Our San Diego
Publisher’s Letter
Families
Celebrations, Camps and Father’s Day This month our family is celebrating the graduations
of three of my grandsons: Carter is graduating from high school, Tyler is promoting from middle school, and Grant is promoting from elementary school. Time goes so fast! I want to congratulate them and wish them the best. They are great kids! The June issue of Family Magazine covers celebrations of all kinds. Look through the magazine and visit www .sandiegofamily.com to find tons of fun party ideas. Learn about fairy parties on page 24. Need ideas for gifts? Check out the summer toys on page 26. Summer vacations are about to start. Enjoy fun family outings with brand new amusement park rides here in San Diego and a few miles north in Orange County and LA. Read about the exciting rides on page 28. Our calendar editor, Jenny, has highlighted summer concerts on page 42. It is fun to take a picnic along and eat while listening to music. When you visit spots in our calendar, be sure to let business owners know you saw their event in Family Magazine. Summer is a perfect time for the kids to go to camp. There are still openings in the camps you find in this issue. Also check out our Virtual Camp Fair at www .sandiegofamily.com. It is open 24/7 until June 15. Dad’s Day is June 17. It is a wonderful time to celebrate and have fun with him. Thank you to all the fathers who work hard and support loving families. Happy Father’s Day!
What’s your best party planning tip? Anne Malinoski, writer Everyone (including my kid) has dietary restrictions these days. Stressed about what to serve? Try a baked potato bar. Keep the toppings separate, so guests can adjust to their own needs. Offer sweet potatoes for those on a paleo diet, and everyone will be covered. Tony Andrews, marketing representative Pay attention to details (decorations, food, invitation list) because little things make a big impact. If the party is honoring someone specific, do things that will make that person feel special, even if no one else appreciates it (such as, serve their favorite ice cream, even if it’s rum raisin!).
Cherie Gough, writer I always ask a good friend to take photos at my kids’ birthday parties. That way I get to be in the moment and relive the memories later.

Managing Food Allergies at Camp
Cherie Gough
How to keep kids healthy and happy Mention summer camp and kids
get excited about activities, art, s’mores and friends. But for parents of kids with food allergies, the prospect of sending a child to day camp or overnight camp can be overwhelming. Rather than letting uncertainty take control, take comfort knowing that camps are becoming more inclusive so that kids with food allergies experience the classic fun of summer camp with their peers. Many camps are aware of increasing allergies and provide in-depth safety training for staff. “We take allergies very seriously,” says Karla Nafarrate, communications manager at Fleet Science Center. “In our online form, we ask that parents elaborate about their camper’s allergy. This information is shared with the camp administrative team and the educator who will be teaching.” Some camps, like the ones at The Natural History Museum (theNAT), provide nutfree programming to ensure the safety of all children. If you’re considering camp for a child with a food allergy, use these tips to make camp a smooth process (read the full article at www.SanDiegoFamily.com/ parenting/big-kid/1562).
Getting Started: Choose the Right Camp • Assess your comfort level with different types of camps: Is day camp more appropriate or is your child ready for sleepaway camp?
16 • SanDiegofamily.com • June 2018
Plan Ahead: Communicate On camp registration paperwork, include additional information such as a letter describing the severity of your child’s allergy and/or an allergy action plan. “Even a couple extra sentences help us ensure a smooth, great week of camp,” says Griffith. Find a template at www.foodallergy.org/life-withfood-allergies/food-allergy-anaphylaxisemergency-care-plan.
Two Weeks Before Camp: Medications & Self-Care Replace medications that have expired and be sure there is enough to last through camp, especially since some are held in remote locations. • Do your research. What camps interest your child? Use our camp listing and Virtual Camp Fair to narrow choices. Find both at www.SanDiegoFamily.com.
Review with your child how to self-manage food allergies. The camper should know: • Safe and unsafe foods • Ways to avoid exposure to unsafe foods
• Speak with camp directors. Phone calls create a connection to gauge a camp’s willingness and ability to handle your child’s needs. Ask lots of questions to ensure camps meet your safety criteria and comfort level.
• Symptoms of allergic reactions
• Narrow list to camps that can accommodate your child’s needs.
Make a follow-up call to the camp director. Check in to be sure all staff responsible for your child (even lifeguards, drivers, cafeteria workers) will be informed of allergies.
• Look for a camp that is well prepared and has a fully trained staff. Trust your gut. “We work really hard to be inclusive, to not label a child, and use our awareness and training to just let them have a great week,” says Christine Griffith, family programs manager at theNAT. Questions to ask • Do campers bring their own lunch and snacks? • Is there a safe place to eat, away from allergens? • Do all kids wash hands before and after eating to avoid cross-contamination? • Will there be crafts using potential allergens—such as bird feeders made with peanut butter or macaroni necklaces? If so, can a substitution be made? • Who handles medical care at camp? Are they trained to use an epinephrine autoinjector such as an EpiPen?
• How to speak up about a possible allergic reactions or an unsafe food situation • How to read a food label • How to use an Epi-pen, if necessary
You’ve done your homework and chosen the best camp possible to prepare for an awesome week. Relax and allow yourself and your child to have fun and enjoy the ride.

