Our Organization

VOLUNTEERS The San Diego Symphony is honored to have some of the best volunteers in San Diego, who often go above and beyond ushering! Each shift, they come early and, on many nights, stay late to remove numbers from seats so The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park event crew can pull chairs for our everchanging venue configurations. For events that are without seats, they help with wayfinding and aisle clearing. For events like our annual Pride Yoga, they handed out drink tickets and tattoos, and for our community events they help with arts and crafts. The San Diego Symphony is grateful to have such a tireless group of workers on its volunteer team and couldn’t imagine success without them. The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park has quickly become one of the “country’s coolest concert venues,” as reported by Forbes Magazine in the summer of 2022. Now in its third season, the orchestra’s thrilling summer 2023 lineup ran June through the end of September 2023. Orchestra for the Opening Night Concert celebration. On the heels of launching a landmark venue, the San Diego Symphony’s 2022 outdoor season at The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park kicked off June 24 with Rafael Payare conducting the orchestra in a West Coast premiere piano concerto by Venezuelan American composer Reinaldo Moya featuring GRAMMY®-nominated pianist Joyce Yang and Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. The weekend continued with R&B icons Boyz II Men

alongside the San Diego Symphony, conducted by Christopher Dragon and concluded with Straight, No Chaser: The Music of Thelonious Monk featuring Gilbert Castellanos. In fiscal year 2023, there were several standout out events at The Rady Shell, including: •

Our Venues

About The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park The centerpiece of the 3.7-acre public Jacobs Park developed and managed by the San Diego Symphony on the city’s scenic Embarcadero, The Rady Shell is the first permanent outdoor venue in the San Diego Symphony’s century-long history, designed to host more than 100 concerts and events year-round. The venue was developed in partnership with the San Diego Unified Port District with 96% of the $85 million cost raised privately by the Symphony. As innovative in design as it is spectacular in setting,

The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park offers 360 degrees of year-round music, sky and sea, and is an unprecedented resource for the community. The Symphony’s expanded schedule of diverse outdoor concerts includes classical concerts and an exciting roster of commissioned works and premieres programmed by San Diego Symphony Music Director Rafael Payare as well as performances by international touring artists and free programs.

Kool & The Gang (July 4, 2022), one of the many concerts this summer that sold well over 4,200 tickets

Flying Lotus + Hiatus Kaiyote (August 23, 2022), which had a whopping 71.6% new accounts sitting in that audience.

“Making music at our new, iconic outdoor home is profoundly joyous and powerful,” said Rafael Payare, San Diego Symphony Music Director. “This year marks the venue’s first full season of programming, and we have some incredible works in store—from long-standing traditions of the Tchaikovsky 1812 Spectacular and Beethoven by the Bay, to performances with wonderful artists like Jennifer Hudson, as well as Flying Lotus and Hiatus Kaiyote. The momentum continues for our city and orchestra, the possibilities are endless!” n

The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park’s 2022 Conrad Prebys Summer Season was full of successes, and eventually brought in more ticket sales than any San Diego Symphony previous summer series on the bay—totaling out at more than 115,000 tickets sold.

The venue is available year-round for non-profit community groups, schools and individuals. Jacobs Park, managed and programmed by the Symphony, surrounds the performance space with walkways, dining pavilions and recreational facilities in the heart of the Embarcadero and is accessible to the public for free on most days of the year. ARTISTIC OVERVIEW The 2022-23 Jacobs Masterworks Season was filled with exciting programs from beginning to end, as the San Diego Symphony Orchestra again toured San Diego County, bringing music to many neighborhoods and venues. Bookended by concerts at The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park, the Orchestra performed in Downtown San Diego (San Diego Civic Theatre), Escondido (California Center for the Arts), La Jolla (Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center), Chula Vista (Southwestern College), Rancho Santa Fe (The Village Church) and Del Cerro (Patrick Henry High School), and also performed for the second straight year in Palm Desert (McCallum Theater). Music Director Rafael Payare led the orchestra in eight dynamic programs, and the season also featured seven guest conductors, 15 soloists and seven vocalists, in addition to the singers of the San Diego Master Chorale. The musicians of the San Diego Symphony Orchestra shone brightly throughout the season, adapting seamlessly to the unique acoustics and size of each venue, and the process of being "on the road" in a different location each week. Led by Music Director Rafael Payare's vision for the orchestra and skillful leadership, the Orchestra continues to surpass expectations and develop its beautiful unique San Diego Symphony sound. COMMUNITY PROGRAMS Over the last fiscal year, the San Diego Symphony has held strong in its commitment to community programming and its approach to serving the greater San Diego region through the universal language of music. Deeply encoded into the San Diego Symphony’s DNA is the belief that music can catalyze positive change through shared experiences centered around the stories of our place and our time. It’s a belief that great concerts are just the beginning. The San Diego Symphony is all about dynamic and passionate music making, creating experiences for families and the community to gather, and celebrating this incredible place we call home. Review: Conductor De Waart leads San Diego Symphony with nuance and grace at the Civic Theatre The San Diego Union-Tribune | March 13, 2023

On Saturday evening at The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park, the world dissolved into ashes and celestial trumpets summoned the dead from their graves.

