STOMP, CHOMP AND ROAR It’s a Dinosaur Party!
Pam Molnar
Since the “caveman” days, dinosaurs have fascinated children — especially boys. Dinosaurs were big, loud and most likely chewed with their mouths open. What’s not to like? If you have a caveboy (or girl) at home, treat him to a dinosaur-themed party that will be remembered for the next million years.
Activities
1. Dino Egg Hunt — Fill plastic eggs with dinosaur stickers, stamps, toys or numbers to turn in for larger prizes. Oriental Trading and Party City offer a large selection of dinosaur items. Hide eggs around the yard for guests to find. Consider assigning egg colors to each guest to make sure they get an even number of prizes. 2. Make Fossil Party Favors Mix together 1 cup used coffee grounds, ½ cup cold coffee, 1 cup flour and ½ cup salt. Divide into four pieces and flatten out with hands. Press shells, sticks, leaves, plastic dinosaurs, etc. into coffee ground “fossil” dough. Guests can take them home in plastic bags. Let dry 3–4 days before handling. 3. The Excavator — Mix plaster of paris and pour into old plastic containers or paper milk cartons. Insert dinosaur toys to be excavated and let dry overnight (or per directions). Let kids use small hammers to chip away and discover what is inside. Don’t forget eye protection!
4 • SanDiegofamily.com • Party Guide 2019
Games
1. Cave People Stomp — Blow up balloons and attach to paper plates with tape. You can add faces, yarn hair or paper arms to make them look like cave people if you wish. On “Go,” the dinosaurs (kids) stomp as many cave people (balloons) as they can. Optional: Make “dinosaur feet” out of cardboard ahead of time and tie them to the players’ shoes before they start stomping. 2. Hungry Dinosaurs — For this game, you will need a skateboard for every two players, oven mitts and a bunch of small bouncy balls. Players pair up: One on a skateboard on his belly (the dinosaur) and the other behind him holding his feet like a wheelbarrow and pushing him around. Balls are placed on the ground in the middle of the room. The players on the skateboards put oven mitts on. On “Go,” teams go back and forth into the circle collecting as many balls as possible. When the “dinosaur’s” hands are full, empty balls into a bowl outside the circle before going back in to collect more. Play the game twice so each child gets to be the dinosaur. 3. Hot Lava — Put red plastic tablecloths on the floor. Set up an obstacle course made of stepping stones, bricks, low stools, pillows, etc. Guests climb, step, jump on the items, but cannot step on the hot lava. Play again using only colored paper to step on and have the kids play in teams — one blindfolded while the other gives directions to help his partner to safety.
Food
1. Chicken (baby pterodactyl) legs or wings are a real crowd pleaser! Make your own, order take-out or prepare frozen dinosaur chicken nuggets. 2. Mini Nacho Volcanoes — Use a 12-oz. brown paper cup (Amazon has coffee cups that work great) and cut off the bottom half inch. Place bottom side up and insert a 5-oz. plastic snack cup inside. Fill cup with red salsa or nacho cheese and spill some over the edge of the volcano. Serve on an individual dish surrounded by dinosaur scales (chips).
3. Lava Cake — Make your favorite chocolate cupcake recipe and allow cupcakes to cool. Using a paring knife, cut out the center about halfway into the cupcake preserving the center piece. Fill with hot fudge sauce or Nutella (mixed 4:1 with milk). Replace the top and cover the cupcake with piped red icing. 4. Dino Juice – The easiest version of this is to buy Hawaiian Punch Green Berry Rush flavor. But there are many recipes online if you want to make your own green punch. v Pam Molnar is a freelance writer and mother of two girls and a former caveboy.