What’s
GLAMPING,
you say? Just north of Santa Barbara , in the heart of the Santa Ynez Valley, is the small town of Buellton. Perhaps you know Buellton as the “home of the split pea” as it’s impossible to travel Highway 101 without seeing billboards announcing Pea Soup Andersen’s. Not as well-known is Flying Flags RV Resort & Campground, a mecca of awesomeness for glampers and outdoor play enthusiasts.
Well worth the five-hour drive from San Diego, the beautifully maintained Flying Flags RV Resort & Campground (www.flyingflags.com) offers a variety of unique glamping options: luxurious safari tents, renovated vintage airstream trailers, and adorable furnished cottages and cabins. Plus, everyone receives freshly baked cookies at check-in (as if we needed more convincing). The surf-themed cabins have kid-sized bunk beds, in addition to a full-sized futon and queen bed. There are even teardrop camper trailers available in an area affectionately dubbed “Canned Ham Village”, perfect for parent/child bonding as they only sleep two. For the ultimate glamping experience, we stayed in Safari Village, which consists of nine safari tents and six shared bathrooms (each with a
A Glamping Adventure in
Buellton
It’s like camping, but there’s nothing rustic about it. Combining the words “glamorous” and “camping”, glamping includes the comforts of home (beds, electricity, indoor plumbing). None of this sleeping-on-the-ground stuff. Not that sleeping on the ground is bad; everyone should do it at least once!
private sink, toilet and shower). Safari tents feature very comfortable beds, air conditioners (heaters, if needed), a couch, TV, microwave, refrigerator, outdoor kitchen, covered patio table, and all dishes and kitchenware needed for cooking! Glamping in safari tents is amazing—a tenting experience I can get into. During the day, kids ride bikes and scooters (brought from home) through the pet-friendly property, swim in one of two resort-style swimming pools, challenge friends to bocce ball and horseshoes, and play on the playground. At night, families sit under the stars and roast marshmallows over a fire pit (many sites have their own). If you don’t feel like cooking, grab a meal at the onsite Campfire Café or have a gourmet sausage from the Santa Ynez Sausage Co. airstream trailer—a cute venue with delicious food to enjoy at picnic tables. Don’t miss the Flying Flags barbecue every Friday night (first come, first served), featuring tritip, ribs, chicken, a variety of rotating
side dishes and dessert. Eat around the campfire or take dinner back to your cabin, safari tent or RV. There’s no need to leave the Flying Flags property, but there are fun things to do in the area that families love! cont. on p. 20

Mendenhall Museum www.mendenhallmuseum.com I wasn’t an automobile memorabilia enthusiast until I became an “American Pickers” junkie a few years ago. The thought of checking out antique gasoline pumps and porcelain road signs just like Mike and Frank on TV was exciting to my whole family. The Mendenhall Museum is literally a hidden gem— located behind an unassuming alley fence, right across the street from Flying Flags. On the other side of the gate is one of the largest petroliana collections on the West Coast—a colorful feast for the eyes! Every inch is covered with cool antiques, vehicles, gas station and car memorabilia, and more. Started over 50 years ago by the late Jack Mendenhall, the collection is now maintained by his son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Vickie Mendenhall, who live on the property. Even if you’re passing through the Central Coast on Highway 101, it’s worth a stop in Buellton. Reservations required—no group is too small.

Explore Santa Ynez Valley by Bike www.pedegoelectricbikes.com/ dealers/los-olivos Don’t even think about going to Buellton without exploring the backroads of the Santa Ynez Valley (even if you drive). Absolutely gorgeous! The best way to tour the area is via electric bike. Not only are electric bikes super fun, but they make navigating hills more manageable. Pedal when you want, use electricity when necessary— it’s the best of both worlds while enjoying fresh air and stunning landscapes. As our family cruised around, we happened upon a family of bison! It was definitely a highlight of our trip.

