Babies, Toddlers and Too Much Added Sugars

Nearly all toddlers and majority of babies eat too much added sugar in US.

Nearly all babies and toddlers in the U.S. consume added sugars in their diet, much of which comes from foods thought to be healthy, like yogurt and even snacks marketed toward babies like puffs, applesauce, and crackers. Early added sugar intake could lead to poor nutrition and health later on in childhood and adolescence.

Consuming added sugars is a risk for infants and toddlers because it can influence their taste and future food preferences. “The consumption of added sugars among children has been associated with negative health conditions such as cavities, asthma, obesity, elevated blood pressure, and altered lipid profiles,” said lead investigator Kirsten Herrick, of the National Institutes of Health. It’s crucial to focus on healthful nutrition in the baby and toddler years as eating patterns early in life strongly shape eating patterns as kids get older.

The 2019 study on added sugar intake for babies and toddlers ages 6-23 months found that for toddlers, most added sugars came from fruit drinks, candy, and sweet baked goods, while sugar intake for babies mostly came from yogurt, snacks marketed toward babies, and sweet bakery goods (Herik et al, 2019).

Foods high in sugar are generally not nutritionally-dense, meaning kids miss out on getting healthy, balanced meals when more calories come from sugar. When choosing snacks for babies and toddlers, it’s important to check labels on packaged foods. Even foods marketed toward babies and toddlers like applesauce, crackers, puree pouches, puffs, and yogurt melts have added sugars.

What’s better than buying packaged snacks? Offer fruit and vegetables. Introducing fruits and veggies early and offering them often can prevent picky eating (or make picky phases shorter), and improve health now and in the future. Instead of reaching for pouches and purees, offering soft, small pieces of fruit and veggies can help babies get used to the taste of fruits and vegetables without them being overpowered by fruit juices, which is common in baby food pouches.

Mother’s Day is a special day that should be celebrated all week or even the entire month. If you need gift ideas, find inspiration on page 18. May Day falls on May 1, reminding us of the arrival of spring. Show appreciation to a family member or friend by giving them a basket of flowers or a small treat. When I was a child, we would drop flowers on a neighbor’s front porch, ring the doorbell, say “Happy May Day!” and hide behind the bushes to see their reaction.

Schools are becoming more creative and thinking outside the box. On page 22, read about Learning Choice Academy, where students learn valuable skills while building a tiny home and selling it. This two-year program, suitable for all students, transforms math, writing and reading skills into engineering, construction, marketing and sales skills. It’s also a fun way to learn how to use tools like hammers, screwdrivers and saws. Who knows, maybe one day these students will build a home for you!

It’s crunch time for choosing summer camps for kids (find them throughout this issue). And check out page 14, where we present an age-appropriate guide to ensure the best summer camp experience. Experiences for young first-time campers are quite different from those of teens, but all are positive. Summer camps provide opportunities for exploring new skills, boosting confidence and promoting team building. They’re a lot of fun for everyone involved!

An age-by-age guide to

the Best Camp Experience

Summer camps offer more than playtime—they offer transformative experiences that shape a child’s growth and independence while building cherished memories. For each age group and stage of development, kids’ experiences at summer camp have different benefits and considerations.

While San Diego County has a plethora of camp options, think about your child’s unique needs, interests and goals. A first grader’s camp experience should look very different from that of a preteen. Take the following into consideration for each age group:

Early Childhood (ages 4-6)

At this age, summer camps focus on encouraging curiosity and fostering skills (social and otherwise) through playful activities. Camps often offer themed weeks—ranging from nature exploration to arts and crafts—where little ones engage in imaginative play, outdoor adventures and storytelling.

These day camps typically prioritize a nurturing environment that introduces teamwork, sharing and cooperation through fun-filled games and activities.

Important considerations:

Comfort and familiarity : Ensure the camp environment is nurturing and familiar, allowing for a smooth transition. Familiar faces or activities help ease separation anxiety.

Safety measures (important at every age and stage): Verify the camp’s safety protocols, especially regarding supervision, allergies and basic medical needs.

Communication: Choose camps that prioritize communication with parents when needed or requested.

Play-based learning : Look for camps that emphasize play-based learning to nurture curiosity and social skills in a fun and engaging way.

Elementary Kids (ages 7-10)

As children step into the elementary years, summer camps offer a broader spectrum of activities. Sports camps are popular, providing fundamental skills training in activities like soccer, basketball, gymnastics or swimming. Adventure camps introduce thrilling experiences that include rock climbing, ziplining and camping, encouraging a sense of courage, confidence and resilience.

Specialized camps also emerge at this age, catering to specific interests such as coding, robotics or theater. Camp is a great way to nurture budding passions and talents or explore new ones. Teambuilding activities and structured games further develop social skills and cooperation among peers as developing relationships becomes more important.

Important considerations:

Interest alignment : At this age, include children in the decisionmaking process and discussion of hobbies/sports they’re interested in or passionate about.

Balanced activities: Seek a balance between structured activities and free time for social interaction and personal exploration.

