Thank you to everyone who attended the San Diego Family Fun Fest on Sunday, Feb. 9, where parents gathered great educational, health and camp resources while kids played to their heart’s content — for FREE! Highlights included:

For several years we have heard about helicopter

parents. Basically they are parents who hover over their kids and overprotect. We are now learning more about snowplow parents. Neither type of parenting allows kids to make mistakes, robbing them of the opportunity to learn how to handle difficult situations on their own. One of the jobs of a parent is to help children learn to be self-sustaining adults. Solving all their problems along the way doesn’t help them become independent. Learn about snowplow parenting on page 30. Are you one of them? If so, step back and relax. March is the beginning of our spring and summer camp season. Start generating excitement with the kids now! Read ways to prepare children for camp on page 20 and check out page 18 for unique sports that may generate interest. The Summer Olympics (starting in July) may inspire them. Let your children decide what type of camps they would like. Let them look through Family Magazine this month (and upcoming months) to see different camps that are available. Don’t decide for them. Interactive activities. Everyone had an opportunity to make a 3D Star Wars craft, learn how to control robots, shoot hoops and play an oversized game of Connect Four.

Kid-friendly attractions. The kids had a blast shooting a giant slingshot, jumping in two bounce houses, climbing through an inflatable obstacle course, flying through the air on a zipline and more.

Awesome prizes. Families visited resource booths, filled out bingo cards, and entered a drawing to win one of 10 fabulous prizes, each valued at several hundred dollars.

Help the U.S. Census Bureau Obtain a Complete Population Count The Census, which happens every 10 years, is the only official population count for the U.S. California had the highest undercount of children ages 5 and under on the 2010 Census. An undercount in 2020 could cost California up to $115 billion per year for federal programs because results help determine how much money goes to programs for local families (such as childcare, medical care, food assistance, housing and public transportation) over the next 10 years. Help the U.S. Census Bureau get an accurate count this year. When filling out the form, include all people living at your residence: Children (including babies born on or before April 1, 2020), nieces, nephews, grandchildren, foster children, friends—everyone. It doesn’t matter if people living with you are U.S. citizens or are included on the housing rental or lease agreement. The U.S. Census Bureau is bound by law to keep all information provided private. Parents and caregivers can fill out Census forms online or by phone in English, Spanish or 11 other languages. Colleges Offer Engaging STEAM Camps for Kids A little R & R is beneficial for everyone during spring and summer breaks,

but don’t overlook the numerous opportunities for children to engage in handson discovery and learn new skills in a fun camp environment. STEAM camps at local universities provide kids a unique chance to explore and problem-solve with industry professionals and students who are masters in their fields — talented mentors who share insight, expertise and guidance to campers ages 6–18. Kids get a taste of college life (without a crowded campus) and exposure to advanced art supplies, books and college memorabilia. If this sounds interesting, STEAM ahead! San Diego State University (SDSU), UC San Diego and Cal State San Marcos offer technology camps for ages 7–17, including coding, game development and design, robotics and other creative design courses taught by tech savvy staff. Dare to Dream The Olympic Games inspire kids to explore unique sports

I remember my enthusiasm for the

Olympic Games as a young girl — they made my imagination soar. I turned cartwheels, improved my handspring and created routines as I dreamt of becoming a gymnast. This summer will be buzzing with excitement about the Olympics once again. Anticipation of the Games, which start in July, might inspire kids to try a new sport. Spring and summer camps and classes offer an opportunity to try unique sports (and well-known ones) that broaden a child’s experiences, keep them active and build confidence. “Exposing children to new experiences can help them develop growth mindset,” says Certified Life Coach Bonnie Hayman at Cultivate Counseling Collective in La Mesa.

“This is the idea that we are constantly in a state of growing, and that we are always able to learn new things. Sports, creative activities, social settings and even new foods can encourage children to resist ‘I can’t’ or ‘I don’t like that’ attitudes that can hinder confidence and flexibility.” Tokyo 2020 will debut a plethora of sports, some well known and others less popular, many that are easy to find in San Diego. Go on — catch the wave of Olympic enthusiasm and enroll the kids in a sport off the beaten track.

Make a Splash Water sports, some of the most watched summer Olympic Games, enhance a child’s love for swimming and develop skills they can carry through life. Local recreation centers, universities and club pools offer opportunities

in individual sports such as diving and team sports like water polo and synchronized swimming. Outdoor water sport camps abound throughout San Diego County, surf camps are among the most popular. You’ll also find camps in Olympic sports such as sailing and rowing, which may spark a child’s interest. My son has enjoyed sailing lessons in Mission Bay where he practiced persistence and patience. Water sports teach campers water safety, proper use of equipment, and improve athleticism and swim skills. These camps are perfect for kids who feel comfortable in the water but have outgrown swim lessons.

