It’s Dad’s Day, Week, Month!

Dads are so important in the lives of kids. On our street in Serra Mesa, there are many involved dads. It’s great to see them outside playing with the kids and helping raise them. Read “Adventures with Dad” on page 14, demonstrating why fatherhood is so awesome. Interestingly, the theme from many local dads is being outdoors, not on social media or watching TV. We also provide creative ways to celebrate dads on page 18.

If Dad isn’t in the picture, try to have a good role model to influence and mentor the kids. San Diego Family had great mentorship articles in the March and April 2023 issues. If you missed them, access past issues at www.sandiegofamily.com/ magazines/san-diego-family-digital-issues.

We aren’t perfect parents! Parenting doesn’t come with an instruction manual, but we can always learn to be better parents. Sometimes progress comes through trial and error. Remember your kids see you as a model, so try your best. On page 20 are great suggestions and encouragement.

When my kids (Dante and Alicia) were younger, we loved going up to our cabin in Big Bear. They were each allowed to bring a friend. We played games, did puzzles, watched movies, cooked together, went hiking, bowling and boating. So much fun!

I always liked going to the beach with my daughters, Makena and Kiana. Twenty-five years have gone by and Kiana now has two daughters of her own that she enjoys the beach with.

I enjoy seasonal activities with my kids, Ella (5) and Evie (4). We always look forward to blueberry picking in the spring, strawberry picking in the summer and apple picking in the fall.  One of my favorites is going to local water parks and seeing the joy and excitement on my kids’ faces from the simple pleasure of playing in the water during the summer heat!

Some of the ways I like to spend time with my kids is going to the arcade, checking out fun family spots like Medieval Times and making s’mores on our firepit while watching a movie in our backyard, but my most favorite is to go to local parks and just run around with them. Being a dad is the best thing ever and I’m excited to create more memories with my kids, Max (10), Jack (2) and Scarlett (3 mos.). ~

Greg Wells of Tierrasanta has two amazing, resilient, beautiful daughters— Emma (19) and Allison (16)—both of whom have FOXG1 deletions. They are nonverbal, nonambulatory and have seizure disorders. Greg’s favorite way to spend time with his girls is most definitely in the pool.

My favorite ways to spend time with my boys Rocco (6) and Connor (4) is at a restaurant by the water in Ocean Beach, at the little league field or at a Padres game.

Being divorced, I really try to be present with my kids, Madison (8) and Landon (5). I reference San Diego Family Magazine’s calendar for community events—extra points if it’s free!

I try to involve the kids in everything, whether it’s cooking (we recently made our own pizzas at home) or chores (letting them help organize their clothes and toys). I’m a kid at heart, so we often do pretend play, whether it’s with dolls and playsets or variations of popular games.

I think it’s important to have one-on-one time with each child, so I sign up for Chick-fil-A’s annual Daddy-Daughter Date Night. I’m also a “customer” at my daughter’s pretend beauty salon, where she does everything from makeup to nail polish. As I write this, I still have various blue hues on my toes.

My daughter and I love being outside together, whether we’re gardening, hiking, fishing or at the beach— anything outdoors will do because she is adventurous and daring, just like dad! We also enjoy time at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park in Escondido. 10 creative ways to celebrate Dad

Every dad needs reminders of how much he is loved and valued. While you don’t want to forgo handmade cards and the kids’ sweet ideas, these creative ways to celebrate will let Dad know how much you care and provide family fun along the way.

1 Scavenger Hunt: Great for kids of all ages and can be as involved as you want it to be. Come up with fun clues like “As a dad I could not ask for better, your next clue is where you find a letter,” to lead dad around the house to find a Father’s Day prize. Make up your own clues or find a set on Etsy. You’re sure to get giggles from the kids every step of the way.

Older kids may want to expand the hunt to places around town. Give Dad a clue when he arrives at each location, eventually ending up at a favorite restaurant, a baseball game or the San Diego County Fair.

2 Head Down Memory Lane: Every dad can appreciate a trip down memory lane, especially for Father’s

Day. Break out some old photos and create a short movie full of memories. This is the perfect project for tweens and teens. For younger kids, get photos printed and have them create a poster of memories. Give him the chance to tell stories about who he was as a kid.

