So Many Things to be Thankful For!

We are quickly reaching the end of 2022. It has been a hard year for many, with the prices of gas, food and almost everything else going up while coming out of the pandemic. But we are grateful for what we have—our kids, close family and friends. This Thanksgiving celebrate whatever brings you joy. Maybe it’s love, respect, kindness or compassion for others.

Lisa Gipson, our managing editor, has pulled together some fun things for the kids’ table this Thanksgiving (page 20). As my grandkids get older, they are starting to sit with the “big people,” but they still like the chatter and activities at the kids’ end of the table. We also join in, because it’s fun!

Look around your neighborhood this month. What can your family do to help out? It might be a little thing, like helping a neighbor bring in groceries, or it might be a bigger project like cleaning up the canyon behind your home. Ask your neighbors to help, making everyone feel really good when it is cleaned up. Find more suggestions on page 18.

November is Military Family Appreciation Month. Our military servicemen and women keep the United States of America out of harm’s way 24/7. Military families make sacrifices as well, so how can we support them? Thank them for their service, pray for them, provide a meal, make them cookies or pumpkin bread, or give them a monetary gift card.

San Diego Family distributed dozens of toys to local kids and parents for review. Thank you to everyone who participated. On page 22 you’ll see the best of what’s new this year. This is part one; look for part two next month.

Solving the Mystery of Meltdowns

Ever wonder why kids seem to unleash their negative emotions as soon as they come home from school or daycare? An El Cajon dad (who wishes to remain anonymous) describes what many parents experience: “All I ever hear from my son’s teachers and other parents is what a great kid he is. Polite and thoughtful. Happy to help and participate. This is not the same child I pick up from school. Our afternoons are filled with arguing, whining and lots of emotions. It makes me wonder what I’m doing wrong. Why do other people get the best of my boy and at home we battle through homework and dinner every night?”

Busy and demanding school days can leave kids feeling tired, overwhelmed and behaving in ways that are baffling. So, what’s going on and what are parents to do?

Restraint Collapse

The mystery of the meltdown has a name: restraint collapse. Parenting educator Andrea Loewen Nair coined the phrase “afterschool restraint collapse” in 2016 saying, “If someone’s ability to handle things is like a container, it’s the point where that container keeps getting filled past the brim and spills out everywhere. And once that happens, often the container collapses and just falls apart.”

Why Does it Only Happen with You?

It takes work and effort for kids to do everything they’re asked to do in a school day. Mental energy is spent while pent up physical energy builds. When feeling fidgety, talkative, rowdy, loud, frustrated, angry—even joyful and rambunctious—kids must control their feelings and keep a reign on their behavior to succeed. When they see parents at the end of the day, kids feel safe enough to let down their guard and pour it all out.

What to Do and How to Help

How do you manage these big emotions at the end of the day when you’re just as tired from work as your child is from school?

Educational Psychology Specialist Kaydon Schanberger of San Diego Kids First has good news. Armed with empathy, understanding and a plan, parents can help kids manage restraint collapse and sail a little more smoothly through the afterschool hours. Here’s what she recommends:

Smile when you see your child. After spending a day apart, make your reunion a moment of genuine warmth and connection. Schanberger encourages parents to greet children with a hug and a smile to let them know you’re happy to see them. “If you’ve had a stressful day yourself, take a couple deep breaths and set your intention to be in a good mood,” she says.

Offer a healthy snack. A nourishing snack does wonders for both body and mind, so give kids a few choices. Set out healthy options such as vegetable sticks, fruit, nuts or yogurt. Don’t forget to also offer water. If you’re heading to an afterschool activity, bring a couple of snack choices in the car. “Even if pickup is close to dinner time, a snack is always a good idea,” Schanberger says.

Save your questions. Sometimes out of eagerness to bond, parents pepper kids with questions as soon as they get in the car. Creating quiet space after a busy

day will get a better response according to Schanberger. “Let your child lead the conversation,” she says. “You may hear what’s really on their minds, rather than answers they think mom or dad want to hear about their day.”

