Happy Father’s Day, Summer Time and the County Fair!

This month we celebrate fathers and father figures— whether they are close by or far away. Most dads enjoy being involved in their children’s lives. In this issue, on page 14, are ideas on how to celebrate Dad’s Day, which could be done this month or any day throughout the year. Also, take a look at this page and the next for photos of San Diego County dads with their kids.

Summer is a time of fun, whether at camp or during free time. If you haven’t enrolled your children in camps yet, it might not be too late. Check out advertisements in this issue for registration information. But don’t overschedule— allow kids to have free time with grandparents, friends and neighbors. Find great ideas to supplement camp weeks on page 20.

Visit the San Diego County Fair, taking place at Del Mar Fairgrounds from June 12–July 7. It offers fun for the whole family! From hands-on activities to entertaining shows and yummy food, there is something for everyone. Find tips for families visiting the fair on page 22.

Celebrations occur throughout the year. From actionpacked parties to low-key events, we have suggestions for birthdays, end-of-school parties or casual get-togethers on page 16. Hey Kids: Get a Fresh Start at the Library!

The San Diego Public Library (SDPL) is removing barriers to library access with the Fresh Start program, which offers one-time fine forgiveness for youth library accounts. Just in time for summer reading, the program (funded by the Library Foundation SD) erases past debts owed by SDPL cardholders under 18 to reinstate borrowing privileges. The program won’t last forever, so don’t delay in visiting your local library! Read about it at www.sandiego.gov/public-library/freshstart.

New Trails to Explore

- Nature Trail at The Nat. As part of the San Diego Natural History Museum’s 150th anniversary year, they’ve introduced a new immersive garden and ADA-accessible nature trail that circles the museum. The 22,000-square-foot outdoor space introduces visitors to beautiful native plants via pocket gardens such as Pollinator Paradise, Boulder Garden and First Peoples’ Garden. - Oceanside Trail. Cabrillo National Monument has a new trail that allows visitors to hike from the monument down to the popular tidepool area without walking on the road. The steep and narrow trail winds its way through diverse plant life and offers incredible ocean views as hikers make their way down the hillside. There are benches along the way. The trail is not stroller or wheelchair accessible and pets are not permitted. Open from 9 am to 4 pm daily.

Taking a family vacation? If you have little ones who are flying for the first time this summer, consider getting a copy of Daniel’s First Airplane Ride by Haley Hoffman to help ease anxiety and learn what to expect on their exciting new adventure.

I don’t know about you, but when I was a kid, I loved filling out books like My First Positivity Journal: Daily Gratitude and Mindfulness for Kids by Pia Imperial. Designed in an easy-to-understand format, motivational prompts and quotes encourage young readers (ages 8–12) to practice positive thinking, focus on gratitude and record their thoughts and feelings.

With summer solstice on June 20 (the official start of the season and longest day of the year), your family might enjoy reading Summer: A Solstice Story by Kelsey E. Gross. The picture book, beautifully illustrated by Renata Liwska, features a group of forest friends who gather to celebrate the wonder of summertime.

Meaningful Ways to Celebrate Dads and Father Figures

Growing up with a single mom, Father’s Day always felt tricky. I had a relationship with my biological dad, but we were not very close. My mom taught me to honor people who had father-like roles in my life. I’ve been blessed to honor five such men in my life: an uncle, a grandfather, a stepfather (who later adopted me), my father-in-law and my husband (the father of our kids).

As we approach Father’s Day this year, consider recognizing and celebrating all the dads who have contributed to your family’s life. It doesn’t need to be complicated; simple is often better. Below are meaningful ways to honor these special people.

Honoring Dad

The most obvious person to celebrate on Father’s Day is your own father. Consider these ideas:

• Personalized gifts. Give Dad a custom-made gift that reflects his interests and hobbies, engraved with a meaningful message or his initials.

• Cook a favorite meal. Prepare your dad’s favorite meal. It’s a thoughtful way to show how much you care.

• Memory jar. Encourage family members to write their favorite memories or special messages to your dad and place them in a decorative jar. Present it to him as a keepsake.

Celebrating a Grandfather

Grandfathers have a unique role in their grandchildren’s lives. Some are part of daily family life; others live far away, limiting how often you connect. Here are great ways to remind him how much you care:

• Handwritten letter or card. Express gratitude and love for your grandfather in a heartfelt letter or card. Share specific memories or qualities you admire about him.

• Family gathering. Organize a family get-together or a special meal to honor your grandfather. It could be a backyard barbecue, coffee date or dinner at his favorite restaurant.

• Photo album or scrapbook. Create a photo album or scrapbook filled with pictures of your grandfather, family gatherings and memorable moments together.

Showing Appreciation for a Father-Like Relative

Some families have an uncle, godfather or close family friend step into a fatherly role. This could be because a father is absent or simply because they care and want to express love and support. Recognize him on Father’s Day with one of these ideas:

• Gift basket. Put together a gift basket filled with his favorite snacks, drinks, books or hobbies.

