COSTA MESA PARKS AND COMMUNITY SERVICES
play.a.bil.i.ty
noun The extent to which a city makes it easy for all kids to get balanced and active play. It is with excitement that I announce Costa Mesa has been selected for the second year in a row as a Playful City USA®! This reaffirms our commitment to recreation and keeping our city healthy. With over 20 parks to choose from, we strive to keep playfulness within reach. Costa Mesa plays host to a handful of special events such as the Scarecrow & Pumpkin Festival, ArtVenture, and Snoopy House, as well as offering everything from Fairyland Ballet dance classes to Lego© Engineering, so whatever your passion is, Costa Mesa has it! As we head into the Fall season, we will be kicking off our Back-to-School sessions, which include our ‘Recreation On Campus for Kids’ (ROCKS), our ‘Learn, Explore, And Play’ (LEAP), and our ‘Recreation Leaders In Training’ (RLIT) programs. ROCKs and RLIT both take place at eleven area elementary schools, while LEAP is housed in our Balearic Community Center. The Teen Program will host their first event of the Fall season on September 23rd by throwing a pool party at the Downtown Aquatic Center! The momentum will continue with a “Monster Smash Dodgeball” tournament in October and “A Teen Grinchmas” movie night in December! The Costa Mesa Senior Center will feature various programs and activities to keep our 50+ participants active and healthy. The center is featuring a new Square Dancing class in September, just in time to practice for the Wild Western Hoe Down event. Visit in October to enjoy a free movie screening and physician led discussion of Being Mortal. I’ll see you at the park! Brett Eckles, Chairman “The Parks and Community Services Department is committed to enhancing the community through the delivery of innovative recreational programs, quality parks and facilities and services that promote social, physical and emotional well-being. “

The Talbert Nature Preserve is divided into two sections; the North Talbert Preserve is roughly 91.5 acres and the South Talbert Preserve is approximately 88.5 acres. With nine different trails stretching over nearly 3 miles (6 miles round trip); the Talbert Nature Preserve is one of few open space areas left in Central Orange County. With only 100 feet in elevation, the Talbert’s trails are great for beginner hikers or families with younger children. Hikers can continue through the Nature Center to reach the Santa Ana River Bicycle Trail, which continues on to the Pacific Ocean and nearby Newport Beach. Wildlife in the preserve consists mostly of birds, including great, snowy egrets and mallard ducks. You might also see small animals like squirrels and rabbits – and beware of coyote visits at night.
