Epic Summer

The kids work hard during the school year, so why not let them play hard during the summer (with sufficient rest, too, of course). The key to an epic summer is to have so much fun that you forget to check your phone, whether it’s building forts with couch cushions or taking a dream vacation. Here are 10 ways to have an epic summer. Check back next month for more ideas.

1. Splash Around

Beat the summer heat with water play at San Diego’s awesome splash pads and spraygrounds. From Chula Vista to San Marcos, many local parks offer fountains and water features so little ones can splash around. 2. Get “Wild” After Dark

3. Superheroes (and Comic-Con fans), Assemble!

Cosplay superheroes and Hollywood stars flood downtown San Diego with the arrival of Comic-Con at the convention center (July 20–23). No tickets? No problem. Swim Safely to Make Summer a Splashing Success

Swimming is one of summer’s great joys, but can be tricky to navigate. Reluctant swimmers, group activities and potential dangers make it essential to have a plan that keeps everyone safe in the water while having fun this summer.

Safety First

Safety is the foundation for successful swimming experiences.

“Never let kids swim alone,” says Mike Morrill, owner of Floaties Swim School. “Even if they’ve had lessons, it’s always best to have a swim buddy.”

Additional safety guidelines include:

• Designate a person to watch the water and keep a close eye on the kids. “Close eye” meaning undistracted and in close proximity to swimmers. Ideally, this person would be a lifeguard, but that may not always be possible.

• Know the swimming abilities of everyone in the water.

• Take CPR training.

• Keep a phone nearby to call 911 quickly, if needed.

• Use approved safety devices appropriate for the chosen activity, whether it be swim vest, safety floatation device or life jacket. Ensure adults wear life jackets when needed; setting a good example for kids is also important.

• “Always swim in lifeguard zones at the beach,” says Morrill.

Learn the Basics

Kids as young as infants can become comfortable in the water with proper lessons. Toddlers will learn how to be in and around water safely and start to learn to swim. Certified instructors guide children in age-appropriate activities and teach fundamentals, including floating and treading water— important life preservation skills in

case of emergency. Any age is a good age for kids to take their first swim lesson, but the earlier they start, the more time kids have to grow into strong, confident swimmers.

Note for adults: It is never too late to learn swimming skills. If you don’t know how to swim or cannot swim well, seek lessons from an instructor who works with adults.

Address Issues

Swimming and water play aren’t fun for everyone. Sometimes kids are reluctant to be near water or have fears based on previous experiences. Other times, parents are uncertain, so pools and beaches are avoided altogether to keep everyone “safe.” The best (and safest) solution is to address issues honestly and with patience.

Reluctant swimmers. Take a calm, non-pressured approach to water exposure and learning. Find an instructor who has experience with reluctant swimmers. Pushing kids into water so they “get over it” is never a good solution; neither is avoiding water altogether. Exposing kids in a safe, encouraging way is advised.

Refusal to swim. If your child refuses to try learning basic water skills, it can be tempting to give in, thinking it’s not essential. Be firm in your resolve to walk through it with your child. A general level of comfort and ability in the water could be lifesaving later on. Fear of water. If your child experiences or sees a scary water event, it may be hard to try swimming again. Give your child space to talk about the issue. Consider talking to your pediatrician or a counselor to help process the event and how to move forward.

Whether you are at the pool, a lake or the beach, swimming is meant to be fun. These tips will help ensure your family looks forward to water play this summer and throughout the year. v

Creative Ways to Help Kids Embrace Summer Reading

The idea of summer reading always sounds good, but putting it into practice can be a challenge, especially if you have a child who isn’t interested in spending precious summer days with his head in a book. Good news—there are creative ways to encourage kids to keep reading, even if they’re not excited about it.

Why it’s Important

The lack of structured learning during the much-needed summer break can result in a loss of academic and socialemotional skills that kids worked so hard to gain during the school year. Summer reading is a powerful tool that helps bridge the gap.

Start with Your Local Library

Make a visit to the library a regular part of your routine. Get to know the librarians. Have a special library tote bag. The more comfortable kids are in a library, the more likely they are to read and enjoy reading. Beyond a trove of reading possibilities, most libraries offer summer reading programs geared to specific ages.

Have a Family Book Club

Each week, choose a book for the whole family to read, either on your own or together, then have a book chat to discuss it. Make it fun by having a themed dinner or snack while each person shares their favorite parts of the story. Give everyone a chance to choose a new book.

Connect with a Reading Buddy

Encourage reading by pairing kids with a buddy, such as an age-level peer, a sibling or a grandparent. Setting aside time each week for the pair to read together will help children look forward to reading time.

Designate Rainy Day Reading Time

Rainy days are perfect for reading, but since San Diego has almost no rain in the summer, “designate” is the important part of this tip (and requires some imagination). Establish a time (maybe a couple days a month) to build a fort with couch cushions and blankets or pitch a tent and fill it with pillows to create a cozy space to curl up with a stack of books. You could even set the mood with soothing rain sounds in the background. Kids will surely look forward to “rainy day reading!”

Take a Book-Themed Vacation

Make a book come to life by embarking on book-inspired activities or destinations for family vacation. Taking a road trip through California? Visit Bookstores

While it’s easy to order books online, there is something special about visiting a bookstore. Kids enjoy exploring and imagining all the stories they can read. Make a weekly trip, stop in occasionally, or visit bookstores in other cities for a fun family tradition. Have you ever been to Powell’s in Portland, Oregon? It’s easy to spend an entire day there! Some bookstores have summer reading games or activities, so be sure to ask.

Meet Authors and Illustrators

It’s exciting to meet someone who created a book, especially if it’s a book you enjoyed reading. Check local libraries and bookstores for author events near you. Read the author or illustrator’s book ahead of time and bring it with you for a fun photo opportunity and great summer memory.

Let Kids Choose Reading Material

Summer offers a great break from the structure of assigned school reading. Give kids the chance to stretch their reading muscles and discover new genres by allowing them to pick what they read. They might choose fiction, nonfiction, poetry, graphic novels, magazines, e-books or audiobooks. The most important point is that they read. When kids are given a variety of opportunities to enjoy books, they are more likely to read. What if math was a fun puzzle that you couldn’t wait to explore?