• Outdoor adventure. Plan an outdoor activity that your loved one enjoys, such as fishing, hiking or taking a stroll in the park. Spend quality time together in nature.

• Video message. If you cannot be together in person, consider expressing heartfelt appreciation for him in a video message.

Thanking a Mentor

Sometimes kids become so close to a teacher or coach that he is like a father figure. It is thoughtful to recognize him as well.

• Express gratitude. Write a letter or card expressing appreciation for his guidance, encouragement and impact on your child’s life. Share specific examples of how they helped your child grow and develop. Be sure to have the child write something as well.

• Public acknowledgment. If appropriate, acknowledge his contributions and impact in a social media post, blog post, or publicly thank him at an event.

Honoring a Spouse or Partner

There is nothing like watching your significant other become a father. Think about how to make him feel appreciated for all he does and consider ways the kids can express their love.

• Breakfast in bed. Start his day with a special breakfast in bed. Prepare his favorite dishes and include a handwritten note expressing love and appreciation.

• Family outing. Plan a fun family outing or activity he would enjoy, such as a trip to the zoo or favorite museum, an adventurous hike or a beach picnic.

• DIY gifts. Get creative and make homemade gifts with the kids. It could be homemade cards, crafts, or personalized photo albums that capture special family moments. Get great ideas at www.sandiegofamily.com/forthe-kids/crafts-for-kids.

• Family movie night. Set up a movie night at home with delicious snacks and cozy blankets.

• Express appreciation. Throughout the day, verbally express your appreciation for your husband’s role as a father and partner.

Party Time!

Fun ideas for every personality

With birthdays, school promotions, graduations and summer vacation on the horizon, June is a time for celebration. Bounce houses are still popular with the littles, but there are plenty of unique party themes for all ages that appeal to various personality types and interests. Here are party ideas to welcome summer as you plan the next epic kid-centric celebration.

The Adventurer

Children who are naturally energetic or love trying new things are sure to embrace these thrill-seeking activities.

Roller Skating

Let the good times roll with a party reservation or family-fun skating session at Ringer’s (outdoor) Roller Rink near Lemon Grove. Indoor Rock Climbing

Indoor climbing gyms take challenging fun to new heights. San Diego spots such as Vertical Hold and Grotto Climbing have different age requirements, but serve kids as young as 6–8. Parties include gear, staff to guide and teach beginners, and event space for food and gifts.

Axe Throwing

Axe throwing is a thrill for families with kids ages 12 and up. It’s also a great teambuilding activity that helps kids practice aim, burn off steam and encourage each other. San Diego has several indoor/outdoor venues that host axe-throwing parties and ensure proper safety for all.

Escape Rooms

Escape rooms encourage kids to work together as they solve clues to find their way out. Repeat celebrations are fun since many themes are available. Escapology at Belmont Park offers themes such as Scooby-Doo & The Spooky Castle Adventure or The Lost City, while The Escape Game (downtown) offers Gold Rush, Timeliner: Train Through Time and more.

Insider tips:

• If waivers are required, be sure to include with invitations; ask parents to sign in advance to save time and aggravation.

• Ask guests to check in 15 minutes early so the party starts on time.

• Consider party-goer personalities when planning to ensure guests will be comfortable and feel included.

These party ideas may appeal to kids who like a more relaxed atmosphere.

Next Level Gaming Party

Mobile video gaming trucks bring the party to you. Perfect to beat the summertime heat since trucks are equipped with AC. Most also feature music, the latest consoles and multiple copies of popular games so kids can play together.

Movie Magic

Middle schoolers love the freedom of going to the theater with friends. Watch the movie with a parent chaperone, then celebrate with treats from a nearby ice cream shop. UltraStar Cinemas in Mission Valley offers reasonable ticket prices, reserved seating and even a birthday child’s name on the marquee.

Taylor Swift’s Eras movie premiere coincided with my daughter’s birthday last year. We made tacos and bracelets at home, then the girls dressed up and sang at the top of their lungs.

Board Game Bash

For kids who are happy just hanging out with friends, a board game party is a great low-key bash option. Choose a strategy game like Catan or laugh-out-loud games like Telestrations, Herd Mentality or What Do You Meme?

The Budding Philanthropist

Some young people would prefer to use their celebration to bring good to others (versus receiving presents). If this is your child, consider a charitable party themed around a particular passion.

Animal Lovers

- Paityn of San Carlos asked guests to bring items for animals for her 7th and 8th birthdays. “I’ve always been a huge animal fan, so donating to the San Diego Humane Society was the obvious choice,” she says. “I didn’t know if people were going to like the idea, but my friends and their parents really got into it. We ended up with so many donations! After my birthday, we loaded everything into the car and dropped it off at the counter, where you can donate anytime.”

Donations could include cat toys, dog food or items needed for bedding. Check with the organization ahead of time to inquire about most needed items.

