Publisher’s Letter

Navigating the Disruption Welcome to the first digital-only edition

of San Diego Family Magazine. As I write this, we are still under social distancing orders and wearing masks. It’s been an adventure. We are all ready to get back to normal routines.

Besides being the publisher of SDFM, I am a San Diego Downtown Breakfast Rotary member. Marta Knight, the Rotary District Governor, came up with the words below for the acronym FEAR, which is an appropriate message for our readers. I have added to it. When FEAR comes into your mind, turn it into a positive:

F

Family - Togetherness is good; life has slowed down, we have time

to watch the kids grow.

Our San Diego

Families

What’s one thing you cannot WAIT to do once the quarantine is lifted? Lisa Gipson, managing editor I can’t wait to hug my girlfriends, get back to church, hang out at the coast and go on a date with my husband.

Flexible - we have had to be; our routine has not been the same. Exercise - Walk the neighborhood or participate in a video with

E

an exercise guru. Physically playing with kids provides upper body strengthening.

A

Education - Parents have always been kids’ first educators and that’s never been more important than now. Hang in there! Keep communication open with teachers and school staff.

Attitude - I must admit, it’s hard to see smiles behind masks, but

R

it helps to find the positive happenings all around us. Take time to smell the roses. Activity - Find fun things to do without social media, such as hobby and craft time. Many organizations have free apps with fun activities.

Adrienne Sigeti, editorial assistant I can’t wait for baseball season to come back! I’ve been going to Padres games every season since I can remember. I miss those warm spring and summer nights cheering on the Pads with family and friends.

Reassurance - We are in this together. It might take a little time,

but we will come out stronger.

Reading - Take time to read a book you’ve always wanted to read. Read this issue of San Diego Family and be sure to thank our advertisers.

Stay connected with us by visiting www.SanDiegoFamily.com. Sign up for our eNewsletter to have STEM activities, art projects and helpful parenting articles sent to you directly. Tell your friends to sign up too. Thanks for being a loyal follower of San Diego Family. Stay healthy! When this is over, I’m going to hug my kids and grandkids, socialize with friends and go to Rotary every Wednesday.

Discover the Importance of Leadership Skills Now more than ever, we’re seeing that individuals who possess leadership skills tend to be more successful in overcoming adverse circumstances. It’s important to teach our kids to be leaders, as there are benefits in all aspects of life –– including academics, career, personal relationships, and even self-esteem. While some people appear to be natural-born leaders, you may be surprised to learn that the majority of successful leaders take intentional measures to develop these important skills. This is great news since it means everyone has leadership potential. Kids and teens possessing leadership traits have more opportunities to make a positive impact on the community and people around them. Effective skills of a leader include the ability to: • Think strategically • Communicate well with others • Show discipline and self-control • Give (and receive) constructive feedback • Inspire and mentor others • Demonstrate courage and confidence • Be compassionate towards others • Overcome challenges Summer is the perfect time to work on developing these skills and participation in a teen leadership program is an excellent way to learn responsibility, explore real world job skills, build an impressive resume, and add substance to future college applications. Here are some popular local programs (Be sure to check with each to find out what accommodations and/or modifications are being made to programs in light of COVID-19):

Boy Scouts of America Boy Scouts of America offers weeklong, aquatic-focused summer resident camp experiences at Camp Fiesta Island on beautiful Mission Bay. Their Counselor in Training (CIT) Program provides a unique opportunity for Scouts and venturers, ages 14 and 15, to develop leadership skills while also having fun, making new friends, earning merit badges, and meeting Ranger requirements. Girl Scouts “The whole philosophy of Girl Scouts is to learn-by-doing through progression,” says Lisa Gipson, a Girl Scout leader for 20 years and mom of three daughters. “Girls learn age-appropriate ways to lead at every level. So, while kindergarteners participate in decision-making, fifth graders teach younger scouts, middle schoolers plan events, and high schoolers discover their entrepreneurial spirit. All grades participate in community service. It’s awesome!” Girl Scouts also provides summer leadership training sessions and hands-on opportunities for teens. Girls do not have to be in a troop to participate. Starting in seventh grade, Day Camp Aids (DCAs) can learn important life skills from Counselorsin-Training (CITs) and staff while helping campers with crafts, games, songs, and other tasks. Beginning in ninth grade, CITs can mentor DCAs and campers while taking on additional leadership roles. To learn more, see www.sdgirlscouts.org/en/ camp/ways-to-camp/day-camps/ teen-mentoring.html.

