Dear Readers, . Dear Readers,

This is another milestone for San Diego Woman Magazine, we are presenting our first ever “Expert Issue.” Over the 8 years we’ve been publishing, we have had some amazing women, and men, who have graced our pages. Professionals, and experts in numerous areas. Everything from Doctors to Roller Derby Queens, from CEOs to creators of products we use every day and don’t even think twice about what life was without these inventions. We decided that we wanted to bring these experts to our readers (in one issue) and asked them to provide a tip or hint of some kind to our readers. The response was overwhelming. We have experts in so many different fields that we know you will come away from reading this issue having learned at least one new thing that you didn’t know. As you will notice we have had a big change. We have a new web address and a new website, which is currently a work in progress. You can now find us at www.sdwomanmagazine.com. My new email is editor@sdwomanmagazine.com. So please drop me a line to say hi or share your stories with us. We are always happy to share Veteran’s stories with our readers, so take a few moments to read about these special San Diegans who served our country. We should think about the sacrifice these brave soldiers make, not just on Veteran’s Day, but every day of the year.

Personally, this has been a very tough time for me. On January 5th I lost my brother; those who know me are aware of the relationship that Joseph and I had over the years. My brother was mentally ill, and I have been his caretaker since my mom’s passing 18 years ago. He was one of the most brilliant and yet tortured souls, and also one of the kindest and most loving brothers anyone could ask for. His unexpected passing, at the young age of 61, has devastated me and I want to thank all of my friends, co-workers, advertisers, and readers for their kind words and love they have shown me in my time of grief. Aside from Joseph’s illness came a brilliance in writing poetry, and his poems have graced our pages in the past. In his honor, I want to dedicate this issue to my beloved brother and allow our readers to enjoy his poetry one last time. This poem was one he wrote to me in celebration of my birthday. Thank you Joseph - I miss you terribly. This one is for you!

Sincerely,

Judith A. Habert Publisher/Editor-in-Chief

I tried Glamping for the first time. It was a blast. My husband had always been trying to convince me to go camping, but I have never been the outdoor type. I liked seeing your article on this subject, and I hope it will make other women who fear camping take a chance with this more upscale version of camping. Lori from Hillcrest Your expert advice on skin cancer caused me to make an appointment with my doctor to examine some questionable spots on my face and shoulders. Luckily I did, and my doctor was able to treat me before they became even more serious. Thanks for the important article. Joan from Mira Mesa Thank you for the wonderful article on the Pantaii Inn. I am originally from Bali and there have been times when I have felt homesick. After reading your article I booked a stay at the Inn. For the two nights I stayed there I felt as if I was back home again. They have really done an amazing job of bringing Bali to San Diego. If you have always wanted to visit Bali, the Pantaii Inn is the next best thing to being there. Lilly from San Diego I had to laugh at the article about Yelp. My kids are the same exact way. They will not go anywhere without first consulting yelp. Even if I have already been to the restaurant or hair salon, if the yelp review is not 4 stars they will not trust their own Mom. How bad is it when your children trust total strangers on an app over their own mother? However, recently they have had some negative experiences with 4 star rated businesses on Yelp. So maybe now they might trust Mom? Probably not, but I can hope. Melanie from Escondido

Thank You For Your Service Success in Serving Your Country in Conflict and Peace By Gerald M. Neff

Photos courtesy of Bryana Jordan & Hannah Stewart

San Diego

Both, after serving their country overseas, landed on the West Coast at Camp Pendelton and were here to stay. They met in similar circumstances looking for a civilian job, and both were accepted into the Security Department of Harrah's Rincon Casino and Resort in Valley Center, San Diego.

After a year of success in their jobs, Hannah is now lead on the Security night shift. Liked and respected by her fellow employees and security force, she is continuing her career. Bryana is now dealer lead in the table games section and is serving an internship for dual rating. They continue to see each other and are friends. When asked to comment on their service and experiences, both were quite enthusiastic in their responses. Bryana replied that she would do it again in a heart beat. With those nine years in the USMC and her tours overseas plus her times under fire, these were the finest experiences of her life with the best folks in the world at her side. Hannah was equally enthusiastic in saying that she would repeat it again without any second thoughts to serve with her comrades in arms and do service for her country. “I was proud and still am today”.

Hannah Stewart

Bryana Jordan

The San Diego area has always been the land of the free and the home of the brave. These two attractive and active young ladies are two more of the same. Bryana Jordan, a nine year veteran of Afghanistan and Iraq; and Hannah Stewart also of eight years in the same theaters. Although, these two women never knew each other while serving overseas, they were both proud members of The United States Marine Corps. Bryana hails from Texas and did her basic and advanced training as US Marine Corp Aircraft Support in Parris, Island and Camp Le Jeune. Hannah came originally from Arkansas and went through similar basic and advanced training on the East Coast US Marine Corps as ground field wire-man.

Both commented that upon serving they themselves were much better persons for it. As a result, these young ladies made it in the sense of several tours each serving in war zones and surviving to return home with the always present memories of experiences and comrades that are no longer with them. They made the transformation and big jump with success from “veterans” to “civilian” life. This civilian life as successful women moving upward and forward in our very own San Diego.

Story and Photo Provided By Glenda Batzer

A Remarkable Navy Love Story I wanted to share the story of how my military career, and the rest of my life, were somehow a result of destiny and probably luck. I was 22 years old and had no luck figuring out what I wanted to do with my life. I came from very modest means and like so many of my generation, I did not have the financial means to go to college. So I decided I was going to join the United States Navy. I went to the local recruiting office and in less than a month I was on my way to Boot Camp, in Orlando, Florida. After eight weeks in Boot Camp and an additional 20 weeks training in A-School, I managed to graduate as one of the top two sailors in our class at technical school. This honor meant that I would have my choice of duty stations. I listed my top two as, San Diego, California and Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. My first choice was to be stationed on the USS Samuel Gompers, which was home ported in San Diego, California. My second choice was Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. After completing my training I went home on leave to see my family and when I reported back to school, my orders were to report to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. So my adventure continued. I got on an L1011 wide bodied commercial airplane to Hawaii. I remember the flight like it was yesterday. I was young, not quite 23. I was excited and felt as though anything were possible. When I arrived in Hawaii it was like a dream. Warm tropical breezes, sand and the most beautiful sunsets I had ever seen. The Submarine Base felt nostalgic as I walked around and tried to get my bearings. It had a palpable sense of history. I was assigned a room in the barracks, which served as temporary housing for sailors that were new to the base. My first task was to find an apartment off base and learn the bus schedules. Our Senior Chief would allow us from Monday to Thursday to look for an apartment off base but on Fridays, we were to actually swab the decks and paint or anything else they needed because we were not yet assigned to a permanent division. On the first Friday, I was sent to the maintenance locker to pick up some cleaning supplies. Now if you have ever been in the Navy, you know that they are famous for stripping and waxing to death every available floor or painting anything that does not move, with battleship grey paint. So off to the maintenance locker I went. When I walked in the door, I immediately clamped eyes on him. He was sitting in a chair with his feet up on the desk and his white cap tilted to one side. He was cool. He smiled and asked, “Can I help you? I smiled and gave him the list of supplies we were after. After a few flirtatious minutes, I found out his name was Mark. He was a Second Class Petty Officer that had been transferred off his submarine because he was awaiting orders to leave the island. His tour was up and he had made the decision not to re-enlist. I had given him my name and my barracks number. I left the maintenance locker with my supplies and a skip in my step. So a few weeks later, we arranged to have dinner at my new apartment. I was living in a high-rise luxury apartment in Waikiki a block from the beach. It was beautiful. We had a nice dinner on a Thursday night and by the weekend, Mark had moved out of the barracks and into my apartment. He unofficially became a Navy Wife. I worked in the Radiological Controls Division. I worked long hours and had three section duty, which meant every three days I stayed

on the base for 24 hours. So, Mark found a civilian job and spent time riding or fixing his motorcycle. On my days off, we were having fun going to the beach and exploring everything there was to explore on Oahu. One night only seven months later, Mark took me to La Paloma Mexican Restaurant for dinner and pulled out a ring and asked me to marry him. I am sure you are thinking it was a very short amount of time, but that little voice in my head told me that this was the one. Now between the fact that I had a difficult work schedule and we were so far away from our families, we decided to get married by a Justice of the Peace in a simple ceremony at Iolani Palace, outside on the palace grounds on a beautiful Hawaiian Saturday afternoon with a handful of friends on December 16, 1983. I stayed in Hawaii for my entire Navy career, and when I decided not to re-enlist we packed up and moved to the suburbs of Boston. In 2004 we decided to escape the cold and moved to San Diego. Fast forward to February 2015 and Mark and I are still very happily married and have two grown children and two grandsons. We have been married thirty years and two months. It seems like two lifetimes ago but at the same time, I can still picture our wedding day in my mind as though it was last week. I tell everyone that I feel as though I won the marriage lottery. I believe that destiny and the Navy both played a role in me finding that perfect guy. Mark, Thank You for being the best husband, father, friend, golf coach, and spider killer a girl could ever ask for. You are everything and more to me. I will love you forever. All My Love, Your Girl, Glenda

From Homeless to Hope: A Veteran’s Story One in six of the more than 9,800 homeless individuals in San Diego County are military Veterans. Interfaith is a leading provider of Veteran’s assistance programs in San Diego County, with a success rate for employment and stability that is 22% higher than the national average. I am about to share a story of one such Veteran, Tim. Eva: What was life like before you found Interfaith? Tim: My addictions started when I was around eight, my home life was violent, and my parents were divorcing. I was invited by an older cousin to go camping for the weekend, which is when I discovered beer and marijuana. I got drunk and stoned and found out I liked that feeling of detachment. I left home when I was fourteen, never finished school, and joined the Army when I was seventeen. Eva: When you got out of the Army what did you do?

tum, she finally said that’s enough and dropped me off at the California Motel (now the Escondido Inn), and I lived there for a year. Eva: How did you transition from there? Tim: I got a DUI in 1996 while I was working at the Artista Bistro, and then lost my job. From there I started working in the mall at the Nordstrom Café while I was still homeless. Strung out on crystal meth one day I broke my foot and ended up on crutches and lost that job. I was staying at the Armory, which used to be the homeless shelter where I first found out about Interfaith. I’d go there in the morning for breakfast and hook up with the homeless and plan my day. Eva: Tell me a little more about life on the streets; is there a code of ethics amongst you?

Tim: I wandered around for quite a few years between Missouri and Colorado, back and forth. I was in and out of jail and addicted to whatever you had, heroin, marijuana, meth, you name it.

Tim: It’s all about survival, if somebody has something to help you get through your day and you have something they need, we look out for each other. It’s similar to a neighborhood watch. Someone is always watching your stuff and the code is “you don’t steal from your friends.”

Eva: In between all the roaming around did you ever settle down, get married, children?

Eva: What about the people I see standing on street corners holding signs “homeless, please help?”

Tim: Shortly after I got out of the Army I had gotten arrested for stealing the Mayor of Hallsburg, Missouri’s pickup truck. I was drinking Jack Daniels, took the truck for a joy ride and when I got back parked it outside of the Post Office. I got back to my cousins and realized I left my backpack in the truck so went back to get it and the police were waiting for me. I was arrested and sent to Jail for sixteen months.

Tim: That’s just plain lazy, you have to have a hustle.

Eva: When (during this time) did the settling down occur?

Eva: So you first found Interfaith in 1992 when you were going to breakfast, when did you actually go into a program?

Tim: After I finished my incarceration, I still owed fines and was told I could cancel them if I went to rehab at Boones County Hospital, where I was born. Eva: Was that where you met your wife; was she a nurse there? Tim: No, she was also in the rehab center and we met during group. We ended up getting married and things were OK for a while. We had my daughter Shelby, but then ended up getting divorced and I headed for California when Shelby was eighteen months. Eva: What was in California? Tim: My dad lived here so I got a job at Lake Wolford Café, lived in a trailer park, and that’s when I discovered crystal meth. Eva: What happened after you discovered crystal meth? Tim: I don’t know, there are a lot of years I really don’t remember. I did however go into rehab again in 1992 because of some intervention by friends who introduced me to the Fellowship Center. That took hold for about two years; I was working two jobs, at the Olive Garden and the Metaphor Café. I was dong well at the Café, as the closing manager, but ended up hanging with the clientele. I started going out with them and lost my sobriety. (There’s a pause here, tears, choked up) Eva: It’s OK, take your time. Tim: Nancy had two young children, ages nine and eleven, we met at the Metaphor Café. I asked her out to a Forrest Gump movie and we just hit it off. We went everywhere together; Sedona, San Francisco, and then my drinking got the better of me. After ultimatum after ultima-

Eva: Isn’t that a hustle? Tim: No, I was always working the streets, looking through dumpsters, for aluminum, plastic, or glass.

Tim: It wasn’t until Merle’s Place opened up; I was number one on the waiting list. I waited for four-five months while they were still building it, just trying to live day-by-day. Eva: When did Merles Place open up?

Tim: 2005, they had a big grand opening and the first day they were moving people in and I went for breakfast, but I was sick. I was always sick from the diabetes. Eva: How long have you had diabetes?

Tim: Since 1988. I got sick and was told I couldn’t come in because I wasn’t a Veteran. I didn’t have my DD214 because I was living on the streets and there was no address to send it to. I sat down on the curb and just gave up, and the guy who was running ECSS (Escondido Community Sobering Services) came out and saw how sick I was and called an ambulance. They told me at the hospital, another 24 hours and I would’ve been dead. The guy who called the ambulance said I had a bed in the bunkhouse (ECSS) (when I got out) and I spent a year and a half there. Eva: What did you do there?

