COSTA MESA PARKS AND COMMUNITY SERVICES

HAS SPRUNG! It is a great time to visit one of Costa Mesa’s specialty recreation facilities. In addition to Costa Mesa’s 29 parks, 27 field locations, and two major sports complexes, residents also have access to various special use facilities, including a skate park, a bark park, a golf course, and a tennis center. Costa Mesa residents are fortunate to have these facilities available for their use, and each year the attendance at these amenities continues to grow! Built in 2005, the Costa Mesa Skate Park is open to skate boarders and inline skaters of all ages daily, closed on Tuesdays from 9 am – 3 pm for maintenance. The 15,000 square foot Skate Park is free to the public, although all participants are required to wear their own helmet and pads, and shares a parking lot with the Costa Mesa Bark Park. The Costa Mesa Bark Park is located at 970 Arlington Drive and is open Thursday through Tuesday, closed on Wednesdays for maintenance. The small dog park has recently been expanded. The City is currently piloting an artificial turf option to enhance the experience within the small bark park. If it is well received, more areas may be installed in the future. Resident feedback is welcome through the website or by emailing the Parks and Community Services Department. We hope to see positive feedback and K-9 satisfaction! Like our Facebook page and visit the Recreation Counter in City Hall to get your own Bark Park car decal. Costa Mesa Country Club features two 18 hole championship golf courses, a lighted driving range with PGA golf instruction available, coffee shop and lounge, plus two upstairs banquet rooms handling events from 20 to 500 people. The golf courses, Los Lagos (par 72) and Mesa Linda (par 70), are known for their fantastic playing conditions and fast greens. The practice facility has one of the few lighted grass hitting areas in Orange County, multiple targets in the landing area, two practice putting greens, and a chipping area. The coffee shop and lounge offer great food and bar specials, patio seating and multiple big screen TV’s. It’s a great place to come even when you’re not golfing. The upstairs banquet rooms are spacious with panoramic views of the golf course. The upstairs kitchen and rooms are able to handle events up to 500 people. It is a perfect setting for weddings or any other group events. All facility information is on the website www.costamesacountryclub.com including tee time booking. The City also makes use of The Costa Mesa Tennis Center, a 12 court lighted public tennis facility operated by HMLTennis, LLC. All staff are USPTA certified and classes are available as early as age four all the way through adult. Summer camps, private/group lessons, and league tournaments are offered as well. With so many wonderful and diverse programs and facilities in Costa Mesa, there’s sure to be something for everyone! Kim Pederson, Chairman “The Parks and Community Services Department is committed to enhancing the community through the delivery of innovative recreational programs, quality parks and facilities and services that promote social, physical and emotional well-being. “

Skaters are required to wear a helmet and full pads (knee and elbow). This 15,000-square-foot skate park features street elements, a kidney-shaped pool, and a bowl.

An Orange County park open year round, the Talbert Nature Preserve has nearly 2,000 acres of scenic landscape, perfect for Costa Mesa locals and visitors that want to get outside. A great spot for hiking, biking, jogging or even just walking the dog (yes, the preserve is dog friendly!), the preserve acts as a botanical garden, wildlife refuge and exceptional recreational facility all at once. Picnic tables at the end of the base of a trail from Fairview Park is where you’ll likely find Costa Mesa locals spending time on the weekends.

BMX bikes and scooters are prohibited.

Highlights:

 The many lakes, waterfalls, and waterfowl provide for leisurely strolls and adventures for the kids

 Completely “barrier-free” universally accessible and ADA compliant  Kids of all ages and abilities drawn to the moving sled/ car/boat (whatever their imagination divines it to be)

Costa Mesa | 7 a.m. – Sunset

Talbert Nature Preserve is located on Victoria Street in Costa Mesa between Pacific Avenue and the Santa Ana River. The Talbert Nature Preserve is divided into two sections; the North Talbert Preserve is roughly 91.5 acres and the South Talbert Preserve is approximately 88.5 acres.

 It’s amazingly well-maintained in a peaceful setting across from the Costa Mesa Tennis Center

 Motor skills challenges set this park apart from others – there are pedestals to navigate, balance beams, platforms, standing pedal pushers, and tunnels

With nine different trails stretching over nearly 3 miles (6 miles round trip); the Talbert Nature Preserve is one of few open space areas left in Central Orange County. With only 100 feet in elevation, the Talbert’s trails are great for beginner hikers or families with younger children. Hikers can continue through the Nature Center to reach the Santa Ana River Bicycle Trail, which continues on to the Pacific Ocean and nearby Newport Beach. Wildlife in the preserve consists mostly of birds, including great, snowy egrets and mallard ducks. You might also see small animals like squirrels and rabbits – and beware of coyote visits at night.