YMCA of San Diego County Leadership opportunities abound within the YMCA’s wide range of summer camp programs. Teens can choose from daytime or overnight camps to learn essential leadership skills –– then develop hands-on job experience as Leaders in Training (LIT) or Camp Assistants (CA). If your teen loves mentoring younger kids, this is a great way to spend the summer! YMCA programs also serve as a place to fulfill community service hours required for school. To explore leadership day camp options, visit www.ymcasd.org/ program-finder/program/daycamp-24. For more information on overnight camps, go to www.ymcasd. org/camps/camp-marston/summercamp-marston/teen-leadershipcamp-marston.

Junior Achievement (JA) of San Diego County

Develop Leadership Skills with National Charity League (NCL) San Diego If you’re looking to foster motherdaughter relationships while helping your young teenage girl develop leadership skills, you might be interested in National Charity League of San Diego. This philanthropic program –– spanning all year long –– is committed to promoting the values of community service, leadership development and cultural experiences. Mother-daughter teams typically make a six-year commitment, from 7th to 12th grade, to do a certain amount of community service each year at pre-approved organizations. Often, duos meet up with others from their chapter to volunteer and, on occasion, to participate in fun activities together. Participants also have opportunities to meet people from other chapters when participating in larger-scale volunteer events. Throughout the NCL experience, girls are encouraged to become class officers and hold traditional leadership roles. Similar expectations are placed on involved mothers. Most importantly, this life-changing program carves out quality time to spend together, make friends, and ultimately learn the value of giving back to the community. To learn more about this multi-year program and to find a chapter near you, visit www.nationalcharityleague.org.

Junior Achievement’s mission is to inspire and prepare young people to succeed in a global economy. Weeklong summer day camps are available at their facilities near Allied Gardens for middle school and upper elementary school kids. Sixth through eighth grade campers can discover leadership potential at Mission Fed JA Finance Park while having fun, making friends, exploring careers, and discovering ways to help them succeed in their bright futures. For students entering fourth through sixth grades, JA BizTown offers opportunities to explore job skills, build a resume, experience job interviews, and form a business plan –– all while having the time of their lives. To learn more about JA’s summer camps and year-round programs, visit https://sandiego.ja.org.

Camp Challenge at Army & Navy Academy Camp Challenge participants learn leadership skills through hands-on experiences and interactive classes, while exploring how to make valuable contributions to their families, teams and communities. Two-week Leadership Education and Training (LET) sessions for high school students showcase the values of honor, integrity, respect, responsibility, compassion and gratitude. Middle school campers can participate in Leadership Development Programs. All participants will love the gorgeous, oceanfront campus in Carlsbad. Prospective high school campers can learn more at www.armyandnavyacademy.org/ summer-programs/high-school. Potential middle school campers can visit www.armyandnavyacademy.org/ summer-programs/middle-school. v Lisa Pawlak is an award-winning contributing writer and local mom of two boys.

MOMpreneurs Mom-led businesses

are working hard to serve the community and keep business going during this time of crisis. Included in our impressive 2020 lineup are moms who launched brands after the birth of a baby, after children left for college and at every stage of parenthood in between. As we celebrate Mother’s Day, draw inspiration from these awesome women and be sure to check out their products and services. There has never been a better time to support small businesses!