Tim: Try to become human again, to get better. I would ask for overnights so I could go out and sleep on the streets because I couldn’t get used to sleeping inside. Eva: Were you fed there or given any training?

Tim: Oh yea, three squares a day. They were hoping I wouldn’t die. I did a

lot of volunteering in the kitchen. But my time was up and I was told I had to go, and then someone said, “Aren’t you a Vet?” I said, yes and they helped me get my DD214 to prove I was a Veteran, and then I lived in Merle’s Place for two and a half years. I needed to get some kind of schooling so I went to phlebotomy school, but I couldn’t find a job doing that. However, I had an opportunity to move into a housing program (Fairweather Lodge) where I worked for Clearly Clean

Eva: Now you’re a Chef with Interfaith and work for the recuperative care program, tell me about that.

Tim: A transition program for Veterans male or female who are being released from the hospital but are not self-sufficient yet. They have a full nursing and psychiatric staff and are sent their daily meals, which are cooked at Interfaith. We are hoping to expand that program with more beds and hopefully a full kitchen someday. Eva: I understand you had a chance to go back to Kansas this past June to see your daughter and grandson.

Tim: Yes, I went there for my daughter Shelby’s wedding. I hadn’t seen her in thirteen years and I had never met my grandson Wyatt, it was an amazing experience. They came out in August and we had a chance to visit the beach. Eva: If you could tell the readers one thing about life on the streets what would it be?

Tim: We’re all human; we all have feelings, and the same desires you do. Support your local non-profit. Eva: What is the biggest single thing you feel Interfaith has done for you?

Tim: They gave me my life and my dignity back. They are willing to help you if you are willing to help yourself. For more information on how you can help a Veteran, the homeless, or any of Interfaith’s programs phone: (760) 489-6380 or go to http://www.interfaithservices.org/ Eva Starr’s spiritual journey has taken her coast-to-coast digesting the various schools of thought. Starr, a transplant from Cleveland, OH currently writes for The Journey Magazine. When she’s not writing you’ll find her cooking for the homeless and the Veterans of North County. The Greatest Generation By Robert Tussey

Lori and I were out to breakfast the other day at The Broken Yolk in Carmel Mountain Ranch. As usual the place was hopping and the conversations wove into one another. Courtney was coming past with menus to seat a new customer and we watched as an elderly couple shuffled by and chose their seat: She wanted light so they could read the menus. He wore a ball cap with his ship designation and some smaller things I couldn’t read. They sat ten feet from us and began the ‘what are you having, I don’t know’ scene we all know so well. They’d complete each other’s sentences and she chided him for having caffeinated coffee. “It’ll keep you up all day.” A conversation began with the couple in the booth behind them when she mentioned there were too many choices and wondered aloud ‘what was good here.’ As the couple behind them engaged, the attention was drawn to his military service. We couldn’t hear most of what he said as she was facing us in the booth, but the pantomime of the scene was magic. He brightened up and began telling stories of his time in the Navy. People close by stopped eating and talking and began to listen to this World War II veteran tell his tales with his wife punctuating on the parts where his memory was a little cloudy.

The greatest generation was just that. Once WWII was over the survivors came back and dove into American life and showed their pride by building lives and businesses and growing families and never complaining: Nose to the grindstone and all. We owe a great gratitude to all who have served, defending our country from the tyrannies perpetrated by war. We owe them our freedom. Thank you. And as that quick moment ended and the food arrived we saw the return of normalcy and daily routine. She said, “You know you shouldn’t have bacon. It’s bad for your cholesterol.”

He sat a bit more straight in his seat and his face glowed from the attention, but his pride in his service and his America dominated his demeanor and those around him. Then people began thanking him for his service. He said a humble thank you to each of them. And as quickly as it began, it stopped. The food came and all settled back into their own routine. This tiny fraction of time had come and gone but the moment was not lost on anyone around them. This elderly couple had touched the hearts of those in that little circle and I wished I would’ve been closer to hear it all. How beautiful it was to have witnessed his countenance. At this time in history, with wars and anger and discord swirling around everywhere, this gentleman’s brave past had touched a few more hearts in his journey. One that has seen decades of other conflicts come and go with his pride never waning.

Anthony Hong Tae Kwon Do Women and Self Defense: Helpful Tips and Misconceptions

Through the many years of training in various martial arts and teaching for over a couple decades I have come to realize some simple tips for women's self-defense and also some misconceptions. It’s easy to claim to have the best women's self-defense program, but if it isn’t teaching awareness or good habits you should probably take a second look. Awareness is probably one of the most important aspects of self-defense, having full awareness of your surroundings can certainly give you the upper hand or avoid any confrontation. For example, you are in a rush to a meeting in downtown San Diego; you can either stay on the sidewalk or hurry down an alleyway which seems to have a few men slumped down on the sides, which one would you go down? Of course the correct answer would be to take the sidewalk, the point is calculating risk. Are you prepared enough to defend yourself in that alleyway, if those men attacked you? Making good judgments can really alter the course of a dangerous situation. Having good self-defense habits are defined as having an answer for every common attack within a mugging, assault or any dangerous situation. As humans we naturally have bad habits when considering someone is attacking you; you flinch, scream, flail your arms around or even close your eyes completely. The purpose of taking a self-defense program is to acquire knowledge in which it can be used in a simple yet effective manner. The program should replace those bad habits with: putting your hands up for defense, striking vital points, proper movement and escaping in an effective manner. In conclusion, if you are looking for a good self-defense program it should give you everything you need to know to properly defend yourself in various situations for a long period of time after the program ends. Do understand learning one move once will only last that day; practicing one move a thousand times will create a lasting effect. Be mindful of your surroundings and always be prepared for the worst.

Turning Back Time: Dr. Tess Mauricio, MD The Time Machine Procedure By Deeba Van Overberghe

Photos by Lisa K. Miller

Have you ever had a moment of low self-esteem? Have you suffered from flawed skin? Did you ever think there was a correlation between the two? Dr. Tess Mauricio, MD will tell you there is. She is the founder of Scripps Ranch Dermatology, later renamed My Beauty By Tess, with multiple clinics in San Diego and Los Angeles. The creator of new, non-invasive approaches, with specialized technologies, Dr. Tess can help people who have flawed skin feel better about their appearance. And because they are not concerned about their appearance, their inner beauty has a chance to radiate and come forward thereby supporting better self-esteem and self-confidence. This can be such a problem when we are young…and then again as we age. In my years as a teenager, I suffered from a very bad case of oily skin and acne. It looked as if my cheeks were on fire. I had been teased and called Pizza Face in Junior High School. It left me with the damaging psychological scars of being self-conscious. Little did my mother know, my skin was sensitive to soaps, lotions and make-up. To this day, I still do not wear foundation of any kind and use the lightest moisturizers out there. In the past I’ve been told that I don’t look my age. However, this is changing for me. I have begun to experience sagging skin from weight-loss, turkey neck from aging and my cute smile lines and dimples are actually becoming frown lines and pits. I can’t even begin to think about how my eyebrows left my forehead and traveled to my upper lip! Often I have thought about body altering options, peels, fat sucking and pummeling. I’ve thought, no way, not for me. I have seen what happens to a person ten to twenty years down the road from a facelift after natural weight gain, and I have always known it is a temporary solution to the inevitable tic-tock of life’s clock. I have believed I should embrace age with confidence allowing nature to take its course. That is, until recently. I have just learned about the miracles Dr. Tess is offering her patients and how she can literally turn back the clock of time in regard to the condition of our skin. Dr. Tess is an amazing human being. She, too, suffered from flaws in her skin. Her personal experiences were a driving force behind her understanding the correlation between self-esteem and the condition of one’s skin. Our faces are what we use to make an impression, to communicate, to express thoughts, feelings and desires and when our skin isn’t the greatest, it can present a barrier for acceptance either by ourselves, or by others.

Dr. Tess wanted to help. “I considered psychiatry as a specialty before I realized changing peoples’ skin can change their emotional state,” she said. And so, she shifted her studies at Stanford Medical School to Dermatology. After becoming a Summa Cum Laude graduate at UCSD, she and her sister began to define her dream by leasing two rooms from her personal physician. With her sister’s cell phone in-hand, they booked appointments and honored Dr. Tess’s overwhelming desire to help others. However, she didn’t just stop there. She wanted to make a difference. She wanted to change the standard approach the industry had toward patients and expand on the technology and services available to help those in need. She became actively involved by becoming President of the San Diego Society for Dermatologic Surgery and continues to bring forth new technologies while educating others in her field. There really is a need for Dr. Tess. She supports the importance of balancing technology with holistic healing and approaches her patients with a desire to heal both the inside and the outside of the person who has flawed skin.

Non-invasive, the Time Machine Procedure is customizable to your needs. Using non-surgical methods, it produces beautiful lasting results. The procedure involves the use of various state-of-the-art technologies to create a younger more supple quality to your skin. The procedure usually takes a couple hours and requires little down time for recovery (like a day or two depending on your body’s rate of healing). The treatment involves the volumizing and tightening of your skin as well as giving your skin the opportunity to regenerate new collagen. The Time Machine procedure brings back your youthful radiance without breaking the bank and without a lengthy healing process. Your body doesn’t go into shock because the technology is non-invasive, which I love. I understand most dermatologists shy away from treating women with different skin tones because the treatments need to be so specialized. Dr. Tess actually believes in and supports specialization with her services. She does not shy away from treating women with this more complex procedure; she embraces it! The cutting edge technology behind the Time Machine procedure is unique and specialized to each individual with the concerns of holistic health as the basis of treatments. As I look into the mirror and see my 55 years of life carving its way into my skin, around my eyes and mouth and down my neck, I am wondering if perhaps I should take the plunge, push back about 5-10 years of gained wrinkles thereby looking and feeling younger – perhaps even more graceful than I already am. I think I would definitely walk a little taller and radiate a little more of my inner beauty through my glowing skin. I’m going to first learn a little more about the technology and procedure at http://www.mbeautyclinic.com/time%20machine%20 procedure.htm and then I’m going to make a call and schedule my appointment: 866.717.9844.

I would like to share one service in particular that holds my interest. It’s called The Time Machine Procedure along with the Timeless MD which is an affordable kit of products designed to help those on a budget who still would like to participate and experience the benefits of turning back time.

Woman

Now described as America’s Favorite Dermatologist, Dr. Tess continues to expand her practice and has just opened a brand new clinic in Miramar. She produces and hosts her own reality TV show airing on Philippian TV, creates her own products and travels around the world sharing it all with her clients as well as sharing her approach to the industry of Dermatology with her colleagues. One would not think she is as experienced and accomplished as she is; for Goodness Sake she looks all of about 25 - a walking advertisement for what she practices.

4 Steps To Starting Your Disaster Recovery Plan Photo courtesy of Kathy David

Without fail, whenever a natural disaster or another emergency situation happens, business owners’ panic, understandably concerned with whether or not they can trust that their business data will be totally protected. Three companies we provide I.T. services for were threatened during the last round of wildfires. Two of these clients were already set up for remote and cloud backup, but the third client had opted out of these services. The wildfire was closing in on this clients office, eventually getting as close as right across the street, so they were forced to evacuate their offices. In a rush, they had forgotten to grab their external drive, and called us asking, “Please, can you back up our data right now?” If you take nothing else away from this article, please take this: You don’t want to wait until the last minute to make sure that your data is protected in the event of a disaster. Disaster Recovery Planning should be something that you’re thinking about right now.

4

Right now, ask yourself, “How many days can my business and I afford to be down if there’s a disaster, a burglary or a hardware crash?” Most business owners, especially small business owners, don’t think about this until it happens to them. By that time, they’re down for weeks, and they’re spending an arm and a leg just to restore their information and their network. Don’t put yourself in this position. Instead, implement a multi-level approach to protect the data in your business. That way, you’ll have a failover; In case one channel fails, you’ll have another one to back it up. Here are 4 ways that you can protect your data before disaster strikes.

1

A regular backup server simply back up files. If a server crashes, then we would have to do a brand new build for that client, restoring all of the files that we had backed up, which can take up to a week or two. On top of that, if your hardware can’t be restored, we would have to order a new server, which takes three to five days to arrive, at which time we would have to reinstall everything and restore the files. That’s why, with an On-Premise, Traditional network, we typically recommend that you have both a local data backup solution and a system that takes an image of the state of your network itself. Taking a mirror image of the configuration of the operating system on a regular basis allows us to easily mount this image on similar or dissimilar hardware, backing up and restoring your system in a matter of hours rather than over days or even weeks.

2 3

In addition to your On-Premise backup solution, you also want to get a second layer and backup your data using the cloud. Backing up your data on the cloud protects you protects you in case you lose everything—For instance, if you’re burglarized and everything is taken, if your office building burns down, or if the hardware that your backup image sits on fails. Cloud data backup is simply an additional layer of protection. To be protected, you also want to have backup hardware ready to go. Some of our clients will have backup hardware ready to go for the server, the switched, the firewall, and whatever other components that they have on their network, so that they have what we call a hot swap ready to go.

That way, if something, say their firewall, goes down, they can easily replace it with their backup hardware. If you’re ready to update your systems, consider having your infrastructure completely on the cloud. Most of the time, when your server is on the cloud, backup is automatically in place. Replication can also be put in place relatively easily. For help developing your business’s disaster recovery plan, call IT Tech Pros, Inc. at 760.913.4700.

