Summer Fun, Enjoyed Differently Yay, San Diego is opening up and many museums and summer camps are now open! Time for the kids to change up their routines, learn new skills and have some outdoor fun. Check out all the camps in this issue and be sure to sign the kids up ASAP because camps are limited in size. We are missing the excitement of Comic-Con 2020 this year since all large gatherings are cancelled, but San Diego Family comes to the rescue. Look at page 32 to find how to celebrate Comic-Con at home all month long. We are also missing the Olympic Games in Tokyo, originally scheduled for July/August. On page 34 are ideas to have your own Olympics. There are many watch parties from past years listed, but we will miss the five new sports that would have been presented this year. I am so sorry for all the athletes who worked hard to prepare for this Olympics. On July 4, American Independence Day, we celebrate our country’s 244th birthday and the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. With all the things happening in the past 3-4 months, our country is different. We need to stay healthy, safe and proud to be an American. Pages 50 & 52 give you fun things to do for July 4. Check our online round-up for fireworks displays and more. National Carousel Day is celebrated July 25. There is a beautiful carousel in Balboa Park, adjacent to the San Diego Zoo. Read about its history on page 24. When it re-opens, go for a ride and see if you can grab the brass ring!

Join us this summer for a virtual version of our ever-popular model train railroad camp! Campers will create a small model railroad layout as they are fully engaged in STEAM learning curriculum. Educators will introduce the various steps in creating a model railroad, as campers paint, plaster, lay track and construct a mini-town, complete with trees, trains and people! Most materials are included in the cost. For San Diego residents, a designated pick-up time for supplies will be provided. For all others, supplies will be mailed to you prior to the start of camp.

HAPPY CAMPERS Tips to help children with their first camp experience
After months of quarantine, your
kids are probably excited to get outside and enjoy being with peers at summer camp. While you’re also ready for a bit of freedom, you may be worried to send your little camper to unfamiliar territory. Help prepare kids with these tips to make his first camp experience a positive one.
The Basics • Have children memorize their full name, address and a parent’s phone number before camp begins. • Many day camps require closed-toe shoes and may need kids to get shoes on and off quickly. Practice tying shoelaces; if your little one hasn’t mastered this skill before camp

starts, consider a pair of Velcro shoes. Do trial runs until he masters getting shoes on and off in a timely manner. Practice makes perfect! • Children should be able to zip their own pants and sweatshirts (or wear pull-ons so they are self-sufficient). Teach them to tie a sweatshirt around their waist. • Apply sunscreen before leaving for camp; children who attend full-day camp should know how and when to reapply.
Practice Active Listening and Assertive Communication • Be sure your child listens to and follows directions. This year
especially, camps will emphasize health and safety. Following directions is vital to keeping everyone safe while having fun. Practice active listening skills by asking kids to follow multi-step directions following sequential order. • Review camp rules together before camp starts to help manage expectations. Note that a child who pouts until he gets his way may not be ready for camp. • Practice simple, direct responses to communicate dissatisfaction if and when necessary. Such as, “I don’t like that. Don’t do it again.” If an annoying or inappropriate behavior continues from another child, ask a camp counselor for help.
• Practice speaking up in matters of safety, such as wearing a mask or social distancing. Act as a role model in public to show kids how. • Children should know how (and be willing) to ask for help when needed. If he has a special need, let camp staff know ahead of time. Kids and staff can even agree on a signal to get a staff member’s attention. • Have kids practice asking for what they want (politely). Manners go a long way. You’ve taught your child “please” and “thank you”—be sure he says these important phrases without your cue.
Make Lunch Stress-Free • Packaging often poses a problem for little fingers. Practice opening wrappers and containers at home. Don’t assume camp staff will have time to assist everyone at lunchtime. • Handwashing is sure to be emphasized, but it’s OK to ask camp staff if hand wipes, sanitizer or placemats are allowed in
lunchboxes. Practice using these items with kids at home. • One in 13 children has a food allergy; it’s likely that someone at camp will, too. Swapping snacks sounds like fun, but it’s not safe as cross-contamination can pose a big problem for kids allergic to nuts or gluten. Teach children not to share food and to respect other people’s space by not touching their lunchbox and food. • Stop yourself the next time you start to clean up after your kids. Teach children how to sort trash from recyclables, throw items in proper bins, and most importantly, not to expect adults to clean up after them. Part of being successful, happy campers is for kids to help out and do their part.
Social Skill Essentials For many first-time campers, enrolling with a buddy helps ease jitters. But it’s important to gain the confidence and skills to make new friends. Review and roleplay skills that show openness to making friends:
• Practice how to greet someone new. Make eye contact and smile. • When someone says “hi”, teach children to reply, even if they feel shy. Not responding may be misconstrued that a child doesn’t want to be friends. • Teach children to take turns. • Discuss the idea that not everyone has to be friends—especially if your child is a people pleaser. Camp is a place to try new things and have fun doing so. Let kids know they’re expected to participate in all activities, and that it’s OK if they don’t do everything just right. Kids who follow directions and are willing to venture into “new territory” have an opportunity to learn many skills that build confidence and independence, while making new friends along the way. v Cherie Gough is a local freelance writer and mom of two who enjoys the enrichment camp brings to summer break.

