I’ve met my goals and I’m happy! I feel a lot better, healthier and I have more energy. I’ve noticed that I’ve had to get new clothes!” Mandy C. — San Diego
“After being on Dr. Wong’s program for 2 months, I’ve lost almost 40 pounds. I was lethargic and couldn’t keep up with my kids but I’ve found an answer to my energy problems and I wake up with energy, I feel better, I’ve been eating healthier and I’ve been more active. Thank you Dr. Wong!” Rachel R. — San Diego
“Before I came to see Dr. Wong, I had a lot of health concerns. I had extreme knee pain, I was over-weight and I also had a lack of energy. I am a lot more energetic and I feel like working out. I am stronger, more alert, more flexible and limber so I appreciate everything about Dr. Wong. An Attitude of
Gratitude by Gina Rosenfeld, MD
The holidays are upon us and now is a great time to remind ourselves to slow down, take time, be thankful for family and friends, and be grateful for all that we have. Studies show that people who are grateful are significantly happier, healthier, and have lower levels of stress and depression. In addition, gratitude breeds joy, enthusiasm, interest, and determination, all great reasons to teach our children an “attitude of gratitude.” Children are naturally egocentric; from early on it’s clear they believe the world revolves around them. Parents tend to reinforce this idea as we attend to their every need, want and desire. And now, with the internet and technology at our fingertips, everything is faster and oftentimes instant. I see babies, kids and parents constantly engaged and wanting more, instead of appreciating and understanding what they have around them. So how can we teach our children and remind ourselves to appreciate all that we have and to be grateful? Well, the first big challenge is making
gratitude an everyday experience. As the idea of gratitude can be abstract for toddlers, children, and even teenagers, it’s important for YOU to live it. Remember, you are your child’s biggest role model and they are watching you. With that being said, it’s up to you to set the example and show some gratitude.
Be polite, model good manners
There are countless ways to express gratitude, so why not weave some of these simple suggestions into everyday life:
long, but remember to make room for gratitude. Gratitude not only breeds good manners, kindness and generosity, but it also fosters empathy and other life skills. Without a doubt, instilling grateful feelings in all of us will benefit everyone now and later in life.
and help those around you, reinforcing the importance of kindness.
Be aware and engaged, be mindful of your words and tone; use kind words and appreciate your family.
Life gets busy and days are
Show appreciation by conveying
you pay attention to real effort - take the time to praise your children when they clean up their toys, help with chores, and/or finish their homework without reminding them.
Remember to say and emphasize
“please” and “thank you” as you go about your day. Whether you are thanking them, a friend, or even a stranger who lent a helping hand, saying “thank you” extends beyond manners and demonstrates appreciation.
And now it’s time to have a wonderful Thanksgiving, enjoy your family and friends, make memories and show some gratitude - it might just be contagious!
Encourage
volunteering and donations. Helping those less fortunate is a great way to foster generosity and show that we are in this together.

