Apple: No more iPods

United States passes one million Covid deaths The US has passed more than one million Covid-related deaths, says the White House

HiIndia Newsdesk

The iPod began with a modest goal: Let’s create a music product that makes people want to buy more Macintosh computers. Within a few years, it would change consumer electronics and the music industry and lead to Apple becoming the most valuable company in the world. First arriving in October 2001, the pocket-size rectangle with a white face and polished steel frame weighed 6.5 ounces. It came packaged with white earbuds in a custom colour, moon grey, and held 1,000 songs. On Tuesday, Apple officially said goodbye to all that. The company announced it had phased out production of its iPod Touch, bringing an end to a two-decade run of a product line that inspired the creation of the iPhone and helped turn Silicon Valley into the epicentre of global capitalism.

US House approves Ukraine aid

HiIndia Newsdesk

President Joe Biden is ordering that flags be flown at half-staff to mark the milestone. It’s the highest official total in the world - although the World Health Organization believes the true death toll may be much higher elsewhere. The US has also recorded more than 80 million Covid cases, out of a 330 million population. The first confirmed case was reported on 20 January 2020, when a man flew home to Seattle from Wuhan in China. The 35-year-old survived, after 10 days

of pneumonia, coughs, fever, nausea and vomiting. But deaths began to be reported just a few weeks later. In the two years since, death rates have ebbed and flowed as waves of the virus swept across the country - reaching highs of more than 4,000 a day in early 2021. Public health experts give several reasons for the high US death toll including high rates of obesity and hypertension, overworked hospital systems, some vaccine hesitancy and a large older population.

With intelligence officials warning that Moscow is counting on a protracted war in Ukraine to drain the determination of the US and its allies, Congress has forged ahead with overwhelming support in deepening the US’s commitment. The House voted 368 to 57 in favour of a $39.8 billion aid package for Ukraine late on Tuesday, bringing the total US financial commitment to roughly $53 billion over two months. There was little resistance from lawmakers from both sides of the aisle who had previously been critical of costly US involvement in overseas conflicts. The Senate still needs to vote on the proposal. While Russia appeared to be nearing one of its stated aims, complete control of the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine, top US intelligence officials said that would neither satisfy President Putin of Russia nor bring the war to an end.

US gasoline prices hit a high, but the oil market may signal relief

HiIndia Newsdesk

With the summer driving season approaching, the national average price for regular gasoline soared Tuesday to a nominal record of $4.37 a gallon. But relief may be on the way, with oil prices

falling below $100 a barrel, a drop of roughly 10% since the weekend. It can take a week for prices at the pump to reflect the gyrations of the crude oil price, which has dropped from more than $120 for West Texas intermediate, the US benchmark, in March. It ended Tuesday at $99.76. That weakness reflects a slowing of the Chinese economy because of a lockdown of several cities combating the Covid-19 pandemic, along with a growing consensus among traders that the global economy is also slowing.

Joe Biden says Fed targeting inflation HiIndia Newsdesk

US President Joe Biden, under pressure to tame high inflation, told Americans on Tuesday that he understands what they are grappling with and that he and the US Federal Reserve are working to solve the top issue weighing on his administration. “They’re frustrated,” Biden said of Americans paying more for goods and services across the board. “I don’t blame them.” The president did not announce new policy measures in the speech, which took place a day before new consumer price data is expected to show inflation remained elevated through April.

Indian Army To Buy 12 More Weapon- Ro Khanna Urges US to Increase Arms Locating Radars For China Border New Delhi: India’s retail inflation surged to 7.79 per cent in April, largely driven by rising fuel and food prices, government data showed on Thursday. The consumer pricebased inflation figure stayed well above Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI’s) upper tolerance limit for a fourth consecutive month. RBI has been mandated by the Centre to keep the retail inflation between 2 per cent to 6 per cent. In March, the retail inflation stood at 6.95 per cent. Food inflation, which accounts for nearly half the consumer price index (CPI) basket, reached a multi-month high in April and can remain elevated due to higher vegetable and cooking oil prices globally. RBI mainly considers the retail inflation figure while arriving at its bi-monthly policy decision.