Program Highlights: Summer may look different, but it’s not canceled! Young people in kindergarten through 8th grade can enjoy a summer of fun. Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego (BGCGSD) is offering a limited and modified Summer Camp for the Summer of 2020 at three locations: 4S Ranch Branch, Clairemont Branch and Conrad Prebys Escondido Branch. Playin’ Around: Get to Know San Diego’s Historic Carousel
What goes around comes around, they say, and that’s especially true on a carousel! Did you know that Balboa Park is home to one of the most historic carousels in the nation? In honor of National Carousel Day (July 25), get to know San Diego’s historic gem and have some fun commemorating the event at home. Between 1900 and 1925 more than 4,000 carousels were created in the United States, fewer than 200 of which exist today. The Balboa Park Carousel was built in 1910 and took a circuitous route to its current location. Originally erected in Los Angeles, the carousel was moved to Coronado in 1913 as part of the town’s Tent City. In 1922 it was moved to Balboa Park, at the location now occupied by Fleet Science Center. It finally found its home adjacent to the San Diego Zoo in 1968. long. “I enjoyed riding the Balboa Park Carousel as a child and noticed how much fun the people who worked there were having,” he says. After being told he had to wait until he was 16 to be hired, he bided his time until 1972 when he started operating the brass ring game. “I eventually worked my way up and have been operating and taking care of the carousel ever since.” The brass ring was ubiquitous at all carousels in their heyday. Hanging just out of reach from the rotating platform, a rider lucky enough to stretch out and grab the brass ring won a prize—usually another go-round on the carousel. Balboa Park’s carousel is one of only 12 in the U.S. that still has an operating brass ring game. The ride is also famous for being a menagerie carousel, meaning filled with a variety of animals to sit astride (not just horses). Most well-known are frogs, decked out in tuxedos. Some believe the 1908 classic The Wind in the Willows was the inspiration for their attire, as Mr. Toad was always sartorially resplendent. Almost all of the carousel animals are original, as are the beautiful paintings on the center panels and the outer rounding-boards, the band organ, and the brass ring. Another fun fact about the carousel is its speed. Clocking in at 13 mph, it’s one of the fastest ever made. Brown recalls a recent visit by a carousel expert who bragged his hometown carousel was the fastest anywhere. He sat in the rocking chair, which kids love, but is often too wild for adults. “After the ride was up to full speed, I asked him whose is faster,” Brown says. “As he was rocking back and forth, he yelled, ‘I take it back! Keep the torch lit CELEBRATE the OLYMPIC GAMES Though the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo are postponed until summer 2021, families can still stage a celebration at home! Here are ideas that will add backyard fun and friendly competition to your summer plans. Keep all ages engaged by choosing challenges that accommodate a variety of strengths and abilities. Team Up
With four or more people, make two Olympic teams. Wear Olympic colorcoded tees, wristbands, socks or caps to distinguish each team.
Have an Opening Ceremony
Make a simple torch by gluing red, orange and yellow construction paper flames to the top of an empty toilet paper roll. Hang simple decorations in the backyard, such as a paper chain using Olympic colors or posters painted with Olympic rings. Stream Olympic-themed music while teams take turns passing the torch. Each family member does a lap around the yard, then passes the torch to the next person.