We are excited to see kids who come in following the Olympics, they are motivated and excited to learn a sport that we love.” McCalester asserts that gymnastics teaches much more than cartwheels and flips, including healthy lifestyle, self-confidence, work ethic, respect, discipline, balance, friendship, compassion and grit. “Gymnastics provides the core strength and flexibility [needed] to transition into, and be successful in, other sports,” she says. “We’ve had kids start in gymnastics and go on to be successful in diving, track and field, cheer, rowing and more.”

They also build strength, flexibility and coordination.

Create a Healthy Mind/Body Connection Look for martial arts during the Olympics such as Judo, Karate and Taekwondo. Martial arts teach selfdiscipline, goal setting, respect, listening, and they increase self-esteem and confidence. “Taekwondo is something our family does together,” says Parker, 14, of Spring Valley. “I like setting goals and working toward my belts. It builds friendly competition and respect between my brother and me.”

“My husband and I were both gymnasts and it has been so exciting to see how the sport has evolved,” she says. “This year’s Olympics should be epic with athletes like Simone Biles who dominate the sport and push the boundaries of what the human body is capable of.

Outdoor camps such as horseback riding (known as Equestrian in the Olympics) and archery are classics. They offer young people opportunities to respect nature, gain focus and confidence while learning safe techniques to improve unique skills. 12 ways to prepare and generate excitement Spring and summer camps

are right around the corner, and there are things families can do now (and over the next couple months) to get kids prepared and excited for the experience. Use these tips to set kids up for summer adventure success: Try new foods. Plan camp cuisine nights, complete with hot dogs on a stick and s’mores. Add in new dishes kids might try at camp, such as a chili or breakfast burritos. For added fun, cook on a camp stove in the backyard. Establish routines. Campers need to get used to a schedule, so encourage kids to develop bedtime and hygiene routines, like brushing teeth and combing hair. They’ll learn responsibility and develop independence that lasts a lifetime. Reminisce about previous camp experiences. Ask kids to teach you an

activity or game they learned during a previous camp. Talk about what they liked and what could have been better. Ask questions like, what lessons did you learn? What are you looking forward to this session? If this will be your child’s first experience at camp, share your own fond memories. Get dirty. Camps can be very textural, so let kids experience some of the “feels” of camp. Whether it’s finding rocks to paint or creating with clay, they’ll get in the mood for getting messy. Get social. Encourage kids to look at camp brochures, watch online camp videos and check out camp social media pages to help build excitement. Not sure where to start? Stay tuned! San Diego Family’s online camp fair launches April 15 — full of videos to watch together. Kids may be more motivated to try something new if they see peers participating and having fun.

Do chores. Making beds, sweeping floors and washing dishes help kids learn teamwork. Everyone knows that camp “kitchen patrol” is much more exciting than chores at home, but kids still need to learn how to do it. Have a family campout. For kids who are going to overnight camp, plan a family camping trip so they experience nature and sleeping outdoors. Even camping in the backyard provides a different experience that is exciting and liberating for kids who have only slept in a bedroom. Plan a visit. Many camp programs have open house events to familiarize kids and parents with the camp atmosphere. “Visiting the location of the camp prior to their first day helps build excitement and settle fears for children who are nervous about going to a new place,” says Kris Mooney, director of education at the Fleet Science Center. “This also gives parents a chance to ask where the camp dropoff location will be.” If no open house event is offered, consider planning a visit to potential camp venues on your own (some are held at local attractions, museums and parks). Snowplow Parenting

What is it and how does it hurt kids? While so-called helicopter parents hover and micromanage, snowplow parents take protective parenting a step further by removing obstacles to their child’s “success.” Driving your children to school

when they miss the bus. Switching soccer teams after a disagreement with the coach. Polishing homework projects and admissions essays. What do these scenarios have in common? They’re examples of snowplow parenting, the increasingly common practice of removing obstacles from a child’s path. If you’ve unwittingly adopted a few of these practices, you’re not alone. Per a recent New York Times poll, up to three-quarters of parents admit to snowplow behaviors. From ensuring that a child gets his preferred teacher, locker or class schedule to navigating all classroom and playground conflicts, parents who snowplow think they’re clearing the way for achievement. In fact,

snowplowing prevents children from learning how to solve problems, resolve conflict, and manage relationships, robbing them of the resourcefulness, resilience and life skills that breed maturity, independence and success. Sound familiar? Here’s how to turn your snowplow around.

