Las Vegas massacre:

Cops struggle to find shooting motive Some said the killer had mental illness history; no clear reason for the assault has been established yet

Girlfriend unaware of shooting plan LAS VEGAS: The girlfriend of Stephen Paddock, the Las Vegas gunman who killed 59 people, said she saw no signs that he was planning “something horrible” and was “devastated” by the attack. In her first public statement since the massacre, Marilou Danley, 62, said Paddock, a retired 64-year-old accountant, had sent her on a trip to the Philippines and wired her money there but she was unaware of any attack, The New York Times reported. Danley said Paddock “never said anything to me, or took any action that I was aware of, that I understood in any way to be a warning that something horrible like this was going to happen”. Danley said she had voluntarily flown back to the US because investigators wanted to talk to her. Danley lived with Paddock in Mesquite, Nevada. — IANS

Some investigators said Paddock had a history of mental illness, but there was no confirmation of this. The killer’s brother, Eric Paddock, said he was “in shock, horrified, completely dumbfounded”.

Tillerson denies resignation reports S Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said that he has no plans to resign and will not do so and reaffirmed his commitment towards President Donald Trump, the media reported. At a State Department press conference this week, Tillerson also denied reports that Vice President Mike Pence had to urge him to stay in the job and sidestepped questions about whether he called Trump a “moron”, reports CNN.

S President Donald Trump said here this week that authorities in Puerto Rico should be praised for keeping down the loss of life from Hurricane Maria, which is blamed for 16 deaths on the island. “Sixteen versus in the thousands,” Trump said, comparing the Maria death toll with the “thousands” who perished in 2005 as a result of “a real catastrophe like Hurricane Katrina.” Katrina killed 1,833 people, mostly in catastrophic flooding that followed the failure of the levees in New Orleans, Efe reported. “You can be very proud of your people and all of our people working together,” the president said on his first visit to Puerto Rico since Maria struck on Sept. 20 as a Category 4 hurricane that knocked out power, water and telecommunications service. LAS VEGAS: US President Donald Trump, who visited Las Vegas this week to meet the survivors of the deadliest shooting in America, avoided the topic of gun control while addressing the media. Trump met with local politicians, first responders and survivors of the shooting that killed 58 people and injured more than 500 others, CNN reported. While Washington lawmakers have been facing questions about possible gun control measures in the wake of the

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.

“The Vice President has never had to persuade me to remain as secretary of state because I have never considered leaving this post,”

Tillerson said. His remarks were part of an administration wide effort to dismiss an NBC article in which aides described Tillerson calling the US President a moron and his “fury” about the ways the President has undermined him publicly on several foreign policy initiatives. Calling the report “erroneous”, Tillerson pointed the finger at “some who try to sow dissension” to undermine the President’s agenda. The President said he had “total confidence” in Tillerson.

Google, Facebook, Twitter failed to curb fake news IANS, SAN FRANCISCO

T

echnology giants Google, Facebook and Twitter failed miserably to stop publishing fake news related to Las Vegas massacre in which at least 59 people died and over 400 injured, media reported this week. According to a report in technology website Siliconbeat, Google returned a search result from a shady online forum “4chan” that

named the wrong man as killer. “While Facebook’s ‘Safety Check’ feature confronted users with far-right blogs that spat out false information about victims and the shooter, Twitter displayed false rumours and information about ‘missing’ people who were

not connected to the episode,” the report said. Google later acknowledged that it had been briefly surfacing an inaccurate ‘4chan’ website in its Search results. “The fake news was algorithmically replaced by relevant results within hours. This should not have appeared for any queries, and we’ll continue to make algorithmic improvements to prevent this from happening in the future,” Google said.

