third annual holistic health & wellness expo coming to fayetteville
By Karen Gilchrist
Looking for natural approaches to a healthful lifestyle and living well, mind, body and soul? Unsure where to look, or overwhelmed by how much information you can find? Then you won’t want to miss the third annual Holistic Health and Wellness Expo on Saturday, April 9, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the Crown Expo Center in Fayetteville. Nicole Walcott, Event Organizer, wanted to create an expo that would allow one to educate one’s self on “how to live a better life.” The expo features eight speakers and over 70 vendors sharing their knowledge, experience and options for living life well. “We’re running the expo through the nonprofit Chambers for Hope,” Walcott said. Chambers for Hope, founded in 2014, provides financial assistance to individuals wishing to use hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) for rehabilitation and alternative or supplemental treatment to an existing medical protocols. In addition to providing assistance for diagnoses not covered by insurance, the nonprofit works to create a network of HBOT clinics to enable individuals to receive treatment close to home. The main speaker at the expo is Dr. Bob W. Sears, pediatrician and co-author in the Sears Parenting Library. Other speakers, each scheduled to speak for 45 minutes, with another 15 for questions, include Dr. R. Ernest Cohn, owner of the

Holistic Medical Clinic of the Carolinas; Dave Romanelli, author, yoga instructor and wellness innovator; Seamus Mullen, awardwinning New York chef, restaurateur and cookbook author, and Lauren Singer, author of the Zero Waste blog “Trash is for Tossers” and founder of organic cleaning. Local wellness experts and advocates Kelsy Timas, Founding Director of Guiding Wellness in Fayetteville; Deborah Lallier of Haymount Healing and Wellness, and Nathaniel Schrader of Iron Forged Athletics will each speak for 30 minutes. “Dr. Sears will not only speak at the expo, but also attend a dinner Friday night downtown at Sherefé, hosted by Chambers for Hope,” said Walcott. “Tickets are $125, which includes the meal, one alcoholic beverage and VIP admission to the expo the next day. (Note: At of the time of the interview, only a couple of dinner tickets were still available.) Dave Romanelli is bringing his best-selling book, which will be available for purchase and autographing. After speaking, Dr. Cohn, one of the world’s most experienced integrative physicians, will offer free consultations on a one-on-one basis at the Holistic Medical Clinic of the Carolinas booth at the expo (bring relevant testing). Lauren Singer will talk about her zero-waste lifestyle, and Chef Mullen will discuss using food as a complement to medicine. All of the speakers will be on one stage for the best acoustics, benefitting

the audience as well as the vendors speaking with potential customers. Over 70 vendors will be in attendance, primarily representing the health and wellness field, green and sustainable products and sustainable businesses, including essential oils, reclaimed furniture from scrap wood, natural approaches to skin care, massage therapy, hypnosis, counseling, Eastern medicine, herbs, pregnancy and baby care, nutrition and fitness education, jewelry and more. Visitors will be able to see what is offered not only in Fayetteville and North Carolina, but also South Carolina and Virginia. To ensure that everyone attending the expo has a good time, the event will feature two special areas, the Kids Zone, sponsored by The Little Gym, and the Spa Zone, sponsored by Dayla Eco Salon and Spa. “The Little Gym is bringing some of their equipment, offering free play, a gymnastics-centered approach to play. Sprinkle Pop Play will provide life-sized superheroes and princesses, and we’ll have a face painter,” Walcott said. “The Spa Zone will offer reduced prices on chair massages and a small spa service. They’re unique. They are the first green/ ecofriendly salon and spa in Fayetteville.” And no one need leave empty-handed after attending the expo! “We have swag bags for the first 200 attendees and VIP ticket holders and lots of giveaways,” said Walcott. “All vendors will have items to give away, and local businesses have donated larger prizes, including gift baskets, gift certificates and fun things to do.” One of the vendors, Om Sanctuary in Asheville, will award a grand raffle prize of a two-night stay at the retreat center to the winner of the 10-question scavenger hunt. “It will be very fun, very interactive, with lots of stuff going on,” Walcott said. In keeping with the theme of the expo, food served during the event will also focus on more healthful options. “The caterers created a special menu,” said Walcott. “All of the concessions will be healthy –– sandwiches, wraps, fruit trays, veggie trays, a healthy snack bar.” General admission tickets to the expo are $8. A limited number of VIP tickets at $40 are available and include access to preferred parking, preferred seating at lectures, a swag bag and a short meet and greet with some of the speakers. Those attending dinner with Dr. Sears receive a free VIP ticket. Guests can purchase tickets in advance online or at the door the day of the expo. However, Walcott notes that VIP tickets purchased at the door will not include swag bags. Walcott encourages anyone interested to follow on April 2016

