US NEWS
Pence narrowly beats Kaine Every time Kaine attacked, Pence parried and deftly shifted the conversation to something else IANS, VIRGINIA
R
epublican vice presidential candidate Mike Pence narrowly beat Senator Tim Kaine as they sparred on US policies, the abortion law, the war in Syria and “safe zones” for refugees in the US in a 90-minute TV debate, a CNN poll showed. Debating Kaine, Indiana Governor Pence taught a master class on how it’s done. Every time Kaine attacked, Pence parried and deftly shifted the conversation to entirely something else. When Kaine demanded that Pence defend Donald Trump’s secrecy on his taxes, the Republican ducked and talked about how low taxes are good for economic growth. Pence, in the debate, aimed to stabilize Trump’s bid after a turbulent week in which the billionaire admitted that he greatly benefited from “unfair” US taxes laws.
Stop fundraising, Trump Foundation told WASHINGTON: New York Attorney General’s office ordered Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s foundation to cease fundraising immediately after a report revealing that the charity is not properly authorized to seek public donations. “The Attorney General’s office is the sole regulator of charities in New York State, and when evidence of clear misconduct is brought to our attention, we take action,” Xinhua news agency quoted Attorney General Eric Schneiderman as saying. On Monday, the Trump campaign released a statement questioning the “political motives” behind the investigation into the foundation as Schneiderman is a Democrat. The Trump Foundation never registered under article 7A of New York’s Executive Law as is required for any charity asking for more than 25,000 dollars per year from the public. This means Trump’s foundation has avoided any of the outside audits New York law requires of larger charities. Trump was fined for using his foundation to donate 25,000 dollars to a political organization for Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi and reporting in its public forms that the money was for a similarly named charity instead. Non-profits are not allowed to make political contributions in New York state. —IANS

Whenever Kaine offered an extended list of Trump insults that he believed Pence would defend, the billionaire’s running mate did not defend. Instead, he pivoted to complaining about Clinton and the “basket of deplorables”.
Pence was tight, disciplined, and focused on his talking points. He never took the bait, never let himself get dragged into unfavorable terrain, and simply ignored subjects he did not wish to discuss. He stuck to the script in toto.
It was a bravura performance, one that a passel of GOP senators and Congress members running in tough races ought to study. The high point of the debate came when Kaine launched an attack on Trump’s foreign policy.
‘Benefitted from unfair tax laws’ IANS, WASHINGTON
R
epublican presidential nominee Donald Trump has admitted greatly benefiting from “unfair” US tax laws, saying that he used them “brilliantly” to his advantage, but promising to change them if he becomes the President. “The unfairness of the tax laws is unbelievable, it’s something I’ve been talking about for a long time, despite frankly being a big beneficiary of the laws,” Efe news quoted Trump as saying. “I’m working for you now, I’m not working for Trump,” he said — a statement that brought cheers from the crowd at a campaign rally in Pueblo, Colorado. According to the billionaire, because of his past experience with
Trump said he understands the complex system better than anybody else
using the tax laws to his benefit, he understands the complex system better than anybody else and is the only person who can “fix” it, promising to do exactly that, although not specifying exactly what he would do in that regard.
In his first remarks after revelations about his tax history were published by The New York Times on Saturday, the magnate said that he had “brilliantly” used the US tax laws to legally pay as little in federal taxes as possible.
Clinton’s running mate raised Trump’s Twitter war with Miss Universe. He ridiculed the billionaire for having no plan -- and yet harping on “I have a secret plan.” Kaine kept shooting with Trump liners like — “I know more than all the generals about ISIL” ; “I am going to fire all the general”; “John McCain is no hero”; “the generals need to be fired”; and “NATO is obsolete”. Pence simply did not defend instead deflected, saying, “that had a lot of creative lines in it”. On taxes and Trump, Pence declared that “he used the tax code just the way it’s supposed to be used, and he did it brilliantly”. Pence’s tone and his calm delivery never wavered, and he continued to deflect and deny questions about Trump’s ideas while turning back to the Obama administration’s foreign policy record, The New York Times reported.
‘Trump contributed nothing for country’ WASHINGTON: Emphasizing the need of a law for the nominees of the two major parties to release their tax returns, Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton Hillary Clinton said her Republican counterpart has contributed nothing for the country. While referring to the New York Times report, which noted Donald Trump’s net loss of more than $915 million in 1995, Clinton said her Republican counterpart “may not have paid a dime” in federal income taxes for nearly two decades. Clinton said that millions of Americans worked hard to pay their fare share. —IANS
Climate change: Obama, DiCaprio call for action IANS, WASHINGTON
U
S President Barack Obama and actor Leonardo DiCaprio highlighted this week the urgency of taking further action to combat climate change as there is “a race against time”. The two during the South by South Lawn festival on Monday, organized by the White House to encourage innovative ideas, stressed
that the Americans should take the climate issue into account in the November Presidential elections, EFE news reported. The Oscar-winning actor from The Revenant brought his environmental activism to the White House during a conversation with Obama, which began with a reference to politicians, such as Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, who has been sceptical about the cli-

‘SURGICAL STRIKES’ STUN PAK Pak in denial as Indian special forces demolish at least seven launch pads killing nearly 40 terrorists on the LoC; Congress, other opposition parties hail the effort IANS, NEW DELHI

ndia said on September 29 it carried out surgical strikes on terrorist launch pads across the LoC inflicting heavy casualties, triggering a sharp warning from Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. Eleven days after terrorists killed 18 Indian soldiers in Jammu and Kashmir, Indian Special Forces targeted “some terrorist teams” positioned at launch pads on the Line of Control (LoC), the military announced. “During these counterterrorist operation, significant casualties have been caused to the terrorists and those who support them,” Lt Gen Ranbir Singh, the Director General Military Operations (DGMO), told the media here. The announcement followed a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Pakistan denied any surgical strike by India but admitted to the death of two soldiers in cross-LoC firing by Indian troops. Sharif warned that Pakistan’s “intent for peaceful neighbourhood should not be mistaken as our weakness”. Gen Ranbir Singh said the targeted terrorists had planned “to carry out infiltration and terrorist strikes in Jammu and Kashmir and various other metros in our country. “The operation was basically focussed to ensure that these terrorists do not succeed in their design of infiltration and carrying out destruction and endangering the lives of citizens of our country,” he said. Gen Ranbir Singh said the operation had since ceased. “We do not have plans of further continuation