T

he Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Wednesday lowered the country’s growth projection for 2017-18, pegging the Gross Value Added (GVA) at 6.7 percent. The central bank had earlier estimated India’s GVA to grow in 2017-18 at 7.3 percent. Taking into account various factors during the fiscal, the RBI said: “The projection of real GVA growth for 2017-18 has been revised down to 6.7 percent from the August 2017 projection of 7.3 percent, with risks evenly balanced.” GVA is considered a more accurate index of growth as it excludes the component of taxes and subsidies that go into calculation of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Ivanka Trump to be in Suicide attackers kill BSF trooper Hyderabad for two days IANS, SRINAGAR

HYDERABAD: President Donald Trump’s daughter and White House advisor Ivanka Trump (in picture) will be in Hyderabad for two days to attend the Global Entrepreneurship Summit (GES) next month, a top US official said on Thursday. Ivanka will speak at the inaugural session along with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the evening of November 28 and will also remain at the event for part of the next day. However, it is yet to be decided if she will also visit some other Indian city. Jennifer Arangio, Senior Director for International Organizations and Alliances at the US National Security Council, told reporters here that Ivanka will arrive in Hyderabad on November 28 to attend the GES but it is yet to be decided if she will fly back straight to the US from here. Asked about Ivanka’s other engagements in Hyderabad, Arangio said the visit would only be focussed on the summit. The official said Ivanka would be an active participant at the GES. “Women’s economic empowerment and entrepreneurship are two signature issues she knows quite well. As you know she was instrumental in the We-Fi initiative launched by the World Bank,” she said referring to the Women Entrepreneurs Finance Initiative (We-Fi) launched in July. To be held at the Hyderabad International Convention Centre (HICC) here, the GES will bring together

1,200 entrepreneurs, investors and ecosystem supporters for two-andhalf days of training and mentoring sessions, networking and investment matchmaking. The summit with the theme ‘Women first, prosperity for all’ will be attended by 400 entrepreneurs from the US, 400 from India and 400 from rest of the world, Arangio said. She said while traditionally GES was an education and networking summit, the real objective is to bring dynamic entrepreneurs, investors and ecosystem drivers together so that they get inspired, matchup with potential investment opportunities and after going back home drive their ideas to the next level. Hyderabad has 130 American companies.

uicide attackers of the Pakistan-based JeM terror group stormed a BSF camp with guns and explosives near the Srinagar airport on Tuesday morning, triggering battles that left all three attackers and a trooper dead. Four BSF troopers were injured and were hospitalized. The militants, dressed in military fatigues, broke into the 182 Battalion Border Security Force camp in Humhama area at around 4.30 a.m. The BSF camp shares a wall with an Air Force station and is located in a hilly region. The attackers breached four layers of security in the highly-protected zone which houses many of Jammu and Kashmir’s Who’s Who.

The audacious attack claimed by the Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) — led by Masood Azhar, who is based in Pakistan and is one of the most wanted militants in India — is being compared to the January 2016 strike at the Pathankot airbase

in Punjab. This is the first militant attack in nearly 30 years so close to the airport. Officials said the militants fired indiscriminately and threw grenades at security pickets before entering the BSF camp.

2014 victory now seems far for BJP Among the main causes of worry is absence of jobs and economic slowdown which may not be a 'transient' phenomenon AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI

I

t has taken over three years for Narendra Modi to realize that a presidential style of governance is not suitable for a country of India’s size and complexity. The Prime Minister may have found it easy to preside over Gujarat’s destiny with his personalized style of politics where he was a cut above the others in the government and party. However, India is different. Hence his decision to set up an Economic Advisory Council to assist him in the framing of policy instead of pursuing an agenda is in accordance with his own instincts and with inputs from the Finance Minister and the Chief Economic Adviser. If anything substantiates the dire prognosis of former Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on the economy, it is the roping in of experts from outside Modi’s charmed circle. What it also shows is the non-fulfilment — at least for the present — of the expectation of “vikas” which was Modi’s trump card in 2014.

From Mulk Raj Anand to Sarojini Naidu, Dominique Lapierre to George Orwell and Khuswant Singh to V.S. Naipaul, most of the writers have referred to the life of “Bapu” in their works.

Ironically, one of the reasons for the hopes turning sour is another of Modi’s purported trump cards — demonetization — which, along with the clumsy rolling out of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), is now being held largely responsible for the current economic woes. It is obvious that if the government had a team of experts earlier who were not overawed by the

immediately after its announcement since the Prime Minister is generally widely trusted and large sections believed that the hoarders of illegal funds were running for cover. But it was a short-term gain, for the economic downturn has shown that there’s more to governance than political showmanship. As a result, the one-step-forward of the demonetization has been fol-

Modi’s recent endeavors have been to project himself as pro-poor after Rahul Gandhi’s jibes about the government being a ‘suit-boot ki sarkar’ Prime Minister, then there would not have been any demonetization if only because it was a step guided more by politics than economics. The objective of the hugely disruptive step was to show Modi’s resolve to tackle the problem of black money in view of the government’s inability to deposit the promised Rs 1.5 million in every bank account by busting the parallel economy. As a political initiative, demonetization was a success in the weeks

lowed by the two-steps-backward of a tacit admission that it takes more than one person to run a government, no matter how energetic he may be or how impressive an orator. However, the pitfalls of an individualistic style have been evident earlier too. For instance, Modi realized within a year of assuming power that a pro-capitalist image does not sell well among the ordinary people for whom businessmen are associated more with profit than popular welfare.

