The Importance of COVID-19 Vaccines for Children Children 6 months and up now qualify for the COVID-19 Vaccines and fully vaccinated children 5 and up qualify for the vaccine booster.
Interview with Kelly Motadel, MD, MPH, and County Child Health Officer for the County Medical Care Services Division Why is it important for children 6 months and up to get the COVID-19 vaccine? Children represent 19% of all COVID infections in the US. Children 0-4 years of age have significantly higher rates of infection than any other pediatric age group, likely because they have not had access to the vaccine. Additionally, hospitalization rates for children 0-4 years of age are higher than they are for children 5-17 and seem to be at higher risk of severe disease if they do get infected. With masking requirements and other mitigation measures fading from our communities, the vaccine remains the safest way to prevent serious illness from COVID-19 at any age. Why is it important for children 5 years and up that are fully vaccinated to get the booster dose? As with many other vaccines we have, we know that protection from the COVID vaccine can decrease after a while and an additional dose is needed to strengthen the protection it provides. The COVID vaccine booster was shown to increase that protection safely. With COVID cases rising, and with weddings, summer vacations, and other activities planned in the upcoming months, now is the best time to get them boosted. Is it better for my child to get natural immunity to COVID-19, rather than immunity from a vaccine and booster? No. Infection has unpredictable risks. Vaccines consistently have been shown to be safe. With natural infection children can suffer from long-COVID symptoms or a life-threatening complication called multi-system inflammatory syndrome of children, even if they only had mild illness when infected. Even if they have no symptoms, if they test positive, they will miss several days of school, camp or other activities. What is often

described as “mild illness” can still mean unnecessary suffering with several days of respiratory symptoms, fever, fatigue, and more. Is the vaccine safe for younger children? What are the risks of my child being unvaccinated? Clinical trials have shown the vaccine to be safe for younger children when it is at a dose that is appropriate for them. The Pfizer vaccine dose for children 6 months - 4 years is one tenth the dose we are using in adults and the Moderna vaccine dose for children 6 months - 5 years is one - fourth the adult dose. Side effects were shown to be mild during the clinical trial, such as arm pain, fever, headache and /or irritability, and these symptoms resolved quickly. There were no reports of heart inflammation in infants and young children who received the vaccine. Are the vaccines and booster for children the same dosage and number of shots as adults? How does this affect children? No. Children 5 to 11 years receive one-third the Pfizer dose that older adolescents and adults receive – 10 micrograms versus 30 micrograms in each of the two doses needed in the primary series. Younger children will be receiving just 3 micrograms in each of the three dose series they will need. If Moderna vaccine is used, adults receive 100 micrograms, 12-17 year olds receive 50 micrograms, and 6-11 year olds receive 25 micrograms. All age groups need two doses to complete their primary series for the Moderna vaccine. Can children get a flu shot and/or other routine vaccines at or around the same time as the COVID-19 vaccines and booster dose? Yes, any other vaccine can be given at the same time as or around the same time as the COVID-19 vaccine.
What are common side effects of the vaccine and booster dose in younger children? Similar to adults, children often experience pain at the injection site, fatigue or headaches but these symptoms are mild and resolve quickly. Infants and toddlers (6 to 36 months) were more often noted to have fever, irritability, sleepiness, and loss of appetite. Should my child get the vaccine even if previously sick with COVID-19? Yes, even if your child has had COVID-19, they should get vaccinated. Natural immunity alone is less protective than full vaccination and it is unknown how long natural immunity truly lasts. If a child is currently ill (with a cold, flu, or strep throat), can they get the COVID-19 vaccine or booster dose? It is best to wait until a child is no longer ill before getting the COVID-19 vaccine. It is not dangerous to get it while ill; however, they should stay home until they feel better to avoid infecting others. Is there any child who should not get the COVID-19 vaccine? For example, if they have allergies, they’re immunocompromised, or have a current medical condition. It is extremely uncommon to have a medical reason not to get the COVID-19 vaccine. If someone is allergic to a component of the vaccine, they should consult with their physician to see if it is safe to receive the vaccine. Those who are immunocompromised or have
a current medical condition are encouraged to get the vaccine as they may be at higher risk for severe illness if they do get a COVID-19 infection. Will the vaccine and/or booster dose give my child COVID or change their DNA? No, the COVID-19 vaccine cannot cause a COVID-19 infection. None of the COVID-19 vaccines contain the live virus that causes COVID-19. Instead, they teach our immune systems how to recognize and fight the COVID-19 virus. The mRNA in the vaccine approved for children are instructions for how to make a protein or even just a piece of protein and it does not reach the nucleus of the cells where our DNA is located. Therefore, the vaccines do not alter or change a person’s DNA. Can COVID-19 vaccine and/or booster dose affect puberty and/or the future fertility of my child? The unfounded claims linking COVID-19 vaccines to infertility have been scientifically disproven. There is no evidence that the vaccine can lead to loss of fertility. Similarly, there is no evidence that the COVID-19 vaccine affects puberty. In fact, pregnant women who have been vaccinated have lower rates of miscarriage and are less likely to be hospitalized from COVID-19.

While out-of-towners are flocking to San Diego for vacation this summer, perhaps you’re ready for a family getaway yourself. About five hours north of San Diego, El Capitan Canyon offers the best of glamping in Santa Barbara. Choose from furnished cedar cabins or adventure yurts, surrounded by the tranquility of nature in a camp-like setting. Enjoy sycamore and oak trees, the Santa Ynez Mountains, a llama farm with stunning ocean views, and the beach is just a bike ride or twominute drive away.
