as well as older employees in younger environments experience more discrimination. And this experience of discrimination increases over time,” said Professor Kunze. The team evaluated 2,711 persons -- date of team entry, team composition, team swaps, absenteeism -- all completely anonymously. “The trend is pretty obvious: during their first year on a new team, new members remain inconspicu-

ous regardless of their fit. After that, the curve rises, and quite steeply in many cases. After a few years, women in purely male teams, and older employees in very young teams, are absent almost twice as much as their colleagues in teams where they have a good fit. “It comes down to about eight annual days of absence compared to four, which is pretty significant,” said the researchers in a paper published in Academy of Management Journal.

NEW DELHI: Considering the level of pollution, keeping one’s skin healthy can be tough. Cleansing and using ayurvedic herbs such as Neem and Tulsi is important, say experts. Taruna Yadav, Ayurveda Doctor, Forest Essentials and Sangeeta Velaskar, Vice President and Head, Medical Services and Research and Development, Kaya Limited have shared tips on how to maintain a healthy skin. Wash away the pollutants: Start with cleansing, which is a two-step process. First remove the make-up completely, followed by rinsing the face with a sulphate-free cleanser. Non-foaming cleansers such as ubtans are great for cleansing as they give a healing and nourishing experience. Opt for natural pollution combatants: Herbs such as Neem, Tulsi, Sandalwood, Moringa and Turmeric are very well-known for their purifying and healing properties. They help in eliminating the toxins and detoxifying the skin with their antiinflammatory, blood purifying and anti-ageing properties. These can be used externally as well as internally. Anti-oxidants packed products: Anti-oxidants help to fend off free radical damage and can support healthy-looking skin when taken internally, with the help of a healthy diet and regular intake of multi-vitamins. Anti-oxidants to benefit the

upper layers of the skin are also available in skin care products. Look for moisturisers and serums that contain anti-oxidants like vitamins A, C and E. Night skincare treatment: Our skin has its own day and night biorhythm. During the day, it needs protection and ample hydration, and at night it needs support for its natural regeneration process. Nourishing and moisturizing night creams, rich in active ingredients are useful, as skin works to repair and regenerate itself at night. So, don’t miss your ‘beauty sleep’. —IANS

Summer 2019: Get Dealing with envy? Timing is key the fashion game right IANS, NEW YORK

IANS, NEW DELHI

S

corching heat should not be your reason to ditch your fashion quotient. Embrace your natural beauty and minimalist aesthetics to bring out the best version of yourself in the summer season. Stafford Braganza, National Makeup Artist at NYX Professional Makeup, gives tips and tricks to put your best face forward for a fresh look. Start fresh: Begin with splashing cold water on your face to get rid of all the excess oil and pat it dry, followed by application of a lightweight moisturiser. Primer comes first: Apply a face and eye primer for a smooth texture and even surface for your foundation to glide on easily. It prevents the foundation from melting down and helps your make-up last longer through the day.

Say goodbye to powder, and hello to cream: Use creamy versions of blush and eye-shadows as it settles effortlessly over the skin whereas powder tends to wear off easily. You could dust some powder over the cream for the cheeks and eyelids that will help the make-up last longer. From staple summer dresses to linen essentials, the summer mood is welcomed with styles that embody all the cheer of the season. Francesca Zedda, Head of Style and Trends at Marks & Spencer, suggests how one can stay fashionable in summer. v Dresses are key for the season: think quality, comfort and style. From light cotton floral dresses. v Introduce cool whites into the wardrobe.

W

hen it comes to feeling jealous, timing could make all the difference. New research has found that we are more envious of someone else’s covetable experience before it happens than after it has passed. “Enviable events lose some power over us once those events are in our past,” said study co-author Ed O’Brien, Associate Professor at the University of Chicago in the US. Envy is an interesting emotion because it can motivate negative outcomes such as self-dislike, and also positive outcomes such as feeling inspired. For the study, published in the journal Psychological Science, the researchers conducted three experiments. In the first study, 620 participants imagined a close friend getting to have experiences that the participants desired themselves, such as taking a dream vacation,

The researchers picked more than 600 participants for the experiment.

being promoted to a dream job, and buying a dream car. Some imagined how they would feel about the various scenarios in the days and weeks before they happened. Others imagined how they would feel in the days and weeks after the events occurred.

The results showed that timing, even when thinking about hypothetical scenarios, mattered. Participants rated the experiences, which were otherwise identical, as less enviable after they happened than before they happened.

