Show Your Love Love is in the air! Check out our Valentine’s Day activities
on page 30. The Oreo Truffles are the best! You’ll be surprised that they’re made from cookies, but taste like fudge. As I have stated many times, every day is “show your love” day, but Valentine’s Day is always fun. Make it special. School is back into swing after the holidays. Are the kids keeping up with homework? If they need extra help, tutoring services and educational apps might hit the mark. Find them on page 24. There is also an app to help organize projects and schedules. I wish I had learned a second language as a child. My mom and dad understood German, but didn’t speak it so it wasn’t in the house. If you come from a multi-language speaking home, keep it up with your own children. As our article states, languages are easiest to learn before age 5. Find many immersion schools and Saturday classes on page 20. It’s Black History Month. Turn to page 16 to help with the celebration, including a list of Black-owned restaurants to support for a fun, family outing. An artist who inspired one of Alyssa Navapanich’s art projects this month (Faith Ringgold) currently has a famous piece on display at The San Diego Museum of Art in Balboa Park. In the spirit of the Olympics, do you have any personal stories to share or family plans to support Team USA? Emily Dolton resource specialist In 1980 the Winter Olympics were in Lake Placid, New York and the torch run went through the Glens Falls Arena. Local middle school choirs were invited to sing “Let There Be Peace on Earth” as one torch bearer passed to the next. My mom sewed orange vests and black bowties for our choir members. I still have the commemorative pin. Tony Andrews marketing representative My dad and I attended the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles in 1984! We saw boxing, rowing, swimming and gymnastics. It was incredible to feel the intensity firsthand and see athletes from every country up close. My friend and I collected and traded Olympic pins that year, which I have to this day. We all wore T-shirts with our country’s flag and marched in a big procession out to the football field where the games took place. It was an absolute blast!

The goal of BE WiSE is to engage girls in free science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) experiences through STEM-related work, situations and hands-on learning. Participants work alongside female scientists and professionals and are encouraged to become the next generation to pursue STEM careers. Watching the Olympics with kids is a springboard for enriching conversations about other countries, cultural differences, and the dedication and perseverance it takes for athletes to compete. There are classes for many of these winter sports available in San Diego! Kids can learn figure skating or join youth ice hockey at The Rinks Poway Ice (https://powayice.therinks.com), The Salvation Army Kroc Center in the Rolando area (https://sd.kroccenter.org/ kroc-san-diego/ice) and San Diego Ice Arena in Mira Mesa (www.sdice.com). Take a Field Trip The Chula Vista Elite Athlete Training Center is a U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Training site mostly known for its summer sports training (archery, BMX, rowing, etc.). Self-guided and guided tours are available, in addition to an “Eat Like an Athlete” experience, where visitors are treated to an allinclusive lunch in the Training Center Dining Hall. Team USA gear can be purchased at the visitor center. Most winter sports training is not local, but there are winter sport Olympians who train here in the off-season. Get a Taste of Chinese Culture Chinese New Year, also known as Spring Festival or Lunar New Year, starts Feb. 1 and culminates with the Lantern Festival on Feb. 15. Since these dates coincide with Beijing 2022, Olympic spectators are sure to be treated to Chinese New Year festivities. Here are a few fun ways to embrace Chinese culture at home.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH at Home
The purpose of Black History Month is to honor the contributions and sacrifices of African Americans in our nation’s history. While that is typically done at school, it’s a great idea to extend the message (and celebration) at home. After all, parents are the most influential adults in a child’s life—what we say and do helps children process their understanding of the world around them. Here are some ideas to commemorate Black History Month at home.
EXPLORE & CREATE
One way to honor Black history with children is to learn about famous African American artists and do projects inspired by their work. Local art teacher Alyssa Navapanich provides instructions for these projects at www.sandiegofamily.com/for-the-kids/crafts-for-kids.

ENGAGE
Alma Woodsey Thomas was the first Fine Arts graduate of Howard University (1921). After decades of teaching art to middle school students in Washington D.C., she became a “serious artist” in her 70s. Thomas’ work has been displayed in prominent locations such as the Smithsonian and The White House. Visit our website to learn how to create mosaics inspired by Alma Thomas’ painting style.
Faith Ringgold, an artist, author and illustrator, is most known for her painted story quilts and children’s books. Gather the family to create fabric story collages, depicting an event, trip or experience that’s important to each person. Put phones away and have age-appropriate discussions with children about what’s going on in their world. Ask questions, then try to do more listening than talking in order to understand their thinking. Be available, receptive, compassionate and communicative. Other things parents can do to help children grow to be socially aware and empathetic: • Visit museums and cultural centers, such as the WorldBeat Center in Balboa Park. • Learn a language together—check out the free app Duolingo and turn to page 20 for more ideas. • Listen to multicultural music from Putumayo Kids, such as “African Playground.” • Celebrate your own family’s culture (invite others to join you) and then learn about someone else’s culture.

