March is Upon Us!

Do you need to simplify your family’s life? Are you busy every minute of the day—off to school and work in the morning, extracurriculars in the afternoon, dinner prep in the evening, homework, bedtime routine—only to do it all over again, day after day? See if our article on page 14 helps.

The year has buzzed by and it’s already time to plan spring and summer camps. Give the kids a break from school and screens. Think outside the box and find some neat, interesting camps throughout this issue. Be sure to look at the advertisements in our April and May issues as well. Talk it over with the kids and register before camps and programs fill up.

Kids need trustworthy adults around them. If you don’t already have a handful of adults providing guidance and positive vibes, kids may benefit from having a mentor. Read more about it on page 18. Mentorship programs can really help kids grow into great young adults and outstanding citizens.

March is Irish-American Heritage month. We will be celebrating St. Patrick’s Day on March 17 with corned beef and cabbage. I am ready to make the festive milkshakes on page 38 from local cookbook author, Brianne Grajkowski. Then, I’ll look for a four-leaf clover for good luck!

Spring has arrived and my daffodils are in bloom. They have grown in the same spot ever since we moved into our home in the late 70s—I love that! Find fun ways to usher in spring on page 28.

I’m looking forward to seeing all the wildflowers in bloom this spring—and crossing my fingers for another superbloom as a reward for all the rain we’ve had. I recommend Diamond Valley Lake in Hemet (a two-hour drive from downtown San Diego) for a great spot to see California poppies.

We have loved the tradition of strawberry picking in Carlsbad ever since the kids were small. It’s a fun springtime activity in the San Diego County sunshine! And a delicious and healthy experience that lasts after the day is done.

San Diego Symphony Offers Summer Ambassador Program for High School Students

San Diego Symphony offers a paid summer internship program to San Diego County students ages 15–18 (grades 9–12) for the purpose of building college and career readiness. Help Your Family Thrive

Spring is in the air, and with it comes the satisfaction of a good spring cleaning to freshen up your home and get things back in order. This year, why not apply this springtime ritual to all areas of life? Not just scrubbing corners and cleaning out closets, but evaluating how too much stuff, too many options, and jam-packed schedules might get in the way of your family living a calmer, happier life.

East County parent Jayna Russell is a mom to twin toddlers and a third grader. She finds the pressure to consume and provide unrelenting.

“There’s always something I’m not doing, something I need to buy, some glaring evidence that I’m falling short, and it’s exhausting as a parent.”

In a world that urges parents to do more, buy more and schedule more, there’s good news. You can take a deep

breath and embrace the benefits of simplicity. Because having and doing less – not more – is the key to helping families thrive.

In his best-selling book Simplicity Parenting, author and educator Kim John Payne says, “When you simplify a child’s ‘world,’ you prepare the way for positive change and growth.” Here are practical tips for simplifying life to help your family thrive.

Start by clearing out actual clutter. A streamlined and organized home not only decreases anxiety, but it produces calmness and a sense of well-being that benefits the whole family. “It’s a real pleasure to declutter and to see clear surfaces again,” says Payne. “It’s calming for you and your children to be surrounded with clean lines and a simpler palette rather than a riot of shapes and colors.”

As every parent knows, toys, books and other treasures seem to multiply overnight. That makes tackling the toy box the logical place to start. Keep favorites and toss out anything that’s broken or missing pieces. Donate toys your child has outgrown or no longer plays with. Scale back further by creating a fun toy “library” for kids to rotate items in and out of the play area. Simply store away a couple of bins and switch them periodically.

Clean up chaotic schedules. After streamlining belongings, Payne encourages parents to look at the family calendar. “Just as too many toys may stifle creativity, too many scheduled activities may limit a child’s ability to direct themselves, to fill their own time, to find and follow their own path.”

Think of your family’s schedule less as a calendar to fill and more as a tool to guard your time and guide your days. Leave ample space for play, rest, reading or doing nothing at all. Use mealtimes, bedtimes and other downtime to connect, share joys and challenges, and gauge and manage stress levels.

“Without a ton of stuff weighing us down or schedules packed so tight we can barely breathe, we have space just to be together,” says Russell.

Clear away virtual clutter. Screen time is a fact of life. School work, assignments and communication with others happen electronically. It’s not realistic to set it to zero. But, with so much screen time necessary every day, think of screens such as TV shows and gaming as non-essential. Use them sparingly and ruthlessly eliminate where you can.

Embrace newfound “space.” Once your home feels lighter and your schedule more spacious, don’t rush to fill them up again. Instead, give kids room to play, create and explore. Provide opportunities to practice independence and life skills, but resist the urge to structure or overly direct activities. “Children use and grow their imaginations quite naturally,” says Payne. “They only need time to do so—plenty of open-ended time and mental ease.”