Fairies capture the magic and charm of summertime. What better way to kick off summer than a celebration with fairies, elves and pixies fluttering and poking mischief around every corner? We’ve found some outstanding local opportunities to bring your fairy celebration—big or small—to life.
Curious Gardens at Myrtle Creek Botanical Gardens
Storybook Gardens www.storybookgardensd.com 410-596-4409 Using upcycled materials and water-wise plants, Storybook Gardens brings the enchantment of fairy gardening to your event. Owner Melissa sets up stations where each child adds items to their garden until it is just right. Melissa provides the pots, soil, plants and miniature décor, along with her bubbly personality. Got boys? She tailors parties so that children can add farm and construction vehicles instead of traditional fairy sparkle to their garden, if desired. If you’re planning a party of 10 or fewer, Melissa will host your gathering in her beautiful backyard in Carmel Valley. She’ll lead your fairies on a nature exploration, hunt for objects to include in their miniature storybook land and have children write an imaginative description of their gardens. Storybook Gardens is affordable and travels to events throughout the county. Melissa is patient and creative, and has a background in education.

www.discovermyrtlecreek.com 760-728-5340 Take a small group to Curious Gardens at Myrtle Creek to celebrate summer’s arrival or rent the garden for a party. The newly-renovated space in Fallbrook is a wonderland come to life. Offering the largest fairy garden workshop space in the country, Curious Gardens is a 5,000-square-foot Southern Plantation-style house with indoor/outdoor spaces surrounded by blossoms, butterflies and birds. Upon entering Curious Gardens, the $5 entrance fee is converted to “Curious Cash” which can be used toward the purchase of fairy garden items. Choose from plants, moss, soil, rocks and thousands of figurines. A garden designer is available to help with planting and answer questions. The interactive workshop is a creative way for children and parents to create lasting memories. Reservations encouraged. If holding your own festivities in this delightful natural setting, Curious Gardens will include food, tables and chairs, a fairy garden workshop, and access to Happy Goat Mountain (a rescue goat habitat). The grounds feature several charming spaces, including a butterfly garden, green house, bird sanctuary and carriage house. Why should kids have all the fun? The venue is perfect for adult gatherings, too. Reserve space in advance for private parties.

Red Hot Summer for Wild Ride
Connor Gilbert
s
2018 is shaping up to be the best year yet for California amusement parks. Southern California is getting five new rides! Here are the exciting new attractions that are sure to heat up your summer vacation:
Photo credit: Mike Aguilera/SeaWorld San Diego
Electric Eel at SeaWorld San Diego www.seaworld.com/ san-diego/rides/ electric-eel The first new roller coaster for SeaWorld in six years, Electric Eel aims to be the tallest, fastest and craziest ride in San Diego. The super speed launch coaster, located near Journey to Atlantis, features the only inversion in a San Diego coaster. The attraction starts with a mild launch that doesn’t gain enough speed to take riders to the top. As they come back down, riders are launched backwards, but still with not enough force to push them all the way up. During the third and final launch, a maximum speed of 62 miles per hour is reached. At the top, a slow-motion inversion provides a fantastic out-of-your-seat experience. Zoom through a non-inverting loop before the ride ends. Be sure to make Electric Eel part of your summer plans.
HangTime at Knott’s Berry Farm
www.knotts.com/explore/hangtime Hold on to your shoulder restraint because HangTime at Knott’s Berry Farm is a wild one! This exhilarating coaster is the first on the west coast to have a vertical drop in excess of 90 degrees. The surfing-themed ride starts with a unique 90-degree lift hill, followed by a brake that holds riders over a colossal drop for four seconds of pure fear, then plummets down a 96-degree drop and speeds through five inversions. HangTime pays homage to defunct Knott’s coasters by featuring Boomerang’s signature cobra roll and Corkscrew’s signature, well, corkscrew. Plans include dazzling lights, making the ride more spectacular at night. A game changer for California attractions, HangTime may be one of the best experiences in the park.
CraZanity at Six Flags Magic Mountain www.sixflags.com/magicmountain/whats-new Soar up to 172 feet in the air on the tallest pendulum swing ride in the world! Located in the new Boardwalk area of Six Flags Magic Mountain, CraZanity reaches speeds of up to 75 miles per hour. Swing back and forth while spinning counter-clockwise—it’s sure to be a disorienting experience. The Boardwalk will also feature new dining options, carnival games and sleek, colorful bumper cars. Plan a road trip to north L.A. when it debuts this summer! cont. on p. 30
