THE IMPORTANCE OF COVID-19 VACCINES FOR CHILDREN 5 TO 11 YEARS OLD Provided by Kelly Motadel, MD, MPH, and County Child Health Officer for the Health and Human Services Agency
It’s important for children ages 5-11 years old to get the COVID-19 vaccine because it can protect them, but also those around them who may be at even higher risk for severe disease and death. During the Omicron surge, unvaccinated children 5-11 years old had 2-3 times higher hospitalization rates than those who were vaccinated. If hospitalized, they are more likely to require a ventilator and/or admission to the intensive care unit. Additionally, children 5-11 years old are at the highest risk for Multi-system Inflammatory Syndrome of Childhood (MIS-C), a life-threatening illness associated with a current or recent COVID infection. Vaccines consistently have been shown to be safe and effective. Almost 10 million children 5-11 years old have been vaccinated and side effects were mild and brief. Natural immunity alone is less protective than full vaccination and it is unknown how long natural immunity truly lasts. With natural infection, children can suffer from long-COVID symptoms or MIS-C even if they only had mild illness when infected. Even if they have no symptoms, if they test positive, they will miss several days of school. What is often described as “mild illness” can still mean unnecessary suffering with several days of respiratory symptoms, fever, loss of taste or smell, and more. Children can get the COVID-19 vaccine at the same time or around the same time as any other vaccine. Those who are immunocompromised or have a current medical condition are encouraged to get the vaccine as they may be at higher risk for severe illness if they do get the COVID-19 infection. It’s Dad’s Day and Graduation Time! This month we want to give a big shout-out to San Diego dads. Happy Father’s Day (June 19)! Throughout the magazine, we feature many San Diego County dads with their kids. Dads are so important to families; do your best to be involved and be the best dad you can. Spend time with the kids and help them when needed. They will love you for it. As local author Minh Lê describes in his book “The Blur” (see p. 16), kids grow up too fast. Enjoy every phase! Dads need friendship with other dads, just as moms need other moms. See page 14 to read about the benefits of gathering with dad groups. It could be just to enjoy pizza and a soda or beer, but you will be surprised what other dads know and what you can offer them. Find other dads in your neighborhood, church or at a local meet-up group. Who doesn’t like sweets? Honey is a great substitute for sugar. To get honey, we need honey bees (plus, bees are the pollinators for many crops). Read about what kids can do to support and protect honey bees on p. 18. Many people are afraid of bees, but they are our friends. My grandson Tyler is graduating from high school this month. He has done great in school and sports—going to state tournaments in both track and volleyball. Congratulations, Tyler! In the fall, we will have four grandkids in college. Love and hug your kids every day; before long, they will be out of the house and having kids of their own. Happy Dad’s Day and congratulations to all our students. Have a great summer!

feelings of isolation or loneliness as a father is to join (or start) a fathers’ group. Even in California, where there are support groups for people who belong to too many support groups, the idea of being involved in a fathers’ group sounds a little risky. But it’s a risk well worth taking.
Women get a ton of parenting (and other) advice from other women: where to take kids on rainy days, surefire cures for illnesses, ways to soothe crying babies, finding and hiring babysitters. You’d be surprised how much you already know, and how much you’ll be able to help other men.
I’ve led a number of groups for new dads, and they always start the same way, with a discussion of sports, news or anything but parenting. Then, almost by accident, someone will say something about a child, and the floodgates open. Stories tumble out, advice comes in from all sides, and a lot of guys find out that they aren’t as alone as they thought they were. The sessions often last far longer than they were scheduled to.

There are dads’ groups popping up all over the place, and there may be more than one within shouting distance of your home. If you’d rather start your own group, finding other fathers to join may not be easy, but if you put the word out, you’re sure to get some responses. Although I’m tired of hearing the cliché about men not asking for directions, when it comes to parenting, there’s often truth to it. One of the best things about a group is discovering you’re not the only one feeling a little lost. Every dad has some “directions” that may help. And even if they don’t, it’s better to be lost with someone than lost alone.
Entertainment Getting together with other men who’ve made fatherhood a priority can be a lot of fun. It could be in a park with the kids, or it could be a dads-only event at someone’s house or in a bar or restaurant.