Friendship opportunities: Ask if the camp facilitates teamwork and bonding among campers through group activities and team sports.

The social component is essential for teens, but it can take on different

Local school helps students build confidence and life skills From Tiny Homes to Big Dreams

Tiny homes may be small, but they have a lot to offer. Not only are they cute, practical and environmentally friendly, these petite residences are also the focus of an award-winning Career Technical Education (CTE) pathway called Energy, Environment & Utilities at The Learning Choice Academy (TLC), a local K–12 public hybrid homeschool. During the innovative two-year program, a team of high school students works with instructors, volunteers and industry professionals to design, develop, construct and sell a modular tiny home. Along the way, students develop an entire toolkit of important life skills.

How the Program Works

During the first year of the twoyear pathway, students enroll in a foundational class called Energy, Environment & Design. Coursework covers topics like solar panels, energy efficient lighting design and sustainable options for utilities (gas, electric and water). Although there are informal opportunities to assist in the build process, most of the initial year is spent on design and planning.

The following year, students take Applied Sustainable Construction and build their planned project. The endresult is a real-life tiny home measuring

20 feet x 8.6 feet. After completion, the house is sold by the students, with proceeds going towards the following year’s project.

The program runs both classes concurrently, so a tiny home is produced each year. It is open to all TLC high school students (as space allows), though is generally taken by juniors and seniors.

Why Students Benefit

Participating students develop a wide range of marketable job skills, including engineering, construction, marketing and sales. According to Kacie Desmond, project manager, “These practical skills enable them to make informed decisions about what they want to pursue after high school, and set them up to succeed with some baseline abilities.”

Students also develop key socialemotional skills, such as confidence, adaptability, communication, leadership and teamwork. “Through completing the project as a team, students see what they are capable of, which promotes their willingness to take risks and think big throughout their lives,” says Desmond.

Kayla, a student participant, especially enjoys the team aspect. “My

favorite part of the day is working with other students on this project,” she says. “It’s really fun to see how we all come together as students in different grades to work on this project.”

Throughout the program, students are exposed to potential career paths through presentations by professional guest speakers — architects, tradespeople, engineers, executives and educators. These impactful encounters can open doors to post-graduation possibilities, inspiring students to pursue a trade or attend college.

Students also gain a better understanding of certain issues facing their community — for example, the need for affordable housing and the importance of sustainability in our changing world.

Another exciting aspect of the program is that 100 percent of participating seniors have graduated. “Students who otherwise struggle in school, either behaviorally or academically, have found a place to shine in this project,” says Desmond. “Doing something with their hands, of real-world importance, and being part of a team, has shown to be very effective for many students who may otherwise be hard to reach in traditional learning environments.”

What Else to Know

Since the tiny home program’s inception in 2019, over 100 TLC students have participated. The recently expanded program is now available at two TLC sites (Chula Vista and La Mesa), with the goal of building two tiny homes each year. There are 50 students currently enrolled, with two dedicated teachers, Travis Nixon and Jason Foyer, offering guidance and expertise.

“Mr. Nixon and Mr. Foyer taught us that the strength of our team was each individual member but the strength of each member was our team,” says Isabelle, a former participant. “We tried our best to value each person’s abilities and learn from them.”

With May being Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, families across the nation will be celebrating the rich cultural tapestry of the AAPI community. One way to participate with your family is to learn about dim sum, which not only offers a culinary experience, but a journey into the heart of Asian culture and community.

First, what is dim sum? Dim sum is a cherished tradition in Cantonese cuisine, consisting of foods served on small plates. In translation, dim sum means touch the heart. Here are some of my favorite ways to dive in to dim sum culture.

Have a family feast. Gather loved ones for a delightful dim sum feast at a local restaurant or eat a dim sum meal at home by trying a variety of pre-made foods and frozen dumplings from your neighborhood Asian market. Learn about dim sum culture. Educate your family about the rich history and cultural significance of dim sum. Share stories about its origins in tea houses, the etiquette of sharing dishes, and the symbolism behind popular dim sum foods.

Read picture books about AAPI culture, or written by an AAPI author. Take time to learn about different cultures together. Exploring traditions, cuisines or fun facts is a memorable, fun and educational experience. Consider reading these picture books with your kids: Asian Adventures A–Z or Asian Adventures Delicious Foods A-Z.

Celebrate AAPI Heritage Month with Dim Sum

Support an AAPI small business, store or restaurant. Enjoy a meal at a local AAPI-owned restaurant and try Asian foods that are new to your family.

Har Gow -- dumplings with shrimp and sweet bamboo shoots

Shumai -- open dumplings stuffed with garlic, ginger, shrimp and pork

Char Siu Bao -- barbecue pork buns. Usually the bun is steamed, but there are baked bun versions as well.

Fun fact: It’s traditional to drink tea from tiny cups (which requires lots of refilling) with dim sum. Since there is so much chatting during this communal dining experience, it’s customary to express gratitude to someone refilling your tea by tapping two fingers near the cup so there’s no need to pause the conversation.
