Parenting in the AGE of

TECHNOLOGY by Gina Rosenfeld, MD

Like it or not, I have resolved that technology and smart devices are in our kids’ lives and are here to stay, which makes being a pediatrician and a parent more challenging. Our children are connected to the outside world like never before. Once given a smart device, no longer are they captive when they come home from school. Instead, they are very much connected to the outside world. This world helps them connect with their friends, teammates, teachers, and coaches, and opens a world of knowledge, but it can also open them up to a whole world of stress, anxiety, bullying, inappropriate information, and more. Home should be a space and place to feel safe, loved, nurtured, and free from worry and stress. However, when the unmonitored outside world is let in, some of the safety and values of home can melt away. This digital and ever-changing environment can be managed and the tools can be made positive, but with some consistent structure and awareness. Before sharing my tips to guide and monitor your children, tweens, and teens through this technology challenge, note one strong axiom - try and hold off their use of smart phones, tablets, and devices as long as you can. Once the inevitable happens, understand the technology

that you are allowing your kids to use. It’s really important that you sit down, understand, and plan a road map that is best for your family and your values. Your kids will want it all now, but understanding your child, their maturity, and when is the appropriate timing of allowing technology will be beneficial. With each stage comes rules and enforcement, and if you set and implement rules early, they are more apt to follow. So, let’s get started. Even before your child has a phone or tablet of their own, lead by example as you are your child’s biggest role model. Don’t have your cell phone at the dinner table, when helping with homework, or during the nighttime routine. Make sure to look at people when they’re talking to you — not at your phone. Again, your children are always watching you and they notice everything. Realistically, babies and very young children do not need technology. Instead, they need human interaction. For children ages 2-5, if you are going to share screen time, it should be limited to an hour a day and be educational. For school-age kids, screen time should not be all the time -set rules and limits; the AAP recommends no more than two hours a day. Encourage outside activities and don’t make technology a reward. Technology use should not be in a bedroom, but out in the open and supervised as kids can stumble onto all kinds of questionable stuff quite easily.

And now the real challenge, tweens and teens. Again, before embarking on the smart phone journey, make sure to have clearly stated rules and consequences in place. Set expectations, limits, routines, and guidelines. You can allow and restrict certain websites, apps, and social media accounts. Establish appropriate online behavior and privacy settings. Educate your kids on your family’s beliefs, principles, and values. Remember, smart phones are a privilege and you can and should monitor the time spent on them and your tween/ teens online presence/ behavior. Some of my recommendations: a) homework, studying, chores and activities always come first, b) charging occurs outside the bedroom, c) meal and family time is phone free, d) it is not only your right but a must to know, monitor, follow, and approve of the websites and apps your children are using, e) don’t share anything online that you wouldn’t be comfortable with the entire world reading, and f) no naked pictures ever. I could go on and on, but this should be a good start. Remember, parenting is not easy and technology has made it more challenging, however, we still have experience and wisdom on our side.

Summer of Fun, Make it Memorable! Summer time is fun time! If you are traveling or staying here in San Diego, make it memorable. Get the kids involved — asking for their input and making decisions together gives everyone a say. Jody Cates, our local “Parenting with Purpose” writer, provides great summer planning and travel tips. For instance, don’t overschedule. Instead, plan one activity per day, relax and enjoy the memory. Find more of Jody’s tips on page 26. What can you do here in San Diego County? Check out the Best of San Diego Summer, starting on page 16. There are activities including places to go, educational outings, fun events and more. Keeping semi-active throughout the summer is important. The kids cannot be in front of the computer or texting friends all summer long, but they can do things together. Have your child ask a friend to come with your family to events. Start Independence Day with a parade and end the day with fireworks. Jenny, our calendar editor, features lots of July Fourth activities on page 32. And, of course, you have to have food at your celebration. Preferably while holding something fried in one hand and something sweet in the other. You can’t beat it! We get there early, play all day and then roast hot dogs and marshmallows with friends while the sun goes down over the ocean. It’s pure magic! Researchers at San Diego State University (SDSU) and the University of Southern California (USC) have launched a new website to increase public awareness of thirdhand smoke. “There’s a big illusion that when tobacco smoke disappears, we’re safe,” says SDSU psychology professor and director of the Thirdhand Smoke Resource Center, Georg Matt. “Unfortunately, some of the most toxic compounds clinch to surfaces. Longer days and fewer morning commitments mean families can stay out later than usual. So, what are you waiting for? Fun Ways to Prevent Summer Slide