Within a year of assuming power, Prime Minister Narendra Modi realized that a pro-capitalist image does not sell well among the ordinary people.

It is not surprising, therefore, that the Prime Minister’s recent endeavours have been to project himself as pro-poor in the aftermath of Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi’s jibes about the government being a “suit-boot ki sarkar”. Among the main causes of worry is the absence of jobs, coupled with the State Bank of India’s view that the economic slowdown may not be a “transient” phenomenon and is

certainly not a “technical” glitch, as BJP president Amit Shah has said. The phenomenon of jobless growth has changed, therefore, into one of few jobs and hardly any growth. However, as even a pro-BJP economist pointed out, an economic council will be unable to suggest the possibility of an immediate turnaround since its panaceas will all have long gestation periods.

Gandhi — a never-ending inspiration in literature Be it poetry, prose or drama; fiction or nonfiction, Mahatma Gandhi is everywhere, even 70 years after his death SAKET SUMAN, NEW DELHI

C

reativity and inspiration are the two defining factors for most writers and their craft. But while creativity is largely the process of generating original ideas, inspiration is random. Sometimes it comes from the simplest of things. Like the life of Mahatma Gandhi. Poetry, prose or drama; fiction or nonfiction — Gandhi is everywhere. There are indeed only a handful of iconic personalities who have caught the imaginations of as many writers as Gandhi has. And one is wonderstruck at the diverse set of books that have been written on him or are inspired by him. Even 70 years after his death, the process has not stopped.

From Mulk Raj Anand to Sarojini Naidu, Dominique Lapierre to George Orwell and Khuswant Singh to V.S. Naipaul, almost all “during-Gandhi”, “post-Gandhi” and contemporary writers have somewhere referred to the life of “Bapu” in their works. They have brought different interpretations to his sayings, sketched fictional characters on his principles and composed verses on his thoughts. Sarojini Naidu, in her sonnet on Gandhi, describes him as an eternal lotus who is a source of guidance and strength for billions: “O mystic Lotus, sacred and sublime/ In myriad-petalled grace inviolate/ Supreme o’er transient storms of tragic Fate/ Deep-rooted in the waters of all Time...” But Indian writing on Gandhi

and Gandhism has also undergone tremendous change during this process. Gandhian scholar Vashist Bhardwaj finds the works of R.K. Narayan critical for his exploration of Gandhi as subject. “Known for his direct approach in handling his subjects, in Gandhi’s case too, Narayan has used his wit at its best to ‘demahatmize’ Gandhism. For instance, Gandhi is seen as an oblivious yet dominating character in ‘Waiting for Mahatma’ with eyes closed to what is around and busy playing the dynamics of ‘self’. In Narayan’s ‘The Vendor of Sweets’ too, Jagan, the protagonist, comes across a hypocrite Gandhian, symbolizing Gandhi’s failure to reach the masses,” Bhardwaj noted.

MADRID: A Spanish National Court judge on Wednesday called the head of the regional Catalan police and two pro-independence figureheads to give testimony in a probe into allegations of sedition. National court judge Carmen Lamela called on Mossos d’Esquadra police force Major Josep Lluis Trapero and the presidents of two of Catalonia’s powerful pro-independence organizations -- Jordi Sánchez of the Catalan National Assembly and Jordi Ciuxart of Omnium Cultural -- to appear in court on Friday, judicial sources told Efe news. “They have broken the democratic principles of the rule of law. Today, the Catalan society is fractured,” the king said, warning that the poll could put at risk the economy of the wealthy north-eastern region and the whole of Spain. But he stressed that Spain “will overcome difficult times”. The Spanish government has described the referendum as illegal. The Catalan government said that there will be an “extraordinary meeting” of parliament on October 9 to discuss the outcome of Sunday’s disputed referendum, BBC reported. According to Catalan officials, more than 2.2 million people voted on Sunday and that nearly 90 per cent of them backed independence. The turnout has been estimated at 42 per cent. Nearly 900 people were hurt as police violently tried to enforce a Spanish court order suspending the vote, which the government had declared illegal.

