Getaways
While out-of-towners are flocking to San Diego for vacation this summer, perhaps you’re ready for a family getaway yourself. Many parents are asking where to take the kids for a few days that’s within driving distance. Here are several great ideas. Find more in the Family Travel section of our website under Things to Do. About five hours north of San Diego, El Capitan Canyon offers the best of glamping in Santa Barbara. Choose from furnished cedar cabins or adventure yurts, surrounded by the tranquility of nature in a camp-like setting. Enjoy sycamore and oak trees, the Santa Ynez Mountains, a llama farm with stunning ocean views, and the beach is just a bike ride or twominute drive away. Plenty of family activities and amenities are offered for guests, including a children’s playground, swimming pool, on-site restaurant, hiking trails, a summer concert series, and for adults—wine tasting and free use of beach cruisers. Bonus: Solvang is only half an hour away. www.elcapitancanyon.com
If you’re prepared to venture farther (or already have plans to visit Northern California), head over to the coastal town of Mendocino. You’ll find quaint shops, hiking, Glass Beach, the World-Famous Skunk Train and much more between there and nearby Fort Bragg. Little River Inn offers spectacular ocean views and a wonderful grassy hill to relax, soak in the natural beauty of the area or have a picnic. Spacious rooms feature soaking tubs, and many have unbelievable views from the room’s deck. On property is a fabulous restaurant and golf course.