De Waart and the ensemble were remarkably at ease as they moved through evocative and pictorial textures: the low strings gritty and tough, the winds unified as they gently rocked the crescendos, the ample and heavy brass impressively nimble.

Conductor Rafael Payare takes no prisoners in Escondido San Diego Reader | October 14, 2022

Review: The San Diego Symphony Performs Two Classics and a World Premiere at San Diego’s Rady Shell BroadwayWorld San Diego | May 24, 2023

Rafael Payare continues to impress. The most recent program in the San Diego Symphony’s Rady Shell season saw him at the helm for the Brahms second piano concerto, Dvořák’s seventh symphony and the world premiere of Gity Razaz’s Methuselah (In Chains of Time).

The performance was carefully executed, yet exciting. The tuning of the opening chorale section was so precise that it created a sonority beyond the sum of the individual notes. I’m not sure that effect would have come across in an outdoor setting. The conclusion of the overture blasted off with a massive tutti chord by the orchestra. As always, Payare kept the momentum until the final notes of the piece.

INSTITUTIONAL ADVANCEMENT The San Diego Symphony continues to grow as an institution. It has harnessed the momentum of the opening of The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park, developed artistically under the leadership of Music Director Rafael Payare, advanced its mission of Changing Lives Through Music, and bolstered its reputation as a civic partner and cultural leader. From the orchestra’s artistic strides to the development of a wide range of community access and engagement programs, the Symphony continues to expand its impact as well as its support base—adding 2,232 individuals to its donor rolls during FY2023, which ended on June 30. In October 2022, thanks to the philanthropic vision of the Symphony’s community of supporters, The Future is Hear campaign was brought to completion, having successfully surpassed its goal of raising $125 million in support of The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park and the Symphony’s wideranging artistic and community engagement programs.

The Annual Fund also saw meaningful growth in FY2023, as the Symphony launched its second successful Conrad Prebys Summer Season and the expansion of community programming at The Rady Shell. Operating support for the orchestra increased by 10% in FY2023, largely driven by 13 new corporate sponsors and 1,030 new individual annual fund contributors. This year’s Jacobs Masterworks Opening Night and Gala was also a great fundraising success, surpassing its goal and netting $637,000 for the Symphony’s learning and community engagement programs! On top of all of this, the Symphony also launched the quiet phase of the Jacobs Music Center Renovation and Endowment Campaign. In conjunction with this effort, the Symphony reinvigorated it’s Planned Giving Program and developed a Planned Giving Advisory Council comprised of estate, tax, and financial planning professionals to be a resource for staff and supporters interested in leaving a testamentary gift to support the Symphony’s Endowment Fund.

DONOR HIGHLIGHTS Martha and Ed Dennis

There are many components to the art of a symphony. From the craftsmanship of each instrument and the mastery of the musician holding it, to the vision of the composer, and the skillful timing of the conductor. One crucial element that cannot be overlooked, which serves to bring all the other pieces together, is the venue. It is the venue which most excites Ed and Martha Dennis, generous supporters of the San Diego Symphony and, for Martha, lifelong fan of classical music. In her words, “having a world-class acoustical hall is a wonderful opportunity for San Diego and we feel that it will be another significant star attraction in our San Diego landscape.” Ed and Martha have lived in San Diego since 1970. Martha was foundational in the region’s telecommunication industry and Ed has been a professor at UC San Diego since they came. In addition to supporting the San Diego Symphony, Martha served as President of The La Jolla Music Society and has supported arts and education in San Diego for decades. They have traveled the world to hear orchestras in great concert halls such as the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, and the Philharmonie du Paris. “Every one of these experiences has left us with stunning and lasting memories of those uniquely special venues and the music that we heard presented in them.” When they found out about the San Diego Symphony’s plan to renovate Jacobs Music Center, they decided they had to get involved and help realize this dream for San Diego. “For me the venue really is important,” says Martha. “That is why we’re so excited about this project.”