Claudia Rodriguez-Biezunski Sew Loka

Claudia Rodriguez-Biezunski’s daughter was only six months old when she and husband Manny opened a sewing studio in heart of the Barrio Logan Arts District. “We feel incredibly grateful to live and work in such a vibrant and active community,” she says. Sew Loka specializes in cosplay and custom sewing projects. It’s a true family operation, where mom, dad and 7-year-old Rose exchange creative ideas. The team’s eye-catching designs earned them a spot in Facebook’s recent “Keep It Local” marketing campaign. Facebook paid for the small business to be advertised on billboards, buses and trolleys throughout the San Diego area—an experience the team describes as “incredibly surreal.” As a small business owner, Rodriguez-Biezunski strives to build a relationship with her customers. “People seek me out for my skills, but they come back for the riveting conversation,” she says. A proud child of hardworking immigrants, Rodriguez-Biezunski was born for entrepreneurship. “My mother’s grit and work ethic are a daily reminder to me that I should never stop hustling or allow negativity to slow me down,” she says. Follow Sew Loka on Instagram @sewloka and visit at www.sewloka.com.

How has COVID-19 impacted the way you’re doing business? In a moment’s notice, most of our appointments were cancelled. Instead of wallowing in fear, our small group of seamstresses has created over 4,500 cotton face masks for the local community. People have dropped off produce and sewing supplies in appreciation. We’re all in this together! – Claudia

Monica Maccioni Bobboi Natural Gelato

“The founding philosophy of our business was to make something that elicits happiness in our customers,” says Monica Maccioni of Bobboi Natural Gelato. “We simply want to make people happy.” (For what it’s worth, Bobboi’s vegan pistachio gelato makes me — the writer of this article — very, very happy.) Serving both traditional and not-so-traditional flavors, Bobboi is inspired by California, yet rooted in the timeless gelato techniques of Maccioni’s native Italy. Recipes favor local ingredients and the menu rotates seasonally. The concept was born when Maccioni and her husband Andrea became empty nesters. The couple’s two sons left for college, leaving mom and dad to chase their wildest dream. “I attended courses at the Gelato University in Bologna and private courses with Maestro Giampaolo Valli, a gelato guru,” says Maccioni, who previously worked for two decades as a lighting designer. “I learned the time-tested techniques behind gelato, then we forged our own path.” The couple moved from Italy to California in 2014 and opened a scoop shop in La Jolla. They have since added two locations in Little Italy. Classic flavors include pistachio, stracciatella and dark chocolate sorbet. For something a little more unusual try Matchatella—made with Japanese matcha tea and chocolate shards. Gluten and dairy-free flavors are available. North County mom of four Marissa Kovach began selling handmade leather goods for children soon after the birth of her first child. “That same year,” she says, “my husband surprised me with a leather wallet and purse that he learned how to make watching videos online.” Since then, the couple has worked together to design and sell a stunning selection of quality leather goods for children, adults and the home. Their brand, Cage and Lantern, has served as both a business and creative outlet for Kovach, who worked for years to master the carving and stamping techniques that make her products stand out. Last Fall the Kovachs were invited to create a leather mural at the Flower Hill Promenade in Del Mar. Alex Rhett

Sandcastle Tales Bookstore Alex Rhett of Del Mar dreamed of owning a business that would serve the community while celebrating her family’s love of literature. Last summer that dream came true when Rhett and her husband of 17 years opened Sandcastle Tales, a boutique children’s bookstore in the heart of their hometown. The shop is dedicated to fostering memorable experiences for parents and their kids. In addition to a thoughtfully curated selection of books, toys and gifts, Sandcastle Tales offers crafts and author events for families to enjoy together. According to Rhett, the road to entrepreneurship wasn’t always smooth. She says she carved out work time in the late evenings and early mornings in order to launch the store while raising three children ages 11, 7 and 4. “My advice to other moms looking to become business owners is to take it one step at time, using whatever little windows of opportunity you have,” she says. Visit Sandcastle Tales at www.sandcastletales.com and follow on Facebook and Instagram @SandcastleTales.

