How to Find the Perfect Preschool

We were running errands when one of my teens shouted, “Look! It’s our old preschool!” Soon my other kids were chiming in, “I loved it there!” and, “That was my favorite school. Do you remember when…” Just like that, we walked down memory lane, reminiscing about craft projects, field trips and that time the teacher helped with a loose tooth that just wouldn’t budge.

It makes me happy that my kids remember their preschool days as fondly as I do. Finding a good preschool may seem stressful, but when you focus on the right things, you’ll find the perfect spot for your family. Here are tips to help find a great preschool environment:

Start with parents. Find out what local preschools they

love and why. Ask if they are friends with other families there. Ask about teachers. The most important thing is to talk to real people. Don’t rely solely on social media and online reviews for information.

Talk to kids. At the park, at the library, at your friend’s houses. Find out what kids love doing at preschool or what their favorite parts of the school day are. Ask to see their latest project. Most kids are thrilled to share their expertise. You can learn a lot from them when you ask specific questions and listen.

Consider schedule. Does the school have a schedule that works for your family? It is essential that days and hours align with your needs. There are schools with two-day, three-day or fiveday programs. Some meet for half-day, while others meet all day. Some include lunch; others do not.

Ask about educational philosophy. Every school has a unique approach. Some schools focus on academics, while others focus on play-based activities or social skills. Some schools emphasize nature-based learning, while others focus on the arts. Don’t get distracted by what the philosophies are called; think about how your child’s personality and interests, and your family’s values, line up with what the school offers.

Talk money. It is essential that school tuition fits your family’s budget. Consider extras such as fundraisers, field trips, school supplies and parties. Be bold about these things in advance so you are not blindsided by unexpected expenses. Choosing a school your family can afford creates a less stressful environment for all involved.

Ask about parent involvement. Find out how much parents are expected to be involved and make sure you are comfortable with it. Some schools ask for regular parent volunteers during school, while others only invite parents for holidays and year-end programs. Parents may be required to help with school events or field trips

Observe. Ask if there is a good time to visit during a school day. Watching the school in action is one of the best ways to discover if it will be a good fit. Chat with parents at drop-off or pickup (or ask for parent references). Observe kids as they interact with each other. Get a feel for the atmosphere your child would be learning in.

Finding the perfect preschool can be a little time-consuming, but it doesn’t have to be stressful. Be realistic about your family’s needs and how they match up with the schools you’re considering. With these tips, you will discover a learning environment that is right for your children. v

I often wonder if my children will get my best or worst traits. From physical appearance to my affinity or disdain for certain foods, I marvel at how genetics works. When it comes to math ability, you might be surprised to hear that genetics is not a factor.

I was teaching high school math while pregnant with my first child, when one of my students said, “Well, at least your kid will be good at math.” The myth is pervasive; we tend to think there are “math people” and then everyone else. But it’s not true. Even though I secretly hoped that the nine months

An Important Note for Parents

Math trauma is a real thing. If you had math experiences that trigger a negative emotional response or make you panic at the sight of fractions, there is still hope for your kids. Here is how to help your own children develop a positive math identity:

Work to have a positive math attitude. It’s best to avoid saying, “I hated math, too” or “I was never good at math.” While the sentiments may be true, try to find another way to talk about math that doesn’t perpetuate negativity.

Avoid the rush. Slow down— there’s no need to do math quickly. Some of the most well-known and respected mathematicians will say they’re not fast at math. Being good at math doesn’t mean being fast, so take away the timers and races if it doesn’t feel good to your child. Find ways to highlight taking time and having perseverance in solving problems. It’s an important habit to lean into as children grow in math and beyond.

Play. Puzzling and problem solving can be fun and playful. “What books are to reading, play is to math,” says Dan Finkel, math educator and game creator. We already know how to encourage a love of reading; the same can be done for math. Play fun problem-solving games to help children associate math with joy.

of in-utero math lessons my child endured would pay off, I’ve learned that parents have the ability every day to help children develop math reasoning skills and a positive math identity, even if it’s not their strength. If you’d like to support your child with math at home, try these suggestions.

Reframe what math is. Sure, math is about numbers, computation, fractions and equations, but it’s also about shapes, spatial reasoning, problem solving and patterns. When you plan a trip around the grocery store to avoid the cookie aisle, but also steer clear of the ice cream aisle, you’re doing math (graph theory). You’re also doing math when you pack the trunk of a car, a diaper bag or your child’s lunch box (spatial reasoning). You’re doing math when you notice patterns, whether it’s music, gardening, artwork or roads.

Math is really just the study of patterns.

Engage. Start noticing math all around you. Pick a pattern and ask your child what they see; find something that needs to be packed up and ask your child how she would do it; or plan a route to a destination and ask your child which way she would go. Here are more game prompts:

Which one doesn’t belong? This game works great with most objects, but imagine a circle, square, triangle and line. Ask kids, “Which one do you think doesn’t belong and why?” I love this prompt because there is often more than one possible answer. Check out the “Which One Doesn’t Belong” website for more puzzles and ideas: www.wodb.ca.

What’s the same? What’s different? Anytime you compare things, these two questions kick your brain into high mathematical gear. Pick two pictures, cars, houses or toys, and consider what characteristics are the same. Name as many things as you can. Then, with the same two things, consider what’s different about them. Come up with as many answers as possible.