Use your newfound freedom to foster closer bonds with family not just on special occasions, but every day— something the Danish call hygge which loosely translates “to cozy around together.” Authors of The Danish Way of Parenting claim it’s one reason Denmark is known as one of the happiest countries in the world.

Finally, as you shift the focus away from accomplishments and acquiring more things, cultivate your family’s values by caring for one another and those in your world. Notice opportunities to practice empathy, generosity or other values you want your kids to take with them into adulthood. Adopt a simplicity mindset and give your family room to see what blooms.

For Russell, what blooms is something beautiful. “We cook together, draw pictures, take walks and look at the stars,” she says. “Instead of individuals living separate lives under the same roof, we enjoy the pleasure of truly belonging to one another.” v

It Takes a Village

Adult mentors make a lasting impact on kids

Part one of a two-part series. Stay tuned next month to discover the benefits of kids mentoring kids.

The unconditional nurturing and support of parents is crucial to a child’s healthy development. But as children grow into adolescents, they often listen to anyone but parents. Adult mentors can help bridge that gap by offering consistent guidance that opens a larger world for kids, helping them dream big and try new things. Take a look at the lasting benefits mentorship can have.

A Supportive, Listening Ear

A 2022 Stanford Medicine study of the adolescent brain confirms that teens tune out parents as they develop independence, which is one reason strong mentors can be beneficial. Many programs, such as local Boys to Men Mentoring, train adults how to listen actively and effectively support adolescent goals. “Our mentors meet teens where they are and are trained in many things from trust-building and multicultural understanding to leadership skills,” says Boys to Men Cofounder Joe Sigurdson.

Boys to Men supports local teens in 6th–12th grade, especially those who lack a father figure or who may have discipline issues at school. The program, which began with eight mentors and small community meetings, now serves 30 schools in five districts countywide. During weekly meetings, young men reflect on what’s working (and not working) in their lives and develop goals with actionable steps. Mentors share their own journey vulnerably, modeling honest communication and building trust. The program helps teens face day-to-day challenges and supports them to grow into the men they want to become.

“The weekly opportunity to meet in an honest, safe space allows the boys the courage and willingness to step up for themselves,” says Sigurdson. “They create purpose, define their own values and live up to their own expectations.”

Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Diego County

“Bigs” meet with their matched “Littles” (ages 6.5–16) twice a month for fun, tutoring and activities that encourage and build the child’s potential.

Hermanitas Youth Leadership Mentor Program

College students (ages 20+) and professional women guide girls (7th –10th grade) in education, career and personal goals. Mentors help build confidence and communication skills. Apply in spring for the upcoming academic year.

Interested in supporting and encouraging local youth?

Potential mentors must fill out an application, get fingerprinted, have a background check done, interview and attend training. It is required to make a minimum one-year commitment.

Community Support and Life Skills

One of the biggest benefits offered by mentors is real life experience and a broader worldview. To bridge the generation gap, Jennifer Scott, who is a youth director for two churches in East San Diego County, founded Faith in Action for local area teens. The program connects youth with older church members who teach vital skills (such as sewing, woodworking and cooking) that are often cut from school budgets.

“Working together step by step, teens and mentors use their skills for service projects that benefit the larger community,” says Scott. Faith in Action’s first project for 2023 is to create fidget quilts for local Alzheimer’s patients.

It Works Both Ways

Scott reports increased confidence in the youth and elderly as they form a symbiotic relationship. “Mentoring goes both ways,” she says. “Teens teach the older folks skills with cell phones and computers. Older folks are eager to encourage youth by attending sporting events and arts activities, and checking up on homework and grades.” Scott is proud of the program’s lasting bonds that benefit mentors, mentees and the community they serve.

Boys to Men mentors benefit from the program’s extensive opportunities. “Our mentors are able to be the [role models] that they didn’t have in their own youth,” says Sigurdson. “By sharing their experiences, they heal too.”

Supports Jewish children in second grade through high school who are being raised by single parents or grandparents. Meet twice a month for fun activities and community service events.

In a complicated, busy world, parents can’t do it all. Mentorships offer kids a myriad of experiences and opportunities, from exploring careers to networking and outdoor adventures. Boys to Men’s success has garnered strong community sponsorship over 25 years. As a result, the organization offers a wide range of activities beyond meetings, including leadership retreats and weekly summer fun events like hiking, surf lessons, kayaking and catered family movie nights.

Positive Outcomes

Research shows that young people with non-parent mentors benefit academically through better attendance and more positive attitudes. They are also more likely to complete higher education. The social benefits are also significant. Mentorships build confidence and strong relationships, and help teens achieve goals and take on leadership roles, such as becoming future mentors. v

How Camp Helps Kids Connect by Disconnecting

While many of us could benefit from taking a break from technology, this may be especially true for kids and teens.

