Fun Summer Outings

Keep Your Cool The hottest days often arrive right before school begins. Don’t sweat it! Visit Waterfront Park on Pacific Highway downtown where the kids can splash and cool down in the giant fountains. Save time to play on one of San Diego’s most unique playgrounds. Don’t forget towels, sunscreen and a picnic. Ride the trolley for added fun. The Green Line drops riders a couple blocks from the park. www.sandiegocounty.gov/parks/Waterfrontpark.html

We’re at the sunset of summer and the view is beautiful. Though the new school year is just around the corner, there are plenty of exciting opportunities to create memories. Savor the last days of summer with these fun family activities.

(www.southbaydrivein.com) has three screens and Santee Drive-in (www.santeedriveintheatre.com) has two.

Get a Rare Glimpse of the Solar Eclipse

Have you taken the kids to the Del Mar Races? Bring little horse lovers to Del Mar Family Weekends held Saturday and Sunday afternoons through September 3. From pony rides to magic shows and inflatable games, make this your new end-ofsummer tradition. Children receive free racetrack admission. www.dmtc.com/calendar/detail/family

The fireworks may be over, but the real show in the sky is still to come. Don’t miss the full solar eclipse on August 21, the first in 40 years. The Fleet Science Center will have live telescope and other safe viewing options in the plaza. Special sunshade glasses will be available for purchase. Since San Diego is not a spot where the eclipse can be seen in totality, live streaming will be available in the Giant Dome Theater. www.rhfleet.org

Enjoy Symphony Movie Magic

Join the Festivities in South Bay

Remember falling in love with E.T. in the theater? Share an enchanted evening with the kids on August 11—view this beloved movie on the big screen at Bayside Summer Nights as the San Diego Symphony performs the score live. Your heart will melt as you fall in love with this charming film all over again. www.sandiegosymphony.org/tickets-events/bayside2017

Wow the family with a trip to the Chula Vista HarborFest at Bayside Park on August 19. Adventurous families can try a kayak, paddleboard or the rock climbing wall. Enjoy a bubble show, arts & crafts, animals from Living Coast Discovery Center, a pet parade and much more. Free to attend. www.cvharborfest.com

Cozy Up to a Drive-in

Ditch Summer Brain Drain

Have some nostalgic fun by taking the kids (in their PJs, of course) to a drive-in movie theater. Take pillows and some favorite snacks. Two local spots still offer this timehonored summertime classic. South Bay Drive-in

Help kids put on their thinking caps before school begins at one of the many family-friendly exhibits in Balboa Park. Play arcade games and learn about their design at the Fleet Science Center’s Game Masters. Stomp into The NAT’s Ultimate

Dinosaurs before it closes on September 4. Pretend to Be the Astronaut at the Air & Space Museum. Or, learn about human connections to the animal kingdom in the Museum of Man’s Living with Animals exhibit. Be sure to use the kids’ free tickets earned through the San Diego Public Library Summer Reading Program. www.balboapark.org/explore/museums

Watch a Sunset Beyond Compare Enjoy cool ocean breezes and picturesque views at Torrey Pines Gliderport, one of the county’s most memorable spots to savor a sunset. The kids love watching hang gliders run and leap off the cliffs as vibrant sails carry them toward the ocean. Bring a picnic or grab a bite at the café, which features live music on weekend afternoons. www.flytorrey.com

Reunite at a Free Summer Concert Bring friends and family together and share your love of music at a free concert. Have a picnic, dance as you watch the sunset and reconnect with school friends before classes begin. Find a concert in your neighborhood at www.sandiegofamily.com/things-to-do/ seasonal-happenings/1186.

Try something new or visit your favorite neighborhood spot. Little Italy’s iDessert by Jean-Philippe is a dessert lover’s paradise. Use their iPads to create a customized gelato delight; make yours a “Vegas Bowl” to be wowed by dry ice surrounding your creation. An aftersunset walk with ice cream in hand is a perfect way to cap off summer. v Cherie Gough is a freelance writer and San Diego native who loves finding new adventures with her two kids.