Nawaz Sharif returns as PML-N President O IANS, ISLAMABAD

usted Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif made a comeback on Tuesday as head of Pakistan’s ruling PML-N through a controversial legal reform, more than two months after he was disqualified from holding office by the country’s apex court on charges of corruption in the Panama Papers case. He was elected unopposed a day after the National Assembly dropped a clause from the “Election

Act 2017” which prohibited disqualified Members of Parliament from becoming leaders of political parties. The Pakistan Muslim LeagueNawaz used its majority in Parliament to pass the reform amid protests from opposition members who tore copies of the bill and said they will challenge the reform in court, Dawn online reported. T

he future of the AIADMK government in Tamil Nadu may be known on October 9 when the Madras High Court takes up again the petition by the party’s 18 rebel MLAs challenging their disqualification. Posting the matter for October 9, Justice K. Ravichandra Babu asked all the sides to be present and not to seek any adjournment. The judge also ruled that the previous orders — barring a floor test by Chief Minister K. Palaniswami and conduct of fresh by-elections in 18 constituencies notified by the Speaker to the Election Commission — will continue till the case was decided. Congress leader and Supreme Court advocate Ahishesk Manu Singhvi, representing the camp of dissident AIADMK leader T.T.V. Dinakaran, told the court that the

When the matter came up before Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice M. Sundar, petitioner P.A. Joseph argued that the commission should be set up only after an unanimous resolution was passed in the state Assembly. “The present impugned government’s order are illegal and passed in a mechanical manner without following the mandatory procedure as contemplated under section 3 of Commission of Inquiry Act, 1952,” his counsel E. The case took a curious turn after the Panneerselvam faction and the faction headed by Chief Minister Edappadi K.Palaniswami merged early last month and decided to remove Sasikala and Dinakaran from the posts of General Secretary and Deputy General Secretary, respectively. The remake, to be directed by Neelakanta Reddy, has been titled Queen Once Again. “It’s an exciting project and I love doing roles that talk about women empowerment. alayalam superstar Dileep, arrested for alleged involvement in the conspiracy behind the kidnapping of an actress, was this week granted bail by the Kerala High Court and was reinstated as President of the powerful body of film exhibitors. The decision was taken at a hurriedly called executive meeting of the Film Exhibitors United Organization of Kerala (FEUOK). Antony Perumbavoor, who took over as FEUOK President in July after Dileep’s arrest, told media persons later that the meeting decided to reinstate the superstar as chief of the film body that was formed in January, earlier this year.

After spending 85 days in judicial custody, actor Dileep drove to his home this week.

On the evening of October 3, Dileep was released on bail and drove to his home, after spending 85 days in judicial custody.

A stream of film personalities, including actors, producers and directors called on Dileep, but the actor refused to speak to the media

“The truth is, I have never met the lady in question one-on-one in my entire life. Yes, we have worked together, but there has been no meeting in private. That’s the truth,” he said. He added he was

The row began last year when Kangana hinted at Hrithik being her “ex-boyfriend”. She said in an interview that she fails to understand “why exes do silly things to get your attention”. The actress lodged a legal complaint against Hrithik for “misusing” the confidential emails and photographs of the time when they were together.

‘Judwaa 2’: This sequel is better than the original

I

n our country we revere the dead. And disrespect the urge to laugh and have fun. Judwaa too reminds us how enjoyable frivolity in cinema can be if packaged and executed expertly. When a 20-year-old film about identical twins caught in a rough hour traffic of endearing inanity is rebooted, we immediately start getting emotional about the old film which incidentally, was trashed on release. We even begin to treat Anu Malik’s pedestrian tunes in the original as classics. There is news for all nostalgia addicts. “Judwaa 2” is not only a more engaging ode to inanity than the original, but Varun Dhawan

Film: “Judwaa 2”; Cast: Varun Dhawan, Jacqueline Fernandez, Tapsee Pannu, Anupam Kher; Director: David Dhawan; Rating: ***1/2

even manages to outdistance Salman Khan’s considerable energy level in the original, conveying a

certain innocence in his body language that is the opposite of sexual candor.

