Parenting in the AGE of
TECHNOLOGY by Gina Rosenfeld, MD
Like it or not, I have resolved that technology and smart devices are in our kids’ lives and are here to stay, which makes being a pediatrician and a parent more challenging. Our children are connected to the outside world like never before. Once given a smart device, no longer are they captive when they come home from school. Instead, they are very much connected to the outside world. This world helps them connect with their friends, teammates, teachers, and coaches, and opens a world of knowledge, but it can also open them up to a whole world of stress, anxiety, bullying, inappropriate information, and more. Home should be a space and place to feel safe, loved, nurtured, and free from worry and stress. However, when the unmonitored outside world is let in, some of the safety and values of home can melt away. This digital and ever-changing environment can be managed and the tools can be made positive, but with some consistent structure and awareness. Before sharing my tips to guide and monitor your children, tweens, and teens through this technology challenge, note one strong axiom - try and hold off their use of smart phones, tablets, and devices as long as you can. Once the inevitable happens, understand the technology
that you are allowing your kids to use. It’s really important that you sit down, understand, and plan a road map that is best for your family and your values. Your kids will want it all now, but understanding your child, their maturity, and when is the appropriate timing of allowing technology will be beneficial. With each stage comes rules and enforcement, and if you set and implement rules early, they are more apt to follow. So, let’s get started. Even before your child has a phone or tablet of their own, lead by example as you are your child’s biggest role model. Don’t have your cell phone at the dinner table, when helping with homework, or during the nighttime routine. Make sure to look at people when they’re talking to you — not at your phone. Again, your children are always watching you and they notice everything. Realistically, babies and very young children do not need technology. Instead, they need human interaction. For children ages 2-5, if you are going to share screen time, it should be limited to an hour a day and be educational. For school-age kids, screen time should not be all the time -set rules and limits; the AAP recommends no more than two hours a day. Encourage outside activities and don’t make technology a reward. Technology use should not be in a bedroom, but out in the open and supervised as kids can stumble onto all kinds of questionable stuff quite easily.
And now the real challenge, tweens and teens. Again, before embarking on the smart phone journey, make sure to have clearly stated rules and consequences in place. Set expectations, limits, routines, and guidelines. You can allow and restrict certain websites, apps, and social media accounts. Establish appropriate online behavior and privacy settings. Educate your kids on your family’s beliefs, principles, and values. Remember, smart phones are a privilege and you can and should monitor the time spent on them and your tween/ teens online presence/ behavior. Some of my recommendations: a) homework, studying, chores and activities always come first, b) charging occurs outside the bedroom, c) meal and family time is phone free, d) it is not only your right but a must to know, monitor, follow, and approve of the websites and apps your children are using, e) don’t share anything online that you wouldn’t be comfortable with the entire world reading, and f) no naked pictures ever. I could go on and on, but this should be a good start. Remember, parenting is not easy and technology has made it more challenging, however, we still have experience and wisdom on our side.

Our San Diego
Publisher’s Letter
Families
Summer of Fun, Make it Memorable! Summer time is fun time! If you are traveling or staying here in San Diego, make it memorable. Get the kids involved — asking for their input and making decisions together gives everyone a say. Jody Cates, our local “Parenting with Purpose” writer, provides great summer planning and travel tips. For instance, don’t overschedule. Instead, plan one activity per day, relax and enjoy the memory. Find more of Jody’s tips on page 26. What can you do here in San Diego County? Check out the Best of San Diego Summer, starting on page 16. There are activities including places to go, educational outings, fun events and more. Keeping semi-active throughout the summer is important. The kids cannot be in front of the computer or texting friends all summer long, but they can do things together. Have your child ask a friend to come with your family to events. Start Independence Day with a parade and end the day with fireworks. Jenny, our calendar editor, features lots of July Fourth activities on page 32. And, of course, you have to have food at your celebration. Learn how to make a yummy red, white and blue cheesecake on page 46, presented by Jackie Bruchez, local blogger and cookbook author. I would like to thank everyone who gave us feedback in the San Diego Family Magazine readership survey. We love hearing from our readers. Have a great summer! Enjoy your family, have fun connecting and making memories. Save the date: Our second annual All-Inclusive Day of Play (in partnership with the Special Needs Resource Foundation of San Diego) is August 7. Keep an eye on Facebook for details.