The Indian Army has been using weapon locating radars for its operations along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir. HiIndia Newsdesk

New Delhi: The Army is looking to acquire 12 made-in-India weapon locating radars, which would add significantly to its defences along the China front. The system, called the Swathi, enables soldiers to automatically detect the location from where enemy weapons like mortars, shells and rockets are being fired upto a distance of 50 kilometres. The system is capable of simultaneously detecting multiple projectiles which

have been fired towards friendly positions. Knowing the location of enemy weapons such as artillery guns enables the Army to launch a counterstrike to take them out. The Swathi radars, which have been developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation and built by Bharat Electronics Limited, will likely cost the ex-chequer Rs.1000 crores if the acquisition is cleared by a high-level Defence Ministry meeting.

The second phase of Kumar’s Praja Sangram Yatra, which started on April 14, will end on May 14 at Tukkuguda near Maheshwaram on the outskirts of Hyderabad. Kumar, who had to halt the padayatra for half a day last week after he suffered a heat stroke, said the public meeting at Tukkuguda will be much bigger than any held by the BJP in Telangana recently.

The MP from Karimnagar said the party is planning to organise a huge welcome for Shah. “This public meeting will be attended by thousands of people and will show that the BJP is ready for the elections in the state. Cadres and supporters from all constituencies will attend the public meeting,” he said. Kumar and senior BJP leaders are holding video conferences with booth level workers and coordinators to mobilise people – at least 5,000 people from each mandal in the state – to attend the meeting. Apart from Shah, party chief J P Nadda and other senior party leaders will attend the public meeting where the BJP will announce its poll promises and plans. The BJP leaders will talk about neellu (water), nidhanalu (funds) and niyamakalu (jobs) which was also the rallying cry for the Telangana statehood agitation. Several welfare schemes are being finalised which the BJP will promise to implement if it comes to power, and they will be announced. BJP leaders will talk about the “double engine growth” (at the state and Centre) and good governance.

You can ‘lose jobs’ in the film industry due to miscommunication

Kartik Aaryan spoke about how miscommunication in the film industry can impact a person's career, and said that he doesn't feel like an 'outsider' in the business.

K

artik Aaryan in an interview spoke about his ‘outsider’ status in the film industry, and how ‘miscommunication’ is often the root of problems. Kartik is on the publicity tour for his upcoming film, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, which is a standalone sequel to the hit 2007 film starring Akshay Kumar. Kartik broke out after the success of Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2, which became a runaway box office hit, despite negative reviews. He subsequently signed onto several major projects, but controversially, dropped out of Dostana 2, after having filmed some sequences for the movie. While neither Dharma Productions nor Kartik commented about what happened, it was rumoured that Kartik clashed with the filmmakers.Responding to these rumours, Kartik told MissMalini in Hindi, “I have a lot of patience, I believe that your actions

speake louder than words, so even when I have been in bad times, I do not talk about it. Negative things don’t affect me, only one thing is important for me, whether my films do well at the box office or not. I categorically believe that your work speaks for you and nothing else.” Asked about whether he still feels like an outsider in the industry, despite having established himself, he said, “I don’t get the outsider feeling in any production house, everyone is happy with my work, you get that vibe as soon as you enter the room.” He continued, “In this industry, many times miscommunication happens. Not only in this industry, it happens in every industry. Sometimes it’s good for you, sometimes you lose the job. But I believe that the industry is passing through a good phase, maybe because of OTT, and now I think only about the growth of the industry, nothing else.”

