The Orange County Register recently published its annual list of the 75 Best Places to Eat in Orange County by food critic Brad A. Johnson and the top four restaurants are Costa Mesa eateries. Topping the list at No. 1 for the second straight year is Taco Maria. Vaca is No. 2 followed by Hana re Sushi and Arc at Nos. 3 and 4. The list includes 10 more Costa Mesa restaurants, including Mastro's Steakhouse, Restaurant Marin, The Capital Grille, Shunka Sushi, Water Grill, Din Tai Fung, Manpuku Tokyo BBQ, Filomena's Italian Kitchen and Rance's Chicago Pizza. Congrats to the 14 local restaurants that made this year’s list and we know that those are just some of the many great places to eat in Costa Mesa.

DOG LICENSE APPLICATION Why should I license my pet? The Law It is the law! Both the State of California and the City of Costa Mesa require residents to license their pets.

Your Pets Ticket Home

DOG LICENSE APPLICATION

Pets that are licensed have a better chance of being returned to their owners.

Animal Safety and Wellbeing Licenses help enforce rabies vaccines and encourage the spaying and neutering of pets, which greatly benefits your pet and the community.

Be a Responsible Pet Owner Here are some reasons why you should adopt your next pet. TO SAVE A LIFE! Not just one, but two lives. When you adopt you save the life of the pet you take home and help make room for another one to be cared for. IT’S A GREAT DEAL! Most adoption fees already include the costs of microchipping, spaying/neutering and up-to-date vaccines. VARIETY! Animal shelters have a wide variety of pets to choose from, more than 25 percent of which are purebred. If you have a particular breed in mind, check both your local shelter and breed specific rescue groups. SUPPORT ADOPTION! Adopting stops the exploitation of animals. If you do decide to purchase a pet, make sure you find a reputable breeder. The breeder should allow you to meet both parents of your soon to be pet, and be able to provide you with the animal's complete health history. IT’S GOOD FOR THE ENVIRONMENT! Adopting helps combat overpopulation. Over 80 percent of animals in shelters are there because of owner neglect. Adopting is ecofriendly and recycled pets are the best kind!

An Orange County park open year round, the Talbert Nature Preserve has nearly 2,000 acres of scenic landscape, perfect for Costa Mesa locals and visitors that want to get outside. A great spot for hiking, biking, jogging or even just walking the dog (yes, the preserve is dog friendly!), the preserve acts as a botanical garden, wildlife refuge and exceptional recreational facility all at once. Picnic tables at the end of the base of a trail from Fairview Park is where you’ll likely find Costa Mesa locals spending time on the weekends.

BMX bikes and scooters are prohibited.

With nine different trails stretching over nearly 3 miles (6 miles round trip); the Talbert Nature Preserve is one of few open space areas left in Central Orange County. With only 100 feet in elevation, the Talbert’s trails are great for beginner hikers or families with younger children. Hikers can continue through the Nature Center to reach the Santa Ana River Bicycle Trail, which continues on to the Pacific Ocean and nearby Newport Beach. Wildlife in the preserve consists mostly of birds, including great, snowy egrets and mallard ducks. You might also see small animals like squirrels and rabbits – and beware of coyote visits at night.

THE OCEAN BEGINS AT YOUR FRONT DOOR THE POLLUTION SOLUTION

Dirt and Sediment Pollution: Dirt and sediment can impede the flow of stormwater and negatively impact habitat as it travels through waterways and deposits downstream. Pollutants can attach to sediment, which transports to waterways. Solution: Protect dirt stockpiles by covering them with tarps or secure plastic sheets to prevent transport by wind or rain. Metals Pollution: Metals and other toxins present in car wash water can harm important plankton, which forms the base of the aquatic food chain. Solution: Take your car to a commercial car wash where the wash water is captured and treated. Pet Waste Pollution: Pet waste carries bacteria through our watersheds is eventually washed into the ocean. This poses a health risk to swimmers and surfers. Solution: Pick up after your pets!

Trash and Debris Pollution: Trash and debris enters waterways by wind, littering and careless maintenance of trash receptacles. Trash on roadways also enters the storm drain system and flows into the ocean. Solution: Don’t litter and ensure trash containers are covered. Litter prevention is much more efficient than attempting to treat trash in stormwater discharges. Come to one of Orange County’s many locations for Coastal and Inner-Coastal Cleanup Day, held in September. Motor Oil/Vehicle Fluids Pollution: Oil and petroleum products from our vehicles are toxic to people, wildlife and plants. Solution: Fix any leaks and keep the maintenance up on your car. Use absorbent material such as cat litter on oil spills, then sweep it up and dispose of it in the trash. Recycle used motor oil at a local Household Hazardous Waste Collection Center. To report a spill, call the Orange County 24-hour Water Pollution Problem Reporting Hotline at 1.877.89.SPILL. For more info, visit costamesaca.gov/waterquality

JUNE

FRIDAY

Pesticides and Fertilizer Pollution: Pesticides that are designed to be toxic to pests can be equally lethal to marine life. Solution: Never use pesticides or fertilizer within 48 hours of an anticipated rain event. Use only as much as is directed on the label and keep it off driveways and sidewalks.
