Anselmo lost 33 pounds in 3 months, 4 belt loops and even stopped snoring.

Sandy lost 25 pounds in 2 months. She went from a size 14 to a size 10 and kept the weight off for 1 year.

“After being on Dr. Wong’s program for 2 months, I’ve lost almost 40 pounds. I was lethargic and couldn’t keep up with my kids but I’ve found an answer to my energy problems and I wake up with energy, I feel better, I’ve been eating healthier and I’ve been more active. Thank you Dr. Wong!”

“Before I came to see Dr. Wong, I had a lot of health concerns. I had extreme knee pain, I was over-weight and I also had a lack of energy. After I had a consultation with Dr. Wong, he told me what was wrong. Everything we did involved no pain and in 8 weeks, I have lost 32 pounds without doing exercise! I am a lot more energetic and I feel like working out. I am stronger, more alert, more flexible and limber so I appreciate everything about Dr. Wong. If you’re ever in need of optimal health, come see Dr. Wong because he’ll make you strong!”

Our San Diego

Publisher’s Letter

Families

March Brings Us Siblings, Twins, Camps Having siblings is the most fun. The first child is eager to

have a baby brother or sister in the family, even though there may be times when she wants her sibling to go away. On page 18 are the “DOs and Do NOTs” of helping a child adjust to a new baby, from pregnancy through bringing baby home. Take time to enjoy the kids individually. It may be difficult at first, but give the older child(ren) time and attention. As kids get older, try not to compare them. Sometimes it’s hard, especially if they are the same gender. Get ideas on how to find the best in each child on page 24. View the San Diego County twin/siblings photos on our Readers Page and in the three sibling articles. Thanks for sending so many photos in to Family Magazine. Looking for camps for spring and summer breaks? There are many types to choose from — turn to page 26 for ideas. Then check out camp advertisements in this issue (visit www .SanDiegoFamily.com for more information about each one). Take time to explore camps with your kids to determine what they are interested in. Bring on the green food and shamrocks! It’s St. Patrick’s Day on Sunday, March 17. Our staff is celebrating on Monday (the 18th) with green food and corned beef. Maybe we’ll even make leprechaun traps! See our fun craft at www .SanDiegoFamily.com.

Join Family Magazine staff for National Day of Unplugging on March 1 (or any day it works for your family). Take time to disconnect from devices in order to reconnect with loved ones. Stories are better shared not with emojis, but with real laughter, hugs and facial expressions. My family and I unplug for this reason; we certainly don’t want to miss out on those moments. Crystal Grobner, marketing representative We unplug to make eye contact, sing songs, get bored, play the pre-set songs on the piano, build things, talk to ourselves, dance with a broom, bake, clean, play with the dog, run in the yard, pick flowers, ask thought-provoking questions and paint our nails. Michele Hancock, marketing director We love family game night! Our favorite board game right now is Zombicide: Green Horde, which was originally funded through Kickstarter. Our family works together to defeat the ever-growing horde of zombies. It’s a little disturbing, but tons of fun!

Read Across America In honor of beloved children’s author Dr. Seuss, students, educators and families across the country celebrate Read Across America in conjunction with his birthday on March 2. Fun events that celebrate reading, such as Hats Off to Reading Day at the San Diego Children’s Discovery Museum in Escondido, are featured in our calendar. If your child is not an enthusiastic reader, find Tips to Foster a Child’s Love of Reading at www.sandiegofamily.com/ preschooler/tips-to-foster-your-childs-love-of-reading, plus an excellent variety of books at www.sandiegofamily.com/for-thekids/book-multimedia-reviews.

Local kids featured in Family Magazine Thanks to the overwhelming response to our request for photos of San Diego siblings, we were able to feature local kids throughout this issue (and some in last month’s Readers Page). So fun!