PARTY MANNERS MATTER
Janeen Lewis
Tips for hosts and guests
When children use good manners, people want to be around them. Birthday parties (and other social engagements) are ideal opportunities to teach children party etiquette and graciousness that goes beyond rules. Whether your child is a host or guest, make teaching party etiquette fun. Stage a mock party so your family can role play, using these helpful hints. BE DISCREET Hosts If possible, consider inviting the entire team or class. If that won’t work, snail
12 • SanDiegofamily.com • Party Guide 2019
mail or email invitations and teach your kids not to talk about the party in front of children who aren’t invited. But be realistic — it’s hard for a preschooler or kindergartner not to talk about her party. If you start having discussions about being discreet when children are young, they will handle these situations appropriately as they get older. Guests It is disappointing when your child is not invited to a party, but disappointment provides an opportunity to coach kids through early let downs in life. Explain that she may be invited to the next party when someone else is not. If your child does receive an invitation, teach her to treat the matter with the same delicacy she did as the host. Tell her not to talk
about it in front of other kids since she doesn’t know who else is on the invitation list.
BE CLEAR WITH BOUNDARIES Hosts Be clear about party guidelines in the invitation, so people know what to expect. State the time, date and place, and let parents know if they can drop kids off or if they should stay. Let them know if adults are invited to eat, too. Add a note about whether or not siblings may attend. Be clear about when activities are happening, so the party progresses in an orderly manner. If gifts are opened at the party, put them away so kids aren’t tempted to play with gifts, which interrupts planned activities.
Guests If it is a home party, stay in the areas the host is in. Don’t go into other rooms without permission. If the party is at an off-site venue, make sure your child follows the rules. If the host doesn’t specify party guidelines in the invitation, never assume. For instance, don’t bring your entire family (or even siblings) without asking the host.
BE SOCIAL Hosts Teach birthday kids to be gracious hosts: Meet and greet each child as they arrive, play with everyone so no one feels left out, say goodbye, and thank guests for coming when the party is over. Guests Let the host know when you arrive. Make an effort to play with the host and other guests; don’t exclude anyone. When you are ready to leave, be sure to tell the hosts goodbye and thank you.
BE GIVING Hosts Teach your child not to expect gifts, but if she does receive them, thank each guest who gives a gift and stay positive about every item, even if it’s something she already has or doesn’t like. If you decide to forgo gifts, write “No gifts, please” on the invitation. Favor bags aren’t necessary, but giving each guest a special memento is a thoughtful gesture. Some parents may prefer their children don’t get candy and small plastic items. Instead, your child could choose a memorable item to pass out to guests. For example, packets of flower seeds for a spring party or an inexpensive ornament if the party is close to Christmas. My daughter’s favorite favor was a peacock feather she received at a kindergarten party. Guests Unless the invitation includes the message “No gifts, please,” bring a gift. It doesn’t have to be expensive and can even be handmade. Many parents will be grateful to not receive another toy.
Consider also making a card with a heartfelt message written by your child.
BE COURTEOUS Hosts Thank every guest for coming and for bringing a gift, no matter how big or small. Have your kids write thank-you notes after the party. Use the same discretion when passing out thank-you notes as you did with invitations. Guests Always RSVP. Be on time, but if you’re going to be late, call to let the host know. If you have to cancel, tell the host as soon as possible, so she can plan food and favors. Birthday party manners are a gateway for graciousness as your child grows into a teen and adult. Embrace opportunities to teach children how to socialize, and hopefully they will be invited to more celebrations with friends as they grow older. v Janeen Lewis is a freelance journalist and mom. Your child’s next birthday is fast approaching and
you’re wondering where to hold the party. Perhaps the thought of having it at home makes you break out in a cold sweat. Maybe it is simply not an option. As the mother of two kids, now a teen and tween, I’ve spent over a decade attending or hosting birthday parties at a couple dozen different spots. There truly is a place for everyone and every budget. Check out this list of 25 awesome and unique ideas for your child’s next birthday party or family celebration and get ready to have some fun! • Take your group to a local sporting event, such as a Minor League Baseball game. The closest team to San Diego is Lake Elsinore Storm. • Have an animal encounter at the San Diego Zoo or Wild Wonders. • Go to a community swimming pool, water park or splash pad. • Rent a pavilion at a local park for “home base” while the kids run around. • Piggyback your party on a special event, such as an outdoor summer concert or movie in the park. • Take a walk or hike at a nature center or botanical garden, where you can learn about the outdoors and celebrate with a picnic. • Visit a fire station. Most local fire stations offer short tours for kids, let them climb on the trucks, and take photos with firefighters. Have a “Plan B” because the visit will be cut short in the event of an actual fire. • Pick seasonal fruit at an orchard or visit a pumpkin patch in the fall.