How can people support you during your bookstore closure? We have great children’s books, crafts, toys and kits for children learning at home, so please call, email or place an online order for pick-up or local delivery. Also, consider purchasing e-gift cards to donate to families in need. – Alex

We ripple love from the inside out.” As an author and songwriter, Cloward works to share meaningful life lessons in a voice that captivates children with its authenticity. In 2019 she released her seven-book Kathryn the Grape Affirmation Series along with a 10-book Kathryn the Grape Let’s Read Together Series for younger kids. Apricot Yarn & Supply

Lynn Ell Tilker b.bot

How has COVID-19 impacted the way you’re doing business? I am lucky to already have my product available in a digital platform. I would like to offer my support to families who need potty training coaching. I am available to provide suggestions, creative ideas or just be a sounding board. – Lynn

Lynn Ell Tilker’s award-winning app started as a hobby. The Del Mar mom wanted to develop a better approach to potty training that would reduce parental stress and get kids out of diapers sooner. The b.bot app caters to youngsters ages 2–5. Guided by a friendly robot, users enjoy fun activities and engaging music as they work to develop ageappropriate developmental skills—beginning with potty training. The game uses thoughtfully designed rewards and repetition to help kids recognize and act on the body’s cues. “b.bot will be there every step of the way, encouraging kids with positive reinforcement, graphic rewards, and a special song,” says Tilker. The b.bot app won the 2019 Baby Maternity Magazine Top Choice of the Year Award and the app’s lovable robot character is now being developed for a TV show. Tilker is a single mom to 11-year-old Harper, who was adopted before birth. “We have a very small family, but we have created our own version of family with some very good friends,” says Tilker. While she admits that there were some setbacks on the road to business success, Tilker insists that missteps are important. “Failures are good, it keeps us always improving and redirecting to the right path,” she says. “Have trust in the reason it happens and never let it defeat you.” To learn more, visit www.bbotworld.com and follow on Facebook and Instagram @bbotworld.

Fiber enthusiasts adore Apricot Yarn & Supply for its carefully selected yarns from around the world. The shop offers top quality supplies for knitting, crochet and weaving. It’s the perfect place for yarn lovers to discover something different or expand their skills with a hands-on class. Owner Sara Heckman runs the shop with help from her husband Nate and their three daughters (17, 14 and 10) who are all excellent knitters. Years ago, Heckman was inspired by a lovely visit to a yarn and antiques shop in New Jersey. “I thought it was a wonderful combination, the shop owner was kind and amazing,” she says. “It made me realize that owning a yarn shop was something I would love to do.” And she’s doing it well! Apricot Yarn & Supply has been recognized as a Gold Specialty Store by The Peninsula Beacon two years in a row. “Being a mom and running your own business is a big job,” says the Point Loma native. “I could not do it without help from my husband and my employees. What’s something you cannot WAIT to do once the quarantine is lifted?

Local parents share what they’re looking forward to most when we no longer need to shelter in place.

Jenny Rose, Oceanside. The beach for sure! But since we are fairly new to the area, we are excited to get out and explore. Hiking, beach, zoo, gardens, parks and restaurants.

Alyssa Navapanich, Rancho Peñasquitos. Hiking Black Mountain and PQ Canyon, and camping at Anza-Borrego Desert State Park!

Tricia Bacerra, Chula Vista. The kids miss their teachers, cousins, friends -- even dining out at restaurants. The other day they made their own restaurant in the living room using stuffed animals, and made a parking lot for all their guests.

Cristal Carrillo, Imperial Beach. We can’t wait to spend time outdoors and feel free again, make more family memories, and celebrate my son’s 10th birthday. We had a party planned, but had to postpone it. We miss our family and friends!

What’s something you cannot WAIT to do once the quarantine is lifted? (continued form p. 26) Kristin McCardle, Point Loma. Walk around the zoo and Safari Park! Had baby #2 on March 13 and my recovery plan included taking walks around the zoo with my kiddos. Hoping we can do that this summer still! Susan May, Rancho Peñasquitos. Work out at the YMCA! I never went when they were open, so I’m motivated now that they are closed. Go figure.

Kira McAnally, San Marcos. We miss Legoland and the Safari Park so much! We can’t wait to see all the animals, but we’re grateful for all the Zoo social media.