Nearly 100 Charged in Massive Marriage Fraud Scheme BY THE UNITED STATES OF ATTONREY’S OFFICE OF THE SOUTHERN DISTRICT OF TEXAS HOUSTON, TX – A total of 50 people are now in custody following the return of a 206-count indictment alleging varying roles in a largescale marriage fraud scheme, announced U.S. Attorney Ryan K. Patrick along with Special Agent in Charge Mark Dawson of Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and District Director Tony Bryson of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). The federal grand jury returned the massive indictment April 30, 2019, charging 96 individuals. To date, law enforcement has taken 50 into custody. Of those, nine are set to appear for a detention hearing before U.S. Magistrate Judge Nancy Johnson at 10:00 a.m. today. The indictment remains sealed as to those charged but not as yet in custody. “These arrests mark the culmination of a comprehensive year-long multi-agency investigation into one of the largest alleged marriage fraud conspiracies ever documented in the Houston area,” said Dawson. “By working together with our partners from various federal law enforcement agencies we have sent a resounding message that we are united in our effort to disrupt and dismantle criminal organizations that seek to circumvent U.S. law by fraudulent means.” The investigation targeted a suspected criminal organization allegedly operating a largescale marriage fraud scheme. The scam involved the creation of sham marriages in order to illegally obtain admission and immigrant status for aliens in the United States, according to the indictment. The charges allege Ashley Yen Nguyen AKA Duyen, 53, of Houston, headed the Southwest Houston-based organization and had associates operating throughout Texas and Vietnam.

“Marriage fraud is a serious crime. This indictment reveals how successful our working relationships are with our law enforcement and intelligence partners when it comes to investigating marriage fraud,” said Bryson. “USCIS remains steadfast in our commitment to ensuring national security, public safety and the integrity of the immigration system.” A sham marriage is a marriage that is entered into for the primary purpose of circumventing immigration laws. The indictment alleges the marriages involved in this conspiracy were shams because the spouses did not live together and did not intend to do so, contrary to documents and statements they submitted to USCIS. The spouses only met briefly, usually immediately before they obtained their marriage license, or not at all, according to the charges. The spouses allegedly entered into the marriage pursuant to a financial arrangement for the primary purpose of circumventing U.S. immigration laws. According to the charges, each beneficiary spouse entered in an agreement with Duyen in which they would pay approximately $50,000 $70,000 to obtain full lawful permanent resident status. The agreements were allegedly prorated

in that they would pay an additional amount for each immigration benefit they received, such as admission into the United States, conditional permanent resident status and full lawful permanent resident status. In addition, Duyen and others recruited other United States citizens to act as petitioners in the sham marriages, according to the indictment, who received a portion of the proceeds received from the beneficiary spouses. Several individuals that were recruited as petitioners soon after became recruiters themselves, according to the allegations. Others were also allegedly in charge of receiving the proceeds from the beneficiary spouses and disbursing the payments to the petitioners. The indictment also charges several individuals to act as guides for U.S. citizen petitioners who allegedly travelled to Vietnam under the guise they were going to meet his/her fiancé. In truth, according to the indictment, they were beneficiary spouses paying the criminal organization in order to circumvent United States law. The criminal organization also allegedly prepared fake wedding albums which were provided to the petitioner and beneficiary spouse that included photographs to make it appear as if

they had a wedding ceremony above and beyond a simply courthouse marriage. The indictment further alleges the criminal organization provided false tax, utility and employment information to help ensure USCIS would approve the false immigration forms. Also indicted is attorney Trang Le Nguyen aka Nguyen Le Thien Trang, 45, of Pearland, for obstructing and impeding the due administration of justice and tampering with a witness, victim or informant. According to the indictment, Nguyen allegedly prepared paperwork associated with at least one of the fraudulent marriages and told a witness who provided information to law enforcement to go into hiding, not engage in any air travel that may alert federal law enforcement to her presence and not provide any further information to law enforcement. The charges include 47 counts of marriage fraud, 50 counts of mail fraud, 51 counts of immigration fraud, 51 counts of false statements under oath in matter relating to registry of aliens and one count each of conspiracy to engage in marriage fraud, conspiracy to commit mail fraud, conspiracy to commit immigration fraud, conspiracy to make false statements under oath in matter relating to registry of aliens, unlawful procurement of naturalization, obstructing and impeding the due administration of justice and tampering with a witness, victim or informant. Conspiracy to commit mail fraud, mail fraud and tampering with a witness, victim, or informant all carry possible 20-year federal prison sentences. If convicted of conspiracy to commit marriage fraud or marriage fraud, those charged face up to five years in prison. The remaining charges all have maximum possible 10-year-terms of federal imprisonment. HSI and USCIS conducted the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Adam Laurence Goldman, Michael Day and Kate Suh are prosecuting the case.

Sita Janma Utsav at Hindu Temple of Lake County BY STAFF WRITER GRAYSLAKE, IL- The Hindu Mandir of Lake County, Grayslake, IL, celebrated Sita/Janaki Navami or Sita Janma Utsav (the birthday celebration) of Goddess Sita, one of the central figures in Ramayan of Treta yug, which was also coincided with the celebration of Mother’s Day, on Sunday, May 12, 2019, from 4:00pm to 6:00pm with hundreds of devotees Temple priests, Pt. Ganesh Ji and Shri. Yogesh Pandey performed Sankalpam and chanting of Vedic Mantra along with participating in the Abhishekam of the Sita Ma, the daughter of Janaka, the king of Mithila with all the female deities of the temple by Pt. Anil Joshi Ji. Their chanting of Vedic Mantras created a divine atmosphere in the temple. The entry of female babies in the form of Sita Ma into the shrine was welcomed by the temple priests lead by Pt. Joshi Ji with all the Vedic rituals and Jai Sita Mata slogans by the devotees and young children. Pt Joshi Ji delivered his thoughtprovoking discourse on the significance of Sita Navami.. Before Sringar Darshan and Arati were performed, melodious Bhajans were sung by Smt. Rita Patel, Shri. Athul Soni, and Shri. Kamlesh Desai and made everyone to immerse in their tunes. This was followed by the Mother’s Day celebrations in a typical Hindu way with all the Vedic rituals. In the first round, all the Grandmas were revered by washing and wiping of their feet, offering of flowers, tilak, blessed chunni, gifts, and salutations to their feet by the young children. In the second