What works bigtime for this sorted remake is its absolute honesty of intention. David Dhawan wants to entertain as he has been doing for decades. There is no socio-cultural political agenda (not counting a super-dumb reference to Donald Trump), no attempt to induce gravity into the binge of silliness. The point is the pointlessness. The prattle and the preening is all

so frenetic, we get no time to think. We just go with the flow. And flow with the glow and sparkle that father-son Dhawan generate together. On that perilous level of utter abandon, “Judwaa 2” hangs by a slender thread unwilling to let go even a stray moment of potential pleasurability. The film’s obstinacy to win you over with a feast of fatuousness breaks down our defenses after a while. “Judwaa 2” is the kind of massy rabble-rouser that we don’t see in mainstream cinema any more. We either have “realistic” romcoms set in small towns or wannabe Hollywood spectacles which go nowhere with their egoistic ambitions.

BY A STAFF WRITER ASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi has released a statement in response to the provision in the Republican tax plan which would eliminate the deductibility of state and local taxes: “While many elements of tax reform may be debatable, the importance of the State and Local Tax (SALT) Deduction to the people of Illinois is not. That’s why I’m calling on all my colleagues representing our state to join me in rejecting the current proposal to raise taxes on working families in Illinois by eliminating this essential deduction. “Working families across the state depend on the SALT deduction to ensure that they are not double-taxed to pay for state and local services. Thousands of taxpayers in my district use the SALT deduction to save thousands of dollars per year. The average resident of Cook County saves $4,176 through this deduction while Kane County residents save $5,048. In DuPage County, the average taxpayer saves $6,637 annually through the SALT deduction. “I call on all my Illinois colleagues to reject the elimination of the SALT deduction. Indian to stand trial in sexting case BY A STAFF WRITER NDIANAPLIS, IN -- The Indiana Supreme Court ruled recently that Sameer Thakar will stand trial in the case of his alleged sexting to a 16-year-old girl. Sameer Thakar The court ruled unanimously with a 5-0 vote that Thakar, an Indian American former teacher at North Central High School in Indianapolis, will go to trial for allegedly sending a nude photo of himself to the teenaged girl from Oregon in 2014. If convicted, Thakar could spend up to three years behind bars. The ruling is surprising in that the state says it is legal to have sex with a 16-year-old, though sexting nude photos to a minor is not. Thakar allegedly sent the photo to the girl after they discussed her age, and she told him she wished she were 18. He later confessed to the police that he had a problem with chatting online. The Indian American has been charged with a felony count of disseminating matter harmful materials to a minor. The charge was originally dismissed last year on the basis that the state’s dissemination statute was vague because the age of consent for sex in Indiana is 16. While an appeals court upheld the dismissal, the state’s top court disagreed. The Supreme Court judges acknowledged that while the laws may seem inconsistent, there’s no conflict between them because it’s still possible to follow both simultaneously.

The Navratri celebration marked the festival of nine nights during which Hindus worship Goddess of Shakti Durga, Lakshmi and Saraswati. IACFNJ held this year’s Garba in a state-of-the-art gymnasium at South Brunswick High School in a highly-secured environment where more than 6,000 people enjoyed the three days of colorful festivities to mark the cultural and religious significance of Navratri for Hindus. The response of South Asians from North Brunswick, Franklin Park, Princeton, Hightstown, Princeton Junction, Monroe, East Brunswick, Robbinsville and East and West Windsor was very overwhelming. But the organizers did an outstanding job to process everyone as quickly as possible, so that everyone can enjoy five hours of garba,