What does “best of San Diego summer” mean to you? Adrienne Sigeti, editorial assistant A sunny day wandering around the San Diego County Fair listening to live music, checking out the art exhibits and braving the rides, of course. Preferably while holding something fried in one hand and something sweet in the other. You can’t beat it! Jody Lee Cates, freelance writer It wouldn’t be summer in San Diego for my family without a bonfire at the beach. We get there early, play all day and then roast hot dogs and marshmallows with friends while the sun goes down over the ocean. It’s pure magic! Lisa Gipson, managing editor Summer means lots of basketball since my daughter plays club. This is her last year — and she just returned from a torn ACL — so we plan to enjoy every minute! In between tournaments, you’ll find us roaming our coastal communities, hitting ice cream shops and touring colleges. Tony Andrews, marketing representative We remind ourselves daily that living in San Diego is living someone else’s vacation. Our best San Diego summers include lots of beach days with friends and family, taking advantage of our great food scene and being a tourist by going to local theme parks!

Cooking combines reading, science and math concepts,
making it a unique way to help prevent summer slide (find more ideas on p. 18). Why not plan to cook with the kids while they’re out of school? Some families even have their kids make dinner once a week while on break —brilliant! Here are two products to help:
Researchers at San Diego State University (SDSU) and the University of Southern California (USC) have launched a new website to increase public awareness of thirdhand smoke. “There’s a big illusion that when tobacco smoke disappears, we’re safe,” says SDSU psychology professor and director of the Thirdhand Smoke Resource Center, Georg Matt. “Unfortunately, some of the most toxic compounds clinch to surfaces. They get embedded in carpets…they penetrate into walls. They become part of the indoor environment.” Learn more about the dangers and how to safeguard your family at www.thirdhandsmoke.org.
A is for America is the newest addition to the popular BabyLit board book series. It’s an engaging collection of illustrations by Greg Paprocki that pays homage to our country. Many San Diegans will say they haven’t experienced summer until they’ve attended one of San Diego County’s iconic summer events — and there are many. Longer days and fewer morning commitments mean families can stay out later than usual. So, what are you waiting for? Get off the couch and put down the video games — there’s just nothing better than summertime in San Diego! Where to start? America’s Finest City offers everything from world-famous Comic-Con International and San Diego Symphony’s Bayside Summer Nights to our beloved county fair (ends July 4) and California Dreaming Beach Parties at the Bahia Resort in Mission Bay. Don’t miss UltraStar Cinemas Kids’ Summer Series where kidfriendly movies are offered Monday through Thursday mornings for only one dollar per movie (movie changes weekly). If your kids identify more with night owls than early birds, consider treating Dad and the kids to Roar ‘n’ Snore Safari, an overnight adventure at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park.

If it’s FREE entertainment you’re looking for, plan an evening at Summer Movies in the Park or enjoy one of the many free outdoor concerts throughout the county. Choose from the season’s bountiful produce at a local farmers market or stroll through the food and art scene of Lane Field Park Market (along Harbor Drive, near Broadway Pier) on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Foodies also unite at Food Truck Fridays in Balboa Park every Friday during the summer from 4–8:30 p.m., complete with family-friendly activities and live entertainment.

SeaWorld Beluga Encounter saving in travel costs and hotel accommodations! Here are a bunch of ideas to get your PLAYcation started:
Take a family PLAYcation! So, what’s a PLAYcation? It’s a vacation centered on playing and having fun. Think about how many people flock to San Diego for vacation. San Diegans are “ahead of the game” when it comes to a fabulous getaway because all we have to do is open our front doors. No passports, train rides or layovers necessary. Why not spend some time playing this summer and do what out-of-towners do when they visit? Most of these activities have admission fees, but think of all you’re
Take a ride on the Giant Dipper Roller Coaster at Belmont Park, San Diego’s only beachfront amusement park. Treat your family to a behind-the-scenes educational tour at SeaWorld. There is a plethora of museums and cultural experiences available at Balboa Park. People-watching is also a favorite pastime at the park. If it’s outdoor adventures you crave, San Diego boasts 70 miles of coastline and beautiful beaches. Go snorkeling at La Jolla Cove or paddleboard in Mission Bay. Trek through dozens of hiking and biking trails in a myriad of scenic surroundings — Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve is not to
be missed. Explore the iconic Hotel Del and then spend an afternoon hanging out at Coronado Beach (if it’s good enough for past presidents and Hollywood royalty, it’s good enough for me). Learn something new about your hometown on an Old Town Trolley Tour and use the hop-on/off privileges to explore dozens of sites. If you’ve never been to the WorldFamous San Diego Zoo, plan to go this summer. You won’t regret it. It’s not like “world’s best cup of coffee” in the movie Elf. It’s literally the world’s best zoo – and it’s in your backyard — go already! A Hornblower Cruise is a fun way to learn about San Diego landmarks while enjoying gorgeous views and a bay breeze. Make it a point to explore up to 11 historic vessels (including a pirate ship and submarine) at the Maritime Museum San Diego, which also offers a full schedule of fun family events. Wrap up your PLAYcation with a 50s-style celebration and meal at Corvette Diner in Liberty Station. July 2019 • SanDiegofamily.com •