This is for you if you are a woman in your 40’s, 50’s or 60’s.

How to Break the “Troubled Family Barrier” By Maile Rudebusch Photo Lisa K Miller Are you facing issues that plague your marriage, family and work? Are you tired of just putting a Band-Aid on these problems and never really solving them? We asked Adrienne Blumberg who is referred to as “The Family Therapist Whisperer,” how we can deal with solving some of these issues that plague our families. Adrienne has established herself as a marriage and family therapist, specializing in families and tweens. “Yes, that in b’ TWEEN age that think they aren’t kids, but want to be a teenager.” Drawing on over twenty years of “family” experience as a successful educator and now family therapist, she is a family expert who understands families, couples and children because when the going gets tough, the family is in turmoil and turmoil needs a solution to break the barrier. Adrienne offered some valuable tips for dealing with a family in crisis: Tips for Families: 1. Remember, you are the parent and not your child’s best friend. Your child, teen, tween, needs boundaries. 2. You and your partner need to be unified so that your child can’t wedge their way between you. 3. Open communication is paramount 4. Parents need to do what they say and say what they mean. 5. Couples need to listen to each other. We hear but not always listen. 6. Take Five: This applies to all family members: If emotions and behaviors start to escalate walk away and take five deep breaths and exhale slowly after each one. This has proven to SLOW YOU DOWN 7. Do yoga, exercise, take walks, listen to music, meditate Helping Families to take control of themselves and their children Early on in Adrienne’s career she understood that tweens had challenging behaviors coupled with learning differences, which can become even more challenging when parents are struggling with marital issues. In fact, in 1982, she opened the doors to the Village Learning Center, a private facility that she co-founded and directed in Toronto, Canada. This specialty niche helped over 2,210 children over a 13 year period who were struggling with academics, disenchanting behaviors and social issues. Adrienne deconstructed the struggles that crippled many families. Recognizing that families matter, Adrienne’s trajectory brought her to the field of Marriage and Family Therapy thus combining her therapy and educational skills in order to help struggling families. The family therapist whisperer works collaboratively with the family to help everyone deconstruct belligerent behaviors. Adrienne can give families tools that are needed to deal effectively with anxiety, stress, attitude, ADHD, OCD, spectrum disorders, in addition to increasing selfworth, which results in recognizing a potential that would otherwise be unattainable. Adrienne can also give parents coping tools and strategies that can bring peace to the home through effective communication, a key component in any family. Adrienne adds, “I can give you all the required skills necessary to remove the Band-Aid and start to heal. If you are committed, I am committed to work with you individually, as a couple or as a family unit.” For further information please contact Adrienne Blumberg, Marriage and Family Therapist Located in Del Mar and Carlsbad 858-349-1422 ablumberg6@gmail.com www.adrienneblumbergtherapy.com

Photo by Lisa K Miller We have all heard the term empty nest syndrome, but we don’t realize what it is truly like until we face it ourselves. This is when we often re-evaluate our lives because nothing is the same as it has been for the past 20-30 years of our lives. Perhaps your kids have left the nest, or you realize that you need to rebirth your marriage. For some women this is when they decide it is time to finally pursue their ideal career or launch a new business. Maybe it is time to just commit to going to the gym three times a week and concentrate on getting the body you always wanted? This time in life doesn’t have to be “empty” It can actually be a wonderful new beginning. The transition to the next phase of your life can be a challenging time. Rather than fearing the future, you can view this time as an opportunity to examine your life and decide how you want to live in bliss for the next fifty years. This isn’t always easy to navigate on your own and many women have found that they need some gentle guidance along the way. This is where a Life Coach can come into play. Through coaching you will: • Examine your thoughts and feelings. With no judgment. Just curiosity. • Understand what that excess weight is trying to tell you. • Realize that you design the life you want. And that you can embrace your choices with grace and with ease. Working with a Life Coach Coaching helps you recognize that your thoughts determine how you experience the world – your thoughts drive how you feel and act, and not the other way around. How Can I Balance it All? By Marcie Laws

Sometimes in life we are faced with unexpected changes that occur when least expected. In less than a 12-month period, I became a first-time mom, a single mom, and I lost my own mother to a very aggressive form of cancer. On top of it all, I was launching my own small business, Mirabella Care. Often called the “Sandwich Generation,” we see more adults like me, that are required to provide care to their own small children in addition to their aging parents—all while working full-time. Fast forward 2.5 years, and I have a successful business that is dedicated to serving those in need of additional care—on both a short and longterm basis. We offer assistance to Senior’s that want to remain in their homes as they age, and also offer support services to busy adults that are in the same "sandwich" position I found myself in. Having been through the struggles of balancing all those responsibilities myself, I can often relate to the struggles and concerns of my clients. With a background in senior care, combined with a degree in Social Work, and experience in hospice and end-of-life care, it was an easy decision to start a company that provides quality assistance to Seniors in need of inhome care. The addition of personal and maternity concierge assistance was added to our menu of services to accommodate the larger family unit.

San Diego

Woman

Mirabella Care provides two distinct sets of services: quality in-home care to seniors, which includes personal care and grooming, medication reminders, meal preparation, companionship, laundry, and transportation services. Secondly, we provide support to people such as: single parents, busy families, working professionals, and new moms--assistance running their households on a daily basis, including: grocery shopping, run errands, laundry and dishes, home organization, planning special events, meal preparation, scheduling appointments--anything that eases the daily burden.

19

As the baby boomers continue to age and live longer, the need for inhome senior care has continued to grow. As working women (and men), we find ourselves trying to balance busy careers, caring for children at home, and also providing assistance to our aging and elderly parents. In order to reduce the stress involved in managing these responsibilities, my advice to clients and friends is to have a discussion and devise a plan about the type of care they'd like to receive as they age, including: finances associated with care, who will provide the care, where care will be provided, and end-of-life wishes. Discuss it with your family, write it down, and create a will and advance-directive. This ensures that your wishes are clear, and hopefully alleviates stress during an emotional time. Mirabella Care provides employees that are trained, professional, and truly care about their work. Moreover, we are insured and bonded, and background and DMV reports are available for all of our employees. As a boutique-style company, I love staying involved in my client's care, and have a very hands-on approach. We offer both hourly rates, and monthly packages. We welcome both short and long term arrangements. As a San Diego native, it has been my pleasure to help families in my community, and provide services that allow families to have more quality time.

MANAGING THE COSTS OF YOUR DIVORCE Photo Courtesy of Carlie Headapohl

By Carlie Headapohl, CDFA

“You may not control all the events that happen to you, but you can decide not to be reduced by them.” - Maya Angelou … nor your wallet in the case of divorce. In the United States, the average cost of a wedding is $28,000 and the average divorce costs $15,000-$20,000 and can vary significantly.

sionals charge for their time. Ask about retainer fees and closely read their contracts. Typically, lawyers charge in 1/10 of hour increments, which is 6 minutes at a time. If you call your attorney when you are highly emotional, at $300-$500 per hour, every 6 minutes of venting could cost you $30-$50!

CONFLICT IS EXPENSIVE: First and foremost, conflict costs; the more conflict, the more cost. Before meeting with attorneys, try to work out the emotional, financial and non-legal issues outside of your attorney’s office. Remember, attorneys are not therapists or financial planners so try to take care of as much as you can with other qualified professionals. Their hourly rates tend to be lower than those of attorneys.

Going into divorce emotionally strong, educated about the process and understanding your priorities will not only help reduce the financial costs of divorce, but the emotional costs as well.

KNOWLEDGE IS POWER: The other major factor in controlling the cost of divorce is to be prepared. If you educate yourself on the divorce process through books, divorce workshops, divorce coaches and other numerous resources throughout San Diego County, it will enable you to manage the process better. In particular, learn about the various alternative dispute resolution methods including mediation, collaborative divorce, cooperative divorce and pro se (do it yourself) divorce. These methods allow the divorcing couple to retain more control and help reduce the emotional and financial expenses of divorce. GET ORGANIZED: Do not underestimate how important organization is in the divorce process. The process requires gathering legal, financial and tax documents, and it can be overwhelming. Consider hiring a CDFA (Certified Divorce Financial Analyst) to help you gather all the necessary documents and the CDFA or other financial expert can more cost effectively help you analyze and prepare the necessary financial disclosures. ASSEMBLE A GOOD TEAM: For many people going through divorce, they and their children may experience some or all of the five stages of grief; it will likely be the largest financial transaction of their lives and divorce is a legal process. The ideal team should include a marriage and family therapist for spouses and children, a CDFA and legal advisor. Each situation is different, but assembling a team of qualified professionals can dramatically improve your divorce process and the outcome. UNDERSTAND COSTS: The nuts and bolts of how to manage the divorce meter, is to understand how attorneys and other profes-

KNoodleIt takes the guesswork and the risk out of choosing the perfect Providers for your home, event, leisure and technology needs. KNoodleIt was launched in September 2012 by Shannon Matwiyoff, a mother of two who had been working with a major fortune 100 company for the past 20 years. As a busy mom, she never found the time to research and screen providers for home or other important projects. She thought “there has to be a better process than just reading reviews”, and out of that KNoodleIt was born. KNoodleIt is a one-stop spot for busy consumers to look for everything from contractors, handymen, travel agents, computer repair, and special event providers such as florists – to name a few. Members have access to KNoodleIt’s extensive pre-screened vendor list and the discounts they’ve negotiated. Not only can they complete projects with confidence, but KNoodleIt is also focused on saving members money. Recently they’ve been canvassing bridal and home renovation shows in the San Diego area, their expansive offering of services can even help frazzled brides plan their dream wedding. The site is also a resource for when those unexpected contractor issues arise. One member turned to KNoodleIt when, during construction on their outdoor living space project, their contractor left them with a half-finished project and a quickly approaching Labor Day party. They were able to stay within their original budget and the contractor was able to complete the job with plenty of time for the family to show off their newly renovated outdoor area. The KNoodleIt staff is headed by Shannon along with Amanda Slocumb who is her Vice President and handles marketing and PR and is a vital part of the operations side of the business. Amanda has been an integral part of the business since the very beginning The team has worked together to assure that the KNoodleIt network is made up of trained professionals that are passionate about providing consumers with a quality-based resource they can count on for finding the right provider. For those looking for a unique gift for the holidays or birthdays, many members gift a KNoodleIt membership, they receive a customized card and when they are ready they activate the one-year membership and can begin completing projects with ease. Years ago when tooth replacement became a necessity the options were few. Most likely you would be forced to deal with the only option available, dentures. These were rarely comfortable; they felt unnatural, unstable and unreliable. In addition, you will likely need creams and adhesives to keep them secure and, over time, they will become unstable and unreliable and eventually you will need to have them remade or relined. Luckily, we now have another option, Dental Implants. Although they are more expensive than traditional dentures, the added expense is well worth it since this is an investment that can last a lifetime. In general, Dental Implants also help preserve bone quality and quantity and feel and function like natural teeth. Often when there is a loss of bone quality the facial structure is compromised and it can make you look like a totally different person: So all of these factors need to be considered when trying to decide which dental procedure should be chosen. Cathy Geddes, CDA, is a credentialed Certified Dental Assistant graduating from George Brown College, Toronto, Canada. Her 30 years of experience in the dental profession includes assisting in general dentistry, endodontics and periodontics. In 1991 Cathy became a sales representative for Dentsply Canada, first in Toronto and later in Vancouver, finally transferring to San Diego, California. In 2005 Cathy decided to focus her career in the growth area of implant dentistry and became a Territory Manager in sales for Straumann USA, a world leader in dental implant technology. Cathy’s ability to work in a multidisciplinary environment made her a natural choice to train, assist and problem solve with the dental teams in her territory. In 2009, Cathy retired from her role with Straumann USA to spend more time with her family. She now lectures, sharing her passion to educate those involved in the advancing world of implant dentistry. In 2013 Cathy started her own consulting business called Geddes Solutions. While working with many dental professionals in her career, Cathy saw a need to educate the dental team on how to answer patients’ top three questions on implants with confidence. Patients often have hidden concerns that they may not voice to the dental team. Often patients are fearful of dentistry and having an implant is something new to them. Often patients are fearful of dentistry and having an implant is something new to them. When patients ask, “How painful is implant treatment?”, the answer from a scientific study shows on a universal pain scale rating of 0-10, treatment is rated at a 2 from various time points during surgery and up to six weeks after treatment. Patients are often surprised to hear the answer is a 2. When we provide scientific support rather than one person’s personal experience, we can move forward with a decision for treatment based on facts. A dental implant is a permanent dental treatment solution for a missing tooth, whereas the choice of a bridge will require replacement in approximately 15-years. Our goal is for patients to be fully informed so they can make the best decision possible for their lifelong dental health. Cathy simplifies the implant process to increase case acceptance for your dental practice. If your team is not comfortable answering questions, how can your patients be comfortable choosing an implant as a treatment option? The Art of Natural Facial Sculpting By Mary Anne Fuchs, MD, FACEP Photo Courtesy of Dr. Mary Anne Fuchs, MD, FACEP

Do I really need a facelift? Do I really need a facelift? All too often I hear women say that they’ll hold out for a facelift until they REALLY need it. I find myself wondering why this “all or nothing” approach to facial rejuvenation? Why put off feeling better about yourself? If you invest in your fitness and wellness, why shouldn’t your face reflect your inner vitality? I think the problem is lack of understanding about what’s possible, compounded by fear of looking “done” or unnatural. I’m pleased to say that the art of facial aesthetics has evolved and we can now offer a more sophisticated and natural aesthetic result. There are many effective, long-lasting, non-surgical (and surprisingly affordable) options available today to tighten, smooth, lift and contour. For women in their 30’s, 40’s, 50’s and beyond, we have options for how to look and feel your best….so why shouldn’t you? Is it just gravity? Or am I deflated? What would happen if you take the skin of a 20 year old and put it on the face of a 50 year old? You’d have a 50 year old with really great skin….but she still won’t look 20! A huge part of the aging process is what’s happening underneath your skin. It involves your bones, muscles, and fat -- not just skin. Age-related volume loss is usually apparent in most women over 40, even earlier in ultra-fit individuals. Loss of fat, particularly in the upper and mid face, causes loss of the softness and gentle curves of youth. It contributes to sagging skin, creates progressive shadows and folds in your midface due to an inward and downward migration of the cheek, and ultimately, changes the shape of your face from more top-heavy to more squared.