La Mesa dad and award-winning
children’s author Minh Lê has released a new picture book titled, The Blur. His latest work brilliantly tugs at that piece of a parent’s heart, which knows—but can’t quite fathom—how fast time goes when raising a child. Layered with meaning, the story follows a child hero whose powers astonish her parents. She can make time race. She can make it stand perfectly still. Anyone with a “superkid” can relate. “My hope is that The Blur appeals to everyone in different ways,” says Lê. “For the youngest readers, there’s the thrill of seeing themselves as a little superhero (‘The Blur’) taking the world by storm. For new parents there’s ‘the
Author Minh Lê blur’ of those early days when life is so hectic and it’s a struggle (albeit a beautiful one) just to keep your heads above water. And then there’s ‘the blur’ as it refers to the passage of time, that universal feeling of time passing by just a little too quickly.” The book is inspired by the author’s own experience with parenthood. Lê and his wife Aimee have two sons, who are 10 and 7. The family enjoys reading together, making music, playing basketball and just snuggling on the couch. Parenting two boys can be frustrating at times,

Anne Malinoski but Lê says he still feels like he’s won front row seats and backstage passes to the best show on earth. And the time is absolutely whizzing by. “At least once or twice a week we’ll be watching our boys playing and just look at each other and say, ‘It’s THE BLUR!’” In college, Lê dreamed of becoming a writer. When people asked, he’d say his goal was to run a small-town library and pen children’s books. But his desire to help children get the best start possible led to another rewarding career. He spent a decade as an early childhood policy analyst, examining issues like childcare for the federal government. But children’s literature was never far from his mind. He started a blog. He reviewed picture books. Finally, it was Aimee who insisted he put his own work out into the world. Six books later, he admits it was a very necessary kick in the pants. “Growing up, I was an intensely shy kid but I loved to read,” says Lê. “Books were my escape from the world. So, it’s somewhat ironic that books have become my way back into the world. Connecting with readers through the pages of a book is absolutely magical to me and I can’t think of a better job.” In addition to writing, Lê continues to work in early childhood policy and soon begins teaching a two-year MFA creative writing program (through Hamline University) that focuses on picture books and graphic novels. Like most modern parents, he and his wife have a lot of plates spinning. Aimee is a human rights advocate and strategist whose work has taken her all over the world. But both try to ensure that each and every choice is made with the family’s best interests in mind. One way they’ve achieved balance is to involve the boys as much as possible in the writing life. The kids come to author talks and book events. They help choose story ideas. Indeed, they are often the inspiration for those ideas. “Being an author feels very much like a family business,” says Lê.

Illustrator Dan Santat When it comes to pursuing creative dreams, Lê advises fellow parents to just go for it. “It’s an incredible gift to your children—for them to see their parents cultivating their own creative interests and following those dreams,” he says. “That sets an example that your children will hopefully carry with them throughout their lives.” The Blur is illustrated by Dan Santat, whose artwork beautifully captures the dizzying pace of life with young children. Santat lives in Pasadena and is dad to two sons, ages 13 and 16. He is a bestselling author and illustrator of over one hundred books—including The Adventures of Beekle: The Unimaginary Friend, which received the Caldecott Medal. Santat is also the creator of the Disney animated hit “The Replacements.” This is the third collaboration for Santat and Lê. Their previous works include Lift and Drawn Together— which won the 2019 Asian/Pacific American Award for Literature. “When I was growing up, there weren’t many books that thoughtfully and accurately captured the nuances of the Asian American experience,” says Lê. “Dan and I both came to the project from a very personal place and we filled the book with our own experiences. Honey bees are our friends because they are precious pollinators; but their populations fluctuate due to environmental and other factors such as habitat loss, pesticides, viruses, parasites and insufficient food supply. About a third of the food consumed by Americans comes from crops pollinated by honey bees, so honey bee health is important! In school, children learn that we are all responsible for the sustainability of the ecosystem and our planet. Kids have the power to raise awareness, to educate others, and to help protect and preserve species. Here are 10 things kids can do right now to support honey bees.
Recognize Appreciate bees while they are at work pollinating. Give them plenty of space and watch to see exactly what they are doing.
Plant Plant native flowers in gardens, public spaces and flower pots. Honey bees are attracted to purple, blue, white and yellow flowers. Herbs, flowering fruit and vegetable plants also nourish honey bees. Plant clover in your lawn and if possible, leave a meadow area of uncut grass in your yard. Honey bees love clover, which produces small white, pink or reddish blooms.

Research Get books about honey bees from the library and do some online research. Study pictures so they recognize the difference between honey bees and other bee species. Look at photos of the inside of honey bee hives to notice the structure, organization and efficiency of bee colonies.
Explore Look for honey bees in your yard, garden, at the park or at camp. Take photos without getting too close. Enlarge them to get a closer look. Print them out and put them in your nature journal.
Support Provide water for honey bees to drink. A shallow plastic dish of water with flat rocks in it will work. Honey bees will stand on the rocks to reach the water. Use a clear or light color bowl to keep the water from overheating.
Raise Awareness Share what you know about honey bees with other children at camp or school. Make a poster, project, or webpage and share it in class or with your scout troop.

Educate Others Make flyers on your computer (or color them with crayons or markers) to spread the word and educate others about what you’ve learned: Why honey bees are good and how to attract and support them.