Kartik was most recently seen in director Ram Madhvani’s singlelocation thriller Dhamaka, which was a departure for him as a performer. Up next, he h a s F r e d d y, Shehzada and Captain India. Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 is scheduled for a theatrical release on May 20.

c t o r Ya m i G au t a m believes films from the South are turning out to be pan-India successes as filmmakers are able to share their vision without any hurdle. The Dasvi actor said directors in the Hindi film industry still find it difficult to have a free hand when bringing their perspective on screen. “This is time to improvise and work on what we need to do,” Yami said during a session at the ongoing Goa Fest 2022 on Thursday. The 33-year-old actor asserts producers are still interested in backing projects with big stars as they sideline story-oriented films. “My husband, Aditya (Dhar), who directed Uri, even after three years of the film’s release, is working on one of his most ambitious films. But for him to explain his vision to producers… There were just two or three who understood that and are working towards it,” she said. “The director needs more free hand in expressing their vision. We need to focus more on the story and the script… We need to straighten our priorities,” the actor added. Citing examples of the films like Baahubali franchise, KGF series, Pushpa and RRR, Yami said these films prove that producers trusted their directors and the story.

Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas had welcomed a baby girl through surrogacy in January this year. Recently, the parents took to social media to express their delight about bringing their daughter home with them.

I was even under the impression that Hindi is the national language. But I just looked up that the constitution gives no language the status of a national language.”

ndian classical music legend Shiv Kumar Sharma has died at the age of 84.Sharma was an exponent of santoor, a dulcimerlike instrument. He suffered a heart attack at his residence in Mumbai on Tuesday morning.Sharma is credited with converting the santoor, which was mainly played in Kashmir, into a major instrument of Indian classical music.Sharma was also part of a duo - along with flautist Hariprasad Chaurasia - who worked on classical and film music.Shiv-Hari, as they were called, composed music for at least eight Bollywood films, including Silsila, Chandni, Darr and Lamhe. Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the tributes to Sharma. Sharma was born and raised in Jammu in a house by a river where, in his words, “from dawn till dusk, someone or the other was singing or playing an instrument”. His father, Uma Dutt Sharma, came from a family of priests, and was himself a classical vocalist and played the tabla, the traditional Indian drum. In the early 1950s, when he was handling music programmes for a state-run radio station, Uma Dutt began researching the santoor, a traditional instrument of Kashmir used in local Sufi music. He bought home a 100-string santoor and encouraged his young son to try playing it. Years later, Sharma recounted that he had initially resisted playing the instrument. “My father told me, ‘You have no idea what is going to happen with your name and the santoor. They are going to become synonymous. So you have to play this’, Sharma told interviewer Ina Puri. By 17, Sharma was playing both the santoor and the tabla for the local radio station. He flowered into a versatile musician, later playing the tabla for maestros such as Ravi Shankar (sitar) and Ustad Ali Akbar Khan (sarod). Also, playing the santoor was not easy: the instrument is not played with the fingers. Instead, its strings have to be struck with a mallet held in each hand. Sharma once said he had modified the instrument to “suit the requirements

Interestingly, he was also the first musician to play the instrument, weighing eight kilograms, on his lap for hours at a time - traditionally the santoor was kept on a wooden stand when played. Some critics were “harsh”, saying the santoor would never be accepted as a classical instrument, and told his father that his son had chosen the “wrong instrument”, Sharma recounted in his autobiography, Journey with a Hundred Strings. In 1955, when he was 17, he had turned down an offer from V Shantaram, a Bollywood director, to compose a song in his film - saying his calling lay elsewhere. But five yars later, he arrived in Mumbai looking for music-based jobs in the film industry - by then, he had also acquired a master’s degree in economics. “His work, for much of the sixties and some of the seventies, kept running like a train on two tracks - his work in cinema, and his opus on the [classical] concert stage,” said Manek Premchand, a historian of film music. A rare musician who effortlessly straddled both classical and popular music, Sharma played the santoor for least 40 popular Hindi film songs sung by greats such as Lata Mangeshkar, Mohammed Rafi, Kishore Kumar and Mukesh. Sharma received some of India’s greatest honours: the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1986, the Padma Shri in 1991, and the Padma Vibhushan in 2001.