the right to an equal education. Remember, if you opt out of even one dose, your child is barred from public and private education. Allowing the government to mandate any type of invasive medical treatment is a slippery slope and a violation of informed consent. What will come next? Mandatory psychiatric medication for everyone with mental illness? Mandatory antibiotics for every single infection? Mandatory Ritalin for children with ADD to attend school? It makes no sense to sacrifice personal freedoms for zero gain. It is our job as citizens to question the necessity and effectiveness of every new law, especially one that affects our children's future. And asking questions, even ones about mandatory vaccine laws, does NOT make you anti-vaccination — it makes you pro-immunity education.

eat. real. food. By Sueson Vess It’s time to take up the vital principle of eating nutrient-dense foods. We are what we eat, so make sure that there is some benefit in the food beyond just filling an empty tummy or giving in to sweet or salty cravings. It can be a challenging balancing act with family, careers, multiple sports and activities, leaving little time to think about “what’s for dinner?” Let alone is it healthy. What we eat is one of our most important health decisions we make on a daily basis. It is never too late to start eating a more beneficial diet. Creating a meal plan will definitely reduce stress and save on the budget, too. A meal plan doesn’t have to be a gourmet menu. Just writing down what to prepare and when means that you have all the ingredients on hand and don’t have to think about recipes at dinnertime. Burgers and salad can satisfy even picky eaters. Try a salmon burger or veggie burger

LIVING
two steps to zero waste By Lauren Singer
My name is Lauren Singer, and I live a Zero Waste life in NYC. I was an environmental studies major in college and have always been interested in the environment, but I made the conscious decision to live sustainably about a year and a half ago. There were two moments that brought me to a trash-free, waste-free lifestyle: The first was my senior year of college when my professor Jeffrey Hollender, of Seventh Generation fame, emphasized the importance of living your values and made me think about my own personal environmental impact. The second was when a fellow environmental studies major would bring lunch to class every week in a single use plastic bag, a disposable water

This is when I really decided that I not only needed to claim to love the environment, but actually live as though I love the environment. On my website blog Trash is for Tossers, I document my Zero Waste journey and show that leading a Zero Waste lifestyle is simple, cost-effective, timely, fun and entirely possible for everyone and anyone. If I can do it, anyone can! For the purpose of this article, Waste will be defined as

as the path to zero waste is never-ending. Always strive to downsize, find better alternatives and educate yourself. 1. Evaluate: The first step is to take a look at your daily life and ask yourself the following questions: • How much garbage am I currently producing, and what types? Ex: food packaging — this can help you determine the places you can start reducing and looking for alternatives. • Why am I even interested in decreasing my impact? Is it for the environment, is it to decrease toxins in my life, is it to decrease clutter, is it because I’m totally broke and want to save

It wasn’t until that 2 a.m. moment that I was like, this is not the way the world works, and for a space, but “the more and more that I looked, I realized it didn’t need to be rural.” And Timas noted that before finding there’s so much more to this prevention.”

the space, collective consciousness, insurance changes and other things had to happen, including finding serious players. "Part of living in a virtual world is the need to have simple access to things in order for them to be relevant and sustainable,” said Timas. “There’s not a better place than Fayetteville.” Timas hopes to open 10 locations in 10 years in large military communities, not big cities like N.Y. or L.A., as they already have the accessibility and facilities. “Military active duty and retirees want to reintegrate into a community that understands where they have been and where they are, their experiences. Larger bases usually also have some rural access, a smaller-town feel. We want to bring resources to smaller, more rural communities. Yoga, mindfulness and acupuncture should not be limited in availability.” The primary focus of Guiding Wellness Inc. is education, and then collaboration, notes Timas. “We want to equip people with what they need to then open their own businesses and even support them to do that. In our corporate wellness division, we’ll get invited into an area where maybe there’s a chiropractor and a massage therapist renting a room in a day spa, but not a lot of connection. We go in with our model and identify resources in the area where word of mouth through community members is not enough. It needs to take place through a practitioner network. We provide education,