Shannon Dean Turn off Electronics
Electronics often interfere with the ability to catch up and connect with family. Take the necessary food and family photos, then opt for a technology-free table. Simply say, “Let’s turn off the electronics for a few hours,” and watch the conversations flow.
Remember Absent Family Members
Build Family Connection with meaningful Thanksgiving traditions
It can be therapeutic and respectful to remember family members who can’t attend Thanksgiving or who have passed away. Consider lighting a candle, leaving an open chair or place setting, serving favorite dishes, or saying a special blessing. It’s important for all family members to know that despite any loss or absence, they will always be held up by generational family bonds. Experts stress that sharing memories of absent family members keeps them close, but to use discretion if grief is fresh.
Tell Family Stories
Many consider Thanksgiving the
best winter holiday since it focuses on family and gratitude. Taking part in yearly rituals gives families a sense of stability, identity and connection, and an opportunity to demonstrate what makes them unique. A study by the Society for Research in Child Development found that parents who have pleasant memories of family traditions have more positive interactions with their own children, who may continue the cycle. Here are eight easy and meaningful Thanksgiving rituals to facilitate family connections.
Share Dishes that Celebrate Your Family’s Identity
The perfect Thanksgiving menu varies from family to family. Serve dishes that are personally meaningful or reflect the family’s heritage or experiences. Don’t shy away from regional dishes that reflect guests’ identity and personal preferences. Consider cooking such
16 • SanDiegofamily.com • November 2018
dishes with children so they learn to appreciate them and can pass the traditions down to their own families.
Use (and add to) Family Heirlooms
Many hosts serve Thanksgiving dinner on “the good china” so the meal is extra special. Some families embrace mismatched vintage pieces that are specific to the holiday. Those who don’t start with a complete set will find that building a larger collection is relatively easy and inexpensive. Scour auction sites, garage sales and thrift stores to find matching pieces or items that complement what you currently use. It’s fun to add to your collection as your family grows. Consider making the pieces available to whoever hosts the Thanksgiving meal. Tip: Replacements Limited (www.replacements.com) helps identify unknown names and patterns of dinnerware, silverware, glassware and flatware.
Bring meaning to dinner conversation by asking family members to share stories. Doing so ensures that mealtime topics remain positive and that family members gain new insight about one another. Adults can begin by asking open-ended questions like, “What was your favorite birthday?” Or, “What personal attribute is most important to you?” Answers may lead to an intimate peek inside a family member’s personality, values and experiences. Tip: StoryCorps offers conversation starters in categories such as family heritage and growing up. Visit www .storycorps.org/participate/greatquestions; Family Tree Magazine offers 20 questions applicable to all family members at www .familytreemagazine.com/premium/20questions; and games such as Table Topics facilitate fun and meaningful family discussions.
Provide Activities for Kids
Even the most engaged and wellbehaved children enjoy entertainment
or activities meant just for them. Provide materials for handmade ornaments or winter decorations that guests can take home, since many families decorate the day after Thanksgiving. Pre-assembled craft kits or games are a great alternative. Fun activity: Find tips on how to plan a Charlie Brown Thanksgiving for the kids at www.sandiegofamily.com/ seasonal-happenings/charlie-brownthanksgiving. It will be a celebration they never forget!
Value Tradition, but Be Flexible As valuable as repetitive rituals are, change is inevitable. Unforeseen events or circumstances may mean that food, participants or activities are different from year to year. An open mind and spirit of acceptance ensure that changes won’t alter the purpose and enjoyment of the holiday.
Do you want your child to appear on the
2019 Cover Kids Search
Cooper was one of the 2018 Cover Kids Winners!
cover of San Diego Family Magazine? SDFM is looking for six children ages 2-11 and one multiples combo to appear on the cover of a future issue of San Diego Family Magazine or our annual Out & About family adventure publication.
Express Gratitude Encourage everyone to express what they are thankful for. Share verbally around the table, or create a gratitude jar or paper chain before the meal. Placing an emphasis on gratitude keeps the focus on what is truly important. Fun activity: Find instructions for DIY Thankful Jars at www .sandiegofamily.com/crafts-for-kids/ thankful-jars. Experts agree that encouraging deep, ongoing family relationships is worth the effort. According to Dr. Marie Hartwell-Walker, author of Tending the Family Heart through the Holidays, it is important to remember we are part of something bigger than ourselves and that our relationships with people are important. v

When You’re the One in Need: A Personal Reflection Maybe you’re the one who needs help this season. I know how that feels. When I was 14, the Cedar Fire destroyed my family home. My aunt passed away a few days later. My family spent months wading through an ocean of shock and grief. Everyone in our lives knew that we had suffered devastating loss and many offered to help in any way that they could. At first, my parents were hesitant to accept assistance. Nobody wants to burden others.
Ways to Serve Others as a Family Anne Malinoski
It’s the season of giving—the perfect time to show kids the importance of giving back. Here’s how to include the whole family in your efforts to support the community.
Food Drive According to the San Diego Hunger Coalition, 1 in 8 adults and 1 in 5 children experience food insecurity countywide. Your family can make a difference by hosting a drive for the local food bank. Give friends and family one week’s notice, then walk door-to-door with the kids to collect non-perishable items. Make an even bigger impact by hosting a virtual drive. Thanks to bulk buying power, the food bank can feed five people with every $1 donation. To host a food drive through the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank, register online at www.sandiegofoodbank.org.
Care Packages for Homeless Enlist the kids’ help to create and distribute care packages for our homeless neighbors. Items might include socks, granola, water, applesauce, tuna, or nut butter with crackers. Keep the packs in the car and share them when you see someone who needs help. As always, use caution and good judgment when interacting with strangers.
Practice Random Acts of Kindness Work together to brainstorm different ways your family can show kindness to others. Think about small things that make a big impact, like playing with someone new, writing an encouraging note or helping a neighbor with a chore. Once you have a long list, post it on the fridge and challenge each family member to complete one act of kindness every day for a month. Talk about what you did at dinnertime. Need help starting your list? Find 41 random acts of kindness in our article “Make the World a Better Place”: www.sandiegofamily.com/donations-volunteers-wanted-and-localfundraisers/random-acts-of-kindness. cont.on p.20