& READ Do your children’s books reflect a variety of ethnicities? Early and regular exposure to books that feature diverse characters and stories helps develop acceptance and understanding of other cultures at a young age. If you haven’t diversified your family’s bookshelves yet, there’s no time like now. Here are a handful of books featuring Black characters; consider adding one or more to your collection. Glow is a delightful and playful board book for little ones, written by poet Ruth Forman. When Langston Dances by Kaija Langley. A wonderful depiction of the bond between mother and daughter. Recipient of the Caldecott Honor and Coretta Scott King Award. If Dominican Were a Color by Sili Recio celebrates the joy of being Dominican and that the world is made up of many beautiful hues. Moving Forward by Chris Barton. A nonfiction picture book about the life of U.S. Air Force veteran Alton Yates, from space travel to the civil rights movement and beyond. For ages 6–10.

Kindness Matters
Be the reason someone smiles today Being kind is a win-win for both the giver
and receiver. The list of benefits for the receiver is extensive—and helping others is the right thing to do, of course—but did you know that kindness also makes the giver happier and healthier? It may seem selfish to look at how being kind to others is beneficial to us, but the recent science surrounding kindness is so fascinating that it can’t be ignored.
The Chemistry of Kindness Brain chemistry actually changes when we do something nice for another person. Studies show that thinking about, watching or practicing kindness stimulates the vagus nerve, which is linked to the production of oxytocin in the brain. Oxytocin is a hormone that soothes, making people feel calmer and happier. Being kind also triggers the production of dopamine, the hormone responsible for positive emotions and that “natural high” feeling. As a result, people who practice kindness regularly experience positive health changes such as: • Increased life expectancy • Stronger immune system • Fewer aches and pains • Decreased stress and anxiety • Decreased loneliness and depression
How Kindness and Stress Are Connected How can helping someone reduce stress? A study published by UCLA and Yale University School of Medicine linked acts of kindness to stress reduction. For 14 days, a group of adults was asked to report stressful events they experienced each day from several categories (e.g., interpersonal, work/education, home, finance, health/accident). They were also asked to report if they participated in various helpful behaviors that day (e.g., held open a door, assisted with schoolwork, asked someone if they needed help).
Results showed that helping others controlled the effects of stress on overall health. Researchers concluded that volunteerism can be an important way to cope with stress. According to the Association for Psychological Science, study author Emily Ansell of the Yale University School of Medicine said, “Stressful days usually lead us to have a worse mood and poorer mental health, but our findings suggest that if we do small things for others, such as holding a door open for someone, we won’t feel as poorly on stressful days.”
5 Kindness Activities for Families Now that you know these additional benefits of being kind, don’t you just want to get out there and make someone smile? There are many simple ways to incorporate kindness into your family’s daily routine. • Find a local volunteer project to do as a family. • Introduce kindness programs and resources to your child’s school. (see sidebar) • Participate in random acts of kindness with your kids and talk to them about the experience (how did it make them feel?). Some ideas include leaving a treat on a neighbor’s doorstep, giving a very generous tip to restaurant staff, opening a door for a stranger, and helping a senior citizen with groceries. Surprising Benefits of Language Immersion Emotional intelligence (EQ)
the five main characteristics of an emotionally intelligent person are selfawareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy and social skills. SEL refers to the process of developing emotional self-awareness, self-control and interpersonal skills (empathy for others) so children can succeed in school and beyond.
Maria Polinsky, Professor of Linguistics at Harvard University, explains that bilingual children develop more cognitive control than monolingual children. By constantly switching back and forth between two languages while filtering out distractions, bilingual children tend to be creative, critical thinkers who are better problem-solvers.
Abbie DiTommaso, a local San Diego mother of three, sends her 5-year-old son to an in-home French-immersion kindergarten program, which he has attended since preschool. “My husband speaks French fluently and has always loved that he can connect with people who are different from him,” DiTommaso says. “As we became parents, we looked into other benefits of learning languages and were excited to see emotional intelligence and cultural competency listed among them. For our son, it’s meant working on awareness of how others feel and using social and context clues to figure out a situation.”

So, what is EQ and SEL exactly? According to Daniel Goleman, a renowned psychologist credited with helping bring the term “emotional intelligence” into the mainstream,

Parents may worry that learning another language so young would be confusing for children still trying to master a first language. On the contrary, the first five years of a child’s life is the best time to learn a second language. While children in bilingual households may start speaking a few months behind monolingual counterparts, bilingual children will not only catch up, they are likely to surpass monolingual peers in language skills. A four-year study of language immersion students in the state of Oregon conducted by teacher and researcher, Jennifer Steele, Ed.D., found many bilingual immersion students reading a full grade level ahead of monolingual peers. When studying a second language, children learn about how languages work; literacy skills are enhanced because there’s a link between learning another language and English literacy development.

If a family does not want to commit to a full, daily immersion program, there are many “Saturday schools” offered throughout the county as well. Saturday school is typically an enrichment activity that takes place for a few hours on weekend mornings. Depending on the program, classes range from playbased language immersion to intense foreign language test preparation. The programs are often run by groups supporting cultural learning about that language’s country.