Richie Lynn (11) and Johnie Gail (4) of Pacific Beach

We need more photos! In honor of Mother’s Day, we are looking for awesome photos of San Diego moms with their kids for possible publication in our May issue. Please email photos to editor@ sandiegofamily.com. Include names of people in photo, ages of kids and what part of San Diego the family lives in. Please put “moms & kids” in the subject line. Deadline: March 15

STEM-Inspired Books, Games and Activities Looking for fun STEM-inspired activities for your family? In addition to all the awesome events going on around town (see article on page 36 and calendar), there are many ways to engage in science in the comfort of home. National Geographic Kids Little Kids First Big Book of Science (available March 26) is an introduction to the fascinating world of science. The book, which includes activities and simple experiments, inspires kids to ask questions and explore the world around them. Find this and more STEM-inspired books at www.sandiegofamily.com/book-multimediareviews/stem-books-and-products. Build a wand and learn to code with the Harry Potter Kano Coding Kit. Participate in Wizarding World challenges on laptops, tablets and smartphones. For ages 6 & up. Find this and more kid-friendly products that support STEM learning at www .sandiegofamily.com/kidtested-toy-review/stem-toysand-games.

Start Your Engines with School Breakfast National School Breakfast Week (yes, it’s a thing!) is March 4-8. Designed to support schools that offer breakfast to students, it also serves to remind families the importance of starting their day with a healthy breakfast. Some of the benefits include: • Better concentration and memory • Higher achievement in reading and math • Higher scores on standardized tests • More alert • Helps maintain a healthy weight Engage kids with coloring sheets, crossword puzzles and a word search, which can be printed at http://schoolnutrition.org/meetings/events/ nsbw/2019. If the week of March 4 doesn’t work for you, pick anytime — eating a healthy breakfast should be an ongoing goal.

TWIN BONDS BONDS TWIN

Local families share joys and challenges of having multiples

The fascination with twins and multiples is timeless

— especially for people (most of us) who are singletons or parents of singletons (born singly). We reached out to San Diego families with multiples, who were happy to share their experiences, joys, challenges and tips for people who encounter twins while out and about. Some of their input may surprise you!

From Zero to Quads Parents: Isaac and Marcela Morales of Chula Vista Children: Marissa, Isabel, Ivanna and Marcelo, age 7 mos. “There hasn’t been a dull moment since we had quadruplets seven months ago,” says Marcela. “We feel like superheroes raising four babies at the same time. Everyday is like running a marathon, but it also feels like our hearts are going to explode with all the love these babies bring. We love breakfast and dinnertime because they all eat together. Yes, there are challenges: Two arms are not enough to comfort four crying babies (multiples learn to take turns at a very young age) and there are countless sleepless nights, but we put our faith and trust in God daily. We love to encourage couples who are experiencing infertility because we were there once.” Follow the family on Instagram @zero2quads. Alexandra and Julia, age 9 “Our twins are generally inseparable,” says Christine StewartFitzgerald of Carlsbad. “They are like an old married couple, finishing each other’s sentences because they spend so much time together. I’ve come to realize that no one will ever be able to enter their circle. They have friends, but always choose each other over anyone else. They enjoy our Daddy/daughter and Mama/daughter dates, but if there was a boat with two life vests, we have no doubt who they would choose!”

16 • SanDiegofamily.com • March 2019

Lia and Quinn, age 2 “This is my second set of spontaneous (no fertility intervention) twins,” says Lorie Cabuag of Chula Vista. “I was pregnant with twins back to back, but lost the first set. “Having twins was a big adjustment in the beginning. As time went on, I felt like we had a better grasp of how to manage life, but once we overcame hurdles like sleeping, teething and eating solids, there were new challenges. So it hasn’t necessarily gotten easier, we just ‘graduate’ to the next adventure, such as walking and sleep regression.”

Gabriel and Cristian, age 3 Michelle Rosales of Chula Vista says: “After the boys were born, one would cry if his brother wasn’t nearby. They spent time in the NICU and the first day apart was very emotional. As babies, they always hugged each other and never wanted to be separated. Now they get into mischief together. If one is told not to do something, the other gets defensive and stands up for his brother. When one gets hurt, both feel sad and tell me ‘they’ have ouchies.”

DoubleTake Take Double

Kiran and Shanti, age 2 “One of the biggest changes for me was needing and accepting help,” says Colleen Mallen of Serra Mesa. “I have always been very independent, but we had a difficult first year and needed a lot of help. It was hard for me to ask — and hard to accept — but I am a better mom because of it. I enjoy my twins being 2 years old, but look forward to when I can help other people!”