But here’s what we learned very quickly: Our friends and family were suffering, too. Observing our struggle made them feel helpless. Acting on their concerns helped ease the pain they felt along with us. When you accept help, it is a gift to those who love you. If you believe, like I do, that your purpose in life is to serve others, then you must also realize that graciously accepting help gives others an opportunity to fulfill their purpose. Moreover, asking for help demonstrates that you trust your loved ones—and that is an enormous gift. Imagine how it would feel if a beloved friend turned to you in an especially vulnerable moment? It would feel wonderful to be of service. Don’t hesitate to give others that opportunity.
Not sure what kind of help to ask for? Here are a few ideas: • Rides to school, errands, etc. • Childcare, eldercare or pet care • Quality time together • Necessities such as diapers or non-perishable foods • Home or yard care • If lots of friends offer to make dinner, visit www.mealtrain .com to easily create a schedule and provide dietary information.

Canyon Rim Children's Center “Dedicated to the individuality of children.”
Canyon Rim Children’s Center (CRCC) has been providing high quality, enrichment, preschool programs for San Diego children since 1998. We are a full day, year round, enrichment program. Our learning philosophy is based on developmentally appropriate practices inspired by the schools in Reggio Emilia, Italy. Our developmental, play-based, preschool serves children ages two through six.
At CRCC, we strive to maintain child to teacher ratios lower than those required by the State of California. Our teachers’ educational credentials exceed those as specified by the State. Our professional staff creates a safe and caring environment where the emphasis is on learning through play. As Fred Rogers, a.k.a., “Mr. Rogers” said, “Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children play is serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood.” We recognize each child is a unique person with individual rates of growth. Our goal is to meet each child’s