the holy ashes of Pramukh Swami in Niagara Falls (Canada), and the Hudson River (NY) as a tribute to his Guru’s social and spiritual service in North America. On September 5, 2017, Mahant Swami also met with former President Barack Obama. During the meeting with former President Obama, Mahant Swami highlighted BAPS’ work to encourage the Indian-American community to more fully participate in civic life and how organizations like BAPS and the Obama Foundation can work to inspire young leaders to take up the call of public service through programs such as scholarships for students aspiring for careers in public service. Daycare pays up $3m for medicaid fraud BY A STAFF WRITER DISON, NJ -- The US Attorney’s Office in the District of New Jersey on September 27 announced that Edison, NJ-based Edison Adult Medical Daycare, its former owner Dinesh Patel and current owners Daxa Patel and Satish Mehtani have agreed to pay the US and the state of New Jersey nearly $3 million to settle a case that claimed the daycare violated the False Claims Act. Acting US Attorney William Fitzpatrick made the announcement of the settlement agreement stemming from allegations that the daycare improperly billed and received payments from Medicaid despite Dinesh Patel having been excluded from participating in Medicaid following his 2012 conviction for accepting kickbacks. In total, the three Indian American accused agreed to pay $2.72 million. The settlement resolves federal and state government allegations that from March 17, 2012, through August 4, 2015, Dinesh

Patel violated his exclusion by not ceasing his involvement in the adult daycare facility, and that the daycare violated the False Claims Act by submitting claims to and receiving payments from Medicaid while Dinesh Patel directed, managed and supervised activities at Edison. had full knowledge that Dinesh Patel was managing the daycare while he was an excluded Medicaid provider. In addition to the settlement payment, Dinesh Patel has also agreed to another five-year exclusion precluding him from participating in all federal health care programs, including Medicaid and Medicare, until 2022.

In May 2016, Bera pleaded guilty to two counts of violating federal campaign finance laws. The US Attorney’s Office dropped a second investigation against Rep. Ami Bera’s possible involvement in the fraud, saying in a statement last September that no other charges would be sought in the matter. It also did not file charges against Kanta.

ijaya Dashmi, or Dussehra, marking the victory of Lord Rama over Ravana and symbolizing the triumph of good over evil, was celebrated with fervour across the country. In New Delhi, before burning the effigy of Ravana at the Subhash Maidan opposite Red Fort, Prime Minister Narendra Modi exhorted the citizens to see festivals as source of inspiration to do something positive for society as he underlined their social relevance. In Punjab and Haryana, a festive spirit prevailed at all places including Amritsar, Ludhiana, Patiala, Bathinda, Jalandhar and Gurdaspur (all in Punjab); Ambala, Hisar, Rohtak and Karnal (all in Haryana) and in Chandigarh where the burning of Ravana effigies was organized. Interestingly, effigies of babas or self-styled godmen were included among the effigies of Ravana and others at some places this time to highlight the wrong-doings of these babas who take people for a ride in the name of religion. On some of the effigies of godmen, the photograph of Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, the disgraced

chief of Dera Sacha Sauda sect who was recently convicted and sentenced to 20 years imprisonment for rape of two female disciples, was put up. In Haryana, the tallest Ravana at 210 feet was put up at Barala near Ambala. In West Bengal, devotees thronged marquees and community pujas to bid farewell to Goddess Durga on Vijaya Dashami, the last day of the Durga Puja festival. With anticipation of the homecoming of the deity next year, married women decked in the ritualis-

tic red-and-white saris marked the event with the customary “Sindoor Khela” or smearing each other and the idols with red vermillion to prepare Goddess Durga and her four children — Lakshmi, Saraswati, Ganesha and Kartik — for their return to their heavenly abode on Mount Kailash. As part of the observances, enthusiasts cutting across religious and age barriers indulged in “dhunuchi naach” — dancing to the beat of the ‘dhaak’ (drums) holding aloft earthen bowls

KOLKATA: Highlighting communal harmony, railing against terrorism and bringing diverse themes like the intricacies of human mind and the spirit of freedom to the fore, 68 community Durga puja organizers paraded their award-winning idols in the West Bengal government organized carnival here this week. The carnival, a brainchild of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, in its second year, showcased the prominent idols from the city and the adjoining districts in a colorful road show at the iconic Red Road here, amid tight security. The three hour long event saw the puja organizers also exhibiting

samples of various artistic creations used in their puja marquees on vibrantly decorated tableaux. All the community pujas selected for the road show, were winners of Bengal’s ‘Biswa Bangla Sharad Samman’ award falling under various categories.

Men, women and children gathered in puja pandals and took part in the rituals performed by the priests and took blessings. In Karnataka’s cultural capital Mysuru, about one million people had gathered for the victory parade to mark the culmination of the Dasara festival.

