Learning starts with exploring. That’s why we’re opening The Backyard, a brand-new space for our youngest guests. We’re bringing the outdoors in: little learners can play around an oak tree, hunt for hidden backyard animals, climb a giant ladybug, or cozy
up with a book in the potting shed. Visitors still perfecting their crawling skills can safely explore in the soft, protected play area. Included with admission and free for members. Visit sdnat.org/thebackyard for details.

Our San Diego
Publisher’s Letter
Families
Summer, Summer, Summer On July 4 we celebrate Independence Day, a day of
celebration as a nation since 1776, even though it became a federal holiday in 1941. Jenny Burman, our calendar editor, has been busy collecting the best celebrations, parades and fireworks displays, which are highlighted on page 32. Wear your patriotic shirt, decorate your home, fly your American flag and be proud that we live in a great country. See page 46 for craft ideas. Our family usually goes to the Fourth of July parade in Scripps Ranch in the morning; then we plan to watch fireworks from the USS Midway Museum (we haven’t been since the 20-second “bust” in 2012). A couple months ago you voted for more than 30 Best of Family Fun favorites. The tallies are in and we’re announcing the winners in this issue. Find them starting on page 20 and visit www.SanDiegoFamily.com/things-to-do/bestof-family-fun for more. Thank you all for voting! We had an outstanding response from our readers and social media followers. Congratulations to the winners and top picks! Be proud of your businesses. It’s great to be recognized by San Diego Family readers for the services you provide. Summer is a time for the kids to relax. But we don’t want them to forget about reading. Turn to page 16 for a list of books that have been made into movies. Read a book, watch the movie and then talk about both. There is a list of talking points to help start the conversation. Have a great summer! Relax and enjoy your family!

What are your plans for July 4? Adrienne Sigeti, editorial assistant I’ve always wanted to go to the San Diego County Fair on the Fourth of July (the last day of the fair!) to experience the Hometown Heroes parade, fireworks show and other patriotic festivities. This year they’re showing Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory in the Paddock after the fireworks. Fun! Jenny Burman, calendar editor Our family is celebrating Independence Day out of town. We plan to go museum hopping and have a picnic at a park complete with live music and a fireworks show. What’s the Fourth of July without fireworks, right? Lisa Gipson, managing editor This year we’ll be in Portland, enjoying the sunset at 9 pm and watching fireworks around 11 pm (yep, the days are really long up there!). We’ll also stop at the original Salt & Straw (obviously) for a waffle cone of their epic ice cream.
Diana Buell, contributing crafter Every year we get together with neighbors, have a potluck barbecue and watch fireworks from the backyard. If the skies are clear, we can see at least six shows simultaneously, the closest one being Mira Mesa.

Lisa Gipson Finding Good Shaved Ice, Anyone?
Have you ever wished you could make light, fluffy snow cones like the stuff they make in Hawaii? Well, now you can. Little Snowie 2 is a professional-grade ice shaver that’s small enough for home and light enough to transport to the pool, park or a party. Plus, it cranks out 8 ounces of shaved ice in less than five seconds! No exposed blades make it safe enough for children (ages 8+) to operate: simply push the top. Try Little Snowie’s syrups (our favorite is coconut!) or add your own. Available on Amazon.
Happy 70th Anniversary to San Diego Junior Theatre!
Perhaps you remember an article we published in November about San Diego dad and Navy Chief Johnathon Stone. Now he has a book! When Johnathon’s wife Sarah was diagnosed with a rare terminal cancer, he knew he had to make the most of every moment. #TeamStone always believed there is good in every day. Finding Good is a firsthand look at Sarah and Johnathon’s journey, from high school sweethearts to raising four children and everything in between. It’s an inspirational story of spreading hope through acts of kindness, even while handling life’s ups and downs. Get the book on Amazon. Read our article in the Nov. 2017 issue at www .sandiegofamily.com/magazines/sandiego-family-digital-issues.

50 Books/Movies to Motivate Kids to Read
While parents usually want to
limit screen time, movies may be the exception that encourages kids to read during the summer when learning losses often occur. Make reading and movie nights a family affair! Choose books that have been made into movies and set a timeframe for kids—or the family—to read together first. Plan a movie night at the conclusion of each book to celebrate. Here are 50 books in a variety of genres that have been made into movies (there are many others). Check book and movie reviews online to determine if content is appropriate for your family. Many of the movies that go with these books can be checked out at the library for free. Most importantly, be involved and make it fun!

Book Talk Watching movies and reading books together gives parents the opportunity to have meaningful conversations with kids. Ask questions such as: • Which was better, the book or the movie? • What were some differences between the book and the movie? Did you like the changes? • Did the movie cast capture the personalities of the book characters? • How would you make the movie (or book) different? • If you could pick any book to make into a movie, what would it be and why? Which actors and actresses would you cast in the movie? Would you change the beginning, middle or ending?