information”, he said. The Pakistani military said there were no surgical strikes, “instead there had been crossborder fire initiated and conducted by India which is existential phenome-
non. “As per rules of engagement, the same was strongly and befittingly responded by Pakistani troops. The notion of surgical strikes linked to alleged terrorist bases is an illusion being generated by India.” Minutes after India announced the surgical strikes, Prime Minister Sharif denounced what he called was an “unprovoked and naked aggression” by Indian forces. “Our intent for peaceful neighborhood should not be mistaken as our weakness as our valiant forces are fully capable of defending the territorial integrity of our country,” Sharif said. He added that Pakistan can “thwart any evil design made to undermine the sovereignty of Pakistan”. Meanwhile, an Indian soldier who was injured during the September 18 terror attack on the Uri army camp died, taking the total toll of martyrs to 19, officials said.
CHANDIGARH: Anxious villagers on September 30 continued to move out of their villages in Punjab which shares the International Border (IB) with Pakistan as panic gripped the area regarding a possible strike by Islamabad in the wake of the surgical strikes carried out by the Indian Army across the Line of Control (LoC). People alleged mismanagement by local authorities at evacuation camps saying that there were hardly any arrangements. Since most village residents are from farming families, the farmers were worried that their standing paddy crop, which is ready for harvest, could be affected if it was not harvested on time. “The crop is ready for harvest. We don’t even know when we will return to do that,” farmer Shamsher Singh said. The Punjab government, following directions from the Ministry of Home Affairs, had ordered evacuation of people to “safer areas” from within the 10-km belt from the IB. Punjab shares a 553-km border with Pakistan. Over four lakh (400,000) villagers in six border districts have been affected due to the evacuation. Many people moved out of the villages to homes of relatives and friends a little away from the border belt. But officials in the border districts said that arrangements were still being made to accommodate people being evacuated from the border villages. —IANS
US urges India, Pak against escalation of tensions IANS, WASHINGTON
F
ollowing the Indian Army’s surgical strikes against terror launch pads across the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir, the US has called for steps to avoid steps that escalate tensions between India and Pakistan. “Our message to both sides has been the same, in terms of encouraging them to increase communication to deal with this threat and to avoid steps that escalate the tensions,” US State Department spokesperson John Kirby said in the daily press briefing. “I think I’m not going to get into characterising each and every step along the way there,” he said.
Eighteen soldiers lost their lives during the terro attack in Uri.
“But obviously, what we want to see is increased cooperation against what is a very shared common
threat for both countries, and to see steps being taken to deal with it by all sides.”
Stating that the US was following the situation closely, Kirby said: “We also understand that the Indian and Pakistani militaries have been in communication. We believe that continued communication is obviously important to reduce tensions.” Earlier, National Security Advisor Susan Rice spoke to her Indian counterpart Ajit Doval and said that the US has reiterated that Pakistan must “take effective action to combat and delegitimise” UN-designated terrorists and terror groups. Rice spoke to Doval just ahead of the Indian Army’s surgical strikes on terror launch pads across the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir. In a press statement, US Nation-
al Security Council spokesperson Ned Price said that Rice “strongly condemned the September 18 cross-border attack on the Indian Army Brigade headquarters in Uri and offered condolences to the victims and their families”. “Ambassador Rice affirmed President (Barack) Obama’s commitment to redouble our efforts to bring to justice the perpetrators of terrorism throughout the world,” Price said. “Highlighting the danger that cross-border terrorism poses to the region, Ambassador Rice reiterated our expectation that Pakistan take effective action to combat and delegitimise United Nations-designated terrorist individuals and entities,” she added.

Pak PM admits isolation The government in Pakistan asked military-led intelligence agencies ‘not to interfere if law enforcement acts against militant groups’ IANS, ISLAMABAD
A
dmitting to Pakistan’s diplomatic isolation, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has told the ISI to crack down on terrorists and soon conclude the probes into the 2008 Mumbai and 2016 Pathankot terror attacks. Sharif’s blunt demand came at a high-level meeting of civilian officials with the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) chief, Gen. Rizwan Akhtar, the influential Dawn newspaper reported on Thursday, citing sources who were present. In a stunning admission, Foreign Secretary Aizaz Chaudhry said on Wednesday that “Pakistan faces diplomatic isolation and that (its) talking points have been met with indifference in major world capitals”. Even China, Pakistan’s closest ally,

had questioned the logic of repeatedly putting on technical hold a UN ban on Jaish-i-Mohammad leader Masood Azhar, Chaudhry said, the Dawn reported. The meeting — where there was
an extraordinary verbal clash between the ISI chief and Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, the Prime Minister’s younger brother — came amid worsening ties with India.
IS chief ill after assassin ‘poisons’ food IANS, BAGHDAD
T UNITED NATIONS: Former Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Guterres was unanimously selected on Wednesday by the UN Security Council as the next UN Secretary-General, succeeding Ban Ki-moon on January 1, 2017. Xinhua news agency quoted Russian UN Ambassador Vitaly Churkin, who is the council President for October, as saying that Guterres, who was former head of the UN refugee agency, has been chosen for the top job. After about one and a half hours of closed council consultation, Churkin made the announcement to reporters, with representatives of the 15 council members standing behind him outside the council chambers. “Today after our sixth straw poll, we have a clear favorite and his name is Antonio Guterres, and we have decided to go for a formal vote tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. EST (1500 GMT) on Thursday and we hope that it can be done by acclamation,” he said. “We wish Mr. Guterres well in discharging his duties as the Secretary-General of the United Nations for the next five years,” Churkin said. —IANS
Dawn said the civilian government, in a “blunt, orchestrated and unprecedented warning”, asked military-led intelligence agencies “not to interfere if law enforcement acts against militant groups that are banned or until now considered offlimits for civilian action”. “Nawaz Sharif has directed that fresh attempts be made to conclude the Pathankot investigation and restart the stalled Mumbai attacksrelated trials in a Rawalpindi antiterrorism court,” the daily said. It said the government informed the ISI of the “growing international isolation of Pakistan and sought consensus on several key actions by the state” to reverse the situation. As a first step, the ISI chief and National Security Adviser Nasser Janjua have been told to travel to each of the four Pakistani provinces with a message for ISI’s sector commanders.
he Islamic State (IS) terrorist group ringleader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was reportedly seriously ill after having his food poisoned by an assassin, a media report said. Meals prepared for Baghdadi and three other commanders of the terrorist organization were allegedly poisoned in Nineveh’s Be’aaj district, the Daily Mail reported on Monday. It quoted an Iraqi news agency as saying that four militants, including Baghdadi, were suffering from “severe poisoning” and “have been transferred to an unknown location under strict measures”. The IS terror group has reported-