Not only does this exercise support the game “Which One Doesn’t Belong,” it also helps build an understanding of complicated relationships between two things—multiple angles and perspectives to consider—and supports the mathematical idea of sets.

What’s next? Whether you notice a pattern around you, or create a pattern with letters, blocks, toy cars or other objects, ask kids, “What’s next in the pattern?” This exercise helps build awareness of patterns and what makes them unique.

Let curiosity lead. Kids are born curious. Something magical happens when kids get to explore things they’re really curious about. Teachers may not always be able to let curiosity drive math investigation, so implement it at home to foster interest and development outside the classroom.

Tips to Teach Kids Time Management

One of our jobs as parents is to help children become self-sufficient. It’s no secret that no one wins when parents do everything for their kids. The start of the school year is a perfect time to teach (or reinforce) time management skills. Here are some quick tips. Set a bedtime.

Kids ages 5–12 need 10–11 hours of sleep per day. Set a reasonable bedtime and stick to it.

Turn your child’s routine into a checklist.

Have kids create their own calendars.

The sooner kids start learning to use a calendar, the sooner they will become more independent, and the less you’ll have to do for them (which is a good thing!).

Put time on their side.

Help kids develop a greater awareness of time by buying them a watch and teaching them how to gauge the amount of time needed to complete routine tasks. Good news for little ones—there are some great games available that start teaching time concepts as young as 2 years old. (See sidebar.)

Teach kids to plan ahead. Being somewhere on time, prepared and ready to go, requires planning. Help kids create a checklist of what they need to do and items needed before departure until it becomes second nature.

Establish meal times.

Setting regular meal times for the family (such as 7 a.m. breakfast) will not only help kids become more aware of time, but helps ensure time is spent together as a family.

Eliminate distractions. Nothing sucks up time like being glued to a screen. Be sure to set parameters around screen usage, whether it’s TV, phone, iPad, tablet or something else. Parents, too! v

10 Reasons to get involved in your child’s activities

When my first child started kindergarten, I volunteered to be the editor of the school newsletter. I knew it was a big undertaking, but volunteering in that capacity opened a lot of doors while supporting the teachers, staff and parents who educated and influenced my children. It was a win-win for everyone.

Consider volunteering at your child’s school, for sports teams, scouts, clubs, church groups or other extracurricular activities. Organizations need your time and talents, and volunteering provides a backstage pass to part of your child’s world that you may not otherwise have access to. Not convinced? Here are more reasons to get involved in your child’s activities.

1. See and be seen. When you spend time at school or extracurricular activities, teachers, coaches and staff get to know you and your children a little better and you get to know them. It also provides a first-hand look at how your child interacts with others and who their friends are. Getting to know other children typically serves families well in the years to come, and in a variety of ways.

2. Make connections to your child’s day. One of the benefits of volunteering at school is that you become familiar with the people, places

and policies of your child’s day. You meet teachers’ aids, see the silly hat the librarian wears during story time, and understand how bathroom breaks work. You have a better understanding of your child’s day when she talks about it (or not).

3. Build your social network. As a volunteer, I have worked with dozens of parents over the years that I would not have known by only attending Open House events. While spending time on a committees together or working at family events, some of us formed bonds that led to wonderful friendships, even after the kids moved on to different friend groups.

4. Time is money. If you can share your talents—graphic design, culinary, sewing or organizational skills, accounting knowledge—then the school, foundation or PTA doesn’t have to use their limited funds for certain jobs. More money can go directly to the kids and their experiences.

5. They can’t do it without you. Big school events require dozens and dozens of volunteers. Not only are people needed the day of, but also months in advance for planning and fundraising to make it all come together. These events are so fun! They offer another great way to meet other neighborhood families.

For groups such as recreational sports teams and scout troops, groups can’t form or meet without someone to lead. Consider volunteering— or partnering with another parent to share the responsibility.

6. It looks good on a resumé. For parents who take a break from professional endeavors to raise a family, don’t overlook the importance of including years of volunteer experience on your resumé. If and when you return to the workforce, time spent as a committee board member and in positions of leadership hold value with prospective employers. Even if there is no break in your employment history, volunteer time may open doors and provide an edge.

7. Open new doors. You never know who you will meet or what connections you will make as you meet others in the community. You may discover a new job, a new interest, or a stepping stone into something else. A friend of ours volunteered as a soccer coach, having played in high school and college. He forgot how much he enjoyed and missed the game; he became a certified soccer trainer after his son moved on to pursue other interests.

8. Learn new skills. A neighbor who had a daughter in the marching band volunteered to help with uniforms, mending and hemming as needed. She had always wanted to learn to sew; time spent with experienced band moms allowed her to try it.

9. Set an example. In a recent conversation with my daughter’s softball coach, she mentioned that the only kids who help carry equipment and clean up without complaint are kids of travel coaches. Work alongside (and in front of) your kids so that pitching in comes naturally to them.

10. It feels good. You have a sense of belonging to a community of people who have a common bond or goal. Giving time is a precious gift—sometimes more precious than writing a check—but all of it helps, so do what you can. The memories you create with your child and for yourself will last a lifetime. v

National Apple Month may be in October, but most local orchards launch apple-picking season in September and many run out of apples by the time October comes around, so don’t miss out! Here are fun ways to usher in apple season.