continuing education and certification for a legitimate holistic health industry and then network them together so that they can combine the bank on things and not have all this overhead expense. “I love what I do, and it’s important to me. In that little town where two or three practitioners are struggling, five veterans are returning to that community. They’ve completed treatment and are pain-free. Within six months, their pain is back, and they call and ask, ‘Who should I see?’ We create a network where providers can connect so that we have a way to refer and resource people nationally –– this is why it has to be national. Someone leaves Fort Bragg and goes to Ohio. With a national network of providers already screened, qualified and registered, practitioners can feel comfortable referring that person and start to build the network before they move. Ten locations are also necessary to make traveling for conferences and continuing education practical and accessible.” In September 2015, Timas launched the rebranding of Guiding Wellness Inc. and its website. She was looking for a facility but hadn’t found it until a client told her about space just off Raeford Road at the site of a former miniature golf course. Timas started moving into the Guiding Wellness Institute the third week of December, maintaining a wide, open space for study, a space to speak to the practical and sustainable, complete with a kitchen and bar and access to what will become the meditation gardens. “There are four pillars within the

company,” Timas said. “Continuing education, corporate wellness, community education and food education. How do we make one space facilitate all four? Our cubbies are movable walls. We have 299% capacity for 5000 square foot space and almost 2½ acres. It’s multifunctional. The yoga space can also be for large conferences. We’ve found a way to reuse everything that was here and not create a lot of waste. The front of the bar is all reclaimed wood from a local barn. A local wood craftsman customized the cubbies. We use local and family-owned businesses whenever we can.” In addition to the yoga space and kitchen, the facility provides workshop space for teaching meditation and making malas and retail space for holistic products, including coloring books, essential oils, workshop materials, kits for mala making, Fresh Factory natural deodorant, natural and holistic skin care and body products and books. Timas has plans to use the kitchen, currently available for use by students, for cooking demonstrations. Plans for the grounds outside include renovation of the miniature golf course into meditation gardens, once again, employing sustainable/repurposing approaches. Four of the putting greens will evolve into a walking meditation path. With room to expand, Timas may construct more outbuildings for treatment options. Among the many offerings at the Guiding Wellness Institute are classes in yoga therapy, holistic education and corporate wellness; certification programs in therapeutic yoga teacher training, mindfulness resiliency training, holistic life coaching, meridian exercise therapy and advanced aesthetics training, and continuing education courses in yoga therapy, massage therapy,

aesthetics, life coaching and counseling. A svadhyaya circle for yoga teachers to come together and study takes place on the first Friday of each month. Plans include a monthly community acupuncture event, monthly wellness workshops on Friday afternoons, speakers, discussions, lectures and Yama yoga for young adults and teens. Many events are free of charge or bring people together to raise money for nonprofits or service. Others may come to practice and be supported in their purpose. Community support and outreach expand through Affiliates and the Ambassador Program. “Everything we do is experiential learning. We create the environment for people to explore, learn and apply it to life and make changes in home,” said Timas. Another opportunity for change is available through the #guidemewell program, a social media campaign stemming from “Be well” that connects people virtually so they may use their own journeys to inspire others, seek motivation and develop community. The institute offers a membership program that will launch on Saturday, April 9, during the Holistic Health and Wellness Expo, of which Guiding Wellness Inc. is the premier sponsor. General Wellness, Optimal Wellness and Provider Wellness levels offer different benefits and discounts on programs and speakers. Members also enjoy Tapas time, open hours between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. each day, to use the space for themselves. Special membership rates will be offered on April 9 and again on May 1 during the grand opening of the institute from 1 to 6 p.m. The event is free, family-friendly and open to the public and includes door prizes, special gifts for those who register online, a raffle for free membership, youth-oriented activities, class demonstrations, holistic health presentations and light refreshments. Timas and her team approach any changes or ideas at the institute by asking three things. “Is it simple, sacred and relevant? Decisions about life, health, relationships and careers can move forward without losing our wellness if we can answer those three questions.” For more information about Guiding Wellness Inc. or the Guiding Wellness Institute, visit www.guidingwellness.com. unplug your kids. Today’s kids spend an average of 6 hours a day planted in front of an electronic screen—spending about half as much time outdoors as you did when you were a kid. No making mud pies. No catching fireflies. No swinging in trees. No wading in streams. No daydreaming while watching the clouds roll by... Unplugged isn’t just about going outside for baseball or soccer practice or recess at school. Unplugged is about giving your child a every day, unstructured time in green spaces to explore, imagine, and discover. It’s healthy and it’s FUN.