ly launched a campaign of arrests to track down those responsible for poisoning the food. The identities of the three other
commanders is unknown. Baghdadi is credited with transforming the breakaway al-Qaeda group and turning it into the independent IS group that is arguably the most powerful and wealthiest jihadi organization in the world. Al-Baghdadi’s movements are known only by his inner circle, and the Caliph, as he is known to his followers, is constantly on the move, changing locations in Iraq and Syria to avoid airstrikes. Under the leadership of Baghdadi, the group spearheaded a militant offensive that expanded into Syria in 2013 and overran much of Iraq’s Arab heartland. Baghdadi has been wounded multiple times in air strikes and been reported dead, but has re-surfaced each time.
SHORT TAKES Now, replacement Note 7 catches fire NEW YORK/NEW DELHI: Samsung woes over its Galaxy Note 7 smartphone are far from over it appears. Now, a replacement Note 7 device reportedly caught fire on a US flight, leading to cancellation of the flight after evacuation. According to The Verge, Southwest Airlines flight 994 from Louisville to Baltimore was evacuated on Wednesday during the boarding process after a smoked Note 7 was spotted.
Marshall Islands’ case against India rejected THE HAGUE: The International Court of Justice on Wednesday ruled against a complaint brought by the Marshall Islands against India that it was not doing enough to halt the nuclear arms race. The UN’s top judicial agency, in a 9-7 ruling, said it has accepted India’s arguments that the ICJ should not have jurisdiction in the case. The judge said the Marshall Islands had failed to show that it has any legal dispute with India fit for the court to adjudicate.
WikiLeaks set to release new material BERLIN: WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange announced at a press conference on Tuesday that his platform will release new material in the coming months. It is planned to publish new material every week in the next ten weeks, Xinhua news agency quoted Assange as saying in a live video broadcast. The new releases will cover the themes such as oil, weapons and corporations like Google, according to Assange. US will not abandon peace process in Syria: Kerry IANS, BRUSSELS
U
S Secretary of State John Kerry said on Tuesday that the United States would not be abandoning the Syrian peace process despite the break in talks with Russia. Washington announced a suspension in talks with Russia just hours before Kerry’s speech at a Brussels conference celebrating US-European Union relations, Efe news reported. The US remained committed to a cessation of violence throughout the whole country, Kerry said, adding that this

would only be possible with the grounding of Russian and Syrian warplanes in certain areas. He said that in order to return to
the negotiation table, Russia would have to meet international law and fulfil publicly made agreements. Further, the Secretary of State
accused Russia and Syria of being the only actors in the Syrian war who had yet to agree to the delivery of international aid into besieged areas of the country. Tensions flared between the US and Russia in September when Washington heaped responsibility onto Moscow for an alleged airstrike on a humanitarian aid convoy en route to embattled areas of Aleppo. Russian President Vladimir Putin is allied to his beleaguered Syrian counterpart Bashar Al Assad and provides aerial support for the Syrian Army operations to regain control of rebel-territory, Efe news added.

Security was beefed up in Baramulla after Indian army’s surgical strikes across LoC. (Photo: IANS)
‘Surgical strikes’
WILL REAP MODI RICH POLITICAL BENEFITS Authorizing the surgical strikes, Narendra Modi is said to have shown India’s different behavior due to Pakistan's reputation which has recently nosedived globally IANS, NEW DELHI
D
uring the Kargil conflict in 1999, India did not cross the Line of Control (LoC). If it has behaved differently this time, the reason is that Pakistan’s reputation has nosedived in the last decade and a half. From being an “international migraine,” as former US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright called it, to a country which keeps “snakes in its backyard”, as another
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said, Pakistan has been steadily undermining its own position as a respectable member of the world community. India’s image, on the other hand, has been on the rise. It is also being widely recognized that India has been facing a relentless Pakistani effort to destabilize it via the targeting of parliament in December 2001 by jehadis to decimate the country’s top political leadership, to a commando-style terrorist operation in Mumbai in Novem-
ber 2008, and then to the recent succession of attacks on military camps in Pathankot, Uri and elsewhere. Few in the world will doubt, therefore, that India’s patience has been exhausted. Moreover, it is being recognized that Pakistan is keeping the Kashmir issue alive only to muddy the waters considering that Prime Minister Narendra Modi travelled the extra mile in search of a solution, as his flying visit to Lahore last December showed.
India can therefore be fairly confident that its military response on the night of September 28 to the constant Pakistani provocations will be seen as an unavoidable riposte to a neighbor which has been resorting to unremitting terror for more than a decade. In authorizing the surgical strikes by the Indian Army on the terror camps across the LoC, Modi can be said to have found the answer to eliminate the “snakes” which Pakistan harbors in its backyard for biting India.
If the earlier fears of a nuclear confrontation have abated this time, the explanation lies in India’s decision to designate such strikes as one-time operations whenever Pakistan carries out a terrorist attack. It goes without saying that Modi’s image will be burnished by his success in finding the right answer to Pakistani intransigence and belligerence, not to mention its foolishness in testing the world’s patience by joining the ISIS as a terror Frankenstein.
Border Evacuation: Political war breaks out in Punjab In the wake of surgical strikes across LoC, nearly 400,000 people in the border areas were asked to evacuate IANS, CHANDIGARH
T
he apprehension of an India-Pakistan war may have receded but a fullfledged political war has broken out in Punjab over the central and state governments getting nearly 1,000 villages within 10-km of the international border evacuated following last week’s surgical strikes by the Indian Army across the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir. Opposition parties and leaders in Punjab are blaming the Union Home Ministry and the state’s Shi-
romani Akali Dal-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in Punjab for unnecessarily building up war hysteria and getting the villages evacuated. The ruling alliance, led by Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, is being blamed for doing so to take advantage in assembly elections to be held in Punjab and Uttar Pradesh early next year. Nearly 400,000 people in the border areas have been asked to evacuate. “There has been no movement by the Pakistani Army. These days everything can be seen through satellites and technology. Even if a
jeep moves, we can see that. The centre and the Punjab government have unnecessarily ordered the evacuation. But Badal has a different take on the issue. “Political leaders should shun politics in this peculiar situation. It is unfortunate that several political leaders were continuously politicking at this critical juncture when
war clouds are hovering over the country. At this critical juncture, leaders must avoid politics for safeguarding the interests of the country in general and Punjab in particular,” Badal said. Badal and the district authorities, in few areas, have also faced the ire of residents of border villages over evacuation orders.