Host a Glamping Party!
Pam Molnar
A glamorous camping-themed sleepover If your child loves the idea of camping,
but prefers to be surrounded by the comforts of home, glamping is an awesome alternative. Glampers can sleep in a “glampground” in the backyard — or even indoors when Mother Nature doesn’t cooperate. Here are tips to host a fabulous glamping party.
Decorations Dress up a tent with a floor of thick blankets and colorful pillows. Inflatable pool floats make nice beds, especially when covered in soft quilts. Camouflage tent walls with fabric draped from the ceiling and tied back against the wall. For a shabby-chic look, purchase fabric or sheets from a thrift

store. Dangle white holiday lights from the ceiling and around the doorframe to give the tent a soft glow. Set a low table under the stars, using big pillows for chairs, for crafting and dining. Decorate it for dinner with mismatched china, flatware and a beautiful tablecloth — great thrift
store finds (or rent from a party supply store). When it’s time for crafts, switch to plastic, disposable table coverings.
Crafts 1. Bohemian Lanterns — Paint the outside of mason jars with a 1:6 mixture of paint to water. It will give
3. Dream Catchers — Kits (available online) come with everything needed to make a dream catcher (including beads and feathers). Consider offering guests additional decorations, such as ribbons, strips of fabric or dried flowers.
Other Activities 1. Conversation Starters — Prewrite conversation starter questions on smooth rocks and add them to a fancy jar or vase. Guests take turns pulling them out and reading questions out loud. 2. Scavenger Hunt — Find an outdoor scavenger hunt list online or make your own. When the sun goes down, use glowsticks to hunt around the yard for items. 3. Watch a camping movie — Choose a fun kidfriendly camp movie to end the night. If you are screening the movie away from the Glampground, create an alternate fun space. Try filling an inflatable pool with blankets and pillows for a cozy viewing set up. Movie ideas: The Parent Trap, Camp Rock, Cheaper by the Dozen 2 or The Great Outdoors.
Menu 1. For an easy appetizer or movie snack, make campfire nachos. Fill individual foil packets with tortilla chips, cheese, tomatoes, corn, beans, meat and avocados. Seal foil and cook 4–5 inches from fire for 10 minutes (or until cheese melts). 2. For dinner, serve warm mugs of tomato soup and grilled cheese paninis. Offer guests panini add-ons like bacon, avocado, tomatoes and spinach. 3. Chocolate fondue is a fun and trendy alternative to birthday cake. Provide strawberries, bananas, pound cake, cookies or marshmallows for dipping. 4. For breakfast, let kids make cinnamon rolls on a stick. Use kabob sticks (presoaked in water) to secure the rolls and cook slowly (about 15 minutes) over campfire or low grill heat. Drizzle with icing and serve with fruit.
Goody Bags
the glass a thin, muted layer of color. When dry, decorate with puff paint, glitter or rhinestones. Add a battery-operated tea light or string of lights and seal with a decorated lid. 2. Shabby Chic Blankets — Prewash twin flat sheets from a thrift store (use two per guest). Have each person lay two sheets on top of each other, matching up the edges. Cut strips (2” wide) about 4” from the edges, all the way around. Tie strips together to form two-sided blankets.
Each of the crafts serves as a take-home item, but if you don’t do crafts — or want to provide something extra —here are a couple ideas: 1. For easy (and adorable) glamping-themed goody bags, provide all the fixings for s’mores — chocolate bar, Teddy Grahams and marshmallows. Add a note that says, “Life is s’more fun with friends like you.” 2. Fill dollar store cinch bags with toothbrushes, lip balm, travel sized hand sanitizer and makeup remover. v Pam Molnar is an avid party planner and mother of three.