Finish a Project: Most dads have a project they started and never got around to finishing. Work together to help him finish the project. Whether it’s building the shelves he needs or planting the garden he dreams of, working together makes the project even sweeter.

4 Compete: This can be as crazy as you want it to be. Think outdoor races, a bake-off, a game of basketball or chess. Plan a fun challenge for friendly competition and quality time together.

5 Service with a Smile: We’re not talking about a coupon for help in the yard or washing his car. We’re saying actually do it! Surprise Dad and wash the car inside and out.

Pack his lunch for the next day. Take care of a job he always does so he can put his feet up and relax. Bonus points if you bring him lemonade and cookies.

6 Explore a Favorite Spot: Does Dad love a particular hiking trail or beach? Maybe there’s a bookstore he never has time to meander through or a hardware store he loves. Even a coffee shop that makes his favorite latte. Find a place you know he enjoys and get him there. Suggest he go on his own if he likes time to himself or make it a family affair. No matter how it’s done, make sure it’s one of his favorite places.

7 Discover Something New:

It’s easy to get so caught up in day-today schedules that there’s no time to discover new places. Give Dad the gift of exploration. Make a Summer Bucket List (Dad Edition): Even Dad has a list of things he’d love to do, but sometimes it gets buried under work, baseball practice and goodnight stories. Father’s Day is the perfect time to dust it off. Ask him what he wants to do before summer is over. It can’t be only yardwork or household tasks. Make sure he includes fun outings like going to his favorite ice cream shop, boogie boarding, reading or seeing a movie. Use markers to put the list on a poster or create a shared family list on your phone. The only requirement: Make time for the things on his list! Putting them on the calendar is key to making them happen.

9 Indulge: From sunup to sundown, fill the day with Dad’s favorite foods. Does he love a Caffè Americano and donuts? Maybe a smoothie or protein shake from that place across town? How about sushi, kung pao chicken or a burger and fries for lunch? Whatever it is, the day isn’t about what the kids want; it’s a chance for Dad to enjoy the things he loves without sharing.

Get Away: The fun doesn’t have to last only one day. Get away for an overnight or weekend Dad would love. It doesn’t need to be far or expensive (although that resort or theme park he’s dreamed about is a great idea). What makes him happy? If he loves being outdoors, maybe plan a campout (even in the backyard). Does he appreciate the arts? Plan an overnight to visit an art installation or attend a concert. The best part is the time you’ll have together! v

Not a Perfect Parent? Not a Problem.

How to Raise Emotionally Healthy Kids

Wouldn’t it be wonderful to parent with confidence that our mistakes and imperfections won’t harm our kids? That despite our flaws, they will grow up emotionally healthy and well-balanced? Clearly perfection isn’t possible; we all make mistakes. But mistakes can make parents anxious, and anxiety gets in the way of parenting well.

So how do we make peace with mistakes and parent more confidently? Is it possible for imperfect parents to raise emotionally healthy children?

Nicole Schwarz, LMFT, parent coach and author of It Starts with You: How Imperfect Parents Can Find Calm and Connection with Their Kids, says unequivocally, “Yes! Children don’t need parents who have everything figured out and never make mistakes,” says Schwarz. “Children need parents who are willing and able to look at their own behavior before expecting their kids to manage their big feelings well.”

Here’s how to grow stronger, calmer connections with your kids by making peace with imperfection and learning to manage your own emotional growth and well-being. Own your story. Reflect on your childhood and family of origin for clues. What were the expectations? How was conflict handled? What did you learn about managing emotions?

Family systems that feel normal are not always emotionally healthy. Identify assumptions and beliefs that impact your reactions and

responses. Know your triggers and connect the dots between what you learned as a child and how you’d like to respond as a parent.

As you recognize areas for growth, you are in a better position to form new patterns. “Many of us are learning how to manage emotions well for the first time as adults,” says Schwarz. “It’s OK for this to be a learning process.”

Calm your brain. According to neuroscientist Vilayanur Ramachandran at the University of California San Diego, mirror neurons are brain cells that mimic behavior and feelings we see in others. This is why children mirror the emotional reactivity of their parents. When observing emotions or behaviors of a parent, the same neurons fire in a child’s brain. A parent’s calm presence engages the child’s mirror neurons, helping him to calm down. Tapping into this calming effect can be as simple as taking a moment to pause before reacting.