India clinch NZ series India reclaimed No 1 Test team status, which they had enjoyed for a short period during the WI tour by dethroning rivals Pakistan IANS, KOLKATA
R
avichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja spun India to an unassailable 2-0 series lead and the No.1 Test ranking, pinning New Zealand down in a riveting see-saw affair, to win the second cricket Test by 178 runs on the fourth day here this week. Chasing a stiff 376-run target, the visitors initially showed grit but then fell to the guile of the Indian slow bowlers once again similar to the first Test at Kanpur that they lost by 197 runs — managing a meagre 197 in their second outing before a turnout of around 12,000 spectators at the Eden Gardens. India thus reclaimed the numero uno Test team status, which they had enjoyed for a short period while during their tour to the West Indies, by dethroning arch-rivals Pakistan. In the morning, Man of the Match Wriddhiman Saha struck his second unbeaten half-century to help India post 263. New Zealand had scored 204 in their first essay in reply to India’s 316. The tourists started their run chase well, riding on opener Tom Latham’s (74 not out; 144 balls, 8x4), his ninth half-century and contributions from Martin Guptill (24) and Henry Nicolls (24) at the top order.

only 62 runs. Mohammed Shami (3-46) joined India’s party with his raw pace and swing to shave off the lower order. Bhuvneshwar Kumar (1-28) claimed the remaining wicket.
Latham departed soon after tea, starting the slide. Ashwin’s mastery over his craft was on show as he floated an inviting delivery which forced the opener to drive away from his body giving a nick to wicketkeeper Saha. Mitchell Santner (9) and B.J. Watling (1) followed suit in quick succession, Shami accounting for both. Luke Ronchi (32; 60 balls, 4x4) fought briefly before Jadeja accounted for him, castling the 35year old. Jeetan Patel (2) failed to replicate his first innings form, when he scored a gritty 47, unable to comprehend the reverse swing generated from a good length ball by Buvneshwar. Matt Henry (18) and Trent Boult (4) were cleaned up by Jadeja and Shami, respectively. Earlier, India wrested back the initiative in the second session as Ashwin and Jadeja took three wickets to deny the tourists any hope of a fightback. The hosts took 16 overs to get the first breakthrough after the openers had put on 55. Ashwin pitched the ball fuller and it turned in from outside the off stump to catch Martin Guptill (24; 49 b, 3x4) off guard. Victorious Indian skipper Virat Kohli later showered praise on his cricketers for showing character in crunch situations of the game.

It is shameful that the board is being questioned for raising players’ salaries despite their impressive performances earning them top spot in the ICC Test rankings,” Thakur told the media. “The BCCI has done a lot for Indian cricket over the years including successfully organising
the Indian Premier League (IPL). I want to ask that has the BCCI not done anything for Indian cricket in order to bring it to the stage where it is now?” he added. “I can’t say anything about the India-New Zealand series. Release 2,000 cusecs daily to TN, SC tells Karnataka The court had by its September 30 order had asked Karnataka to release 6,000 cusecs of water every day from October 1 to 6 IANS, NEW DELHI
T
he Supreme Court ordered Karnataka to release 2,000 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu daily from October 7 to 18 as it asked the Cauvery Supervisory Committee to visit the river basin area of two states for an assessment of the ground situation and report back to it by October 17. The bench of Justice Dipak Misra and Justice Uday Umesh Lalit directed the release of 2,000 cusecs of water every day for 12 days, after Karnataka told the court that in compliance with the court’s September 30 order, it has started releasing water to Tamil Nadu and by October 6, it would release 3.1 TMC of water. The court had by its September 30 order had asked Karnataka to release 6,000 cusecs of water every day from October 1 to 6. The court said that the Supervisory Committee would comprise the Central Water Commission’s Chairman, member, and Chief Engineer, the Chief Secretaries of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu or their nominees, the states’ Chief Engineers or their nominees and a representative each from Kerala and Puducherry. Noting that Karnataka has already made a statement that it has started to release water in pursuance to the September 30 order, the court earlier on Tuesday asked it to indicate the quantity of water it could release daily basis from October 7 to

18 — the date when the court would be hearing various applications and appeals by both states. Giving half an hour time to Karnataka’s counsel V.N. Raghupathy, the court adjourned the hearing for this period. On the resumption, state’s Advocate General M.R. Naik told the court that they can release 1,500 cusecs every day. He said
that it was on the basis of instructions he has received from the highest level in the government. While agreeing to send their representative to the supervisory committee, Shekhar Naphade, appearing for Tamil Nadu, told the bench that the better course would be that based on shortfall in rains, the share of all the parties be reduced proportionately.
On couple of occasions, the hearing saw temperatures soaring as Karnataka resisted the bench’s suggestion for release water to Tamil Nadu for 12 days from October 7 as senior counsel Fali Nariman, appearing for the state, urged the bench not to pass an order which the State can’t implement. He told the court that even on earlier occasions, he had urged the court not to pass orders which Karnataka would find difficult to comply with but the court went ahead which subsequently created all the problems, and he had to face flak. As he asked on what basis the court had earlier directed Karnataka to release firstly 15,000 cusecs, then 12,000 cusecs and then 6,000 cusecs of water, the bench said” “We went by arithmetic”. “But arithmetic does not work with ground reality,” Nariman told the court, noting it was “just impossible” for Karnataka to do anything. “It is not just the government of Karnataka. It is about millions of people.” Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi reiterated that top court had no jurisdiction to direct the constitution of the board, citing material to back his contention. As the bench said it can still be set up, he said that it was a recommendation by the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal and the court can direct the CMB’s setting-up only if it converts that recommendation into a decision.