Casey Chan, La Mesa. Watch my son play for Rolando Little League!

Megham Cramer, Alpine. We miss walking around Balboa Park and museums, taking our dog to the beach, sitting down at favorite restaurants, camping and fishing at Lake Cuyamaca, going to church and our American Heritage Girls group, and seeing grandparents. We are enjoying this time together as a family and know these activities will return. We love San Diego!

Michele Hancock, Scripps Ranch. We can’t wait to visit our favorite hangout spots like Bird Rock Coffee in La Jolla, Coronado Beach and UltraStar Cinemas!

Anna Valdez, Barrio Logan. Walk my children into school. I have a senior who will miss the whole graduation experience. My 6-year-old told me [at-home learning] was fake school. He wants to go back to “real school”! Jusmin Whitten, Escondido. Hug my mom and mother-in-law. This is the hardest thing because we are huggers. I have an autistic 7-yearold son who misses playing with his grandmas. My 5-year-old son is scared and sad he can’t play with his friends. Dana Abernethy, Serra Mesa. Take my kids to the playground. We can see it out our front window, but can’t touch it. Such a tease! Jo Sands, Jamul. There are so many things I want to do! I think the biggest is just being able to give someone a hug or handshake. Elizabeth Fisher, Pacific Beach. I can’t wait for my son’s sailing classes to start up again at Mission Bay Yacht Club! Our family would meet up to watch him learn to sail. It was a wonderful beginning to our weekend. Molly Turner, San Marcos. Hug people other than my immediate family, watch our kiddos play all the sports they love, introduce our newest baby (born during all this!) in person to friends and family and go to the beach! Starr Ochoa, Santee. My son (a seventh grader) just wants to go back to school! Christina Danley, Clairemont. We can’t wait to go to the beach and surf, and then head out for sushi!

Amanda Johnson, Oceanside. I can’t wait to get away and take a little vacation!

15 Ways

Stay-at-Home Moms

Can Earn Money

There are now more stay-at-home

moms than ever. And feelings of isolation have set in. Perhaps you were already thinking about ways to earn income to help pay for summer camp, sports, college expenses or other things. Now you may be desperate to help pay monthly bills and interact with other professionals. So, what to do? There are opportunities to earn income, have much-needed flexibility, and reap the benefits of socializing with others (even if it’s only virtually). Here are ways to work part-time while remaining a stayat-home parent.

Customer Service Representative My friend provides customer service from her house through Liveops. She creates her own flexible schedule by signing up for time blocks. She started by taking calls for infomercials, then processed auto claims for Allstate and

30 • SanDiegofamily.com • May 2020

took orders for Pizza Hut. The only cost to her is a dedicated phone line. Learn more at https://join.liveops.com/workfrom-home-call-center-jobs/.

Delivery Person You may already know someone who is an Amazon delivery person through Amazon Flex. Drivers must use their own car and an app to select a block of time to deliver packages. Rates vary by region and time of year. https://flex.amazon.com/

Etsy Shop Owner Set up your own online store on Etsy. Most people sell handmade crafts, jewelry, and other items, but there are also shops that sell clothing, home décor, vintage items and more. I bought a custom logo from a graphic designer for my website on Etsy!

Online Transcriptionist There are several companies that hire people to work from home transcribing audio speech to written documents. The audio could be from a doctor, lawyer, court hearing or freelance writer. Some companies don’t require any experience. There are transcription courses available for a fee. Transcription companies include: Rev (www.rev.com/freelancers/ transcription) Scribie (https://scribie.com) CrowdSurf (http://crowdsurfwork.com/ get-started-on-work-market)

Paid Focus Group Participant Market research companies pay focus groups for their opinions of products. Group members usually participate for one to two hours. To participate, sign up with companies such as WatchLab (www.watchlab.com/) or FocusGroup (www.focusgroup.com).