So what are my options without looking “done”? Traditional facelifts that just “pull” up the loose skin can leave you looking “pulled” tight. In addition, just flattening out the nasolabial folds with fillers can further flatten the face as it begins to look disproportionate and unnatural. Too much volume in any one location looks unbalanced. The art of “natural facial sculpting” requires an understanding of the anatomy of facial aging, as well as a good eye for balance and proportion. New volumizing injectable options can last up to 2 years, make addressing mid-face volume loss easier and with more aesthetic results. Used in combination with Botox® and other injectable products, we can achieve a three dimensional lift and subtle contouring which gives a more elegant, balanced and natural result…without the cost, discomfort, or downtime associated with surgery.

Wine in San Diego County? By Tammy Rimes

food is a priority for many at their own family meals. And why shouldn’t wine be a part of that? With grapes that are grown in San Diego, made from local family wineries, it’s a great compliment to any locally served meal. When dining in restaurants or shopping at local markets, more are starting to offer local wines. On any given weekend, the answer to the question “What should we do for fun” is easy - “Let’s check out San Diego Wine Country!” About the Author: Tammy Rimes owns Hacienda de las Rosas Winery, featured on the front page of USA Today, winner of the San Diego Chamber of Commerce Innovative Marketing Award, and voted as 2014 San Diego Reader’s Poll Top 5 Wineries in San Diego County. Tammy is the author of “Drink Fine Wine…Ride Fine Horses – Leading the Life of Your Dreams,” a book that provides a fun and informative guideline on how anyone can begin their own dream life. When people mention California wine country, most think of Napa Valley: Paso Robles or Santa Barbara…not San Diego. But if you understand a bit of wine history…this is where it all began! With close to 100 wineries across San Diego County, this is one of the fastest growing wine regions in the nation. Currently, almost one new winery opens every month in San Diego. Why so much growth? Well, the laws changed. The County of San Diego recently overhauled its antiquated winery laws that were highly restrictive. With an opportunity for increased agritourism, pressure from local wholesale wineries and the need to switch to low-water use crops, the local laws regarding wineries were changed to allow tasting rooms. Wineries weren’t the only ones to benefit from the change. A whole cottage industry is growing as well

– tour companies, bed & breakfasts, local restaurants, wedding planners it’s an opportunity for many businesses. To review a bit of California wine history, the art of wine making started with San Diego Mission de Alcala…the State’s first mission. Not really known for its taste or quality, this early wine was used primarily for communion. In the late 1800’s, grape growing took off in leaps and bounds in the San Diego and Los Angeles areas. Later, when prohibition hit, grape growing gave way to citrus and avocado crops, which were considered more lucrative at the time. However, specific wineries across California were allowed to stay open and given special permission to continue making communion wine for the Catholic Church. When Prohibition was finally lifted, grape growing took off again, this time in northern California. So history reversed itself from the south to the north and that’s why many people don’t think of Southern CA as grape growing country. But it is perfect for grapes! Much of San Diego’s terrain and microclimates are similar to parts of Spain and Italy. Red varietals, and some warm weather loving whites, grow exceedingly well here. Is the wine any good? You bet it is! San Diego wines are winning awards and taking home gold metals. In fact, a recent visitor who owns a winery in Tuscany, Italy commented that the locally made Sangiovese and Barbera wines was as good as any he had tasted in his country. An additional feature that makes San Diego County unique is that most of the wineries are small family operations. A visitor will not only taste wines that are handmade from locally grown grapes, they will also meet the owners, winemakers and be served by their family. Having an impromptu tour, meeting their horses or ranch dogs, or seeing behind the scenes wine-making activities are highlights that make each visit unique and special. There is no corporate feeling here, and the wines are usually reasonably priced for the amount of work that went into each bottle. Farm to table is a huge movement across the country. Empowering Women to Grow Wealth Photo Courtesy of Laurie Itkin

Laurie Itkin is not your typical financial advisor. She entered the money management field as a second career only after she had built her own wealth through investing. She uses her knowledge and experience to empower women of all ages and income levels to become successful investors and grow the money they work so hard to earn. Itkin’s path to investing began with a $1,600 inheritance she received from her grandmother. Instead of spending the money or putting it in a savings account as most 24-yearold women would do, she bought her first shares of stock. She continued investing over the next fifteen years and achieved a net worth of one million dollars before she turned 40. It wasn’t through a lucky stock pick; it was accomplished by living below her means, investing money instead of spending it, contributing as much as she could to her 401(k), and buying and selling stocks in a brokerage account. She educated herself by reading the Wall Street Journal every day and sharing investing ideas with co-workers who followed the stock market. Whether she is being interviewed on the evening news, conducting a speaking engagement, or signing copies of her Amazon best seller, Every Woman Should Know Her Options: Invest Your Way to Financial Empowerment, Itkin’s passion for improving women’s financial literacy is unmistakable. “I recognize that most women don’t have the time or confidence to make decisions about what stocks, bonds, or funds they buy,” says It-

kin, “but if they don’t have a baseline foundation of knowledge, how do they know they are receiving excellent service from the financial advisor they or their husbands trust to manage their money?” According to the Pew Research Center, 40% of American households with children include a mother who is either the sole or primary earner for her family and 24% of married women out-earn their husbands. However, when it comes to investing that money towards retirement, most women -- regardless of how much they earn -- delegate those decisions to their male partner. “This is concerning,” says Itkin, “since more than 90% of women at some point in their lives will be solely responsible for decisions they have to make concerning money.” Itkin provides complimentary account statement reviews for prospective clients and often finds evidence of women receiving poor service from financial advisors who impose layers of fees, send out complicated and confusing statements, and fail to explain why they choose certain products such as mutual funds and annuities when a plethora of other low-cost vehicles are available. “When I manage money for a single woman or a couple,” says Itkin, “I spend the time to explain how I built a portfolio for them, why I chose the investments I did, and how I will adapt that portfolio as their life circumstances change.” To learn more about how Laurie Itkin can help you achieve financial empowerment, visit her website at theoptionslady.com Contact Information Laurie Itkin Financial Advisor, Coastwise Capital Group 888 Prospect Street La Jolla, CA 92037 www.theoptionslady.com litkin@coastwisegroup.com Mobile: 858-220-4736

Suzanne Latour Asking Questions is Her Strength...

By Debbie Storms

Sophia Segal: Adding That Special Touch By Judith A. Habert

Opportunities are there for the asking and Suzanne LaTour is not afraid to ask questions. This led her to opening three GolfTec centers where she got her hole in one. Suzanne has been a financial planner for twenty-three years. She has credentials and a great track record in her field of expertise but strongly believes it always comes back to the grass roots of trust. It is all about people and teams. In light of the financial crisis in 2008 she decided to diversify and pursue starting her own business and her research began in 2009. Three months into her search she asked a question and the answer was a business she works hard at but doesn't feel like she is working. As a client of GolfTec, Suzanne was taking her third lesson when she heard a bit of information that was going to take her hobby to another level. The store where she was taking her golf lesson was for sale. A phone call to GolfTec headquarters launched her into a vertical learning curve in the world of franchising. This all didn't happen without doing her due diligence.

Purchasing a franchise requires a willingness to stay within a framework. You give up some control but you are offered many benefits. There is a balance you need to find as to how much you pay to the franchisor and what you receive from them to help your business grow. Suzanne did her research but also had to avoid getting caught up in too much discipline and missing an opportunity. She recommends you make a choice from a sustainability point when choosing what you are going to invest your time and money into. Her conservative approach and hard work has paid off. She gives back to the community in what she has coined 'grassroots service' by donating services to be a part of the community - San Diego in general and then in each of the areas where she has Centers. Suzanne said “ We have donated thousands of dollars' worth of our lessons and services to all sizes of charitable endeavors. From one person trying to raise money for their breast cancer walk team to larger groups. We support our local chambers and local golf groups as well.” Recently, she sponsored a box for the hole-in-one tournament for Operation Game On that brings the game of golf to injured service men and women. Also, last October she worked with Susan G. Komen and for every person who purchased an evaluation from them that entire month, they donated 100% of the proceeds. One of her biggest goals for the next 3 years is to make available specialized equipment that allows a paraplegic to "stand up" enabling them to address and swing a golf club. There are many organizations out there trying to use golf as a therapy for physical and mental rehabbing of war veterans and she would like to be involved with that. The three locations of Suzanne's GolfTec centers are in Rancho Bernardo, Golden Triangle (near UTC) and the newest location in Encinitas. She was a client first and seeing the value of the services and products offered, she became an owner. To improve your golf game visit the website: golftec.com

San Diego

Her choice of believing 'if it sounds too good to be true then it probably is' helped her choose a franchise business with realistic goals. Keeping within her financial range and the benefits of the royalties paid monthly to the franchisor are important factors. Asking all your questions, which she believes is one of her strengths, will lead you to a franchise that is a fit. Suzanne references the home remodeling theory when talking about the financial aspect of starting a business; do not tear down half of your house if you can't afford to rebuild it and when you do start a remodel, always know it will take more time than you originally planned. She stated that using a three and five year financial plan is a critical point. Allowing three years to build your business, at the five year point with responsible financial decisions could indicate the business will survive. Cash flow management is important. Always knowing you will have financial responsibilities such as replacing equipment, buying new computers and other matters to keep the business operational is key. A seasonal business is especially sensitive to managing cash flow. Suzanne expressed one of her biggest worries is that her employees' livelihoods depend on her decisions and emphasizes the importance of properly managing money.

If the time has come to move up to your dream home, you will need to sell your current house quickly and face the dilemma of having it ready to show. One of the best decisions you can make when putting your home on the market is to invest in a professional home staging company to help make your home as desirable as possible. Some sellers will argue that it is their home and therefore they would be the most qualified to make it appealing to potential buyers. However, studies have proven that “once you live in a space for more than two years it becomes clouded by emotions and memories, and you are therefore not objective when preparing your home for sale.” There are those who wonder if it is truly worth the cost to hire a professional firm to spruce up your home before putting it on the market. According to the National Association of Realtors, the average staging investment that is between 1% and 3% of the home’s asking price will generate a return of 8% to 10% of the Sale price of the home! That means when a seller with a $500,000 home invests $5,000 in preparing it to sell, they will typically see a $40,000 return! Professionally trained and certified designer, Sophia Segal, leads Creative Home Styles. Her personal style is exquisite and eclectic and she has admitted that she “truly loves a challenge!” Sophia is the driving force and inspiration behind Creative Home Styles. She has worked tirelessly to assemble a team of trusted craftsmen who perfectly execute even her most elaborate plans. Sophia was recently awarded a 2015 Houzz award - the equivalent of the Oscar in the world of Interior Design. This is no small feat when you consider that over 25 million monthly unique users selected Sophia and her firm out of more than 500,000 active home building, remodeling and design industry professionals. However, anyone who knows Sophia, or has used her services, is not surprised that she has received this well-deserved honor. There are some people who can turn an ordinary space into an extraordinary work of art. Sophia Segal is one of these individuals. So if you are in the market to sell your home, or perhaps you simply want to fall back in love with the space you are already in, Sophia and her crew at Creative Home Styles will transform your space beautifully and cost effectively, sometimes adding a few unique pieces, but often just utilizing what you already own.

Woman

As a client, not just the owner the business she purchased - one center with one employee - was a solid beginning. Three and a half years later she has three centers and is in the process of bringing her total to eleven employees. Having a full-time job that she loves plus buying a business doing what she has a passion for became her reality. Suzanne is a true believer that the common denominator always comes down to people. Attitudes shine through in relationships with clients as well as employees and she feels one of the benefits of being an owner is hiring people you like. The genesis of her search for a business was to make smart choices. Keeping in mind that when purchasing a franchise the quality of people you interact with contributes to the success rate of the business.

Melissa Cizauskas: Answers To Some Tough Real Estate Questions By Lauren Essex ,

When it comes to finding a new home, the realtor you chose makes the difference between getting what you want and wishful thinking. We caught up with Melissa Cizauskas, celebrated realtor with Keller Williams Realty in Carmel Valley, for some important tips you need to know when buying a home − things most realtors don’t tell you.

What if you fall in love with a neighborhood, but there’s no homes available there? Melissa: “I encounter this all the time. But that doesn’t mean you give up. I work with my clients to put together a three-part plan to unearth potential sellers and learn about properties before they come on the market. First, I reach out to my network and other resources to find properties that may be sold in the near future. You’d be surprised how effective this can be! In parallel, I field a campaign directly to homeowners in the area inquiring about their interest in selling to a pre-qualified buyer. From calling and advertising to physically driving neighborhoods, I find my clients not just a house, but their new home, on or off the market. I’ll even go door to door if I have to!”