he Madras High Court has dismissed the public interest litigation (PIL) filed by social activist Traffic Ramaswamy seeking information about Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa’s health condition. The court dismissed the case on October 6 as the one filed for seeking publicity. Lid off ‘largest’ phone fraud scam
JOB TO ROB A
BY AJAI AGNIHOTRI
small time scam virtually started from Ahmedabad and by few enterprising Patel, cashing on the information obtained illegally – about some Indian immigrants in USA. The small time scam started four years back as cottage industry had its own home grown improvised scam of more than $50 million a year scam terrorizing more than 600,000 Indian American immigrants annually. A brother looted brother as they were aware of the weakness of immigrants of not confronting government agencies, in spite pay off and move on. In 2015 Sahil Patel, Nikita Natvarlal Patel and Satish Patel were arrested in the US for the similar charges as swindling and working as money collector in the US for the scammers in India. The Indian police are still trawling through all of the digital footprint of scammers from the 872 hard drives recovered in a police raid. Most of the accused employees were barely out of college, in few cases English- speaking minors, too. The busting of scam was a global news covered by Guardian of London to Wall Street Journal from New York. The average age group of the 772 arrested was 22 to 30 years. More than 125 women scammers were also arrested. In the history of the US in the last twenty years or since the inception of VOIP – Magic Jack or any such device, not so many people have been duped for so long, so much brazenly and so much of the dollar amount. US authorities have struggled to combat an epidemic of swindlers targeting taxpayers for the last three years. The Treasury Inspector general for Tax Administration, an IRS watchdog, said it has received more than 1.7 million complaints in the last three years. The Indian Police finally got success to bust the nexus of fraudsters and the ring of International tax liability collection fraud on October 5 in Mumbai, India. The police seized 872 of hard disks, high-end servers, laptops, computers, phishing software and other electronic device worth millions of dollars. Some of the electronic devices are banned in India. In the preliminary information obtained from the Mumbai police, one US- based company allegedly collected the victims’ personal information and sold them to call centers indulging in fraud. The data was sold for $ 2,000 for 10,000 names, addresses and telephone numbers. It is also suspected that a US national of Indian origin is suspected to be the kingpin of the scam and was continuously updating and improvising the scam script. He is also responsible for selecting, recruiting and monitoring the call Centers in India and back-end mules in the US to receive funds and transfer to India. More than 600,000 US citizens were robbed of their hard-earned money in the last three years by schemers from India for more than 50-60 million US Dollars annually. Most of these numbers are moderate and low in estimation as many victims did not report the crime to the police or IRS though IRS, FBI and many other agencies were aware of these ongoing frauds for the long time. The official sites of the agencies were listing these fraudulent calls, telephone numbers and modus operandi. Unfortunately, these information bites were based
on the crime reported by the victims. Hi India weekly newspaper, in its investigative report in 2014, had published a detailed report about this scam and warned all that this fraud was not going to stop till all the cumulative efforts are made by US authorities and Indian authorities with support from Consulates of India in the US. On October 5, at least 772 call center employees were nabbed by the Crime Branch of Thane District (suburb of Mumbai, India) from more than twelve call centers in Mumbai. On Mira Road in Mumbai-Hari Om IT Park, Universal Outsourcing Services and Oswal House, Delta Building in Penkar Pada Road, Naya Nagar, alone from three buildings, nine call centers were operating for extracting the money from US residents on the pretext of tax liability collections. The raid on these premises was planned and surgical, based on the confirmed and verified information-- a big contingent of policemen (more than 200) with utmost secrecy were assembled and a late-night raid was conducted on all the three buildings. The policemen raided seven premises on Mira Road masquerading as call centers in a massive operation. A total of 772 employees were rounded up and detained. Out of this, 70 were formally arrested and others were released but investigations against them are also going on. Those arrested so far include several of the alleged ring leaders, floor managers, as well as the people who provided equipment and helped set up the fake call centers. It is worthy to inform that India had been a major call center hub with foreign firms using its workers for everything from answering client calls to reading out train timetable or delivering IT support. India has already lost its call center crown to the Philippines and struggling for its share of global outsourcing market. The call centers provide a big chunk of employment to Indian youth in the range of many millions. The latest round of bust will hamper India’s efforts to obtain more outsourcing business and employment to youth.
The fraud scheme has been a complex network of many professional scammers involved in it. It has many folds of providers starting from 1. Data providers – names and telephone numbers of susceptible victims. 2. Magic jack and other VOIP device providers-these devices are only available in the US, but unfortunately does not require name and social security number verification. 3. The call center service providers. 4. Employee providers. 5. Training to employee to master the American names and impeccable accents. 6. The script providers--This script runs into six pages--which every employee has to muster and master before he is put on the ‘job to rob’. 7. Identify the prospective victim and his range of doling out money. 8. Closer as the supervisor or the floor manager is called to closed down on the deal. 9. Obtain the address of nearest Jewel or Walgreen to get prepaid money card
10. Take the sixteen-digit number on the card 11. Upload the funds into designated US bank account. 12. Runner as they are called—US-based-transfer the funds to India--in most cases 70% of the collect or transferred into account.
A recent improvisation has been observed in some cases, the call to victim has been spoofed to be originated from the nearby police station of his area/ city or the sheriff of the county or any other government agency of the US. According to many victims--Hi India interviewed them in 2014 and subsequently--informed that most of calls came on their cell phone and the caller was most of the time harsh, threatening and demanding. The caller will also try to work around and find an interpreter if victim has some handicap in understanding English. Mostly, the victims either understood English or Hindi and/or Gujarati, if required to close the deal an interpreter was also provided magnanimously. The victim will be informed that his/her taxes are not filed correctly and they have huge tax liability ranging from $5,000 to $25,000. It was also told to them that either they pay in full as victim has exhausted its recourse by not responding to many written communications. Finally, the supervisor or the so-called Deal Closer gets involved and closes the deal as final settlement with onetime payment in full. After the final settlement of amount, the victim is informed about the nearest Jewel or Walgreens or any of the convenience stores where these pre-paid cards are available. The victim is warned not to hang up on phone and walk or drive to the store, buy the card and give the numbers to scammer. Once the number is given, funds are siphoned off immediately and the victim feels relieved as he/she is congratulated by scammer of falling into a big trouble of going to court and jail. The caller always identified himself as IRS Officer, provided his ID number and then on the game of extortion starts with simple questioning of victims’ tax filings and they have defaulted on their tax payments and owed money. In most of the cases, the victims were threatened that if they do not comply, the local police or sheriff will arrest them and they will be on the way in 30 minutes or so. In some cases, it was seen that the victim receives a follow-up call which shows the name and number on the caller ID as of the local police. The scammers, ring leaders, floor managers and callers have all perfected the American accent, American tax laws, and job title of IRS agents, Americanized names and the psychology of the victims. The callers have had become so brazen that nobody can touch them and the scheme is so foolproof that they used to leave messages in the victim’s voice mails and if sometimes the victim recognized them as fraud, they used to abuse in native Indian languages as this was their last opportunity of robbing the victim. Once, the scammer proudly claimed in July that he garnered $ 60,000 from one victim alone. According to a police officer from Thane district, who raided the premises and was privy to information, on the condition of anonymity, informed that the scam, fraud and international gang of criminals were operating

