MOMS: Time to Make Yourself a Priority
Raising kids is arguably one of the most life-changing and rewarding life events, but it can also be the most exhausting and draining. While moms often put kids’ needs and wants before their own, it’s important to make time for themselves so they can function at their best when taking care of the family.
THE WHY
Mental health is important. Being a mother has its emotional highs and lows. Your body goes through amazing changes both physically and mentally during pregnancy, birth, and the years that follow. Ask your significant other or a trusted friend to help monitor when you are struggling. Ask for help if you are not at your best emotionally. Taking care of a family day-to-day can be draining on emotional reserves, but when you participate in activities that make you feel happy and healthy, it is easier to be attentive and supportive to loved ones.
Physical health is a priority. If you are physically exhausted, it is hard to be patient with kids or productive at home or work. Getting good rest, exercising and eating healthy are important for moms to feel at their best. It’s also important for
moms to prioritize regular visits to the doctor, dentist, and other appointments that maintain health. So often moms delay their own doctor visits to make time for their families, but routine checkups can prevent issues before they arise.
THE HOW
Find your tribe. Having friends who understand what it’s like to raise children, work, handle the ups and downs of marriage, and maintain sanity is critical for moms to feel “normal” and supported. Mom groups such as MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers), neighborhood Facebook groups, mom/baby fitness classes, online meetups, playgroups and faith-based groups are great places to meet and connect with other moms.

Set aside time. Between working, running errands, the kids’ activities, housework and spending quality family time together, it can be difficult to find time for yourself. Spending time alone, with friends, and alone with your spouse are all important to feel energized for another day. Add space in the calendar to ensure these things happen on a regular basis and that childcare needs are met.
Exercise. Exercise not only keeps you healthy and feeling better, but it provides an energy boost for parenting demands. Working out or taking walks also offers alone time to listen to a podcast, audiobook or music. Exercising outside provides an added boost of vitamin D and improves mood.
Treat yourself. Occasionally treating yourself acknowledges that you work hard and deserve something special. You don’t have to spend a lot of time or money—it’s more about putting yourself first on occasion. Some ideas: get your favorite coffee drink, a new outfit, haircut, pedicure or sweet treat.
Talk to someone. Talking to people about feelings and details of everyday life is helpful. If chatting with friends isn’t enough or you’re feeling depressed, it may be beneficial to talk to a counselor for unbiased advice. If you’re not sure where to start, dial 2-1-1 or visit www.211.org.
Ask for help. Some moms have a hard time asking for help. But if a friend asks for help, there is no hesitation to jump in and assist. Give others a chance to support you—or set up a system of helping each other. Arrange a carpool or trade babysitting with a friend. If your significant other offers to help out, let him, even if it isn’t exactly the way you would have done it.
Start a hobby. What do you love to do? Make time for your interests. Rediscover an old hobby or find a new one—reading, running, volunteering, sewing, crafting— whatever activity gets you excited.
It’s not possible for busy moms to put themselves first all the time, but prioritizing time for yourself is crucial for mental and physical health, and will ultimately make you a better mom. v