Pet Sitter My friend started a pet-sitting business to board dogs in her house five years ago. She used the website Rover (not

limited to dogs) to set up her rate and availability. In addition to boarding pets, people can walk dogs or watch pets at an owner’s house. Learn more at www.rover.com.

Fashion Stylist Stitch Fix is a clothing subscription service. Stylists work from home and help other people create stylish outfits based on budget, personality and fashion tastes. The job requires an onsite six-hour training course and working 15–30 hours per week. www.stitchfix.com/careers/styling

Teach English There are a few different companies through which people can teach English online from home. Most require a college degree and proficiency in the English language. Some companies to investigate are VIP KID (www.vipkid.com/teach/) and Qkids (https://teacher.qkids.net/).

Test Websites and Apps Userlytics connects people with an app or website that is in the developmental phase and wants user feedback before it is launched. Participants offer thoughts and feedback about the app or website by answering questions. Most projects take 15-20 minutes. www.userlytics.com/tester-signup

Fitness Instructor (online or outdoors with social distancing) A few of my friends are fitness instructors, such as spin, body pump or TRX teachers. These jobs require certification tests that cost around $300 (recertification every two years is about $100). My friends enjoy the flexibility of the job and that they get paid to work out. Many gyms offer free membership to their instructors and some even offer free childcare while teaching.

Tutor (online only for now) According to Tutors.com, anyone with a high school diploma or GED can become a tutor; the only requirement: complete a tutor training program. Once certified, set up a free profile

at Tutors.com to find jobs. https:// tutors.com/pro/how-to-become-a-tutor

Once the Quarantine is Lifted Once the quarantine is lifted and people can be around each other again, here are additional ways to earn extra income.

Rent Your House for a Movie Set List your house on San Diego Locations and Set Scouter to rent it out for movies or TV shows. People’s homes nowhere near Hollywood have been used to film various scenes—some indoors and some outdoors. You never know when Hollywood might come knocking! Visit www.sandiegolocations.com and www.setscouter.com.

Babysitter or Nanny Some parents take care of other kids while watching their own. If you are unable to find a job through friends and family, try looking on websites such as Sittercity, Care.com, or UrbanSitter.

Tasker TaskRabbit matches people with those who need tasks done around their houses such as cleaning, moving, furniture assembly or home improvement. Learn more at www.taskrabbit.com/become-a-tasker.

Referee or Umpire Many youth sports leagues need qualified people to officiate games: soccer, softball and baseball, lacrosse, field hockey and more. Referees need to attend certification training and complete a background check. Contact local sports leagues for requirements. Most people won’t get rich doing these jobs, but it will be empowering to earn some extra income. Of course, you never know where your side business may lead you one day. A mom can dream, right? v Cheryl Maguire holds a Master of Counseling Psychology degree. She is married and a mother of twins and a daughter. May 2020 • SanDiegofamily.com •

Parenting with Purpose

HELP for

Class of

2020

PARENTS

High school seniors and their

parents face an especially difficult reality as schools across the country are shut down in response to COVID-19. With each passing week, the loss of highly anticipated milestones mounts. Senior trips, prom, spring sports, awards banquets and graduation ceremonies canceled or postponed with no clear alternative plans. Even the possibility of seeing friends on campus one last time fades as uncertainty about health and safety increases. Here are ways parents and Class of 2020 seniors can work together to process feelings and gain fresh perspective while waiting out this quarantine:

Validate feelings. Practice compassion by listening to high school seniors and acknowledging their feelings. They may express everything from anger and frustration to relief and joy. Let them know you share their jumbled emotions about this confusing time and will help however you can. At the same time, be sensitive about how your own feelings impact your senior. For example, you might feel extreme disappointment over a canceled event, but your senior seems unfazed. Or your student is heartbroken over a lost moment, but you’re wondering what all the fuss is about. It’s OK to feel differently from one another in this uncharted territory. Listen with compassion without stirring up more disappointment or discounting sadness. Expect differences in perspective. From life experience, adults know that disappointment and loss can be dealt with and overcome. While things don’t always turn out the way we hope, difficult seasons don’t ruin life. For most high school seniors, perspective hasn’t had time to grow in their 17 or 18 years. That’s what makes losing what many consider the crowning moments and rewards of the last 13 years particularly painful. “The narrow focus of teens is absolutely normal,” says Erica Rood, founder of Inspire Balance Life Coaching for Parents, Teens, and Young Adults. “Parents can help by reminding teens there are still meaningful