money in bank account or buy pre-paid card. Such as Green Dot Money Pak. 16. Alternatively, get bank account details, wipe the account clean. 17. Often, such fraudsters make VOIP calls to leave no digital footprint behind. Sometimes call originated as from 911.
for more than three years in the bustling financial hub of India, Mumbai, and would have never come to light as one disgruntled, expelled employee of the call center spilled the beans and informed the police with minutest details and working of the cartel. He also informed the police that the network had spread across various cities in India, and maybe, to other countries, too. Even in Mumbai, more than 15 call centers are still under the radar for their similar activities. According to him, many call centers were opened at varying times in the last one year, with the latest one just a month ago. Most of the call centers did not have the requisite permission to operate, but flourished without raising any suspicion. The tip of the illegal business was received a fortnight ago and the police sent decoys to seven call centers and recorded the goings-on inside the call centers. The escape routes were sealed before the raid. He affirmed that an international racket could not have operated without conduits across oceans and collaborators to launder money through illegal channels. The IRS in its official website has classified the fraud under the annual “Dirty Dozen” list of scams in 2016. In many cases, victims or prospective targets have uploaded the recorded conversation online to warn people for future victimization.
To obtain employees for a fraud call center: 1. Advertisements on social media, stickers in local trains and flyers invited candidates without any qualification for call center work. 2. If a candidate shows potential, he is told to undergo rigorous training for US accent 3. A six-page script is handed to them for mock calls. After perfecting the script, the candidate is inducted as employee. 4. A small group of employees selected for closing the calls: they are trained to impersonate, intimidate, issue threats and extort money as supervisor or manager. Every victim was targeted by two callers and every caller had a daily target. 5. The US gang members transfer 70% of the money extorted to the call center management through suspected Hawala channels. 6. The employees are paid in cash. 7. Investigators still believe that this could be the tip of an iceberg and certain other operators are involved. 8. Further probe unraveled that Haider Ali Ayub Mansoori, Shaheen urf Hamza Iqbal Balesar, Kabir Vardhan, Ulhas Gupta, Arjun Naresh Vasudev, Abdullah Shaukat Zariwala, Johnson Supreme Dantosa, Govind Manoj
Thakur and Ankit Anil Gupta are nabbed and believed to be the owners of the operation/ call centers. A primary investigation has revealed that the database records had personal details of thousands of foreign and Indian nationals like their contact numbers, names, addresses and citizenships. These details were allegedly used to take victims into confidence. The victim is coaxed and exorted to pay. The call centers operated from 7pm till early next morning (to target victims in the US during the day). The same modus operandi is same but the different owners, different employees at different call centers. Hundreds of others are involved, believe investigating officers. It is being suspected that the gang and the kingpin are in Ahmedabad.
The typical work period for scammer started with: 1. Scour through the database and zero in on a victim, make some basic checks that victim has been interacted previously or not. 2. Do not target Americans. Primarily target immigrants. 3. Try to see if a third party (accountant) has filed taxes. Claims errors in taxes. 4. Scam starts now. Even check if any overseas transactions, including sending money to relatives in India, is involved. 5. Threat of arrest warrant is issued. 6. Use the software to mask the original number the scammer is calling from. 7. Spoof the caller ID to look like an IRS number. 8. Call up the victim, say s/he could soon be in trouble for defaulting on tax. 9. Reveal American sounding name, IRS badge number, and title and or ID number. 10. Reveal that you’re in the know of his/ her personal details, like home address and zip code. The zip code is asked to get the address of store nearby. 11. Depending on the response, play the empathy or threat card. 12. The manager (deal closer) settles for less as the warrant cancellation fees. 13. Scammer tries to keep victim on phone or speaker phone all the time. 14. Scammer justifies the money to be transferred to the restitutions PayPal account via pre-paid card. 15. Coax or extort him/her into depositing
The fraudsters use classic call scam technique: spoofed caller ID to look legitimate, use urgency and threat to keep caller on the line and force victim to act quickly. Leave behind different number for call backs and is used only for a limited time. Sometimes the spoofed number is IRS assistance number of 1- 800-8291040. Sometimes victim gets calls from the same area in order to entice and act. Typically, fraudsters are buying a large block of numbers from a VOIP provider to serve as their call back numbers. T h e f r a u d s t e r s a re c o n s t a n t l y decommissioning these call back numbers. The data collected by Pindrop, a company with global reputation of world’s largest collection of phone number data and activity, claimed in their research a great number of magic jack phone sales in recent months: in March 2016, 523 magic jacks were sold whereas in all of 2012, only 780 magic jack numbers were sold. Pindrop calculated the number of calls made during the march 2016 alone were more than 450,000 on magic jack telephone. Pindrop calculated the time it takes from calling to victim to close the deal typically 20 to 25 minutes. After interviewing many victims or narrowly saved victims, it resulted that this kind of scams can be reduced but it will take a lot of joint efforts and long time to eradicate the scam. In recent times, the scam has moved from government agency (IRS) to private agencies – Com Ed (Electric Company), Dish TV, Internet providers, home loans and many other such sorts. The scams and scammers never cease to exist, not limited to anyone country or any one particular mode of fraud. The scammers will keep on mushrooming. Here the social responsibility lies with from top (Consulate Office) to smallest organization –(Social, Religious, Cultural, Political) to educate people, inform people and have effective way to seek information, relief and advice before falling into trap. It was also baffling to many Indian American victims, for the non-existence of any support system or fall back from any Indian agency which can raise their concerns with Government of India, including Consulate Office in Chicago. They also worried about apathy of Consul General Office which other than issuing visas shows no remedy to avoid such scams.

mid the ongoing clamor around the cross-border tension between India and Pakistan, Bollywood celebrities are divided, with some coming out in support of the surgical strikes against Pakistan while some opposing the action. A police complaint was filed this week against veteran actor Om Puri for his comments that were found to be insulting to Indian soldiers by a section of the film industry. During a debate on a TV channel, Om Puri said: "Did we force them to join the army? My father was also in the army... We are proud of them (soldiers)... I am asking you: Do you want India and Pakistan to become Israel and Palestine? "I don't give a damn to Salman Khan or some other Khan... Go to

