things comes with the territory of parenting. We coach and encourage kids through frustration, tears and even bursts of anger as they learn to tie shoes, write their names and ride a bike. We wouldn’t dream of holding them back because something appears to be too hard to tackle. Instead, we mend scraped knees, reassure pounding hearts and beam right along with them as children master each new skill. Keeping this momentum going as kids grow is a great parental responsibility because the challenges children face grow right along with them— challenges that require kids to persevere, manage the stress and anxiety of life, and triumph over

Jody Lee Cates setbacks. Kids need to become resilient in order to keep trying when they want to give up, and parents can help.

Becoming resilient takes practice and just like learning to walk or ride a bike, it usually involves some pain and discomfort for both children and parents. Every well-meaning parent knows it’s tough to not jump in when kids struggle. It starts small: Maybe there is a difficult playmate and it’s easier to just stop playing with him. Or a favorite toy is lost and a quick replacement stops the tears. We can fix the problem—and it feels good to fix things. Sometimes that’s the right decision. But the stakes get higher as kids get older: We might find ourselves over-helping with difficult homework, requesting teachers who aren’t too tough, and rushing forgotten lunches or assignments to school to avoid anxiety, embarrassment or negative consequences. Our intentions are good, but rescuing (and too much help) sends kids the wrong message. Instead of “You’ve got this! I believe in you!” these actions communicate, “You can’t handle hard things.” When children begin believing this, our efforts to reduce their anxiety can backfire. Erica Rood, MA, Ed. who works

with parents, teens and preteens at Inspire Balance Coaching in Del Mar says, “When teens have not developed resilience, they tend to give up quickly and easily. They tend to catastrophize and feel helpless in the face of a perceived catastrophe. Instead of seeing a challenge as an opportunity for growth and a temporary circumstance, they freeze or feel their world is crashing down. They can develop anxiety and depression.” Children who are allowed to experience hard things with the supportive coaching of parents and other loving adults learn to believe in their ability to figure out challenges. They see themselves as smart, strong, problem-solvers who know how to manage feelings and how to ask for help when needed. “Fostering resilience in younger children is essential,” says Rood, “so as they enter the teen years, they have a strong sense of who they are and what they value, they have an ability to cope and learn from challenges, and they have tools for handling life’s ups and downs with ease and confidence.” Kids of all ages can learn how to navigate through tough moments when parents give them ageappropriate opportunities to practice. Start looking for ways to give your little ones chances to exercise resilience. The next time there is a conflict with a friend, give them space to work it out themselves. Encourage them to stay engaged and work together to find a resolution. You might be surprised at how resourceful even the youngest children can be when given time to come up with their own solutions. As kids grow, talk about ways to communicate with difficult people and

NOOR CLOTHING INC. what to do instead of blaming others for being demanding or unfair. Difficult people and unfair situations are a reality of life. Help kids understand that we can’t change the way others treat us, but we can choose how we respond. Teach them how to ask good questions to clarify expectations and practice how to speak up respectfully. Include older children in decisionmaking and develop strategies together on how to manage time for homework, family time and outside activities. Help them identify healthy ways to self-sooth when they’re feeling overwhelmed, anxious or stressed.

From local musical theater to NBC’s “The Voice” If you’re a fan of NBC’s popular singing competition “The Voice”, then

you’re probably already familiar with Jackie Foster, the 22-year-old from Poway who was a finalist on Season 14. Her passionate vocals wowed TV viewers and celebrity coaches such as Adam Levine, Kelly Clarkson and Alicia Keys. Here she provides inspiration and tips for kids involved in music and performing arts.

Early Start Foster calls music her one true passion. She got her start in local musical theater at age 5, joining the North County Inland branch of Christian Youth Theater (CYT), a performing arts training program for kids ages 4–18. At age 8 Foster started singing lessons. “I’m still taking voice lessons because there’s still room for me to grow,” she says. “I think I fell in love with the stage because of musical theater— because of CYT,” she says. “I learned how to be comfortable on a stage with lights—feeling the sense of what you’re doing is important. That really helped me overcome nerves and performance anxiety.” She credits her parents, who still live in the San Diego area, with being very supportive.

Auditioning In high school, Foster auditioned for “American Idol,” “America’s Got Talent” and “The Voice.” She always made it past the first few rounds of auditions but was ultimately turned down. “I thought ‘Oh my gosh, I’m not meant to be a singer,’” says the former Miss Teen Poway (2011) and Miss Poway (2013). “These are professionals— and they told me no.”

FOSTERING YOUNG TALENT Jackie’s tips for kids who want to pursue performing arts. Don’t give up. “You’re young. This is your time to make mistakes, to learn, to mess up on stage—fall on your face, but then get right back up and continue,” says Foster. Get involved. Participate in youth theater, community theater and school productions. Make music videos. Foster made YouTube videos of her music, which is what got the attention of “The Voice” producers. Don’t stress. “Stop overthinking—just do it,” says Foster. “Don’t worry about what other people think.”