36 • SanDiegofamily.com • May 2020

experiences to look forward to. Yes, this is extremely disappointing. But there are other bright lights ahead.” Talk it out. Make every effort to communicate. Let your senior know that it’s natural for feelings to change from day to day as more information becomes available, and that talking about it helps. Stay open to difficult conversations that include a lot of “I don’t know” answers. Ask open-ended questions like, “What are you missing most?” Don’t feel like you need to have answers when none of us do. Your availability to listen is what matters right now—and it’s what your senior will remember. Note: If your teen is reluctant to talk to you, encourage him to express himself in other ways, such as journaling or talking to other trusted adults. Speak to the future. If seniors must give up traditional rites of passage, honor what might feel like an abrupt entry into adulthood. Speak with respect and kindness, not only to who they are in this final semester of high school, but also to who they are becoming. Praise the ways your senior handles himself with maturity and poise and point out the courage it takes to let go and move forward. This is an opportunity to start relating to your senior as a young adult. Allow appropriate amounts of privacy and time alone and encourage your senior to stay connected to friends.

Follow your senior’s lead. When asked the best way for parents to help their seniors navigate this uncertain time, Naomi Gipson, a senior at Westview High in Rancho Peñasquitos, wisely pointed out that every student is different. “Some are really optimistic. Some are sad. Some are ready to do something about it,” Naomi says. Her friends, who stay connected via Zoom and FaceTime, talk about getting dressed up for dinner and music at someone’s house when quarantine is lifted (if they can’t have prom). Parents and seniors have a unique opportunity to brainstorm alternative activities that best fit their family’s needs and feelings about this interrupted senior year. Acknowledge frustration and disappointment, then put your heads together and get creative about ways to commemorate this significant time of life. Naomi and her mom are making plans to stage their own graduation “walk” that they will record and send to out-of-town family members who had planned to attend. Listen to your senior and hold on to hope. “I think people are doing a good job of trying to figure out how to make senior activities happen,” says Naomi. “But when quarantine ends, I’m going to get together with my friends and do everything we can to celebrate.” v Jody Lee Cates is a local mom and awardwinning writer who blogs about healthy relationships at www.jodyleecates.com

Send a Hug

Emily Dolton

this

Mother’s Day!

If Mom or Grammy is too far away to hug in person (or is in quarantine) this Mother’s Day, make and send an adorable, kid-sized hug! She will absolutely love receiving this personal sentiment via mail.

Supplies • 4-6 ft. craft paper (aka butcher paper) from roll* • Pencil • Crayons, watercolors or tempera paints

Instructions 1. Ensure the floor is free of dust and water. 2. Roll out enough paper to fit your child’s outstretched arms. 3. Have your child lay down so that his chest, arms and head are on the paper, face up, with arms and fingers spread wide.

44 • SanDiegofamily.com • May 2020

4. Use a pencil to trace your child’s upper torso, arms, hands and head. 5. Touch up any squiggly or inaccurate lines. Have your child draw his facial features, clothes, jewelry, glasses and any distinguishing features such as dimples and freckles. Make it personal because your loved one is missing the things that make him unique! 6. Create space for a message in the center of the chest by drawing a large heart or tracing a plate. Have the child write a heartfelt note to the person they’re sending the hug to. 7. Color/paint the portrait. Once dry, cut it out, following the outline of the portrait.

8. Fold the image until it fits inside a manila envelope. 9. Be sure to write “open carefully” on the exterior of the envelope. Watch our how-to video, with tips on how to draw symmetrical facial features, at www.sandiegofamily.com/for-the-kids/ crafts-for-kids. * For instructions on how to do this project using printer paper, visit the website above. v