- Conservation nonprofit Zovargo brings the “zoo” to you. Choose from a variety of snakes, insects, falcons, bunnies, guinea pigs—even hedgehogs. Zovargo provides safe ways to get hands-on with animals and create memorable photos. Donation ideas: Animal-themed books for a local classroom or homeless shelter.

Slay Crochet

YouTube videos are shaping a new generation of makers. The art of crocheting is making a comeback, and many young people are trying their hand at the craft. Provide guests with plentiful colors of yarn and watch some fun videos to learn a quick crochet project. Donation ideas: Bookmarks with new paperbacks for Meals on Wheels or a local senior center.

“I recommend beginners make bookmarks, dish scrubbers or headbands,” says Samantha, Patrick Henry High School’s Crochet Club founder. “Super easy and fast.”

Sporty Kids

Play basketball (or another favorite sport) followed by pizza and treats at the park. Donation ideas include balls and outdoor equipment for local programs such as Jake’s Projects in Bonita, which provides uniforms, equipment and more to kids in need.

There are endless opportunities to incorporate a child’s interests into a celebration. Whatever you choose, do it together and let your child take the lead in creating some party fun. v

School is Out!

11steps to an awesome summer

Now that school is ending, you may be wondering what the kids are going to do with their time off. With some creativity, there are dozens of local opportunities to keep kids busy without breaking the bank, but be sure to schedule downtime as well.

Register for camps. If you haven’t already, secure summer camps for kids. There’s still time to register!

Spend the week at Grandma’s (or another relative’s house). Every year my sister and I spent a week with our grandparents. Twice we went on vacation with them, but most years we just hung out at their house. We played with our cousins, went shopping, played games and attended local events. It was nice to experience life with my grandparents in charge and it allowed my parents to work without worrying about us.

Attend a local high school program. Most high schools offer sports, music, swimming or science programs and

workshops during the summer, which are typically run by older students and school coaches or teachers. Kids get to feel like “big kids” when they participate in programs on a high school campus. It’s especially fun if they receive a cool t-shirt from the school they’ll attend one day.

Take a family vacation. If budget allows, take a trip with the family— even if it is a San Diego staycation or a weekend away. Find tons of trip ideas (national parks, weekend getaways, camping, road trips, etc.) in the Family Travel section of our website: www.sandiegofamily.com/things-todo/travel.

Vacation Bible School (VBS) is held at many local churches during summer breaks. This is an activity that your kids can participate in from preschool to high school and beyond. It is usually a half-day camp where kids do crafts, sing songs, watch skits and play games based on a bible theme. When kids

outgrow the program, they can return as volunteers. So fun!

Check your local recreation center. The County of San Diego Department of Parks and Recreation offers programs for kids such as sports, cooking, STEM, visual arts and first aid. Create your own week of fun. Work with neighbors or friends to arrange a week of fun backyard activities and local field trips. Parents can pair up and take turns chaperoning the kids at local water parks, summer movies, nature trails, favorite attractions, etc. Alternatively, this could be done once a week throughout the summer—a great way to supplement other plans.

Make time to volunteer. If your kids are middle school age (or older), they can volunteer in a variety of ways. Libraries often need help with summer reading

programs, churches look for VBS helpers, animal shelters need people to entertain cats, food pantries usually need stockers, and senior homes are always happy to see younger faces. Get more ideas at www.sandiegofamily.com/ things-to-do/donations-volunteers-andlocal-fundraisers.

Hire a nanny or parent helper. Nannies are more than toddler caregivers, and are especially helpful to parents who need to work throughout the summer. They can help drive kids to activities, prepare lunch, break up sibling squabbles—even supervise at the pool (bonus if they’re lifeguard certified). Many neighborhood teens and college students look for part-time or full-time summer positions. Ask for references from friends and neighbors or check San Diego nanny and babysitter group pages on Facebook.

Have an unscheduled week (or two). If your summer is busy, be sure to schedule a week of downtime (or one day each week). This is when you do absolutely nothing. Spend this precious time resting, reading, journaling or catching up on your favorite TV series. Too difficult to sit still? Sneak in a neglected project around the house, if you must.

Be sure to keep the week before school starts open for shopping (school supplies and clothes), dentist appointments, annual physicals, etc. Celebrate once you’ve checked all the necessities off the list. v

Woo hoo! San Diego’s favorite fair opens June 12–July 7 (closed Mondays and Tuesdays). Below are tips, deals and discounts to help your family. The trick is to plan ahead! Note: This is not an exhaustive list of deals; visit www.sdfair.com for more.

Fair Tripper Ticket

• Pepsi Pay-One-Price Wristband Days are Wednesdays and Thursdays (except July 4). Wristbands entitle participants to unlimited Fun Zone or Kids Zone rides until 8 pm on one of these designated days. Purchase wristbands by June 11 to save $4 (regular price is $49).