The award, introduced this year, was announced for the chief minister’s book, ‘Kabita Bitan’ a collection of over 900 poems, at the state government organised programme to celebrate the birth anniversary of Tagore on Monday. he Reserve Bank of India is once again seeking to defend its currency when the Federal Reserve is tightening.\ This time though, analysts expect it to mount a more limited defence, aimed at fending off the worst of speculative attacks rather than holding down a line in the sand when capital flows are shifting globally with the Fed set to hike throughout the year. “The RBI will be careful to fight cavalier speculators, and not the Fed,” said Vishnu Varathan, head of economics and strategy at Mizuho Bank Ltd. in Singapore. “That is to say, prudence warns against trying to defy broad-based dollar trends. Afterall, a $600 billion plus reserve coffer is harder to build than it is to burn.” Such a strategy may entail the RBI doing just limited intervention as its seeks to preserve ammunition amid a broad dollar rally fueled by expectations of aggressive monetary tightening by the Federal Reserve. The RBI’s stated objective remains to curb excessive currency volatility and in recent weeks reserves have fallen, indicating market intervention, according to analysts. The rupee slid to a record low of 77.53 per dollar on Monday as the greenback continued its rise and amid elevated crude prices, which is threatening to widen the trade deficit to unprecedented levels. Foreign funds have been pulling out of the nation’s equities at a record pace and a central bank that held back on policy tightening till last week hasn’t helped matters. Yet, the rupee’s moves have been orderly over the past month when compared to its emerging Asian peers. The currency is down nearly 4% this year and is in the middle of the Asian pack. It gained 0.2% to 77.32 to a dollar on Tuesday. India’s central bank is intervening in all foreign-exchange markets including the offshore markets and will continue to do so to protect the rupee that slid to a record low Monday, Bloomberg News reported, citing a person familiar with the matter. A central bank spokesperson wasn’t immediately available for comment. The nation’s forex reserves stood at $598

Instead, voters want far safer and less costly solutions to fix the path. The Illinois Prairie Path was created in 1963 as the first rails-to-trails conversion in North America. A recreational path

Where the Path crosses Mannheim Rd. at Mannheim Rd./Washington St. or Mannheim Rd./ Madison St. intersections, users face dangerous, fast-moving trucks and vehicles turning from all directions. Pritzker and Tamburino want to rip the Path off Warren, construct almost a mile of costly new pathways, purchase and demolish private buildings, force Path users across dangerous Mannheim Rd. intersections, force users across 13 dangerous business driveways and make the Path longer than it is today. Immigration extends some eligible renewal applicants employment authorization (eads) Automatic Extension of Employment Authorization and Employment Authorization Documents (EADs) for Certain Renewal Applicants: Temporary Final Rule categories currently eligible for the previous up to 180-day automatic extension of employment authorization and EAD validity. USCIS will provide up to 360 days (for a total of up to 540 days) of additional automatic extension time to eligible applicants with a pending EAD renewal application on the temporary rule’s effective date and for 540 days thereafter (that is, from May 4, 2022 to Oct. 26, 2023).

HiIndia Newsdesk

The good news is some EAD validity and authorization may be extended for up to 540 days Effective May 4, 2022, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is temporarily amending existing DHS regulations related to expiring employment authorization and Employment Authorization Documents (EADs) for certain renewal applicants. The prior extension period of up to 180 days will automatically increase to up to 540 days from the expiration date stated on their current EADs. This has been done by DHS because of COVID the processing time of I-765 and EADs had increased beyond practical levels and some employees were losing employment or could not work .

Background By 2019, USCIS was in a precarious financial situation that impaired the efficient completion of caseloads. The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated these challenges in 2020, with a hiring freeze and furlough threat leading to workforce attrition and severely reduced capacity. In 2021, before USCIS could recover from these fiscal and operational impacts, there was a sudden and dramatic increase in EAD initial and renewal filings. As a result, processing times for Form I-765 have increased to such a level that the 180-day automatic extension period for certain Form I-765 renewal applicants’ employment authorization

and EADs is no longer sufficient to prevent or mitigate the risk of gaps in employment authorization and documentation, as it was originally intended. For some applicants, the automatic extension period has already expired. As a result, these renewal DHS has determined that it is imperative to immediately increase the automatic extension period of EADs for eligible Form I-765 renewal applicants during a temporary period of time. This temporary increase will also allow USCIS an opportunity to address staffing shortages, implement additional efficiencies, and ultimately reduce processing times for EAD applications.