Allow time to unwind and re-connect. When you arrive home, let kids take a break to do something they enjoy. Let them play with the family pet, play outside, help in the kitchen or spend time resting in their room. “No one wants to be picked up and hear a list of things they have to do or demands that are coming next,” says Schanberger. Building this kind of margin into your day is a necessary part of growing healthy families.

Recognize the meltdown for what it is. Remember that a restraint collapse meltdown is different from an intentional tantrum. “Some parents don’t know what to do with a meltdown,” says Schanberger, “so they try to control the situation through discipline.” A more helpful approach is to treat the meltdown as a time when children need a soft place to land (not as a behavior problem).

For parents like the father we spoke to in El Cajon, learning to recognize that meltdowns are a sign his son feels safe enough to pour out what he’s been holding in all day is reassuring. “It’s good to know that this isn’t something I’m doing wrong,” he says, “but a way for us to learn together how to handle hard feelings and being tired in more positive, loving ways.”

Solving the mystery of end-ofday meltdowns gives parents an opportunity to help kids feel nurtured and loved. By validating feelings and allowing room for expression and rest, kids learn how to make the transition from school to home more easily, even after a particularly stressful day.

Make your heritage come alive

Genealogy for kids doesn’t have to be boring. Instead of poring over microfiche and birth/death records, a kid-friendly approach to family history will entice young genealogists to learn about where they came from. Here are fun ways to pique your family’s interest about its past.

Start with Stories

Kids love hearing about themselves and their ancestors. Capitalize on their curiosity by sharing stories that have been passed down by your family.

• Talk about the day your kids were born, when they first walked and talked, and the funny things they did as toddlers and preschoolers.

• Talk about when their parents and grandparents were young. Kids will be intrigued to hear about the time a parent dealt

with a schoolyard bully or how grandparents met and married.

• Discuss what technology, cars and clothes were like when their relatives were young.

• Introduce kids to “celebrities” of the family. The rest of the world may not know them, but the entire family recognizes the humorous, memorable or notorious things they did.

• Play old and new family videos. Compare how video technology has changed over time.

Give It Props

Like actors on a stage, enhance your family history with props. Search attics, basements or boxes for important family heirlooms such as jewelry, furniture, books, handmade quilts, magazines and old toys.

• Draw kids in with photographs. They love to see grandpa when he still had hair or mom when she wore an 80s hairdo. Black and white photos are intriguing because of the differences in fashion, cars and homes.

• Make a list of family heirlooms and talk about why each is an important memento.

• Dig out old technology like rotary phones, old typewriters and ham radios. Show photos or videos of a jukebox.

• Visit a museum to see historic forms of transportation such as steam locomotives, Model Ts and horse-drawn carriages.

Do Old-Time Chores and Hobbies

• Complete a starter cross-stitch or sewing kit for kids.

• Learn to knit.

• Use a woodworking kit to build something.

• Churn butter in a mason jar or make ice cream in a resealable plastic bag.

• Bake and cook from scratch using family recipes.

Share Your Ancestry with Art

Even preschoolers can fill out a simple family tree template. Try these ideas to capture your lineage creatively:

• Represent your family tree with photographs and portraits, or produce a digital presentation.

• Create a family crest or duplicate your own if one already exists. Discuss the special elements with the kids and frame for display at home.

• Visit a cemetery and make rubbings of family gravestones.

• Paint portraits from family photographs.

• Explore historic handwriting by looking at copies of the Constitution, Declaration of Independence or old family letters. Then let your child explore cursive

or hand-lettering with a calligraphy pen or quill.

• Design and sew a family quilt with squares of material from family baby blankets, clothes and other family heirlooms.

• Make DIY silhouettes using photographs and frame them.

Write it Down

Older kids may enjoy these ways to document family history:

• Interview the oldest person in the family and write a biography or summaries of their favorite times in history.