Fun Ways to Prevent Summer Slide
Kids who work hard during the school year should be able to play hard during summer break. If you’re concerned about summer learning loss (aka summer slide or brain drain), have no fear — in addition to tutoring centers and academic summer programs, there are plenty of opportunities in San Diego County to engage in educational play. Plan a week of local outings or pepper them throughout the summer. The kids will have so much fun, they won’t even realize they’re brushing up on science and math concepts, history or artistic skills. Here are fun outings that help prevent summer slide.
SUMMER
Stimulate Creativity Creating art promotes critical thinking and helps develop fine motor skills. Spend some time this summer exploring different art mediums, especially if art is missing from your child’s school curriculum. Get started with drawing and painting (or hone your craft) at Little Artists, which has five locations throughout the county. Little Fish Comic Book Studio offers instruction in comic creation, storytelling and digital drawing, by teachers who love what they do and inspire creativity in their students. Design a trendy wood plank sign, photo frame, tote bag and more at DIY headquarters, AR Workshop in Hillcrest. Take the family for an afternoon of candle making, mosaics and pottery painting at Hot Spot Pottery & Painting.

When kids can make connections through experience, the lessons tend to stick. And there’s no better way to learn history than bringing it to life. Explore dinosaur fossils, learn about biodiversity and journey through SoCal’s unique habitats at San Diego Natural History Museum, now offering extended summer hours most Thursdays and Fridays with Nat at Night. Indulge in a day of naval history aboard the USS Midway Museum. Enhance your aircraft carrier visit with an overnight adventure — several Family Overnights are offered this summer. Early California history comes to life in Old Town San Diego with self-guided tours of the adobe house La Casa de Estudillo, Seeley Stable (featuring vehicles from the 1800s), demonstrations in the blacksmith shop and much more. Kids can take a Junior Ranger voyage of discovery as they learn about 16th century exploration and military history at Cabrillo National Monument in Point Loma. Kids in Motion
9 ways to keep kids active this summer If you’re concerned your kids will
spend the summer lounging on the couch, playing Fortnite and watching YouTube videos, take charge and get ahead of the situation. Too much idle screen time negatively affects everything from obesity risk to healthy brain development. In order to improve the physical and mental health of your children this summer, take time to put electronic devices away and get moving. Here’s how to encourage exercise over electronics:
Keep it fun. Let’s be honest — most people don’t think of exercising as a particularly good time. But what about chasing bubbles, splashing in the pool, participating in a team sport or going on a sunset hike? Many kids enjoy fun, outdoor activities and they probably won’t even realize they’re exercising! Read more about this topic in Fun Over Fitness: Focus on Family Playtime at www.sandiegofamily.com/healthguide/fun-over-fitness-focus-onfamily-playtime
Make it social. Who doesn’t want
to hang out with friends? Invite other kids to join your kids for an active play session. Head to the beach with boogie boards or a Smashball set, or go to the park with a Frisbee, jump ropes, and a soccer ball. If you prefer being indoors, consider a rock climbing gym, indoor trampoline park or skating rink.
Walk, ride or roll. Get out and
explore the neighborhood via foot or on wheels. Summer is the perfect time for the whole family to walk, skateboard, scooter and bike all over town. Ditch the minivan and implement exercise as an integral part of your summer transportation. This way, even when you’re heading to a sedentary activity like the library or movies, you can still incorporate exercise into the day’s plan. Love to skateboard? Get a list of countywide skateparks at www.sandiegofamily.com/teen/ skateparks-in-san-diego-county.
Give active gifts. Kids love new stuff (who doesn’t?) and summer is
a great time to treat them to a new football, jump rope, hula-hoop or roller skates. Your child likely has plenty of time to enjoy new sports equipment now — along with the associated health benefits that these gifts bring (when used!). Parenting with Purpose