What if my financial position will be better in six months but I found the home of my dreams now? Melissa: “Get creative! It’s a manageable situation. I worked with a local business owner who, for tax reasons, was short on cash flow but had plenty of equity. She had been turned down from three lenders when she found me. I turned this situation into a win-win with a little creative problem solving. We were able to negotiate a six-month rental agreement with an option to buy. I’m pleased to say that my client (and now a friend for life) enjoyed Thanksgiving in her new home surrounded by her family. It makes me so happy to make a difference for others.”

What’s involved in listing my house? Does it really matter who I work with? Melissa: “Finding the best buyer for your home means real money to you. While everyone has a realtor in their social circles, I wouldn’t trust this responsibility to just anyone. As a certified Luxury

Real Estate Agent, my clientele demand an exceptionally high standard of care and excellence in service. In fact, I’ve been called the Nordstrom’s of Real Estate! I market properties for my sellers as I would my own with the skill to negotiate on their behalf, manage all personalities and details of escrow, and guide every transaction to a successful closing.”

When cash flow is an option but I want a home for my future, what can I do? Melissa: “This is a common scenario. From growing families to newly divorced moms to wanting more space, many people look for the long term, even though it might be a squeeze to afford now. I work my connections and relationships to find the right lender who has options for financing. Maybe we’d consider a seven year arm or balloon payment to make your home affordable for you now? The good news is that I have a 100% success rate to-date in closing transactions for my clients.” It’s clear that Melissa loves what she does because helping others matters. In Melissa’s own words, “I am proud to say I call all my past clients friends. It makes what I do, what I love.” Have a question for Melissa? The Voluptuous Bride Guide By Danielle Springer

Don't Be Intimidated By The Number: Bridal sizing is different that regular clothing sizing. So if you are normally a size 10 you will require a minimum of one to two sizes higher for your wedding dress. So a size 10 in other clothing can easily be a size 14 in a wedding dress, so don't let the size upset you. What is most important is how the dress looks and feels and that you feel your most beautiful on your wedding day.

Buying Off-The-Rack is a Good Thing: The typical wait time when ordering a bridal gown from a traditional bridal store is 3-5 months. So once you find that perfect dress, you have some time to worry about what it will actually look like when it arrives in your size. Will it be as pretty as you remembered when you tried it on 5 months ago? Will it arrive on time? What if it arrives in the wrong color or size, and has to be reordered? With an off-the-rack dress, you have it in your hands when you leave, and all you need to worry about is final fittings for your special day. When you consider that the wedding design is often planned around the look of the dress, having the dress in hand allows you to immediately work on the rest of the details and lowers the stress involved in getting all of the details completed on time. Another plus to off-the-rack dresses is the amazing price. Off-the-rack, being more affordable, gives you the ability to put more money towards the many unexpected big day expenses. Do not Feel like You Always Have to Cover Your Arms: Many brides will feel pressured to cover their arms when selecting a wedding dress. In reality, this doesn’t make you look slimmer, but instead, draws more attention to a body part that you may feel self-conscious about. So when you are picking out your wedding dress, pick the dress you fall in love with and don’t select the gown based on the amount of fabric around your arms. It is more than okay to feel comfortable in your own skin, without all that pesky fabric! Danielle Springer is the Owner of Unveiled Bridal, “Exclusively for the Voluptuous Bride”, in Escondido, California. Her store specifically carries women’s sizes 14 & up. Keep in mind that if you normally wear a size 10 you will most likely need a size 14 wedding dress, since they are cut smaller than regular garments. Wedding Gowns, Mother of the Bride, Mother of the Groom, and Special Occasion are all available off-the-rack, along with a full line of wedding accessories. Unveiled specializes in Designer Wedding Gowns that are off-the-rack at great prices, so you can try on your dress today and take it home with you right after. Call NOW to schedule your appointment (442) 999-5588!

San Diego

Do Not Let a Bridal Store Tell You That Your Only Choice is to Order: You need to find the right store that will allow you to try on as many dresses as you want. Since most stores only stock small sizes, trying on a dress which may be 4 or 5 sizes smaller than you wear will give you absolutely no idea what the dress will actually look like when you get it in your correct size. Most stores, however, will undoubtedly suggest that you order the dress that you like most, in spite of the fact that you have never actually seen it properly fit. Beware of stores who follow this practice, and shop at bridal boutiques that cater specifically to larger sizes because you should never feel bad about not being a size other than your own. Keep in mind, in conventional shops, if you order a dress and don’t like it upon arrival, you cannot return it.

Woman

Don’t Settle: Just because you are not a size 6, does not mean you need to settle when choosing the perfect dress for your special day. Don’t be afraid to visit numerous bridal stores and (if necessary) don’t feel bad about walking out without making a purchase. Not only do you have to fall in love with your dress, it has to make you feel like a queen. Don’t merely pick a dress because it is the only one that fits: Know that you have options when shopping for your gown and one of those options must be to never compromise.

Women who grow up poorly mothered often experience lingering distress and haunting issues as a result. When mothers are unable to be nurturing or empathic, daughters struggle. Surprisingly, the most effective response is the one that seems the most counterintuitive. What I’ve learned is this: rather than ignore the painful feelings, embrace the truth of what you’ve experienced so it doesn’t continue to haunt you. I’m often asked: What is the point of exploring this pain, of rehashing something that happened in childhood? The point is that we had to adapt to this difficult situation, in many ways raising ourselves, perhaps bending over backwards to please mom, or rebelling against her requests. As adults we often don’t recalibrate our thoughts and behavior, perhaps continuing to be an excessive people pleaser or fighting a battle that was lost long ago. The key to thriving as a ghost-daughter is to become empowered by tapping into your courage, strength, and resilience. In the process of reinventing yourself you find out who you truly are and how to get what you didn’t receive as a child. If you’re ready to thrive from the experience of being raised by a ghost, I offer my personal and professional experience to help you do so, here’s how: • Read my book: Ghost Mothers: Healing From the Pain of a Mother Who Wasn’t Really There interweaves my story and the stories of others to show what it takes to heal. Available from Amazon and my website. • Attend a workshop: “Feel the Heal” integrates yogic wisdom with a cutting edge understanding of how to transcend this pain in a fun, positive, supportive setting. • Participate in individual therapy: benefit from my unique, individualized approach that expertly supports and guides your healing. • Utilize online support: www.facebook.com/ghostmothers The answers you discover will create a sense of strength inside you that will forever change your life. 2015: The Year of the Woman

Poised on the edge of greatness, the time for a new attitude and to embrace change is now By Shellie Hunt Photos courtesy of Shellie Hunt

It’s 2015, we are women hear us roar. While there is little doubt that we have come ‘A long way baby’– think Oprah, and Indira Gandhi, and Mother Teresa – as a gender we do have a ways to go. It's all about making choices in this day and age whether it's in our personal lives or in business. Statistics from the Department for Professional Employees, AFL-CIO, tells us, women for the first time in history make up more than half of the professional and technical workforce in the United States. However, there are areas to tackle and changes to enforce; such as striving to become as equally compensated as our male counterparts – be it in the small business environment or in Corporate America. The time is now and yes, we are worth it. I know we can change the stats if we set our minds to it and lead by design.

Important Stats Consider these numbers from the National Association of Women Business Owners: • There are 7.8 million women owned businesses in the United States which reflects a 20.1 percent increase from 2002 to 2007. • Women-owned businesses make up more than half (52.0 percent) of all businesses in healthcare and social assistance. • The other top industries for women include educational services (45.9 percent of all businesses are women-owned,) administrative and support and waste management and remediation services, (37.0 percent), retail trade (34.4 percent), and arts, entertainment, and recreation (30.4 percent).

The Next Frontier

As a woman in business, I know it is more than possible to make a change and propel these numbers even further with the right mindset, dedication and networking. All it requires for positive progress and change is for a few women to step forward in camaraderie. One woman can make a difference but a group of women can make a movement. It is time for us to join together, mentor to and from other women, and lead into the next frontier. For example, we assist women on a global level through our Women of Global Change. But stateside we are helping women and their businesses and lives become much more rewarding through ‘Success is by Design.’ As a business strategist, motivational speaker, and a women's leadership advocate, I try to empower women to be the best they can be and show them the steps on how to make it happen.

Women for Change

It all begins with changing your mindset - your attitude. You may have heard of the ‘Law of Attraction,’ and how positive thoughts can make a more positive result. However, there is more to the designs of success including learning the proven how-to’s used in business and relationships, as well as how these results can lead to even higher achievements. Ultimately, this can lead to additional wealth, happiness and a more fulfilled life. One of the tips I often give to my clients – who range from CEOs in big business to the smaller president of his or her own company – is to change

one's attitude. Why is attitude so important and why does the way we approach our lives and ourselves make such a difference in the results that we get in our lives? If you want to change your results and fast track your success it all starts with attitude: Our way of thinking affects our feelings, which in turn affects our behaviors, which (ultimately) affects our results. The right perspective directly impacts how we mastermind with people; how we engage in teamwork, what self image we nurture, and more importantly, which actions we undertake in our private lives in the world at large. Because if you convince yourself that something is out of your reach, or outside of the scope of what you believe you deserve, you will not initiate actions toward making that real in your life If you want to make a change, go ahead, because you're not here to play small, you are here to serve larger than life. Begin by changing or revamping your attitude and perspective now. Before you know it, you will be part of those NAWBO stats and reaching out your hand to help women all around the globe and making even more of a difference in the grand scheme of things for all of us. As women living in the 21st century, we have the remarkable ability to live the life we’ve always dreamed of – we are empowered to be professionals, wives, mothers, athletes, and sometimes all of these simultaneously. Since giving is part of our nature we need to be careful that we aren’t trying to be all things to all people, and that we don’t let excessive stress cause us to become unhealthy. We must put ourselves first and make good self-care a priority, which includes eating nutritious foods, getting plenty of exercise, downtime and quality sleep, and maintaining a healthy weight. There’s nothing better than looking and feeling your best every single day - we are happier, more productive, and will live longer this way. If you do not fall into this category and are carrying more weight than you’d like, where do you turn? There are so many diet plans, weight loss programs, and quick-fix supplements out there. After helping clients successfully achieve and maintain their ideal weight for the last 21 years, I know that in order to be successful in this area, one must look within and establish what is really at the heart of their desire to lose weight and how committed they are to do so. Is it that you want to look good for a wedding or don’t feel good in your clothes anymore? Have low self-esteem and perhaps harshly compare yourself to others? Or do you have less energy than you used to, feel heavy and weighed down, feel frustrated with added body weight due to hormonal changes, or worse, are at risk for diabetes or other serious diseases? Whatever the reason, the most important ingredient for not only losing the weight but keeping it off, is your motivation and readiness to make life-long lifestyle changes. On a 1-10 scale (“10” being the highest where you’re willing to do whatever it takes to lose the weight and keep it off, and “1” meaning you say you want to lose weight but you’re not really serious about it), where do you fall? Studies show that of those who lose weight on a diet, only 15% keep it off after two years, and most gain back more. My approach is to coach clients step-by-step on making those livable changes in their diet and training all at the same time - for a long enough period of time to see visible and lasting changes in their energy, health and physique. Can you live with just one or two glasses of wine per week instead of that habitual glass or two every night? Are you doing the proper fat-burning interval workouts or just going through the motions on the treadmill? My LEANPower!® System not only contains meal plans, workouts, the best ways to burn fat and get into the best shape of your life, but is packed with the most current information on food additives, disease prevention, stress management and optimal health and wellness. Personal emPowerment comes from taking charge of your life and making lifestyle changes that will last so you can feel great every day and live a life that you love. You can be in the best physical and mental shape of your life if you want it bad enough. Your life may actually depend on it! Choosing Your Child's Entertainment By Jaime V. Habert Photos Courtesy of Laurenn Barker

Tip #2: Look for Important Lessons Within Your Literature A life lesson is usually something that comes from experience, but when you're between the ages of 2 and 6, they are generally few and far between. This is why picking a book which educates your child on an important aspect of life is so important. When going through school, children are faced with communicating with people who are different than they are. The acknowledgement that we are all different and yet, the same, is an integral part of personal growth. Locating a piece of literature which teaches the lesson of acceptance within our world helps children learn to relate to others. In Barker's, "My Friend Timmy” Lae Lae meets a new friend named Timmy who has special needs and learns how to be a supportive friend. This book gives children the ability to empathize with the character of Timmy through Lae Lae’s eyes and makes them aware of how similar all kids are inside, and how they all have the same needs and desires. Another book which expresses the importance of diversity is "My New Friend" where Lae Lae is introduced to a girl from a different cultural background. It is within this interaction that she learns about other nationalities and their own special traditions. Tip #3: Make Sure the Characters are Good Role Models Often, children see characters within a story and want to emulate their actions. The infamous flying scene in Peter Pan quickly comes to mind as the perfect example of why we need to be aware of what fascinates our children. Of course, that story taught the importance of accepting responsibility and that growing up doesn't have to mean losing yourself in the process. Good role models come in all forms, from sports icons to everyday heroes, and it is important to display to children the reasons why a character is worth admiring. Find out why their presence is admirable and make sure to communicate that to your child.