Small Snowplows: ages 0–5 In younger children, snowplow parenting can be steering your child away from scenarios that are uncomfortable or stir strong feelings (think play dates and playground politics). “Research shows that children who have been overly protected from their own emotions lack a sense of agency over their own lives and are more prone to develop unfulfilling relationships in the future,” says Kamini Wood, certified life and resilience coach for girls, teens and young women. Action point: Rather than helping your little one avoid every distressing moment, encourage an “I can handle it” mindset. Consider Laurie Wright’s Mindful Mantras books for ageappropriate messages that build resilience and emotional regulation.

Skill Building: ages 6–12 The ability to stand up for oneself is important to master, especially for school-age kids. They’ll have plenty of opportunities for practice in this age range, between homework responsibilities, friend drama and sports scuffles. When snowplow parents step in to smooth over conflicts before children can resolve them independently, they unwittingly prevent kids from learning to self-advocate, says clinical psychologist and mother of four Michelle P. Maidenberg, Ph.D. In addition, parents should avoid going out of their way to prevent natural consequences. For instance, leaving work to drop off forgotten homework so a child doesn’t experience the embarrassment, regret or frustration of missing a deadline prevents them from learning how to cope when these feelings arise. It also robs them of the motivation to not let it happen again when they know they’ll be “rescued.” Action point: To effectively walk the line between snowplow parent and strong advocate, first ask yourself whether the situation in question puts your child’s physical or emotional

safety at risk. When the answer is yes, as with bullying, parents should get involved. If the answer is no—for example, your child doesn’t like their assigned locker partner’s messy habits or a new teacher’s grading policies—the situation calls for parental guidance, rather than intervention. Helping a frustrated or disappointed child determine how to navigate a situation, then stepping back as they implement the plan, ultimately serves them better than engineering a swift resolution yourself.

Machine Wars: ages 13–18 Snowplow parents often shift into high gear during the teen years because the stakes are higher, says Maidenberg. “Our parenting is directly impacted by what’s going on in our society culturally, politically, socially and economically,” she says. “Today’s children are facing more volatility with higher youth suicide rates, the opioid and vaping epidemic, and increasing competition to get into college.” Wellmeaning parents who want to relieve some of this pressure can easily slip into snowplow parenting. This starts with innocuous behaviors like becoming a child’s alarm clock, repeatedly reminding them of deadlines and assignments, and using their own connections to land coveted internships or jobs for their offspring. Action point: Parents can support a teen’s success without driving a snowplow. Establish a weekly check-in to touch base about homework, test prep and work responsibilities. Give your teen the tools to stay organized, like a wall calendar, digital reminder app or a planner. Don’t be afraid to let kids make mistakes. When problems arise, employ a simple phrase to keep the snowplow at bay. As the father of a son with Down Syndrome, an uncle to a child with Asperger’s Syndrome, and a friend to parents with struggling children, Jon paired his personal experience with his passion for helping people and his entrepreneurial roots to open the doors of Brain Balance of San Diego. Brain Balance serves struggling children with an integrative and holistic approach. “We’re bringing a much needed nonmedical solution to a widespread problem affecting families of all walks of life,” Jon said. Through a personalized combination of in-center sessions, at-home activities, and a nutrition program, Brain Balance addresses the individual gaps for each child to improve focus, behavior, social skills, sensory processing, and academics. “The team cares deeply about our students and, as each child is different, we discuss strategies for each one of them to create the biggest impact possible,” Jon acknowledged. Backed by a program developed and continuously improved by research that has been proven successful on over 30,000 children, the Brain Balance team creates individualized

plans to strengthen the child’s weaker areas, including sensory engagement, core muscle strength and coordination, eye tracking, auditory processing, academic guidance, and nutritional guidance. “Gaps and holes in development result in gaps and holes in behavior, academics, socialization, and confidence,” Jon explained. “Our program focuses on improving the foundation of development and brain connectivity rather than masking or coping with symptoms.” Those symptoms can range from lack of focus and meltdowns to lack of confidence and social struggles. Jon and his team work mainly with children from Pre-K to 12th grade with or without a diagnosis and also offer a new program for college-age students. “I’d like to encourage parents to challenge the system,” Jon shared. “A label doesn’t necessarily help the child and medication is only a coping strategy that in the long run doesn’t provide any improvement while oftentimes affects the development of the child.” Since opening their doors earlier this year, Jon and his team are experiencing the results. “Whenever our parents share their stories on how things are better at school, at home, making new friends, doing things they would have never imagined in the past, we get so pumped up that it makes us want to work