Kids who work hard during the school year should be able to play hard during summer break. If you’re concerned about summer learning loss (aka summer slide or brain drain), have no fear — in addition to tutoring centers and academic summer programs, there are plenty of opportunities in San Diego County to engage in educational play. Plan a week of local outings or pepper them throughout the summer. 9 ways to keep kids active this summer If you’re concerned your kids will

spend the summer lounging on the couch, playing Fortnite and watching YouTube videos, take charge and get ahead of the situation. Too much idle screen time negatively affects everything from obesity risk to healthy brain development. In order to improve the physical and mental health of your children this summer, take time to put electronic devices away and get moving. Here’s how to encourage exercise over electronics:

Keep it fun. Let’s be honest — most people don’t think of exercising as a particularly good time. But what about chasing bubbles, splashing in the pool, participating in a team sport or going on a sunset hike? Many kids enjoy fun, outdoor activities and they probably won’t even realize they’re exercising! Make it social. Who doesn’t want

Walk, ride or roll. Get out and

explore the neighborhood via foot or on wheels. Summer is the perfect time for the whole family to walk, skateboard, scooter and bike all over town. Ditch the minivan and implement exercise as an integral part of your summer transportation. Make Traveling with Kids a Lifelong Adventure Travel is loaded with benefits for families. It awakens curiosity and helps kids and parents feel more at home in the world while creating strong bonds and lasting memories. As kids grow, the fun of traveling together can grow right along with them. My youngest son and I have traveled together every year since he was in the fourth grade. We’ve toured big cities and explored remote islands. We’ve visited family, camped in forests and hiked in National Parks. This year we spent two weeks visiting Prague, Munich and Salzburg to celebrate his college graduation. Wherever we go, people ask, “How did you raise a young man who likes to travel with you?” With a few simple strategies, families never have to outgrow the fun of traveling together. Here’s how to keep the spirit of adventure growing in yours. Aim for quality time and shared memories. It’s easy to get caught up in plans and logistics and forget that traveling together is an opportunity for families to reconnect and enjoy each other’s company while exploring someplace new. Whether it’s an out-of-town visit with relatives, a cross-country road trip, or a visit to another country,

remember to put relationships first, not destinations or timetables. From planning to departure, through every leg of the journey, right up to the time you roll back into your driveway, aim for quality time and shared memories. Involve kids in the planning. Start talking with kids early about where your family is going (or would like to go) and how you’ll get there. Read books, search the web and learn as much as you can together about your destination. Even if you’re “just” visiting grandparents, get kids thinking about questions they might ask or local sites they want to see. Create a list of options and have each child choose one or two. Combine them with your choices to come up with a plan that includes something for everyone. Manage expectations. When traveling with kids, everything takes more time, so be sure to allow for it. Be prepared to wait in lines, search for misplaced items, and encounter less-than-friendly folks who aren’t interested in being helpful. Talk honestly about the likelihood that something may go wrong. Make it a game to see how quickly it happens and what must be done to overcome it. Keep a sense of humor and expect the unexpected. “Be in the moment and stay super

flexible,” says Solana Beach resident, Bonnie Reveley, who has traveled with her adult kids since they were infants. “Nothing will go perfectly, but take a look around and remember where you are. Even if you miss doing something you had your heart set on, you’re still on vacation. Make the best of it.” Don’t overschedule. Less is more when traveling with kids. Plan downtime and expect to see and do less than if you were going without them. When traveling with my son, we plan one outing a day (yes, one!), usually in the morning. Then we try to leave the rest of the day free for spur of the moment fun or relaxing. That might mean a nap or a snack, lingering at a bookstore or in a park, people watching, even getting caught up on the electronic messages we both miss when we’re unplugged. Pay attention. Don’t replace regular distractions of work, school and electronics with travel distractions of itineraries, expectations and demanding schedules. Slow down and connect with one another. Now is the time to pay closer attention to what’s happening in your child’s heart. Ask questions and stay curious about the person your child is becoming. Away from the demands of everyday