All of the Lae Lae books are about simple childhood experiences that children will relate to. There are currently seven books in the Lae Lae collection with more on the way. Each 44 page book features a simple story, activities, fun facts and teachable moment suggestions. Laurenn Prater Barker's tips for choosing your child's literature come from an impressive background. Barker held a high-level executive position as a P.R. Director and blazed trails as the only female associate within a prominent international consulting firm. After conquering the corporate world, Barker followed her desire to express herself artistically and became a full-time sculptor and custom jewelry designer where she recently completed commissioned pieces for Miss Rodeo USA and Mrs. Globe South Africa. Most importantly, however, she is a passionate children's book author and illustrator. Barker's accomplishments are the catalyst for creating a character of depth and intelligence for young children to relate to and learn from. Ms. Barker donates a percentage of her book proceeds to animal, environmental and children’s causes. Tip #1: Pick A Topic of Interest to Your Child You have to look at what excites your child and where their passions lie. If you find that every time you start making dinner, your child jumps up to help, then perhaps picking a book which focuses on the topic of cooking would be a good choice. You can get your child to learn about life through cooking, like in the Barker penned, "Cooking Fun". This book, one within the delightful Lae Lae series, teaches children the importance of healthy foods and to safe cooking protocol with recipes from several countries included in the book. Your kids are guaranteed to be hooked on the entertaining interactions between Lae Lae and her mother as they cook up some fun!

In Barker's popular book, "My New Puppy", we see the power of Lae Lae's loving demeanor and her maturity when taking on the responsibility of pet ownership. The traits, such as trustworthiness and accountability, displayed by Lae Lae are definitely admirable aspects of a main character.

In today's technologically obsessed world, it seems that children are focused more on entertainment, than education. Keeping a child focused on the value of their education seems a daunting task but it doesn't have to be. Choosing a form of literary entertainment which educates effectively is an essential part of proper parental guidance, and with tips from noted children's book author, Laurenn Prater Barker, it's never been simpler.

Paula Ruthenberg worked her way up the corporate ladder in hotels, originally starting in sales for events at Marriott International, to become the Director of Sales for R.A.Rauch & Associates, Inc. The company, whose headquarters are in San Diego, offers a full range of hospitality management services across the nation. Paula’s passion for what she does is directly reflected in how she tackles her career head-on. She moved to San Diego from Brazil in 1997, and went on to graduate from San Diego State University with a degree in Hospitality and Tourism Management. After graduation she worked with Marriott International for six years in the sales and events department; while there she was given spectacular training on how to provide quality customer service. After her time at Marriott Paula worked with Jim Burba as his Conference Manager (Burba is one of the top Hotel Investment Consultants in the world). A woman of many talents, Paula has learned from each of her previous careers and continues to focus on her “keys to success” as she works for R.A. Rauch & Associates, Inc. “I provide an outstanding customer service before the group arrives, during the group’s stay, and make sure they leave the hotel happy. People nowadays want an experience when staying in a hotel. You can have a great product, but if you are not giving them excellent customer service, they will not come back.” Another very important factor to Paula is honesty and integrity. She is very upfront when it comes to educating her clients on contract clauses, cancel-

lation policies and other factors involved in the contract negotiation between the client and the hotel. "Clients will feel that I am helping them achieve their goals, and they will appreciate the attention to detail throughout the whole sales process". In the hospitality business, it is all about relationships, so providing great customer service it's a must. Her two hotel properties that she sells both keep customers coming back to stay with their luxurious décor and top-notch customer service. The Keating, the Italian style hotel located in the heart of the historic Gaslamp District, offers chic and modern stanzas and suites. “The Keating offers an unforgettable escape into Italian design; Soho style and California sex appeal combined with signature sophistication and personalized service.” Her second property the El Cordova Hotel, which is a Spanish escape, had a fascinating start when it was originally built as a retirement mansion for wealthy industrialist Elisha Babcock in 1902. El Cordova has since expanded and has been renovated to become the serene Spanish Village hotel that it is today. “I am ambitious and I strive for excellence. I know I can always improve myself and I strive for continuous learning by attending seminars, sales trainings and learning new trends in the industry.”

Many of our readers had questions regarding the home buying process. One of the most common inquiries we encountered was on the topic of Pre-Qualification vs Pre-Approved. Our readers wanted to know if they should get Pre-Approved before searching for a home or find the home they want and then approach their lending source. Pre-qualification is a quick conversation with a Loan Officer or even a loan application, but no financials are provided. Lynn often is asked this very question and she simply replied “In today’s fast paced, ever changing market buyers need to know that they can actually get financing to buy a home AND get pre-approved to make an offer. The lending guidelines continue to evolve in response to the mortgage melt-down of 2008. By submitting your income, asset and credit documentation to a Lender ahead of time, you can virtually eliminate any surprises or loan fallout because your loan file will be reviewed and underwritten ahead of time to ensure you qualify. Buyers also need to know what the total monthly payment will be on any given price point and that is important to know ahead of time so you can stay within the budget you set. This creates realistic expectations that you and your Realtor can work with.” Many home owners realize the importance of living within their means. This is truly a way to assure that when you find that perfect dream home you are not buying into a situation which will become a financial nightmare. Lynn has been through tough economies having started in the banking industry in 1987. She is aware of all of the pitfalls and takes the personal approach with each of her clients. Lynn and her husband John, a former Marine who served our country during the first Gulf War, have been working side by side for the past eleven years. Prior to working for Movement Mortgage John worked in Law Enforcement and Lynn worked for another Mortgage company. So I had to ask why they chose Movement Mortgage with so many possible choices out there. Lynn smiled, “There were many reasons why I decided to work with Movement Mortgage.

The main reason was their process: Six hour underwriting and seven business days to process loans and get them cleared to close. The goal is to make sure families have a great experience with their home buying process. Movement Mortgage approves their loans upfront before the buyer finds a home, removing all the guess-work. The ability to consistently close a loan in 10 days, 17 days or 30 days, is what sets Movement Mortgage apart from the competition. It removes the stress off the buyer, seller and the realtors. Another driving force in my decision was the Leadership and clear direction of the company and the many ways they give back to the communities in which we do business in.”

Buying a home is one of the biggest purchases of a lifetime, so when the time comes to make that move, it is comforting to know that you are going into the deal with your eyes wide open and prepared in every possible way. We had the opportunity to speak with one of the most experienced and respected Loan Officers in San Diego, Lynn Schuler of Movement Mortgage.

When you talk to Lynn, you can clearly see the passion in her eyes as she speaks about this career she has worked at for over 25 years. “As I moved up in the ranks of various banks throughout the years, it became overwhelmingly obvious that home loans were my passion. I love being able to see the 1st time buyer sign their closing documents with tears in their eyes because they can’t believe they really own their first home. I love watching my clients’ families grow in size and I get to see the house they are upsizing to. It’s such a joy to be the Trusted Advisor to my clients’ mortgage needs.” Lynn specializes in every loan product from Conventional, Jumbo, FHA, VA and Renovation Loans. Whatever your needs are, she can help find a way to meet them. There is only one other subject that we spoke on that brought the same sparkle to her eyes and that was when she spoke of her two beautiful boys Jacob, 13, and Zachary 9, and of course her husband John. Family is so important to Lynn which was so evident with her closing words, “Faith, family, community, commitment and integrity and of course having fun and living life to the fullest is what it’s all about.” For More Information on getting Pre-Approved, or for help with any of your mortgage needs contact Lynn Lynn Schuler Sr. Loan Officer Lynn.Schuler@Movement.com Direct: 760-707-8548 EFax: 619-821-2023 NMLS # 76885 / CA –DOC # 76885 www.Movement.com/Lynn.Schuler

Cancer Fighting Foods! Written by Chef Marian Blogging at ChefMarian.com

Over 300 blogs and 3 Cookbooks later, I am still understanding how to get your body to actually use the nutrients from what we eat, how to stabilize your blood sugar, use less sugar because sugar equals inflammation and let your ‘Meatless Mondays' expand through Thursday as a habit just to boost your health.

All it takes is tiny lifestyle changes, tiny shifts in what you buy and cook to benefit your health without denying yourself the joy of eating and drinking. I do continuous research to see what new studies have come out that may change what I think. (This article reflects what I know at this time to be true). And why go towards a vegan lifestyle? To prevent cancer and reclaim your health. So, where do I start? How about with an authority - the American Institute for Cancer Research. They back up the idea that disease cannot grow in an alkaline body. And guess what's alkaline? Water, Fruits and Vegetables. AICR added to their existing table of the latest findings to their list of apples, blueberries, cranberries, grapefruit and cherries. They also recommend cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower. Just buy them. If they're in the house, you'll either eat them, or figure out how to use them in a recipe. Experimenting is fun! Newly released info has added grapes, garlic, green tea and red wine to that list. But the ingredients I will focus on in this article are some of my favorites: Garlic, Wine, and Tomatoes. Some research from the National Cancer Institute has found that eating tomatoes may help protect men from prostate cancer.... tomatoes contain a particularly high concentration of an effective antioxidant called lycopene. Dr. Andrew Weil reminds us that lycopene has “a greater-than-average ability to ’quench’ free radicals that cause damage to cells. Excessive free radical damage has been implicated in heart disease, cancer, as well as accelerated aging”. I want to remind you to put a drop or two of olive oil with those tomatoes to help release the lycopene. Next? Garlic. And make sure garlic goes in at the end or low and slow throughout the cooking process. You can't do anything with overcooked garlic that turns bitter! Several large studies have found that those who eat more garlic are less likely to develop various kinds of cancer". Experts don’t know how much you need to eat to prevent cancer, but a clove a day is recommended. Red wine? According to the National Cancer Institute, "resveratrol found in red wine (moderate amounts) may be useful in keeping cancer from beginning or spreading". Think of all the simple and delicious additions you can make: • Breakfast - Broiled Tomatoes topped with a minimal amount of Parmigiano Reggiano and olive oil. Add small squares of bread or crackers - I love Ezekiel, for a healthy sprouted experience. • Lunch - Lentils (packaged from Trader Joe's) with caramelized onions, broccoli, garlic, beets, and other veggies that happen to be in your fridge.

• Appetizers - Roasted Garlic with a multi grain baguette and a brilliant glass of pinot noir. • Veggies - Cauliflower and Garlic Puree looks like smashed Potatoes. Don't forget the nutmeg! • Quinoa as your protein, with caramelized onions, sweet potatoes and broccoli. • Holidays - There are so many ways to skip the animal protein and fat (recipe on ChefMarian.com). They even make vegan marshmallows now, to top a freshly made sweet potato pie. Don't forget what the AICR says: "Veggies can protect you from the free radicals that can damage your cells’ DNA..... and also encourage cancer cells to die". So Food is Your Best Medicine! Seriously! Happy Eating, Chef Marian Please use your own judgment and check with your doctor before following any recommendations anyone makes. Living an Authentic Life By Annie Fonte Photo Courtesy of Annie Fonte

come to understand that life and things and events take on the meaning that we give to them....and the meaning that we give them comes from what we are taught to believe. Over time, we buy into this personal conditioning and we begin to live ego-centered lives. I invite you to rid your mind of its clutter, lift the weight of this unnecessary burden and open your heart to the great joy and peace that being present in each and every moment freely offers. Live gracefully and unencumbered.

Woman

It is my belief that our life offers us endless amounts of freedom, growth and joy. Remember as a kid, when the mainstay of each day was to live with reckless abandon and fearlessly explore the world and all that it had to offer? The daily mission of creating enchanted experiences gave life to super hero capes and turned your Mom's old dresses, shoes and jewelry into a treasure trove of possibilities. When given a blank sheet of paper and a box of crayons you immediately turned into an untamed artist. And then something happens: We grow out of childhood, stumble through our teens, hit milestone ages like 18 and 21, leave home, go off to college, get jobs, fall in love, get married and have kids only to discover that this adulthood gig isn't all it was hyped up to be. We succumb to the stifling of our childhood spirit by our parents, teachers and social interactions and we forget what it is like to be a kid. Human conditioning and cultural myths become dominant in our lives. Our sense of wonder and genuineness diminishes as we gain knowledge. Our beliefs are fear based and we find ourselves overscheduled, overworked and overwhelmed. We are reluctant to take responsibility for the choices we have made; each choice ultimately creating the life that we lead. If I may offer some expert advice - it is this: It is paradoxical and yet true, that when you empty your head of needing, wanting, or desiring more and accept that all you have is all you need; abundance will then show up in your life. As humans we are conditioned to "think" that if only we could have this or that, life will be better. That new car, outfit, job, boyfriend, girlfriend or endless other material items will make you happy, when in fact happiness is a choice. Do you want to be happy? Then decide to be happy! Wanting things outside of yourself is fear based. You become a stranger to your true essence when you allow the ego to orchestrate your daily living. This ego character can appear to be quite charming and very often convincing. However the ego thrives when playing on your fears, persuading you that there is a lacking in your life and influencing you that you are not enough. Don't drink the Kool-Aid. Run on Empty. Empty yourself of needing or wanting and create the space for the unlimited abundance that is available to you. And, when it shows up, recognize, and accept it with graciousness. Abundance is like a butterfly...if you chase it or grasp for it, it becomes illusive. If you leave it alone it will come to settle on your shoulder. Notice what calls you away from the noise and chaos in the world. There is sanctity in unbroken silence. Allow space for things that speak to your heart and do things which give you peace. There is grace in permitting your life to flow unassisted by your mind and your thinking. It is only in your thoughts (which create your beliefs) that things take on a significance that they don't have in and of themselves. Many years ago while attending a weekend seminar the speaker said, "Life is empty and meaningless." At the time I did not embrace the wisdom of those simple words. However, I have