Fast forward to 2017: This time producers from “The Voice” found her. They saw online videos of Foster performing with her alternative rock band, Self Portraits. The producers said they liked what they saw and asked if she would like to fly out for the blind auditions. At the time, Foster was in Boston, ready to finish her last year at Berklee College of Music. She was hesitant to drop everything to be on TV, especially since the previous rejections were so emotional. “I thought to myself, ‘I don’t want to do another show. I don’t want to have to deal with rejection again,’” Foster says. “But how in the world are you ever going to know when an opportunity lines up the way it’s supposed to unless you just go for it?” So, she decided to go. “The Voice” flew her to Los Angeles, already a semifinalist on the show. Foster was a hit, finishing in the show’s top eight. Her fellow contestants were supportive and she loved working with celebrity mentors and judges. Initially she was star struck, but says the feeling didn’t last long. “That was definitely very intimidating, but they’re musicians just like us,” Foster says. She is glad she continued to pursue her dreams. “Even though I got a lot of no’s from professionals, I never gave up,” she says. “I think that’s why I made it so far on the show.”

What’s Next? Foster is back in Boston finishing up her Music Business degree. She plans to move to L.A. with her band after graduation in May 2019. Performing on “The Voice“ was all about cover songs, but Foster is ready to showcase original music. For those who love the performing

arts, theater education is an end in itself—intrinsically valuable for the beauty and fulfillment it brings. But researchers have observed that theater training is valuable for other reasons. Here are five benefits to young people who participate in theater arts.

Empathy

When kids portray characters onstage, they practice putting themselves in others’ shoes. Children who study theater tend to display higher levels of empathy later in life. In a 12-year study, UCLA professor James Catterall followed high school students who participated in performing arts training into their adult lives to compare them to students who did not participate. Among other benefits, he noted that performing arts training made a positive difference in the students’ ability to understand the feelings of others.

Academic Performance

Self-Esteem

Participation in drama boosts kids’ feelings of belonging and keeps them motivated at school. It also bolsters their ability to read and understand complex texts. According to the American Alliance for Theatre & Education (AATE), students who participate in performing arts have higher rates of school attendance, better SAT scores, improved communication skills and better reading comprehension. Building Bridges

According to AATE, the benefits of drama education are especially positive for at-risk students. Students with learning disabilities are more likely to maintain or improve their reading skills when they participate in theater. Children of low socio-economic status show higher levels of motivation and confidence when they take a drama class. And at-risk students showed improved attitudes when they were exposed to theater training.

Drama students work together to meet rehearsal deadlines, master challenging scenes and develop a work of art in a limited timeframe. That is, they use teamwork to accomplish big goals. They also learn to set smaller goals for themselves as individual performers. For instance, a student might need to improve her dance skills for one show, and work on delivering a moving monologue for another. It’s back-to-school season—time to shop for supplies, fill out forms, and help the kids get organized. This fall, teachers and school administrators will likely encourage you and other parents in the community to get more involved with your child’s daily education. Why? Because parental engagement has longterm and wide-ranging positive impacts on a child’s academic success, overall health, social relationships and future career possibilities. Here you’ll discover the importance of parent engagement, along with things you can do to better support your children academically. What is parent engagement? “Parent engagement means efforts by the school district and schools to seek input from all parents, and to engage parents as partners in their children’s education and in decisionmaking,” according to the California State PTA website. “It also means promoting parent participation in programs that meet the needs of their own students and others on campus.” A student’s success at school involves Parent active participation volunteers! by parents, teachers and Concerned administrators. At the most basic level, parents can simply talk to their kids about school. Ask what they learned that day, about homework assignments, how they did on a test, who they sat with at lunch, or something that made them laugh during class. These daily discussions will show your child that their life at school—and how they perform in class—is important. Parents might also choose to discuss how academic success leads to greater college choices and more future career pathways. “When parents talk to their children about school, expect them to do well, make sure that out-of-school activities are constructive, and help them plan for college, their children perform better in school,” states the National Education Association (NEA). To enable constructive homework sessions, create a quiet space for studying and set a regular time for daily homework. Try to be nearby to answer questions, but don’t be tempted to do your child’s homework, even if she is struggling. If needed, sit down and help guide her; discuss any difficulties with the teacher; and take advantage of tutoring services – sometimes offered after school at no cost. School communications, such as newsletters, emails, notices and mailings, often provide details of what is being taught in the classroom and ways the students are being assessed. These can also help keep you apprised of recent developments in state standardized testing. Explore local afterschool enrichment programs throughout this issue. Many offer quality activities at reasonable prices. Support literacy education by regularly visiting the library and, whenever you can, make it part of your family’s evening routine to read with your child before bed. Finally—and this is a big one— demonstrate appropriate electronic usage by putting your phones, tablets, laptops and other electronic devices away in order to give your children

Even with the talent and dedication of our community’s amazing educators, children still need their parents’ involvement in order to achieve their fullest potential. It will benefit your child’s academic success to communicate regularly with your child’s teachers, and attend back-to-school nights and teacher conferences. Many teachers are willing to schedule additional meetings when requested, and are reachable and responsive to email communication. If you can, consider helping out on campus.