round, all the mothers were also venerated in the same way by the children. At the end, Pt. Joshi Ji thanked and blessed all the children, grandparents and parents and all other devotees for their active participation, successful life and making

the event a grand success. He also thanked all the sponsors and volunteers for their support and time and admired their efforts. All the devotees were served Maha Prasadam prepared by Shri. Neelkanth Anand and his team.

Indian-Origin Woman Convicted Of Killing 9-Year Old Stepdaughter in New York BY STAFF WRITER QUEENS, NY- A 55-year-old Indian American stepmother has been convicted in the 2016 death of her child, who was found strangled in the bathtub of her New York City home, according to an AP report. Prosecutors said May 13 that Shamdai Arjun faces up to 25 years to life in prison after a jury on May 10 found her guilty of murdering 9-year-old Ashdeep Kaur in 2016. During the trial, prosecutors say an eyewitness observed Arjun and her ex-husband leaving the Queens home with two grandchildren. The eyewitness asked about the stepdaughter and was told she was in the bathroom. Prosecutors say the eyewitness called the victim’s father who told her to break down the bathroom door. She did and found the girl strangled in the bathtub. According to an IANS report, it took a jury less an hour to convict the woman; she will be sentenced on June 3. Young Kaur had moved from India to be in the care of her father, Sukhjinder Singh, and his wife in 2016. Family members said the girl told them about past abuse at the hands of her

stepmother. “This is a horrifying case of a defenseless 9-year-old child, who was to be cared for by her stepmother but was instead strangled to death by her,” said Acting Queens District Attorney John M. Ryan May 13, according to a CBSNewYork report. “Her actions are truly incomprehensible and deserve the maximum punishment allowed under the law.” According to trial testimony, Arjun left her home in the Richmond Hill section of Queens on

Aug. 19, 2016 around 5:30 p.m. with her former husband and two grandchildren, ages 3 and 5. Asked about the 9-year-old victim’s whereabouts, she told an eyewitness that the child was in the bathroom and was waiting for her father to pick her up. The eyewitness then called the girl’s father, Sukhjinder Singh. Ashdeep’s lifeless and bruised naked body was later found in the bathtub. The medical examiner’s office determined that the cause of death was strangulation.

collision remains under investigation. New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said that the loss of the young officer was a tragedy. Persaud leaves behind his wife, who is 13 weeks pregnant, New York Police Commissioner James O’Neill said. A GoFundMe page has been set up by the NYPD Desi Society to help his family; it raised over $26,000 out of a goal of $40,000 within three days.

BY A STAFF WRITER GRAYSLAKE, IL- The teachers of Lake High School, Lake Villa, IL, planned their students ‘visits in two large groups of 80 students in each group to the Hindu Mandir of Lake County, Grayslake, IL on Tuesday, April 16, 2019 morning. Teachers thought that a visit to a Hindu Mandir is an ideal way to learn about Hinduism and get a firsthand experience of the Hindu faith in practice. Hindu Mandir of Lake County always welcomes non-Hindu visitors, tour groups from other states as well as local churches and book clubs including school and college student groups from the surrounding areas. A dedicated and very popular founding member and former president of the temple, Dr. Harsh Kumar coordinated the program and welcomed the groups warmly to temple and said we are happy to let anyone interested to “see what our culture and religion are about.” In the temple’s auditorium, Shri. Anand Upadhyay greeted all the students and provided them with an interesting and impressive learning method about the world’s oldest living faith “Sanathan Dharma” from an interactive presentation. He talked to them about Vedas, Upanishads, Bhagavad Gita, Yoga, Indian festivals, Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam and Ahimsa principles. He explained to the how the qualities of sattva (serenity), rajas (passion), and tamas (ignorance) shape the nature of a person. . He also described to students the Hindu belief in mastering control of one’s senses and desires and of peacefully accepting the good and the bad of life. He answered very clearly all their questions. All the Students removed their shoes like Hindus before entering the main prayer hall with the sanctums and quietly moved in. These students were welcomed with a Hindu greeting and a smile by the temple priest, Shree Yogesh Pandey in the shrine area. All the students and teachers witnessed and participated in the midday Mangalarati ceremony. Pt. Joshi Ji blessed them by chanting Vedic Mantra for their success in studies, bright future, and happy and healthy lives. All the students as well as teachers fond their trip to the Mandir to be educational, inspiring and enjoyable. One of the teachers said that the most striking Hindu site locally available is surely this temple.