Who does the extension apply to? The up to 540-day automatic EAD extension only applies to those EAD

Sikh Man Called F*cking Hindu in California HiIndia Newsdesk

Rouble Paul Claire, a first generation Sikh American has called Sutter in California home since 1973. But lately, he has been finding himself at the receiving end of racism and has been a victim of slurs and threats. Back in 2021, he was accosted by a woman in his neighborhood while at South Butte Market, a local grocery store. The woman shouted and cursed at Mr. Claire--including by calling him a “f*cking Hindu”--threatened to “ram” him with her car, and then got in her car and sped towards him in a parking lot, only swerving away at the last moment. Later that day, another woman connected to the assailant in the first incident wrote the word “Sand N*gger” in chalk on the sidewalk outside Claire’s house and in his driveway, and called him “N*gger.” Claire was quick to report these incidents to the local authorities but for over a year, he felt no substantial action was taken against the perpetrators. 66 year-old Claire, immediately notified

Applicants with pending I-765 renewal applications as of May 4, 2022, will not receive a new receipt notice reflecting the increased EAD automatic extension period. However, Form I-797C notices that refer to a 180-day automatic extension will still meet the regulatory r e q u i r e m e nt s f o r e mp l o y m e nt authorization. Therefore, individuals who show Form I-797C notices that refer to a 180-day extension, along with their qualifying EADs, still receive the up to 540-day extension under this rule For additional information on EAD renewals, visit USCIS Automatic Employment Authorization Document (EAD) Extension page. To be eligible for the 540-day automatic extension: 1. The individual must have been issued an EAD card in one of the categories listed by USCIS. Note that DACA- and F-1 OPT-based EAD cards are not included in the automatic extension. 2. The individual must have filed an application to renew employment authorization on Form I-765 prior to the EAD card’s expiration date.

NJ Assemblywoman Sadaf Jaffer on being Invited at the White House Eid Celebrations “It was my first time at the White House and it was truly awe-inspiring to be in such a historic place” – Sadaf Jaffer, NJ Assemblywoman

A California based Sikh Man has launched a civil suit after being repeatedly harassed and threatened in his neighbourhood

the Sutter County Sheriff ’s Office (SCSO); but after months of delay and inconsistent responses, he has now retained the Sikh Coalition, a civic service organization providing for free legal help to victims of racism. Claire says, “I have been subject to threats, harassment, and racial slurs-yet almost a full year later, no one has been held accountable.”He adds, “For months after immediately reporting these hateful acts, I sat in silence waiting for action that never came. I did not want to have to take legal action against anyone, but I believe that this failure of justice is unacceptable: No one in our community should have to face this kind of hate and bigotry.”

3. The Form I-765 must have been filed requesting an extension of employment authorization based on the same category as the expiring/ expired EAD card. (Unless it is TPS based; in this case, categories A12 or C19 are used interchangeably.) 4. The Form I-765 must remain pending and not have been denied. (Once the Form I-765 is denied, the extension period automatically ends.) For H-4 (C26), E (A17), and L-2 (A18) dependent spouses, whose Form I-797C must be accompanied by an unexpired Form I-94 indicating H-4, E, or L-2 nonimmigrant status, the expiration date in Section 2 or 3 may not exceed the Form I-94 end date. This will help some of the EAD and/ or I-765 applicants and provide a good relief as they can continue or resume employment provided they fall within one of the Categories (certain eligible Renewal Applicants) the Categories mentioned above to be eligible for this Temporary Final Rule. We strongly advise the reader to consult a professional Immigration Attorney to determine if you or your spouse qualifies under this temporary Final Rule as each case is based upon its own facts and background. How to tackle joint pain By middle age, the wear and tear of the cushioning cartilage at the ends of bones results in osteoarthritis