According to the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP), kids between ages 8–12 now spend an average of 4 to 6 hours each day on screens; among teens, up to nine hours.

Whether browsing social media, playing video games, watching TV or doing schoolwork, technology overuse can have health consequences, including poor sleep, weight gain and vision problems. From a mental

health perspective, stress, anxiety and depression among youth have skyrocketed, particularly since the beginning of the pandemic.

For a much-needed digital detox, consider sending your kids to camp this spring and summer. Most camps enforce “no phones” policies, creating the perfect canvas for some oldfashioned fun. Of course, some kids enjoy attending technology-based camps, which offer their own set of benefits, such as supporting STEM education. If that is what your children

choose, schedule time away from screens when they get home.

Most summer camps provide opportunities to:

Build meaningful relationships. These days, it’s not easy to convince kids to put down digital devices––especially when their peers continue to use them. One of the best things about a camp experience is that everyone is subject to the same rules. Even better, parents aren’t the ones who need to enforce them.

Once unplugged, children encounter valuable opportunities for social development. “We live in such a fastpaced world and taking a break from screens can really help us to slow down,” says Kelly “Aqua” Nelson, a camp director with Girl Scouts San Diego (GSSD). “This is especially important for youth because it allows for face-to-face interaction and builds connections.”

Summer camp provides an excellent forum for making new friends, as well as strengthening prior relationships. For kids who struggle in this area, Sandy “Skipper” Sultz, Outdoor Education Manager with GSSD, provides reassurance: “Camp staff are experts at helping kids make new friends, so there’s a supportive structure for building social skills that may have been set aside during the pandemic or a screen addiction.”

Explore new interests. With so much time spent staring at screens, kids are not in the habit of trying new things in the real world. While at camp, kids can participate in a range of fun activities––going for nature walks, singing around a campfire, learning to surf or swim, navigating a high ropes course and much more. Your camper will almost certainly build self-confidence and may even discover lifelong passions along the way.

If your child is anxious about trying new things, rest assured that camp

counselors are experts at drawing kids out of their comfort zones. “Camp is a place where a kid can be a kid,” says Nelson. “We encourage discovery. Campers are able to try new things in a safe, supportive environment, where it is OK to fail.”

Get outdoors and connect with nature. It’s one thing to look at a screenshot of the great outdoors, and quite another to experience it firsthand. From soft grassy fields and tree-lined trails to sweeping waterfront vistas and bright shooting stars, your camper is sure to gain new perspectives while surrounded by nature’s bounty this summer.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), outdoor play can also lead to improved physical health, better learning outcomes, positive changes in behavior, and lower levels of stress and depression. “Eyes, muscles and cardiovascular systems benefit [when there’s] a break from screens, competition, urgency and inactivity,” Sultz observes.

Although some camps offer sedentary activities (i.e. arts and crafts, cooking), many focus on physical ones such as hiking, swimming, biking and outdoor games—or a combination of both. Some camps are held at parks or playgrounds, allowing for plenty of fresh air and free play. There are also specialized camps like soccer, basketball, dance, gymnastics and

horseback riding that strengthen skills while providing daily exercise. We encourage you to find the right camp fit for your child.

Build better technology habits. This may surprise parents, but research conducted through the American Camp Association (ACA) revealed that many campers prefer a “no phones” policy: “Campers described how because there are no phones allowed at camp, they are able to meet people and interact with them offline, form closer connections with others (including those they know from home), get a much-needed break from the expectations and pressures of social media, and have the opportunity to live in the moment.”

Summer camp can even help kids and teens build better long-term technology habits. After experiencing how much fun life can be without phones, they may be less likely to reach for their devices this fall.

Fun Ways to Usher in Spring

By the time the first day of spring rolls around (March 20), San Diegans are usually ready for a “change in weather.” Let’s face it, a low of 50 degrees is downright freezing in these parts. (Let the rest of the country laugh.) With spring upon us, we get to welcome wildflowers and spend even more time outside than we do in the winter. Hooray for fresh air! Here are great ideas to usher in spring in San Diego.

Make a flower crown or daisy chain.

Watch cloud formations. Take a family bike ride. Blow bubbles. Feed ducks. Have a picnic. Decorate the driveway with sidewalk chalk.

Attend the Cherry Blossom Festival at Japanese Friendship Garden in Balboa Park (March 10, 11, 12).

Launch a spring cleaning “party.”

Buy fresh flowers at a local farmers market. One bunch for your family; one bunch for a neighbor or friend.

Pitch a tent outside to read books or play games that celebrate nature.

Go strawberry picking in Carlsbad.