“Take a few deep breaths or count to 20 in your head,” says Schwarz. “Interrupt your lecture or stop yourself before replying. Repeat a mantra like, ‘This is not an emergency’ or ‘He is having a hard time.’”

Maturity and brain development can’t be rushed— in adults or children. But new neural pathways and connections form each time you practice a new response. Over time, the brain’s elasticity makes it possible for new behaviors to become habits.

Connect with confidence. As you learn to respond to frustrations with greater awareness of triggers and how

to manage them, focus on building stronger connections with your kids. Connections that help them feel secure, seen, known and loved—even when emotions run high.

According to Schwarz, parents can stay connected in difficult moments by using language that models how to handle complicated emotions. Here are a few examples to try:

• “Yes, I am feeling sad right now. We all feel sad sometimes. I know how to help myself feel better. And I am still here to take care of you.”

• “I can feel myself getting angry. I am going to take three deep breaths... OK, I can feel myself calming down.”

• “Oops, I don’t like how I said that. Let me try again.”

Schwarz advises parents to put their phones away and give kids focused attention for a quick connection win. “Without the phone vying for your attention, you may have more time, energy and mental capacity to connect than you think!”

Celebrate progress. Being a calm and connected parent takes time and practice. Keep taking steps to become the healthiest version of yourself possible. Focus on making steady progress and celebrate the wins along the way.

Seek out like-minded parents for accountability—strive for improved emotional health together. If you need additional support, talk to a mental health professional.

Think of caring for your emotional well-being as putting on your oxygen mask before assisting your child with his. It won’t make you a perfect parent, but that’s not what kids need. They need emotionally healthy parents who, despite flaws and setbacks, help kids grow up knowing what it means to be human and how it feels to be secure and deeply loved. v

It’s Time for Summer Camp!

A variety of options for every family

Many kids love going to summer sleepaway camp, which is tons of fun! But sleepover camp may not be the right choice for everyone. Have no fear—there are plenty of camp options that will help children learn, grow, meet new friends and have an epic summer! Read on for ideas.

Traditional Day Camps

Day camp programs vary in length, but are often Monday through Friday, lasting a week at a time. A few programs (such as Outpost Summer Camp) even offer transportation. Activities at traditional day camps vary. They may offer things like swimming, arts and crafts, archery, games and

outdoor activities. Meals may be included or kids may bring their own lunches, which can be great for families concerned about food allergies. Camps meal policies vary, so be sure to ask.

Specialty Programs

Some camp programs offer specialized content and activities, allowing kids to explore a specific topic or interest. These programs may have an all-day schedule or just be a few hours each day. A variety of options include theater, watersports,

music, STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics), visual art, athletics, dance and more. These camps and classes offer great ways for children and teens to learn and connect with other kids who have similar interests. Some kids thrive in specialty programs because they have opportunities to explore topics in depth.

Neighborhood Programs

Local neighborhood resources such as libraries, museums, churches and recreation centers often have a wealth of shorter, more flexible, one-time opportunities for kids over the summer. Possibilities may include summer book clubs (most start June 1), volunteer

opportunities, VBS (Vacation Bible School), writing clubs, park programs, craft time and more. Find SD County library programs at www.sdcl.org and City of San Diego library programs at www.sandiego.gov/public-library.

Family Collaboration

A creative way to foster a week of summer fun with other kids might be in your own backyard. This works when multiple families join forces to create a plan and share responsibilities.

Each family is responsible for a specific day, during which time all the kids involved go to that house and participate in activities (other parents simply drop their kids off and pick them up at the predetermined time). Activities could include playing outside, swimming, crafts, games, science experiments, cooking and more. Consider planning a field trip day with all participating families at the end of the week.

This is a great option for people who have flexibility, but need time during the week to work or run errands. The days you host will be busy, but you’ll have free time on the other days. If you choose to do this, it’s important to collaborate with families who share similar parenting philosophies and to discuss potential safety issues in advance.

Family “Camp”

A fun alternative to a structured program is to assign a certain day (or even a whole week) for your kids to spend with a close family member. Extended family such as grandparents or aunts and uncles often look forward to special time with the kids to go places, bake, play and explore. This is a wonderful way to help children foster relationships with other family members as it provides dedicated oneon-one time.

Mix it up and do a little of everything, if your schedule allows. Decide what works best for your family, and plan an epic summer! v