Got multiples? Join a group such as San Diego Parents of Twins Club for support, information and social events for families with multiples. www.sandiegotwinsclub.com

Griffith and Russell, now age 2 “We have ‘IVF twins,’” says Irene Stirling of Torrey Highlands. “It took my husband and me four years to conceive. We were diagnosed with unexplained infertility. After six unsuccessful rounds of IUI (intrauterine insemination), we turned to IVF (in-vitro fertilization). I became pregnant with one baby, but miscarried in the first trimester. We tried a second time and became pregnant with our boys. After years of struggles, we are grateful to be twin parents!”

What are the challenges of parenting twins?

How to Support Twin Families: A note about privacy

In addition to twice the work, purchasing double supplies and getting half the sleep, parents share these difficulties:

We’re all guilty of it: Being genuinely intrigued by an adorable set of multiples and asking questions. But guess what? Dozens of people ask the same questions every day. Imagine being the recipient of such focused attention. “I don’t think people comprehend how many times we are asked the same question when we are out trying to get errands done,” says Stewart. “We try to smile, but it’s hard when you’ve literally heard these a thousand times.” A simple “Do you mind if I ask…” will go a long way with a family of multiples. And please — avoid the temptation to ask invasive questions such as “Are they natural?” or “Were they spontaneous?” Anything regarding weight gain, belly size or method of conception should be completely off limits! If you simply can’t resist the urge to say something, below are alternative ways to ask some of the questions they hear all the time.

The effort and fatigue are exponential. At one point, I estimated that between breastfeeding and pumping, I was doing some kind of feeding 12+ hours per day. - Christine Stewart The newborn stage was a complete blur between sleep deprivation, pumping for two, feeding and changing diapers. It was survival-mode (filled with anxiety) for the first year. - Lorie Cabuag Not being able to soothe two crying babies and the inability to fully bond with one baby because there is another who needs just as much attention. - Haley Tallman Coming up with strategies to manage two children alone. There are activities we don’t even consider because it would be impossible to manage with one set of hands. - Irene Stirling

Know someone who’s expecting multiples? Find expert advice from local twin parents at www.sandiegofamily.com/ parenting/pregnancy.

Twin Perks

What’s unique about the twin bond? How funny each of them thinks the other one is. They always have an audience to laugh at their antics. - Colleen Mallen They talk to each other in their own baby language — it’s so fun to watch. - Miranda Kurtz What’s the best thing about parenting twins? Knocking out two birds with one stone — it’s multitasking at its finest! - Lorie Cabuag Having two little boys fight over who is going to hug me more. It’s the best! - Michelle Rosales The laughing and double snuggles. A lot of people complain about the attention their twins receive when they are out, but I think it’s fun! - Colleen Mallen v Lisa Gipson is San Diego Family Magazine’s managing editor.

Did you know? Having identical twins is not genetic. So, while there may be a history of twins in a family, only fraternal twins have genetic links. Learn more in local podcast, Twin Talks: https://parentsondemand .com/podcasts/twin-talks.

Instead of…

Ask…

Are they twins?

Were they born on the same day?

Are they identical?

Double Trouble!

Your twosome seems to be the same age. Are they fraternal? I’ve always thought having twins would be fun. Am I wrong? Wow — double the fun!

Helping a child transition to the

role of older sibling is exciting and challenging. While adding another child to the family provides kids with a lifelong friend and playmate, the soon-to-be big brother (or sister) may feel reluctant to share his turf. Many parents worry about how their child will react to a new baby and do their best to reassure their big kid that he is an important part of the family. There are additional things parents can do to make the transition easier. Here are dos and don’ts for each stage of adjusting to a new baby.

18 • SanDiegofamily.com • March 2019

During Pregnancy What to expect: Your child may anticipate that a change is coming as he watches you prepare the nursery and get things in order. He may start to act up because he doesn’t understand what’s going on. The idea of a new baby seems abstract. DO: • Put off big changes like potty training or transitioning to a big kid bed. • Get a baby doll for big brother or sister to practice baby care.