42

San Diego Symphony

The San Diego Symphony has brought on HGA Architecture Firm, experts in historic hall renovations, and Paul Scarbrough to oversee the acoustical performance of the renovated Jacobs Music Center. Mr. Scarbrough recently completed the new Geffen Hall at Lincoln Center in New York City. The new Jacobs Music Center will have superior acoustics for both musicians and audiences and will preserve the beautiful interior design features of the original Fox Theatre. The Dennises credit the enormous support of Joan and Irwin Jacobs along with the leadership of San Diego Symphony CEO, Martha Gilmer, for bringing this project to life. “The Symphony is filling a need in San Diego with what it is providing to the public,” says Martha. “The only piece left is a full-sized indoor symphony hall with great acoustics.” Excitement and anticipation are mounting as the grand re-opening of Jacobs Music Center approaches in November 2023. Soon the new hall will be filled with the music of beloved classical symphonies as well as a collection of new compositions debuted during the California Festival:

A Celebration of New Music. The preservation and continued growth of our art form is made possible with the support of donors like the Dennis’, who share in our mission of bringing music to the City of San Diego for generations to come. “We got involved because this organization is going places,” said Martha. “We hope that people will see this as a unique opportunity and will consider participating as well.”

Having a world-class acoustical hall is a wonderful opportunity for San Diego and we feel that it will be another significant star attraction in our San Diego landscape.

Philip and Gayle Tauber

Artists, entrepreneurs, and lovers of music, Philip and Gayle Tauber have been supporters of the San Diego Symphony since 1982. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Gayle and Phil grew up together and began dating in high school. Fifty-seven years later, they live in San Diego and collaborate on their shared passion for art, business, and supporting their community. Together, they have built several successful brands and businesses, most recognizably perhaps being Kashi Company, cereal, and grainbased products. Gayle is an oil painter whose work is focused on inspirational women; Phil is a lifelong professional trumpet player who has performed with numerous organizations, including our own San Diego Symphony. Singularly and together, they give presentations on entrepreneurship and innovation and mentor emerging leaders. Over the years, Phil and Gayle have watched and listened as the San Diego Symphony has gone through major growth and transformation, the culmination of which has been embodied in the Rady Shell at Jacobs Park. “What you’re seeing now is the result of 40 years of transitional work,” says Phil. “It is such an improvement on the concept of an outdoor concert venue. And of course, the music is rich and exciting.” The Taubers are big fans of the San Diego Symphony’s summer concerts and could not imagine a better backdrop than The Rady Shell. “We have continuing appreciation for the variety of musical opportunities,” Gayle added. “An evening at the Bay, enjoying the music and talent, quietly passing boats, summertime breezes … It’s just magical!”

Gayle and Phil were early supporters of the Symphony Summer Partners program, a campaign geared toward supporting Learning and Community Engagement efforts at the park and beyond throughout San Diego County. Gayle said, “The thought, effort and resources that have been given to community access, particularly diverse populations and next generations is so important.” Through its community outreach and with the help of donations, the San Diego Symphony provides thousands of free and discounted tickets to various groups and direct service organizations, as well as providing numerous education, health and wellness activities, and environmental protection initiatives. “This is the best thing since the red trolly,” Phil says. “If people want to see a symphony concert, it’s accessible.” Gayle and Phil graciously recognized the work and commitment that has driven this time of growth for the San Diego Symphony. “I think the leadership and staff deserve huge rounds of applause,” said Gayle. “We are fans of Martha Gilmer and will

always remember how important she has been for our community and what she has done for all San Diegans.” Phil added, “And we appreciate the Jacobs and the Radys and everything they have done for the Symphony.” Everything that The San Diego Symphony offers to the community is made possible with the help and support of our patrons and donors. Greg and Rosanne Berton

Longtime patrons of the San Diego Symphony will remember The Berton Family Young People’s Concerts, which gave the gift of music to thousands of San Diego city school students over the years. These concerts were named after Greg and Rosanne Berton in appreciation for their years of involvement, dedication, and generosity toward the symphony. Greg played bass in the San Diego Symphony Orchestra for 33 years, served as Chairman of the Orchestra Committee, and sat on the board of directors. Rosanne enjoyed a 25-year administrative career in education and medicine at UCSD. Together, Greg and Rosanne created the Berton Family Charitable Trust, naming the San Diego Symphony as a beneficiary. “It’s a gift of thanks for the opportunity to spend my life in the thing that I love the most,” said Greg. “It’s a gift to all the people who worked so hard for the orchestra and cared enough about this art form to give it stability.” Their gift, set up as a charitable remainder trust, will be received by the San Diego Symphony next year at the end of a 15-year period, and will go a long way to support its programs and operations for years to come. “It’s that idea of paying it forward,” Rosanne added. “You never know what good can come out of your gift.” One area of the San Diego Symphony’s community engagement that Greg and Rosanne appreciate most is its music education programs. “I developed this attitude a long time ago,” Greg said, “that every child deserves to hear this music live. And every child deserves to have this music as part of their education.” 44