Pak to stop airing Indian content ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) has announced it will suspend the licences of media outlets airing Indian content without issuing prior notice. The media regulator has granted the authority to its Chairman Absar Alam to revoke or suspend the licenses of companies airing Indian content without any prior notice, a statement said. Previously, Pakistani channels were allowed to air six per cent content during 24-hour transmission cycle.
Nawazuddin denies allegations of torture NEW DELHI: Actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui on Sunday denied allegations of torture made against him and his family by his sister-in-law, N. Siddiqui and said that she has done it for publicity as he is a “soft target”. Celebrities including filmmaker Ashoke Pandit and veteran actor Anupam Kher came out against Om Puri after his comments on the channel. Kher tweeted that he respects Om a lot, but said watching him
on the TV show and hearing his views related to Indian soldiers was “very sad”. The film industry has been divided on the issue of banning Pakistani artistes in the wake of the September 18 Uri attack that left 19 Indian soldiers dead. nown to speak her heart out, actress Kangana Ranaut vented her anger publicly on the Roshans questioning that why Hrithik Roshan’s father had to come for his rescue after issues between her and the actor surfaced earlier this year. On being asked about Rakesh Roshan’s comment that someone is spreading lies against them, the “Queen” actress replied immediately, “No but I want to know why can’t Indian men stand up for themselves. He is a 43-year-old
son. Why his father has to come for his rescue always?” “For how long they will keep hiding behind their influential big names of father.” she added.
Aap agar shaadi mein jaao, aur baat Frontier ki karne lage, theek lagega? (If you go for a wedding, and talk about the Frontier, will it look nice?)... Be relevant to the occasion.” Singer Adnan Sami, who recently drew flak on Twitter for congratulating Indian soldiers on their surgical strikes across the Line of Control in Jammu and kashmir, says terrorism has no border. Veteran actress and politician Hema Malini said she does not support Pakistani artistes working in India. "I would like to say that I am 100 per cent with our jawans (soldiers) who are fighting and dying for our country and do not support Pakistan artistes working here. Jai Hind!" Hema tweeted. Actor Saif Ali Khan said cultural exchange should be encouraged and the onus lies on the government to decide who can or cannot work in the country.
PARIS: Production banner Yash Raj Films (YRF) will unveil the trailer of filmmaker Aditya Chopra’s upcoming movie “Befikre” at the Eiffel Tower on October 10. The trailer for the Ranveer Singh and Vaani Kapoor-starrer will be launched in collaboration with French authorities. Ranveer and Vaani will turn up in style for this first of its kind evening, saluting a fresh, celebratory and youthful love story, read a statement from the banner. “Befikre”, set to release on December 9, captures the Parisian spirit of freedom and impulsive living. The film will see Chopra in the director's chair after eight years. —IANS
Radhika Apte slams reporter MUMBAI: Actress Radhika Apte got angry with a media reporter for asking about the leaked nude scenes in her last release “Parched”. “Sorry, your question is very ridiculous. Controversies are made by the people like you. You saw the clip, you shared with other people, so you made the controversy,” she said at the launch of Swatch watches. Recently, the leaked intimate scene between Adil Hussain and Radhika from “Parched” created a big controversy. However, the makers said the film is much more than the scenes. Radhika has not been shy from speaking her mind. In an event, she said: “I am an artist... if I am required to do a cer-
tain job then I will do it. If you look at the world cinema and what people are doing abroad and that is too successfully then you would have not probably asked this question. —IANS
‘M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story’: Sushant is brilliant Film: “M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story”; Director: Neeraj Pandey; Cast: Sushant Singh Rajput, Kiara Advani, Disha Patani; Rating: **1/2
T
here is a moment of reckoning in Dhoni’s life when getting on that moving train would mean the difference between life and stillness. That metaphorical moment when Sushant Singh Rajput, playing Dhoni as though by birthright, jumps on that train, shot with astute honesty and gritty resplen-
dence by Santosh Thundiyil, is so brilliant in capturing the moment, that changes a life from ordinary to something extra, that greedily one waits for more such moments in
the vast stretches of storytelling that occupy the film. First things first. There is nothing ‘Untold’ in this three hour-plus sprawling paean to one of the most
iconic cricketers of our times. All we see for what seems like an eternity of playing-time are scene after scene from Dhoni’s life and career. All these incidents have been in the public domain for as long as we can remember. This film is an extremely clever amalgamation of two favorite national past times: cricket and patriotic jingoism. Director Neeraj Pandey adopts the voice of a serial director, going through episode after episode in Dhoni’s life with reverence . “The Untold Story”, some other time. — Subhash K. Jha

There has been a lot of conjecture about that. We are zeroing on episode one and will answer soon.”

But now after the Uri attack and India’s surgical attack reply, I strongly feel I should support my country and the soldiers fighting for our nation,” Jawkar told IANS. BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson announced that every Chicago police officer on patrol would be equipped with a body camera by 2018. “Body-worn cameras provide a rare glimpse into the dangerous situations Chicago police officers face every day in an effort to keep our communities safe. They will also assist in our efforts to provide better training and community relations in all of the diverse neighbourhoods we serve. This expansion is a win-win for the public and for officers,” Johnson said. The department launched a pilot program in the Shakespeare District in 2015, which was later expanded to four more districts. By 2018, every officer on patrol will be equipped with Taser Axon brand cameras. The department said that it will be investing in technology upgrades in order to accommodate hosting the video from the cameras. The program will cost about $8 million, Johnson said, being paid for from CPD’s operating budget and from grants.