• Write an “I Am From” poem (there are several formulas on the internet).

• Compile a family cookbook.

Visit Family Landmarks

When I was little, I remember walking around my grandparents’ farm, exploring the smokehouse and hen house, and watching my grandmother get water from the well. Visiting family landmarks creates a tangible connection to the past. Tour a family cemetery, take a self-guided walking tour of the town where your family originated or visit old storefronts, farms, homes or property that used to be owned or inhabited by generations before yours.

• Grow a vegetable garden and use the produce to make dinner.

Become Descendent Detectives

The idea of doing research may seem boring to kids, but solving a mystery sounds exciting! Engage kids by uncovering family history like a detective.

• Explore baby books or old versions of The Bible that include important dates from your family’s lineage.

• Discover what first and last family names mean.

• Teens may have interest in investigating family documents such as birth, death and marriage certificates.

• Using the Find a Grave website, I was able to find my grandparents’ gravestones online and view the family cemetery, even though it’s in another state. Visit www.findagrave.com if you have ancestors that lived far away.

Learning family history can be a rich, rewarding experience with the right approach. Begin a journey through the past with your children and start a tradition for generations to come. v

Doing Good Deeds 21 ways kids can help the community

November is a great time to teach children the value and importance of caring for others; even better, do good deeds as a family regularly. Here are 21 practical suggestions to support your neighborhood, especially community members who have difficulty caring for themselves. While these ideas are for kids and teens, children should never volunteer without a parent’s help and permission.

Help coach or run practice for a sports team of younger kids.

Contact your local hospital to find out the best ways to support pediatric patients, a wonderful gesture during the holidays when their peers may be out having fun.

Donate clothing and food to San Diego Rescue Mission downtown or Interfaith Community Services in Escondido to help teach children the value of giving to people less fortunate than themselves.

Help senior citizens learn to use technology, such as how to search the internet, choose privacy settings, send emails and navigate smartphones, so they can better communicate with family and friends.

Bring in a neighbor’s garbage cans, recycle bin or newspaper.

Fill your local Little Free Library with gently used books. Find one near you at www.littlefreelibrary.org/map.

Help “rescue” fruit from orchards and homes where it would otherwise go to waste. Learn more at Produce Good: www.producegood.org/volunteer.

Ask your local library or elementary school if they need tutors or homework help for younger kids in reading, writing or basic math.

Help out at a charity shop or thrift store that gives proceeds to nonprofit organizations. These shops rely on volunteers to sort, stock and organize donations (and more).

Organize a game, activity or special visit to residents at a nursing home or assisted living facility. They often get fewer visits from family and friends than people realize.

Help elderly neighbors with yardwork such as raking leaves, weeding, watering or mowing grass.

Have a lemonade (or apple cider) stand and donate the proceeds to your favorite local charity.

Kids Table

There are two schools of thought (and good reasons for both) about whether or not to have a “kids table” on Thanksgiving. Whatever side of the table you’re on, you’ll love these activities and recipes that elevate the kids table into something extra special and fun. Next thing you know, everyone in the family will want to sit there! Alternatively, consider planning a Friendsgiving event on a different day this month.

Turkey Veggie Platter

Roasted rainbow carrots decorated to look like a turkey are a surefire way to get kids to eat their veggies! Serve with hummus or ranch dip for a tasty side dish.

Edible Sand Art

Colorful bottles of sanding sugar are another way to identify seats at the kids table, or a fun (albeit messy) activity for kids after they’ve eaten. Layer colored sugar in little glass bottles (have a few small funnels on hand), write each child’s name on a tag, then tie it to a bottle with twine.

Thanksgiving Sodas

Sure, you can pick up a bottle of sparkling cider at the store, but since we’re kicking things up a notch this year, why not make one (or more) of these delicious homemade sodas? Choose from apple-pomegranate, spiced cran-grape or pecan pie. Make the simple flavored syrup, then stir a few tablespoons into a glass of seltzer to make it bubbly.