San Diego Symphony

The Young People’s Concerts, now called School Concerts, are part of that engagement and are set to resume in-person at the Jacobs Music Center after existing as a virtual program for several years due to COVID-19. “I can’t help but think of the far-reaching benefits to any kid sitting in the audience, any family member, or teacher who watches their student,” added Rosanne. “It’s just inspiring.” As we return to inperson experiences, the program will expand the Symphony’s work in schools, which will include chamber ensemble visits to schools, an eight to ten-week classroom curriculum, and a culminating school concert at Jacobs Music Center which can be experienced live or online. With the Rady Shell at Jacobs Park beginning its third season in June 2023, and the grand re-opening of Jacobs Music Center, the San Diego Symphony is poised to make a major impact in the city and reach bigger

and broader audiences than ever before. Greg and Rosanne, thank you for your support in developing a bright future for the symphony. San Diego Symphony is proud to count the Bertons among our Legacy Society members.

Anthony Boganey “If we are to hope for a society of culturally literate people, music must be a vital part of our children’s education.” – Yo Yo Ma It was at a San Diego Symphony fundraiser for music education programs that Dr. Anthony “Tony” Boganey first became involved with the organization. Tony joined the San Diego Symphony Board of Directors in 2019, and firmly believes in the importance of music in public schools. “Data has shown,” he said, “that when students have a greater connection to the school other than academics, they have a higher probability of matriculating and going on to college.” Originally from Michigan, Tony grew up in a home filled with classical music, jazz, and R&B. He began learning the trumpet in 4th grade which he continued throughout high school. He has lived in San Diego for the last 20 years and practices medicine in Endocrine Surgery. Tony is a member of the Partner with a Player program, in which major gift donors are paired with a member of the orchestra to meet socially and sit beside during an onstage rehearsal. “I’ve always been involved in giving back to the community” says Tony. “But as I’ve gotten older, I’ve focused on what I want to spend my time on, and one of those things is the San Diego Symphony.” This last summer, the Symphony held its annual Partner with a Player dinner at The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park. Tony recalled, “They performed Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, which I remember playing in high school.” After the rehearsal, Tony spoke with the principal trumpet player, and was

surprised to learn they are from the same town in Michigan, went to the same high school, and even studied under the same music instructor. “It was a very unique experience!” With the help of donors like Dr. Tony Boganey, the San Diego Symphony supports educational programs and initiatives in the community. Particularly, virtual concerts for elementary school students, in person rehearsals, and the High School Ambassadors, a paid internship program providing students from across San Diego County employment and performing arts training. “I enjoy working with young people, helping guide them on their journey and giving them the idea at a young age that giving back is just something that you do.” In addition to investing in the future of our youth, Tony has made a meaningful investment in the San Diego Symphony, and the future it is creating for itself. With the growing success of The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park, and the mounting excitement over the grand opening of The Jacobs Music Center, it is a truly transformative time for our organization. “Part of innovation is growth and changing and improving,” says Tony. “I think that is what this period is going to be best known for; re-birth and re-vitalization of the orchestra.”

I enjoy working with young people, helping guide them on their journey and giving them the idea at a young age that giving back is just something that you do.

OPERATING SUPPORT Annual Fund contributions support the San Diego Symphony’s ability to maintain artistic excellence, present exceptional guest artists and conductors, and provide learning and engagement opportunities for San Diego’s culturally rich and diverse community. The following programs are just a few of the ways to support the Symphony’s Annual Fund:

PARTNER WITH A PLAYER Partner with a Player participants have a unique opportunity to gain insight into the orchestra and engage with a musician and the Symphony in meaningful ways. Partners provide sustaining annual support and gain an intimate perspective of what it is like to be a musician within an extraordinary group of players. Partner with a Player is the most popular philanthropic program at the San Diego Symphony because it provides participants with the opportunity to engage with a talented musician or entire orchestra section beyond the concert hall experience. Each year, Partners are hosted at one of the most highly anticipated special events of the year, the annual Partner with a Player onstage side-byside performance experience and dinner. Partners are seated with their Player on stage and are immersed in an experience from the musician’s point of view. This past year’s Partner with a Player event was held on Wednesday, May 17, 2023, at The Rady Shell. Sponsors joined their musicians on stage for a performance, followed by a dinner where the musicians sat with their partner for the remainder of the evening.