Bobbye &Tonilee :

The Power of Love There are several life lessons that can be learned by spending time with Bobbye Brooks and Tonilee Adamson. They are two of the most friendly and welcoming women I have ever met. From our first meeting I could sense that there was something unique about them. Our first encounter was in a typical business meeting in their office conference room. Their company was Media 4 women, with a main goal of helping women start their own businesses, market and brand themselves, and take their ideas to the next level. As the Publisher and Editor of a women’s magazine I was intrigued by what they were doing for local women, and after learning their story I was even more impressed. Having met through their ministry work, their compassion was evident, but their business acumen and marketing genius made them perfectly suited for their field. Over the past four years since we have met I have watched Bobbye and Tonilee teach the following lessons to their client, attendees at their sold out conferences, and over their Daily Disciples radio show on KPRZ 1210AM from 10 am to 10:30 am daily. 1.Women can accomplish whatever they set out to with perseverance and faith 2.Women working together can accomplish even greater things. 3.There is nothing greater than the Power of Love. This is quite obvious with Bobbye and Tonilee, as they host the largest women’s event in San Diego annually and just celebrated their 10 year anniversary with their “Power of Love” conference, which is also launching in 12 major cities in 2015. Bobbye and Tonilee are business partners who have co-founded several companies, including one of the largest Christian Women’s Ministries in the world, Daily Disciples Ministries, Inc., and Media 4 Women Enterprises, an award winning Marketing and Media company. As speakers, trainers, authors, radio hosts and entrepreneurs, Bobbye and Tonilee have a passionate drive to empower women to reach their goals and fulfill their dreams. They travel and speak on women’s issues throughout the year, helping women to find freedom, get a new start and move forward in their lives. They work and partner with numerous organizations to assist in helping meet the needs of women and children. Their most recent partnership is with ABC Television, locally and nationally, to produce television content as well as launch a global digital platform to reach women throughout the world. Brett’s Top 10 Tips for Looking Good and Feeling Great in 2015! 1. Just Get Moving! Starting a new fitness program can be daunting. With all of the things you have to do, all of that information can lead to overload. The simple and best way to start is to just get moving and increase your general activity level throughout the day. Taking a longer walk after lunch or dinner--taking the stairs instead of an elevator--standing while on the phone or when someone walks into your office--parking a little farther than your destination--little things that can add up and make a big difference in helping you move and feel better. 2. Have an Accountability Buddy. This will help you stick with a plan. You and your workout buddy both promise not to let the other skip a workout. This buddy may zbe a friend with similar goals to yours, a family member, co- worker or even a fitness professional who will motivate you to stay on track. 3. Choose Activities You Enjoy. And do them! Again and again! Nothing can short- circuit your workout plan faster than a boring, non-eventful activity. Even if it's completely new (but sounds interesting) you're more likely to stick with something you enjoy. Don't be afraid of trying a bunch of things to see what connects with you. 4. Pick a Pro--especially if you're just getting started, unsure or just unaccustomed to having regular activity in your life. Investing in a Certified Fitness Professional can get you started on the right foot...helping you build a solid foundation, focus on your goals and prevent injury. Word-of-mouth and referrals from trusted family and friends is best way to find the best pro for you.

Personal Trainer Tips I used to think personal trainers were for other people.

5. Set Your Goals! Write these ideas down and be specific: How many pounds? Dress sizes? Body fat percentage? Whatever it is, get it down on paper. Then post the goals, completion date and workouts completed to date in places you see regularly. Consistent reinforcement is the key to your success.

Not me. I’m motivated to work out on my own, thank you. I don’t need some guy with six-pack abs watching my every bicep curl.

6. Be Relentless--in your dedication to succeeding. Set your schedule. Stick with it. No excuses. Make your workouts as important as showing up for work, being with your family or having fun.

Well, last year that all changed when I realized I needed help. Following multiple surgeries, I had developed aches, pains and muscle weaknesses that only seemed to get worse the harder I pushed on my own at the gym. Even swimming left me with a stiff neck and a knot in my back.

7. No 4-Letter Words! Banish the words CAN’T, DON’T and WON’T from your vocabulary. It may take some self-talk and gentle reminders, but focus on what you CAN, WILL and WANT to do: One step at a time.

Frustrated, I asked for advice from one of my fit friends; his recommendation? You guessed it—a personal fitness trainer. Desperate, I took his advice and called Bret Smith, a credentialed instructor and owner of “Move Strong Studio” in San Diego. Bret quickly assessed my situation and gave me simple, corrective exercises I could do at home. After several sessions with “my” personal trainer, I began to feel better, stronger and happier as my aches and pains subsided. Because of Brett’s personal attention and expertise, I’m grateful to be back hiking, biking and swimming strong. As I’ve gotten to know Brett, it’s clear he’s more than a fitness trainer. Not only is he knowledgeable on most aspects of health and fitness, he’s a wonderful (but gentle!) motivator! I’ve asked Bret to share some of the tips he gives his clients to help them start and stick with a fitness program.

8. Prepare For the Journey. Consider your new undertaking as the journey of a lifetime. As you and your journey love and grow, you'll explore new and exciting ways to stay happy, healthy and fit along the way. One of the highest rates of success in sticking with a fitness and wellness plan is sharing it with a group, partner, friend or spouse. Be part of a team and see how everyone benefits. 9. Make it Social. We are social creatures and one of the highest rates of success in sticking with a fitness and wellness plan is sharing it with a group, partner, friend or spouse. Make them part of Your Team and see how everyone benefits. 10. Ignore the Hype. If you are easily influenced by the media buzz of a new fad diet or the latest fitness gadgets, stop and ask two simple questions: For whom and for what? These programs and equipment promise you success with little time or effort. The truth is, it takes time, work, dedication and determination. No diet or trendy gadget will change that. There are no shortcuts to success...only detours and u-turns if you fall prey to the hype.

Fabulous Skin at Any Age By Barbara Victoria Galagusz Photo Courtesy of Barbara Galagusz

20’s:

This is a good time to begin an anti-aging skin care regimen. You may be still dealing with occasional acne breakouts and may be starting to see fine lines, but your skin cells regenerate regularly, giving you an even texture and a rosy glow. It is important to start a skin care regimen so that it becomes a positive habit. The way you care for your skin now will determine what it will look like for the rest of your life. Periodically get a facial for deep cleansing and exfoliation. Daily Routine • Use an oil based cleanser to lift makeup and debris and then follow with a soap free gel cleanser or a cleanser with salicylic acid or clay based depending on how oily you are. • Choose a moisturizer that is non - irritating and contains hyaluronic acid that will plump your skin without clogging your pores. • Apply a sunscreen of at least SPF 15 every day to minimize sun damage and hyperpigmentation (brown spots). It is okay to use a moisturizer with SPF but SPF in your foundation is probably not enough. Use a separate product. • Use an eye cream to protect the sensitive area under your eyes. • Select a purifying masque for breakout areas: Spot treat or treat entire face as needed.

30’s:

Your skin cells are not turning over as quickly and there is some loss of collagen and your complexion looks a little dull. It is important to step up exfoliation with products that contain retinol or alphahydroxy acid. Watch for acne that is triggered by stress and also for hyperpigmentation (brown spots) and melasma (areas of brown discoloration). Start getting facials on a regular basis for skin maintenance. Daily Routine • Use a gentle, cream cleanser and spot any breakout areas with a clay based cleanser. • Exfoliate once or twice a week with a product that contains papain, (enzyme which encourages cell turnover and opens clogged pores), phytic acid (brightening), salicylic or glycolic acid. • Select a moisturizer which is not too heavy but contains peptides, an anti-aging ingredient that helps feed the skin. • Be diligent about wearing sunscreen with SPF30 especially if you are using retinol or alpha-hydroxy acid. • Address lines around eyes with a vitamin, silicone based eye cream.

40’s:

Not only are your skin cells not turning over as fast and fine lines, wrinkles, brown spots and uneven skin tone are visible but your hormones are creating havoc on your skin. You are losing some of your glow. In your 40’s, you are typically perimenopausal resulting in estrogen levels decreasing, leading to increased dryness and dehydration. Sensitive skin, acne and rosacea can also be present. Think about mild peels, micro current and anti-aging facials.

Daily Routine • In the morning use a two in one exfoliating cleanser that resurfaces. In the evening use a cream cleanser that soothes and moisturizes. • Use a hydrating, antioxidant vitamin toner before your moisturizer and night cream. • Select a moisturizer that contains one or more anti-aging ingredients: peptides (to stimulate collagen), Retinol (to stimulate cell turnover and address acne), Vitamin C (stimulates collagen, an antioxidant), Vitamin E (antioxidant) and SPF30 (to block UV rays). • At night use a medium weight night cream. If not using a moisturizer with Retinol, consider use of a prescription Retinoid. • Add an eye cream with Retinol and peptides to treat lines, puffiness and dark shadows.

50’s:

Cell turnover is slow and your complexion has lost elasticity. Skin is dryer with an increase in wrinkles, large pores and sagging skin. You are in menopause or are postmenopausal. You have brown spots, fine spider veins and may have rosacea and acne. You generally feel good but then look in the mirror and don’t like what you see. Don’t give up, it is never too late to stop the progression of damage you already have. Select products that contain peptides, caffeine, Vitamin C, antioxidants, botanicals and Retinol. These ingredients will encourage collagen production and also reduce the production of harmful enzymes that can speed up the aging process. Consider medium grade peels, laser for exfoliation and to stimulate collagen, and continue with performance oriented facials and high quality skin care products which exfoliate, replenish and hydrate. Daily Routine • In the morning use a two in one exfoliating cleanser that resurfaces. Use a hydrating, antioxidant vitamin toner before applying moisturizer and night cream. In the evening use a cream cleanser that soothes and replenishes lipids. • Use a hydrating, antioxidant vitamin toner before your moisturizer and night cream. • Under your moisturizer, select a hydrating or firming serum. Then add a moisturizer that contains anti-aging ingredients: peptides, Retinol, Vitamin C and SPF30. • Add a nighttime replenishing peptide serum and for very dry skin apply a heavy weight cream with peptides. If not using a moisturizer with Retinol, consider use of a prescription Retinoid (if using prescription Retinoid don’t use a peptide serum). • Add an eye cream with Retinol and peptides to treat lines, puffiness and dark shadows. • Try a vitamin masque to nourish, improve elasticity and combat dryness.

Are You a Diva Mom? 6 Tips to Becoming High Maintenance By Lisa Matar

Your car

Your husband goes to work in his 9-11. You are still schlepping around in a dirty minivan. what’s wrong with this picture? If you would be in embarrassed to be seen driving this car outside the parking lot of your preschool, it’s time to diva up your ride. You deserve it. Let’s get real. I suggest a smaller car than you might gravitate towards. That way, there will not be any room for your children’s excess. Excess items include 45 toys, shoes, socks, food wrappers, multiple change of clothes, etc… You are showing your children you have standards.

2.

Get dressed

If you are regularly seen looking haggard in the checkout line at the grocery store at 1pm, still in your sweaty gym clothes, it’s time to diva up your look. It doesn’t matter if you are going to Costco and the dry cleaner or if you are paying bills alone in the house while the kids are at school. If you spend 15 minutes of effort to put on cute jeans with a chic sweater and some fun accessories you will feel more like a diva. Your spirit will brighten and your day will become more productive.

3.

5.

Get your pamper on

Go to the spa, indulge in a trip to the nail salon or enjoy a fabulous massage REGULARLY. This may require your husband’s assistance with the children. Do not feel guilty. You are concerned they will miss you, but do not let this stop you from finding diva time. They actually won’t miss you once they get going on with their games and toys. We all need time to be quiet, reflect and find our inner zen. This is well deserved time that is a basic requirement. Get going. Set an appointment today.

6.

Eat well

Set the standard for what you allow to enter your mouth. If you are still filling up on your kid’s left over chicken nuggets and mac n cheese, reject this! You are what you eat, and you deserve to eat real adult food. It is okay to set aside the time to make yourself a healthy meal. Make this happen and you will be feeding your hungry inner diva. What this comes down to is the standard you set for your life. If you only live for your children, you are selling yourself short. What will happen when your children become teenagers and they don’t need you as much? What will you do if you lose yourself completely over the years then your children grow into adults and move on. Who will you be left with? Take control of your independence now and show your children the importance of caring for yourself. After all, they will grow up to be just like you so show them how wonderful you really are.

Find an interest

If you are catching up with an old friend and the only thing you have to talk about is your children, we have a problem. Any person worth their weight finds a way to expand their mind. Take an online class, join group fitness, listen to a book in your car, volunteer on a non-profit board. Do not lose touch with adult reality. If you fail here, the next diva checklist item will become a permanent fixture.

4.

Get a therapist.

For some of us mothers of young children, you may feel your identity is slipping away. At one point in your life, you were a confident woman with dreams of rising high in your industry. You had an address book full of interesting friends to go to dinner with. You knew where your passport was and actually used it. Now, your dreams come true if your day only bears one tantrum, your children sleep by 9 and you gloriously sleep through the night. Outside of being a full-time mom, you have nothing to strive for. If you look in the mirror and wonder who that woman is, this is a diva emergency. If you feel lost in the shuffle of raising your children, if

you don’t recognize yourself because you have lost your diva way, call in for back up. Therapy is everything. (By the way, just about everyone you know is already in therapy so don’t think twice.)