T

hree American scientists have won the 2017 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for unravelling secrets of how the body’s internal clock or circadian rhythm works — a discovery that will help doctors understand the mechanism behind sleep patterns, hormone release, blood pressure and body temperature. Jeffrey C. Hall, Michael Rosbash and Michael W. Young were able to peek inside the human biological clock and elucidate its inner

workings, the Nobel Prize committee said in a statement this week. The winners will share a prize of 825,000 British pounds. “Their discoveries explain how plants, animals and humans adapt their biological rhythm so that it is synchronized with the Earth’s revolutions,” said the Nobel Assembly at Sweden’s Karolinska Institutet. The research conducted on fruit flies isolated the “period” gene that controls the normal daily biological rhythm. This gene contained instructions for making a protein called “PER”. As per the Sample Registration System (SRS) Bulletin, last year, the IMR only saw a two point decline. “Not only this, India also recorded a major drop in birth cohort, which has for the first time come down to below 25 million. India has registered 90,000 fewer infant deaths in 2016 as compared to 2015. The total number of estimated infant deaths have come

This test can prevent unnecessary chemotherapy LONDON: Researchers have developed a new test that can predict the return of the cancer, thus sparing breast cancer patients from unnecessary chemotherapy. The test, called Oncotype DX, analyzes the samples of tumor that is removed during surgery and provides a score between one and 100 on the likelihood of the cancer returning. “Thousands of women are undergoing unnecessary chemotherapy because of the failure to make this available to everyone,” Professor Nigel Bundred, a leading breast

In 2002, Hall became associated with the University of Maine. Michael Young was born in Miami and worked at Rockefeller University in New York. India’s IMR declined in 2016: Govt IANS, NEW DELHI

LONDON: Researchers have shown that gene therapy might help reverse blindness by reprogramming cells at the back of the eye to become light sensitive. Retinitis pigmentosa — the most common cause of blindness in young people — occurs mostly due to loss of millions of light sensitive photoreceptor cells that line the retina. The remaining retinal nerve cells, which are not light sensitive, however, remain in the eye which can be treated using gene therapy.

cancer surgeon at the hospital, was quoted as saying by express.co.uk. The test is suitable for women, who have a hormone-driven breast cancer type known as Oestrogen receptor positive HER2 negative which accounts for most breast cancer patients.

down from 9,30,000 (9.3 lakhs) in 2015 to 8,40,000 (8.4 laks) in 2016,” said the statement. SRS Bulletin says that the gen-

der gap in India for child survival is reducing steadily. “The gender difference between female and male IMR has now

reduced to less than 10 percent giving a major boost to the ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ scheme of the Government,” said the statement, adding that its strategic approach has started yielding dividends and the efforts of focusing on low performing states is paying off. “Among the Empowered Action Group states and Assam, all states except Uttarakhand have reported decline in IMR in comparison to 2015. The decline is reported as four points in Bihar, three points in Assam, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand and two points decline in Chhattisgarh, Odisha and Rajasthan,” said the statement.

How to keep your heart healthy RACHEL V. THOMAS, NEW DELHI

W

hile advancing age increases the risk of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD), living a healthy life from your youth may help prevent the disease, which is touted as the number one killer in both men and women globally as well as in India, experts suggest. CVDs (coronary heart disease, stroke and hypertension) contribute to 45 percent of non-communicable disease-related deaths followed by chronic respiratory disease (22 percent), cancers (12 percent) and diabetes (three percent), suggests World Health Organization (WHO).

Nearly 80 percent of premature heart attacks and strokes are preventable, but the preventive measures should begin early. “Preventive measures like avoiding of smoking, taking healthy diet, regular exercise, maintaining an ideal weight, blood pressure, blood

sugar and cholesterol levels should begin from a very young age,” Tapan Ghose, Director and Head, Department of Cardiology, at Fortis Flt Lt Rajan Dhall Hospital, told IANS. Heart disease is caused by buildup of fats, cholesterol and other substances in and on the artery walls — called atherosclerosis. This build-up begins from a young age and leads to blockage where the heart is unable to pump enough blood to meet the requirement of the body’s tissues. This results in various disorders of the heart and blood vessels. Typical symptoms include “chest pain or angina, breathlessness, palpitations, sweating, epigastric pain,” Ghose added.