Play traditional games that don’t require lots of set up and that all ages enjoy, such as egg-and-spoon race, wheelbarrow race and these activities: Water Balloon Toss Have team members stand apart and throw a water balloon (underhand) to each other. Take a step back after each successful catch. Continue passing the balloon back and forth until someone drops it. Last team to drop the balloon is the winner. Hula Hoop Endurance Collect enough hula hoops that each family member has one. See who can hoop the longest. World Map Memory Test your family’s knowledge of world geography (best for elementary age kids and older). Give teams five minutes to look at a globe, world map, or atlas, then have them label a blank printout of a world map. Bonus points for countries labeled and spelled correctly.
Paper Airplane Competition Each team makes one paper airplane to match their team color. Stand behind the start line and throw your plane. The team whose airplane goes the farthest is the winner. Bonus point for most artistic airplane design (judge’s discretion).
Close with an Awards Ceremony Have crafty family members make medals from construction paper and ribbon. The ultimate prize: getting dessert first and not having to do the dishes!
Curling Indoor Game Yes, curling is a winter sport, but no ice is needed in this curling competition, so why not include it in your Olympic Games summer activities? exciting to shake up your routine? Scavenger hunts are great family entertainment! Plus, they get kids off the couch and exploring familiar surroundings with fresh eyes. Whether you have tykes or teens, we have tons of ideas that bring adventure to your home, backyard or neighborhood walk. Who doesn’t love hunting for surprises?
DIY Scavenger Hunts In an alphabet scavenger hunt, kids hunt for objects beginning with a designated letter of the alphabet. Help kids get familiar with how to find books at the library by searching your own bookshelf. Look for books by authors whose names begin with the same letter; for older kids, have them put your books in alphabetical order by last name. Teach kids the five senses (touch, sight, hearing, smell and taste) before launching a sensory adventure. Take a walk and look for natural objects that are soft, rough, smooth, sticky, wet or fuzzy. Listen for birds, rustling leaves, laughter, chimes, a lawnmower, etc. Lie on a blanket outside and observe cloud

on Pak knew there was a more effective way to help children who struggle academically, socially, or behaviorally – namely, through a coordinated, child-centric effort. As the father of a son with Down Syndrome, an uncle to a child with Asperger’s Syndrome, and a friend to parents with struggling children, Jon paired his personal experience with his passion for helping people and his entrepreneurial roots to open the doors of Brain Balance of San Diego. Brain Balance serves struggling children with an integrative and holistic approach. “We’re bringing a much needed nonmedical solution to a widespread problem affecting families of all walks of life,” Jon said. Through a personalized combination of in-center sessions, at-home activities, and a nutrition program, Brain Balance addresses the individual gaps for each child to improve focus, behavior, social skills, sensory processing, and academics. “The team cares deeply about our students and, as each child is different, we discuss strategies for each one of them to create the biggest impact possible,” Jon acknowledged. Backed by a program developed and continuously improved by research that has been proven successful on over 30,000 children, the Brain Balance team creates individualized
plans to strengthen the child’s weaker areas, including sensory engagement, core muscle strength and coordination, eye tracking, auditory processing, academic guidance, and nutritional guidance. “Gaps and holes in development result in gaps and holes in behavior, academics, socialization, and confidence,” Jon explained. “Our program focuses on improving the foundation of development and brain connectivity rather than masking or coping with symptoms.” Those symptoms can range from lack of focus and meltdowns to lack of confidence and social struggles. Jon and his team work mainly with children from Pre-K to 12th grade with or without a diagnosis and also offer a new program for college-age students. “I’d like to encourage parents to challenge the system,” Jon shared. “A label doesn’t necessarily help the child and medication is only a coping strategy that in the long run doesn’t provide any improvement while oftentimes affects the development of the child.” Since opening their doors earlier this year, Jon and his team are experiencing the results. “Whenever our parents share their stories on how things are better at school, at home, making new friends, doing things they would have never imagined in the past, we get so pumped up that it makes us want to work
harder and spread the love to every family out there dealing with their unique challenges,” Jon shared. “If you and your child are struggling and nothing has worked for you, there’s hope.” ¢