• Read books about families who have a new baby. • Answer questions. • Take a siblings class at a local hospital, if offered and age appropriate. • Spend extra time with your child and reassure him that you love him. Do NOT: • Blame your limitations on the baby or pregnancy, which creates negativity associated with the baby. • Promise an instant playmate.

At the Hospital What to expect: When your child visits the hospital, remember this is a new experience – he could be out of sorts. Your child may worry that you are sick since you’re in bed. Some kids will seem aloof — or act up because they are unsure of their surroundings. They may also feel nervous about meeting the baby everyone is excited about.

Did you know? April 10 is National Siblings Day — a day to celebrate brother and sister bonds. Encourage kids to do something special for their siblings, even if it’s just an extra hug, handmade card or thoughtful drawing.

DO: • Greet the older child excitedly. • Make a big deal about the baby and the new big sibling. • Give your “big kid” some undivided attention. • Take lots of photos of sibling moments. • Have items to play with during the visit. Do NOT: • Say anything that will frighten your child with regard to holding the baby. • Let him stay too long. Know your child’s time limitations.

At Home What to expect: It’s normal for a child to feel left out and jealous. He may go out of his way to get extra attention in both a positive and negative way. There will be a variety of emotions as he adjusts: excitement, joy and pride, but also sadness, frustration and jealousy. It takes time.

Bella (2.5) and baby Adelynne (4 mos.) of Clairemont

DO: • Let him help with baby care (bring a diaper to mom, get a clean blanket, sing a song to baby). • Set aside alone time with your big kid. • Communicate that baby loves him and looks up to him. • Have books to read (or other distractions) while you are busy with baby care.

DON’T COMPARE

THE KIDS I have found myself comparing one child to another many times. Even though I know physical, emotional and intellectual developments progress at a rate unique to each child— and that every child has their own strengths and weaknesses—it’s hard not to think “Your sister never did this” when faced with a tantrum over a seemingly trivial issue.

Parents often battle the urge to compare one child to another. It is a natural reaction considering people use comparisons to make decisions involving nearly every aspect of their lives. It’s important to avoid this tendency. “This was hard for me when my son was younger,” says Ashley Clark, mother of two. “He had several developmental delays and I would struggle with comparing him to where his sister was at that age. I knew it wasn’t healthy for any of us and I had to let it go.” Comparing siblings can create jealousy, sibling rivalry, feelings of self-doubt, and have negative effects on parent-child relationships. Each

Identify Strengths When the urge to compare your children arises, identify the strengths of each child. One may have an excellent sense of coordination while another has a knack for listening and showing compassion. Elizabeth DeArmond, mother of four, says, “It helps to see how their differences

help all of us as a whole. We balance each other out.” While noting strengths, acknowledge areas where each child struggles. Be more patient and provide instruction in this area without putting the child down. As your children grow, keep expectations in line with their abilities and interests.

Focus on a Child’s Efforts Instead of comparing one child’s struggles to another child’s successes, focus on each child’s efforts and improvements.

WHAT TYPE OF CAMP WILL YOUR CHILD LIKE? When I was younger, I only had

one choice for summer camp. It was a traditional all-day camp with a heavy emphasis on sports. I was more of a bookworm than an athlete so this type of camp was not a good match for my personality. I remember coming home every day whining to my mom, “It was so hot and all we did was play (fill in a sport). Do I have to go to camp tomorrow?” By the end of summer break, I’m sure my mom wished there were other camp options. Now there are so many choices it can be overwhelming to figure out what types of camps kids will like. The following will help you match your child with camps that inspire her to come home and say, “Camp was so much fun today!”

Traditional Day Camp Traditional day camp offers a variety of activities such as sports, swimming, art, music and often field trips. These camps are located at YMCAs, public schools and private settings. Half-day options may be available. Is day camp a good fit for your child? Most activities are likely outside, so if your child loves the outdoors, team building and group activities, this would be a good option. Traditional camp is also a good fit for children who

26 • SanDiegofamily.com • March 2019

like to do or try different things.