Woman

For those women out there who have young children, have settled into their mommy roles, have just begun to get their bearings back and are now considering reclaiming their lives, the following list will lead you on the right path. This will allow you to raise the bar to the point where you are living a dignified, adult life yet again. The idea here is to accept some perks for yourself. High maintenance is not a bad thing. Would you prefer to be “low maintenance”? No way! Lets take a look at what we canto enjoy a civilized, mature existence while benefiting your entire family.

Being a first time mom was the greatest adventure I have ever undertaken. It was filled with new experiences, extreme emotions and unparalleled exhaustion. During my pregnancy people offered advice. Some of the advice was excellent and it could have served as a warning for what was to come. Some of it was terrible. I discarded the good advice and the horrendous advice with equal zeal. Discarding the good advice was my survival mechanism. If I had taken the good advice to heart I would have panicked, lost my way, and eventually strayed into oncoming traffic.

The Birth of Motherhood

Instead, I reveled in preparing for a beautiful new baby who would change my life in ways that I could not possibly have imagined. I created dreams for my child and hopes for his future. It was common for me to indulge myself in the imagined ease of having an infant to love and cuddle: The hopes and dreams were mine for a lifetime. The tranquility of mothering was mine for the two days I spent in the hospital while the nurses and doctors tended to me and my newborn. After three days the hospital forced me to take my child home. My fantasies vanished as rapidly as my waistline and the joy of sleepless nights, profound exhaustion, and tiny cries filled my world. I was grateful that I had taken a shower before I left the hospital because it was the last time I snuggled up to soap and shampoo for several days. My life underwent a metamorphosis rivaled only by the challenge I undertook when I vowed to love, honor, and change my spouse. The results were similar. Just as my lofty ideals about changing my spouse did not materialize I realized my carefully laid plans to maintain control over my environment had evaporated. When we first brought the baby home from the hospital my husband seemed like an angel. He popped out of bed to retrieve the baby from the bassinet and he made bottles and changed diapers at 2:48 am. Then, like all men, he became weary. As he succumbed to his exhaustion his enthusiasm for parenthood waned. At the height of his decline he teetered on the edge of infancy and I had trouble telling him apart from the baby. I solved this problem by reminding myself that only the baby wore diapers. As the days and nights passed I developed a stamina that defied logic. In the face of severe sleep deprivation I did everything that needed to be done on exactly 4 non-consecutive hours of sleep per night. Surprisingly, my husband did not keep pace. My sleep deprivation was compounded by my body’s decision that it was time to stop producing the adrenaline that had kept me going for the past three weeks. My hormones plummeted to normal levels and I began to cry. First I cried over the 4 non-consecutive hours of sleep. Next I cried because I now knew that a 40 year old man and a newborn could legitimately be considered twins. When I stopped crying long enough to look in the mirror I was reminded that I was no longer pregnant. The body staring back me seemed flawless. I was consoled until I tried to put on a pair of pants. The crying resumed. I realized I had to choose between continuing to wear my maternity clothes versus appearing in public naked. My thoughts immediately turned to diet and exercise. I quickly discarded the idea of exercise because that would require me to return to the gym in exercise clothing. Instead I embraced the idea of dieting and considered an expensive weight loss plan. I abandoned this when I realized that the only action I needed to take to lose weight was to put a fork full of food near my mouth. When I did, the baby cried. My husband’s meals were not interrupted because he did not choose to hear the baby cry. He instinctively knew that if he ignored the baby I would take care of the situation. And I did. And I am thin again.

Kapreeza...A Thing of Beauty

For decades now, the average American woman has considered bras and panties as just underwear – functional and utilitarian garments that are hidden and forgotten as soon as another layer goes on over them. In 2015 a growing number of women are quickly discovering the magic and excitement of high-quality lingerie, adding enhanced comfort and style.

Kapreeza Lingerie & Swimwear Specialty Shop, a beautifully quaint and amazing lingerie salon on Kettner Boulevard, located in Little Italy, embraces the opportunity for women to transform their traditional underwear into a perfect harmony of both day and night lingerie; providing garments to inspire work or leisure time while also selecting magnificent and dramatic lingerie for evening wear or a very special occasion or major dress up event. “Having grown up in Europe I was accustomed to having beautiful and wellmade products available to women of all ages, sizes, and incomes, and was so deeply dissatisfied and disappointed with the overall quality, fit, selection and imagination of lingerie available for women in San Diego,” states Renata Carlseen, owner. Allowing her frustration to spawn her entrepreneurial spirit, Renata opened Kapreeza five years ago, establishing a following based on her “hi-touch” commitment to comfort, proper fit and superior quality; supported by her unparalleled personalized customer service. Renata ensures her customers will have a truly personalized experience, uplifting their self-esteem, pride and beauty. “We allow women a way to adorn Lingerie, both beautifully and expressively at all times. Lingerie is a reflection of a woman’s sense of style and sensuality, even when other demands prevent them from showing it underneath their outer garments,” stated Renata.

San Diego

Only Kapreeza provides selections entirely from Europe; many one of a kind created by designers who have been crafting these for many generations. Renata is of European dissent, and has spent much time as a designer of women’s Lingerie. When a customer enters Kapreeza, having taken notice of the vibrant eyecatching window display street-side, they will be treated to a unique variety of captivating designs, in an array of colors, style and fabrics - all unique and truly very chic.

41

Inside the store, Kapreeza provides impactful designs for her customers. Renata hand selects each garment personally and carries seventy-five different sizes, reinforcing a perfect fit will always be an essential component of the lingerie experience. “The majority of bras sold in the US are made using stamped or molded cups and other cheap mass-producing processes that create poorly-fitting products that don’t provide lift and fall apart quickly. Each piece of lingerie that we carry is 100% hand-sewn from European fabric, which ensures the best possible fit and durability. “Where other lingerie options tend to fade in color, become loose, stretched out or fall apart in just months, our lingerie lasts much longer, retaining proper fit and color for years - with proper care. Creating a lifestyle moving away from always replacing cheap, disposable garments and buying highquality lingerie that will last much longer, give customers comfort and enjoyment in life; better use of money, time and the environment,” said Renata. Due to the nature of her lingerie, each piece is distinctly unique, offering specialized exclusive choices. Renata’s philosophy is one that fuses beauty and expressiveness with comfort for daily lifestyles. She totally understands every woman is different; therefore Renata emphasizes her in-store private personal changing areas, assisting her customers with finding a perfect fit, while enjoying a complete sense of coziness and relaxation to make the entire experience even more enjoyable. Renata wants her customers to leave wonderfully surprised with a newfound sense of confidence, beauty and self-esteem, regarding how truly elegant they feel! If you wish to begin adorning yourself with beautiful and striking day and nighttime lingerie, or are searching for a special gift, visit Kapreeza in Little Italy at 1772 Kettner Boulevard. San Diego’s Best Dressed Concierge By Tim Cotroneo Ask a guest staying at San Diego’s Westgate Hotel to describe the Chief Concierge and there is a good chance he or she will mention the word “colorful.” Not only is Shraddha Carlin’s personality as bright as a rainbow on a sunny day, this 11-year concierge veteran works behind her Louis VI vintage 1889 desk wearing silky Saris that scream one-of-a-kind style. “The Westgate receives guests from around the world. I was born in Zambia, and my first Westgate boss encouraged me to wear clothing representative of my native country. I now own over 100 saris, and wearing colorful clothing has sort of become my trademark,” Carlin said. Another attribute Carlin takes great pride in is keeping her Westgate guests happy. Carlin is a Hospitality, Sales, and Marketing International Award winner for service excellence. Whether she is arranging for a rental car, diagramming directions to downtown restaurants, or reserving tickets for a concert, Carlin is always smiling, professional, and looking good. In a hotel lobby environment which is accented with Baccarat crystal chandeliers, a Steinway piano, and lavish Persian rugs, Carlin’s distinctive over-the-shoulder dresses still stand out. You had me at the basil, rosemary and sage in the bathtub planters at the entrance… and it just continued to get better as I entered the front door! The thing that hit me next was how the space of True Food is so open, relaxed and buzzing with a clean and exciting ambiance. It’s so green and clean and you can smell the cucumber, grapefruit and fresh vegetable and fruit juices being squeezed and served. This place has everything going on at once. The bar, as you walk in, is crowded with health minded and culinary foodies like me that crave the “garden and fruit tree to the table experience”. They expect their juice and fresh squeezed cocktails to be plucked from the tree or scooped from the garden, juiced and ready to drink within minutes! No concentrate or reconstituted juice is EVER seen here! Thank you God! Ok…ok, we need to get past the bar for heaven sakes - I need to taste that Cucumber Martini I have been hearing about. We were seated and within seconds I had that beauty sitting right in front of me. Fresh squeezed cucumber, pineapple, a splash of St. Germain (a German Elderflower Liquor) and vodka and I was in mixology nirvana! Seriously that cocktail alone was one of the best fusions I have ever had…and I have had quite a few - but we’re not counting here are we? This cucumber martini could be a match up to those sweet rosemary lemon drops I made at my mother’s house over the holidays! My husband Bryan didn’t have a chance to even pick up his menu before I had that cocktail in my hand. Sorry, you just need to know how to move around in these parts. Ok… ok back to the menu… Bryan did get to order his fresh juice concoction. He chose the Bright Eyes (one of the most popular) made with pear, ginger, beet, pineapple and turmeric. And tried the Chicken Sausage Pizza with tomato, fennel and creamy fontina cheese. My daughter Alexa had the Weekend Warrior (sounds like her) with apple juice, almond butter, flax, and low fat yogurt. She and I split the caramelized onion tart with smoked garlic, black fig and gorgonzola. Ok, so we couldn’t help it and had to order the edamame dumplings served with daikon radish and white truffle oil and the shitake and tofu lettuce cups for the table perfumed with fresh ginger and soy and the cashews for some crunch. Oh and by the way all the food and drinks are categorized as gluten free (gf) vegetarian (veg) or vegan (v) for ease of ordering and to fit every dietary palate. So it was easy for my brother Charles, who is known as the Angry Vegan, to order. He started with the Root & Remedy: beet, carrot, ginger, turmeric and lemonade. His food choice was one I had guessed he would love - and he did. He ordered Andy’s favorite “TLT”: tempeh, lettuce, tomato, avocado, veganaise and whole grain bread. He said it was delicious (and he is hard to please). The smoky taste of the tempeh with the creaminess of the avocado and crunchiness of the crisp lettuce, and the juicy tomato made it incomparably delicious! I had my usual favorite, Mediterranean chopped salad: kale, cucumber, olive, feta, red quinoa, baby cherry tomatoes, sprouted almonds served with lemon oregano vinaigrette... Ok I’ll have to confess, I don’t always play by the rules so I ordered my salad and the creamy horseradish vinaigrette on the side. It has to be one of the best dressings I’ve had outside of my own culinary lab!! I know, I know, you have been holding your breath for your favorite part of any meal… the dessert - right? Well, I thought it weird but when I asked for the dessert menu Danielle said they don’t serve dessert. What?? And she said, “Just kidding!!” Oh my, the look on everyone’s faces was priceless! So there is definitely entertainment (a must for this crowd!) ha-ha! So drum roll and… dessert is on its way!! I can’t really help myself - I’m sure I speak for the majority of you foodies out there...I went straight for the chocolate: Flourless chocolate with 72% cocoa, (meaning its real chocolate no fillers!).Vanilla ice cream made in house, almond butter and luscious caramel! I am NOT sharing! Let’s be honest here, we just went down the list and ordered one of everything. So here’s the line-up and I’ll tell you my favorites and recommendations. Super berry tart with sea buckthorn, coconut whipped cream and pomegranate, Chia seed pudding with banana and coconut, Pear date cake with walnut crumble, frozen Greek yogurt, Lemon ginger low-fat frozen yogurt, ice cream & sorbet dairy-free vegan and seasonal flavors available. The flavors were Vanilla salted caramel and Chai chocolate with fresh pomegranate seed sprinkle. Yes of course I hate to sound so “expected” but yes, the chocolate cake and the fresh sorbet were my favorites and I recommend them to anyone with a developed or underdeveloped sweet tooth! That’s it for now! Ciao!! Cinzia

Networking Group of Distinction

The faces were familiar, they would run into each other early in the morning, working out at their favorite gym. There was a nod or a smile as they wiped their brows after a particularly grueling spin class. Sometimes a few words would be exchanged, but they all seemed in a rush trying to get their workout in before they would slip into the locker room, and come out transformed into one of the busy business women we all pass by on the streets of San Diego, or sit adjacent to in our cars at the merge. After weeks of the same routine, one of these women decided that perhaps she had more in common than attending the same gym or wearing the same style pumps. Melissa Cizauskas, a top real estate agent with Keller Williams, decided to open up a dialog with some of her gym mates and before very long realized that they had more in common than just a desire to stay fit. Melissa was surprised to find out that a large majority of the members were entrepreneurs and realized how much these women could accomplish if they banded together to learn from one another. This inspirational group is known as Women Entrepreneurs Networking Group, which is clearly descriptive of the membership Many of their members have appeared in both local and national

television programs, have been featured on radio shows and in local and national publications. Women Entrepreneurs Networking Group, or WEG (as they have come to be known) have grown into a sisterhood like affiliation of kindred spirits committed to promoting, inspiring and broadening each other's horizons in their respective businesses throughout the community. This group not only helps share ideas and strategies to assist each other in business enhancement and growth, but their charitable and philanthropic bend results in numerous future plans for helping the community.