2018 WINNERS
Thank you, San Diego Family Magazine readers, fans and followers
San Diego’s Best Hidden Gem Some of San Diego’s favorite hidden gems are hiding in plain sight! Take to the sky and you’ll see that the Coronado Sand Dunes actually line up to spell out the word “Coronado.” Other local favorites include the seven bridges walk through Balboa Park and it’s surrounding communities as well as Barrio Logan, a neighborhood known for Chicano Park and delicious Mexican eats.
Best Local Breakfast Spot Photo courtesy of Lisa Gipson
Don’t let the funny name fool you, Hash House A Go Go takes breakfast to the next level with outrageously large portions of Midwest-inspired dishes like Sage Fried Chicken and Waffles and Biscuits and Gravy. Other San Diego breakfast favorites include The Mission with unique offerings like the Soy Chorizo Burrito and Breakfast Republic, best known for its French Toast Sampler.
Best Live Performances for Families What’s better than dressing like your favorite princess or Disney character and seeing them perform live in Disney on Ice? Not much when you’re a kid! Other fabulous live performances for families include the whimsical holiday classic Dr. Seuss’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas at The Old Globe and concerts by the wildly popular band, Hullabaloo. Best Educational Outing It’s no secret that learning and playing go hand in hand. At the Fleet Science Center, budding scientists explore 100 interactive exhibits covering topics from outer space to the human body. At the Birch Aquarium, kids learn about marine life with hands-on interactions at the touch pool while at the Natural History Museum little archeologists discover real Mastodon bones from the Ice Age! Photo courtesy of Cherie Gough
Best Place For An Animal Encounter Watch a cheetah run up to 70 miles per hour at the Safari Park or meet an adorable animal ambassador like Xena, a two-toed sloth, at the San Diego Zoo. Looking for an underwater animal adventure? Head to SeaWorld where visitors can swim with the dolphins and even feed a Beluga whale.

Easy Ways Kids Can Be Conservation Heroes From July 9-31, the public can nominate volunteers of all ages for a Cox Conserves Heroes award, which recognizes those in their community who are helping to preserve, protect and enhance public spaces for all to enjoy. The Cox Conserves Heroes awards program was launched by Cox Communications to not only recognize local environmental heroes and provide grants to the heroes’ environmental nonprofits of choice, but to also inspire others to help protect the Earth for future generations.

Regardless of a child’s age, there are simple steps families can take all year long that teach their children about environmental stewardship and being a conservation hero, which also help Mother Earth and impact their own households. Plant a Tree. Deforestation contributes to the extinction of species, as well as greenhouse gas emissions, which increase the heat in the atmosphere, leading to global warming. Planting a tree is a fun way for kids to help fight climate change. Donate Your Electronics to Families in Need. Electronics need to be recycled, so why not save the planet and help kids who don’t have a computer at home for their education? Donate your old computers, laptops and monitors to Computers2SanDiegoKids, a nonprofit organization that refurbishes them and partners with companies like Cox
Communications to bring computers and Internet to families in need. To donate, visit http://www.c2sdk.org/. Adjust Your Thermostat by Two Degrees. Save energy just by turning your thermostat up two degrees during summer and down two degrees during winter. With home automation systems such as Cox Homelife, you can easily adjust your thermostat from your smartphone while away from home. Visit www.cox.com/residential/homelife. Unplug Energy Vampires. If you’re not using a gaming system, cell phone charger or laptop, don’t forget to unplug it or the power strip. This will help save thousands of pounds of carbon dioxide a year. Carbon dioxide is the greenhouse gas most produced by humans, and the biggest cause of global warming, according to scientists. Cox Homelife includes automation features that allow you to switch your lights on and off using your smartphone while you’re away from home – so now you don’t have to leave the lights on all day for your pets just because you won’t be home until dark.
Happy Kids Hang Out Here You can go to work confident your child is safe, happy, having fun and thriving with our teachers. We help your child develop excitement and curiosity about learning, plus strong self-esteem that will last a lifetime.

Is your GATE child bored at school? Are you tired of the homework fight every night? Does your quirky kid struggle to be accepted?
Renaissance Village Academy is a private, non-religious full-time school serving gifted, profoundly gifted, doubly-gifted, and highly motivated children in grades K-8. Our schedule is designed for the working parent, so homework is done with credentialed teachers. ATTENTION PRE-K PARENTS! Is your child “too young” for kindergarten, but ready for school? If she’s at least 4 yrs, 9 mos., consider RVA as an academic alternative for your bright youngster.