Sports Camp Specialty sports camps usually focus on one sport, such as basketball or soccer, that kids play and receive instruction in for 3– 6 hours. In San Diego there are options for surfing, sailing, gymnastics, tennis, golf, fencing and more. Sports camps are often run by private organizations. Is sports camp a good fit for your child? If your child loves a specific sport and wants to improve skills, this is a great option. It’s also a way for kids to try sports that they might not otherwise have exposure to or time for during the school year.

Art/Musical Theater Camp Art and musical theater camps focus solely on the arts. Musical theater camps typically showcase a production such as “Beauty and the Beast,” whereas in art camp children use a variety of art mediums, such as ceramics, painting and drawing. These camps are usually located at private organizations. Is art or musical theater camp a good fit for your child? If your child is creative and prefers being indoors, then consider these camps. Summer camp is also a great

way to introduce kids to the arts, especially if art programs have been cut from school curriculum.

Educational Camps Kids who attend educational camps learn new skills or subject matter, often through hands-on activities that emphasize fun. These camps can cover anything from STEM and coding to language and SAT Prep. They are typically located at schools, museums, private organizations and colleges (such as iD Tech Camp). Is educational camp a good fit for your child? If your child is curious and always asking questions about how/why things work, this may be a good option. If a child is interested in learning new skills such as media arts or Spanish — or a teen wants to get ahead in required school curriculum — definitely do some research in this category.

Sleepaway Camp Overnight camps offer kids the opportunity to learn independence by being away from home for a week or longer. There are Girl Scout and Boy Scout camps, YMCA camps, church camps and private residential camps. These camps tend to offer options such as sailing, boating, archery, horseback

As kids get older, there are a number of travel opportunities for preteens and teens. Destinations may be domestic (within the U.S.) or international. Not always called “camps”, these travel opportunities can be found through Girl Scouts, schools and private organizations. Is summer travel a good fit for your teen? If your child enjoys discovering new destinations, then this would be a great fit as it will provide the chance to see places you might not have visited as a family. Kids need to have experience (and be comfortable) being away from home and family members.

Where to Find Camps A good place to start is right here in San Diego Family Magazine. Our camp advertisers are anxious to help you plan an epic summer, but get the kids involved! They’re more likely to get excited when they’ve been part of the decision-making process. If an open house is scheduled at a camp you’re considering, visit before signing up. Access our Summer Camp Guide at www.sandiegofamily.com/resources/ summer-camps-and-programs. v Cheryl Maguire is a freelance writer with a Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology. SUMMER CAMP There are many types of summer camps for kids, but few will have campers interacting with rhinos and giraffes, meeting meerkats, or getting up close to cheetahs. Summer Camps at the Zoo and Safari Park are hands-on, join-in, be-a-partof-it fun, with options for kids of all ages. surrounded by more technology than ever, which is great news when it comes to future career opportunities. According to a study from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were nearly 8.6 million STEM jobs in May 2015; seven out of the 10 largest occupations were computer related. With the popularity of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education in school, you might wonder what you can do at home to boost a child’s sense of curiosity and ability to problemsolve. Good news: Parents can plant “STEM seeds” early — and there’s no need to be a math whiz or science buff to explore STEM topics with kids. Here are ideas for all ages:

1

Help build STEM language. Encourage little ones to notice surroundings, ask questions and pay attention to details. Observation is a critical science skill, so challenge your child to think about what she’s doing or seeing in the world around her.

2

Watch fun science videos together on YouTube. Some standouts include NatGeo Kids Cool Science Experiments (www.kids .nationalgeographic.com) and

36 • SanDiegofamily.com • March 2019

Lisa A. Beach Bayer’s Making Science Make Sense videos. Visit www .makingsciencemakesense .com/science-library/answers for videos that give kids the low-down on topics such as What Makes a Curveball Curve?, Why Do Ice Cubes Float?, When Do Fish Sleep? and What Is a Shooting Star?

3

Encourage participation in STEM clubs. Find Lego Builders Clubs at elementary schools and local libraries. Many schools and organizations offer afterschool coding, web development, engineering, and robotics clubs for middle school and high school students. Check out Girls Who Code (www.girlswhocode.com), which offers afterschool and summer programs for girls in grades 3–12.