T

he human body is composed of bones of various shapes and sizes, connected by articulating joints and held together by ligaments and muscles. Trauma, injury, infection, wear and tear as well as autoimmune disease can cause joint pain. The pain may shift from one joint to another or discomfort be present continuously as a throbbing, sleep-depriving entity. Daily activities may become difficult. By middle age, the wear and tear of the cushioning cartilage at the ends of bones results in osteoarthritis. The hands, hips and knees are commonly affected. It usually starts with stiffness and pain, which is worse in the mornings. The joint may be swollen and tender to touch. There may be a loss of flexibility and crackling sounds on moving the joint. Rheumatoid arthritis affects younger people (more women than men) and is symmetrical, with swollen, tender joints on both sides of the body. It is an autoimmune disease where the body attacks its own tissues. This produces periods of pain and then inexplicable remission. In 40 per cent of patients, other organs such as the eyes, lungs, kidneys, heart and blood vessels can also be affected.

Hair loss is a very common problem and most people try using remedies to stop or reduce losing hair but not many feel satisfied with the results. Dermatologist Dr Geetika Mittal Gupta shares some tips on her Instagram handle to fix this problem. She, however, says that losing up to 50 to 100 strands of hair a day is normal but any excessive loss should be acutely evaluated The dermatologist said when you walk into a clinic they prescribe you several blood tests, including CBC, Vit D3 and BR2. The test results could suggest the reasons why you were losing hair. Other than that, there are some tips that you can try at home to stop excessive hair fall. Q

Make sure you don’t tie your hair in tight hair styles or high ponytails because that causes more friction and more tightness to the hair, which can lead to hair fall.

Q

Make sure you use a silk pillow cover which reduces the friction and doesn’t break your hair.

Q

Avoid any over styling or chemical treatments to the hair which can further lead to breakage of the hair bonds.

Q

Use shampoos and conditioners which are meant for your hair type.

Rheumatoid arthritis affects younger people (more women than men) and is symmetrical, with swollen, tender joints on both sides of the body. Needle sharp crystals of uric acid can get deposited in the joint spaces, especially in the big toe, knee, ankle, foot, hand, wrist and elbow. It causes gout with severe pain, swelling and redness. Middle-aged men are more likely to develop gout. Obesity, heart failure, a family history of gout, hypertension, diabetes, renal disease and alcoholism are risk factors. Pseudogout mimics gout, but the uric acid levels are normal. It is due to the deposition of calcium pyrophosphate crystals. Unlike gout, which commonly affects the big toe, in pseudogout the knees are affected. It is likely to run in families and is associated with a mineral imbalance between calcium, phosphorous and magnesium. It

can be precipitated by injury and is associated with thyroid disease. External applications of capsaicin or methyl salicylatecontaining ointment twice or thrice a day help. Initially, there may be a burning sensation with the ointment, but the application of ice will relieve this. Pain relief medications can also be taken. Paracetamol is effective and safe. NSAIDs (non- steroidal antiinflammatory drugs) like ibuprofen, naproxen or those from the coxib group may be tried. Muscle relaxants also help. If there is no relief after three days, a physician should be consulted. Weight loss, control of diabetes and correction of uric acid levels can help. Physiotherapy can help with pain relief and strengthening of muscles. If the pain persists, arthroscopy can repair damaged cartilage and remove loose bits of bone. Aspiration of the fluid from the joint can relieve the swelling. This can be followed by an injection of steroids or hyaluronan into the joint. If nothing works, joint replacement may be needed. Consult a doctor immediately if the pain suddenly gets unbearably intense, the joint appears deformed or the joint cannot be used.

Q

Use certain hair serums every day to not only promote hair growth but also to reduce the hair breakage and hair fall.

Q

Lastly, a good night’s sleep and a stress-free lifestyle always help. Make sure to remain hydrated and follow a good routine when it comes to your diet.