Make Traveling with Kids a Lifelong Adventure Travel is loaded with benefits for families. It awakens curiosity and helps kids and parents feel more at home in the world while creating strong bonds and lasting memories. As kids grow, the fun of traveling together can grow right along with them. My youngest son and I have traveled together every year since he was in the fourth grade. We’ve toured big cities and explored remote islands. We’ve visited family, camped in forests and hiked in National Parks. This year we spent two weeks visiting Prague, Munich and Salzburg to celebrate his college graduation. Wherever we go, people ask, “How did you raise a young man who likes to travel with you?” With a few simple strategies, families never have to outgrow the fun of traveling together. Here’s how to keep the spirit of adventure growing in yours. Aim for quality time and shared memories. It’s easy to get caught up in plans and logistics and forget that traveling together is an opportunity for families to reconnect and enjoy each other’s company while exploring someplace new. Whether it’s an out-of-town visit with relatives, a cross-country road trip, or a visit to another country,

remember to put relationships first, not destinations or timetables. From planning to departure, through every leg of the journey, right up to the time you roll back into your driveway, aim for quality time and shared memories. Involve kids in the planning. Start talking with kids early about where your family is going (or would like to go) and how you’ll get there. Read books, search the web and learn as much as you can together about your destination. Even if you’re “just” visiting grandparents, get kids thinking about questions they might ask or local sites they want to see. Create a list of options and have each child choose one or two. Combine them with your choices to come up with a plan that includes something for everyone. Manage expectations. When traveling with kids, everything takes more time, so be sure to allow for it. Be prepared to wait in lines, search for misplaced items, and encounter less-than-friendly folks who aren’t interested in being helpful. Talk honestly about the likelihood that something may go wrong. Make it a game to see how quickly it happens and what must be done to overcome it. Keep a sense of humor and expect the unexpected. “Be in the moment and stay super
flexible,” says Solana Beach resident, Bonnie Reveley, who has traveled with her adult kids since they were infants. “Nothing will go perfectly, but take a look around and remember where you are. Even if you miss doing something you had your heart set on, you’re still on vacation. Make the best of it.” Don’t overschedule. Less is more when traveling with kids. Plan downtime and expect to see and do less than if you were going without them. When traveling with my son, we plan one outing a day (yes, one!), usually in the morning. Then we try to leave the rest of the day free for spur of the moment fun or relaxing. That might mean a nap or a snack, lingering at a bookstore or in a park, people watching, even getting caught up on the electronic messages we both miss when we’re unplugged. Pay attention. Don’t replace regular distractions of work, school and electronics with travel distractions of itineraries, expectations and demanding schedules. Slow down and connect with one another. Now is the time to pay closer attention to what’s happening in your child’s heart. Ask questions and stay curious about the person your child is becoming. Away from the demands of everyday

Keep kids engaged. You’ve chosen age appropriate destinations and activities. You’ve paid attention to your child’s interests and allowed time for relaxing and having fun. What more can you do to keep kids engaged? Teens, in particular, may have rolled their eyes once or twice since leaving home. Think of ways to give older kids ownership. Ask a map lover to handle navigation, the smartphone photographer to keep a video log, the budding journalist to record each day’s activities in a travel journal. Kids are more engaged when they have a fun job to do. Grow kids who love traveling with you. Making travel enjoyable when kids are young helps them be positive about traveling with parents as they grow. “Most of the traveling I did as a child revolved around visiting family — that’s what I thought travel consisted of,” says Nicole Shepard of Rancho Peñasquitos. “But for my high school graduation, my mom arranged a twoweek trip to Germany and Austria, and I’ve had wanderlust ever since.” Nicole recently launched an online travel business called The Ticket Girl inspired by her love of travel. “Navigating a foreign country with my mom is one of the best experiences I’ve ever had, and those are memories I will treasure forever.” How will your kids remember your family vacations? When parents fill trips with wonder, humor and a spirit of adventure, they create lasting memories and strong family bonds that will have kids wanting to travel with them for years. v Jody Lee Cates is a travel-loving mom and blogger who writes about healthy relationships at www.jodyleecates.com.

Berry Cheesecake This gorgeous berry cheesecake is the perfect dessert for summertime celebrations. It’s elegant enough for special occasions and easy enough for backyard barbecues — and it’s sure to please a crowd! The culinary delight features traditional cream cheese filling and classic graham cracker crust, but what sets it apart is a sweet cream topping and mixed berry coulis (sauce made from puréed fresh fruit). Get the recipe at www.theseasidebaker.com/berry-cheesecake-recipe.
We are thrilled to partner with Jackie Bruchez, Oceanside mom and food blogger at The Seaside Baker. Find a ton of fresh summer recipes in Jackie’s beautiful new cookbook Decadent Fruit Desserts.