emotional, social, cognitive and physical needs in a relaxed, loving environment, free from personal criticism and excessive competition. Activities in art, music, math, language, science, dramatic play, fine and gross motor development are fashioned to facilitate transition from one developmental stage to the next. Our teachers also use our wellequipped, natural playgrounds to support exploration and promote physical development. Natural outdoor spaces enhance curiosity & encourage children to develop an appreciation and awareness of nature. At CRCC, children develop the skills of observation, inquiry, concentration, problem solving, and self-reliance. Our structured, yet open-ended program prepares each child to utilize his or her intellectual and creative abilities in future learning tasks. Here we work to give each child the tools and the foundation on which to build a lifetime of learning. Kindergarten teachers love our CRCC children!
Support Local Heroes Cultivate appreciation for police, firefighters and nurses by preparing and delivering treats for them to enjoy. Call ahead for guidelines and best times to visit. Volunteer Together Don’t wait until the kids are in high school to volunteer together. Consider these great organizations that accept volunteers under age 14 (find more at www .sandiegofamily.com/things-todo/donations-volunteers-andlocal-fundraisers): Feeding San Diego welcomes families with children as young as 6. Anne Malinoski and mother of three who has learned to expect behavior struggles when her husband is away. Even though her children attend counseling, their frustrations occasionally boil over in ways that civilians might not understand. “My kid is not hitting your kid because she’s mad at your kid. She’s hitting because she’s mad at life,” she says.
Big Worries
What Military Kids Want Us to Know San Diego’s military kids
have a different set of worries than their civilian peers. But they might struggle to share those concerns with outsiders. “There’s a thing called fortress mentality. Problems often stay within that fortress and you don’t go outside that fortress. For the most part, our support structure is within,” says Kim Hunt, PhD, a veteran military spouse and USD Professor and Research Associate for The Nonprofit Institute. Her research focuses on the resilience of highly mobile military children— kids who move frequently due to a parent’s military orders. While military families tend to lean on each other, it’s still possible for civilians to reach out in meaningful ways. The first step is understanding. Here’s an inside look at the challenges military kids face in our community.
Making Friends According to the Department of Defense, military kids move an average of six to nine times between Kindergarten and 12th grade. Saying goodbye to friends is hard. Making new friends—often in the middle of the school year—is even harder. “How am I supposed to fit in when these kids have been going to school with each other
since elementary school? They’ve already established a relationship with one another,” says Beth, 14, of Pacific Beach.
Gaps in Curriculum and Extracurriculars “One of the ways to fit in at school is to be very academic,” says Hunt. But if academic standards vary from state to state, a military kid could fall out of sync with his peers. When a child falls behind, self-image suffers. Too far ahead? Hello, boredom! The same goes for extracurricular activities. Sports, music or Scouting can add much-desired continuity to children’s lives. It is disappointing if chosen activities aren’t available in their new town, or if differing requirements force them to resume at a lower level.
Frequent Separations Military kids say goodbye to their parents more often than civilians realize. “Even though my dad isn’t technically deployed, he still misses a lot of games, school events and other stuff because of duty days, being underway (at-sea training) and working long hours,” says Ashlynn, 12, of central San Diego. Frequent separations disrupt the family routine. Sarah is a Navy spouse
Even the youngest military kids are concerned that loved ones could be injured or killed in action. Elevenyear-old Greyson was heartbreakingly candid about the burden he lives with. “It’s hard when your parent leaves for months at a time and you don’t know if they’ll ever come back,” he says. “Children watch the news and many understand the dangers parents may face while deployed,” says Lisa Marcolongo. Her husband Nico, a Marine Corps Veteran, experienced Post-Traumatic Stress (commonly referred to as PTSD, although most veterans contend it is not a disorder) after his second deployment to Iraq. Their son was only 3 at the time. “This isn’t simply a business trip,” she says.
The Kids Are Alright Despite the unusual stresses of military life, few kids experience severe academic or behavioral issues, and many grow to reflect positively on their upbringing. “Most highly mobile kids have a few issues integrating into a new culture, making new friends, and dealing with inconsistent curriculum, but most of them navigate them without major problems,” says Hunt. “They’re learning how to be flexible and resilient. During my research, I often hear military youth say, ‘I survived this before, I can survive it again!’”

Mateo Sais Montoya, 6th grade student – Mateo joined RVA just this year, but has proven himself to be a marvelous addition. A quiet young man who would have been lost in a traditional large middle school, Mateo quickly became a role model for the younger students, playing patiently with the smaller children and taking responsibility for his actions. In one instance, he reported himself to the teacher so he could share in the consequences even though the teacher hadn’t known he’d also broken the rules. This level of maturity is rare indeed.

School Recognition: Outstanding Students Congratulations to the hardworking kids highlighted here!
Lan Ho, 4th grade student – Lan enrolled at RVA in 3rd grade, because, with her quirky sense of humor and wide-ranging curiosity, she didn’t conform to the expectations of teachers and classmates. She quickly proved she was capable of working well above grade level, which she can do at RVA. Over time, she started to trust others to be friends, she learned to admit when she didn’t understand, and she started to thrive. Today, Lan helps others spontaneously, works to understand things that don’t come easily to her, and laughs infectiously.

Hand them a copy of San Diego Family Magazine, so they learn what San Diego County offers. Even if your kids don’t instantly connect, your new neighbors will gain ideas for quality family time— and a strong family bond is what helps military kids thrive. “Many kids I’ve interviewed say no matter how bad their first week at a new school went, they always knew when they came home, they were safe, valued and taken care of,” says Hunt. “So for them, family is the best coping mechanism.” v
