Inside Scoop

When it comes to dining out with the family, San Diego offers the tastiest tapas, treats and savory eats, no matter the palate or budget.

Let’s talk about tacos. Thanks to our proximity to Baja California, San Diego proudly claims the best fish tacos this side of the border. Venture over to Mitch’s Seafood in Point Loma or Oscar’s Mexican Seafood for some of the best in the biz. Not a fish fan? San Diego specializes in all kinds of tacos—from birria or carne asada to al pastor or vegan, and everything in between. We recommend forging your own taco trail to discover the best spots in town. Local favorites include The Taco Stand, Tacos El Gordo and Las Cuatro Milpas. Even Rubio’s Coastal Grill has a loyal following (the first-ever location is in Pacific Beach).

If Mexican cuisine reigns supreme in San Diego, Asian food comes in a close second. Discover a plethora of options in Kearny Mesa’s Convoy District, Linda Vista, Mira Mesa and South Bay. Enjoy traditional Vietnamese Banh Mi at K Sandwiches, slurp savory Japanese ramen at Menya Ultra, dive into delicious Taiwanese dumplings at Din Tai Fung or enjoy Chinese specialties at Fortunate Son.

Looking for kid-centric cuisine? A few favorites include 1) Corvette Diner for the complete 50’s diner experience, including costumed wait staff, malted milkshakes and a gamers arcade, 2) Flap Your Jacks in North Park for make-your-own customizable pancakes and Brioche French Toast, and 3) Hodad’s for— dare we say it—the best burger in SoCal since 1969.