Gujarat is no Delhi. Challenge goes beyond ‘development’—contesting Modi’s iconic image Recently, Arvind Kejriwal, leader and star campaigner of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) held a rally in Bharuch, a tribal district in Gujarat and raised the issue of development in the state. He critiqued the ‘Gujarat model of development’, which is one of the calling cards of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The moniker of ‘vikas purush’, which Narendra Modi earned during his tenure as the chief minister in the state worked as a ‘symbolic capital’ of Narendra Modi during the 2014 parliamentary elections. But Kejriwal, instead of accepting it, tried to expose the ‘Gujarat model’ by highlighting the problems of schools and hospitals in the state. He also indirectly proposed an alternative — the ‘Delhi model’ of development, with claims of building a high-quality, equitable school system and competent medical system.

BJP’s development success in Gujarat

It is interesting to note, however, that a few days before Kejriwal’s rally, Modi inaugurated and led the foundation of various water supply and urban infrastructure projects worth around Rs 22,000 crores in Dahod and Panchmahal, underdeveloped tribal areas of Gujarat. Modi’s projects in the past have attempted to establish an elaborate network of four, six and eightlane highways as well. In his model of development, the calls for basic needs like water is crucial, to which he responded by making the Sardar Sarovar Dam on the Narmada River despite heavy opposition by civil society groups. In retrospect, people have now realised that it’s because of this project

aspirations in these areas have caused the beginning of independent tribal politics in the state in the form of the Maheshbhai Vasava-led Bharatiya Tribal Party (BTP). The party already has an impressive vote base among various tribal communities and the Aam Aadmi Party, which is cognizant of this, has moved quickly to form an alliance with the BTP for the upcoming elections. But the BJP hasn’t given up yet. It is now focussing on a micro development plan for this region. Only time will tell who will succeed.

‘Development’ has again entered the political vocabulary of Gujarat. But Arvind Kejriwal must understand voters might not want the ‘Delhi model’. that enough water is available in various parts of rural and urban Gujarat. The Bharatiya Janata Party government, during its 27 years of rule in the state, lay the infrastructural foundation that has fostered development in Gujarat. Modi’s vision, as then CM, to push for tourism in the state has also translated into job opportunities. It is also interesting to observe how the BJP regime has been renovating old religious sites and memorials while developing new ones such as the Statue of Unity in the Kevadia tribal zone. These sites have worked as catalysts in evolving various kinds of businesses, trades, and commerce in the state. By strengthening Special Economic Zones in the state, the BJP has also created an ecosystem where traditional, regionbased ‘dhandhas’ like making tiles,

handicrafts and cottage industries can flourish.

Space for Congress and AAP

With these success stories, there are few who can sell the dream of ‘development’ in Gujarat and reshape the future electoral politics of the state. However, despite BJP’s best efforts, the benefits of such programmes are yet to reach various tribal zones across the state such as Bharuch, Dahod, Chhotaudepur and Dang. It is in these underdeveloped parts of the state where Congress and AAP can forge a political space to mobilise dissatisfied tribal people, who comprise around an estimated 16 per cent of the total population. However, for the two national parties, winning over the tribal people of Gujarat won’t be as simple. The unfulfilled

For now, all we know is Delhi and Gujarat aren’t the same and treating it as such would be a big mistake for Kejriwal. From geographical areas to developmental history, there are indicators to show that the needs of the people are different too. Promising good schools and nice hospitals like that of Delhi, won’t evoke a response from the diverse aspirations of the people of Gujarat in the upcoming election. In order to project themselves as a symbol of development, politicians will have to contest the iconic image of Narendra Modi. Not only will the Opposition have to draw a bigger line of development than Modi, but it will also have to improve upon the ongoing developmental projects that the PM has been working on. The central plot of the electoral discourse in the upcoming state assembly election, no doubt, will be claims and counterclaims around development and unfortunately, for AAP and Congress, it has the towering image of ex-CM and now PM Narendra Modi to scale.

HiIndia Newsdesk

American Hunter Armstrong has set a swimming world record in the men’s 50-meter backstroke. Armstrong posted a time of 23.71 seconds in the non-Olympic event

while competing Thursday night in the International Team Trials at Greensboro, North Carolina. The meet is selecting the U.S. team that will compete at this summer’s world championships in Budapest, Hungary, an event that was added to the calendar after the 2021 worlds in Fukuoka, Japan, were postponed twice because of the coronavirus pandemic.