Chicagoland salutes Mahatma Gandhi
BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- The Consulate General of India in Chicago, in collaboration with Mahatma G a n d h i Me m o r i a l Tr u s t , celebrated Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti on October 2. The birth anniversary of the Mahatma was celebrated on the Consulate premises with great fervor with many distinguished Indian-Americans attending the event. The celebration started with peace & harmony music. O P Meena, Consul, welcomed the guests. The opening remarks were delivered by D B Bhati, Acting Consul General who said that Gandhiji had influenced the course of world history in the 20th century by his leadership of the Indian freedom movement. “The Mahatma is still inspiring the people in the country as well as abroad through his legacy of non-violence and noble life. Word and deed must reflect each other. Gandhi had applied this principle in his life. Gandhi’s “Experiments with Truth” were applied by him both to the political sphere and to very personal affairs”, he said. Bhati added: “The personality of Mahatma Gandhi left a deep impact on the minds of all those who came in his contact. It was because of Gandhiji’s ideals that Albert Einstein mentioned about him that “Generations to come, will scarce believe that such a man as this one ever in flesh and blood walked upon this Earth.” The Acting Consul General also informed the participants about the inauguration of Pravasi Bharatiya Kendra by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He said that the centre was a tribute to the overseas Indian community;

CompareRemit.com makes it simpler
C
BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -CompareRemit.com, a leading remittance comparison site, has launched a newer and improved website recently. Equipped with a modernized design, the new CompareRemit site will also feature access to several additional corridors in the remittance world, helping users in the US and the UK compare and transfer money to India, the Philippines and Mexico. The website will be organized in a convenient fashion, where information will be displayed according to what the user would like to see; whether it’s best value, best rate, or fastest transfer, the user is able to cater the results to their specific needs. “Remittance should be simpler,” states CompareRemit CEO and president Rajeev Shrivastava, “and as we work with top-of-the-line remittance service providers, our mission is to provide the best value to our users as they send money abroad to family and friends. “What started off as a means to send money to India has now branched off into several corridors, including sending money from the US and the UK to India, Mexico and the Philippines, with many more money-sending corridors to come.”
C and commemorated their migration to various parts of the world, the challenges they faced abroad, their achievements and contributions. Over time, the Kendra is expected to develop into a hub of activities for sustainable, symbiotic and mutually rewarding economic, social and cultural engagements between India and its Diaspora. Bhati also appealed to the Indian diaspora to participate in Pravasi Bhartiya convention being organized at Bengaluru during January 7-9. A PowerPoint presentation on Mahatma Gandhi was given by Dr. Sri Ram Sonti with visuals drawn by Arvind Gunnapatel. US Congresswoman from Hawaii, Tulsi Gabbard, also attended the celebration and spoke about the relevance of principles of Mahatma Gandhi in her life. A 57-minute video of inauguration
of Pravasi Bhartiya Kendra by the Prime Minister was also screened. The Indian diaspora in Chicagoland appreciated the initiatives taken by the leadership of the current government for Pravashi Bhartiya. They also expressed their excitement to visit the PBK and to avail various facilities available at the Kendra. Celebrations in SkokieThe Gandhi Memorial Trust, in collaboration with the Consulate General of India in Chicago, organized a peace prayer at the Gandhi Statue located at Heritage Park, McCormick Blvd, Skokie on October 2. Bhati and Meena paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi by presenting a wreath on the Gandhi statue. Gabbard and Mayor of Skokie, Van Dusen also paid tribute to Gandhi ji. The Mayor of Skokie marked this special day in Skokie as Peace Day with his proclamation.

by the addition of hormone therapy,” said lead author Nataniel Lester-Coll from Yale Cancer Center in Britain. Biochemical failure is a rise in the blood level of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in prostate cancer patients after treatment with surgery or radiation. “Patient age, cardiac risk, and disease recurrence risk should be considered when selecting candidates for hormone therapy in this patient population,” Lester-Coll added. In the study, the Yale team analyzed data from patients aged 50, 60, and

Gene causing ear infection found

F NEW YORK: A team of researchers has identified a protein that enables a toxic natural aggregate to spread from cell to cell in the brain and reduce chances of Parkinson’s. Abnormal clumps of a-synuclein protein are often found in autopsies of people with Parkinson’s disease and are thought to cause the death of dopamine-producing brain cells. In the study published in the journal Science, researchers said the new findings hinge on how synuclein protein enters brain. —IANS
amily history and environment of the residential area are responsible for the differences between individual immune systems, a study has found. The study published in the journal Trends in Immunology, discusses what shapes our immune system and how it might be applied. The study has shown that air quality, food, stress levels, sleep patterns, and lifestyle choices had a strong combined effect on immune responses. “Diversity isn’t just programmed into our genes -- it emerges from how our genes respond to the environment,” said Adrian Liston, researcher at the Translational Immunology Laboratory, Belgium.
Long-term infections are responsible for most of the differences between individual immune systems. These interactions slowly change the cellular makeup of immune system and make it more sensitive
to that specific virus but also easier for other infections to slip past its defenses. Researchers have shown that ageing changes how our immune system responds to threats.
NEW YORK: A gene associated with an increased risk of children developing a common ear infection has been identified by US researchers. Middle-ear infection, or acute otitis media, is an ear infection that is usually caused by bacteria or viruses. Common symptoms include ear pain and fever and in some cases, it may also cause drainage of fluid from ear or hearing loss. —IANS

NEW YORK: Despite being less likely to experience suicidal ideation or depression, men are more likely to die by suicide than women, an Indian-origin researcher has found. Although men tend to choose more lethal methods than women, it was found that even when men and women try to kill themselves using the same method, men are still more likely to die. According to the study, possessing suicidal desire (due to conditions such as depression) alone is not sufficient for a lethal suicide attempt. It is imperative for an individual to have the acquired capability for suicide (ACS) along with suicidal desire in order to die by suicide. In a post titled “I Didn’t Wake Up Like This” for BuzzFeed India, Sonam delved uninhibitedly on the inhibitions and insecurities she harbored through her adolescence “wondering why my body looked nothing like it should”. Guide to pick loafers for autumn season IANS, NEW DELHI
I
t’s time to bid adieu to the hot summer season and to add different styles of loafers to your shoe closet, says an expert. Neha Kumthekar, co-founder of women shoe brand Oceedee, shares how: Classic loafer: Penny loafer in black or tan soft leather is a must-have this fall. Style them with pencil skirts for a more classic look or a casual denim and button down look. Backless loafer: Chic and comfortable, the backless loafers are the favorite silhouettes of the season.
From meetings in the office to drinks with friends, this style is your best round the clock option to be
both comfortable and stylish. Embellished loafer: Glam up your evening look with a pair of embell-
ished loafers. Add oomph to your outfit with loafer styles with elements like studs or tassels. Heeled loafer: The heeled loafers make a great option for those looking for a more feminine look borrowed from a classic boy style. A great alternative to the go to block heel pumps style. Pointed loafer: For everyone looking for a sleek and minimal style, a pair of pointed-toe loafer is the best stiletto alternative. Dress up a pair of pointed-toe loafer with a shirt and tailored pants for an elegant and comfortable work wear alternative.
